Lydia Jenkins Musco's work has been exhibited in galleries and public spaces throughout the United States. With an MFA from Boston University and a BA from Bennington College, her artistic practice has been shaped by international experiences, including stone carving studies in Italy and participation in art symposia in Norway, South Korea, and China. Musco's work has earned recognition through awards including two Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grants, a Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA Grant, and an Edward F. Albee Residency Fellowship, among others. Her work has been featured in exhibitions including the 43rd Annual Peace Exhibition in Nagasaki, Japan, the International Print Center in New York, and numerous outdoor sculpture exhibitions nationwide. Musco has contributed to the art community through academic roles, serving as a lecturer in sculpture at Boston University and a visiting assistant professor at Davidson College. Musco lives and works in Royalston, Massachusetts. "I interpret the world into a vocabulary of objects with weight and mass that can be viewed from all sides, that help me explore the connections and intersections of elements. Basic construction materials like concrete and wood — ubiquitous and often used in humble ways we take for granted — offer me a path to honesty through their fundamental simplicity. Two groups of work are currently in progress, Logarithmus and Unconformity. The Unconformity series began as an investigation into perception and place, a reflection of the landscape of the woodlands of Massachusetts. In geology, an unconformity refers to a break in time, a boundary between rocks caused by erosion or a pause in sediment accumulation. Investigating the environmental changes accumulating in the landscape over the course of a year, each sculpture is an unconformity, a break in time, capturing a moment, holding it still, and documenting the changing color, light, and forms of a single place. The Logarithmus series explores navigation, inspired by the Chip Log, an early nautical instrument for gauging speed. The form of these sculptures is derived from the geometry of a circle's quadrant. The resulting shape, somewhat vulnerable due to its accessible interior, becomes an exploration of pathfinding, with all its inherent hope and uncertainties. With the guarantee of detours and missteps, my goal is to keep moving forward with curiosity. These objects are built from the ground up, echoing the process of memory or landscape formation. Like geological strata, each layer both influences and is influenced by those adjacent to it, above and below, side by side. Bound by gravity only, they are built in movable sections that can be dismantled and reconstructed. Each reassembly tells a new story, revealing how intention and environment reshape our understanding, making the familiar strange and the static dynamic." Gail Spaien (b. 1958, Hartford, Connecticut) is an American artist and educator based in Maine. Her studio practice centers around the idea that a painting is a site of connection; an object that transmits emotion from one person to another. She is of a lineage of artists who think craft and beauty shape and build a more relational world. Spaien has been the recipient of numerous fellowships, including the Ucross Foundation (2024), Varda Artist Residency Program, Djerassi Foundation Resident Artists Program, Millay Colony for the Arts, and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. She has received grant funding from the Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed Foundation, the Maine Arts Commission, and the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation. Her work has been featured in solo exhibitions, including Taymour Grahne Projects, Dubai, UAE(2025); Mrs. Gallery, NY (2025); Nancy Margolis Gallery, NY; Taymour Grahne Projects, London, UK; Ogunquit Museum of American Art, Ogunquit, ME; Ellen Miller Gallery, Boston, MA; and Colby College Museum of Art, Waterville, ME. "Inspired by my geographic location and the landscape that surrounds me, the images in my paintings are of observed and imagined places where one can be in relationship with others, the world, and the self. They celebrate the beauty of everyday acts and the quiet rhythms of daily life. They are compact reductions of lived experiences and permeable arenas of contemplation. The way I make my work is a performance of slowness. Created through repetitive handcraft, marked by decorative patterning, flattened space, and subtly skewed perspectives, my paintings reflect the intimacy of their making. Blending still life with landscape, often depicting a unification between the interior and exterior, spectators of my paintings become inhabitants of a world in slower motion. Composing an idealized counterpoint, I suggest that slowness and attention to the rhythms of an ordinary day is a form of quiet resistance and renewal. My source material ranges from the animated movies of Hayao Miyazaki and Walt Disney to the symbolism of Dutch Still Life paintings. I reference quilts, samplers, mourning paintings, Japanese embroidery, early American wooden furniture, wooden boats, and the architecture of simple cottages. The meditative and precise quality of paint-by-numbers, which I did as a child, also informs my work, as well as my admiration of early American folk artists, the Pattern and Decoration movement, Intimism and the ancient artists of Ukiyo-e. My paintings are places, and I approach them as such. As a painter, I turn my back on the external world and enter the world of the painting. I hope a viewer might do that too. Gwen Strahle is a painter living and working in northeast CT. She teaches at the Rhode Island School of Design. She shows her work at Nancy Devine Gallery in RI. Strahle has received several awards including the Connecticut Artist Fellowship, the Purchase Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Guggenheim Fellowship, and an Honorarium from the Drawing Center. Strahle earned her MFA from Yale University in 1983. "I have been making paintings of objects arranged on my studio table for over forty years. Many of the objects in my work have been with me for the entirety of that time. The objects are painted both from life and from memory: bud vases, shells, pitchers, and glasses. Each of these objects is a kind of vessel, and I often think about what is inside of an object- the fullness of something empty in appearance. The objects are personified in the paintings, and I have become emotionally invested in them; they are part of my family. Over the years, they have changed and aged with me as I paint them into each image. I have created a hierarchy of icons using these familiar objects that can grow and change depending on their arrangement from one painting to the next. That dynamic relationship between objects is important to me. The covered table under the set-up serves as the canvas, or as the painting itself. Its flat surface is raised up for the viewer, with the malleability of a blank slate that allows objects to emerge from and be pushed back into the surface of the table—like a garden bed. It represents the painted world in which my objects can exist. Twenty years ago, I began to add my own silhouette to the paintings, which has recently turned into a shadow, and it presides over the still-life, and is in turn embraced by it. It made sense for that figure to be my own body, or my own shadow, as I am the one experiencing my relationship to the still-life, with these objects. This transparent form can dissolve across the objects and the table. My process involves moving the objects around the image, eliminating and adding as I work through each painting. My paintings come together slowly, sometimes over the course of months or years before I find resolution in the composition. In this episode, I touch on mystery in art—the space between knowing and not knowing that drives us to create and share Philip Guston's essay "Faith, Hope, and Impossibility". Faith, Hope, and Impossibility- Philip Guston "There are so many things in the world—in the cities—so much to see. Does art need to represent this variety and contribute to its proliferation? Can art be that free? The difficulties begin when you understand what it is that the soul will not permit the hand to make. To paint is always to start at the beginning again, yet being unable to avoid the familiar arguments about what you see yourself painting. The canvas you are working on modifies the previous ones in an unending, baffling chain which never seems to finish. (What a sympathy is demanded of the viewer! He is asked to "see" the future links.) For me the most relevant question and perhaps the only one is, "When are you finished?" When do you stop? Or rather, why stop at all? But you have to rest somewhere. Of course you can stay on one surface all your life, like Balzac's Frenhofer. And all your life's work can be seen as one picture—but that is merely "true." There are places where you pause.Thus it might be argued that when a painting is "finished," it is a compromise. But the conditions under which the compromise is made are what matters. Decisions to settle anywhere are intolerable. But you feel as you go on working that unless painting proves its right to exist by being critical and self-judging, it has no reason to exist at all—or is not even possible. The canvas is a court where the artist is prosecutor, defendant, jury, and judge. Art without a trial disappears at a glance: it is too primitive or hopeful, or mere notions, or simply startling, or just another means to make life bearable. You cannot settle out of court. You are faced with what seems like an impossibility—fixing an image which you can tolerate. What can be Where? Erasures and destructions, criticisms and judgments of one's acts, even as they force change in oneself, are still preparations merely reflecting the mind's will and movement. There is a burden here, and it is the weight of the familiar. Yet this is the material of a working which from time to time needs to see itself; even though it is reluctant to appear. To will a new form is inacceptable, because will builds distortion. Desire, too, is incomplete and arbitrary. These strategies, however intimate they might become, must especially be removed to clear the way for something else—a condition somewhat unclear, but which in retrospect becomes a very precise act. This "thing" is recognized only as it comes into existence. It resists analysis—and probably this is as it should be. Possibly the moral is that art cannot and should not be made. All these troubles revolve around the irritable mutual dependence of life and art—with their need and contempt for one another. Of necessity, to create is a temporary state and cannot be possessed, because you learn and relearn that it is the lie and mask of Art and, too, its mortification, which promise a continuity. There are twenty crucial minutes in the evolution of each of my paintings. The closer I get to that time—those twenty minutes—the more intensely subjective I become—but the more objective, too. Your eye gets sharper; you become continuously more and more critical.There is no measure I can hold on to except this scant half-hour of making. One of the great mysteries about the past is that such masters as Mantegna were able to sustain this emotion for a year. The problem, of course, is far more complex that mere duration of "inspiration." There were pre-images in the fifteenth century, foreknowledge of what was going to be brought into existence. Maybe my pre-image is unknown to me, but today it is impossible to act as if pre-imaging is possible. Many works of the past (and of the present) complete what they announce they are going to do, to our increasing boredom. Certain others plague me because I cannot follow their intentions. I can tell at a glance what Fabritius is doing, but I am spending my life trying to find out what Rembrandt was up to. I have a studio in the country—in the woods—but my paintings look more real to me than what is outdoors. You walk outside; the rocks are inert; even the clouds are inert. It makes me feel a little better. But I do have faith that it is possible to make a living thing, not a diagram of what I have been thinking: to posit with paint something living, something that changes each day. Everyone destroys marvelous paintings. Five years ago you wiped out what you are about to start tomorrow. Where do you put a form? It will move all around, bellow out and shrink, and sometimes it winds up where it was in the first place. But at the end it feels different, and it had to make the voyage. I am a moralist and cannot accept what has not been paid for, or a form that has not been lived through. Frustration is one of the great things in art; satisfaction is nothing.Two artists always fascinate me—Piero della Francesca and Rembrandt. I am fixed on those two and their insoluble opposition. Piero is the ideal painter: he pursued abstraction, some kind of fantastic, metaphysical , perfect organism. In Rembrandt, the plane of art is removed. It is not a painting, but a real person—a substitute, a golem. He is really the only painter in the world! Certain artists do something and new emotion is brought into the world; its real meaning lies outside of history and the chains of causality. Human consciousness moves, but it is not a leap: it is one inch. One inch is a small jump, but that jump is everything. You go way out and then you have to come back—to see if you can move that inch. I do not think of modern art as Modern Art. The problem started long ago, and the question is: Can there be any art at all? Maybe this is the content of modern art." Madge Evers (b. 1961, Norwalk, CT) explores the transformative cycles of dormancy, decay, and ecstatic growth in plant life. Her work combines alternative photography, mushroom spores, and painting to depict landscape details and imagined flora. Evers earned a BA from Suffolk University in Boston and an MA from the University of Rhode Island. In 2024, she curated and exhibited in the group show *Biomorph* at Split Level Gallery (Northampton, MA) and presented her third solo show at ECA Gallery (Easthampton, MA). Recent artist residencies include Chautauqua Arts (2024), Cill Rialaig (Kerry, Ireland, 2023), Oak Spring Garden Foundation (Upperville, VA, 2023), Kinney Center for Interdisciplinary Renaissance Studies at UMass Amherst (2022), and Eastern Frontier Educational Foundation (Jonesport, ME, 2022). Evers was a Massachusetts Cultural Council Artist Fellowship Finalist in Photography (2021) and made Photolucida Critical Mass top 200 (2019). Evers currently lives and works in western Massachusetts. Her book about the cyanotype process will be published by Storey in 2026. "My work features native and introduced flora foraged from different landscapes, along with imagined botanical elements. Working primarily on paper, I use various materials and processes, including mushroom spores, cyanotype, painting, collage, and book making. I began adapting and experimenting with mushroom spore prints as an art medium in 2015. The cyanotype—an alternative photographic process pioneered by botanist Anna Atkins in 1843 —provides flexibility for revision and repair in my practice. Spore printing and cyanotype photograms connect me to the cyclical transformations of plant life: growth, decay, and dormancy. I believe nature's interdependent systems offer a restorative framework for humans, and possibly humanity." Joe Wardwell is currently a Professor of Painting at Brandeis University (Waltham, MA) and is the founder the Brandeis-in-Siena program. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Art History, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the University of Washington (Seattle, WA). He received a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Boston University (Boston, MA). Currently on view, Wardwell has a large-scale wall drawing, "Hello America: 40 Hits from the 50 States," commissioned for the renovation of building 6 at MASS MoCA in North Adams, MA. In 2022, he completed his first large scale public art project for the Boston Public Library, Roxbury Branch. Wardwell has also completed large scale installations for the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston, the Ogunquit Museum of American Art, citizenM Hotels, Facebook Inc., and the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters in Norfolk, VA and the Cape Cod Museum of Art. His paintings and drawings have been exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum (Lincoln, MA), the Rollins Museum and the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston, and Wardwell's work is in the permanent collection of each. Wardwell has been a recipient of the Massachusetts Cultural Council Grant for Painting and was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award from the School of Creative Arts at Boston University. In addition to numerous group exhibitions throughout the region, Wardwell has held solo exhibitions in New York, New Haven, Boston, Seattle, and Montreal. Susan Klein is an artist living in Charleston, SC. Klein is a 2020-2021 recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. Sam King has exhibited at galleries, artist-run spaces, and universities across the country, including The Painting Center (NYC), Unrequited Leisure (Nashville), Manifest Gallery (Cincinnati), Oneoneone Gallery (Chapel Hill), Laconia Gallery (Boston), The Provincial (Kaleva, MI), Living Arts of Tulsa, MIXD (Rogers, AR), the University of North Carolina Greensboro, the University of Tulsa, Lower Columbia College, and Western Connecticut State University. In 2020, King was a resident of Hambidge Center, supported by the Lee and Margaret Echols fellowship for musicians (he records and performs improvisational, microtonal guitar music under the name Untight). In 2019, he curated Shelters, Monuments, featuring the work of artists Whiting Tennis and Sarah Norsworthy, for The Provincial, an artist-run space in Kaleva, MI. With Christopher Lowrance, King co-founded MW Capacity, a website devoted primarily to painting in the Midwest. With Stephanie Pierce, he co-founded Lalaland, a DIY community projects space in Fayetteville, AR, active 2011-2019. He has also been a resident artist at Vermont Studio Center and Ox-Bow School of Art, an affiliated fellow at the American Academy in Rome, and a recipient of the Arkansas Arts Council's Individual Artist Fellowship. His work is held in a number of public and private collections. King earned a Bachelor Fine Arts degree from the University of Tulsa (2003) and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University (2005). He resides in Fayetteville, AR, where he serves as an Associate Director of the University of Arkansas School of Art. "Much of the meaning of my work is embedded in its physicality, process, and composition. I am enamored of the material trappings of painting: not just paint and canvas, but staple-holes, tears, creases, and off-cuts, and at times, the artifacts of digital and hybrid formats. My process is improvisational, and I tend to work on a lot of paintings at once. If a painting is not going well (or it was at one point "finished," and no longer seems sufficiently resolved), I take it off its stretchers, cut it up, and use the pieces to start new works. In this way, a single, failing painting might be the germ of five or ten new ones. By alternatingly reinforcing and transgressing conventions of visual perception, I hope to engage, perhaps even implicate, the viewer in the work. I arrived at this method of making art after years of experimentation and interrogation of painting as a vehicle for communication. I rarely seek out source material, in the sense of a specific painting serving to record a particular scene, moment, or emotion, but also, I think of painting in terms of metaphor and embodiment. My work tends to exist in a suspended, liminal state, like something is there to be recognized, reassembled, or decoded. I can't quite say why I started working this way, but I've indulged a persistent, gnawing instinct to rework old paintings for many years, long before they look like they do now. There is something in them, for me, about the interconnectedness and malleability of our collective and individual experiences, tensions between structure and intuition, and the slipperiness of time, narrative, memory, and interpretation." Taro Takizawa is an artist specializing in printmaking, wall vinyl installations, drawings, and 2D designs. His work blends both Western and Eastern aesthetics, with a deep appreciation for traditional printmaking processes and the art of mark-making. Takizawa is fascinated by the fusion of contemporary studio practices with traditional methods, exploring the boundaries between printmaking and installation art. He earned his BFA with a printmaking emphasis from Central Michigan University and completed his MFA in printmaking at Syracuse University in 2017. Takizawa has exhibited his work both nationally and internationally at prominent venues such as the Fowler-Kellogg Art Center, PARADOX European Fine Art Forum in Poland, ArtPrize 10 at the Grand Rapids Public Museum, LUX Center for the Arts, the China Printmaking Museum, Tyger Tyger Gallery, and Kai Lin Art in Atlanta, GA. Anne Buckwalter is an American painter based in Maine. She was born and raised in Lancaster, PA. She received her BFA from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and her MFA from Maine College of Art and Design. A recipient of a 2020-2021 Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, a 2020 Idea Fund Grant, and a 2016 Joan Mitchell Foundation Emerging Artist Grant, Anne has been an artist-in-residence at the Galveston Artist Residency, Vermont Studio Center, Studios at Mass MoCA, Hewnoaks Artist Colony, and Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. Her exhibition history includes the Portland Museum of Art, Portland, ME; Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia, PA; Boston University Gallery, Boston, MA; The Painting Center, New York, NY, and others. Her paintings have been highlighted in New American Paintings, Juxtapoz, Hyperallergic, and The New York Times, and included in the collections of the Institute of Contemporary Art Miami; Aishti Foundation, Lebanon; Zuzeum, Latvia; X Museum, Beijing; Art Museum of West Virginia, and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Susan Lichtman is a figurative painter of domestic spaces, working out of her home studio in southeastern Massachusetts. She received her undergraduate degree from Brown University and an MFA in Painting from Yale University School of Art. Lichtman has had solo exhibitions at Steven Harvey Fine Arts Projects, NY, NY. (2017, 2024); Rose Art Museum, Waltham, MA (2024); Fahrenheit, Madrid, (2022); Gross McCleaf Gallery, Philadelphia, PA (2018) and the Wilson Museum of Hollins University, Roanoke, VA (2017.) Recent group and two person exhibitions have been at Steven Harvey Fine Arts Project, NY ,NY; Nathalie Karg Gallery, NY, NY; Wege Center for the Arts, Fairfield, IA; Chazen Gallery, Providence, RI; Page Gallery, Camden, ME; and Crosstown Arts, Memphis, TN. Neil Callander is an artist and an educator. Born in Louisville KY, Neil earned a BFA from Indiana University (2003) and an MFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University (2006). In 2005 he received a full fellowship to be a resident at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. After graduate school Neil worked as a painter for the artist Jeff Koons in his New York studio. In 2007 Neil and family left New York City to pursue careers as artists and academics. This decision has offered a tour of the South with time spent in Louisville KY, Starkville MS, and Tuscaloosa AL. Neil and his wife Adrienne are currently professors of Art at the University of Arkansas and live in a household of makers, dogs, and sheep on three acres in Fayetteville AR. Neil has exhibited widely including solo exhibitions at Goose Barnacle (Brooklyn NY), Studio Break Gallery (West Chicago IL), Bowling Green State University (OH), MANIFEST Gallery and Drawing Center (Cincinnati OH), Elon University (NC) and The Kentucky School of Art (Louisville). Group exhibitions include MANIFEST Gallery and Drawing Center (Cincinnati OH), The Huntsville Museum of Art (AL), The Mississippi Museum of Art (Jackson), The New Gallery of Modern Art (Charlotte NC), First Street Gallery (NYC), Washington Art Association (CT) and many others. He has presented on his work and practice at institutes of higher learning including Boston University, UMass Dartmouth, Arkansas State University, and the University of Mississippi. He is a member of ZEUXIS (an association of still life painters based in NYC), and SECAC whose conferences he regularly attends. Recent creative endeavors include participation in Art Week (July 2022) at the fabled family home of painter Fairfield Porter on Great Spruce Head Island in Maine. Neil returned to the island in 2024 and will again in 2025 to facilitate a painting retreat he developed. "Cinema is the king of story-telling. Photography is a much more efficient form of documentation. Music is superior at catharsis. Television and the Internet own propaganda. That leaves painting the domains of materiality and ambiguity. I pack a painting with cultural and personal references and work toward an image that is provocative yet conceptually flexible. As more is added the compositions grow thicker, tighter, and more refined over time – like the tangle of a garden in late summer. The act of viewing my paintings is an unlocking of these internal relationships. Leah Triplett is a curator and writer, currently serving as the Director of Exhibitions and Contemporary Curatorial Initiatives at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA). Her writing has appeared in ArtAsiaPacific, ArtNet News, Sculpture, Public Art Dialogue, Flash Art, Hyperallergic, The Brooklyn Rail, and others. Hillary Waters Fayle is an artist and Assistant Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she directs the fiber/textile program. She has taught embroidery and textile workshops around the world and is an alumna of the Oak Spring Garden Foundation's Artist Residency Program. Her work is in the permanent collections of the AKG Museum in Buffalo, NY, Grace Farms Foundation in New Canaan, CT, the United States Embassy to Sri Lanka, Colombo, the Kalmthout Arboretum & Botanical Gardens in Belgium and is on view at the US Embassies in Algiers, Algeria and Dhaka, Bangladesh. Margaret Jacobs, Akwesasne Mohawk, is an artist, educator and independent curator. A metalsmith who creates fabricated steel sculpture and powdercoated, one-of-a-kind jewelry, her work reflects on kinship to the natural world referencing cultural, historical and personal narratives while exploring the lines of contemporary craft and fine art objects. Overall, her life has been greatly influenced by rural living and her interest in object making stems from her youth in Northern New York and a constant respect for creating, repairing, refinishing and re-making objects that were vital to survival. Her artistic process involves steel fabrication techniques that intermingle traditional blacksmithing tools and techniques--primarily forging and hot forming with a forge--with more present day metalworking fabrication processes. This is a unique process that makes the steel feel alive and organic. Jacobs is a 2024 Teaching Artist Cohort and Rural and Traditional Fellowship recipient; a 2024 Native Arts Fellowship through the NMAI Smithsonian; a 2023 Independent Curators International (ICI) Curatorial Research Fellow and a 2019 recipient of the Artist in Business Leadership Award through the First Peoples Fund. She has participated in several artist residencies including at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Sante Fe, NM and Franconia Sculpture Park in Shafer, MN. Recent exhibitions include solo-shows at the Boise Art Museum in Idaho; Burlington City Arts in Vermont; and Ma's House in Southampton, NY. Jacobs attended Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH where she graduated with high honors for her thesis work and received the Perspectives on Design (POD) award. Christine Garvey is an artist, coach, and the founder of A Mighty Practice. During his tenure there he and his wife, Lois Jubeck, built Chautauqua into one of the most respected summer art programs in America (including the Chautauqua School of Art, establishing and building the Fowler-Kellogg and Strohl Art Centers, and expanding the Chautauqua Visual Arts Lecture series). Previously he taught for ten years at the New York Studio School in Greenwich Village, where he also served as Program Director for six years. In 2019 Kimes and his wife, Lois Jubeck, established the ACI International Artists, Writers and Scholars Residency program in a 500 year old complex in Corciano, Italy. He continues to serve as Artistic Director there. He is also the Senior Professor in the Visual Arts at American University in Washington, DC, where he served as head of the studio art program for 19 of the past 35 years (and department chair for 11 years). He conceived of and then led this program in a successful campaign raising funds to design and build Washington's 130,000 square foot Katzen Arts Center and museum. Additionally, Kimes is a frequent contributor to Art Lantern/New Art Examiner which currently has editorial staff in New York City, DC, Toronto, Detroit, UK, Germany, Italy, France, Singapore, Hong Kong and other locations internationally. Kimes has been a guest artist at schools and universities throughout the United States, including Bard, Carnegie-Mellon, Cleveland Institute of Art, Cooper Union, Dartmouth, UC Davis, Harvard, Parsons, University of Pennsylvania, Syracuse University, and many others, as well as academies and universities in Rome, Umbria, Florence, Mexico, Germany and Latvia. "Don Kimes divides his time between Italy, New York and Washington, DC. For more than three decades he has worked extensively in western New York State and Umbria - places he goes to have consecutive thoughts in a world where it is increasingly difficult to have the chance to simply focus. In a 1996 catalogue essay for an exhibition of his work in Munich, he wrote about the relationship between nature and culture saying Italy affords the opportunity to think about culture, nature and the passage of time . . . In the end nature takes everything back. Seven years later a flood destroyed his home and studio. He subsequently wrote about the loss of 30 years years of his life's work: paintings, drawings, most of his photos, filing cabinets full of writing, and more. It felt like the record of my existence had been erased. The house and furnishings seemed incidental by comparison. Nature took everything back. Since recovering from that flood my work based on those destroyed images. Through them color, form and structure combine with nature, time, memory, loss, rebirth and meaning." Eric Fallen grew up in Hamilton Ontario and moved to NYC in 1998 to study playwriting at Brooklyn College. After completing his MFA, he taught for several years at SUNY, CUNY and Pratt. In 2013, he opened Peninsula on Van Brunt Street in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Launched as a project space for young conceptual artists, Peninsula has evolved into a more traditional gallery with a roster comprised of both emerging and established artists. Alex Callender has had solo exhibitions and projects at the Center for the Arts Northeastern University, UMass Contemporary Museum of Art, NYU Gallatin Galleries, Rubber Factory (NY), and Michigan State University's LookOut Gallery. She has held artist residencies with MacDowell Colony, The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, The Drawing Center's Open Session program, Art in Embassies Program, The Vermont Studio Center, the Santa Fe Art Institute, Alice Yard in Trinidad, and DRAWinternational and The BAU Institute in France. Raised in NYC, Callender is currently an Associate Professor of Art at Smith College and lives and works in Western Massachusetts. Alex Callender uses methods of drawings, painting and installation to trace and remap historical materials as a means to explore with both criticality and care, how we might disentangle the interwoven relations of race, gender, and capitalism. Drawing largely from archival sources her work engages the mythic and residual forms of coloniality to think about ways that we orient ourselves to the past; using different visual modes of annotation, hybrid narratives, and speculative storytelling, Callender recontextualizes static (or seemingly fixed) renderings of history to consider their relationship to social forces like scale, time, and memory. Matt Bollinger received his BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and his MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. His work has been exhibited in solo shows in New York, Los Angeles, Dublin, London, and elsewhere. Kim Garcia is an artist working in sculpture, drawing, and painting. Through her 2nd-generation Filipino American lens, her practice explores social dynamics and residual trauma from interpersonal relationships, community structures, and memory. Kim comes from a background in creating collaborative community projects that often employ alternative spaces to explore studio art practices, site-specific collaboration, and museum and exhibition research. She is the founder of The Cold Read, an online critique group and artist collective that engages gestures of care and support through writing and is one of the co-founders of after hours gallery, an art gallery in Los Angeles that hosts two-person exhibitions. Kim is based in Los Angeles and received her BA from UC San Diego and her MFA from UC Irvine. "Through the fusion of reality and fiction, my work emerges from personal encounters, aiming to complicate narratives surrounding second-generation Filipino American histories. I delve into the intricacies of post-colonial identity, exploring themes of intimacy and influence stemming from social interactions. Sculptures form the vibrant outcome of the work, fictionalizing personal events to probe power dynamics, trauma, community structures, and memory. Utilizing materials like medical casting tape, my artworks simultaneously display trauma and symbolize healing. Gradient colors evoke movement, while layered hues express emotional complexity. The sculptures breathe life into color, activating motion and tension. I perceive my work as a form of storytelling, where the malleability of oral narratives inspires a nuanced approach to archiving personal histories. Laura Sallade is an artist living and working in Philadelphia. Sallade earned a Certificate in Sculpture from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 2013 and is completing a coordinated Bachelors of Fine Arts at The University of Pennsylvania. During her time at UPenn, the artist has also worked toward a Certificate in Positive Psychology and an Advanced Certificate in Creative Writing. While completing her degree, the artist has worked at the intersection of painting and glass, exhibiting in New York, Philadelphia, and beyond, creating large scale multi panel works. Her most recent solo exhibitions include Cairn University in 2023 and Massey Klein Gallery in 2022. Notable group exhibitions include the Susquehanna Art Museum, Future Art Fair, and The Woodmere Art Museum. Laura has completed public commissions for Atlantic Aviation Airport, Jefferson Hospital, and The Ritz Carlton, among many others. Recent awards and residencies include The SIM Residency in Iceland, The Pilchuck Glass School Scholarship, and The Nextfab Fellowship. Laura is currently preparing for a two person show at Works on Paper Gallery in Philadelphia. "Without light we can't see matter—inversely, without matter we can't see light. This interdependent relationship is the crux of my practice. I'm interested in colloquial references to light as a fleeting presence—a shadow appears, the sun sets, a beam of light enters the room. In reality, we know that light is the constant and we are the variable—it's our physical world that is shifting, our planet that is rotating, our galaxy that is hurling through space. I observe these paradoxical understandings of the world and emphasize our skewed perception of light by capturing moments of flux. Using glass, silver, and mixed media, I investigate the link between light and matter. Integrating scientific and intuitive processes, I create evocative gestural works that walk the line between image and object. Rather than rendering light, I rely on its interaction with opaque and translucent shapes and textures to capture the ephemeral. Paying homage to the fickleness of memory, I indiscriminately excavate large portions of a composition through hand-cut elimination and rely on suggestive remains." John Paul Kesling (b. 1980, USA) was born and raised in Northeastern Kentucky in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. He received his BFA in Arts from Morehead State University (Morehead, KY, 2003) and spent a summer in Europe studying art history (Summer 2002). He went on to receive his MFA in Painting from The Savannah College of Art and Design (Savannah, GA, 2010). He spent the next six years in Brooklyn, NY immersed in the NYC art scene. In March of 2016, while attending a month-long residency at The Vermont Studio Center he realized how integral time, space, and nature were to his studio practice and in 2016, relocated to Madison, TN, just outside of Nashville. Marc Mitchell holds a M.F.A from Boston University. Rebecca Rutstein is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice bridges art, science and technology. For over twenty years she has created painting, sculpture, interactive installation and public art inspired by the natural world. Her work sheds light on places and processes hidden from view to foster deeper connection in the face of our climate crisis. As an artist-in-residence, Rutstein's collaborations with scientists have taken her around the world including seven expeditions at sea and two deep-sea dives to the ocean floor in the Alvin submersible, supported by the National Science Foundation. Her work with oceanographers, ecologists, microbiologists, molecular scientists and planetary geologists give her a unique perspective and broad view of the interconnectedness of all things in the natural world. A recipient of the Pew Fellowship in the Arts with recognition from the National Endowment for the Arts, her work has been featured on NPR, ABC, NBC, CBS, in the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Huffington Post, Vice & Vogue UK magazines. Rutstein has exhibited both nationally and internationally in over thirty solo shows, and her work can be found in more than forty public collections including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Georgia Museum of Art, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, National Academy of Sciences, US Department of State, US Consulate in Thailand, and Yale University. JAC LAHAV (he/them) is a multi-disciplinary artist, curator, parent, arts writer, children's book author, and community organizer. Born in Jerusalem Israel with Iranian and Polish roots Lahav was raised in the United States and lives in Connecticut. Lahav's work investigates community, belonging, and cultural history through expansive series of paintings and installations. With solo shows at Richmond Art Museum Indiana, Longview MFA Texas, Saginaw Art Museum Michigan, Florence Griswold Museum Connecticut, Lahav's work can be found in multiple public collections including the Jewish Museum Milwaukee, Mount Holyoke Art Museum, Jewish Museum NY among others. Their current exhibition exploring foster care is at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum, New London until December 2023. Lahav also has an active social practice over the past 10 years. Lahav's curatorial projects have been written about in Hyperallergic, New York Times, Gothamist, Artnet, among others. During the pandemic, Lahav expanded this social practice, becoming an advocate for foster parents and helping start the group Public Art For Racial Justice Education (PARJE). Through their community work, Lahav helps facilitate large-scale mural projects, hosts educational artist talks, and runs children's art projects to educate about under-represented narratives and equity in America. Jennifer Combe is a mother, artist, and associate professor of art at The University of Montana. Before shifting to higher education, she taught K12 in Washington State public schools for fifteen years. Her artwork investigates gender, contemporary mothering, and children's development. Her visual work has been exhibited at The Missoula Art Museum, Holter Museum of Art, Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art, The Gift Shop exhibition space at The Henry Art Gallery in Seattle, the NAEA gallery in Virginia, and The Washington State Center for Performing Arts. Her work is featured in the book An Artist and a Mother, published by Demeter Press. Her work in art education spans early childhood education, community arts, and social theory. Her educational work has been featured in The Journal of Social Theory in Art Education, The Journal of the Motherhood Initiative for Research and Community Involvement, The Journal of Cultural Research in Art Education, and Visual Arts Research. She has lectured for The National Art Education Association in New York, Chicago, San Diego, Dallas/Fort Worth and New Orleans. She lectured on mothering and art education in Florence, Italy for The Motherhood Initiative on Research and Community Involvement. She lives outside of Missoula, MT with her family. "My research and artistic work explore cultural constructs around gender and mothering, ability, and schooling. Drawing from autobiography, I locate the essence of an experience and then distill my understanding of that experience into simplified, often geometric, forms. This process helps deconstruct cultural paradigms that complicate interpretation and meaning—ultimately how we perceive ourselves. Working in the studio involves a form of meditation and contemplative translation of experiences and anxieties through the direct process of applying paint or fabric to various surfaces such as glass, panel, linen, or paper. Non-objective abstraction allows an ambient space for the ambiguities of memory and the tumult of emotion to be freely realized. Often working in multiples, I process experiences in singular works and then rejoin the simplified forms to make a complex, yet fleeting whole. Suzanne Schireson is an artist based in Providence, Rhode Island. She is the recipient of a Rhode Island State Council on the Arts Fellowship and two Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grants. Her work has been featured in Hyperallergic, The Providence Phoenix and The Boston Globe. Recent solo exhibits include "Inside Room", Tiger Strikes Asteroid GVL (NC), "Aftercare", Eleanor D. Wilson Museum (VA) and "Night Studios", University of New Haven (CT). "My paintings focus on the intersection of caretaking, motherhood, and creative practice. This work began just before the pandemic through conversations with other mothers and caretakers about balancing creative practice (be it writing, music, running or painting) with daily care responsibilities. My images are based on a mother or a caretaker, and I paint a studio for them. Through painting, research, and installation, I continue to analyze and imagine new ways that motherhood and artistic practice contribute to each other. My paintings invent spaces for nocturnal women, working against distraction in marginal hours of the day. These works are on paper due to a material shift that enabled me to paint at home on a smaller scale at the start of the pandemic. I am rediscovering color for myself in these works, finding new networks dictated by the twilight of a fluorescent painting ground. I intend these spaces to be more psychological than physical. They are not about escape; they are about a deep desire to reflect and refuel. My work is inspired by a desire for solitary space, which was so valuable during the pandemic. In quarantine, I occupied more time with those I care for, making flashes of solitude particularly rare. Increasingly, my buildings struggle to hold the figure inside, or the women get to work before the structure is complete. This often leaves an open edge between architecture and landscape, no longer making the studio a fixed place." Born in 1969, Gina Herrera was raised in Chicago and currently resides in California. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art Education from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In the course of her studies, she was deployed overseas in support of several war contingencies with the United States Army. While serving in Iraq, miles of mountainous trash heaps amidst the devastation of combat galvanized a life-long love of nature into an activist's calling. Her art practice evolved to lessen her environmental footprint, and to consciously channel Mother Earth in a spiritual and aesthetic ritual drawing from her personal affinity to nature as well as her Tesuque and Costa Rican heritage. Once her final tour was complete, she obtained her Master of Fine Arts from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Herrera has received fellowships and grants and residencies from The Harpo Foundation/Vermont Studio Center, Virginia Center for the Arts, Hambidge Center, Ox-Bow, Peripheral Arts Foundation, Ruth and Harold Chenven Foundation, Puffin Foundation, Kasini House Artist Lab in conjuction with 516 Arts and the Albuquerque Museum and Self Help Graphics In 2022, she participated in the Conversations in Practice Online Residency at Ox-bow, and received a grant from the Demil Art Fund for Veterans. In 2023, she was a National Endowment for the Humanities Veteran Fellow, participating in Surviving the Long Wars 2023 Veteran's Art Summit, where her work was on display at the Chicago Cultural Center. Most recently, she was awarded the California Arts Council Established Artists Grant. She is currently creating and exhibiting work in galleries around the country, as well as exploring avenues for creating larger scale permanent public art projects, to bring her message of environmental mindfulness to even more people. Her first temporary public art installation was in residence at the Valencia Town Center in Santa Clarita, CA for the first four months of 2016, and from 2017-2019 an installation was on display at the South Bend Museum in South Bend, Indiana. In 2022, her work was featured on an episode of Bel-Air on the Peacock Network. Herrera's dedication to service extends to all aspects of her professional life – from her almost 25 years in the United States Military to educating and inspiring the next generation as an art teacher at Arvin High School and adjunct professor at Bakersfield College. "As an artist of Native American (Tesuque Pueblo) and Costa Rican heritage, I embark on a spiritual journey of self-knowledge and reflection on the planet's uncertain future. Through my art, I utilize natural materials and organic forms, such as branches, rocks, cocoons, and nests, as a juxtaposition to industrialization and environmental damage, symbolizing the somatic process of creation. Drawing from my experiences during my 25 years in the Armed Forces, where I witnessed the long-term effects of conflict and war, including the large-scale abandonment of ruined machinery by the military, I question my own practices and environmental impact. My artistic practice is deeply informed by my passion for environmental justice and involves spiritual and aesthetic rituals to honor Mother Earth. I engineer unexpected assemblages using metals and found materials, repurposing salvaged materials like plastics, fabrics, jewelry, domestic tools, bottle caps, and military insignia. The resulting sculptures are human-like yet mysterious and fluid, reminiscent of calligraphy or hieroglyphics. Dark humor and violent beauty are juxtaposed with a post-apocalyptic industrial energy through techniques such as welding, powder-coating, and plasma cutting. Like a scavenger, I play an active role in removing garbage from the landscape, preventing further damage. My artistic process is intuitive, letting the forms reveal themselves. Through my art, I aim to awaken individual and societal consciousness, examining and healing our relationship with Mother Earth. Devin Howell Curry earned a Bachelor's degree in Anthropology from Florida Atlantic University (FAU). She received her MFA in Painting at the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma. She participated in the intensive program at Mount Gretna School of Art in 2016 and was also selected as a Four Pillars Artist in 2019. Her work has been exhibited nationally, including New York City, Richmond, VA, Lancaster, PA, Tulsa, OK, Cambridge, and Boston, MA. In 2019 Devin was featured in New American Paintings, #141 MFA Annual. She currently works as an associate faculty member at Post University in Waterbury, CT. She lives in Fredericksburg, Virginia, with her husband and son. "My still life paintings incorporate both recorded observation and invention. The arrangements consist of objects that carry personal meaning: ceramic pieces made by my great grandmother, trinkets that belonged to my grandmother, and books of women artists I feel a connection with. I often add a self-portrait in the work, placing myself within the same space of the women I reference. I am interested in lineage (both biological and artistic), the connection between women, and the objects we keep to remember the women who came before us. While I do think of the work as possessing a narrative, I also see it as an attempt to chronicle what is lost, a mapping process, a charting of both spatial proximity and what can never truly be known." Jordan Buschur is an artist, educator, and curator based in Toledo, Ohio. Her paintings focus on collections of objects ranging from stacked books to interiors of drawers, all united by a system of value based on mystery, sentimentality, and a matriarchal connection. Buschur received an M.F.A. in Painting from Brooklyn College, the City University of New York. Her work has been shown in numerous locations, including exhibitions with the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts (Grand Rapids, MI), Center for Book Arts (NYC), and Field Projects (NYC). She participated in residencies at the Wassaic Project, Chashama North, the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts, and the Vermont Studio Center. Awards include the Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award and the Kimmel Foundation Artist Award. Her work has been featured in print in New American Paintings and UPPERCASE Magazine, and online with The Jealous Curator, Young Space, and BOOOOOOOM, among many others. She is a co-founder of Co-Worker Gallery and has curated exhibitions at Cuchifritos Gallery + Project Space (NYC), Spring/Break Art Show (NYC), and the Neon Heater (Findlay, Ohio). Buschur was the Director of the Eisentrager-Howard Gallery at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln and currently teaches drawing at the University of Toledo. "My paintings imply a human presence through depictions of accumulated collections. Contents of desk drawers, stacks of books, packed boxes, and objects on display, are united by systems of value shaped by mystery, sentimentality, and the matriarchal connection. Each painting focuses on the oscillation between personal resonance and public view, reality and invention, fixed meaning and open interpretation. I'm interested in the assignment of non-monetary significance onto objects as an inherently interior and idiosyncratic act. In this way, the paintings are portraits as I meditate on the details (both mundane and magical) of the accumulated stuff of friends and family (and my own things too). Simultaneously, the collections point towards the material weight of modern life, the anxiety of consumption, and the endgame of anonymous personal effects. Looking through the lens of inheritance, accumulations of sentimental objects can link to ancestors, while also becoming a burden of junk. A well loved thing, so deeply felt by one, shapeshifts in meaning when passed to a new owner and generation." Kamal X is a self-taught documentary photographer currently based in Brooklyn, New York. Photography found Kamal in 2015, after deciding to quit everything to travel the world in honor of his best friend who passed away due to colon cancer. A hard truth that serves as a major influence in his creative style, which is rooted in telling stories that showcase the hidden truths of humanity that are often misunderstood or overlooked. Kamal's covering of the 2020 Black Lives Matter Protests of Oakland, CA and Washington D.C. granted him the opportunity to be featured in the New York Times. Deciding to mold those images into a mini-series entitled The Beautiful: Oakland to D.C., he won 2nd place in Lensculture's Black & White Photography Awards. More recently, Kamal was featured in Apple's "Hometown" campaign which highlighted black photographers across America. Lastly, in 2021 Kamal self-published his debut photography book, A Quest Supreme, which documents 5 years of traveling to over 40 countries in search of inner peace. "I am a self-made photographer that strives to push my limits to create images that evoke emotion and honesty. Karen Lederer received her BFA in Printmaking and Drawing from Washington University in St. Louis in 2008 and an MFA in Printmaking from Rhode Island School of Design in 2012. She has been an artist in residence at Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop, Lower East Side Printshop, and the Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program. Lederer has presented her work in solo exhibitions at Morgan Lehman Gallery, Cheymore Gallery, One River School, Guilford College Art Gallery, Tennis Elbow at The Journal Gallery, Grant Wahlquist Gallery, and Field Projects. She has participated in many group exhibitions, most recently at Morgan Lehman Gallery, Deanna Evans Projects, Dinner Gallery, Cristea Roberts Gallery, and Hashimoto Contemporary. "Trained to be a printmaker, Karen Lederer brings monoprinting techniques into a contemporary painting practice. She offsets inked plates onto the surface of her artwork and then defines the rest of the image with paint. Both flat and rendered, the work conveys a spatial disorientation that denies stability. By mixing diverse processes in each piece, she creates environments that are at once constructed and artificial, yet private and personal. Lederer invites the viewer into domestic scenes filled with patterns, color and references to her life and art history. In a moment where people live simultaneously in the physical world and online, her paintings evoke the strange filter through which we see much of our reality." Stephanie Pierce's paintings explore relationships between light, time, and perception as it is reconsidered over time. Stephanie's work has been exhibited at The Henry Art Gallery, Seattle; The Staten Island Museum, NY; and Asheville Art Museum, NC. Her work is represented by Jupiter Contemporary in Miami, Alpha Gallery in Boston and Steven Harvey Fine Art Projects in NYC. Stephanie received a Peter S. Reed Foundation Grant in 2018 and a Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant in 2014. Her work has been published in the New Yorker Magazine, Harper's Magazine, and is included in the collections of William Dreyfus, and Joan and Roger Sonnabend among others. Stephanie's upcoming solo exhibition, Simple Pleasures, will be at Jupiter Contemporary, Miami, in October 2023. Stephanie is an Assistant Professor of Painting at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. I am a huge advocate for inclusive communities as essential for our growth. In this episode, I share three reasons community is vital and two ways to build your community. I also share about my personal experience at Chautauqua as a student and how I am thrilled to be the new Artistic Director of Chautauqua Visual Arts. First off, community is a source of comfort for artists. The creative journey can be isolating, with long hours spent working alone. In a community, you find others who understand and can support you through the tough times. Secondly, being part of a creative group means you're constantly learning. Other artists have their unique skills and insights, and when you share ideas, everyone benefits. Not only do we get to learn about new mediums, but we also can share our life experiences. Lastly, communities open doors to opportunities and fun. Collaborations and projects often emerge from these connections, broadening your artistic horizons and bringing joy to your work. LaiSun Keane is a contemporary art gallery located at Sowa Art District in Boston with a focus on providing a platform for non-mainstream voices. The gallery was born in the Covid19 pandemic so it has a strong focus on producing online content and new ways of art presentation and art sales through price transparency. Our stable of artists consists of both local and International artists, and we mount eight to nine virtual and in-person exhibitions annually. American born painter Mike Ousley paints a direct commentary on Appalachian life and folk traditions, though their simplicity belies their depth. Ousley has painted since childhood, and though trained (MFA, University of Cincinnati), he foils Western European traditions with the folk style of his youth. Having grown up in a small coal town in Southeastern Kentucky listening to stories told by friends and family, he credits the visionary artists and rich heritage of the region as his primary influence. Recent exhibitions include Nine Lives at Fortnight Institute, NY; From These Hills at the William King Museum of Art, VA, curated by Michael Rooks; and, Something on the Wind at Morehead State University, Morehead, KY. His work was featured in ArtMaze Magazine Issue 22, selected by Fabiola Alondra and Jane Harmon. Ousley has been a resident at the Huntington Museum of Art, studying with Alfred Leslie; Arc of Appalachia; and, North Mountain. Jenna Ferrey is a gallerist who founded Trotter&Sholer Gallery in 2020. She holds a PhD focused on multiculturalism and religious diversity from the University of Calgary and a Masters Degree in Art Business from Sotheby's Institute of Art. Ferrey's professional experience spans the energy industry, non-profit work with the United Nations in India, and fine art galleries in Manhattan. Ferrey is the proud parent to a delightful Norfolk Terrier named Birdie, a little dog who guards the gallery's treasures. Roxanne Swentzell was born in 1962 in Taos New Mexico. She is a member of the Native American Tribe, Santa Clara Pueblo. Growing up within an artist family allowed Roxanne to naturally take up her mother's clay and start sculpting at a very early age. Due to a speech impediment as a child, Swentzell found that she could sculpt what she was feeling in clay and communicate in this manner. She continued speaking through clay even after she learned to talk in words. In high school, Swentzell was allowed to go to the Institute of American Indian Arts for classes and had her first one person show at age 17. She went on to the Portland Museum Art School. In 2003, Roxanne opened The Roxanne Swentzell Tower Gallery in Pojoaque New Mexico. In 2015, Roxanne Swentzell was given an Honorary Doctorate Degree from the Institute of American Indian Arts. Swentzell has shown throughout the world and has permanent pieces in the National Museum of the American Indian Smithsonian D.C., British Art Museum, Museum of Wellington, NZ, The Heard Museum in AZ, Denver Art Museum, and the Santa fe Convention Center. She has won many awards at the Santa Fe Indian Market and Heard Museum Art Guild, along with being given the New Mexico Governor's Award for excellence in the Arts, and becoming a Native Treasure. Roxanne continues to create artwork and run a non-profit, Flowering Tree Permaculture Institute, working to inspire and nurture communities based on indigenous ways of knowing. Holly Wong lives and works in San Francisco, California. She was educated at the San Francisco Art Institute where she graduated with a Master of Fine Arts with a concentration in New Genres. Holly creates installations and assemblages, integrating non-traditional approaches with more traditional sewing techniques associated with the history of women. She has been awarded visual arts grants from the Integrity: Arts and Culture Association, Barbara Deming Memorial fund, the George Sugarman Foundation, the Puffin Foundation, and a Gerbode Foundation purchase award. She has had over 70 group exhibitions and 10 solo exhibitions. She is represented by SLATE Contemporary Gallery in Oakland, California, ELLIO Fine Art Gallery in Houston, TX, and is a member of A.I.R. Gallery in Brooklyn, New York. "My work reclaims the female body and bears witness to the spirit. I create fiber and drawing based installations, assemblages and works on paper to remember my mother whom I lost to alcoholism and domestic violence. These works range in size from intimate pieces to larger immersive works. I use a variety of fabric and flexible drawing surfaces as my medium, applying the skills passed down to me from my mother who was a talented seamstress. The sexual violence we both experienced in our lives led to a self-loathing of my body, cultivating the anorexia and mental illness I struggled with as a young woman. Now, I stitch and draw as a journey towards wholeness, both for myself and for my mother's memory. I started to work with fiber installation in 2017. I became attracted to working with light, reflective, transparent fabrics because it reminds me of the permeable separation between the living and the dead. In my recent series "quilt suspensions," I use a flat felled seam technique with transparent fabric. I combine these ephemeral materials with LED strip lighting and diffusion film as a proxy for my mother's spirit. The layers of pieced fabric are suspended over this light-spirit as a shroud or mourning cloth. Inspired by Chinese funeral customs, the quilt layers become burial blankets that are offered by the children of the deceased and layered upon their loved ones. A major throughline in my work is the wound or scar and the power of taking back the night by healing the scar. Creating works of beauty in brokenness is my highest act of resistance." This week, The Works member and artist Nicole Lau is joining me to talk about her journey breaking through her mental health struggles to create a thriving professional art practice. Nicole Lau (b.1992) is a Canada-born Chinese artist currently living and working in Vancouver, British Columbia. As an early career artist established in 2021, Nicole works between Chinese brush and Western oil painting techniques, heavily influenced by her mentors. She is a grant recipient of the 2022 Research and Creation award and 2022 Professional Development award through The Canada Council for the Arts. In 2022, Lau held her solo exhibition "Home Kong" at Matchstick Davie, and participated in a group exhibition titled "Together" at the National Housing Conference in Vancouver, BC. In 2023, Lau will be a part of a group exhibition titled "The Body: Object, Product, Agency" in New York City, NY. Nicole investigates contemporary issues that involve the acculturation of Chinese immigrants, understanding her internal landscape, and celebrating her history and Chinese identity as a Canadian artist. I first saw Mikey Yates work in our 2020 exhibition Drowned Neon Rose and I've been following him ever since. Mikey Yates is Kansas City based painter born in Sulzbach-Rosenberg, Germany. He grew up drawing the various characters that colored his life: Scorpion from Mortal Kombat, Ryu from Street Fighter and Gary Payton from the Sonics. Yates continues this practice today, but instead of strictly rendering fictional characters and sports superstars he paints family members and friends, vivid memoirs of his past, and present day situations. Yates received his BFA from Missouri State University and his MFA from the University of Colorado Boulder. This week, The Works member and artist Emily Pfaff is joining me to talk about her journey as an artist and how the community and support she's gotten from The Works has helped her with her professional practice. Emily Pfaff lives and works in Forest Park, Il. She received her BFA in painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2006. She has worked professionally in numerous areas of the arts and has worked extensively on collaborative commissions for film and television. Her work has been seen on platforms like Netflix, Tru TV, and Funny or Die. In 2022 she created a featured piece for Paul Schrader's film "Master Gardener". Her paintings hang in private collections across the country, in addition to public and corporate spaces, including a resident commission at the Chicago Board of Exchange. Sally Morgan Lehman is the founder and director of Morgan Lehman Gallery, which has been based in Chelsea since 2005. Ms. Lehman has a diverse background in the visual arts, which includes museum education, exhibitions design, state and citywide public art placement, and private and corporate collections management. Ms. Lehman is an active member of Art Table, POWArts and NADA, and has served as a visiting critic and juror at Wave Hill, Guttenberg Arts, the Wassaic Project and the Hunter MFA program among many others. This week I'm sharing the interview I did with Garrett Klein of Massey Klein Gallery. I got a chance to meet with Garrett at the gallery when I was visiting New York City where we chatted about his experience with art and starting the gallery. Jen Dwyer grew up on the West Coast, in the Bay Area, California and currently lives and works on the East Coast, between Connecticut and New York. Her playful ceramic sculptures, paintings and otherworldly installations evoke dreams, fantasy, and the desire to escape to a world of one's own creation. Through her artwork, Dwyer creates a uniquely powerful, caring, and intimate feminine world, underscored by the artist's study of Paleolithic talismans, the decadent Rococo aesthetic, and contemporary girlhood culture and ecofeminism. Dwyer received a BFA in Ceramics, BA in Environmental Studies and a minor in Art History from University of Washington. She finished her MFA in the Spring of 2019 from University of Notre Dame where she received a Full Fellowship in Ceramics with a Gender Studies Minor. Dwyer has partaken in many residencies and fellowships, including the Pottery Center in Jingdezhen, China; fellowship at Wassaic Projects and the Museum of Art and Design Studio Residency. Recent exhibitions include the Spring/Break Art Fair in New York City, Maxon Mills Gallery in Wassaic, the Snite Museum, at Notre Dame, a solo exhibition in Manhattan, NY at Dinner Gallery as well as recent and upcoming group exhibition at Hashimoto Contemporary Gallery, Gaa Gallery and Jeff Marfa Gallery. "The Female Gaze is an alternative way of seeing that represents everyone as a subject and acknowledges that people have their own complicated narratives. With this idea in mind Jen Dwyer constructs fanciful, porcelain vessels and sculptures that merge iconography from prehistoric imagery, (such as the Venus of Willendorf, which was thought to be a self portrait of the artist), with the Rococo Aesthetic, infused with contemporary feminist themes. Dwyer create an amalgamation of ceramic sculpture and oil paintings to examine contemporary socially constructed notions of identity by invoking the female gaze. The Female Gaze, coined by Jill Soloway, was created in response to Laura Mulvey's theorization of "the Male Gaze," which is when cinematic depictions of women are seen as objects of male pleasure. The Female Gaze is an alternative way of seeing; a way of looking/representing that seeks to give everyone agency and make everyone a subject. Rococo art was created in reaction to boredom with the serious baroque style, and instead opted to depict humor, wit, emotion, and whimsy. Characterized by its light-heartedness, the Rococo presents itself at a more intimate scale, often in private spaces. I aim to create other worldly Installations, filled with my ceramic sculptures, to blur the barriers between the private and public, subject and object and self and others."
