Sponsored by ProLine Training Balls and Bluebook Sports Train with ProLine. Connect with college coaches on Bluebook Sports. In this powerful episode of the Coach Beede Podcast , Walter is joined by one of the most authentic voices in college baseball — Coach Matt Tyner , head coach at Towson University. What unfolds is a masterclass on today’s recruiting landscape, roster caps, the transfer portal, preparation, development, and the realities families need to understand as college baseball continues to evolve. Coach Tyner brings blunt honesty, decades of wisdom, and a fresh dose of perspective every parent and player needs. The Roster Cap Reality (34 players): Why roster limits are changing everything — scrimmages, depth charts, cuts, development, and year-to-year planning. Transfer Portal Chaos: How the December 1 roster deadline conflicts with portal timing, why the NCAA may have miscalculated, and how this affects thousands of players. DSA (Designated Student Athlete) Loopholes: Why some programs may carry 40+ players and how DSA spots impact recruiting and retention. Why Older Players Dominate: From 23–25-year-olds to former pro players entering college baseball — what this means for incoming freshmen and recruiting classes. Is Division I Becoming MiLB Rookie Ball? Insight into MLB’s desire to reshape the development pipeline, shorten the draft, eliminate levels, and use college baseball as its feeder system. Summer Ball, Tampering & Retention: The real impact of summer leagues, player poaching, and how teams try to protect their culture and roster integrity. Recruiting Breakdown (Coach Tyner’s Ideal Mix): ✔️ 1/3 High School ✔️ 1/3 JUCO ✔️ 1/3 Transfer Portal A balanced strategy for success — and survival. The Value of Strength, Size & Tools: Why college baseball is bigger, stronger, faster than parents realize — and why strength training is no longer optional. Hit Tool vs. Speed: Can you hit? Then someone will find a place for your bat — but you still need a role, a skill, and a way to help a team win. Reality Check for Families: Most players in the portal will NOT find a lateral home. Coaches don’t cut with malice — they manage rosters, scholarships, rules, compliance, and performance. The Purpose of College Baseball: Growth. Maturity. Education. Competition. Identity. In this episode of the Coach Beede Podcast , Walter Beede welcomes Andy Partin , founder of the legendary Dirtbags Baseball organization and one of the most respected voices in amateur baseball. With nearly 30 years in the game — now also navigating the recruiting world as a parent — Andy brings a unique dual perspective on what families are facing in today’s college baseball landscape. Walter and Andy dig into the real pressures on high school athletes, the confusion parents face navigating camps and showcases, and why the Class of 2027 has become the “guinea pig” for the new NCAA recruiting rules. Andy explains how shrinking roster spots, delayed recruiting timelines, and the rise of older, more physical college rosters have completely reshaped the path for high school players. They also break down: Why 2028s and 2029s must stop chasing exposure and start chasing development How automated emails and showcase noise overwhelm families — and what actually matters What college coaches REALLY look for: the outliers, not the averages Why physicality and strength are now the great separators How to build a proactive development plan at home (not just pay for more events) The role of social media, video quality, and communication in today’s recruiting The truth behind “fit, need, and opportunity” at every level — D1, D2, D3, NAIA, JUCO This episode is loaded with actionable advice for parents and players who want clarity instead of chaos in the recruiting process. Answering Questions about Vanderbilt’s Baseball Scholarship Inside Vanderbilt Baseball: Insights From The Head Coach The Vanderbilt Baseball Coaching Philosophy Vanderbilt’s head baseball coach, Tim Corbin, answers your top questions about Vanderbilt’s baseball program. We discuss what Vanderbilt values in a player, creating the right environment for young baseball players to grow, why recruiting the best talent isn’t the most important consideration…and what is . Coach Corbin shares his coaching philosophy and emphasizes the importance of focusing on the growth and development of the players rather than just chasing outcomes. He also talks about the role of parents in supporting their children's love of the game, rather than adding undue pressure and expectations. The episode touches on various topics such as player recruitment, commitment dates, strength training, and emotional growth in the Vanderbilt baseball program. You’ll hear from: Tim Corbin, Vanderbilt’s head coach Tim Corbin Kaleb Roper, player Mason Koppens, player Darren Willis, player What we discussed (00:14) Vanderbilt College Baseball (01:13) Preparation that leads up to college baseball season (04:30) Recruiting for Vanderbilt OR What recruits value about Vanderbilt OR Why players come to Vanderbilt (06:41) Do scores matter? (10:36) Coaching vs. chasing outcomes OR Chasing outcomes vs. process (16:26) What makes a star Vanderbilt player? OR How to standout as a Vanderbilt player OR Playing to win vs. playing to enjoy (20:01) What money can’t buy in baseball (23:06) Are we pushing athletes away from baseball? OR Why we’re not using money as an bargaining chip in Vanderbilt (27:24) Being a supportive parent vs. helicopter parent OR The wrong way to parent a baseball athlete (38:38) Commitment date for upcoming recruits in baseball (41:08) The story of Tyler Campbell OR What athletes don’t understand like Tyler Cambell did (46:11) Emotional growth in Vanderbilt baseball (50:36) What makes a student-athlete exceptional (52:41)The right time for strength training for student-athletes 3 things to learn from Vanderbilt’s head baseball coach: The most important factor when picking where to play: Building relationships with pro players is one of the key reasons young baseball players want to come to Vanderbilt. What makes college baseball so fulfilling goes beyond the scores - emotional connections make it fulfilling. Why a baseball coach shouldn’t chase outcomes: When the outcome isn’t what you’re after as a baseball coach, you’ll be able to find yourself and be more present. Your focus should be the growth of the kids you are coaching, not the outcome. Parents should not get in the way of making baseball enjoyable: The role of an athlete’s parents should be to support them in enjoying something they love, rather than add the pressure of expectations to their life. Athletes will only grow if they feel a natural love towards what they’re doing. Memorable moments: “There are 300 teams, and there's only one team that's gonna win at all. So you have to understand it's going to be about the process. If you don't feel it's about the process, then you might as well get out of the game right now and do something else, ‘cause you're gonna drive yourself crazy.” (1 Learn more about your ad choices.
