Rest is one of the most important aspects of overall health and well being. Yet it is extremely undervalued and even avoided in our high productivity, high expectation and high hustle culture. In today's episode of Meet Your Body, Jessica discusses how rest has to be an intentional aspect of your physical and mental health. She dives into: - What true rest is and isn't - The physiological changes in your body when you experience rest - The value of five minute changes throughout your day - Specific actions you can take starting today to make rest a part of your life From over committing to doom scrolling to wanting to have that perfect image for social media, we have lost our connection to rest in our lives. The good news is that we can make changes today to discover the practice of rest - and, ultimately, joy - for ourselves. In the final episode of our limiting thoughts series, Jessica talks about the importance of knowing that healing is not linear. It's easy to get stuck in the thought pattern that there is a clear finish line to our health and wellness. We either reach a goal or heal an injury in the designated time frame and then move on. That thinking isn't usually realistic and can often times make us feel we have failed when it doesn't come to pass! In reality, healing is not linear. There are ups and downs and starts and stops. It's normal to feel like you are progressing one day and then feel you've taken a step back the next day. It can all be a very normal part of the process and the more we accept that healing isn't a clear cut and linear process and work with it, the more we can feel we are empowered and encouraged in our own health journeys. In the third episode of our limiting thoughts series, Jessica discusses the need to let go of the false idea that your body is the enemy. Society sets us up to believe we are many different parts and that our minds and our bodies are separate. We develop an idea that our bodies are "bad" and need to be mastered by our minds. When we experience chronic pain, injuries, trauma, illness or disappointment, this becomes even more prevalent. In today's episode, Jessica talks about the history of this thought process and how it has caused tremendous damage to our relationship with our own body. She talks to you about the moment she realized her body was her partner in this life and that she could work with it and honor it - even in the midst of auto immune disease, infertility and more. This episode is imperative for everyone who has ever looked at their body as the enemy. You'll learn how to take the first steps towards believing in the worth and value of your body and the importance of walking through life as partners with your body. In the second episode of our limiting thoughts series, Jessica talks about the ways the All of Nothing Mentality can hold you back. In the health and fitness world, it's easy to think it needs to be all or nothing. We feel we need to do a full hour workout or it's not worth it. We think we need to workout every single day or we might as well not workout at all. We assume every workout needs to be the hardest we've ever done or it doesn't help. None of those are true! Those thoughts can actually cause feelings of discouragement and defeat that lead us to quit a health or fitness program all together. In today's episode we will smash the limiting thought of believing our movement and health habits need to be all or nothing! We will talk through the reality of maintaining a movement program in real life and the power of consistency and patience. At the time of this recording, we are experiencing an unfathomable tragedy in the world. The pain and suffering we see in this world can be overwhelming. When you add the 24 hour news cycle and social media, it can feel like a constant bombardment of sadness and pain. Today we are discussing what this continual stress can do to our bodies and some steps we can take in order to calm our nervous systems and find some healing. Jessica acknowledges that she is coming from a place of privilege in that she is safe and has access to food and water. She is not in danger or worried about family members. Many of you listening are in the same situation. We have the ability to step away from the stress of these tragedies, while many people do not. This episode is not comparing those situations in any way. Our hearts are broken for all suffering directly in the world right now. For those who are safe and feeling the stress of the destruction and helplessness in the world, it's important to take care of yourself so that you are ready to be a helper to those in need when the calling comes. Today's episode will help you do that, while reminding you that you are not alone in your sadness. Jessica would never have described herself as an anxious or stressed person growing up. Then, in her early 20's, she experienced firsthand the physical issues that can arise after living with chronic stress. In this Meet Your Body episode, Jessica tells her own story of what led to that life changing time and some of the strategies she learned in order to move forward. Jessica then talks about how chronic stress manifested again later in life and the affects it had on her nervous system and body. Finally, she'll give you the specific steps she's taken in the past two years to regulate her own nervous system, eliminate chronic stress and find a place of peace and hope. This is a vulnerable and honest discussion around the pressures we put on ourselves, the harmful affects of trying to please everyone and what we can do in order to feel our best and contribute to our communities. We are excited to bring Rachel Piper to the Meet Your Body podcast! Rachel (NCPT) is a classically trained comprehensive Pilates teacher who believes that you should love your body for what it can do no matter your size, your age, or your current abilities. Rachel describes herself as a "Pilates obsessed human practicing and teaching in a bigger body". In today's episode, Jessica and Rachel discuss what this statement means and how to feel encouraged as a mover if you also identify as a bigger bodied human . They dive into how the fitness world typically fails people in bigger bodies and what practical things you can do (as a mover and teacher) to make movement more accessible. They will then round out the conversation discussing what accessibility looks like in fitness and how this applies to the neurodiverse population, a subject that is near and dear to Rachel's heart. This is a rich, transparent and important conversation that all movers and teachers would benefit from listening to! In today’s episode of Meet Your Body, Jessica gives you a behind the scenes look into her own health journey and how she ultimately became a champion for people going through similar experiences. You’ll hear about her diagnosis with endometriosis at the age of 25, her multiple surgeries, experience with infertility, how she learned to advocate for herself and ultimately how she came to feel strong and confident in her body. You’ll also hear a story from her past she’s never shared publicly before (and how that helped shape who she is today and the work she does). Our hope is that you relate to these stories and feel hope knowing you aren’t alone in your own health journey!
