The 232nd episode of the GreatBase Tennis podcast is based on a question Steve Smith asked Dave Anderson. Steve asked David, "What should be a theme to help US tennis?" David answered, "Back to the future." In basing a podcast episode on Dave's answer, Steve stated that there would be no one better to address the topic than the legendary Chuck Kriese. To make an understatement, the words of the veteran coach should be heard. Richard Hernandez joined Steve and Dave. The three asked Chuck questions but unfortunately, Richard's reception was lost halfway through the discussion. Our apologies. Hopefully, our listeners will find the session to be informative and insightful. Most importantly, hopefully, our listeners will find the session to be worthy of their time.

Merry Christmas On the 228th episode of the GreatBase Tennis podcast, Steve, Ivan, and Andy interview Peter Kobelt. To make an understatement, Peter's journey in tennis is remarkable. By the end of his collegiate career, he held the OSU record for most doubles matches won and tied the record for most matches won in a single season. Furthermore, he earned the #1 singles ranking in doubles and the #2 national ranking in doubles. He was honored as an All-American multiple times and then proceeded to travel the world playing pro tennis. He reached the ATP rankings, 332 in singles and 378 in doubles. Following his pro career, Peter spent two years working as a volunteer coach at the University of Kentucky. On the 221st episode of the GreatBase Tennis podcast, Steve Smith, Ivan Ozerets, Dave Anderson, and Andy Fitzell pay tribute to Rafael Nadal. The over-used cliche, there will never be another, applies. We all have heard the phrase, never say never. Yet in the history of tennis, there is one situation that comes to mind where the word never can be used. Never again, will one tennis player win 14 French Opens. The commentary of our foursome is certainly more of a review of Rafa's character than his tennis. With total humility, Rafa displayed the absolute best example of the human competitive spirit. Every curriculum for tennis development from this point forward should have a chapter dedicated to Rafael and his team.

All these years later, Richard and David have collectively developed hundreds of college tennis players. The story at hand started 44 years ago and clearly points out that one would be wise to take a deep dive into the free educational content provided by GreatBase. The pathway is proven. Clayton, Happy 50th.

On the 203rd episode of the GreatBase Tennis podcast, Steve Smith, Ivan Ozerets and Andres Barbosa talk about tennis from the service line in. The whys and why-nots of going forward in singles and doubles are discussed. The statement that one only goes to the net to pick up balls and shake hands used to only apply to little kids at the grass root level. Now the statement applies to all levels of play. The disappearance of wooden racquets, the players not wearing spikes on the grass at Wimbledon, and the two-handed backhand becoming commonplace are dated factors. The new theme of "serve plus one" is instant coffee, a much faster approach than trying to learn to play a complete all-court game. As always, we hope our listeners acquire a higher level of understanding of the complexities of tennis by tuning in. We also hope our listeners will find a way to encourage fellow tennis enthusiasts to not fall victim to net phobia.

On the 197th episode of the GreatBase podcast, Steve Smith speaks with Nomena Raharinosy. To make an understatement, her tennis story is well worth listening to. Her journey with our sport covers three continents. (Africa, Europe, North America) She started in a humble, low-key, no-hype tennis environment in her native Madagascar. From there, she was fortunate to spend several of her formative years in Paris, France. Her next adventure was spending the last two years of her high school days at a Florida-based academy. She was awarded a (US) college scholarship at the end of her junior career. Nomena enjoyed many highlights as a player. One would be representing her country in numerous international events. Another would be becoming a Texas Longhorn for life. While playing for the University of Texas, she won the type of match that would make a movie script. She had the challenge of winning the last match out in the semi-finals of the NCAA national team championships. Her win clinched her team's trip to the final. With the opportunity, the girls wearing Burnt Orange won the coveted national title. Nomena now lives in Canada with her husband and their two children. She runs a business with one of her first childhood tennis friends. She also watches her children work on tennis fundamentals. One connection that helps ensure her confidence in the GreatBase pathway is that she now knows that two boys (Clayton Stanley and Chad Clark) who played at Texas when she did were brought up with the same scientific-based information.

On the 191st episode of the GreatBase Tennis podcast, Steve Smith has a conversation with Lawrence Hyde. The Englishman recently spent 350-plus hours studying with Steve. The primary topics covered were: tennis, tennis teaching, coaching, character development, player development, and the ins and outs of the tennis industry. Also, a healthy percentage of Lawrence's time was assisting with the production of personalized technical and tactical videos. Lawrence's impressive work ethic earned him the compliment that he was not just another intern. Steve said Lawrence's approach reminded him of some of his tennis-teaching students from the 80's. The Brit wrote notes by day and typed them by night. Prior to starting his internship, he completed all five of the GBTE online courses. Experience is best measured in a case-by-case scenario as opposed to just time in the game. Lawrence had the chance to observe and study early childhood development, juniors and college players as well as pros. He also sat in on meetings with parents and fellow coaches that were led by Steve. The goal of our podcasts is to share a tennis language that has been created by studying the contributions of eight outstanding pillars and logging 50 years of coaching players, teaching coaches, and guiding parents. Lawrence's notes were presented on the GreatBase Tennis Facebook page on 4/11/2024.

His next list will be for tennis administrators. Dave joined Steve in 1985 as a student. Steve revised a general recreation curriculum into a comprehensive curriculum for students seeking occupational competency as tennis-teaching pro-managers. On the 148th episode of the GreatBase Tennis podcast, Steve Smith talks with Stuart Van Horn. They talk about the playing and teaching career of Stuart's father, Welby Van Horn. His record as a player and teacher is nothing short of elite. In his era, Welby played against the best and beat the best. In 1939 at the age of 19, he was the youngest US Open finalist until Pete Sampras broke the record. His playing career was cut short by World War II and an asthmatic condition, yet he played professionally for a decade and was in the top ten in the world numerous times. Following his playing career, he taught tennis on four courts in San Juan, Puerto Rico and only taught the members' children. In the 1960s, he developed more US junior national champions than the state of Florida. He created his own systematic approach which was primarily based on balance. Tennis leaders around the world should embrace Welby's approach to starting beginning players. If so, more entry-level players would stay with tennis, and the game of tennis would enjoy increased participation.

On the 144th episode of the GreatBase Tennis podcast, Steve Smith and Andres Barbosa discuss their thoughts on the role of the sparring partner. Like anything, there are numerous interesting points to discuss. The term sparring comes from boxing; where one practices techniques and tactics to enhance performance. The sparring partner in boxing typically wears protective headgear, a mouth guard, and does not have a speaking part. The opposite occurs in tennis; where quite often the sparring partner in tennis takes on the role of also being a talking technician. The complexities pertaining to a sparring partner are of great significance because, without successful practice sessions, one will simply not become a successful player.

On the 74th episode of The GreatBase Tennis Podcast, Steve Smith and Brandon Flanagan interview one of the best teachers of character that our game has ever known. Our three hour discussion, in my opinion, should become a mandatory assignment for anyone connected to player development. Just the sayings from Chuck Kris's late mother are worth their weight in gold. A wide range of topics are covered and perhaps, the one Chuck addresses the most, is the pitfalls of shortening the scoring system in tennis. If you are not already a Chuck Kriese fan, we think you will be after listening to our interview with him.

Jim was a pioneer in his field and a vast majority of mental toughness experts continue to model their approach based on Jim's educational efforts. Arthur Ashe once said, "Jim Loehr may be the most important person in all of tennis." The power of this statement is based on how much Jim helped parents, players, and coaches with simple and sound advice that applies to all aspects of life.

In this episode, Steve Smith and Andy Fitzell interview South Africa's Raven Klaasen. Raven loves tennis as much as anyone on the planet. His story is remarkable; after his third knee operation, he was starting to think his dream of playing in our sport's biggest stadiums was not going to come true. He made his way to the ATP tour at a relatively late age. He has been a top ten doubles player for several years and was a finalist in two majors, Australia and Wimbledon. In his teenage years, Raven spent almost five years based at Steve's tennis school. He was the top-ranked player in his country but he was advised to rebuild and refine all aspects of his game under Steve's tutelage. He was referred to Steve by Craig Tiley, a fellow South African. In the 56th episode of our GreatBase Tennis Podcast, we interview Javier Palenque. Javier is a tennis activist. He cares deeply about the growth and welfare of our sport. His mission is to help America's governing body of tennis to help tennis. We think Javier should be heard. Perhaps there is some irony interviewing Javier during the US Open, one of the four Super Bowls of tennis. This year, the US Open is extra special with fans being back in the stands. The majors do create extraordinary highs and to a certain degree let tennis enthusiasts forget about the problems facing our sport. Javier has done his homework by studying and researching the business side of tennis. He considers USTA funds to be " public money," and in addition to citing problems, he offers solutions. We understand that some may think he is totally rocking the boat, but then there are those who don't think he can rock the boat because the boat is under water. Connect with Javier: https://www.linkedin.com/in/javierpalenque/ https://palenquej.medium.com/

On the 51st episode of The GreatBase Tennis podcast, we complete a three-part series on Vic Braden. To make an understatement, Vic Braden makes the Mount Rushmore of tennis teaching. We strongly feel the contributions that the late Vic Braden made to the tennis-teaching industry should never be forgotten. Most know the tennis-teaching profession struggles with professionalism. The wheel does not need to be recreated to combat the low and unregulated standards found far too often within tennis circles. Vic assembled the most and the best tennis information in the history of tennis. Sadly and tragically the breakthroughs Vic made through scientific principles have been abandoned. Confusion and chaos rule the day and anything goes in the wild, weird and wacky world of tennis teaching. The alphabet has been accepted. The sound and shape of the letter "A" have been accepted. Yet in tennis, the shape of the court being a rectangle has not been accepted. If facts were accepted such as the dimensions of the court and physical laws newcomers to tennis would not have to waste precious time and hard-earned money learning and practicing inefficient move after inefficient move. Hopefully, by listening to us discuss the work of our most significant mentor, tennis people will understand that we need to go backward and shine the light that Braden shined throughout his sixty years of being a tennis educator and researcher.

In 1981, Steve was given the privilege to revise the curriculum. He designed and directed the first comprehensive curriculum and degree plan for students seeking occupational competency as tennis-teaching pro-managers. During his tenure, the unique program attracted over five hundred students from over 35 states and 25 countries. The program fostered the development of similar programs around the world and Dennis Van der Meer, who will be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame this weekend, called Tennis Tech the "Harvard of Tennis Teaching."
