The Reversing Heart Disease Summit has an encore this week. If you missed any or all of it, register and listen now. It has been a smash hit, but there is one more chance to learn with Dr. Kahn, Dr. Fuhrman, and guests. Click Here To Register . This week at Heart Doc VIP, Dr. Kahn reports back from his Michigan office on great news about a cholesterol-lowering medicine called bempadoic acid, and on vegan vs. keto diets and their impact on the planet. The main focus is the new report suggesting that a non-nutritive sweetener called erythritol, which is made in the body but also used as an additive in many foods, may be related to heart disease and cause blood to clot. The amount of erythritol found in many keto-friendly foods meets or exceeds the amount used in healthy human volunteers, suggesting it may play a role in excessive clotting. There will be many more studies on this exciting new topic.

The Reverse Heart Disease Naturally Summit is currently underway, but there's still time to register and access 51 amazing interviews. Join Dr. Kahn and co-host Joel Fuhrman, MD, for this incredible free online event. Click Here to Register In this week's episode, Dr. Kahn discusses the topics of sleep and longevity, the risks of skipping breakfast, and the impact of daily cannabis use on heart disease. He then focuses on new research that evaluates the role of LDL-cholesterol levels in predicting future heart attacks. It turns out that this depends on the coronary artery calcium score of the heart. If your score is zero, therapy with medications may not provide benefits in the short term. Tune in to learn more.

Dr. Kahn requests that you "Register now for the Reverse Heart Disease Naturally" Summit and learn with me, Dr. Joel Furhman, and more than 40 other world health experts". [CLICK HERE] to sign up. This week Dr. Kahn discusses if it is really true that to "build muscle you need to eat muscle". He quotes the literature that indicates that plant-based protein is healthier and supports healthy muscle growth if you do the hard work of gym time. He highlights vegan bodybuilders Nimai Delgado and Robert Cheeke. Robert Cheeke gained over 100 lbs. of muscle by spending time in the gym eating a clean plant diet without any supplements with only 10-15% of his 3,000 daily calories from protein sources like beans. Dr. Kahn disagrees strongly that to "build muscle you need to eat muscle". Maybe tofu, but not muscle.

Lectins are a family of proteins that bind to carbohydrates found throughout the plant and animal kingdoms. Some people, unfortunately, think of the healthiest foods on the planet, legumes, as plant sources of lectins to avoid. Not true. This week, Dr. Kahn talks about a lectin made by humans, galectin-3. The paradox is that this compound, measured on a simple lab test, is helpful at low doses but causes inflammation and scarring of at least the heart and kidneys. Modified citrus pectin blocks galectin-3 and is available as a capsule or powder developed by Isaac Eliaz, MD. A new sponsor this week is medicinemanplantco.com and discount code Kahn10 on The Blood Pressure Pill. Try it.

These past few weeks provided 3 more reasons to avoid red meat. These include the research on the meat rich Paleo diet and increased levels in the blood of TMAO. It also included more data about the concerning spread of the Lone Star tick and meat allergies. Finally, humans are not mice and we do not make neu5Gc. It turns out we have antibodies to neu5Gc from eating red meat from other species which is rich in neu5GC and creates inflammation and atherosclerosis. Overall, eat whole plant foods and your health will be protected.

The first man on the moon, the first mile under 4 minutes, the first person to pull on a cow's udder and drink it (the last one is a classic Mel Brooks joke). Dr. Kahn gets asked so often by patients if they are "trapped" by a family history of disease, heart, cancer, dementia and such. New data this week is the topic and the majority of the risk of diseases like diabetes type 2 and others are in OUR control, not genetic control. The word is lifestyle medicine. Food choices, exercise choices, sleep patterns, stress management, social support, smoking or not, and love and joy are able to speak to our genetic material and favor health and longevity. This is a powerful discussion.

There is some "good" news that is out but it is shocking for sure. The third leading cause of death overall in the USA is medical errors made in hospitals during treatment. Estimates from 200,000 to 400,000 deaths a year occur due to mistakes. Even more shocking is that the number of people seriously harmed that do not die may be 10-20 times higher! A brand new report suggests that number may have dropped to 161,000 deaths in the USA but still a gross and distressing number. If you can, stay out of hospitals. If you are in the hospital, have family members stay with you, even if overnight.

Is Diary Healthy? Dr. Kahn has a bias. Dr. Kahn thinks the data for consuming a whole food plant diet, organic if possible, is the optimal diet for the human population, the planet, and the rights of animals. This week a report suggested inadequate dairy may contribute to a significant number of cases of colorectal cancer. Dr. Kahn had many emails and calls about this. What to do when that data causes conflict? We will look honestly and openly at nutrition science on this edition of Heart Doc VIP on Empower Radio.

The discussion with other health care providers was animated but also revealing as to the difficulty getting credible information based in science. Paleo, not for Dr. Kahn, maybe not for anyone.
