In this episode, I answer a great question from listener (and She Runs Ultras member) Kierstin: How do you train mental toughness and resiliency when the moments you need it don’t show up until 12+ hours into a race? And how do you practice that in everyday life without recreating 20 hours of race fatigue? Here’s the truth: you’re practicing mental toughness 24/7 , whether you realize it or not. It doesn’t start with huge, heroic efforts. It starts with the small, uncomfortable, inconvenient stuff you’d rather avoid. Inside the episode, we cover: Why mental toughness is built the same way strength training is — light weight first, then load. How “small annoyances” are actually prime training reps for mental resilience. Why skipping straight to the big challenges leaves you vulnerable to the small ones that derail races. Real examples of micro-challenges you can start using today: stretching after a run, running the hill you hate, waking up early, joining the back of the pack, choosing the rocky trail, etc. How to make a simple “uncomfortable list” and use it as a training progression from small → big. The real battle: the mental chatter that shows up before you even start the task. Why your self-talk before, during, and after these moments matters just as much as the action itself. A reminder that on race day, curveballs will happen — and these daily reps are what prepare you to meet them instead of fold. What happens when you finish a 50K…but the official results say otherwise? That’s exactly what happened to me back in May when I ran the Bloodroot 50K. I crossed the finish line. I’ve got the pictures & the Garmin data to prove it. But a couple weeks later, a former client emailed me to say: “Not sure if you know this, but UltrasignUp has you listed as a DNF.” Cue five months of back-and-forth with Spartan (the race organizer), unanswered emails, dead ends, and more marketing emails in my inbox than I can count. And here’s the thing: this isn’t about me being salty that my UltrasignUp ranking shows a DNF. I’ve DNF’d before - no shame there. What frustrates me is what this says about how some race organizations are treating runners. Because if this had been your first 50K? If you put your heart, soul, and Saturday mornings into training…showed up nervous but ready…crossed that finish line…and then found out you were listed as a DNF? That would sting. Bad. In this episode, I’m breaking down: The messy reality of my Bloodroot 50K results saga Why I think some race organizations have lost sight of their runners What this experience taught me as a coach (and former RD) Why you deserve credit for your work—especially if it’s your first ultra I’ll keep you posted on whether Spartan ever corrects this mistake. We’ve all been there… You take one day off from training. Then one day turns into two. Two turns into seven. And before you know it, weeks have gone by and your race is right around the corner. Cue the “oh shit” moment. If your race is only 6–8 weeks away and your training has completely fallen apart, what do you do? Do you just throw in the towel? Or is there a way to right the ship and get yourself back on track? I've run this race 3 times now and even though the course never changes, it's always a challenge! The Ragged 75 Stage Race is three consecutive days of running around in the woods of New Hampshire and I would highly recommend it. One of my fatal flaws is that when I'm considering a race, I tend to evaluate whether other not I can do it based on my fitness right then in that moment. I think: "Could I do this race right now?" 99% of the time, the answer is NO (obviously!) because I'm usually picking races when it's my off season or when I'm taking a break so while I might be fit, I'm certainly not race ready! I'm asking myself the wrong question when trying to decide if I should do a race or not. So today I want to share some better questions that you can use to help keep you from following suit and adopting my fatal flaw! Here they are: Do I have enough lead time (to train)? Does it challenge me in a new, different, or exciting way? Is it a stretch or a strain? What aspect of my training will I need to focus on in order to feel more confident in my ability to complete this race? Allison from the Run Your First 50k Facebook group posted this a couple weeks ago: " Anyone else feeling lost without a training plan? As some of you might remember, I ran my first 50K at the end of April. And then I did a trail Ragnar and another race or two that didn’t necessarily require specific training. Back when I was training for road marathons, I used to come home at the end of my long weekend runs, collapse on my couch, and sleep for hours. Physically exhausted, my body would ache all over for days, and I was convinced that there was no way I would make it the full 26.2 on race day.
