Send us a text If you want your child to talk well — not just say more words — this episode will change the way you think about early communication. Because here’s the truth: Talking doesn’t just “show up” one day. It grows from the daily experiences underneath it — connection, play, movement, interaction, modeling, as well as sleep, nutrition, and healthy routines. Whether your baby is 6 months old and you want to stay ahead… or your toddler is already showing signs of delay… understanding what’s happening underneath the words is one of the best gifts you can give your child. You’ve probably heard the common lines: “Boys talk later.” “Late talking runs in families.” “Give it time. She’ll talk when she’s ready.” But in 2025, it’s much more nuanced than that — and simply assuming “it’ll all work out” can keep kids stuck longer than they need to be. After 35 years in early intervention, Erin has seen hundreds of so-called “late talkers,” and here’s what most parents (and many professionals) miss: 👉 Not all late talkers are the same. Some children are on a simple language-delay path. Others are showing early signs of a broader 'communication' difference. Those two paths need different kinds of support. In this episode, Erin helps you “look more closely” and get curious, as she explains in clear, practical terms: what to notice before the first birthday the difference between a language delay and a communication disorder why focusing only on “more words” can miss the real issue how play, sensory needs, emotions, and movement all shape speech subtle signs parents overlook in the toddler years questions to ask instead of just “waiting and seeing” what you can start doing today to support your child, at any age If you’re a parent who doesn’t want to rely on assumptions or old myths, this conversation will give you the clarity and confidence to ask better questions, seek the right kind of help, and support your child’s development from the very beginning. === 🌟 Join the Inside Talking Toddlers community for exclusive deep dives and get Erin’s free guide: Top 10 ESSENTIAL Skills For Talking. Send us a text If you want your baby or toddler to talk well — not just say more words — this episode is your starting point. Because IMITATION is the skill that comes before gestures, babbling, understanding, and eventually… real talking. Most parents overlook imitation. Many professionals gloss over it. But after 35 years helping babies and toddlers communicate, I can tell you this with absolute certainty: Toddlers learn to imitate long before they learn to talk — and imitation is one of the strongest predictors of early speech. In today’s episode, I’m walking you through the real building blocks beneath talking and how imitation shapes attention, connection, and communication. You’ll learn: • what imitation actually is (it’s not just copying words!) • the layers of imitation your child moves through • the connection between imitation, gestures, and early language • the simple mistake many parents make without even realizing it • playful, natural ways to spark imitation at home — starting today Whether your little one is 9 months, 12 months, 18 months, or closer to 2, this episode will help you see communication in a whole new way — long before the words appear. ====== ✨ LIVE WORKSHOP — Dec 6 How to Get Your Baby Talking: 3 Daily Routines That Build Real Words On Friday, December 6, I’m hosting a LIVE 90-minute workshop where I’ll pull back the curtain and show you exactly how to use three everyday routines to grow your baby’s communication from infancy through 24 months. 👉 Click here to see all the details + save your seat. Send us a text The Hidden Step Before First Words (Every Parent Misses This One) If your toddler isn’t using many words yet, this episode will change the way you see early communication. Most parents—and honestly, many professionals—focus on the number of words. But talking doesn’t begin with words. It begins with the body, with connection, and with one crucial developmental step that predicts everything that comes next. In today’s episode, Erin pulls back the curtain on the hidden foundations of communication—what really happens before first words—and why this matters for every child from 6 months to 2½ years and beyond. In this episode, you’ll learn: • the overlooked skill that shows up months before talking • why gestures are symbolic communication (just like words!) • how noisy babies, motor movement, and early imitation shape language • surprising predictors of later vocabulary growth • what the CDC’s “30-month” update got dangerously wrong • how parents can spot healthy communication patterns early on • simple ways to support your baby or toddler today Whether you have a baby just finding their voice, a toddler who’s slow to talk, or you’re simply a parent who wants to understand your child’s development with confidence—this episode will give you clarity, direction, and peace of mind. Because talking isn’t a milestone… it’s a process. Send us a text Why are so many mothers leaving the workforce — and what does it mean for our children? The Washington Post calls it “erasing pandemic gains.” But after 35+ years as a speech-language pathologist working with hundreds of families, I see something deeper: maybe these mothers are choosing to reclaim what matters most. In this episode, I share two powerful family stories that illustrate the difference presence makes — one stretched thin and overwhelmed, the other grounded and intentional — plus the science that backs it up: Erica Komisar’s research on the first three years as a critical window for brain and emotional development. Head Start’s long-term studies showing short-term academic gains faded by third grade, while the strongest benefits were relational. Hart & Risley’s “30 million word gap” study — not just about word counts, but the quality of interaction, proving that presence and tone matter more than quantity. We’ll talk about identity, vocation, and why women can have it all — just NOT all at the same time. And why childhood is too precious to rush. 👉 Read the original Washington Post article here: Mothers are leaving the workforce, erasing pandemic gains ✨ If this episode gave you something to think about, share it with a mom who needs encouragement today. Send us a text This episode is Part 2 of our deep dive into ‘Gentle Parenting Trends’—and why social media doesn’t always model the best examples for real-life parenting. If you haven’t listened to Part 1 yet, I highly recommend starting there first! In that episode, I covered the first two key developmental stages: ✅ 12-18 months – The early stages of independence, how cause-and-effect learning is still concrete, and why emotional development starts with attunement from infancy... but it's up to us to shape it. ✅ 18-24 months – The beginning of boundary testing, the emerging nature of language, and why expecting toddlers to understand ‘why’ or ‘how’ questions is unrealistic. 👉 Listen to Part 1 here: CLICK NOW Now, in Part 2, we’re tackling the third stage—ages 2 to 3 years —when social and emotional awareness starts to develop. This is when impulse control begins to emerge as the prefrontal cortex slowly comes online. But here’s the reality: this part of the brain won’t fully mature until adulthood, so expecting self-regulation at this stage is not realistic. However, there are things we can do to support—or unintentionally inhibit —this process. In this episode, I’ll break down: ✔️ How to guide your toddler through impulse control challenges ✔️ What lifestyle changes can strengthen (or weaken) self-regulation ✔️ Why social media ‘gentle parenting’ scripts often set parents up for frustration Let’s cut through the confusion and focus on what truly helps your toddler thrive! ============================ Building Vocabulary Guide - get it NOW! Send us a text Are social media’s parenting trends helping—or hurting—new moms? Over the last few years, parenting trends like ‘Gentle Parenting’ have exploded on social media . While some aspects—like respecting your child and guiding them with empathy—are rooted in good intentions , the reality is that many influencers distort these concepts , leaving parents confused, overwhelmed, and even paralyzed by indecision. Many moms today are questioning: 🌀 “Should I never say no?” 🌀 “If my toddler melts down, am I supposed to just sit with them forever?” 🌀 “If I set a boundary, will that harm our connection?” 🚨 The truth is: Parenting isn’t a program. It’s a relationship. 🚨 And that’s why we need to keep it simple . In this episode of Talking Toddlers , we cut through the noise of Gentle Parenting and get back to what really matters: understanding child development. We break down the toddler years (12 months to 3 years) and why milestones are more than just checkboxes—they’re the foundation for setting healthy boundaries, guiding behavior, and building emotional resilience. Send us a text You don't need to interact with and entertain your baby during every waking moment. Babies need time on their own, too, so they can gradually start to understand that they're independent from you. Slowing life down a bit and letting your child be bored can have lots of benefits. One of the first things you may notice - even in very young babies - is that it allows them to explore on their own. They seek out what interests them instead of relying on us to provide them with something to be interested in. Your little one deserves the best, and it starts with embracing the beauty of boredom. That’s where boredom gives children an inner quiet that helps with imagination and self-awareness. ===================== In this episode, we'll uncover 10 essential strategies that every new mom can use to harness the power of natural boredom. Social Skills Supercharge: Picture this – your toddler hosting a teddy bear picnic or sharing toys with imaginary friends. These make-believe interactions aren't just adorable; they're social training grounds. Pretend play helps toddlers grasp the nuances of sharing, taking turns, and understanding others' perspectives. It's a social skills boot camp that happens organically through play. Emotional Intelligence Boost: Behind those superhero capes and tea party tiaras lies a world of emotions waiting to be explored. Pretend play allows toddlers to express, understand, and navigate a range of feelings in a safe, imaginative space. It's like a mini therapy session, helping them build emotional resilience and empathy – crucial tools for a lifetime of healthy relationships. Send us a text In this episode, we take a deep dive into the fascinating world into the crucial stages of babbling with your baby. CLICK HERE TO GRAB ESSENTIAL CHECKLIST We explore the significance of both cooing and babbling as precursors to language development, serving as windows into your child’s cognitive and communicative abilities. For those with older toddlers, these insights will help determine if they're slow talkers, plateaued, or right on track. Drawing from over three decades of clinical practice and real-life experience, I guide you on why being intentional during these moments is paramount. Unfortunately, not many professionals discuss the significance of babbling, perhaps because they don’t fully understand it themselves. More importantly, the common advice to "just wait, he’ll find his way" is, in my opinion, evasive. I share insights from the rich history of research on early child development, emphasizing the importance of actively engaging with your baby during these formative stages. Send us a text It's a common 'go to' and has been around for centuries, so why are there so many questions? Do ALL babies use pacifiers? Are there possible risks or side effects? What can I do INSTEAD to help my fussy baby? In this episode I cover these questions and strategies to build your understanding, make a plan and create a strategy for each stage of your baby's first year. All babies are not equal ... you know that, so we have to sometimes step back and look at a variety of possibilities. While pacifiers have some benefits, there are some downsides. And since many babies often fall in love with theirs, it’s worth considering both sides of the debate before you introduce them. Send us a text Kids and snacks go together like peanut butter and jelly, but for parents, the non-stop requests for more food can leave you frustrated and burnt-out…and perhaps wondering why? The truth is that toddlers' bodies need plenty of healthy, nutrient-dense calories to support growth and development. But kids also need boundaries to help them make smart, healthy choices when it comes to what (and when) they eat. By using 5 Simple Steps like meal schedules and open discussion about hunger, you can help your toddler learn how to listen to their bodies. In this episode we cover WHY kids end up snacking/grazing all day and HOW you can redesign your kitchen habits. Send us a text Success can look different to each of us ... but I bet you have some 'idea' of how you see your toddler in the future ... confident, curious, helpful, kind, creative? How can we help him or her achieve that? Well it starts with PLAY ... to explore their environment, try new things, and solve problems (through play) they build confidence, social competence, and emotional stability. Listen to this week's episode to hone your understanding of the best form of PLAY! OPEN-ENDED PLAY ... It is play with no direction, no limits, rules, or interference. It is letting your child use his imagination free from predefined limits or expectations. No amount of technology can do for the developing child’s brain what a box, a pile of clay, or a tub of wooden blocks can do. You don’t need expensive toys – nor do you need a lot of toys. For engaging, self-directed learning to happen in your home, you need toys to encourage open-ended play. Show them a few ideas ... set the stage ... and then let them run with it. As you prepare for the holiday season ... keep it simple. Keep it healthy. Keep it fun. EAT. TALK. PLAY. Send us a text In this episode I cover some exciting NEW SCIENCE that helps us understand developmental risk factors and how much influence we have on our babies and toddlers. If Autism is genetic, can we do anything to minimize its impact? Are we stuck with what we have inherited, or can our environment influence how our genes unfold? What about the Nature vs Nurture debate? Does it matter? I love to question science, because I was taught science is never settled. This seems especially true with early child development. Send us a text Many parents intuitively know the importance of play in child development, but despite its many benefits, we rarely associate play with LEARNING . For most people, learning involves acquiring a specific new skill, such as memorizing alphabets, counting, or colors and shapes. They often believe that playing is only for fun and involves no "actual learning." However, according to studies, playing is learning . Children learn through everyday experiences - that are playful, interesting, engaging, rewarding and thought provoking. The importance of play in early childhood cannot be underestimated --- because learning through play is essential to a child’s growth and well-being. Current research strongly suggests that over 54% of children under 10 years of age have a chronic condition. YET ... new research indicates 50% of developmental challenges are preventable! Our modern day lifestyle can be tricky to navigate, but there are better choices out there. I want to challenge you to step into your own light, ask some hard questions and ** I must preface this episode with, I am not a medical doctor nor nutritionist. If you have questions please contact your family health care provider. My intent here is for educational purposes, only. To inspire parents to peel back some layers and inquire deeper. Seek medical advice as you see fit. I'm asking questions that you may also ask. There are now many well-researched studies that prove beneficial effects of physical activity on: brain power motivation & concentration memory & reasoning classroom attitudes & behaviors language skills Evidence show that physically active kids have brain synapses that fire faster and stronger, and are 20% more likely to earn better grades ( not that grades are the end goal), but overall academic performance, social skills and self-esteem are!!! Send us a text In this episode I cover three main mistakes many parents, therapists and teachers unknowingly fall into that makes it harder for toddlers to learn how to speak. I've learned over the years in private practice, that once your toddler starts using words, we often forget they are still in the "process" of developing phrases and sentences. Learning to "listen" and learning to "understand" are two different processes. We may assume they can "keep up" with our rapid speech rate, and when they can't... they often shut down. We all need reminders to SLOW DOWN, give some wait time, and be patient. Take a listen with an open mind. Be willing to consider making a few changes just might open your toddler up to chatting more and melting down less. I know you're feeling overwhelmed most days, just like your toddler. Give you and your family some space to relax and truly enjoy the moments these summer days can provide - if you let them. Send us a text Learning how to discipline a toddler without totally loosing your cool is possible. Here are a few concepts I cover in today's episode ... YOU'VE GOT THIS: Praise your child’s good behavior, but do so without giving external rewards. Start labeling how he feels instead of putting him in a timeout or giving empty threats and warnings. Make sure his needs are met, making him less likely to throw a fit. Set boundaries and establish your expectations about how you treat one another. Focus on staying calm above all else—this will help you think clearer and him to settle down as well. Yep, even as he reaches for the cord or drops his food all over the floor... you are calm and level headed. Toddlers learn quickly ... if we are clear, consistent, and calm. Send us a text Today’s episode is about limiting beliefs - how they may influence how we parent our children, how focusing on behavior can create power struggles, and how we can alter our parenting style to parent with our kids instead of over them. Typically we take on limiting beliefs unconsciously, often in childhood. Relationships with primary caretakers, teachers, coaches influence us as we are dependent on these people when we’re young. Send us a text Watching your baby grow is one of the best parts of parenting: first smiles, words, and steps are moments many of us remember for the rest of our lives. There are also subtler baby milestones, like when your baby begins reacting to music or uses their tongue to move food around in their mouth. All milestones, big and small, are important to your child’s development Milestones are meant as guides rather than strict barometers of developmental “success.” Developmental windows—periods of time during which your child is primed to learn a new skill—are flexible and variable. They depend on a number of factors, including interest and temperament. Your almost 2 year old is AMAZING and his behaviors help you see inside his cognitive & emotional development. Don't just look at the basic skills, you want to understand the finer nuances - and watch your toddler FLOURISH. Send us a text In this episode Erin discusses how: Nutrition plays a crucial role in your child's development. Food can be both medicine and an energy source for the body Investigating food intake and absorption can help identify potential obstacles to development. Important to look beyond just the symptoms of speech and language disorders and consider other aspects of a child's health and behavior Parents can take an active role in supporting their child's development by being observant, collecting information, and challenging the status quo Closing the gap by even 10-20% is still progress Parents should not accept symptoms as "new normals." With the right support and interventions, children can develop into their healthiest, happiest selves. Listen and enjoy establishing true connection with your little guy or gal. Send us a text This episode I cover Tummy Time and how best to support your baby with courage, knowledge, and true success. Growth and development are NOT linear. It's necessary beyond strength and coordination. Listen through and learn how it builds conscious intellectual activity! Tummy Time supports: Visual skills / depth perception - visual & auditory connection/integration Open up hands / thumb - grabbing and picking small items (utensils, object play) Prevents / mitigate plagiocephaly & torticollis Lengthen & strengthen front of the bod y: roll-over, sit-up, crawl, stand & walk Baby Led Weaning introduces solid foods around ~ 6 months START with goal of 1-2 mins for every wake period / broken up in 24 hrs Think BURSTS: provide a few seconds on your chest, football position, or lap Around the second month introduce floor with a towel rolled up under him/her TOYS to distract are very helpful But remember... YOU are his #1 toy. You are her love interest. By 3 months work toward 60 mins of tummy time broken up throughout the whole day ... sprinkled across each waking period THE PURPOSE HERE is to find clarity & provide a place where moms can find peace knowing they don’t have to figure it out on their own. Send us a text We don't have to over-think toddlers. They are pretty straightforward. Look at their social-emotional growth, their physical development (large and small muscles), then - look at their verbal communication. In this episode, I continue the 4 real-life cases of 'late talkers.' What types of behaviors do I gather during that first session? How can you do the same? Questions to ask yourself: How connected are we when we play peek-a-boo or a tickle game? Does he smile at strangers with purpose? Can he attend to a book for 2-5 minutes? (not 'reading" but sharing ) Does she try to talk? Can he follow my lead? Am I getting frustrated? Did he crawl or just start running? Have I ever really just watched him chew? These types of questions hold a wealth of knowledge and can help lead you to peace of mind. Listen to learn what information to gathered, so you can know. Send us a text What makes a Late Talker? Can we determine who will "grow out of it" and who will not? Are you asking, "When should you seek advice?" Send us a text The most common question I get from new parents is, "How do I help my baby or toddler learn to talk at home?" The key to increasing your child's language skills is simple (not always easy), but it's not complicated: model language, limit technology, and get messy! Children learn best with you ... through play-based interactions that can be embedded in every day activities. You might say to yourself, "yeah, I know that already." BUT do you live by these examples? Do you really think about how you engage with your baby or toddler? Are you really, REALLY present? Whether your little one is at home with you full-time or part-time; whether you use childcare / daycare or extended family ... new moms and new dads who are truly present, who understand building engagement and communication skills take everyday opportunities and commitment parenting. Send us a text Episode 022 PLAY is the WORK of your child … In this episode, I expand on what types of play is best for the 12 - 18 month old AND why they need you to play with them. It’s a very exciting growth period with a lot of Aha moments. Your toddler is constantly moving, doing, and trying things out … don’t inhibit this exploration. He is busy building his brain circuits! Also - I explain why they need to struggle - every once in a while. Don’t be so quick to “do it for them.” Childhood is messy - and us adults need to get comfortable with the mess, because the other side is brighter and so much more rewarding. Penelope Leach, author of Your Baby and Child: From Birth to Age Five wrote: For a small child there is not division between playing and learning; Between the things he or she does “just for fun” and things that are ‘educational.’ The child learns while living and any part of living that is enjoyable - is also play. It shouldn’t end with childhood. Let’s bring it back into our lives, through our children we can reignite our play skills. Everyone benefits. Send us a text Did you know that the lack of play can make us more vulnerable to depression, anxiety, impulsivity and sedentarism? Do you feel pressure to orchestrate your time with your toddler, or perhaps you were told "they figure it out on their own" - let them be kids. As we continue our discussion into the Science of PLAY I share the need for both ... some structure AND free style play... but the key is that YOU need to tap into your play skills, too. Parents are great models, guides and play partners. You don't want to misunderstand the reasons your kids are intrinsically driven to be playful, to tinker with objects, to get messy, to tell tales, to daydream, to make up songs, to wrestle and ride their bikes fast. As I wrap up discussing the "7 Types of PLAY" by Dr. Stuart Brown, it's important for you mom and dad to become real with your play skills - we often lose touch as adults - too busy, too many responsibilities? We may feel guilty or even embarrassed when we are "caught" messing around with no real purpose. The science is pretty revealing - PLAY is central to sparking excitement, achieving wholeness, and building resilience - it is NOT short-lived. We can rekindle it and I assure you, it will make you happier - and so will your kids. Play might be the most important work we ever do! So as you listen to this episode, think about how the new school routine can take over your schedule - more duty-like and less natural flow? Find some authentic family play time. Be creative and mix it up. Next week's episode I will share specific examples for different ages - but it's always important to have the background, the science that supports our theory, and some real-life experience. That's what TALKING TODDLERS is about - helping our youngest be engaged, curious, creative, playful, interested and happy - with YOU. Send us a text PLAY is as critical as sleep & nutrition to your child’s healthy development. In this episode, I continue to share the 7 Types of Play identified through Dr. Stuart Brown’s work at the National Institute For Play by exploring #4 SOCIAL PLAY. Social Play - one of the most complex forms of play, helps your child establish social norms, develop interpersonal skills, and helps him create successful friendships and relationships as adults. Research provides three subtypes of social play: belonging, celebratory and rough & tumble play - which I explain in great detail in today’s episode - i t’s that important . As our modern world continues to change we need to stay vigilant, building a better understanding on how best to support our children through these early, critical years. It’s not always easy, but it can be FUN! PLAY is anything but trivial … yet, it is what brings us pure joy, satisfaction and rich connection with others. Don't let it end with childhood. Let’s bring it back into our lives, through our children and our families, through neighborhood communities and play groups. Everyone benefits. “Play is as important to our mental health, as food is to our physical health.” If you haven't listened to Part 1 on PLAY, Episode 19 - go back and listen. I cover #1-3. Attunement - parents begin to establish an emotional connection with your infant through activities like peek-a-boo and parentese (sing-song baby talk). Body Play & Movement - your child develops a spatial understanding of themselves and world around them, for example: leaping in the air teaches him the effects of gravity. Object Play - playing with toys and objects develops problem-solving skills through exploration and manipulation. Send us a text In this episode Erin introduces the strong connection between the PRACTICE of PLAY and the emotional and cognitive development of the brain. PLAY is anything but trivial. It's a biological drive as integral to our health as sleep or nutrition. PLAY SCIENCE is a real thing - and we all need to take note - no matter what age, with or without children, at work and at home. This is the first episode in a series for the month of September - as we begin the Back-To-School schedule (whether that's inside home or at a school site) - we all need to re-evaluate our feelings toward play. I believe parents are getting bad advice - and play is getting a bad rap! I begin this conversation with introducing Dr. Stuart Brown's work and site his book, PLAY: How It Shapes the Brain, Opens the Imagination, and Invigorates the Soul He states, “Of all animal species, humans are the biggest players of all. We are built to play and built through play. When we play, we are engaged in the purest expression of our humanity, the truest expression of our individuality. Is it any wonder that often the times we feel most alive, those that make up our best memories, are moments of play? That is something that struck me.” The National Institute for Play (NIFP) describes seven different patterns of play - and I cover the first three in this episode. We will continue this discussion throughout September - as PLAY is that vital to your children! Consider these benefits: strong correlation between success & play activity builds self-confidence boosts creativity development of social skills helps memory, language and symbolic recognition teaches stress management promotes healthy physical development Subscribe so you won't miss any of these exciting episodes CLICK HERE Don't forget to rate and review the podcast on Apple Podcasts , and share with me when you’re listening! Send us a text Why do some kids persevere, figure it out, or seem to be unflappable? Are some kids just born that way? Can we become more resilient? Can we humans change our perception, develop grit and tenacity - or is it fixed at birth? In this episode, I dive deep into some of the original research behind the FIXED vs GROWTH MINDSET by Dr. Carol Dweck; how we can use her large body of work to benefit our parenting style while raising our children and even challenge ourselves to continue to grow and learn. Of course, I cover some honest controversies that appear 20 years into exploring her body of work and impressions - yet, I find much of the FIXED vs GROWTH MINDSET theory to be worthwhile and encourage all parents to consider how we approach effort vs. praise while raising toddlers and beyond. Remember, this podcast is about asking questions. The more I have studied the process of learning or how the brain learns to learn, the better I understand how growth and change are more in our control (even though we don't like to admit it) - maybe because then we are more accountable for the outcomes. We know that our words have meaning, and humans have a tendency to lock into those meanings with strict boundaries: I'm not very good at math. I don't like public speaking. I am a slow reader. I get frustrated easily. I'm not very creative. Now don't get me wrong, I do believe we all have different strengths and weaknesses - different gifts and interests, and we tend to gravitate toward the things we are good at and make us feel better about ourselves. But where did some of the initial "perceptions" come from? Send us a text Can you separate brain facts from brain fiction? In this episode I cover how several brain myths , or neuromyths, won't go away and have led us to ineffective or even counterproductive strategies as parents, teachers, and students. Don't fall for them! Challenge yourself to think logically as I walk you through 5 Neuromyths that persist - even when debunked years ago! So why do misconceptions about the brain continue? Most people simply want to believe - it's an easy, quick answer to personal challenges or when faced with a child who "beats to a different drum." Yet, research indicates that most of what teachers are ' sure they know about the brain' is simply wrong - even when faced with limited evidence. In this episode, I share some possible reasons behind this persistence and how parents can weed through the noise. Legitimate science results get oversimplified by the media to generate sensationalized headlines Complex science results are misinterpreted and Word-Of-Mouth carries them through schools, teaching methods, parent coaching, and personal growth programs. Results are over-generalized and seem to take hold into everyday interactions - AND policies, programs and trainings are created around weak, general assumptions. I admit, it can be confusing - especially since researchers themselves can't even agree on how best to study the brain ... BUT that doesn't mean we don't question such broad sweeping statements, such as "we only use 10% of our brain's capacity." I promise after listening to this episode you will feel more empowered to ask questions, listen to your intuition and begin to let go of misconceptions that don't serve your children. Send us a text I am often asked, "What would you do if you were in my shoes?" If I could take my 35 years of clinical practice, continued education and training, plus my personal parenting experience - without a doubt, these would be my TOP 10 PARENTING ESSENTIALS. They aren't in any specific order, but they do relate to one another. Parenting through these first three years is often exhausting, but if you have a framework it's much more fun! Unfortunately, too many parents (especially moms) feel so alone, overwhelmed or embarrassed to ask for help. Navigating this modern day life doesn't come with a "manual" - yes, there is a lot of noise on the internet and too many books to filter through, but that just seems to add to feelings of inadequacies. Today's episode gives you the top 10 areas to focus on: Breastfeed/breast milk Tummy Time Baby Led Weaning Read, read, read Music Crawling Limited Screen Time Build Routines Narrate Play with Purpose KEEP IT SIMPLE: Focus on the basics: nutrition, movement, talking, sharing, singing, building routines, play together - then question if screen time is necessary? Your little one needs YOU over anything else - your time, your attention, your love and your understanding. Keep them close to home for as long as possible... growth & development are a process. It happens over time, everyday, through everyday activities and meaningful engagement. But moms, dads, grandparents and primary caretakers across the board need to stay vigilant - becoming empowered with knowledge helps build courage to stand up for your beliefs. Send us a text This episode covers why parents need to step up and be their child's strongest (and best informed) advocate. We can't rely on "systems" such as your pediatricians, early intervention, preschools, or educators. Too many of them take the "wait & see" approach, are spread too thin, or simply don't have the knowledge to inquire further. Parents who have a better understanding of how to use / interpret developmental milestones are in a much better position to guide their child to success, health and happiness. Yes, there are ranges, but that does NOT mean we don't have expectations. In this episode Erin encourages all parents: To be your own detective Recognize sweeping generalizations are misleading Don't take the "wait & see" approach Erin touches upon how the recent CDC changes in their developmental milestones caused serious concerns across various disciplines, and how the controversy is far from over. https://www.ldonline.org/ld-topics/speech-language/speech-and-language-milestone-chart https://www.asha.org/slp/schools/prof-consult/norms/ As always, if you get value from this episode, please subscribe so you do not miss out, rate and review the podcast on Apple Podcasts , and share with me when you’re listening! Send us a text In this episode we cover the four (4) main parenting styles and how they influence your toddler's learning. I always use "labels" with a word of caution , but they can be helpful when we are learning something new or searching for a better understanding. The quadrants are on a continuum, a kind of slider ruler. We can change according to the situation, developmental stage, number of children, outside pressure, family history and internal voice of "should's" or "could's." Permissive : No rules; absolute indulgence; "How can I say NO to you?" Authoritarian : High demand & High expectation; Rules, Rules, Rules; I am the Boss Neglectful : Uninvolved; careless; aloof; lack of compassion or warmth; distracted Authoritative : clear boundaries; High expectation with equal reciprocal; "Can we discuss?" Assertive yet compassionate I encourage you to be OPEN to learning and evaluating where you are today - knowing we can always make different choices tomorrow. Let our children watch how we are willing to own our mistakes, come back to the relationship, and start again. This modern life brings many mixed outcomes - which means we all need to be vigilant with how we show up, design and shape our days; and how we create daily habits that either support growth and expansion, or restrict it. Do you come to the table with an OPEN - or FIXED - mindset? How do you see your toddler in the future? Help build his "learning muscles" by providing boundaries, clear expectations, and room to mess up without fear, guilt, or shame. Parenting is a learning process. Give yourself room to develop how to nurture, discipline through guidance and practice open communication. Send us a text In this episode we continue to make a strong connection with eating / chewing and speech development from 18 - 24 months of age. Understanding that kids' preferences may wax and wane doesn't change your style of parenting. Parenting with consistency requires us to set the boundaries around healthy choices while allowing exploration. Parents who understand how structure, function and development fit together can feel confident their toddler stays on track, and feels at peace even when it gets messy! Send us a text In this episode we continue the series on the connection between eating and speech development. There is a massive developmental explosion - again - between 9 and 15 months and parents feel better prepared and act with confidence when they know what to expect. Toddlers can be unpredictable at times, yet when families have a plan and are able to develop routines, you find peace more often than not. Parenting with intention makes the whole family more relaxed. You look forward to meal times, you understand it's a learning process, you are open to being messy, and truly embrace your toddler's growth! We don't want to rush these beautiful days; we want to slow them down and savor each developmental milestone. Watching your toddler build a healthy relationship with food, being able to recognize when he's just fussy or tired and not truly hungry - will alleviate many struggles. Send us a text In this episode I share the truth about Fruit & Vegetable Pouches. I cannot speak how eating/chewing and speech development are connected without sharing the truth on pouches… we’ve been duped! Babies and toddlers MUST experience a variety of food tastes, textures and consistencies in order to build a healthy relationship with real food - as well as exercise their oral-motor skills, LITERALLY. Chewing and speech go hand-in-hand. I cover the TOP 3 reasons these abundant food pouches are NOT IN YOUR FAVOR and actually WORKING AGAINST your little guy's development. Listen with an open mindset. NO EXPERIENCE with real food - it's all pureed together! How do you learn the differences between: broccoli, carrots, chicken, ham, berries, or apples? - no touching, smelling, tasting, or looking at different foods - no chewing which starts the digestion process and helps sense when you're satiated or full - no opportunity to learn how to feed themselves (fists, fingers, spoon) - just suck??? - no texture means NO actual chewing (which stimulates teeth eruption and strengthens jaws - which helps with tongue placement ... leading to better speech sounds!) Yikes, it's all connected. 2. MISLEADINGLY SWEET - everything is blended with cheaper and sweeter foods (apples/pears), so the “spinach” or “quinoa” are masked with sugar! How do they develop a taste between foods such as broccoli and beef? 3. NO REAL FIBER - do we really wonder why kids have gut/digestion/poop issues? For example (on average): 1 pouch has 12-15 grams of sugar and 1 gram of fiber 1 cup of sliced apples has 11 grams of sugar and 3 grams of fiber 1 pouch has 1 tablespoon of sugar!!!! Chewing an actual apple gives your child fiber, chewing experience (lips/jaw/tongue workout) and satisfaction! Even when parents / consumers pushed-backed against the amount of sugar … the companies diluted the “recipe” with water to decrease the percentage of sugar per pouch… interesting strategy, right? Bottom line: real food = real development & real learning! Happy listening! Send us a text The human being is an intricate system of systems - and navigating this modern world keeps parents on their toes - or at least it should. Whether you're thinking about having a baby, just became a new parent , or a parent of a first grader - this episode will help shed light on how the developmental parts fit together. We often need to step back and get different perspectives to see the whole picture (whole child.) Here we continue to review the remarkable connection between eating and speech development - and even if your little guy is getting ready for 1st grade, reflect back to how you managed those first several years. Is there a connection? How is his attention, listening, speaking, organization, and engagement? Knowledge is empowering and can bring clarity when there's uncertainty. We can meet our kids where they are and support growth and independence when we ourselves feel supported and understood. If you haven't listened to last week's episode - it would be helpful to go back now to #007. Today's episode covers the 4 - 9 month period and here are some the the highlights: when does your baby first start to use jaw, lip, tongue muscles separately? when do teeth begin to come in for chewing & biting... how does that relate to speech? what kind of "workouts" help to make more room in your baby's mouth for safe eating? doesn't a baby just start talking when he/she is ready? how do tummy time, high chair sitting, and speech relate? are puree foods necessary? why do baby's make such a mess eating? is chewing with your mouth closed automatic? what's grading at this age? is Baby-Led Weaning a real thing? what about choking? Send us a text This episode topic is SO CRITICAL that I ended up creating a series which will be covered over the next several weeks. You won't want to miss any of them! This episode is Part 1, and we dive deep into your baby's or toddler's relationship between early eating (sucking and chewing) and speech development. Why? Because we are "hard-wired" to do both AND one feeds the other (pun intended.) Unfortunately, parents often feel lost or overwhelmed with the amount of information out there, and pediatrician office visits lack the time and honestly, the knowledge to help with specific questions. Yet, feeding, eating and speech challenges continue to rise. Again, we must ask, Why? Parents are looking for clear information on how best to navigate this modern world, raise healthy eaters, strong communicators, and happily engaged young kids! I begin by describing critical primitive reflexes which are necessary for survival, then we move into what oral motor structures and functions to observe and monitor in the first three months. I also touch upon two (2) additional areas of development that are KEY to building strength, stability, coordination, and a healthy immune system! These areas cannot be overlooked or under-estimated. You may want to listen to it twice! It's that important. To help you become your child's Number 1 guide and influencer, I also created a "Check List" you will want to download. CLICK HERE to sign up to my email list and DOWNLOAD YOUR COPY NOW. Even if your little guy or gal is a bit older (1-5 years old), this will be very helpful as you may unravel any current issues or questions. This will empower you to seek appropriate support through a feeding specialist, speech pathologist or other highly specialized professional. Maybe you're working with a therapist already, and they are focusing on individual sounds your child is struggling with - BUT they aren't addressing the oral-motor (physical) aspects of speech. Hmmm. Unfortunately, that happens more often than I'd like to admit. This series will help you generate questions to bring to your speech therapist, teacher or pediatrician. Don't settle with "it takes time" or "he'll speak better when he's ready." Nope. Kids would be clear and understood, IF THEY COULD! Remember, this is just the beginning. We will continue this discussion over the next several weeks. Stay tuned and share with family, friends, other therapists, your doctor and/or school. Happy listening! Send us a text In this episode I share the importance of understanding how speech skills and language development differ. Parents are pivotal in laying this foundation, especially in the first few years, so you don't ever want to leave it to chance. When you know why babbling is an important precursor to his first words - you'll want to sing, read, and giggle all day long with your little one. When you realize YOU are the most important influencer in your young child's life ... you may want to rethink preschool, or perhaps adjust the hours. Either way, this episode will bring clarity and purpose to your everyday activities as you nurture both speech and language development with certainty. In later episodes we'll dive deep into oral motor (speech & eating) skills, so today it's about recognizing how to nurture your whole child. We know our modern world provides a lot of wonderful conveniences - BUT if we keep these early years close to home, bring back basics, make it natural and engaging - your beautiful child will stay on track and thrive! Being an informed parent helps you understand subtle differences, identify issues early, seek professional help with intention, and prevent life-long challenges. It's all about prevention. Mindful parenting lets you guide your child's development with confidence, grace, excitement and ease - you'll still be exhausted, but it'll be because of a full day of playing with purpose! Send us a text Reading To Babies And Beyond - The Top 4 Purposes In this episode, I share specific purposes behind reading to your baby and beyond. No matter what age you start, reading aloud gives you the best bang for the buck - regarding time, money and effort. It cannot be understated. Remember what your END GOAL is … build a love for literacy, rich vocabulary, positive attention, imagination and healthy connections, to just name a few. Reading and writing skills are two sides of the same coin - and are NOT NATURAL. They are built upon a strong oral language system, i.e., listening and talking. Reading aloud provides so much opportunity - at any age! Parents can sometimes overlook this rich-language experience, thinking, “babies don’t understand yet, reading to them is more important later.” NOPE … not true. Listen to gain insight into just how remarkable newborns, babies and toddlers are - and how much they rely on you to guide them through this modern world. Even if you don’t like reading out loud … he’s just a baby, he needs you and your voice! Purpose #1: Connection & Bonding - your voice is their life-line Purpose #2: Books as a Script (facilitating tool) - use everywhere, everyday Purpose #3: Create Routines to build self-regulation and independence Purpose #4: Language Acquisition takes practice and needs 21,000 words a day (minimum) Books are your friend - and together build endless opportunities. Send us a text In this episode, I share that although newborns / babies are designed to acquire speech and language naturally, it takes effort ... by all parties - the caretakers and the baby / toddler. Human babies are born highly unfinished ... they are still under construction. We understand better how everyday experiences wire our brains (neuroplasticity) and create neuro-connections and networks (learning), but most kids need to be encouraged and convinced to put in the effort. We can't forget how much our kids rely on us to guide them, model and practice. Early development is "natural" BUT it's just the beginning - parents are pivotal in guiding their children and helping the succeed - keep moving forward. Even if it's common in this modern day to "let kids be kids" or to think "they'll figure it all out on their own." My mission is to remind parents of the remarkable gift they have, and how to enhance every day activities to benefit growth, build relationships and acquire language processing skills. Learning is cumulative - and life long, but we humans must override our desire to "just survive another day." Your baby / toddler needs you to show them the way! Take inventory - how are your interactions; how much do you truly engage with your little guy or gal beyond taking care of personal needs? This modern day world is busy, stressful and overwhelming - especially as a parent. Being mindful is easier said than done, but I want to share what a difference it makes. Happy listening! Send us a text This episode continues from last week, discussing the 10 Must-Haves to Get to First Words . Children don't just wake up on their first birthday and start talking ... there is A LOT of serious work, growth, and development that can sometimes get lost in the shuffle between feedings, diapers, sleeping and just keeping your little one safe! Last episode we covered the first 5, so if you haven't listened to last week, go back for #1 - 5. It's important you get the whole early developmental process - just like when building a house, we NEED A STRONG FOUNDATION. Tune in to learn: #6. PLAYS APPROPRIATELY WITH A VARIETY OF TOYS - pretend play is closely related to speech & language development. It demonstrates your child is beginning to understand how the world works and how s/he can engage. #7. RECEPTIVE LANGUAGE - understanding simple, concrete statements is critical to staying on-track. This is often THE MOST OVERLOOKED red flag. #8. USE HIS / HER VOICE - intentional & purposeful vocalization. Babies need to be noisy! These are the important prelinguistic "workouts" - grunts, squeals, whines, and babbling. #9. GESTURES - your child is truly using gestures on his own, with intent and purpose: waving, pointing, blows kiss, shakes head no, pats or gives you objects. CLICK HERE for the article I mentioned in the episode, by FIRST WORDS* Project. * This article does highlight "Earlier is Better" - but please recognize that if a child continues to struggle beyond his 3rd birthday - do NOT limit your expectations. Those first three years are using 'mother nature' to the fullest - kids are typically little sponges, but growth & development is LIFE LONG. Keep asking questions and seeking guidance. #10. IMITATION of ACTIONS - Your child does this routinely! This would include gestures, sounds, simple words and actions. And s/he is beginning to initiate interactions much more easily with others to get needs met AND to play with you! Happy listening! Send us a text In this episode, I introduce the first 5 precursors a baby must have to be Developmentally Ready to Talk for you to consider. This modern world can be confusing, and I don't want you to leave it to chance or to feel uncertain. Some parents may not be aware how much they can do with their babies to build a strong language foundation and help establish a true connection. Growth and development are not passive. They need YOU to be their guide. If you're feeling a bit lost, I provide specifics on how to prioritize and what to look for - even during every day activities, such as bathing or eating. Parents can entice, connect, and strengthen early speech skills, naturally. You've got this! Next week's episode will cover #6-10 @erin.hyer www.HyerLearning.com

Because of her 35 years of clinical practice - on the floor, working with a variety of families, consulting with preschools, training teachers and new graduate students, diving deep into the science, asking questions - she refuses to get sucked into the overwhelming acceptance of “new normals” - skyrocketing numbers of late talkers, non-verbal preschoolers, ADHD, Autism, Anxiety, poor sleep, picky eating, lack of self-regulation, and the list goes on. Erin’s experience has given her opportunities to be part of those who continually question this “fixed” mindset - those who’s very nature is to “think outside the box,” to peel back the layers, ask WHY, and find solutions. If you’re a new mom who's eager to truly shape your toddler’s growth, to be proactive, refuse to leave it “to chance,” or unwilling to “wait & see” - you’ll love following Talking Toddlers - as Erin’s mission is to reduce the clutter, communicate clearly, and build a community of like-minded courageous mothers.
