Are you stuck at home right now? Yeah, me too. But that doesn't mean I've given up on getting better at tennis. Not at all! I am doing all kinds of things to improve my tennis game and you can too. Because just because we can't get out on the tennis court right now, doesn't mean there aren't things we can do in the comfort and safety of our own homes to get better at the game we all love so much. So, in this episode of Tennis Quick Tips, I'm going to tell you what I'm doing right now to play better tennis without playing tennis. One of the things that makes tennis a unique sport is that, in most of the matches we play, our opponent is also our umpire. The one person who has a definite interest in having calls go against us is often the very person making those calls. And because of this, because in the vast majority of our matches, there is an absence or a virtual absence of any on-court officials, cheating in tennis is very easy. All you have to do is say "out," and you can win the point. And win it with almost no penalty for this unethical behavior. So what can we do to deal with cheaters in tennis? How can we try to get our opponents to follow the rules? That's what we're talking about in this episode - how to deal with tennis cheaters. GET THE SHOW NOTES: Hi, it's Kim! Thanks for listening! If you have listened to past episodes of Tennis Quick Tips, then you already know how much I love to talk about the rules and matches and how that all works. But one thing I've never really talked about, for some unknown reason, is the difference between officiated and unofficiated tennis matches. And specifically, how the rules can be a little different depending on whether you are playing an officiated or an unofficiated match. So in this episode we'll get into the difference between officiated and unofficiated matches and why you should care. GET THE SHOW NOTES: Hi, it's Kim! Thanks for listening! Hey all! As I’m recording this episode, it’s March 13, 2020 and things in the world are disconcerting, to put it mildly. So because this is having a big impact not just on our lives, but on our tennis lives, I’m doing a super quick podcast episode here about COVID-19, otherwise known as the Corona Virus. You’ll notice there’s no music and none of the other fancy stuff I usually do in my podcasts. I just wanted to put this together quickly because I think this is an important topic for all of us. The fact is that the threat of Corona Virus is quite serious. We all need to do what we can to prevent the spread and “flatten the curve” and if that means not playing tennis for a while, then that’s what I’ll do. But for now, I’m still playing. And while I’m not a doctor, and nothing I say here should be taken as medical advice, I do have a few safety precautions I’m observing to hopefully keep myself and those around me healthy. And I want to let you know what I’m doing so you can think about what you might do if you’re still able to get out and play some tennis. Again, this is not medical advice, just some common sense tips from one tennis player to another. So listen in for my tips or health precautions that I think tennis players can observe to stay health and to help protect the health of others. GET THE SHOW NOTES: Hi, it's Kim! Thanks for listening! Well, here's something I've never done before. I'm going back into the Tennis Quick Tips archives to bring you a "best of" episode! Today, I'm going all the way back to Episode 3 of Tennis Quick Tips, which was called "What To Do When You Win the Spin." And I'm going back to this episode because I not only had a listener recently ask me about this topic, but it also came up in a tennis match I just played. Now, I've never done this before, replay a previous episode. And that's because I have a LONG LIST of things I still have never talked about and want to talk about on this podcast. But I decided to re-listen to this episode, thinking I would update it and add some new info, but it turns out that Episode 3 pretty much did a good job of analyzing this episode and explaining what I think you should do when you win the spin. So, listen in to what I had to say way back in Episode 3 and then I'll give you my thoughts on what I do now when this comes up in my matches. Here it is - a blast from the Tennis Quick Tips past, what to do when you win the spin! GET THE SHOW NOTES: Hi, it's Kim! Thanks for listening! Well, I’m still talking about the Australian Open! I’m sure I’ll bring up that time I went to the Australian Open in this podcast every chance I get. Anyway, a super critical match that happened while I was there was the quarterfinal match between Roger Federer and up-and-comer Tennys Sandgren from the USA. During this match, Federer performed an absolute miracle, saving - get this - seven match points and ultimately winning the match in five sets. It was truly amazing! So what can you and I get from this Houdini-like performance? In this episode, I'll tell you about what I saw and learned from this match. So keep listening! GET THE SHOW NOTES: Hi, it's Kim! I'm sure you've heard it said many times - in doubles, the team that controls the net usually wins the point. But why is that? Have you thought about it much? It turns out that there are many reasons for doubles teams to get up to the net and try to take control of the point. In this episode, we'll talk about this "both up at the net" formation and why it is very, very often a great position to get yourself into when playing doubles. GET THE SHOW NOTES: Hi, it's Kim! Hey Tennis Quick Tips listeners! I'm so glad you are here and listening in to this episode. Because this is Part 2 of my two part mini-series called "The Life Lessons I Learned From My Big Tennis Break." Hopefully, you listened to Episode 175 already because that was Part 1 and in that episode I explained just how I was able to achieve complete and total tennis burnout back in the summer of 2017, right before my big two year break from tennis. In this episode, I'm going to let you know how I got over my tennis burnout and how I came to love tennis again. So much so that I returned not just to playing tennis, but to talking about and writing about tennis, and to recording this podcast right here, Tennis Quick Tips. I'll also tell you what I learned about myself and how I continue to work on improving myself and living a better life. Because I have learned some pretty big lessons over the past year that I think are helping me to become a calmer, kinder, happier person, not just in my tennis life but in my life. And I hope when you hear my story, you'll hear something that makes you think about yourself and your own game. I hope you'll hear something that will make you love tennis and want to continue playing and improving your game. And if you also hear something that becomes a life lesson for you, that's even better! So, if you haven't already listened to the previous episode, Episode 175 , I highly recommend you do so before you listen in to this episode. Because this one will make a lot more sense if you've already heard Part 1. And with that recommendation, let's get into Part 2 and talk about the big life lessons I learned from my big tennis break. Well, here we are at the end of 2019 and here, at last, is the episode I've been promising. If you've been listening to this podcast in the last few months, you've heard me say that I was going to explain where I was and what I was doing in the two years that went by between Tennis Quick Tips Episode 164 and Episode 165. That's a pretty big gap and a lot happened during that time, not just in my tennis life, but in my life life. I learned a lot about myself during that time and I also found out just how big of an impact tennis has in my life. So today, I'm going to talk about what happened during that two year gap and I'm ultimately going to tell you about what I learned about myself and about tennis. I'm going to tell you just how I came to love tennis again. Because it wasn't simple or easy to do. And I wasn't loving tennis at one time. And I'm going to tell you the big life lessons I learned that I am trying to apply to my tennis game now. GET THE SHOW NOTES: Hi, it's Kim! Thanks for listening! I have talked a lot in this podcast about talking on court - when you can do it, what you can say, what you can't say, and even what you should say. I've talked about what you should talk about with your partner and what you should and shouldn't say to your opponent. But I have never really talked about what you should NOT say to your partner. In this episode, I'll answer a listener question and make some recommendations on what you should NOT say to your doubles partner and how exactly to handle the moment when that communication comes up. There are lots and lots of tennis "one-liners" - little bits of tennis advice that are summarized in just one sentence. And a lot of times, they're actually great! They can be simple to understand and easy to apply. So how often have you heard this one? "Take the ball on the rise." Your tennis pro may have said that to you. Or maybe you've heard a commentator talking about a pro doing it during one of the Slams. And maybe you're already doing that - taking the ball on the raise. But maybe you're not. Maybe you've heard that one-liner and wondered - what the heck does that even mean, take the ball on the rise? And how do I do that? And why would I even do that? In this episode, we're talking about taking the ball on the rise and why you should try it out the next time you hit the tennis court. GET THE SHOW NOTES: Hi, it's Kim! Thanks for listening! I know what you're saying. Another rules episode? But this episode is important. Really important. Especially if you think the rules of tennis are boring and you don't carry a copy of them with you and you assume someone else will tell you the appropriate rule when the situation comes up. I want to make clear in this episode that, if that's you, you're giving away points! So let's get into it, the rules of tennis and why they are so, so important to know. So what are we talking about today? Today we are going to really get into sunscreen. So let's talk about sunscreen - what it can do for us, what kind to use, how much to use, how often to use it and what is the best sunscreen to use when you're playing tennis and need something you can quickly apply without making a huge mess. And you may be practicing hitting with proper technique not only to get better results, but also to keep injuries at bay. But have you made sure that your tennis gear is also helping you stay fit and healthy out on court? Specifically, is your tennis racquet, probably your most important piece of equipment, helping you to play better tennis or could it actually be hurting you? We've all faced them on court - sore losers who have a list of excuses for why they aren't playing well. And gloaty winners who revel in beating us and highlighting our unforced errors and poor play. The problem with these players is that their actions seem to detract from our level of play. Sore losers seem to be telling us that it's not that we beat them with our superior tennis skills. Rather they lost because they were just having a bad day. And gloaty winners seem to be telling us that we just aren't up to their level as tennis players. So how do we deal with these sore losers and gloaty winners? In this episode of Tennis Quick Tips, I'll tell you just how I go about handling these players in my matches. When trying to perfect our tennis game, I know we all spend a lot of time hitting a lot of balls. But it's not all about your grip, or your swing path, or your follow-through. No, it turns out that what you're doing with your feet also has a big impact on how well you hit the ball. So in this episode, we're talking about the split step. Specifically, what the timing of your split step should be to help you hit the best strokes possible. I have done a lot of episodes about communicating out on court, all about what to talk about, what the benefits are and how to do it so you don't violate the rules. And if you've listened to all of those, you know I am a big advocate of communicating with your partner out on court. However, there are times when you come up against someone, usually an opponent, who just talks too much on court. And that can be very distracting. So in this episode, I'll give you my best tips for handling the player who talks too much on court. And I'll give you a bonus tip for dealing with your chatty partner when it is bothering you. Even though it's fall and we should be playing tennis in wonderful weather, it is still incredibly hot. I have heard of at least two matches being forfeited because one of the players was throwing up during the match! That is an early sign of heat-related illness and no one should be playing when they feel like that. In this episode, I'm going to tell you what the rules of tennis provide for us as far as breaks we can take during a match, little pauses that give us some recovery time. You need to now what these are and be sure you're taking full advantage of them. GET THE SHOW NOTES: Hi, it's Kim! Thanks for listening! Endurance on the tennis court is a big deal. Especially since we never know when we walk out on court just how long a match will go. Maybe it's a quick two setter that you win 6-0, 6-0. But, often times, it turns out to be a a grueling three setter that you are only able to win after three long, drawn-out tiebreak sets. You just never know. So this week, we're talking about fitness and endurance and how you can become a fitter tennis player who is able to make it through all of your matches, even those intense three setters. It's time for another of my Simple Serve Tips! This week, I'll tell you why it is so important to be relaxed during your serve. I've been playing singles this summer and I truly love it! Sure, I may not win much. Or at all. But singles does so much to improve my game that I think it's worth it. And I think you should be playing singles too. In this episode of Tennis Quick Tips, I'll give you five really great reasons to play tennis singles - reasons that I hope will inspire you to get out there on the court and play all by yourself! This week we're talking about mental toughness. Just what are the psychological traits of mentally tough tennis players? Tennis is not just physically demanding, you have got to be tough out there on court. But what does that mean? What is mental toughness for tennis? Because if we don't know what it is, how can we work towards achieving it? In this episode, I'm talking about a study I recently read that not only gave a definition of mental toughness for tennis that we can all use, but discussed some of the psychological traits we need to become and stay tough out on court. I just played for fun with a player who went on and on about how she didn't want to play with lower level players because it didn't benefit her. I mean she really went ON and ON about this. Frankly, I think this attitude is wrong. i think there are plenty of benefits to playing with lower level players. If you're not playing with players because they're beneath you or don't challenge you, I hope this podcast will convince you that there are benefits to your game that you can get from playing with these players. In doubles, it can get confusing knowing exactly when and how you should switch sides during a point. And this confusion is bad because it can result in leaving huge areas of the court open into which your opponents can easily hit a shot and win the point. So in this episode of Tennis Quick Tips, I'll give you 5 super simple tips to help you know how and when to switch sides during a doubles point. And I'll give you some bonus information on how to get your partner on board with this even if you're playing with a new partner or someone with a reputation for not moving much on court. How did Novak Djokovic transform himself from a pretty good tennis player into one of the greatest tennis players ever? According to him, a large part of his success is attributable to the diet and lifestyle changes he made in 2010. He eats gluten-free, believes in stretching, yoga and foam rolling, and lives in a mindful way. Sounds like something we can all do, right? In this episode of Tennis Quick Tips, I'll tell you why I think Serve to Win is such a good book and how it might help you to become a better tennis player. GET THE SHOW NOTES: Hi, it's Kim! You may have heard that tennis is 50% physical and 50% mental. For me, it's more like 75% mental. That's because tennis is not just physically demanding, it is one of the most mentally challenging sports out there. While many of our performance problems can be due to poor physical conditioning, inadequate coaching or just a lack of ability, a lot of mental factors can also have a huge impact on how well, or how poorly, we play. One of these is not having the right mindset during play. There are different mindsets you need to have for practice and for matches. In this episode, I tell you what these two mindsets are and how you can apply them to play better, more winning, tennis.

In this episode, we're talking about rules violationsand how you need to be as up-to-date as possible on your tennisrules and regulations. It’s time for another episode in the Simple Serve Tips series! In this series, we’re getting up close and personal with the tennis serve. We all know that there are so many moving parts to the serve and it can be hard to get a handle on all of them. So, in this series, we’re looking at the entire serve picture – every little bit of it and how each piece can be improved upon to make your serve a better, more reliable tool in your game. So far in this series, we've talked about where you should stand when you serve , how and why to use the continental grip on your serve , what service stance to use , what the qualities of a good serve really are , and how to hold the tennis ball when you toss . Today, we're focusing on the toss again. Specifically, we're going to talk about where to place your toss. You may just be tossing to the same spot over and over. But in this episode, you'll learn how placing your toss in different spots can really help you hit a better serve. GET THE SHOW NOTES: Hi, it's Kim! Thanks for listening! Does it drive you crazy to see your doubles opponents strategizing between points? It drives me crazy. Even if I’m 99% sure that they’re talking about where to go for lunch after the match, I’m not 100% sure so I can’t help but wonder. Are they changing tactics? Have they spotted some weakness? Is one player telling the other to go down the line because I’ve let one too many of those shots go by? If my opponents start talking to each other, I can think of all kinds of things they MIGHT be talking about. It doesn’t matter whether I’m right or not – just thinking about it is enough to unnerve me. And if I’m thinking about them, I’m probably not thinking about my partner and what we should be doing to win the next point or the game or the match. So how do you deal with these chatty, strategizing opponents? The answer is – you don’t. Because they’re only doing what’s right. When playing doubles, YOU should be a chatty, strategizing opponent. You should be communicating with your partner after virtually every point. That’s what the pros do. In fact, Venus Williams says its “clueless” not to be talking that often. So that’s what you should do too. Even if you’re not a brilliant tennis tactician, there are plenty of things you can be talking about to your partner between points. In this episode of Tennis Quick Tips, I'll give you a great list of things to discuss with your partner so that you can become the chatty, strategizing opponent everyone dreads. Have you ever had an opponent aim a return right at you when you're up at the net? Most of the time, when recreational or club level players are in a match and the net player gets drilled by a return, I think it's probably not intentional. It's more of an attempt at a down-the-line return gone wrong. But what if your opponent is really trying to hit you with that return? In this episode of Tennis Quick Tips, I'll answer a listener's question about this and give some really great options for dealing with this kind of return. GET THE SHOW NOTES: Hi, it's Kim! Every year, at the beginning of the new year, I set a few tennis goals for myself - goals that I hope will improve my game and that I want to accomplish in the coming year. I've done this since 2009 and the results have been pretty inconsistent. Some years, I achieve one, maybe even two of my goals. Some years, nothing seems to happen. In this episode of tennis Quick Tips, I'm going to talk about setting tennis goals again and I'm going to give you the tips I'll be applying in 2016 to hopefully do a better job of achieving my goals. Believe it or not, there are some tennis players that no one wants to partner with! They are not bad players. In fact, they may be pretty darn good. They make their shots. They win more than they lose. But, for a variety of reasons, these players just take all of the fun out of playing tennis. And if you play doubles with any regularity, especially if you play for a team, you might just find yourself partnered with one of these "bad" tennis partners. So how do you deal with these players? How do you play when your partner seems to be the worst tennis partner ever? That's what we're talking about in this episode of Tennis Quick Tips. I broke a string in my tennis racket recently. This is a pretty common occurrence with tennis players, especially if you don't have your racket restrung when it's time. But this incident reminded me of the time I broke a string during a match which led to me looking into the rules on string breaking and other equipment malfunctions. So in this episode of Tennis Quick Tips, we'll answer the question about just what you do when you break a racket string. GET THE SHOW NOTES: Hi, it's Kim! Thanks for listening! Welcome to my Simple Serve Tips series! In this series, we're getting up close and personal with the tennis serve. We all know that there are so many moving parts to the serve and it can be hard to get a handle on all of them. So, in this series, we're going to looking at the entire serve picture - every little bit of it and how each piece can be improved upon to make your serve a better, more reliable tool in your game. In this second episode, we're talking about how to hold the racket when you serve. Specifically, I'm going to tell you exactly what type of grip you should use when you serve. How do you hold your racket when you serve? Are you using on Eastern forehand grip? A Continental grip? Do you not even know or care what grip you're using? Definitely, when you first start playing tennis, the grip you use on your serve is the grip that gets the ball in. Since the purpose of the serve is to get the point going, you initially need to make sure that you have a serve that goes in the service box consistently. Because if you can't get your serve in, things like power and spin are pretty irrelevant. But once you do develop a pretty consistent serve, adding more power and spin to that serve is definitely worth working on. And a great way to add power and spin to your serve is to use the Continental grip. In fact, for the vast majority of tennis players, the best grip for serving is the Continental grip. In this episode you'll find out exactly why and how to use this grip. GET THE SHOW NOTES: Hi, it's Kim! Thanks for listening! This is the first episode in my brand new series, Simple Serve Tips. There are so many moving parts to the serve and it can be hard to get a handle on all of them. So, in this series, we're going to look at the entire serve picture - every little bit of it and how each piece can be improved upon to make your serve a better, more reliable tool in your game. Maybe you're happy with your serve. Maybe you think your serve is perfect and needs no adjusting or tweaking. But even at the pro level, we see players constantly working to improve their serve. So I encourage you to listen in no matter what the quality of your serve because sometimes just re-thinking what you're doing when you're serving can have a huge impact on the quality of your serve. In this first episode in the Simple Serve Tips series, I talk about where you should stand when you hit your serve and how you can take best advantage of your serving position on the baseline. I recently started teaching adult beginner tennis. I really don't consider myself a tennis pro, however, because I'm teaching ladies who have never played the game before and I'm teaching them the most basic aspects of tennis. I was thinking about these beginner tennis players when I was looking through my tennis books (as I do) and was wondering what book would I have liked to have read when I was starting to play the game. And that book is, without a doubt, Tennis Beyond Big Shots: The New Power Game by Greg Moran, and that's the book I'm reviewing for you today. GET THE SHOW NOTES: Hi, it's Kim! Thanks for listening! What is up with people and the crazy things they do before they serve? Some of the antics we see on court these days seem less about serve preparation and more about playing mind games. When you think about the mechanics of your strokes in tennis, you may spend a lot of time thinking about your grip, your racquet position, your contact point, even your footwork. But most of us don't spend much time thinking about our follow through. And I think that's because the follow through is what happens after we've already hit the ball. Failure to think about or care about the follow through is a really common error among beginners. But it can also affect advanced players. So let's talk about the follow through - what it is and why it's so important. GET THE SHOW NOTES: Hi, it's Kim! Thanks for listening! It's time for another tennis rules episode (hooray!). This week, I'm answering the question of a Tennis Fixation follower who asks about where doubles partners can stand when returning the ball. This is a pretty interesting episode as it turns out the answer is not just about what the rules allow, but also what the best court positioning may be for the returning doubles team. Have you ever played against someone who wants to win the warm-up? They angle their volleys off for winners. They smash their overheads back at you, or maybe back at your partner who is not even paying attention to your opponent. Some people play the warm-up as if its some kind of mini-match that they need to win before the real match even begins. In this episode of Tennis Quick Tips, I'll talk about how to really "win" the warm-up, how to make the most of those 5 to 10 minutes before the match begins to get yourself physically and mentally ready to play. I don't know about you, but I have played numerous matches where, at some point, the players can't figure out what the score is. Or who's turn it is to serve. Or even what just happened. This is especially true in a doubles match where four players may come up with four different versions of what's happening on court. So what do you do in this situation? Continue playing with the error, even though you know it's wrong? Start all over again? In this episode of Tennis Quick Tips, I'll tell you how to deal with errors in your tennis matches. If the serve is the most important stroke in tennis, then the toss may be the most important part of the toss. But a lot of players struggle with getting their toss just right. In this episode, I talk about the need to keep your tossing arm up as long as possible. This will help you avoid pulling off to one side when you're serving and will help to move your momentum into the serve. I also tell you how you can practice your toss anywhere, including at home. If only we all had a chance to sit down with the greatest tennis players of all time to ask them just how they do what it is they do. How do they play such incredible tennis? Imagine Pete Sampras telling you how to get a great second serve. Or Andy Murray revealing how to hit a drop shot. Or doubles great Max Mirnyi explaining just how to hit someone at the net and not live to regret it. In his book, Game, Set and Match: Secret Weapons of the Worlds Top Tennis Players, tennis journalist Mark Hodgkinson gives us all of these "secrets" and a whole lot more. Has your tennis team resorted to "stacking" the lines? Also known as dropping the lines or flipping the lines. If you have, then you know it can be a controversial topic for any captain and can lead to sometimes disastrous consequences. In this episode, I'm interviewing one of my own team captains and someone who has served in that capacity for many years as well as working on the boards for a variety of tennis leagues. Her name is Mary Baird and yes, she has stacked the lines. But she's been able to do it in a positive way that not only keeps the team from disintegrating but actually produces results. Do you have a "Plan B" for every tennis match you play? If not, you need to get one and soon. Are you using the split step in your tennis play? Many players think the split step is unnecessary. Or not worth making the effort to use. A lot of us aren't even sure what the split step is. I used to be a player like that but, when I was ready to take my tennis up a notch, especially at the net, I realized I had to make the split step part of my game. PLEASE NOTE THAT MY COMMENTS IN THIS EPISODE ARE REGARDING UNOFFICIATED MATCHES. IN OFFICIATED MATCHES AND TOURNAMENTS, THE RULES AND REGULATIONS REGARDING LATENESS AND DEFAULTS APPLY. In this week’s episode, we’re going to talk about something that … the bottom line is, it’s a matter of tennis etiquette, and I don’t think tennis etiquette is something that we hear too much about. We recreational players out there, whether we’re playing for fun or playing as part of a league, playing a tournament, we know that tennis etiquette is often just as important and impactful of what happens on the court as the rules. So in this episode, I’m going to talk a little about the rules and a lot about the etiquette of forfeiting a tennis match. GET THE SHOW NOTES: Hi, it's Kim! Thanks for listening! You never disagree on what your tactics should be or who should have got that ball down the middle. And you never, ever disagree on calls. What? That's not how your tennis partnership works? Well, frankly, I doubt if anyone's partnership works that well. So, what do you do when you and your partner disagree on a call? What if one partner calls a serve in and the other calls it out? Is it a let? Do you just replay the point? Is there any kind of rule on this? I bet it's no surprise to hear that not only is there a rule, but I know about it because I've been in this situation. In this episode, I'll address a recent comment from "Anne" about this difficult situation. I'll tell you what the tennis rules have to say about this and, hopefully, how you can avoid "doubles purgatory" when you get into a disagreement on calls with your partner. Why aren't you poaching more? You know you should be and yet, you're so afraid that you'll get caught with a down-the-line return from your opponent that you keep standing there, flat-footed at the net and you never take a chance on poaching. But have you tried fake poaching? Fake poaching might be your ticket to poaching success. In this episode, I'll explain what fake poaching is and why you should give it a try in your next match. Just this week, I was reminded not once, not twice, not three times, but FOUR times how important it is to be patient when playing tennis. I tend to be a very impatient player, wanting to quickly rush the net and end the point. Unfortunately, this often results in me making tons or errors and giving points and games away to my opponents. So, because I'm playing a singles tournament this weekend and patience is EXTREMELY important in singles, I am working very hard to become a more patient tennis player. The way to do this, I believe, is to (1) realize when you're being impatient, and (2) remind yourself to practice patience on court. The easiest way to recognize that when you're impatient is usually during your serve. If you're rushing through your serve and don't have a plan, meaning you having thought out where you should place your serve and why, then you're probably being impatient. A good way to address this is by adopting a service ritual that you use on every single serve. I talked about this in Episode 4 of Tennis Quick Tips, called Improve Your Tennis Serve Consistency with a Service Ritual . I'll link to that below. To help yourself practice patience, rituals are great but so are little reminders. To remind myself to be patient in my tournament, I've put a little sticker on the inside of the throat of my racquet that says "Patience." That's all it says but that's all of the reminder that I need to tell myself to slow down, have a plan, reduce my errors and wait for my opportunity to hit a winner. Patience - it's an important skill on the tennis court and one that we can develop if we just realize we need it and remind ourselves to practice it. Where's the best place to put the ball in doubles? If you're anything like me, you want to be up at the net, hitting a severe sharp angle off the court that not only can your opponents not return, but everyone claps when the point is over and tells you how incredible your shot was. That is usually called going for the low-percentage shot and that is the kind of tennis I find myself constantly trying to play. It has taken me a long time and a lot of lost points to accept that the beautiful severe angle shot is not always the smart shot when I'm playing doubles. Often, just putting the ball right back down the middle, between my opponents, is the smartest and easiest way to win the point. Why is this true? Why do we need to keep reminding ourselves in our doubles matches that "down the middle solves the riddle"? In this episode, I'll give you four good reasons why. It's time for a tennis quick tip on the serve! While the serve may be the most important stroke in tennis, I believe the toss is the most important part of the serve. And that's why you need to always hit a good serve. Too often, we get lazy or impatient and just hit any old toss. Instead, we need to learn to be patient and wait for that perfect toss before hitting our serve. Your flexibility is an important part of your tennis game. But as important as maintaining and even increasing your flexibility is, most of us neglect doing the stretching work that can really help our game. Instead, we like to focus on fine-tuning our strokes, building up our strength, or working on our mental game. Flexibility takes a back seat to almost everything else we do to become better tennis players. Well, that's about to change. In this episode of Tennis Quick Tips, I'll give you some quick and simple stretching exercises that you can do to help maintain and even improve your flexibility. Plus, I'll provide you with a free downloadable pdf guide with a complete stretching routine, including photos and descriptions, that you can quickly and easily perform. If you become the least bit interested in tennis, you'll soon come across Arthur Ashe. If you watch any of the U.S. Open each year, you hear his name repeatedly since the main stadium for the U.S. Open is (you guessed it) Arthur Ashe Stadium. You may know that Arthur Ashe died in 1993 at the age of 49 from AIDS-related complications. He had an illustrious tennis career, winning 3 Grand Slam titles - the 1968 U.S. Open, the 1970 Australian Open, and Wimbledon in 1975. And he did more to break down the race barriers in professional tennis than any player of his time. It wasn't too long after I took up tennis that I picked up Arthur Ashe's book, Arthur Ashe On Tennis: Strokes, Strategy, Traditions, Players, Psychology, and Wisdom. His book was published in 1995, after his death. So Ashe was not around to see all of the changes we see on the pro circuit today - powerful racquets, indestructible strings, open-stance strokes, exaggerated grips. But you and I aren't playing on the pro circuit (at least I don't think we are), so a lot of the points he makes in his book are still valid for recreational players like us, out to have fun and play some competitive tennis. His book is wonderful and so easy to read. In it, he gives lots and lots of bullet-point tips on strokes and strategy. For a complete review of this book, including a few of Ashe's great pointers, check out the show notes to this episode: http://tennisfixation.com/quicktips64 And give your opinion on how to make Tennis Fixation an even better resource for you in the coming year. Here in Houston, it's cold. And by cold, I mean we're often having to play tennis in temperatures that are below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. I know for many of you, temperatures like that sound pleasant if not downright balmy. But look, people like me live in Houston for a reason and that reason is that we hate cold weather. So, to us, what is balmy for Maine is absolutely freeezzzzing. However you feel about what truly qualifies as cold weather, there's one thing we can all agree on - playing tennis when it's cold is a lot different than playing tennis when it's warm. So in this episode, we're talking about how you can change your game to play even better tennis in the cold weather. A typical tennis match requires you to move all over the tennis court in an incredibly diverse number of ways. You don't just run around the court, You sprint, reach, stretch, lunge, bend, leap, quickly change direction, and explosively start and stop. You charge forward to the net. You quickly back up when you get lobbed. You run back and forth, diagonally, and every once in a while you jump up in hopes of stopping a lob. In this episode, we'll talk about on-court movement and how you can improve your tennis footwork to make sure you're playing as well as you possibly can. I just played a doubles match where one of my opponents stood in the doubles alley (behind the baseline of course) when hitting her serve. She did this on both sides of the court, throughout the match and was really good at placing her serve all over the service box. Since this is such an exaggerated and unusual place to stand, I wanted to be sure and let you know what the rules have to say on this particular stance. In this episode, we'll look at ITF Rules 17 and 18 which give you the answer. You can find the show notes for this episode by going to: http://tennisfixation.com/quicktips60

While you're not allowed to have on-court coaching during your tennis matches, the USTA's Rules of Tennis do allow you to look at notes on court. But can you look at notes on court in the middle of a game or between points? Can you put your notes in your pocket and then pull them out to review right before you serve? What's the rule on this and what's the best way to make use of notes on the tennis court? In this episode, I'll answer a listener question raising this issue, I'll go into what I think the rules of tennis have to say, and I'll give you a great way to remind yourself of the one, most important thing you need to remember in every tennis match you play, on every point.
