In this episode of Relay , host Lindsey Hein introduces the newest member of the Relay team: Erika Kemp. Erika is an accomplished professional distance runner for Brooks, a 2:22 marathoner, and a two-time U.S. champion. She made headlines in her debut marathon at Boston in 2023, running the fastest time ever recorded by an American-born Black woman. Since then, she’s dropped over ten minutes off her PR, running 2:22 at the 2025 Houston Marathon, and most recently earned a spot on Team USA for the World Championships in the marathon. Erika will line up this September alongside Brooks teammates Susanna Sullivan and Jess Tonn, who is replacing Betsy Saina following her pregnancy announcement. In this conversation, Lindsey and Erika catch listeners up on Erika’s recent career milestones, her current training in Rhode Island under coach Kurt Benninger, and what’s ahead. Erika also shares her passion for representation in the sport and her commitment to mentoring young runners. We're thrilled to have Erika joining the Relay podcast as a regular co-host. She’ll be part of the Monday crew, with new episodes dropping every Tuesday. This conversation is your chance to get to know her a little better and hear her perspective heading into an exciting summer. A quick note: the audio quality in this one isn’t perfect due to a technical issue during recording. There’s a bit of crackle in Lindsey’s mic, but the conversation is still worth the listen. Enjoy this introduction to Erika Kemp—Relay’s newest voice on the mic.

Today's show is a fun one that features Lindsey Hein, Tommie Runz, Peter Bromka, and Matt Chittim Topics: The L.A. Marathon - why does it lack the same acclaim as other major marathons, despite its size and community support. Creating a unique race experience and leaning into the difficulty of the course can help elevate a marathon's status. The idea of a marathon doubleheader, like the Super Bowl Shuffle, could generate excitement and attract runners. High school track nationals provide an opportunity for young athletes to showcase their talent and compete at a high level. Eating 25 fried oysters may not be the best idea, even for a shot put champion.

In this conversation, Mario Fraioli discusses his coaching career, what he loves about the profession, how he has grown as a coach, the challenges his athletes face, his communication around those topics, and much more with Stefanie Flippin and Peter Bromka. This is our new take on this format. Instead of addressing specific training and racing topics, we want to know about the philosophies and evolution behind some of the best coaches in our sport. Mario emphasizes the importance of building long-term relationships with athletes and the value of trust and longevity in coaching. He also discusses the significance of taking risks and setting big goals in athletic performance. Mario addresses the challenges of imposter syndrome and the importance of understanding the athlete's context. He also shares his thoughts on enduring vs absorbing training and the impact of social media on athletes' mental health. In this part of the conversation, Mario and Stefanie discuss the impact of social media on athletes and the importance of using it in a healthy way. They also explore how to evaluate new training methods and trends, emphasizing the need for self-awareness and critical thinking. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the creative aspect of coaching and the joy of finding unique training solutions. Takeaways Building long-term relationships with athletes is important for trust and unlocking potential. Taking risks and setting big goals are necessary for athletic success. Understanding the athlete's context and providing support beyond training is crucial. Enduring training without absorbing it can hinder progress. Social media can have both positive and negative impacts on athletes' mental health.

This past Sunday we lost a legend. Kelvin Kiptum, the fastest marathoner of all-time, and his coach Gervais Hakizimana, died in a car crash outside of Eldoret, Kenya. By the age of 24, Kelvin had established himself as one of the best endurance runners in history. His world record setting 2:00:35 performance at the 2023 Chicago Marathon was simultaneously the best marathon performance in history and a foreshadowing of the brilliance to come. In this tribute episode Tommie Runz, Marcus Brown, Peter Bromka, Lindsey Hein, and Matt Chittim discuss Kelvin's historic performances, his legacy, and the ways in which he inspired all of us and will continue to do so for generations.

The Chicago Marathon was a historic event and we could not wait to break it all down. Well, not all of it because there were so many storylines, but we tried to get to as much as we could! In addition to the racing we talked about Kofuzi’s quest to be the 1,000,000th Chicago Marathon finisher. We also did a recap of our inaugural marathon fantasy draft that was won by Peter Bromka. This episode features Kofuzi, Laura Thweatt, Lindsey Hein, Tommie Runz, Peter Bromka, and Matt Chittim

Welcome to the first ever Relay fantasy draft! In this inaugural episode we do a fantasy draft for the this weekend's Chicago Marathon. In this draft each person drafted five runners of any gender or nationality. The entire field was ours to choose from. On race day we will do cross country scoring with the top three runners from each time getting points. 1 point for coming in first, 2 for second, and so on. For example, one team has the top male runner, the top female runner, and the second female runner, it would have 4 points. In this draft we had Tommie Runz, Laura Thweatt, Lindsey Hein, Peter Bromka, and Matt Chittim.

Our monthly Book Club episode is here and it was a great one. Lindsey Hein and Peter Bromka lead a group discussion about Everything All at Once by Steph Catudal. This is beautifully written book that details Steph's turbulent life and how she grappled with her past while sitting bedside while her husband, famed trail and ultra runner Tommy Rivs, endured an 84 day medically induced coma while battling lung cancer. Tommy's battle nearly ended many times and Steph's description of those moments alongside her own memories made for powerful mixture. In this episode Lindsey and Peter explore themes from the book with the help of some of our Relay subscription community. We will be holding our next book club in late September and we'll be discussing Stephen Lane's upcoming book Long Run to Glory: The Story of the Greatest Marathon in Olympic History and the Women Who Made It Happen. We will share a link so listeners can join us in the discussion once we finalize the date of the show.

Today on Group Chat we dive into the hottest topics of the last week (literally and metaphorically). First we do a frame-by-frame breakdown of what may, or may not, have been a flying elbow between Addisu Yihune and Conner Mantz 200 meters from the finish in a battle to win the Beach to Beacon 10k. Click here to see for yourself . Then we revel in the greatness of Keira D'Amato and discuss if she has the title of the best women's road runner. Athing Mu was in the news this week after her coach raised the prospect of her not running in the World Championships. We chat about the potential reasons for that announcement and the surprising heavy load that track athletes have had to carry over the last several years. Finally, we get into a breakdown of the Olympic Marathon Trials start time, it's potential effects on the athletes, and how USATF could have packaged the release to maximize the positives despite the challenging weather situation. This Group Chat episode features Relay contributors Kara Goucher, Laura Thweatt, Stefanie Flippin, Lindsey Hein, Tommie Runz, Peter Bromka, and Matt Chittim.
