Race week is finally here! And just in time for this weekend's 2026 TCS New York City Marathon, Nicholas Thompson, CEO of The Atlantic, joins Rob and Becs for a conversation about his newly published book “The Running Ground: A Father, a Son, and the Simplest of Sports,”. Exactly the inspiration you need before your weekend run, Thompson's book explores how running shaped his relationship with his father, helped him navigate ambition and aging, and instilled lifelong discipline. He shares insights on the parallels between writing and running, and the lessons he learned from the sport, including training for his first marathon in 2005 and earning the American age-group record in the 50K in 2021. He opens up about how his father’s lack of discipline, which led him to die “a bankrupt tax fugitive running a brothel in Southeast Asia,” motivated him to take the opposite path by finding purpose through structure and focus. This Sunday, Thompson will toe the line for his 12th New York City Marathon and is hopeful that his son will join him at the start line in the future for some healthy father-son competition. The first-ever video version of Set the Pace launches this week at the Peloton Studios in NYC, as Rob and Becs interview Queens-born N.O.R.E., who burst onto the scene in the late 1990s as one half of the hip-hop duo Capone-N-Noreaga. He went on to a successful solo career, and most recently, became the co-host of the popular podcast Drink Champs, where he interviews rap legends over a few drinks. Find out how this hip-hop veteran went from “Noreaga” to “marathon runner,” and why he’s embracing health and wellness with the same passion that he’s brought to his music career. When his homie Busta Rhymes asked him, “What do you do this for?” N.O.R.E. said he runs to “be a better version of me.” Plus, a few weeks ago, Meb caught up with NYRR member Noah Perez, a young runner who took up the sport on a whim and dove in headfirst, drawn by the challenge and competition. The more he ran, the more running became something deeper. WATCH the show on YouTube!!! FOLLOW NYRR: Instagram | Facebook | X | TikTok | YouTube SUPPORT: Support the Set the Pace podcast! Joining the show this week is Deborah McFadden, a trailblazer in disability rights who played a key role in passing the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). At 23, while in graduate school, Deborah was struck with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare illness that causes paralysis. Facing intense discrimination, Deborah became determined to fight for disability equality and was later appointed U.S. Commissioner of Disabilities under President George H.W. Bush. The ADA transformed public life by mandating curb cuts, ramps, accessible restrooms, and equal access to education and employment. Deborah is the mother of Paralympic athletes Tatyana and Hannah McFadden. During a humanitarian trip to Russia, Deborah met six-year-old Tatyana, a child with spina bifida living in an orphanage. Deborah brought her home to the U.S., later adopting Hannah from an orphanage in Albania. Determined to give her daughters equal opportunities, she fought for inclusive school sports—leading to the Tatyana’s Law, which guarantees equal athletic opportunities for students with disabilities. Tiki shares what inspired him to run his first New York City Marathon in 2014 and going on to complete over 15 marathons, including races in Boston, Big Sur, and Jerusalem with hopes of running all Abbott World Marathon Majors. He talks about how the “beauty of running is the encouragement you get” from the spectators, unlike football where you may get booed by the crowd, which he lightheartedly admits he’s experienced a few times. Tiki also discusses his work with Team for Kids and Achilles International and what’s next for him, including being a guide runner at the NYRR Staten Island Half. In this special Father’s Day episode, Rob is joined by NYRR board member and marathoner Juan Uro who shares how running gave him the motivation to keep moving after losing his 6-year-old son, Bautista. Earlier this year Juan completed the World Marathon Challenge—running seven marathons on seven continents in seven days—in memory of Bauti, as he affectionally refers to his late son. Throughout the 5-day, 20-hour challenge, his wife Mariela and daughter Isabella cheered him on from their home in NYC. Juan says running was a way for him to deal with grief, giving him a reason to get out of bed almost every morning and move forward, even in the darkest days. What happens when the person who saves your life is someone you’ve never met? Ninety nine seconds—that’s all Peter’s lungs can manage on his first post-transplant run. But the shock of those agonizing 200 meters ignites an out‑loud promise to himself: Peter pledges he will run the 2021 TCS New York City Marathon, just 12 weeks away. Starting with small steps, Peter shrinks the city into single‑block laps, keeping the memory of coughing up blood in reserve as inspiration to keep moving forward, step by step, to the start line on Staten Island. Race day erupts in tears and cannons and unexpected angels. Peter attempts to leave the patient behind on the roads, and to cross the finish line into a new story. Tune into this week’s episode as Rob and Becs are joined by Slow AF Run Club founder Martinus Evans—an author, advocate, and someone who's made the sport of running so much more inclusive. Back in 2012 while working 10-12 hours a day at a sales job, he hurt his hip and went to his doctor for a checkup. The doctor told him he was fat and needed to lose weight. Martinus told the doctor he was going to run a marathon—and a year later, he did. Martinus is one of the featured runners in a new film produced by New York Road Runners and Tribeca Productions, which is premiering at this year's Tribeca Festival on June 12. Hear Martinus, now a new father, talk about how running and fatherhood have a few things in common: small wins along the way with a lot of bumps and obstacles too. Ultimately though, the goal is to get the baby across the finish line. FOLLOW NYRR: Instagram | Facebook | X | TikTok SUPPORT: Support the Set the Pace podcast! Mark Milde, the race director of the BMW Berlin Marathon joins Set the Pace to talk about what it's like to race 26.2 miles through one of Germany's most storied cities. With the marathon celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, Mark has a lifetime of experience when it comes to this race because his father, Horst Milde, founded the race in 1974. This year will have a celebratory feel with lots of music along the course and a special exhibition at the Brandenburg Gate showcasing the history of the race. The past 50 years has seen dramatic change in Berlin, most notably, the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 that had divided the city. Mark’s father, along with other race organizers, rerouted the course from being run entirely in West Berlin to entering parts of East Berlin, yet still maintaining the fast and flat course that it’s known for. Then, the great Meb Keflezighi will be here with NYRR member and seasoned marathoner Paola Marte, and today's Meb Minute which focuses on week 7 of training for the TCS New York City Marathon. Born from his own passion for running and building community, Tyler founded Endorphins in November 2020 while training for a 50-mile ultra marathon. He started posting online asking people if they wanted to train with him because most of his friends weren’t runners. It started with one person showing up to run with him and since then has grown to approximately 18,000 members in 11 cities including New York City, Chicago, Boston, and Seattle.
