Paul oversaw production of the Brushie trouts, Terje swords, and was a key player in the development of the Burton custom. And this year the Burton Custom turned 30 and the story behind its development highlights a commitment to progression, of materials, building techniques, art, and the culture of snowboarding. The custom was a catalyst for change and in no small way that change was driven by Paul’s engineering sensibility and his direct communication with some of the best snowboarders in the world at the time including people like Craig Kelly, Bryan Iguchi, Victoria Jealous, and Jason Brown. Paul was also a facilitator at Windell’s summer camp on Mount hood the year I went there 1991. Send us Fan MailPaul Culling was a pro snowboarder in the late 80's and early 90's scoring sponsorship contracts with Gnu, Nitro, and K2 before starting his own snowboard brand, Luxury Snowboards. He was also the first pro on Westbeach outerwear. Paul's entrepreneurial spirit found an outlet in snowboarding first through an innovation for boots, eventually in running the world's first adult snowboard camps on Mt. Seymour, and ultimately through flying around the world with a team of Luxury pros that included Mike Estes and Shin Campos. Eventually Paul joined the "internet" sector of the money market and innovated there. I met him in the early 2000's when he integrating commerce into the Boardroom's website. Send us Fan MailDon Szabo's passing last week sucked. He was a pillar of joyous excitement in the action sports world. Don started his career as professional skateboarder and fell in love with snowboarding in Southern California. His pro model on Nectar snowboards out of San Diego was one of the very first pro models in snowboarding. His pro model on Lamar (all 4 of them) were among the best selling boards of the era. Double O Szabo were skits in the Creatures of Habit series of movies and are hilarious. Don's sense of humour shone through his public persona. When his wife and mother died Don was there to hold their hands and care for them. In the ten years since his wife died he travelled and mountain biked and cared for his two daughters, mostly with a smile on his face. His unique films stood out and started the careers of some of the other BC film crews like Treetop. In 1996 Murray was in a car accident that left him paralyzed. Over the last 33 years he's navigated his new life in a way that can only be described as awe inspiring. I say that it's a snowboard hill because snowboarders outnumbered skiers 10 to 1 when we visited. Alex helped us navigate getting set up and then I sat with him and Frank Hao, the man behind the manufacturing of Ken Ach's Pro Standard Quick Release for Step On Bindings. He is FNRad's first Octogenarian guest and he's the man responsible for allowing snowboarding at Baker in 1984! Matt started One Ball Jay wax in the eighties and still sells his quality wax and accessories to all the best snowboard shops… The MC wayfinder shape came out of the MC Blank DIY snowboard program, a board you cut out and finish yourself. matt Cummins has contributed so much to snowboarding over his lifelong career. He won contests without coaches, learned double corks without airbags, and chose to not do the same run twice, such a badass. There's a famous jump called The Rosen below a power line... Just a couple of years back Josh filmed a part for Wash'd Up, a movie by Kurt Jensen featuring a big group of talented snowboarders from Washington in their 30's and 40's. He’s still a part of the  Mervin manufacturing family, the snowboarders who produce LibTech and Gnu snowboards very near Canada. Josh spent a good amount of time in New York City building the clothing brand Saturdays, which now has store locations around the globe. He’s also the host of  Dirt, the adventure travel show produced by Huckberry, where Josh teams up with local chefs to craft a meal that truly represents a region, with a focus on unique ingredients, makers, and communities that give every place its own special flavor. Send us a textJason Thomas Brown is one of only 27 professional snowboarders who have had a Pro Model on Burton and the only one who did hand painted topsheets for each individual board one year. He first rode for Sessions and filmed with Fall Line Films, Cinema Seaone, and Mack Dawg. After Burton, Jason created CAPiTA snowboards and assembled a team of snowboarders and artists to build something new and those early days of CAPiTA set the standard for a board company by snowboarders for snowboarders. More than twenty years later Jason Thomas Brown  is back in the snow, where he belongs, after a very long break.
