Uncle Marv’s Unhealthy Podcast isn’t your typical health show; it’s where real life meets real wellness. Each week, Marvin Bee (aka Uncle Marv) cuts through the noise to challenge what you think is healthy and uncover what actually works for your body, your mind, and your relationships. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by conflicting health advice, this podcast helps you make sense of it all—without the fluff, fads, or guilt. From breaking down trending health headlines to calling out popular myths (yes—even the ones you’ve been told are “good” for you), Uncle Marv keeps it honest, p...

If you’ve ever done all the “right” health things and still felt awful, Jason Yun’s story is going to sound uncomfortably familiar. He was the textbook gym owner: 4:30 am alarms, 5:15 am classes, late‑night sessions, massive smoothies, and bodybuilding nutrition that looked impressive on paper but quietly wrecked his hormones, sleep, and mental health. Behind the scenes, he went from chasing muscle and performance to dealing with a popped back on a deadlift, losing about 70 pounds, spiraling into severe depression, and battling weekly suicidal thoughts while still being “the health guy” for his clients. In our conversation, Jason opens up about napping in his car just to survive the next class, living on expert diet rules and supplements, and still ending up with upside‑down cortisol, wrecked melatonin, and a body that couldn’t keep up. That’s the line where he finally said, “enough” and went all in on circadian rhythm, light, and what he calls Mito hacking. We dig into why late‑night eating crushed his sleep, how sunrise with naked eyes started normalizing his hormones in weeks, and why timing, light, and simple daily rhythms might matter more than your macro spreadsheet or the latest stack. === Chapter 00:23 Introduction 01:45 Sunlight, Sunscreen, and Sunglasses 08:28 Safe Sun Exposure Strategies 12:06 What Is Mito Hacking? 17:43 Skepticism and Bioharmonizing 21:39 The Improvement Warrior Mindset 24:11 Seasonal Eating and Circadian Nutrition 26:51 How Fast Changes Show Up 27:39 Light Over Food and Exercise === Guest: Jason Yun, Improvement Warrior Fitness Website: https://www.improvementwarriorfitness.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jasonyun3010 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/fitnesswithyun === Shout-outs Dr. Jack Kruse, Kruse Longevity Center: https://jackkruse.com/ Ben Greenfield, Ben Greenfield Life: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bengreenfield/ Sarah Kleiner, Sarah Kleiner Wellness: https://www.sarahkleinerwellness.com/ === Resources / Companies / Books / Podcasts The Secret (book): https://amzn.to/4ulEsPE Website: <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.andymstone.sunpositiondemo" re
Magic Barclay spent more than 40 years being the “good patient” who did what she was told, took the pills, and tried to push through the pain, only to be told it was all in her head. In this conversation, she shares how chronic illness, cancer, medical gaslighting, and being quietly dropped from social invitations finally forced her to ask a hard question: what if my body has been right all along and nobody bothered to listen. We dig into how functional medicine helped her stop playing whack‑a‑mole with symptoms and start looking at root causes, including trauma, hormones, and a powerful pathway called PNEI that links your thoughts, nervous system, hormones, and immune system. Magic explains why autoimmune issues are not “your body attacking itself,” why even a paper cut counts as trauma, and how fear keeps us handing our health over to people who never teach us what’s actually happening. If you’ve ever walked out of a doctor’s office with “normal” labs but a body that feels like it’s falling apart, this episode is for you. Greg Lee and I dig into the tech he uses in his Lyme Research and Healing Center, a scanner that works kind of like Star Trek medicine to pick up hidden infections, toxins, brain issues, and gut problems that standard tests miss. We get into why some folks do “everything right” with antibiotics and still crash, and why so many end up asking Google and AI for answers after the medical system shrugs. Greg shares real stories you will not forget. There’s the UK school leader who spent five years treating Lyme, only to find out her biggest problem was candida overgrowth from all those antibiotics, and the woman whose chronic symptoms traced back to tarantula toxins after a beach trip in Florida. We even talk about the college kid with genius-level brains whose memory came back after snorting bee venom under supervision, plus some intense Herxheimer reactions that will make you think twice about “more meds, more often” as a strategy. Greg Lee didn’t leave NASA because he got bored playing with robots in space. He left because his gut was exploding, his brain felt like dial‑up internet, and the meds that were supposed to “fix” him made it worse. Picture running high‑stakes experiments at 2:30 in the morning while wondering if you’re going to sprint out of a meeting to the bathroom again. His doctors told him it was irritable bowel syndrome, gave him a prescription, and sent him on his way… even as the brain fog and anxiety started tanking his work and his sleep. Out of options, Greg followed a colleague’s suggestion and tried acupuncture. Not only did an acupuncturist help calm his gut and change his diet, it cracked open a completely different way of looking at health, energy, and what “root cause” actually means. That path led him out of engineering and into Chinese medicine, subtle energy work, and eventually to running the Lyme Research and Healing Center in Maryland, where he helps people with Lyme, mold, autoimmune issues, and long‑term “what is wrong with me?” symptoms that everyone else shrugs off. This episode is for anyone who has ever counted calories, tried the next “miracle” diet, or gone to bed mad at themselves because of what they ate… or didn’t eat. I talk with registered dietitian and eating disorder specialist Jessica Setnick, who has spent decades in the trenches of those hard conversations, about why so many of us feel like food is running the show and why “I’m fine” usually translates to “feelings I’m not expressing.” We start with that little word fine, move into the awkward “so what do you do” conversations about being a dietitian, and quickly land in the uncomfortable truth that a lot of what we call “healthy” is shaped by culture, social media, government, and marketing long before we ever sit down to eat. Jessica breaks down why there isn’t one “normal” way to eat and why those neat little plate diagrams and public health messages can actually make us feel more broken, not less. She explains how the same tools used to help people with full-blown eating disorders can help the rest of us who are “just trying to eat better” but keep getting stuck in the same cycles of rules, rebellion, and regret. We get into intermittent fasting, processed food fear, and the way people brag about their diets as if food has become their whole personality, and she doesn’t hold back on what’s actually harmful versus what just sounds good on TikTok. In this episode, Dan and I walk through the messy middle that most comeback stories skip: the fear under the jokes, the “get me out of here” note he wrote from his hospital bed, the boredom and grind of rehab, and the second “you’ve got to be kidding me” brain setback that dragged him even lower than the first. He talks openly about fatigue, living with a 75 percent battery, and why he let himself “lay in the suck” for a while before deciding to go all‑in on recovery instead of living like a victim. Dan also shares the simple mindset shifts and routines that keep him going now: his mantra “it’s not what happens to you, but how you respond that matters,” his “chop wood, carry water” daily rhythm, and the four horsemen of motivation that helped him out‑work self‑doubt. We connect his story back to the rest of us who are just wrestling with burnout, health scares, life changes, or one more rough season at work, and Dan lays out a practical, stoic‑inspired way to handle change when the waves keep coming. I’ve talked about it before, but this time I actually followed through and bought a smart ring: the RingConn, not the Oura Ring. We dove into what ancestral (or primal, or paleo) eating actually means. It's not some trendy influencer thing—it's eating the way humans did for hundreds of thousands of years before agriculture came along and convinced us that grass seeds (aka grains) were food. Beverly Meyer is not your typical nutritionist. She's a certified clinical nutritionist and functional health practitioner who's been in the health game since the 1970s. Her whole approach is built around getting to root causes instead of slapping a Band-Aid on symptoms, and she's been preaching blackout bedrooms and mouth taping for 20+ years before it was trendy. We started with sleep apnea because Beverly has it herself, and she's become somewhat of an expert on living with it. The stats are wild: sleep apnea is the number one undiagnosed medical disorder in the United States. One in five adults have it and don't know it. The scary part? You can be a thin, non-snoring person like Beverly and still stop breathing 50 to 100 times a night. Your blood oxygen levels can drop into the 70s, which is absolutely not okay. This episode is part two of my conversation with anti‑diet health and life coach Sherry Shaban, and yes, we’re still poking holes in everything diet culture has been screaming at us for years. This conversation with Sherry Shaban is for anyone who has ever stared at an empty pizza box thinking, “How did we get here again?” while also knowing way too much about carbs, macros, and whatever diet is trending this month. Sherry is an osteopath, strength coach, and self-described science nerd who used to live in what she calls a self-made food prison: counting grams, tracking every bite, and stressing out her family and friends with constantly changing rules about what she would or wouldn’t eat. What I liked about Brian is he's not out here selling some magic diet or begging you to join CrossFit. He's talking about real systems that fit into your actual chaotic life. One of his clients lost 38 pounds in 100 days by walking 10,000 steps a day. That's it. No vegetables. No meal prep Sundays. Just walked and managed his calories. Another guy dropped 13 pounds, got his confidence back, went job hunting, and landed the same position at a different company for 65 grand more a year. We dug into one of the most emotional topics out there: kids, weight, and the mess of shame, blame, and bad advice wrapped around childhood obesity. Dr. Evan Nadler breaks down why obesity is a chronic disease driven heavily by genetics and epigenetics, why kids are not “choosing” this, and why telling them to just move more and eat less is lazy, outdated nonsense that doesn’t work for most adults either. We also got real about BMI as a screening tool, how parental health and pregnancy weight gain affect a child’s long-term risk, and why the body fights to defend its weight even when you’re doing “all the right things.” From GLP‑1 meds like semaglutide to bariatric surgery in teens, Dr. Nadler walks through what’s actually available, what’s approved for kids, why it’s not the “easy way out,” and how early treatment can prevent a lifetime of metabolic damage. Julie has been hunting down chronic pain for almost four decades, and she is not buying the lazy “nothing’s wrong” answer when your scans look fine but you can barely stand up straight. She walks me through how tight muscles pull on joints like someone yanking your hair, why sitting wrecks your lower back, and how she stumbled into this whole thing by accidentally knocking out a woman’s three-week headache on a cruise ship. We also get into her Jules Stroke method, why she ditched traditional sliding-oil massage, and how she ended up treating everyone from bodybuilders and marathoners to symphony musicians and regular office chair warriors. We talk practical stuff too: why your iliacus and other hip flexors might be the real jerks behind your low back pain, how plantar fasciitis is usually a lower leg muscle tantrum, and why rolling a tennis ball under your foot is basically massaging the wrong part of the problem. Julie lays out how her books Treat Yourself to Pain-Free Living and The 15-Minute Back Pain Solution teach you to chase pain back to the actual source, and she explains how she coaches people over Zoom around the world to fix this stuff themselves. This conversation is for anyone who “never bounced back” after COVID and has been told it’s just stress, burnout, or all in their head. Dr. Zeest walks me through how a high-performing physician ended up collapsing in a hospital parking lot, what long COVID actually is, and why fatigue, brain fog, and “just not feeling like yourself” aren’t character flaws or laziness. We talk about the medical side, the emotional crash, and the identity free-fall of going from everyday superhero to someone who has to rest before and after a simple conversation. She also breaks down how she used her critical-care brain on herself: thinking in organ systems, prioritizing symptoms, and building a step-by-step approach when doctors didn’t have answers or treatments. We get into the grief, the guilt of stepping away from work and family roles, the hard conversations at home, and how she rebuilt a different version of her life that’s smaller on paper, but still meaningful, connected, and honest. This part of the conversation dives into the messy, human side of health — not just lab reports and buzzwords. Len explains why he avoided pharmaceuticals after watching his grandfather suffer through stroke after stroke while his family juggled bags of meds and side effects. That early distrust pushed him toward cannabis as his own medicine for ADHD, which later evolved into deep work in genetics, epigenetics, and the endocannabinoid system. Today, his EndoDNA platform lets doctors swab patients, pull blood work, and use an AI called BIOS to generate treatment plans that include pharmaceuticals, supplements, and lifestyle changes tailored to that specific person. We cover hormone testing for women dealing with early perimenopause and rough menopause, men quietly going through andropause, and how personalized dosing can change everything from pellets to GLP‑1 drugs. Len shares how their clinical trials are exploring personalized approaches for conditions like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and autism, and why the real magic is the feedback loop: epigenetic data, bloodwork, and outcomes feeding the AI so treatment gets more and more individualized. We also zoom back out to regular life: the junk we call food, how fake “healthy” processed stuff speeds up aging, why movement and resistance training matter as we get older, and how cutting loose the “energy vampires” in your life might be as important as changing your diet. I sit down with Len May, co‑founder and CEO of EndoDNA, to unpack what our genetics are really telling us about how we eat, handle stress, and respond to our environment. Len explains DNA as an “encoding” that sets up predispositions, while epigenetics, lifestyle, and neurochemistry decide which switches actually get turned on—impacting everything from inflammation and gut issues to cognitive decline. We also touch on how AI is now helping doctors interpret this data, moving from our current “sick care” model to something closer to true preventive healthcare. Len shares examples like the APOE4 gene and Alzheimer’s risk, cortisol’s impact on pain and gut health, and how simple choices around food, supplementation, and therapies can help keep your body closer to balance. This first part ends with a teaser into Len’s personal story—immigrating from Lithuania, getting labeled with ADD, discovering cannabis, and eventually building EndoDNA as a bridge between plant medicine and precision genetics. This episode starts with a question I’ve been asking myself for a while: what if the real problem isn’t just your symptoms, but the way they’re being treated? I sit down with Dr. Kevin Smith, a chiropractor and functional medicine practitioner from the Pittsburgh area, to talk about what happens when you stop settling for “here’s a pill” and start digging into why your body is breaking down. Dr. Smith walks me through how he went from treating back and neck pain to dealing with “weird, mysterious problems” that chiropractic alone couldn’t solve, which pushed him into clinical nutrition, functional blood chemistry, and deeper lab work. He explains, in very straightforward terms, the difference between allopathic care that manages symptoms and functional medicine that looks for hidden root causes behind high blood pressure, thyroid disease, gut issues, chronic fatigue, and more. We also talk about the reality of short primary care visits, the constant “come back later” cycle, and why managing is not the same as curing. === Time Stamps 00:33 What Is Functional Medicine, Really? 04:14 Are We Over‑Medicated as a Society? 05:01 Dr. Kevin Smith’s Path: From Chiropractic to Functional Medicine 08:19 Sorting Out Supplement Confusion (4 Levels of Quality) 11:47 “I Read This on the Internet” – Handling Health Misinformation 17:42 First Steps: Testing, Questionnaires, and Getting Off the Medication Treadmill 21:03 Does Functional Medicine Take Too Long? 23:49 Symptom Management vs Real Root‑Cause Solutions 28:35 Thyroid, Hashimoto’s, and Surprising Warning Signs 30:47 Food, Salt, Sugar, and the Modern Diet Problem 31:19 Free Metabolic Quiz and How to Work with Dr. Smith 33:27 Cheesesteaks, Primanti Bros, and a Little Pittsburgh Flavor 34:03 What Keeps Dr. Smith Excited After 25+ Years 36:09 Entrepreneurs, Energy, and Avoiding Burnout 38:13 Diet Styles, Sleep, and Exercise as You Age 40:26 Uncle Marv’s Own Wake‑Up Call and Why This Show Exists 41:15 Closing Thoughts, Next Steps, and Call to Share the Episode === Guest: Dr. Kevin Smith Website: https://www.metabolicsolutions.net LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kevinsmithdc === Mentioned on the Show Palmer College of Chiropractic: https://www.palmer.edu GNC: https://www.gnc.com Vitamin World: https://www.vitaminworld.com Primanti Br

You’ll also hear why AI chatbots can backfire for people with serious mental health conditions, what a GRAS loophole means for hidden food chemicals, and how biological age, keto, and exercise tie into brain health and blood sugar. === Stories and Links FDA Warns 30 Telehealth Companies Over Off-Label Compounded Ozempic-Style Weight-Loss Drugs Source: https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-warns-30-telehealth-companies-against-illegal-marketing-compounded-glp-1 Over 50 U.S. Medical Schools Pledge to Beef Up Nutrition Training for Future Doctors Source: https://kffhealthnews.org/morning-briefing/friday-march-6-2026/ Researchers Warn AI Chatbots May Reinforce Mental Health Delusions Source: https://fortune.com/2026/03/07/chatbots-ai-psychosis-worsen-delusions-mania-mental-illness-health/ Investigation Finds 100+ Unreviewed Chemicals in U.S. Food Supply Source: https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/investigation-finds-secretly-added-chemicals-050134526.html Biological Age May Predict Stroke and Brain Health Source: https://www.news-medical.net/news/20260305/Improving-biological-age-gap-may-help-protect-long-term-brain-health.aspx Keto Diet Plus Exercise Shows Promise for Blood Sugar Control Source: https://www.nutritioninsight.com/news/keto-exercise-lower-blood-sugar-study.html === MUSIC LICENSE CERTIFICATE: Envato Elements Item Item Title: H

Nancy shares how her marriage, subsequent divorce, and her grandmother’s final days in hospice forced her to confront unhealthy coping, heavy drinking, and the fear of repeating childhood patterns in front of her kids. She talks about her grandmother’s journey from an unschooled girl in El Salvador to a beloved businesswoman and community anchor, and how those roots inspired Nancy to use her voice and multiply the blessings she was given. They also touch on the power of being still (with a nod to Psalms 46:10), the mental side of letting loved ones go, and the quiet suffering that comes from staying in situations just to protect the status quo.Takeaways: Painful seasons (like divorce and grief) can position you to show up more fully for the people who need you most. You may only recognize you were “right where you were supposed to be” after the storm has passed.Staying in a relationship, job, or role just to protect others’ feelings can lead to silent suffering for everyone involved.Unhealthy coping—like heavy drinking—can be a signal that your life feels out of control and something deeper needs to change.Asking “What am I avoiding?” can reveal the exact things keeping you stuck in the wrong situation.Families sometimes need to give loved ones permission to let go at the end of life so they don’t suffer longer than necessary.Being still—rather than constantly distracting yourself—creates space to see what’s really important now.MUSIC LICENSE CERTIFICATE: Envato Elements ItemItem Title: Healthy EatingItem URL: https://elements.envato.com/healthy-eating-VNN4M4PAuthor Username: CrazyTunesLicensee: Marvin BeeRegistered Project Name: Unhealthy PodcastLicense Date: January 3rd, 2026Item License Code: XPFS6HD54W === About the Unhealthy PodcastHosted by Marvin Bee (Uncle Marv), the Unhealthy Podcast dives into real conversations about health, wellness, and everyday habits that impact how we live, work, and age. Nancy shares how being a single mom, starting a business, and caring for her sick grandmother forced her to ask, “What matters most right now?” and to choose capacity over hustle for the sake of her mental health and nervous system. Marv offers his own framework from a Lou Holtz story—WIN: “What’s Important Now”—and explains how that guides his choices when work collides with caring for his mom and other family responsibilities. The conversation becomes a real-time example of prioritizing stress management, emotional health, and boundaries over non-stop productivity.TakeawaysYou can’t take care of everyone else if you never put your own “oxygen mask” on first. It’s okay—and sometimes necessary—to step back from business growth and focus on survival and capacity.“What’s Important Now” is a powerful filter for making decisions when work and family collide.Listening to your body when it demands rest is a crucial health habit.Unresolved grief and fear of loss can keep you stuck in unhealthy partnerships and coping strategies. It’s possible to look back on hard decisions without regret, recognizing that you did the best you could with what you knew.Part of healing is growing your capacity to hold more without collapsing—emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.=== MUSIC LICENSE CERTIFICATE: Envato Elements ItemItem Title: Healthy EatingItem URL: https://elements.envato.com/healthy-eating-VNN4M4PAuthor Username: CrazyTunesLicensee: Marvin BeeRegistered Project Name: Unhealthy PodcastLicense Date: January 3rd, 2026Item License Code: XPFS6HD54W === About the Unhealthy PodcastHosted by Marvin Bee (Uncle Marv), the Unhealthy Podcast dives into real conversations about health, wellness, and everyday habits that impact how we live, work, and age. This episode centers on how connection and community shape both workplace culture and personal wellbeing. Lori Saitz shares how she helps companies use internal podcasts to improve communication and build culture, while also telling her story of moving from digital nomad life to creating a grounded, community-focused life in Charlotte. Gratitude, intentional relationships, and honest storytelling run through the whole conversation, from leadership communication to personal health.Top TakeawaysInternal podcasts act as a modern replacement for company newsletters and sporadic town halls, giving leaders a direct, human way to communicate with employees.Lori’s “core four” focus—culture, communication, connection, and community—guides short, weekly 15‑minute internal episodes that employees can easily consume. These internal shows are especially powerful for midsize companies and distributed teams (remote workers, people in trucks, manufacturing staff) who can’t always attend live meetings.Gratitude and grounding practices can be woven into workplace content, helping people reset before or after stressful meetings and stay more centered.Lori’s own shift from nomading to settling in Charlotte highlights the importance of intentionally building community and creating a “nest” for emotional health.Relationships change as people grow; part of staying healthy and authentic is accepting when certain friendships are no longer aligned.Social connection and a sense of purpose are major contributors to longevity and wellbeing, often outweighing purely nutritional or medical factors.=== MUSIC LICENSE CERTIFICATE: Envato Elements ItemItem Title: Healthy EatingItem URL: https://elements.envato.com/healthy-eating-VNN4M4PAuthor Username: CrazyTunesLicensee: Marvin BeeRegistered Project Name: Unhealthy PodcastLicense Date: January 3rd, 2026Item License Code: XPFS6HD54W === About the Unhealthy PodcastHosted by Marvin Bee (Uncle Marv), the Unhealthy Podcast dives into real conversations about health, wellness, and everyday habits that impact how we live, work, and age. Uncle Marv is back after a whirlwind of tech conferences and client moves, and he’s got a bone to pick with the most persistent health myths out there. In this episode, Marv takes on five big misconceptions that keep us from enjoying food and life—starting with the idea that you have to stop eating certain foods to lose weight. Spoiler: elimination diets are not the answer, and moderation is the real key. He also tackles the myth that organic foods are always healthier, referencing the “Dirty Dozen” and “Clean 15” lists to show that sometimes, organic is just more expensive, not more nutritious. But wait—there’s more. Marv busts the myth that detoxes and cleanses are necessary for health, reminding us that our bodies are already expert detoxers. He challenges the notion that thin equals healthy, emphasizing that well-being is about so much more than body weight. And for anyone who’s ever felt guilty about late-night snacking, Marv sets the record straight: it’s what and how much you eat, not the time of day, that matters most. As a bonus, he touches on gluten-free diets, explaining why they’re only necessary for people with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. === Companies, Products, and Books MentionedYuka App: yuka.ioWebMD - 10 Health Myths Debunkd: https://rebrand.ly/zigstvyHarvard Health - Debunking Common Wellness Myths: https://rebrand.ly/p71sythNational Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases - Myths: https://rebrand.ly/imbv9gpLoyola Medicine - 8 Healthy Eating Myths Debunked: https://rebrand.ly/pg2fvrb=== MUSIC LICENSE CERTIFICATEItem Title: Ads LogoItem URL: https://elements.envato.com/ads-logo-8XLEVX5Author Username: FASSoundsLicensee: Marvin BeeRegistered Project Name: Unhealthy PodcastLicense Date: January 11th, 2025 === About the Unhealthy PodcastHosted by Marvin Bee (Uncle Marv), the Unhealthy Podcast dives into real conversations about health, wellness, and everyday habits that impact how we live, work, and age.
