In the final episode of Got Somme for 2025, Angus O’Loughlin and Master Sommelier Carlos Santos reflect on the year that was through the wines that defined it. Rather than revisiting bottles already featured on the podcast, Carlos reveals a personal Wine of the Year driven by memory, place and emotion. A Champagne enjoyed on a beach at sunset, oysters and lobster on hand, and a moment that perfectly captured why wine is never just about what is in the glass. Angus counters with his own standout wine of the year, an Australian Semillon that completely exceeded expectations and cut through a line-up of elite wines to steal the show. Along the way, they dive deep into Champagne ageing, Blanc de Blancs versus Brut styles, the importance of time on lees, the underrated ageing power of Australian Semillon, and why context and connection matter more than price tags. The episode also marks the end of an enormous year for Got Somme, celebrating huge audience growth and setting the stage for what is coming in 2026. In this episode of Got Somme , Angus O’Loughlin and Master Sommelier Carlos Santos take you into one of Italy’s most iconic wine rivalries: Barolo vs Barbaresco . We break down everything from grape variety , regional differences , aging laws , price , aromas , palate structure , and why—despite their similarities—one of these wines consistently demands 30 to 40 percent more at retail. And yes… we revisit the infamous first attempt at this episode, where a $500 bottle of Barolo turned out to be faulty . Cork taint. Wet cardboard. Pain. Watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAmb5p34Q-I&t=20s If you’ve ever wondered: – Why is Barolo more expensive? – Can you actually tell them apart in a blind tasting? – What aromas define Nebbiolo? – Which wine should YOU be buying? …this is your episode. Watch Carlos Blind Taste this Barolo before we recorded the episode here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31Sawb7Elp4&t=5s SPONSORS Grays.com Where we sourced today’s beautifully aged bottles → Buy well-stored, premium wine (and avoid the faulty disasters we once had) https://www.grays.com/search/wine RIEDEL We are tasting from the RIEDEL Performance Pinot Noir glasses—perfect for Nebbiolo’s aromatics. https://www.riedel.com/en-au/shop#sort=bestSeller (Australians use code: GOTSOMME New Zealand: GOTSOMMENZ at check out for 20% off) KEY MOMENTS & TAKEAWAYS 1. Barolo vs Barbaresco: What’s the Actual Difference? Both wines are made from Nebbiolo , grown in Piedmont, but come from different sub-regions: Barolo : Southwest of Alba, slightly cooler, higher altitude Barbaresco : Northeast of Alba, warmer, more perfumed Even though the geographical distance is small, the microclimate differences lead to two very different personalities in the glass. 2. Aging Laws That Drive the Price Barolo DOCG 38 months aging (At least 18 months in oak) Reserva: 62 months aging minimum (at least 18 months in oak) Barbaresco DOCG 26 months aging (9 months in oak) Reserva: 50 months aging (9 months in oak) Holding wine for 3–5 years before it earns $1 dramatically affects price—and explains why Barolo is typically more expensive. 3. Appearance: What Nebbiolo Looks Like Both wines show the classic: Brick/rust rim Light colour intensity Transparent core But today, the Barbaresco is noticeably lighter at the rim than the Barolo—something even Carlos says isn’t always the case. 4. Nose: The Aroma Clues Barbaresco More perfumed More lifted red fruits Floral (rose, dried flowers) Slightly softer aromas Barolo More rustic and powerful Leather Tar and asphalt Tobacco Darker, deeper aromatics Carlos also explains why Nebbiolo often shows “tar”—a hallmark of the grape and winemaking style. 5. Palate: Similar DNA, Different Personalities Both wines show: High tannin High acidity Elevated alcohol Intense structure But the Barbaresco presents as more elegant and delicate , while the Barolo pushes toward intensity, rustic tannin, and power . As Angus puts it: “They’re identical twins wearing different outfits.” FOLLOW GOT SOMME Instagram and TikTok: @GotSomme Studio bookings: SessionInProgress.com.au This podcast proudly presented by Grays.com: https://www.grays.com/search/wine-and-more?tab=items See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of Got Somme, we journey through the rolling hills of Napa Valley to explore the world of Diamond Creek wines. Your hosts Angus and Carlos uncork the history and flavour profile of aged Cabernet Sauvignon, sip through the 1995 and 1996 vintages, and dissect how Napa’s unique terroir stacks up against global giants like Bordeaux and Margaret River. From wine economics to the Paris Judgment of 1976, this one’s a full-bodied conversation about what makes Napa, and California more broadly, central to wine education and the sommelier world. Napa’s American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) offer an incredible diversity of terrain and taste. Aged wines can become difficult to distinguish, often looking and tasting remarkably similar. Napa's terroir—mountains, valleys, and microclimates—shapes its wine characteristics in distinct ways. When compared to regions like Bordeaux and Margaret River, Napa Cabernet reveals unique stylistic differences. The Judgment of Paris (1976) proved California wines could rival—and surpass—France. High land and production costs drive Napa’s premium wine pricing, creating a gap in mid-range offerings compared to countries like Australia. California is pivotal in the global wine education space and sommelier training. Ever found yourself in a bottle shop or staring at a wine list, desperately searching for a dry Rosé? But how do you know which one to pick? Maybe you’ve opted for a French label, convinced by a friend’s mum that it's dry? Perhaps you assume that the darker pink Rosés must be sweet? It’s time to bring in a Master Sommelier to guide us through buying and enjoying the perfect Rosé. In this episode, 25-year-old Amelia represents a large group of Rosé enthusiasts who feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of options. She shares her personal experiences and preferences when choosing a bottle, and we discuss how marketing and labelling play a big part in those decisions. Master Somm Carlos Santos, alongside host Angus O'Loughlin, dives into the nuances of Rosé, exploring everything from colour and flavour to alcohol content and regional differences. Carlos offers expert tips on picking the right Rosé, whether you're enjoying it on a warm summer’s day or pairing it with food. 🔖 Rosé, wine tasting, wine preferences, marketing, alcohol content, flavour profiles, wine regions, summer drinks, wine selection Key Takeaways: Marketing and bottle design play a major role in wine choices. The colour of Rosé doesn’t always correlate with its sweetness. Alcohol content is a good indicator of Rosé’s sweetness level. Lighter Rosés are typically seen as fresher and more suited to summer drinking. French Rosés are often the most popular choice among consumers. You WON'T believe what we paid for this bottle! Master Sommelier Carlos Santos discusses Bordeaux wines, specifically the first five growth wines, while tasting a bottle of 1988 La Mission Haut-Brion and talking about its history and classification. They also touch on the concept of super second growth wines and second wines of famous Château's. Do we dare compare Bordeaux wines to Australian wines? Discuss the importance of their individual terroir. Plus they reveal the pricing of the 1989 La Mission Haut-Brion and the great deal they got at auction. 🔖 Bordeaux wines, first growth, super second growth, second wines, terroir, pricing Takeaways First growth wines in Bordeaux are highly prestigious and include five top Château's. Super second growth wines are highly regarded and often outperform some first growths. Second wines of a chateau are made from lesser quality grapes and are more affordable. Terroir plays a significant role in the quality and characteristics of Bordeaux wines. Auction can be a great way to find good deals on expensive wines. Sound Bites "We are drinking Bordeaux wines, baby." "What are the first five growths?" "Definitely gone into the tertiary flavours, but still a little bit of fruit hanging on in there." Does '100 Points' mean a wine is "Perfect" and if so does that mean we are comparing that bottle against the worlds best? After seeing one of Australia's best wine writers Erin Larkins review of 2022 The Standish 'Lamella' we knew we had to get our hands on it and see what a Master Sommelier thinks! A little bit about Standish via Goodwood Cellars: A 6th generation Barossan, Dan Standish established his eponymous winery in 1999 whilst still working as winemaker at Torbreck Vintners. His endeavour initially began around an ancient parcel of Shiraz owned and farmed by his father. All batches of fruit are fermented and matured individually then follows a strict selection in the winery that can see as much as 80% of the original blend discarded and sold off in bulk. As with the finest producers in Europe only the finest material is sold under the Standish Wine Company label. Stylistically Dan's wines are as rich and profound as you would expect from Barossa Valley old vines but they have a satin texture and dreamy perfume that sets them far apart from his contemporaries. Here, dark fruits are encased in cocoa and earthy richness but with gentle spice, soil tone, asphalt and a stony minerality that gives the wines a beautiful dimension. These are special Australian wines! We've all heard about following in your father's footsteps but for Sam Middleton of Mount Mary Vineyard we wanted to know if expectation meant invitation "There was probably never any doubt that I would end up doing what I'm doing now, wine was always a big part of my life" Taking our conversation on the Journey through working at Gevrey-Chambertin and cutting his teeth at Coldstream Hills and Dominique Portet before returning to his families estate as Chief Winemaker "Once you're back you're very unlikely to leave, you wanna try and get as many different experiences as possible" Imposter Syndrome, stamping his mark on the label and the next generation of winemakers are all discussed while everyone enjoys a stunning 2015 Mount Mary Triolet. "It was a fantastic Yarra vintage, probably one of the best I've been involved in" 2021 Mount Mary Chardonnay "Great acid, great focus, great freshness, great drive but still have flavour and concentration and personality" If you can enjoy a glass of MM alongside listening or watching this episode. Embarking his 20th vintage in Yarra Valley Toolangi winemaker Kaspar Hermann knows a thing or two about getting the best from a Chardonnay grape. Marrying into a wine making family, and taking a viticulture course himself in his teens, wine is where he was destined to be and after vintages with Seville Estate, Rochford and Mount Mary, Toolangi came calling. Taking over the reigns from legendary winemakers Rick Kinzbrunner, Franco D'Anna, David Bicknell and Willy Lunn his first vintage in 2019 was made somewhat easier by starting during the harvest and the pressure of making calls about the canopy and crop being delayed until 2020. Chardonnay can be a divisive wine when really it shouldn't! If you don't like Chardonnay chances are you probably just don't like over oaked Chardonnay. The grape variety itself is actually neutral and if you were to taste a Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Chardonnay next to a William Fevre Petit Chablis you would be mistaken for thinking they are two completely different grape varietals. The difference? Oak One with plenty and one without any! In this episode of Got Somme, Yarra Valley local Brenden Robnik aka 'The Wine Animal' joins us in studio to deep dive his favourite Australian wine region while also looking at the complex differences altitude can make on Chardonnay separated only by a few kilometres. Disagree that the Yarra Valley is the best wine region in Victoria? Late last year Got Somme host Angus O'Loughlin was asked via our Instagram "What bottle would you cellar for ten years" He held up a 2021 Demi Shiraz that he was drinking in that moment. That led to a phone call to Syrahmi owner Adam Foster who was inspecting the vines and they confirmed his studio attendance as first winemaker on the podcast in 2024! Bottles brought into studio: 2022 Demi Shiraz 2017 Lala 2018 LaLa 2022 Syrahmi 'Angus' 2004 Syrahmi (first ever vintage) A bit of Syrahmi: The name Syrahmi is a made up from “Syrah” the French word for Shiraz and “Ami” meaning friend. The idea being a “friendly Shiraz” or “A friend of Shiraz”. Syrahmi began in 2004 when Adam Foster gave up his day job as a Chef to pursue his dream of becoming a wine maker. He purchased his first tonne and a half of grapes from Heathcote winery and the dream was born. Each year grapes for Syrahmi are sourced and selected from different vineyards in the Heathcote region. Thus each year the wines are given a different name to reflect the vintage. The text message from Carlos read: "Oh mate... if we can get Olivier it will be HUGE!" The schedule was tight, 20 minutes only, to quiz the sixth generation of the founding family of Krug and it's current Director Olivier Krug. Carlos reminisces on his first experience in France at the vineyard, the incredible bottle of wine he was lucky enough to taste and how each glass should taste like a symphony of flavours. Truly one of our favourite moments this year is Olivier describing how each Cuvee is created and how the "ego's" of some vintages need to be managed. Imagine being gifted a wine and not realising it's value - they make less than 300 bottles each year! Hiding in Angus' cellar at home was this bottle of wine and YOU could win it. After discovering the gem in his collection while speaking with Yarra Yering winemaker Sarah Crowe the boys decide to deep dive the world of 'Carrodus' Wines bringing this Masterclass on a true Yarra Yering icon. This wine isn't made any year. It's created out of a small, historic parcel of vines on the Yarra Yering site. It's only made in exceptional conditions and only when the grapes aren't required for the No1 or No2 wines. Also listen out for the vintage Sarah describes as "The Goat" and then keep your eyes out for it on auction, bottle shops or wine lists. $120 down the drain! "Corked" wine does not mean a wine with small pieces of cork floating around in the glass. It is a word for a wine that has become contaminated with cork taint. In the worst instances, the wine tastes of nothing but mould – which should be obvious. BUT what if it isn't? How do you identify when a bottle of wine has gone bad? We are here to educate and alleviate that fear as we accidently experience first hand what a corked wine smells and tastes like, demonstrate how it can be easy to distinguish between a regular bottle and the steps you can take when asking for a refund. NEVER in over 60 Episodes has this happened OR SHOULD IT! "Holy S***" Surprising a Master Sommelier with his FAVOURITE wine! 4 different vintages 🤯🍷 Master Sommelier Carlos Santos has been talking about Wendouree Winery in Clare Valley, South Australia on nearly every episode of Got Somme to date. So when we got the chance to surprise him with a flight of 4 different vintages and varietals from the brand he said "NO F***ING WAY". The Wendouree vineyards were established in 1893, and its distinctive, high-quality wines are known to have an indefinite shelf life despite their little production. They have grown to be somewhat of an Australian cult favourite among savvy wine drinkers. The only way to get them when they go on sale is via the mailing list, which is still one of the most difficult to join in Australia. Our FINAL $30 or under bottle of wine has been hand selected by Master Sommelier Carlos Santos. Why this bottle? Carlos wanted to find a similar bottle that could knock the Chateau Haut Madrac, our current #1, off the top of the podium. They're both traditional Bordeaux blends and both influenced by coastal climates. Carlos knowing the Vasse Felix winemaker thought it could topple our old world classic but can it shake up the competition before next weeks 'finale'? We put two Bordeaux Chateau wines up against each other battling out for the BEST BOTTLE UNDER $30 We firstly assess our current #1 wine under $30 the 2017 Chateau Haut Madrac against the just released 2018 vintage and the results surprised us! "I am a FIEND for this wine" Ex-Radio Announcer Angus O'Loughlin insisted that this sweet wine be included in this season of Got Somme after tasting it during his WSET level 2 course. This wine, which Carlos had heard of before EVER visiting Australia, is the literal gold standard for dessert wines and the ideal half bottle to present to our palates. We apologise! This podcast is on a mission to find the best quality bottle of wine UNDER $30 and this week we splurged and spent $35.99 at the time of recording. Why? Master Sommelier Carlos Santos was interested in trying this bottle because it was made by John Duval, one of only four Penfolds chief winemakers, who was also in charge of developing Australia's most well-known export, "Grange." We genuinely hope you don't mind reaching a little further into your pockets this week as we learn about "SGM." Stay tuned for an interesting explanation of why this isn't labeled "GSM." This wine from the moment it hits the palate sends the mouth into overdrive as we learn about how winemakers create high acid wine, why they do it and how it shouldn't be feared. "I would say for Pinot Noir it has a deep intensity! Compared to tasting a Shiraz then no, it's pale, but we are trying a Pinot Noir which is quite deep even in colour" - Carlos Santos MS The first time our podcast has circled back to the same wine varietal - Pinot Noir. A very different style to what we have previously tasted hence why we picked this bottle. Deep red fruit, no freshness, overripe and a jammy nose but with a different effect on the palate.
