Moshe Rabbeinu argued with Hashem that if Hashem were to destroy the Jewish People then he may as well erase Moshe's name from the Torah. Moshe had become one with the Torah to the degree that it was no longer necessary to mention his name. He was the Torah and the Torah was him. Klal Yisrael, Hashem and the Torah are one. Until Rivka came onto the scene, her impact was not felt and this was what Yitzchak was grieving. He could not understand how his mothers Avodah was somehow discontinued. When Rivka married Yitzchak she took on the countenance of Sarah Imeinu and in a certain sense, she became her. The miracles were once again brought back into reality and this is how Yitzchak was consoled. Through Rivka he understood how his mothers impact continued to be a part of this world."

Every single korban has salt in it but none are allowed to have yeast or honey (with the exception of the shtei halachem on Shavuos). The Rambam explains that the Torah did not allow honey or yeast because that is what the baalei avodah zarah used for their sacrifices. What does this mean for us? As the beginning of Maggid, Ha Lachma Anya contains within it all of Maggid. And yet it is a section of the Haggadah that makes very little sense. In contrast to the rest of the Haggadah it is written in Aramaic. Why? Ha Lachma Anya does not seem to have anything to do with Maggid. Why is it placed there? This is not the bread that our forefathers ate in Mitzrayim, it's the food that they ate when they left Mitzrayim? The Magen Avraham says that we ought to say "This is "like" the food that they ate..." but the Mogen Avraham says lo hifsid if we say it according to our current girsa. Why doesn't the Magen Avraham mandate that we say "like"? Why does he allow the current girsa? He even makes it sound like it is correct and that we have lost nothing by saying the current girsa? This is obviously not an invitation - that should have happened in Shul. At the very least before Kiddush so that the person being invited could have had the first cup of wine. The door is not even opened! What's the difference between those who are hungry and those who are needy? What does it mean to invite some to celebrate Pesach with us? They can't join us in the Korban Pesach, it's too late! They have to be included before the Korban was shechted. What's the difference between now we are here and now we are slaves? What's the connection between all three of these things? In this shiur, delivered in Monsey, Rav Burg explains how we are still in Egypt and the process of leaving Mitzrayim is the story of our entire history. Ha Lachma Anya is a road map for how we leave Mitzrayim. 1 - We recognize our state of being in Mitzrayim. 2 - We realize that we are part of something larger than ourselves. The washstand in the Mishkan was made of the hand mirrors that the women used in Mitzrayim to ensure the continuity of Klal Yisrael. Moshe Rabbeinu was reluctant to use these mirrors but Hashem said they were most precious to Him. What was the machlokes between Moshe and Hashem. Why were these mirrors so precious? In this shiur Rav Burg explains how the way we we look at things is what makes them last. It influences the way we act in this world. Only when the Kohanim washed their hands and feet in the kiyor made from these mirrors could they bring atonement to Klal Yisrael.

The pomegranates stand alone (according to Rashi) to show that even in our state of imperfection there is beauty in our struggle.

True joy comes from finding the completion within the incompletion. But there is great vulnerability in admitting that we are incomplete and that takes a tremendous amount of honesty and courage.

Yaakov Avinu took with him the Atzei Shitim from Eretz Canaan to Mitzrayim in order the Klal Yisrael should have the wood in order to build the Mishkan and the Aron. Why did he not just instruct them to take the Atzei Shitim from Mitzrayim? Or better yet, just take them from the Midbar and not have to carry them throughout the desert? In this shiur Rav Burg explores the part of us that is foolish. On the one hand we can fall into the foolishness of sin and on the other hand we can be so foolish as to believe in and achieve the impossible. A Jew must take the Atzei Shitim, tress of folly, from Eretz Yisrael so that they may have hope in Mitzrayim and build a dwelling place for Hashem down below.

When Yisro joins Moshe Rabbeinu in the desert, Moshe relays all of the happenings that occurred to Klal Yisrael. This despite the fact that the passuk already tells us that Yisro had heard everything. Why did Moshe tell Yisro what he already knew? What was being added? Rashi tells us that Yisro heard about the splitting of the sea and the war with Amalek. This is difficult to understand since the passuk tells us that Yisro heard everything that happened. Why do Chazal highlight these two events? In this shiur Rav Burg explains that difference between excitement and inspiration. Excitement does not last but true inspiration which comes from relevant education lasts a life time.

In order to marry Tzipporah, Moshe Rabbeinu makes a deal with Yisro to give his first born child to Avodah Zara. How couold Moshe have done this? Are we not obligated to give our lives in order to avoid serving idols? Not only does this go against the Torah but it is against the Sheva Mitzvos Bnei Noach as well! In this shiur, Rav Burg explains two methods of raising our children: Rational - exposing our children to everything and showing them the logical truth of Judaism vs Suprarational - raising our children to believe that there is a truth that transcends logic, a truth that goes beyond our rational minds.

Rav Burg began this shiur by asking four questions: 1. We sang Shira in the zechus of our Emunah. What is the connection between our emunah and singing? 2. Az Yashir is the source for techias hameisim in the Torah. What is the connection between techias hameisim and singing? 3. Every morning we sing Az Yashir in Pesukei D'zimra. P"D is about praise and thanksgiving for the greatness of Hashem. Az Yashir does not fit this theme. 4. The Gemara in Megillah (16b) teaches that the sections of the Torah involving Shirah need to be written “ariach al gabei leveinah” the script of the line above is written over the empty space of the line below it, in a bricklaying pattern. Rashi comments that there is actually more empty space than words in the Shirah – more blanks than writing. What is the inner significance of this format? Rav Burg explains that Judaism has a body and a soul. The halacha is the body but emunah is the soul. Through our connection to the soul of Yiddishkeit, not only can we survive in Golus but we can even sing.

Vayechi - In this piece the Aish Kodesh teaches us how Yaakov Avinu being "blocked off" from revealing the end of days to his children was actually a sign of the redemption itself. When the damage of Golus reaches cosmic levels Hashem will surely bring the Geula. Vaeira - In this piece the Aish Kodesh teaches us the difference between chein, chesed and rachamim. Chein and Chesed have nothing to do with being judged. We find grace in Hashem's eyes not because we are worthy or unworthy but simply because. Similarly, Hashem does Chesed for us because he is the ultimate Baal Chesed, not because we are deserving. When it comes to Rachamim, mercy, we are in a state of judgement and Hashem finds something within us that we can be deserving of His mercy. Moshe Rabbeinu is commanded to treat Klal Yisrael gently because Pharaoh was working Klal Yisrael to death. In such a state they needed chein and chesed, not rachamim.

Moshe Rabbeinu wonders about the reason Klal Yisrael has not left Mitzrayim. Initially he believes that Klal Yisrael needs a warrior to teach them their strength but ultimately he learns that the reason Klal Yisrael has not left Mitzrayim is because of their lack of Achdus. To redeem Klal Yisrael Moshe Rabbeinu must learn to become a shepherd, taking care of the young sheep that has strayed from the rest of the flock. Yaakov blesses his children that the Egyptian ruler should have mercy on them. The Aish Kodesh asks, why doesn't he bless them that no harm should befall them. Just as Hashem creates an expanding universe and tells it to stop expanding so too there are different types of salvations. Sometimes salvation comes from an expanding process. You go to the doctor who diagnoses an illness, procure the medicine etc... Sometimes, if there is no time for an expanding process, Hashem says enough to the expansion. The salvation must come immediately. This is the deeper meaning of Hashem creating the world with middas harachamim before middas hadin. The mercy of Hashem bring a salvation immediately without any process needing to unfold.

In this week's Parsha Yaakov Avinu fell asleep at the Makom Hamikdash and dreamt of Malachim going up and down a ladder. Chazal tell us that Hashem had to protect Yaakov from these Malachim who wanted to kill him. The Ksav Sofer explains that they wanted to kill Yaakov because he fell asleep at such a holy place. The Gemara tells us that Hashem made the sun set early so that Yaakov Avinu would go to sleep. If that's the case then why would the Malachim want to kill him? He was simply doing what Hashem wanted!?! And is sleeping in the Makom Hamikdash worthy of the death penalty??? 1. The story of Eliezer finding a shidduch for Yitzchak comprises 67 pesukim in the Torah! Normally the Torah is concise but here Hashem sees fit to tell us the story in great detail. Why? 2. Eliezer gives Rivka a golden nose ring worth half a shekel and two bracelets each worth ten gold shekel. Rashi teaches that the nose ring is an allusion to the half a shekel that would one day be donated to the Mishkan and the bracelets are an allusion to the aseres hadibros. What does this have to do with marriage? Why does Eliezer see fit to bring these concepts to mind now? 3. The half shekel was a tikkun for the cheit haegel. Hashem showed Moshe a half shekel on fire because he could not understand how half a shekel could bring an atonement for such a terrible aveira. How does the fiery coin answer Moshe's question. In this shiur Rav Burg explains how these two gifts teach Rivka about having a healthy, non codependent relationship. Like the half shekel she is missing her other half but like the bracelets she is already whole. Being one half of a whole allows us to apologize and to forgive our spouse. Being whole means we allow our spouse to share their lives with us and we in turn share our lives with them.

In this exceptionally stirring shiur the Aish Kodesh asks why Hashem won't allow the tzaddikim to have serenity in this world. The Rebbe distinguishes between those who are silent because they choose not to speak and those who are mute because they have loss all capacity to process their trauma and give language to their pain. Still, even in this state, the mute person can gesture and communicate somewhat. Deeper still is the person whose pain is so exceptional that they cannot communicate their pain on any level. Their muteness is absolute. The Tzaddik who finds himself in such a state finds a way to cry out to Hashem and raise others up with him. The Tzaddik cannot be serene in such a state. He cannot accept his own pain and live a muted life. As he rises up he brings others with him. The Aish Kodesh had suffered heavy losses in his own life and in this shiur we gain insight into how to Aish Kodesh overcame his own pain and raised others with him.

Complexity hides Hashem's simple presence in creation. The greater the complexity, the greater the concealment. The simple Jew who serves Hashem simply because they're Jewish lacks the concealment of more complex Jews. The Aravos of Hoshana Rabbah are different than the aravos of the dalet minim. Though they both represent the simple Jews, the aravos of Hoshana Rabbah are not impacted in any way by the sophistication of the other minim. In that way, Hoshana Rabbah highlights the beauty of the simple Jews.

As Yaakov Avinu is sleeping and dreaming of the malachim going up and down the ladder, Rashi explains that it is Hashem who is guarding over him. The Aish Kodesh asks, why is it Hashem guarding over Yaakov and not a malach? Why does it repeat that he is being guarded twice? The Malachim of the ladder represent the nations of the world who are at war with each other. When they are fighting, Klal Yisrael is in danger. In these times we need the special shemira of Hashem Himself. When we have no zechusim of our own, we are still the children of the Avos and Hashem watches over us in their merit. The Rebbe explains that there is a difference between that which is written and that which is spoken. That which is spoken does not last but that which is written can be taken with us. The Rebbe calls upon us, in times of great struggle, to write our inspiration on our hearts so we can take it with us.

This kinnah, the last of the kinnos, is a kinnah of hope. It speaks about the pain of a woman in labor and the pain of a young bride who lost her husband. The cry of labor is a cry that understands that while this may be exceptionally painful it is for an ultimate purpose. The cry of a young bride is a cry that speaks to the absolute chaos of this world. In her grief, as she refuses to let go of her husband who has passed on, she is giving language to her eternal love and the hope that she will one day be reunited with her husband. What we can feel is the pain of the shechina who longs to have a place in our world once again. Are we really crying out to connect to Hashem or are we just trying to solve our pain? The Aish Kodesh assures us that when we sincerely cry out to Hashem from a place of yishuv hadaas, Hashem silences the prosecuting angels and returns us to Him. In the final moments of her life Rachel Imeinu called her newborn son Ben Oni. In the very same passuk Yaakov calls the child Binyamin. Why doesn't Yaakov call Binyamin by the name Rachel chose for him? We know that Yaakov loved Rachel so deeply. Why do they spend their last moments on earth together fighting over the child's name? Why does the Torah refer to Binyamin as Binyamin and not Ben Oni? Does Hashem somehow choose Yaakov's side over Rachel? Does Hashem ignore the wish of a dying Tzadeikes like Rachel? Moshe's parents were Amram and Yocheved. In addition to being the wife of Amram, Yocheved was also Amram's aunt! Post Matan Torah this relationship would be prohibited but because the Torah had not yet been given there was no issur in their relationship. The question is, why was this unique union necessary? I struggle to find the balance because I married someone that holds himself to a specific standard in yiddishkeit and hashkafa and it’s something that’s top priority to me. I struggle when people say that I shouldn’t be involved or checking in, because if he were to become more lax in certain areas, I believe that it affects us as a family and impacts our future. This weeks question- Before I got married I would listen to shiurim online and hear Rabbeim tell their talmidim that if their wife wants something then that's it! He should do it for shalom bayis! While I appreciate the strong emphasis that is being placed on shalom bayis, I was wondering what my role is as "the wife". When do I tell my husband he needs to go to a different minyan? He can't go to seder? I once heard a Rav say that he had a long beard and it was a big part of his avodas Hashem and his wife didn't like it so he cut it. I don't want to abuse my power as "the wife" but I just don't know where the line is and what my mindset should be towards it all. Thank you

Question: 1. Rebbe, is there really such a thing of loving someone or doing something for someone else just because you want to give to them in the purest sense? I know that Ahava comes from the word Hav, which is give, but I think that according to psychology the only reason why we would give is because we get something back in return. 2. Isn’t it the same in a marriage. It’s not just giving because if you would only give and your spouse does not give back then you would not want to stay with them. So then wouldn’t it be a codependent relationship in terms of giving and taking, and therefore one can say that the motives behind the giving are ultimately how your spouse treats you after you have put in the effort by giving to your spouse and making them happy? Obviously you want your spouse to be happy but is it just because you enjoy it when they are happy? Even if someone gives their life for someone else can’t you say it’s because they wouldn’t want to live without them. I know there is something more to love and giving but I according to psychology there might not be. Why wouldn’t psychology be correct?

To sponsor please email us at Nitzotzos@gmail.com Question #1 - I continue to struggle with defining my hashkafa and often find that this issue is more prevalent in women, as it may come down to the fact that I don’t have a Rav who I turn to in a shiur setting etc. How does Rav Burg think this can be achieved for someone who strongly feels they are in need of that clarity that a somewhat more defined path could provide. Question #2 - I think it is easier for boys to know how they identify hashkafically. They have shiurs or rebbes that they may identify with or follow, while girls don’t necessary have something like morning shiur, night Seder etc. Since boys essentially have these different types of learning groups (topics of chassidus, or more litvish, etc) i think it is easier for them to know where they’re holding. For me, I find it extremely difficult to know what type of guy I “need” or to tell a shadchan, because I never really labeled myself as anything. I’m a frum yid! - what else do I say?
