What if the loudest voice at your meals isn’t hunger, but an overactive alarm telling you you’re doing it “wrong”? In this episode, I dig into the link between food guilt and relentless food noise, and show how midlife shifts, hormones, sleep, mood, and capacity can crank that alarm even higher. Instead of doubling down on rules, I'll walk you through the 3-step process that replaces food morality with neutrality. Sometimes the routines that feel the hardest to change are the ones that once helped us cope. In this episode, therapist and eating-disorder specialist Signe Darpinian breaks down how those patterns get wired into the brain, why diet culture reinforces them, and how midlife is actually an ideal time to reshape habits with clarity and compassion. We dig into what it really takes to unwind the patterns that feel automatic, especially the ones that show up at the end of a long day or week. You’ll hear how small, well-timed shifts can loosen the grip of old routines and create space for choices that actually feel good. We also explore simple tools for calming the mental swirl that fuels cravings and second-guessing, along with a gentler approach to movement and nourishment that supports energy, mood, and a steadier sense of self. It’s all about building habits that fit your real life, not forcing yourself into rigid rules. If you’re stepping away from dieting and looking for routines that feel kinder, more sustainable, and more you , this conversation offers encouragement, clarity, and a practical path forward. What if the fear of “looking older” isn’t really about wrinkles at all, but about relevance, visibility, and power? I welcome registered dietitian and author Deb Benfield to dig into internalized ageism and the subtle ways culture teaches us to distrust our future selves. We walk about how it gets tangled up with diet culture, wellness trends, and perfectionism. Together we unpack why compliments like “you haven’t aged a bit” keep youth on a pedestal, how patriarchy and ableism shape appearance pressure, and what it takes to build a truly age-affirming life. We talk about: Defining internalized ageism and why it starts early Separating facts of aging from fear-based stories Naming patriarchy, sexism and ableism in appearance pressure How wellness trends can trigger relapse and obsession Autonomy vs pressure in skincare, movement and food Her book's framework for untangling systems and mending body trust Practical steps to notice, name and unlearn ageist thoughts Choosing freedom and values over perfection Learn more about Deb's work :https://www.debrabenfield.com Order Unapologetic Aging : https://www.debrabenfield.com/book If you've loved today's conversation and found it helpful, please share it with a friend who needs to hear this and leave a review wherever you listen to podcasts If you're ready to take the next step towards thriving in midlife, head to menopause nutritionist.ca to learn more about my one-to-one and group coaching programs, free resources, and where to get your copy of Eat to Thrive during menopause What did you think of this episode? We all want to simplify nutrition (and life!) but are we going down the wrong path when it comes to finding "one thing" for nutrition in menopause? Laura Clark RD and I talk about how real progress in midlife comes from flexibility, self-trust, and simple, satisfying meals. We break down the hype around protein, fiber, and even the microbiome so food feels calmer, kinder, and more doable. In this episode you'll hear: • why chasing a single fix creates stress not change • how Laura’s practice shifted from weight-centric targets to nuance • protein without perfection and what steadies your morning • fiber and microbiome benefits without counting or 30-plant pressure • simple plate-building: protein, carbs you enjoy, and some crunch • escaping on-it off-it thinking and perfectionism loops • social comparison traps and giving yourself permission • redefining progress as small choices that stack • adding fun back into food and midlife If you're ready to take the next step towards thriving in midlife, head to www.menopausenutritionist.ca to learn more about my one-to-one and group coaching programs, free resources, and where to get your copy of Eat to Thrive during menopause. If your closet feels like a battlefield and getting dressed has turned into a daily reminder that your body isn’t the same as it used to be, you’re not alone. In this episode, I’m joined by personal stylist Jacquelyn Prattipati, who helps women in midlife rediscover confidence and comfort through clothes that fit the body (and the life) they have now. We’re talking about what “feeling put together” really means, why style has nothing to do with size, and how to stop waiting for a smaller body to wear what you love. You’ll walk away with practical tips for finding clothes that fit today’s body, letting go of the “someday jeans,” and remembering that your body isn’t the problem, your clothes just need to catch up. Menopause can scramble your mood, planning, memory, and appetite cues, especially if you’re living with ADHD. My guest this week is Diana Reid, RD and we dive into how shifting estrogen affects dopamine in the brain and why that can make meal planning feel impossible, grocery stores overwhelming, and evenings vulnerable to emotional hunger and snacking. Together, we map the hidden steps that turn “what’s for dinner?” into a 30-step project and show how to lower the cognitive load and decision fatigue. Think forecasts instead of rigid schedules, two to three-day meal windows, and a “nutrition capsule wardrobe” you can refresh monthly for novelty. We also get real about dopamine seeking, emotional hunger, and the link between ADHD and binge patterns. The antidote isn’t restriction, it’s regulation and pleasure. Learn how to prevent primal hunger with predictable protein and fiber, add texture and heat for sensory satisfaction, and plan pleasure on purpose! If this conversation helps you feel seen, subscribe, share it with a friend, and leave a review so more midlife listeners can find food freedom and confidence. Midlife brain fog and overwhelm aren’t signs of falling apart. It’s really just your biology getting louder. Dr. Jen Wolkin, a Harvard-trained neuropsychologist, explains how perimenopause can reveal ADHD that’s been there all along and why compassion, not willpower, brings clarity. We unpack how estrogen shifts dopamine and norepinephrine, why hormone swings magnify time blindness and emotional reactivity, and how perfectionism and people-pleasing crumble under midlife’s mental load. You’ll walk away with simple tools for clearer focus and steadier mood, including protein-forward meals, grazing stations to beat decision fatigue, and scripts for asking for help. The words “diet and exercise” often feel like a trap door into diet culture and the diet mentality. Given that the theme for this year's World Menopause Day is lifestyle medicine, I wanted to explore lifestyle medicine through a behavior-first lens and share compassionate, doable choices that actually fit your life. Starting with real stories—a cholesterol scare that triggered a Google spiral and a breast cancer survivor who felt she “failed” exercise—we'll explore why language carries weight and how reframing goals can lift the pressure without losing the science. I reframe lifestyle medicine as behavior change medicine and share practical ways to support menopause with flexible food patterns, mindful eating for satisfaction, and low-capacity day forecasting. We'll cover: • Why words matter • Behavior change vs chasing an outcome • Redefining healthy eating • A plant-forward and fiber focused approach • Persistence vs consistency as a food strategy • Mindful eating to boost satisfaction and awareness • Forecasting meals to reduce decision fatigue • Capsule menus and targeting tough meal times • Personalization over perfection in menopause care • Community resources and ongoing support Head to menopause nutritionist.ca to learn more about my one-to-one and group coaching programs, free resources, and where to get your copy of Eat to Thrive during menopause. Isn’t it wild that you can do everything “right”-be the devoted mom, caregiver, spouse, or friend, and yet still feel like you’ve lost touch with the “real” you? That’s where our conversation with writer, speaker, and coach Jen Butler begins. It’s a candid look at how midlife cracks open our default scripts around food, alcohol, and identity, and how choosing peace can be much more fulfilling than trying to take up less space in the world. Jen shares her early entry into diet culture, the moment a nutritionist prescribed restriction that stole her period and presence, and the turning point when she stopped paying for being smaller with health and joy. We also talk about alcohol as a coping mechanism, how honesty sparked change, and why removing the fog made room for deeper work: food freedom, identity beyond motherhood, and creative ambition. Now, as a coach and author of Mom Rediscovered , Jen invites women to reclaim their space and redefine midlife on their own terms. If you’re ready to trade perfection for presence and roles for a richer identity, this conversation will resonate. Feeling lost in a sea of conflicting advice about autoimmune disease? It can be especially tricky during perimenopause and menopause when hormones throw everything off. Dr. Alison Danby, a naturopathic doctor who specializes in autoimmune health, is here to break it all down with clear, science-backed guidance that feels like a sigh of relief. What you won’t hear is any ideas about cutting out gluten, dairy, or sugar, or following strict AIP protocols. Dr. Danby explains why those extreme diets can actually hurt your gut and why a Mediterranean-style approach supports your microbiome, heart, bones, and overall wellbeing, without the stress. We also chat about the surprising role of stress in triggering autoimmune flares and how simple things like better sleep, gentle movement, and stress management can be more powerful than complicated food rules. This week’s episode is extra special for TWO reasons! For one, we are kicking off Season 6, and my sister Friedel is interviewing me! We’re diving into my new book, Eat to Thrive During Menopause , and why I felt called to write it after my own surprising start to perimenopause at 37. Instead of talking about what to cut out, I share why I focus on what to add, such as fiber, phytoestrogens, and carbs that actually satisfy. We also bust some common menopause myths and talk about how intuitive eating can help you feel at peace with food in this season of life. Friedel shares some of her favourite recipes from the book (pumpkin flax muffins, anyone?) along with some of her behind-the-scenes memories of me while I was writing it! What if menopause wasn’t something to endure, but something to embrace? After asking my Instagram community about the unexpected gifts of midlife, their answers revealed just how liberating this season can be. From deeper friendships and renewed creativity to freedom from dieting and people-pleasing, their stories echoed a powerful shift, and one rooted in self-awareness, strength, and permission to live more authentically. These insights inspired my new book, Eat to Thrive During Menopause , which blends intuitive eating with symptom-supportive nutrition. No tracking, no rules, just nourishment. Even though this is the Season 5 finale, this episode invites you to see menopause not as an ending, but as a new beginning. Like what you learned? We unpack how midlife hormonal shifts can amplify ADHD traits and why rigid fitness plans rarely work for neurodivergent brains. As a movement coach, Christine offers a refreshing approach to movement in trading consistency for persistence, flexibility, and self-compassion. We also bust the motivation myth and share simple mindset shifts that make movement feel doable, even on low-energy days. If traditional routines haven’t worked for you, Christine’s approach might be the reset you’ve been looking for. Our bodies change in midlife and menopause, and many times in ways that feel confusing or frustrating. But what if those changes aren’t a problem to fix, but an invitation to reconnect with ourselves? In this conversation, Dr. Charlotte Ord, psychologist and body image expert shares a refreshing take on body appreciation. It’s not about pretending to love every wrinkle or roll. It’s about noticing what your body does for you, and learning to meet it with care, not criticism. We also explore a powerful question: Who benefits when we hate our bodies? The answer reveals just how deeply diet culture and the wellness industry profit from our insecurities. Dr. Ord offers simple, grounding practices to help you feel more at home in your body, including media literacy tips and ways to gently shift your focus toward gratitude and self-trust. Standing in your closet thinking, "Nothing fits anymore?" It’s not the best feeling, but can I let you in on something? You don’t have to hold onto your “lose weight wardrobe”. In this encouraging conversation, stylist Dacy Gillespie helps us reframe how we think about style in midlife, especially when our bodies, styles, and preferences have changed. Together, we explore why comfort isn’t “giving up,” how style can help you reconnect with who you are now, and why that “lose weight wardrobe” may be doing more harm than good. You’ll also get a big dose of validation: most clothes aren’t made to fit you—and that’s a design flaw, not a personal one. If getting dressed has felt frustrating or disconnected lately, this episode offers a refreshing new lens: style as self-care, self-expression, and an invitation to show up for yourself just as you are today. In this episode, I get to bring you a very special guest, someone whose work has transformed my whole practice, and who has been helping people heal their relationship with food and their bodies through intuitive eating for three decades! In this conversation, Intuitive Eating co-founder Evelyn Tribole shares why this compassionate, research-backed framework is more relevant than ever—especially during menopause. We explore how symptoms like sleep disruption can throw off hunger cues, why decades of dieting create a fear of "losing control," and how that fear is actually your body trying to protect you. Evelyn breaks down the biology behind these patterns and offers a deeply freeing perspective for anyone tired of blaming themselves. You'll also hear why intuitive eating works even with midlife health conditions, and how shifting from restriction to "nutrition by addition" can make food feel joyful again. Most of all, this episode is an invitation to stop fighting your body—and start finding what truly lights you up. Feeling hungry all the time? Or do you feel like fullness just doesn’t land the way it used to? You’re not imagining things—and it’s not about discipline either. Hormonal changes in menopause can change how you experience hunger, and that can be disorienting. In this episode, we answer a listener’s honest question about feeling constantly hungry, and explore how biology, behavior, and hormones all intersect. We break down the three types of hunger—physical, emotional, and taste—and why food noise can feel especially loud right now. You’ll hear how estrogen impacts fullness signals, how sleep and brain energy play a role, and most importantly, how to work with your changing body, not against it. We share ways to build satisfying meals, spot emotional hunger with compassion, and reconnect with your body's wisdom. This one’s for anyone in or around menopause who’s ready to stop fighting hunger—and start listening to it. She makes mindfulness accessible for everyone, even those who feel too busy or think it’s not for them. Diana shares practical tips for beginners, like starting with just five minutes a day using free apps like UCLA Mindful, or the Happier app, which has just released a new mindful guide to menopause. After years of dieting, the advice to "eat when you’re hungry, stop when you’re full" can feel frustrating and oversimplified-especially if you’ve been trying to “get” intuitive eating This week, fellow intuitive eating dietitian Julie Duffy Dillon joins me to help us understand some of the common roadblocks that keep us “stuck" and why reconnecting with your body’s natural cues takes patience. Most importantly, that healing is possible at any age, size, or health condition. We explore why dieting’s pull is so strong and why there’s so much value in naming why diets have given you a spark of feeling hopeful or empowered. With intuitive eating, weight gain can feel like failure, but Julie reminds us it's normal for our bodies to change — and why accepting this is key to healing and feeling like you’re making progress. Julie also shares insights from her new book, Find Your Food Voice, and encourages us to let go of diet culture so we can focus on healing from the trauma it’s caused. I'm celebrating a huge personal milestone—10 years of embracing intuitive eating and un-dieting—and I’d love for you to join me as I look back on my journey. In this episode, I’m sharing what it’s really been like to navigate the ups and downs of perimenopause while also unlearning the harmful messages of diet culture. I'll explain why intuitive eating is more than just another set of rules. It’s a mindset shift that can free you from the exhausting cycle of diets and body shame (but one that takes practice and lots of self-compassion!) I’ll also share what I’ve learned about body neutrality—what it means to feel good in your body without the pressure to love every part of it, and why the messy middle of intuitive eating (the “screw it” phase) can actually be a valuable part of healing. Whether you're just starting to rethink your relationship with food or feel stuck in the messy middle, I hope my story offers encouragement and solidarity. Get ready to rethink what you know about binge eating and food addiction in this eye-opening conversation with health coach, occupational therapist, body image, and binge eating coach, Stefanie Michele. With her decades-long journey with binge eating, Stefanie shares insights to help break the stigma around it. Can you imagine a world where food choices are driven by joy, not fear? Today I’m joined by non-diet, weight-inclusive dietitian Abbie Attwood to explore the three most common roadblocks to intuitive eating. We dive into the "messy middle," that tricky space where you’ve left behind diet culture but haven’t yet found your sweet spot with your eating habits. These common hiccups include: ➡️ the impact of fear-based nutrition messaging ➡️ the discomfort of navigating a world without food rules and ➡️ managing feedback from those who don’t understand your decision to step away from dieting Perhaps most importantly, we highlight the critical role of self-compassion in moving past these roadblocks. Whether you’re struggling with emotional triggers around food or looking for simple ways to make food decisions, this episode will help you move closer to food freedom and body acceptance. Is it just me, or is the “fight menopause” messaging starting to feel a bit stale? Yes, midlife 100% comes with its challenges (many of which we’ll tackle together in Season 5 with the help of some fantastic experts and guests). But to kick off this season, I wanted to share three reasons why I think life post-menopause is pretty awesome. My favorite being that midlife is this incredible opportunity to transform your relationship with food and your body. I’ll share how we can learn to work with our bodies rather than fighting them. Welcome to this week's episode of the Midlife Feast, our season four finale! 🎉 For this special episode, I invited my sister, Friedel to join me. We didn't grow up together, (those details are in the episode) but by luck, we both ended up living in the same city in the Netherlands and I couldn’t be more grateful to be sharing this season of life with her! We dive into our shared experiences and differences, especially around menopause. While I went through early menopause, my sister, at 46, is just starting perimenopause. Her journey this past year reflects what many go through, wondering, "Is this perimenopause, or am I going crazy?" Join us as we chat about the five key things she's learned and wished she had known. We laughed a lot during this episode and think you will too. See you in September 2024 for Season 5 of the podcast! Building and maintaining new movement habits can feel daunting, especially if you don’t enjoy moving as much as you did in the past, or are learning to navigate changes to your physical abilities in midlife. But as my guest and I both agree, fitness culture has way overcomplicated what counts as success when it comes to fitness goals. In this episode, personal trainer and nutrition coach, Michael Ulloa joins me to share his inclusive (and refreshing) perspective on fitness. We peel back the layers of industry myths, especially those that relate to us in midlife and menopause, and reveal just how achievable and personal fitness can be. We have a great chat about the overwhelming mess of health and fitness messaging. If you’re ready to normalize making intuitive and informed decisions that prioritize body autonomy, join us! We’ll also discover what Michael type of movement packs the biggest punch for your mind and body, even if you only have eight minutes a day! If dieting has left you flat-out exhausted mentally, physically, and emotionally, I want to assure you that you are not the problem. The problem is that diets and food rules have called the shots for decades of our lives. New diets mean new rules. More rules mean more confusion. And in midlife, we’re starting to realize that our brains and bodies are tired of trying to do more with less. But why do you keep wanting to try another diet? And why do most healthcare professionals still recommend them? To help us unpack the many layers of the problems with dieting, I’ve invited Dr. Amy Porto to join me. She will help us understand why dieting “success” is so fleeting and why your real superpower lies in giving yourself permission to explore what hunger, satisfaction, and pleasure mean to you. So grab a snack and fuel your mind and your body as you listen to this powerful episode! The body acceptance and un-dieting journey is not for the faint of heart. It’s why so many people tell me they will be ready to work with me after they try this “last diet” one more time. Body image work tends to bring up more questions than answers and it takes a lot of courage to sit in all of the emotions that come with the questions. To help us unpack the many layers of this conversation, I’ve invited nutritionist and body image coach, Steph Dodier to help us understand why our brains naturally associate being thin with being safe, why others feel threatened by people who feel at home in their larger bodies, and how to see your body as a vehicle to experience your life instead of a sign of your worth. Steph will guide us through what it takes to rewire our brains on this topic and why the experience of being rejected can empower us to learn the strength of resilience and trusting ourselves. In my work supporting women in midlife and menopause, there are some regular and recurring themes to the questions I get. Whether it’s a client, someone in the community, or DMs, they typically go like this: “I don’t understand what’s wrong with me.” or “There must be something I’m missing.” I always reassure them by saying, “I can’t tell you how common that is.” Why is it so common? If you’re over 40, you can thank the 1980s for many of the beliefs you have about food, nutrition, and health. Having grown up in the days before the internet, we didn’t have the luxury of choosing what information we consumed. We were all fed the same messages as the pool of mainstream media was much smaller and less diverse. In this episode, I’m going to share three beliefs that diet culture fed you and why they are likely overcomplicating your relationship with food and your body. Then I’ll give you three questions you can ask yourself if you’re ready to start un-dieting these beliefs and find a more peaceful relationship with food and your body. When we begin to heal from all the damage diet culture has had on our growth and development, it can feel very urgent to get it “right” for our kids and learn how to keep diet culture out of our homes. While this deserves to be a top priority, it requires a lot of grace. In this episode, nutritionist and fitness coach, Tracey Harper helps us understand why rewriting the narrative for the next generation demands that we continue healing in our relationships with food and our bodies. She will help us frame up conversations that invite young people to get curious about how they relate to their bodies, as well as how to help kids reflect on the impact that the media has on their mental health. If you worry about the damage that’s already been done, I invite you to join us. This episode will remind you that a growth mindset is key to helping young people embrace body diversity and food neutrality. She shares why her weight-loss “success story” became unsustainable, physically, mentally, and emotionally. As a mother and educator, she recognized the urgent need to redefine beauty standards for impressionable young people and took a powerful stand by transforming her epiphany into a children's book celebrating all body shapes and sizes. Tight pants. Bloating. IBS. Food sensitivities. If you’re one of the many people who have experienced gastrointestinal discomfort in midlife, you know how complex this issue is. Dr. Kim Bretz ND is joining me to answer some of the most frequently asked gut health questions. She will help us understand that there’s a fair amount of confusion about our gut because we’re navigating both physical symptoms and perceptions all at once. We’ll dive into FODMAPs, why digestive diversity is so important, and why self-directed diets not only add discomfort but actually put us at risk if we don’t know when and how to reintroduce foods. We’ll also touch on why trying to self-diagnose gut health problems can be an unexpected path to disordered eating patterns. Diet and wellness culture do a fantastic job “shoulding” all over us, especially when it comes to the habits we put into place. This pressure does not mix well with our already strained capacity in midlife, making it necessary to ask ourselves if the habits we keep are serving us anymore. That’s why I’ve invited health coach and behavior change expert Heather Sayers Lehman to help us dive into this work. Habits can be powerful tools, but they should be a reflection of how attuned we are to our own needs and preferences-not diet culture rules. We’ll unpack why we need to focus less on willpower and more on self-compassion. You’ll be so refreshed by the way Heather helps us approach habit change in a way that actually feels aligned and makes the ROI easy to recognize! In addition to the emotional and physical changes that can come with midlife, have you ever felt discouraged when you realized that your relationship with your spouse or partner was having its own midlife crisis? If so, you’re not alone, but you don’t have to stay stuck. Since we’re celebrating Valentine’s Day this week, I thought it would be the perfect time to invite relationship expert Carrie Cohen on the show to talk about why feeling disconnected in relationships and marriage in midlife can happen without us even noticing. She will let us in on why midlife is another transition for our relationship that will need plenty of communication and negotiation until both partners land in a sweet spot. Best of all, Carrie shares some incredibly practical and powerful tools you can implement in your relationship to get the spark and connection back on the menu again! Today we’re tackling a topic we haven’t yet devoted an entire episode to but certainly deserves one! I’ve invited Nutrition & Body Relationship Coach, Deb Benfield to help us explore the subtle but profound impact of ageism on body image in midlife. We cover so much in this one conversation including aging body liberation, what it means to carry internalized ageism, and how that intersects with disordered eating during midlife. The episode emphasizes the importance of self-compassion, acknowledging losses, and practicing body acceptance. One of the biggest challenges of midlife is the fact that so many of us feel flat-out exhausted, even after 8 hours of sleep! That’s why I invited the Fatigue Fixer, Dr. Sarah Vadeboncoeur, ND to help us understand why this chronic exhaustion is so common but also more complex than just having low iron levels. Sarah will share the four areas you need to explore to discover what's zapping your energy these days. Everyone comes from somewhere. It’s a simple, perhaps obvious statement, but one that is more relevant than we might realize. In this episode, I’m joined by psychologist, speaker, and author, Dr. Jody Carrington. Jody believes that finding the courage and the safe places to tell our stories is what we need most as we navigate a distracted and disconnected world. While I haven’t known Jody for long, we quickly connected over the bathing suit story she shared on her podcast (what she calls the connector of all stories). I hope that by sharing some of these relatable battles with body image, you’ll realize you’re not alone. Jody will also talk about two of the biggest tools for recovery in moments like these: gratitude and agency. You have a story too, and it needs to be told. If the pressure from wellness culture leaves you feeling fearful and anxious because of its unattainable standards, it's probably safe to say that it's not truly promoting well-being. And if you've invested time, money, or energy in the myths and promises of wellness culture, you probably haven't seen much ROI on those either. In this episode, I’m kicking off 2024 with a guest who needs little introduction-Registered Dietitian and author of The Wellness Trap , Christy Harrison. We are taking a deep dive into why clean eating became so trendy (and dangerous), why we are drawn to the fear-based messaging of wellness culture, as well as why it’s so irrelevant to such a large population of the world. If you’ve been craving an approach to food and body image that is more gentle, nuanced and includes priorities like mental health, community, and the understanding of socioeconomic influences on health disparities, you won’t want to miss this episode! You know the overwhelming and even sometimes paralyzing feelings you battle when you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror or a photo? It’s when the image we see in front of us doesn’t match the image in our brain. That’s body grief. In this episode, I’ve invited Registered Dietitian, Amanda Mittman to tackle this subject with me. We’re calling out why body grief has so many layers you might not be aware of, and why it becomes even more complex when the curve balls of perimenopause and aging are added to the mix. While there is a lot to process, you’ll be encouraged to know that you don’t have to stay stuck here either. In this episode, I invite you to listen as I sit down with Midlife Feast Community member, Laura, a veteran dieter who's now embracing life as an intuitive eater. Laura generously shares her 40-year dieting journey, beginning at age 11, and why it’s so easy to buy into the lie that if you’re not seeing results on a diet, well, you simply aren’t trying hard enough. We debunk common myths like equating intuitive eating with “giving up” and explaining how it can truly nourish your soul and heart. Laura opens up about her previous restrictive eating habits, and how she now seeks balanced meals that satisfy more than just the palate. We discuss the liberating feeling of giving yourself permission to enjoy food, and how even dining out and treats can fit into a healthy relationship with food. What did you think of this episode? In this episode, weight-inclusive endocrinologist, Dr. Gregory Dodell joins me as we continue the conversation we’ve started on the podcast (with Val Schonberg and Danielle Bubblitz) about managing diabetes in midlife Dr. Dodell emphasizes that diabetes doesn't discriminate based on body size. He advocates for a personalized, intuitive approach to eating, highlighting the importance of listening to your body. We highlight the fact that diabetes can bring emotional challenges, including stigma around medication and feeling like you've failed if diet and exercise alone don't cut it. So, if you or someone you know is dealing with diabetes, regardless of body size, this episode offers a reassuring and hopeful perspective. You're not alone in this journey! When I did an open call in our Midlife Feast Community for anyone who was willing to do a story session, I was thrilled when long-time member Melissa jumped at the chance to share her story. She shares how she has transitioned from lifetime member of Weight Watchers and all the tracking, measuring, and counting that came with it, to enjoying the freedom of being an intuitive eater. Melissa also shares her hard-earned wisdom of why we can’t rush the process of un-dieting and why it requires practicing self-compassion at every step. She shares why how she can enjoy a whole piece of cake (instead of 4 bites for 4 points) and she shares the sheer delight she finds in indulging in real coffee creamer each morning. When it comes to the diabetes conversation, have you ever felt like common sense was the missing ingredient? If so, you’re 100% correct. The fear-based messaging like “you’re just one donut away from diabetes” indicates how out of control it’s become. What I want you to walk away with is knowing that you can make peace with food, even with diabetes- and one of the best ways to do that is through adopting an intuitive eating approach. To help us tackle this topic, I’ve invited Danielle Bublitz, a weight-neutral registered dietitian who not only specializes in supporting clients with all different types of diabetes but has also lived with diabetes herself since she was a teenager. Danielle will help us debunk some of the most harmful myths about diabetes and help us understand why having diabetes is not your fault. Are you convinced that with your welcome to midlife and menopause letter, you’re also doomed to develop insulin resistance? It’s not much different from believing that every pregnant woman will also develop gestational diabetes. Is it possible? Sure. Does it happen to everyone? Definitely not. In this episode, I’ve invited Registered Dietitian, Val Schonberg back on the show to help challenge some of the most common assumptions about insulin resistance for women in menopause. Your body composition can change significantly in menopause, but it doesn’t automatically mean you’ve developed insulin resistance. In most cases, it just means you’re human. If you’ve been around here for a season or two, you know that I’ll never be in favor of taking anything off the menu when it comes to nutrition- with one exception: information overload. Wondering why in the world would a naturopathic doctor and dietitian would suggest that food is not medicine. It’s a great question and one I wanted to tackle for the last episode of season 3. There’s no doubt about it-food does incredible things for our bodies. It fuels, supports, and nourishes us every day. But here’s a little secret: broccoli alone can’t save your life. Food is just food! The pressure we feel to choose only the most “perfect” foods often ends up taking so much of our time and attention in an already demanding season of life. In this episode, I’ll be sharing 5 ways you can lower the bar to improve your health. I would love to know which one takes the pressure off your relationship with food the most! I’ve already got so much in store for you for Season 4, so take a minute to catch up on any episodes you’ve missed and I’ll meet you back here in September! What did you think of this episode? Midlife is the ultimate “messy middle”, isn’t it? But when we take time to listen to our bodies, get comfortable with not having control, and surround ourselves with authentic community, there are a lot of gifts to discover in this season too! In this episode, I’ve invited Ann Douglas, the author of Navigating the Messy Middle, a book that brilliantly unpacks the challenges and experiences of women in midlife, especially those of us who are parenting teens at the same time! Part of what makes this middle so messy is that it’s easy to feel like you’re always dropping a ball, between juggling the demands of caretaking, parenting, maintaining a career, or even dodging fear-based media around health and wellness. In this episode, we talk about these familiar challenges and hopefully provide you with a bit of reassurance that you’re not alone, and it will get better. But here’s what I hope will be your #1 takeaway: life is far from over. Midlife is the chance to become your own expert in self-compassion, expression, growth, and trying on new hobbies, all for the joy of it! Have you ever noticed that as you embrace midlife, you discover this newfound ability to stop doing all the things that just don’t serve you anymore? Isn’t it fantastic? My guest today Kate Codrington is joining me to help us understand that this fresh confidence and freedom has a name, and is also known as the autumn of perimenopause. But you might be more familiar with the experience of “meno-rage”, where your emotions feel completely out of control which leads us to explode and feel overwhelmed by the fallout. Kate helps us understand that this is an invitation to become aware of the gap between what you need, and what you’ve received at this point in life. When we can identify what we’re missing, we’re better able to find ways to express and use this energy for good and invite more pleasure into our lives daily! Today I have a very special treat for you in this Q&A session with Registered Dietitian Amanda Bullat, who (*spoiler alert*) I am thrilled to announce will be joining us as a regular expert resource in the Midlife Feast community very soon! In this episode, we tackle three of the most-asked questions about un-dieting in midlife. The answers to these questions are helpful for anyone who has considered intuitive eating before but maybe got bogged down by the most common challenges and misconceptions related to un-dieting. We talk about how tempting it is to sprinkle in formerly “successful” dieting strategies while you learn to become an intuitive eater, as well as how to challenge the most common fears that pop up when you let go of tracking, measuring, and dieting. If you’re navigating any stage of midlife right now, there’s a good chance wellness culture has made an impact on your relationship with food. While the principles of wellness culture tote the appearance of supporting your physical health, the moralization of food can wreak havoc on your mental health by heaping on unnecessary guilt and shame. In this Story Session episode, a Midlife Feast Community Member joins me to share her journey of un-dieting from wellness culture. She’s learned the importance of letting go of restrictive food rules, how to question societal expectations, and how to prioritize a more balanced sense of well-being. When we discover the courage to challenge wellness culture's influence in our lives, we can develop a more sustainable relationship with food. And the real payoff is that we have more room for self-discovery and creativity in midlife-two key ingredients for making midlife that much sweeter. What did you think of this episode? Along with hot flashes, sleep challenges in midlife and menopause can take a toll on your well-being. While you may be 1000% sure that spending the rest of your life on a diet is NOT the life for you…have you ever found yourself thinking that the path to becoming an intuitive eater doesn’t feel all that intuitive? If so, welcome! This episode if for you. The good news is that you are not alone! How do I know? Because of the messages I regularly get from women who are all in what I call the “messy middle” on the road to intuitive eating. Yes, intuitive eating begins with understanding how to stay in tune with your body’s hunger and fullness cues. But it often feels overwhelming as you learn to navigate all of the other reasons we eat. So in this episode, I'll help you sort through three common speed bumps that can bring your intuitive eating journey to a screeching halt. If movement had zero impact on your body size, would you still choose to move? If the answer is no, then I encourage you to join me and Christine Chessman in this episode to learn why joyful movement is key to making movement sustainable in midlife and beyond. If you’ve started an intuitive eating journey, it is not uncommon to feel the desire to break up with your usual workout routine too. In honor of Osteoporosis Awareness Month, I’ve invited movement educator Rebekah Rotstein to shed light on the topic of bone health. It’s incredibly common to avoid thinking about the strength of our bones until later in life, which might be too late if your goal is to be resilient and independent as you age. Rebekah shares the many factors we need to understand about bone health and what screenings we need to ask for starting in perimenopause if we haven’t already. If you’ve begun your menopause journey, you’ve probably had to deal with hot flashes by now. When they first start, they can certainly take you by surprise, especially since the experience of them can vary a lot from person to person. In this episode, I’m going to break down what is happening in your body (more specifically in your brain) when hot flashes strike. When you’re looking for a medical provider in midlife, finding someone who is committed to listening, staying curious, and staying up to date on research are just some of the top priorities. But when you can find a woman who has some skin in the midlife game, well, many times you’ve hit the jackpot. My guest on today’s Story Session is health coach and dietitian, Tracy Kelly. She’s sharing her story about how her practice has been transformed as a result of having recently started perimenopause. As universal as the symptoms of menopause can be, each of us has a story to tell. You probably already know that protecting our bones in midlife and beyond is a top priority. The problem is that like much of the health information we’re exposed to it doesn’t always translate into practical how-to strategies. Instead, it can induce a lot of fear about getting an osteoporosis diagnosis, also known as the “silent disease” since there are so few outward signs and symptoms. In this episode, I’m joined for a second time by my friend Niamh Daly who will help us understand what is really happening to our bones in post-menopause. She will also help us understand why focusing on movement, balance, and posture are key to slowing bone loss. You’ll also walk away from this episode with examples of simple low-impact exercises you can do anywhere throughout your day. It’s high time to challenge the idea that movement only happens once a day in concentrated bursts. Your bones will thank you when you do! What memories do you have of diet culture as you were growing up? If you’re like many parents in our community, there’s a good chance you’d like to spare your children from these experiences altogether. That’s why I invited Registered Dietitian and author of Diet-Proof Your Daughter, Amelia Sherry to the podcast. We take a deep dive into understanding what’s at the root of our desire for our kids to be healthy and have a healthy relationship with food. Even if you’ve worked hard to keep diet culture out of your house, there are so many ways our kids can still feel pressured to fit into certain body shape expectations. Amelia will share some helpful questions you can ask your kids in order to challenge common examples of diet, food, and health misinformation. We will also talk about ways to help our kids feel welcome to try, enjoy, and have access to all kinds of food (even sugar) so that they learn how their bodies can communicate with them. While you would probably guess that the average age of women going through menopause is between 51-52, you might not know that approximately 1% of women go through menopause prematurely before age 40. In today’s story session, I am joined by Midlife Feast Community member, Jen, who is sharing her experience of going through Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI). It’s easy to imagine how disruptive and confusing it would be to experience symptoms like hot flashes and long gaps between periods at the age of 31. You’ll discover how Jen put the pieces together pre-diagnosis and learned the best ways to support her health post-diagnosis, which included joining The Midlife Feast Community! Midlife can be one of the most overwhelming seasons of life. It honestly feels like everything you are responsible for is a non-negotiable. But if you’re feeling like everything in your mind and body is pointing towards burnout, then something has to give- how do choose what to say no to? In this episode, I’ve invited my friend and Burnout and Alcohol Coach Wendy McCallum back on the show to walk us through how to start making these kinds of tough decisions in midlife. What I love about Wendy is that her advice is so practical and empowers you to take action on what you want most starting today, not tomorrow. So if you’re searching for ways to show up more intentionally for yourself and everyone around you, do whatever you have to do to let a ball drop for the next thirty minutes and tune into this episode. I know that the nuggets of wisdom you gain from Wendy will be time well spent and the best investment you’ll make in yourself in a long time. If you’re burnt out on dieting, you’re probably interested in exploring a concept we talk about a lot around here: gentle nutrition. While most people are eager to get to the “good part” when learning to eat intuitively, gentle nutrition is one of the last steps of the journey of intuitive eating. Why? Because we have to un-do a lot of the default programming leftover from years of dieting and diet culture. In this episode, I’ve invited fellow non-diet dietitian Rachael Hartley on the show to take a deep dive into understanding gentle nutrition- including who it’s for, how to apply it, and the most common hiccups that people experience along the way. Join us if you’re ready to examine your relationship with food! While you may have expected many of the physical symptoms of menopause, the one that might really take you by surprise is brain fog. If you find daily tasks a real slog, you’re struggling to focus, or just forgetful in ways you would have never dreamed possible-know that this is a very common midlife experience. But what is really going on and is there anything we can do to better support our brains in this season? In this episode, I’ll share how hormones are the culprits (yet again) and the good news that brain fog won’t last forever! While what you eat won’t make the brain fog totally disappear, there are several things that you can do to support your brain, which I’ll share too. I’ll also let you in on one of the sneaky reasons that brain fog intensifies-and it’s one I bet you haven’t considered! 🌴 Register HERE to join me for the retreat in Bali September 19-26! 🌴 What did you think of this episode? When it comes to movement and exercise, how do you define what “counts”? Are you tempted to think that exercise has to be miserable if it’s going to have an impact? If so, you’re definitely not alone, and today’s conversation is just for you. Join me and my return guest, Dr. Maria Luque, as we take a deep dive into understanding the reasons we have come to believe that the only legitimate forms of exercise must feel like pure torture. We’ll also discuss why most people mistakenly make body change their motivation for working out, and how staying stuck in that mindset may be hurting your efforts to work on your body image. If that sounds familiar, it’s time to refocus your energy and your efforts. Then you can start making sure that having fun is your number requirement for getting - and staying active. Rise and grind. No pain, no gain. You snooze, you lose. The overuse of phrases like these is why we’re so damn tired. Rest is not a reward for productivity. It’s a need, and it’s critical for us to function. While rest is 100 % necessary, discovering what rest means to us personally can be challenging. That’s why I’ve invited psychologist, author, and expert in self-care and rest, Suzy Reading to the show. As many of you already know since I shared it on Instagram, I recently celebrated my 1-year menoversary. It’s officially been one year since my last period, which also means I’m now in post-menopause. Having taken the time to journal and track this journey, I was able to compile a lot of information and compile a list of 8 things I wish someone had shared with me before perimenopause started. Being part of the “lucky” 20% of women who start perimenopause before 40, I wanted to let you in on what you should look for things you can do to support your body, and even the surprising things you can look forward to! I hope this will really fill in any gaps or unanswered questions about this stage of life that you might still have. If you were one of the many women who reached out in response to sharing my story, thank you so much for your encouragement, your questions, and for sharing your own stories. Midlife is often when the toll of a decade (or more) of time spent trying to lose weight through dieting sets in. And what follows is a new sense of panic, driven by the idea that if you haven’t been able to get comfortable in your own skin by now, time is running out. And as new research suggests, it’s this body dissatisfaction that puts many women at risk of developing eating disorders later in life. In this episode, I’ve invited Val Schonberg, RD to expose the roots of eating disorders in midlife and why so few people, including the medical community, are noticing how widespread this struggle is for women in perimenopause and menopause. Join us as we talk about why it’s so easy to hide an eating disorder, how we can unintentionally encourage them, and how to identify more of what we can control without compromising our health. When you know better, you do better. And if you're like many of the women in midlife I talk to, your desire to move away from diet culture may be in part motivated by your desire to change things for the next generation...I know mine was. But getting diet culture out of the house means not only changing our behaviour, but also the language we use to describe food, bodies, and even health in general. In this episode, dietitian Jenn Messina RD helps us understand why so many of us were programmed into diet culture from a young age, how to go back and repair when you say something you don't mean, and even how to talk to other family members when diet talk is the uninvited guest at the table. Most women notice changes in sleep as they transition through perimenopause, and many go to great lengths to be able to fall asleep, and stay asleep, more easily. Did you know that globally, cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death in women? Research suggests that 1 out of 2 women don't, and this conversation with Dr. Alex Verge ND about cholesterol, heart health, and menopause is full of things women need to know as they go through the menopause transition. We discuss myths about cholesterol, the role of diet vs genetics, and why dietary dogma often gets in the way of making changes that stick. Dr. Alexandra Verge is a naturopathic doctor who loves talking about heart health. In her 20 years of clinical work, her focus has shifted from general practice to issues more commonly experienced by people as they age; arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis, and, in particular, cardiovascular disease. Today's episode of The Midlife Feast may not be of interest to everyone, but it's an important conversation to have as many women often find themselves trying to conceive after 40. And the hormonal changes that are happening in perimenopause can make getting pregnant, and staying pregnant, more challenging. Dr. Jordan Robertson ND is my guest today, and we talk about why fertility declines as we age, what hormones are involved in assessing fertility, why integrative approaches may be better than alternative ones, and why you shouldn't lose hope if you find yourself struggling to conceive. Dr. Jordan is a Naturopathic Doctor, author, and podcaster who is taking women's health research and making it more accessible for the everyday woman. Her mission is to create confident women's health consumers and help women learn to take care of themselves and their families with the best research in integrative and conventional medicine. This week's episode is a story session about Lindsay's experience of going into menopause at 42, and what she'd like others to know about her experience. While perimenopause is often missed, or misdiagnosed for several years, it's even more likely to be missed for women who go into menopause early before the age of 45. And for women who stop having periods earlier than expected, it's important to have a hormone-savvy practitioner on their team to help them manage the long-term risks of being without estrogen for longer than expected. Even if you're not on an anti-diet journey, you're going to want to listen to this episode with Dr. Maggie Landes MD. We talk about her cancer diagnosis and how her journey convinced her to break up with the BMI, why most clinical encounters don't require your weight (and how to talk to your doctor about it), and why telling someone to "lose weight" is not only bad medicine but unethical. Maggie Landes is a board-certified physician, public health nutritionist, and anti-diet wellness expert. Her dual-mission is focused on not just helping women in midlife escape the grips of diet culture and recover from their lifelong turbulent relationship with food, but Maggie, in her Pro2Pro services, supports other health professionals to participate in, and promote, a weight-neutral approach to practice. She is also the creator and host of “The Eatfluencer Podcast” where she and her guests unpack all the issues related to constructing a healthy, complete, and high-quality life unlimited by the oppression of diet culture. All of her personal coaching and programs support the Health at Every Size philosophy (HAES®), the framework of Intuitive Eating, and a weight-inclusive, body-neutral approach to health and wellness. Welcome to my 5-day miniseries on Un-Dieting in Midlife. Today is day 1, and in this short episode I'm talking about why making your nutrition goals primarily about weight loss may be keeping you from what you're really looking for. I talk about why the desire for weight loss keeps us stuck in the diet cycle, and the beliefs that we need to change about diet, weight, and health to get out of the diet mentality (without feeling like we're free-falling!), and into a more sustainable relationship with food. If you can't imagine a world where your decisions about food aren't based on changing your weight, you'll definitely want to tune in. We've all heard the advice about strength training in midlife and menopause, but not everyone knows why it's so important, or how to create a relationship with strength training that fits into your life. And like most things related to exercise, the conversation around strength training often gets caught up in talk about metabolism and weight, leaving many women feeling like they're doing something wrong if it's "not working". So I love the conversation that I have with Dr. Maria Luque because we talk about what strength training actually is, why it's important to maintain muscle in midlife, how much and how often we should be incorporating strength-focused movement, and how to avoid the pitfalls of "all or nothing" thinking. Dr. Maria Luque is a fitness expert, health science professor, menopause nerd, and busy mother passionate about sharing knowledge and helping women lead healthier, happier lives. She's the creator of Fitness in Menopause , a company dedicated to helping women navigate the challenges and rewards of menopause. She currently holds both graduate and post-graduate degrees in health sciences and certifications as Certified Health Education Specialist and ACE Certified Personal Trainer and Fitness Nutrition Specialist. In her Fitness in Menopause Masterclass she helps women find the fun in movement during menopause and her course Menopausal Fitness: Training the Menopausal Client is a NASM, AFAA, and ACE- accredited continuing education course for fitness professionals. This week's podcast is a bit different than most of the "story sessions" I've done before. Like me, Crystal was bitten by the midlife creativity bug and she wants to inspire you to "start anywhere" too! Crystal Garrett is a broadcaster turned podcaster and host of the Start Anywhere Podcast. She is also a communications consultant, running and motivation coach and Pilates instructor. Crystal says she has two passions: telling stories and running. She has more than two decades of experience as a renowned broadcast journalist, TV and radio host, anchor, reporter, and producer. Crystal is also former national-class middle distance runner and former member of Canada’s national team for 10 K. She has helped coach two university teams to championship titles. Crystal says she owes everything good in her life to running, which she discovered accidentally at age 12. Since then, running has been an ongoing source of joy, confidence, friendships, and travel opportunities. Running opened the door to her career in broadcasting. Crystal met her husband of 25 years on her university track team, and she still runs for fun with him several times per week. Occasionally, she runs with her three teenaged children. Beans and lentils are a midlife gal's best friend, and not just because they're a source of phytoestrogens! They're versatile, tasty, and a great source of fiber and protein. But if adding them into your regular diet has been a challenge, Fiona will inspire you to give them a try! We had a great conversation about why Fiona's personal experience of going into medical menopause prompted her to cook with beans and lentils more often, how phytoestrogens may help some women manage the symptoms of menopause, why soy doesn't have to be feared and she shares her best tips for easy and delicious ways to enjoy them regularly. Fiona Staunton is a culinary tutor at Fiona's food for life , She is a trained chef with a degree in education and inspires people to cook from scratch and nourish themselves and those around them. Her six-week virtual cooking course aims to alleviate symptoms of menopause and perimenopause in women to improve their day-to-day lives through educated meal plans and nutritional recipes that the whole family will love. If you're one of the estimated 40-60% of women who experience sleep changes in perimenopause or menopause, you're going to want to tune in to this episode! We discuss why sleep changes so much as our hormones change, why falling asleep and staying asleep aren't always the same thing, and the solutions we should be exploring to prioritize getting a full night's rest. We also cover the topic of meal timing, and what you should be eating to get more zzzs. Dr. Leigha Saunders is a naturopathic doctor obsessed with all things sleep. In her waking hours, you can find her on a mission to help other women gain energy, balance their moods, regulate hormones and sleep deep at night - particularly as they navigate hormone changes from PMS to menopause. Her goal is to help women reclaim their rest so they can do what sets their soul on fire during the day. Leigha's ultimate mission is to help women chase their dreams, not exhaustion! Outside of work, you can find Leigha on her paddle board, under one of her mom's homemade quilts with a coffee or tea (depending on the time of day, of course!), soaking in her hot tub or playing fire rescue with her son. This story session shares Cherie's story of going into perimenopause in her mid-30s, earlier than anyone was expecting. Cherie shares how she felt when her medical provider dismissed her concerns, and how she's had to expand her support circle to get the help she needed to cope with meno-rage and body changes, two common early symptoms of perimenopause. Women who enter perimenopause before 40 often feel dismissed when they bring up the possibility of hormone changes related to perimenopause, and are more likely to go years before getting treatment. Is hormone replacement therapy (HRT) everything it's cracked up to be? Who should (and shouldn't) use it? When, and for how long? Do the benefits outweigh the risks? These are just a few of the questions I cover in this episode of The Midlife Feast with my guest Dr. Annice Mukherjee, a consultant endocrinologist, hormone expert, and author of 'The Complete Guide to The Menopause'. Dr. Mkherjee brings her three decades of experience to the midlife table, along with her personal experience of going through early menopause due to a cancer diagnosis ten years ago. We discuss why women were scared off of hormone therapy in 2001, and what has changed in the past 20 years since the results of the WHI study were published. Body confidence often feels like the final frontier for many women, and sometimes it can feel impossible. What does real body confidence look like? And what can women in all bodies start (and stop!) doing to feel good in their skin, and have compassion when they have a "bad body day". I talk to Dr. Jillian Murphy, creator of the food freedom and body love method about what it takes to develop "real" body confidence.
