Welcome to episode 122 of The Journey Is the Reward! Hold onto your tray tables, folks, because in this episode, we're not just flying—we're doing a full 180-degree turn on our usual format! We've deployed the flaps for a fresh introduction, and Brian takes the controls to interrogate (er, interview ) Micah about his recent aerial journey from Portland, Maine, all the way to Philadelphia for a very important mission: attending his niece's wedding. But first, we're diving into the mailbag! Listener Murilo sent in an audio message wanting the full story behind why your host refuses to check a bag—is it a matter of principle or just an overly large carry-on? Then, Listener Peter details a mid-flight issue with his seating assignment, asking for our expert guidance on how we would have navigated the turbulence of that awkward situation. For the main event, we get all the from Micah’s trek on American Airlines, dissecting the journey from the tarmac to his landing at the Marriott Residence Inn. We also cover his ground haul to the wedding venue, including a key fuel stop to catch a football game. Micah took a deliberate detour to a local kosher deli, and the food was so utterly divine, it completely ruined his dining experience at the swanky Chase Sapphire Lounge. And as always, our ears are blessed by the utterly soul-stirring, goosebump-inducing sounds of the Madalitso Youth Choir ! Their Welcome and Goodbye songs, recorded straight from the Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia, are pure magic.

Welcome to episode 121 of The Journey Is the Reward! All good flights must come to an end, and sadly, the incredible 15-day Southern Africa adventure of a lifetime is concluding! Join Brian and crew as their journey wraps up and they depart Botswana. Fortunately, he remembers to pull out the microphone at the airport lounge to capture a fantastic conversation with the rest of the crew: Barb, Jim, Gerrit, and Malin. It's a bittersweet moment as the group parts ways, with Gerrit and Malin flying off to Windhoek, Namibia, while Barb, Jim, and Brian head to Johannesburg for the final leg of their "flight plan." This last push includes important city sightseeing in both Johannesburg and Pretoria, one last chance for thrilling game drive, and immersive museum visits. Of course, the trip wouldn't be complete without a crucial stop for souvenirs! The crew made sure they filled their suitcases with treasures and gifts discovered at the Artisan Market at the Rosebank Mall for everyone back home. It seems like only yesterday the trip started, but a very quick 15 days later, the adventure was over, sealed with the memory of the utterly soul-stirring, goosebump-inducing sounds of the Madalitso Youth Choir! You'll hear their poignant Welcome and Goodbye songs, recorded straight from the Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia, adding pure magic to this final African episode.

Welcome to episode 120 of The Journey Is the Reward! Prepare for the continuing high-flying stories and adventures across Southern Africa. The episode begins with Ground Control Howie taxiing the group to the Cape Town International (CPT) for the next leg of their journey, a flight to Victoria Falls. Immediately, they encountered turbulence with Brian's Priority Pass access, resulting in a temporary grounding. However, quick thinking from either Gerrit or Jim bypassed the holding pattern. They successfully executed a rescue mission, allowing Brian to join the crew in the lounge closer to the departure gate, ensuring smooth sailing into their next flight. With ground operations complete, the crew boarded their scheduled service flight with ProFlight Zambia on a CRJ-500, as they headed toward the mighty mist of Victoria Falls. They landed safely at the Victoria Falls (VFA) aerodrome where they logged three days at the Avani hotel and enjoyed the spectacular Victoria Falls and surrounding areas. The group also explored the town of Livingstone with a very pregnant Connie was acting as their friendly tour guide. During this layover, Malin, Gerrit and Brian also completed a cross-border transit—a quick international hop—gaining another Passport Stamp as they walked across the Victoria Falls Bridge to enter Zimbabwe. Following the successful layover, the crew transitioned smoothly into Botswana. Here they engaged in specialized safaris conducted by both land and rivercraft. Treating themselves to First Class Amenities, they enjoyed therapeutic massages by CasLea Beauty Spa . Brian, ever the charismatic traveler, found a lifelong friend in his favorite masseuse, Cassandra! The show closes with an announcement: a special recording with the whole flight crew was captured inside the airport lounge. However, listeners will have to wait for the next episode to hear the full crew banter from the terminal! And as always, our ears are blessed by the utterly soul-stirring, goosebump-inducing sounds of the Madalitso Youth Choir ! Their Welcome and Goodbye songs, recorded straight from the Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia, are pure magic.

Welcome to episode 119 of The Journey Is the Reward! Get ready to ascend to cruising altitude, because this episode is a first-class ticket straight into the culinary and cocktail world of the skies! Brian takes you along as he walks the Airline Passenger Experience trade show—an entire show dedicated to what fills those little metal carts... and Brian ate and drank everything he could. We kick off with some listener correspondence from Listener Aavi who asks if we've ever requested a special meal. Did we navigate the complexities of "low-sodium" or "kosher," or are we happy with the standard "chicken or pasta" approach? Find out our preferred inflight dining strategy! Listener Lu wants to know our take on the serious incident involving a passenger who made a direct threat to the safety of an aircraft in Seattle. It begs the question: Have we ever been on a flight where a passenger tried to open the emergency exit before the jet bridge was attached? We share our least favorite inflight passenger stories. In the Shoutouts section, Brian delivers a truly high-altitude promotional idea for Emirates, involving a second version of The Sphere. It's so creative, it might just require a NOTAM of its own.! Buckle up! The main event is the series of interviews Brian conducted while sampling the latest and greatest products destined for a seat tray near you. Undercover Snacks , Quinoa chocolate cookies, their new flavor is preparing for Gate Release! Mission Craft Cocktails , Premixed, large-format cocktails, A high-stakes operation—their profits help those in need. Snack Box to Go , Great bread & airplane french fries, perfect for when you need a smooth, non-spicy landing. Just Enough Wine , Canned wine that’s actually good, A woman-owned business providing perfect altitude-friendly pours! Brett and Cranky Dorkfest , Aviation geek gathering, Brian had a missed approach on the date. Micah, your boarding pass is waiting! Sheps Bakery , The best stroopwaffle, This is the Superior Flight Level of stroopwaffles; United, time for a vendor change! Gin and Juice , Great mixing gin, Brian's "Watermelon Drink" is still stuck in a holding pattern for licensing. Rocco liked the mix but wasn’t sold on the licensing deal. Egal Pads , Feminine hygiene on a roll, The most unique ground support equipment at the show, and Brian needed put it to use after a gear-down deployment (aka blowing out stitches)! After all that taxiing around the show floor, Brian sadly experienced a Missed Connection—he wasn't able to land an interview with United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby! And as always, our ears are blessed by the utterly soul-stirring, goosebump-inducing sounds of the Madalitso Youth Choir ! Their Welcome and Goodbye songs, recorded straight from the Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia, are pure magic.

Welcome to episode 118 of The Journey Is the Reward! We want to dive right into the main topic this week, but first, let's address the elephant in the control tower . We have zero listener feedback, the best part of the show when you write in. No questions from Listener Lu, the second-best part of the show. So it seems like the digital winds are calm, or maybe everyone is too busy packing their bags for our next adventure. Who knows… While the feedback section is experiencing a bit of radio silence , our listener audience is absolutely booming! We have a new listener in Zambia ! Seriously, huge congratulations to friend-of-the-show and all-around super-helpful listener, Connie , who has given birth to a beautiful 7.25-pound baby boy! That's right, Connie, you've successfully completed the most demanding international flight of all, and landed a perfect new human. Welcome to the world, little one! We thank you, Connie, for helping us grow our audience! If you'd like to help Connie and the baby with a small fuel surcharge contribution, please send an email to Brian at Brian@TheJourneyIsTheReward.org , and he’ll give you the information for a contribution via Remitly. Forget the gate agents, we are skipping the pre-flight checks and jumping right into the main event: The Journey Is The Reward listener trip to Southern Africa ! The journey began with a bit of a turbulence warning courtesy of Ethiopian Airlines, but your intrepid host, Brian, was able to level the wings and resolve the issues before taking a United flight to Johannesburg. A quick stop to visit Momma Coleman in New Jersey for some essential pre-flight nourishment (and probably a very stern warning about remembering his fleece and passport), and then he was officially airborne. The stress of international travel only continued with a tight connection in South Africa—the kind of connection that makes you wish you had an afterburner installed on your carry-on luggage. But thanks to the super-friendly airport staff, Brian was able to successfully navigate the terminal like seasoned ground crew , making his gate just in time. Upon final arrival in Cape Town, South Africa, Brian finally met up with Barb, Malin, Jim, and Gerrit for the start of three days of city sightseeing and country wine tasting. Stay tuned to hear how Brian managed to keep his V-speeds in check while tasting all that excellent South African vino! And as always, our ears are blessed by the utterly soul-stirring, goosebump-inducing sounds of the Madalitso Youth Choir ! Their Welcome and Goodbye songs, recorded straight from the Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia, are pure magic.

Welcome to episode 117 of The Journey Is the Reward! We've got a full manifest for this episode. First up, we're taking on some listener feedback from Terrific Tanya. She's been listening to Chris Hutchins on the Tim Ferriss Show and says we're both right about points versus cash back. Sorry, Tanya, you can't be a straddler on this one! Just like you can't say you love both Airbus and Boeing equally, you've got to pick a side— Team Points or Team Cash Back . As always, our listeners are the real experts on this crew, so keep those flight plans coming to brian@TheJourneyIsTheReward.org . Then, we’re getting into the ground-level drama. Listener Lu wants to know about the new technology American Airlines is using to fight the "gate lice" who try to cut the line and board before their group is called. It's a real pet peeve of ours, so you know we have some strong opinions on this one. For our main segment, we're climbing to cruising altitude with our guest, Clint Henderson , from The Points Guy. We'll chat about his journey to becoming the managing editor, the tools he uses to maximize his points, and find out what team he's on. Though, as you might guess from his job, he’s firmly Team Points . And as always, our ears are blessed by the utterly soul-stirring, goosebump-inducing sounds of the Madalitso Youth Choir ! Their Welcome and Goodbye songs, recorded straight from the Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia, are pure magic.

Welcome to episode 116 of The Journey Is the Reward! We're cleared for takeoff on a great episode today. First, we're hitting the skies with some feedback from Listener Barbara. She’s asking about Clear Air Turbulence. She is also curious if Brian is ever concerned about it while he's busy socializing with the flight crew in the back of the plane. As always, our listeners are the real experts on this show, so keep those questions coming to: brian@TheJourneyIsTheReward.org . Then, Listener Lu wants to know about the person in Italy who threw a temper tantrum at the gate because of their luggage being a few pounds overweight and she refused to gate check her bag. This passenger refused to comply with the gate agent’s request, so she and her bag got to take a different flight entirely. For our main segment, we've got a change of flight crew. Captain Dana is back in the cockpit, but this time, Brian's taking over the controls for the interview. It's a role reversal, so get ready for a whole new kind of conversation. And as always, our ears are blessed by the utterly soul-stirring, goosebump-inducing sounds of the Madalitso Youth Choir ! Their Welcome and Goodbye songs, recorded straight from the Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia, are pure magic.

Welcome to episode 115 of The Journey Is the Reward! We're getting right to the main event today. There's no listener feedback on the flight plan for this episode, and for a good reason. We’ve got an extended interview with our guest, Captain Armando, and his First Officer that you won’t want to miss. But as always, we want to hear from you, so keep those questions coming to: brian@TheJourneyIsTheReward.org . We did, however, manage to squeeze in a quick flight-deck discussion. Our listener Lu wants to know about passengers bringing smelly foods onto planes. As you'll soon hear, Armando and his co-pilot have a lot of relevant experience with this topic. For our main segment, we're talking with Captain Armando and his First Officer about an absolutely wild journey: Mr. Beast’s 100 Day Challenge . The mission was simple, but the execution was not. Armando had to stay on Mr. Beast's plane for 100 days straight. If he could manage to stay on board, he would win the plane—a prize worth a cool $2.5 million. That's a daily rate of $25,000 for staying put! Listen in as Micah and Brian break down the challenge and find out if he was cleared for landing with the prize. And as always, our ears are blessed by the utterly soul-stirring, goosebump-inducing sounds of the Madalitso Youth Choir ! Their Welcome and Goodbye songs, recorded straight from the Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia, are pure magic.

Welcome to episode 114 of The Journey Is the Reward. We're cleared for a jam-packed flight today. First, we've got some listener feedback from Mike, who's got the scoop on a new bus service for getting into Manhattan from the three NYC airports. He’s giving us a new approach to ground transportation. Our listeners are the real experts on this crew. Next, Listener Jessie is asking about the real-world situation with the fire recovery in SoCal—it’s a topic the news has been ignoring. Brian is on the ground and will give you an honest update…and it’s mostly not great. Our listeners are truly the best part of the show, so please send in your questions to: brian@TheJourneyIsTheReward.org. After that, Listener Lu wants to know a topic that has us fired up: the Airline Reporting Corporation selling our data to the US Customs and Border Protection. You can probably guess how Micah and Brian feel about that one. For the main segment, Micah will interview Captain Dana from Acme Airlines again. Captain Dana was back up in Maine so Micah took the time out of his busy schedule to interview Captain Dana after they finished a wonderful meal at Becky’s Diner. We are sure it was much better than airline food! And as always, our ears are blessed by the utterly soul-stirring, goosebump-inducing sounds of the Madalitso Youth Choir ! Their Welcome and Goodbye songs, recorded straight from the Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia, are pure magic.

Welcome to Episode 113 of The Journey Is the Reward! While our inbox might be empty, that's probably because we don't constantly remind you that you are the most vital part of this show! But hey, if you've got burning questions, insights, or just want to tell us how much you adore our dulcet tones, send them to brian@TheJourneyIsTheReward.org . Micah and Brian are standing by, ready to answer all your queries. And if we've managed to ruffle your feathers, feel free to air your grievances at IAmReallyOffended@yahoo.com . Yes, that's a real email address, and yes, we do read every single one – consider it our in-flight suggestion box, with slightly more turbulence. This week, Listener Lu sent in a fascinating query about the audacious individual who reportedly impersonated flight attendants and pilots on over 120 flights. It’s a story so wild, it practically wrote itself into a sequel of Catch Me If You Can – though this particular aviator wannabe certainly didn't stick the landing and, sadly, his career has been grounded indefinitely. Listener Lu also wanted to dive into the world of travel passes, specifically how those coveted travel agent and airline "buddy passes" actually work. As always, Micah and Brian have the inside scoop for Listener Lu. Adding to our high-flying adventures, you might have caught Micah as a guest host on WBZ Radio in Boston , chatting with Bradley Jay about travel tips and the latest news. Micah, ever the opinionated traveler, truly soared through the segment! Our main event this episode? Brian’s recent trip to New Jersey to visit the Queen, his mom. What started as a smooth taxiing experience on public transportation quickly veered off course, thanks to the notorious summer weather patterns in Newark. While United's 787s might be operating with a minimum crew of seven flight attendants – leaving some of us to wonder if they’re playing a game of musical chairs with the galley carts – Brian was still in awe of their exceptional service. Though, we must lament Brian's un-cleared upgrades; having to sit in the back of the plane can feel like a direct descent into coach class purgatory for a seasoned traveler. Thankfully, the incredible flight attendants ensured his journey, both to and from New Jersey, was as comfortable as possible, even with the inevitable weather delays. Because, let’s be honest, flying into Newark in the summertime without a delay is about as rare as finding an empty overhead bin on a fully booked flight! And as always, our ears are blessed by the utterly soul-stirring, goosebump-inducing sounds of the Madalitso Youth Choir ! Their Welcome and Goodbye songs, recorded straight from the Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia, are pure magic.

Welcome to Episode 112 of The Journey Is the Reward! This week, we're cleared for an eventful flight, featuring everything from passenger triumphs to professional pilot insights. First up, fasten your seatbelts for a trip report from listener Mark VanRamm. Despite hitting a bit of turbulence, Mark proves that a positive attitude is the best carry-on, navigating his travel woes with grace. We've all been there – sometimes the only thing we can control is our squawk code! Then, listener Lu sends us a distress signal about the ever-dreaded flight cancellation , specifically pondering the hypothetical (or perhaps, not-so-hypothetical) scenario of Silver Airlines going belly-up. Micah and Brian, ever the voice of reason (and experience), offers some navigational guidance through these turbulent skies. Before we land on our main interview, Micah shares a couple of pre-flight checks. He gives us an update on his friends who recently experienced the "breezy" side of travel, and recounts a chuckle-worthy tale of a family member in an exit row who, let's just say, might have been better suited for a window seat with a view of the snack cart. Remember folks, in an emergency, those doors aren't just for dramatic exits! Finally, for our main event, we're thrilled to feature Micah's captivating interview with our favorite European aviator, Captain Al . While vacationing stateside, Captain Al, in his capacity as Chief Pilot, offers a fascinating look into his airline's acquisition of their first Airbus A321XLR . He also provides some insightful commentary on the broader airline industry – perfect for anyone who's ever wondered what goes on behind the cockpit door besides just selecting the in-flight movie. And as always, our show is perfectly bookended by the truly soul-stirring, goosebump-inducing sounds of the Madalitso Youth Choir ! Their Welcome and Goodbye songs, recorded live from the Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia. So, buckle up, relax, and enjoy the flight! Let's make some memories and genuinely enjoy the Journey, because, well, it truly is the Reward!

Welcome to Episode 111 of The Journey Is the Reward! On this week's show, we're absolutely thrilled to welcome a true titan of the skies, soon-to-be Lifetime Global Services member, Fozz Mahmud of the Dots, Lines, and Destinations podcast. This man has more air miles than a commercial airline, and we can't wait to pick his brain. But before we ascend to that altitude, we've got some essential pre-flight checks. First up, we're answering a question from Listener Francis , who's curious about navigating the complexities of flying around and within closed airspace. And because we never shy away from a little turbulence, Micah and I will also be discussing the geopolitical intricacies of flying into regions like Israel and Iran. It's a topic that demands a professional pilot's precision and a diplomat's tact. Then, Listener Lu sends in a fantastic query about converted aircraft. She wants to know if we've ever landed ourselves in a plane that's been repurposed into a house or, perhaps, dined in a fuselage-turned-restaurant. We're ready to share our airborne architectural adventures! And, as always, we've got a few shout-outs and detours to cover. The Journey Is the Reward recently received a wonderful mention on the Plane Crazy Downunder podcast– a true feather in our cap! We'll also be touching down on the important topic of fish tacos at Rubio's in San Diego (because even aviators need good fuel!) and Brian's masterful use of the $200 Hilton resort credit from his Hilton Aspire credit card. Sometimes, even when you're not in the air, you're still strategically navigating the travel landscape. After all that vital housekeeping, Brian and Micah are absolutely delighted to share a recorded conversation with our esteemed guest, Fozz Mahmud , fellow co-host of the truly exceptional travel industry podcast, Dots, Lines, and Destinations . Fozz is on the cusp of achieving the legendary status of Lifetime 4 Million Mile status with United Airlines – a feat that makes most frequent flyers feel like they're still in the holding pattern. Brian's certainly been working towards it, though he's not sure he'll ever reach that altitude now that his full-time business travel days are somewhat grounded. It's a truly engaging conversation with Fozz, where we explore his preferred flying experiences, aircraft, and destinations, as well as the ever-evolving, sometimes turbulent, world of points and miles. And as always, our show is perfectly bookended by the truly soul-stirring, goosebump-inducing sounds of the Madalitso Youth Choir ! Their Welcome and Goodbye songs, recorded live from the Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia, are pure magic – they'll have you feeling like you're floating on cloud nine. So, buckle up, relax, and enjoy the flight! Let's make some memories and genuinely enjoy the Journey, because, well, it truly is the Reward!

Welcome to Episode 110 of The Journey Is the Reward ! This week, Brian and Micah have a great show lined up for you, featuring an insightful interview Micah recorded with our good friend, Steven Ivey , a corporate pilot, plus a few other interesting tidbits. First up, Listener Sarah wrote in asking about the show’s updated introduction where Brian mentions flying over 6 million miles. She wants to know how that's possible when he is still just a bit over 3 million with United. And Brian is excited to finally pull back the curtain and share the full story behind that! Then, listener Lu wants our take on United's new check-in cutoff times. You might be surprised to hear that Micah and Brian have slightly different opinions on this one, so get ready for a lively discussion. After that, the guys dive into some fascinating statistics about you , our amazing listeners! Brian shares details on how many of you there are, your age brackets, geographic locations, and the platforms you use to tune in and he’ll also reveal the most popular episodes. It's awesome to see that Chef Kathy's episode is still in the top 10, though she's got some ground to cover to catch up with Captain Jeff! And as always, our show is bookended by the truly soul-stirring, goosebump-inducing sounds of the Madalitso Youth Choir! Their Welcome and Goodbye songs, recorded live from the Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia, are pure magic. Want to experience that magic in person? Welcome to Episode 109 of The Journey Is The Reward ! We are generally much less offended than our email inbox suggests! This week are thrilled to welcome back the cartographic genius himself, Eric the Mapmaker . But before we dive into Eric's latest adventures, we had to address a burning question from the email account – emphatically named Imreallyoffended@yahoo.com . Then, Listener Mike hit us up with a real puzzler about gifting flight crews , because apparently, Reddit has decided that kindness gets you fired. Who knew?! And speaking of flight decks, Listener Lu drops a fantastic question about single pilot operations and whether we really need two humans up front at all times. We've got thoughts, and we're not afraid to share them. Our main event today is a truly special chat with Eric The Mapmaker . He embarked on a domestic airline odyssey, hitting up a bunch of different cities, and proving that sometimes, the best laid travel plans are the ones you throw out the window halfway through. And as always, our ears are blessed by the utterly soul-stirring, goosebump-inducing sounds of the Madalitso Youth Choir ! Their Welcome and Goodbye songs, recorded straight from the Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia, are pure magic. Want to experience that magic in person? Welcome to Episode 108 of The Journey Is The Reward! This week, we're navigating some significant changes at United, shooting the Breeze with Micah, and as always, hearing from our incredible listeners. First up, Listener Melissa is asking for a much-anticipated health update from Micah – and yes, she might have playfully accused Brian of being a pain in Micah's butt! Plus, Micah continues to unpack the ever-popular packing segment with some invaluable additional advice. Listener Lu returns with another intriguing question about spotting famous people on planes. Then, buckle up as Brian gives us the lowdown on several recent changes at United Airlines. We'll cover the good (think exciting new global destinations), and the not-so-good (specifically, how frequent flyer miles for upgrades have shifted, and updates to Club and Lounge access). Brian also shares the exciting news that Starlink will be installed on United's entire fleet by the end of 2026! After sorting through the United updates, Micah shares the experiences of his friends who recently flew on Breeze Airways. They encountered some issues, and we discuss how Breeze handled the situation – good on resolution, but with room for improvement in communication. As always, our journey is serenaded by the soul-stirring sounds of the Madalitso Youth Choir! Their "Welcome" and "Goodbye" songs, recorded straight from the Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia, are pure magic. On Episode 107 of The Journey Is The Reward, we once again get to talk with Momma Coleman, thanks to the limo services provided by Chef Kathy. Sure, it doesn’t sound right at this point but it will make sense as you listen to the episode. But before we get to the main event, Listener Matt has a follow-on question to my packing skills. Listener Lu wants to know about the $100 hamburger, as it relates to flight. Although calling it a $300 hamburger is probably more accurate these days. Then it’s time for the main segment, Brian’s trip to NJ to surprise Momma Coleman on her 90th birthday and Mother’s Day. Yes, Momma Coleman had done a reverse commute from living in Florida and returned to her birth state to be closer to her oldest son. Brian decided he couldn’t stay away and had to help her unpack. Chef Kathy was there to help… and provide an incredible 90th Birthday carrot cake. We then get to learn all about Brian’s 9 hour delay getting back home to Los Angeles. However, as far as delays go, this one worked out OK for our intrepid traveler. As always, we're serenaded by the soul-stirring sounds of the Madalitso Youth Choir! Their Welcome and Goodbye songs were recorded straight from the Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia and are pure magic. Experience this musical magic in person and join Brian on an epic group adventure to Zambia, Botswana, and South Africa in late September 2025! On Episode 106 of The Journey Is The Reward, our favorite aviation aficionados, Micah and Brian, are back, ready to pack for a trip and navigate the turbulent skies of memory lane. First up, we've got a burning question from Listener, Lu! Did Qatar handle the unfortunate dead passenger situation with the grace and dignity they should have or were there areas for improvement. Then, it's time for some serious travel talk! Micah, clearly envious of Brian's ninja-like packing skills, grills him on how he manages to jet-set for weeks without the dreaded checked baggage. Prepare for the reveal of Brian's mysterious suitcase (ooh, the suspense!) and his coveted tips and tricks. Spoiler alert: apparently, most packing gadgets are dead weight for our seasoned traveler, but he does have some secret weapons in his arsenal for staying fresh as a daisy on those long hauls. But wait, there's more turbulence! Our dynamic duo then throws it back to a classic segment from the legendary Airplane Geeks Podcast, Episode 269. The one and only Max Flight wanted to hear how listeners first caught the aviation bug. Brian, ever the enthusiast, penned his story, but a written word wasn't enough for Max! He wanted audio. And who did Brian tap for this crucial mission while under the weather? Our very own Micah, of course! Apparently, Brian's been enjoying Micah's dulcet tones on his previous submissions. High praise indeed! So, prepare your ears for a heartwarming tale as Micah channels his inner Brian and recounts the pivotal moment his father ignited his passion for all things aviation. But hold on tight, because the journey takes a detour when a certain "pinhead" at the Civil Air Patrol clipped Brian's wings before he even took flight! This leads to a powerful message from Brian himself: don't let anyone ground your dreams! So, grab your beverage of choice, settle into your favorite ejection seat (just kidding… mostly!), and get ready for another episode packed with listener love, packing prowess, nostalgic narratives, and a healthy dose of "don't let the naysayers win!" It's Episode 106 of The Journey Is The Reward – you won't want to miss it! As always, we're serenaded by the soul-stirring sounds of the Madalitso Youth Choir! On Episode 105 of The Journey Is The Reward, Prepare for liftoff! Your intrepid co-pilots, Brian and Micah, chart a course from the tarmac of Burbank to the stratosphere of Seattle. The mission of Brian? To attend the Seattle Aviation and Aerospace Bash, orchestrated by the stellar Isaac Alexander! But before achieving orbit, our flight crew tackles a query beamed in by Listener Lu. She wondered about a passenger who was confused about why airlines don’t fly in a straight line. Brian and Micah address some decidedly off-course information about the flight, transmitted by none other than Elon Musk. Both Brian and Micah feel he should stick to navigating his own launch vehicles! Next, Brian asks a question to the listeners: Should purchase a confirmed First-Class ticket on Spirit Airlines, or take a calculated risk on a United flight, hoping for an upgrade to First? For the main stage of our journey, Micah and Brian recount the epic trek to Burbank airport – a long walk from a new parking lot without shuttle busses! Then they detail the ascent to Seattle, with a strategic refueling stop in Sacramento. Once again, the flight crews of Southwest provided top-notch service. Upon landing at the Seattle Bash, Brian engaged in some interviews. In one daring encounter, he gently confronted organizer Isaac Alexander about a slight deviation from the promised mission parameters – a BBQ promised, but Mediterranean seafood deployed! Despite this minor anomaly, Isaac's event was a great evening for Pacific Northwest Aviation and Space aficionados. Featuring captivating speakers, a treasure trove of aviation SWAG at the freebie table, and a lucky draw where every participant was a winner, it was a truly stellar evening. The show opens and closes with the breathtaking sounds of the Madalitso Youth Choir! Their vibrant Welcome and Goodbye songs were recorded live at the majestic Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia. Want to experience their magic in person? Join us on an unforgettable group trip to Zambia, Botswana and South Africa in late September 2025! (Check out this article for more information. https://www.businesstraveller.com/features/which-airlines-have-the-best-premium-economy/ ) Listener subway Mark writes in about taking public transportation to the airport. On episode 89, Micah and I talk about my road trip to some of the National Parks in the Western United States. But first, we hear from Listener Shannon, who is offended that she isn't offended??? There isn’t a Listener Lu segment this show so this gives us more time to jump into the main topic, my National Parks road trip. I call it a road trip but I was able to fly into Sioux Falls and meet up with John Mollison, the producer of Old Guys and Their Airplanes. In addition, I got to learn about his podcast called, The Linebackers II Libraries, which is a series of shows dedicated to the B-52 pilots and crews that supported the Linebacker campaign of the Vietnam war. They are an amazing collection of interviews so please check them out! As for my trip, I got to see The Corn Palace, Wall Drug, The Badlands, Yellowstone National Park, The Grand Tetons and a whole bunch more. Oh, and I get to fly home from Salt Lake City on Southwest airlines. Because we didn't have any listener mail, we go right into our conversation with Kate about her job and the Long Beach Airport. Founded in 1923, the Long Beach Airport is the oldest municipal airport in California. On episode 85, Micah and I finally wrap up my trip to Australia. But first, we hear from Listener Bill who wants to know why Micah loves his cash back instead of going for points. Had Micah spent on the right cards, he would have had enough miles for a free business class ticket to Australia. Instead, he only received $240 in cash. We also had the opportunity to share our thoughts on Listener Lu's question about Southwest charging for seats. Both Micah and I believe this will not work out well for Southwest. During the main segment, we get to play the episode that was recorded in Australia at the PCDU home studio of Steve, and was supposed to be played when I was still in country. We then get to hear Steve do a Pacific Airshow Gold Coast radio promo. The Oz Desk, episode 813, which is played on the Airplane Geeks, was played next. Then we get to hear the recording from the meetup with Grant, ATC Ben, Evan and Leighton. A great time was had by all. On episode 84, Micah and I continue my coverage of the Pacific Airshow Gold Coast at Surfers Paradise, Australia. But first, we hear from Chef Kathy about her return trip from Las Vegas... and she really was lucky because she won the lottery! Listener Lu wants to know about flight attendants and if they have preferred routes. Then I get to comment on how United still isn't being helpful on the ground. We learn why I decided to fly home early before we play some interviews from the airshow. The first interview is with Angela (not Emma) and Mark of the Freedom Formation. They are part of the team that makes up the largest flying collection of Vans aircraft. I also get to talk with Mandy Hentschel and Nathan Blackberry of Westpac, the rescue / lifesaving service of Australia. I conclude my interviews with Angus Ashcroft from the Gold Coast Training and Flight School, a unique flight instructor program located at the Gold Coast airport. And if anyone is interested in joining me on a trip to Africa in September or October, 2025, please let me know so I can get you more information. But first, Listener Paul writes in to let us know he wasn't happy with our production quality / sound levels. Through a bunch of emails, thinks get pretty hysterical. Then I talk with Micah about not having any regrets... but he still won't upgrade his ancient PC to a Mac... at least not until Microsoft stops support for Windows 10. Listener Lu wants to know if we have ever witnessed any physical violence on a airplane. This question stems from the incident where a United Airlines flight attendant has part of his shirt bitten off by a human passenger. We then play the recorded interviews we conducted with the Summer Flight Team Interns from the California Science Center. And I can not stress enough how great these kids are and how lucky we were to be able to interview them. They are very special people and it was great to be able to help inspire them during the 8 week program. We hope you enjoy the interviews! On episode 45, Micah and I talk with Chef Kathy, a High School friend, who flew to Ireland to see someone special. But first, Micah and I answer listener email... one of the best parts of the show. The first email comes from Listener Linda who thanked us for talking about maps with Eric in episode 44. Then Mom Coleman writes in to thank Eric for sending her a box of maps and books! (Thank you Eric!!!) Then David Abby writes in to talk about how airplane spotting and train spotting and maps are loves in his life. OK, maybe not that but it's close. Regardless, it was a lot of Eric thank you emails!!! Listener Lu asked us about our most memorable trips with our parents growing up. Can anyone say Road Trip? Micah than adds one to the correction file as he misspoke over Breese. He said they had an A-320 but it was an A-220. The main topic for this weeks show is Chef Kathy's trip to Ireland... not on United. And because she is a chef and Micah loves to talk about food, we have a few words about the menu onboard as well as the food items consumed on the ground... and one donut that was literally consumed from the ground. We also find out how much of a U2 fan Chef Kathy is. Thanks once again to all of our listeners and especially our international (Non-US) listeners. Please write in and let us know how you found the show and why you listen. We love hearing from you!!! Opening music is provided by the Madalitso Youth Choir as they sing their Welcome Song, recorded at the lobby of The Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia. We hope you enjoy the show!

On episode 44, Micah and I talk with one of the nicest people in aviation, Brett Snyder of Cranky ... everything. Sadly, in this episode we don't have any listener feedback or a question from Listener Lu. Look for those segments again next episode. There simply wasn't time to include them. Our conversation with Brett went from talking about the naming of his company to what he is interested about in the coming months and other interesting stories... like the North East Alliance. We hope you enjoy the show as much as we enjoyed recording it. Thanks once again to all of our listeners and especially our international (Non-US) listeners. Please write in and let us know how you found the show and why you listen. We love hearing from you!!! On episode 43, Micah and I keep the family interviews going as we talk with his Kreplach brother Eric of Franko Maps. Although we don't have any listener mail per se... we did hear from Connie and Tatjana, my two friends I met in Africa. Connie lives in Zambia and Tatjana lives in Denmark but we met in Cape Town. Listen to episode 39! As a follow-up to episode 41, Listener Lu asks about our stuttering and how we overcame it... or at least cover it up. Micah and I then have a great discussion with Eric about cartography and his other projects. One would think in these days of technology that we would never need a printed map. Well, we discuss not only why you could use a map and various uses of maps... including wall art. We also talk about his publications on Trains (an aviation geeks second love) and light houses. Yes, Eric has publications covering maps, wall art, trains and light houses. The conversation was very fascinating Thanks once again to all of our listeners and especially our international (Non-US) listeners. Please write in and let us know how you found the show and why you listen. We love hearing from you!!! Opening music is provided by the Madalitso Youth Choir as they sing their Welcome Song, recorded at the lobby of The Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia. We hope you enjoy the show!

On episode 42, Micah and I get to interview the person responsible for me being on this planet and the one who fostered my love of travel... and enabled The Journey by providing a portion of the financing. Sadly, there is no Listener Mail or a question from Listener Lu this episode. We wanted to devote the entire episode to Mom! With luck, we will be able to bring you those segments again on episode 43. I know I can't say it enough; however, thank you mom for everything you have done for me. As I tell others... it's all your fault. All my good qualities are a result of you and dad. All my bad characteristics... I know better and I take full responsibility for them. :-) On this show, Micah and I talk with mom about how she got involved in travel, her first flight, regrets, what she still would like to do, and her love of cruising. Thanks once again to all of our listeners and especially our international (Non-US) listeners. Please write in and let us know how you found the show and why you listen. We love hearing from you!!! On episode 41, Micah and I record a live show. Listeners might think I have made a mistake, especially when you listen to the start of the show, but that's intentional. I want everyone to hear what the show would normally sound like, raw and unedited... including all of our stuttering. We start the show by listening to an 8 minute clip by James Robinson where he talks with author and journalist, John Hendrickson. John has a speech impediment and the clip is hard to listen to... but I think it's one of the best pieces ever created explaining stuttering and how the listener should listen. I know that sounds repetitive, but it's what you have to do... you have to listen. Then we comment on the emails submitted by listener Jachym from The Czech Republic, and Listener Chris, who is happy that we will be continuing the podcast. Listener Lu wants to know if I will still be a slave to United and where I want to go next, and on what aircraft. The answer might surprise you. We also go over some additions and corrections from Episode 40. (I don't have an issue admitting when I have made a mistake. I just wish it didn't happen so often!) Then we talk about my not so great trip to Tampa to see mom. Micah and I tried to make a recording with mom but I experienced a bunch of technical issues and we never got the recording. However, we are scheduled to record with mom and will bring you that recording in episode 42... if all goes well.

On episode 40, Micah and I discuss all the fun facts, figures and statistics of the Journey. But first we answered questions from Listener Ric and Claire. Ric, who is Micah's brother, ask if the Journey was worth it. Claire asks about how to safely find local places and adventures. Listener Lu wants to know what interesting facts and figures surprised me the most. And that question is answered throughout the show. There are a lot of great facts, figures and statistics. But you will have to listen to the show to learn all about them.

On episode 39, Micah and I continue our discussion of my final trip to Cape Town, South Africa. We did not publish any listener mail this week due to the length of the show but we did hear from Listener Lu. On this show, we talk about the rest of my time in South Africa, all the things I did on the ground being a single tourist. I had a great time and met with some wonderful people / local South Africans. I was also able to help Vovo with a business idea. Then Micah and I talk about my amazing flight home, complete with flight plan from Captain Mo. Thank you Dispatcher Gregg for making it happen. The flights home, CPT to EWR and EWR to LAX were truly amazing. The crews couldn't have done a better job in making me feel so special. I was also able to enjoy a Pork Roll (Taylor Ham) sandwich at The Club in Newark. That was a great way to enjoy breakfast as the food on the plane wasn't all that great.

On episode 38, Micah and I discuss my final trip to Cape Town, South Africa as part of The Journey Is The Reward Project. This will be the first of two parts as there was simply too much to talk about. There was not time to have any listener email... nor a question from Listener Lu. Hopefully we can add those segments back in next week as they really are the best part of the show. However, on this show, we talk about my flight to SA with Purser Charles and my two new favorite flight attendants, David and my want to be cousin, Mrs Karen Coleman (sadly, no relation). In addition, we talk about my first 4 days on the ground, doing walking tours, meeting new friends, wine tasting in Stellenbosch and all the other fun things I got to do. I contracted with Howie for two days and he drove me around to Cape Point National Park, Simons Town and Stellenbosch. I was able to sample some great wines at Hazendal, Delaire Graff Estate, Tokara Wine Estate, and L’Avenir... with my friend Ryan. Than I treated Howie to a great dinner at The Fat Butcher. Please check back next week for episode 39 when Micah and I finish talking about this spectacular trip to Cape Town South Africa... and me reaching my 3 million mile goal in 13 months!

On episode 37, Micah and I talk about my trip back to Japan with my Nephew Bryan and his family. I hadn't been back to Japan in over 20 years so this most certainly was my opportunity to rediscover Japan! But first, Micah and I answer listener email... one of the best parts of the show. Listener Uli asked if I ever had a boarding pass with SSSS printed on it. (More information can be found here: https://onemileatatime.com/guides/ssss-boarding-pass/ ) We then talk about how a mutual friend knows a 777 Captain that I flew with. How fun is that? I also need to pass along some thanks to Listener Peter for sending me a vintage deck of United playing cards. They are greatly appreciated!!! Thank you so much!!! Listener Lu, wants to know about the aircraft we would like to have flown on but haven't. She also wants to know what '80s band did the popular remix of the song Istanbul not Constantinople. Of course Micah knows the answer... They Might Be Giants . And he wanted our listeners to watch some YouTube videos from the band. So here they are: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IqJXxHi6RwQ and https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LsAiCs66l40 . Micah and I then talk about the reunion trip to Japan. Sure, I was there to support nephew Bryan and his running of the Tokyo Marathon, but I was also there to rediscover Japan. Micah and I talk about some of the more interesting places I was able to visit... like the Tokyo SkyTree. I also want to give a huge shoutout to the flight crews for making this one of my best trips yet! You guys are the best!!!

On episode 36, Micah and I talk about my incredible trip to South Africa with Listener Linda. But first, Micah and I answer listener email... one of the best parts of the show. Listener Andrew asked about what site or podcast we mentioned on episode 31. Sadly, Micah and I didn't recall and suggested listening to the episode again. If there are any questions or follow-up, we are happy to address it. Listener Brent asked about my future commitment to United once I reach the 3 million mile goal. Andrew has 2 million with American and United and finds it liberating to fly on any carrier and not be tied to United. Listen to find out how I answer that question. Listener Vin writes in again commenting on how we keep missing each other at airports and he appreciated my comments on Tahiti. Yes, Tahiti was great but it was expensive. Listener Lu, wants to know about our bucket lists of travel destinations. Micah and I give a pretty bad attempt at answering this question as there are simply too many places. Micah and I then talk about the trip to South Africa with Listener Linda. We had such a great time seeing Johannesburg, Kruger National Park, a private game reserve, and Cape Town... all within a week. Although we have some transportation issues, the stay at Nsala and the game drives conducted by Wesley we the best I've ever experienced! I think Linda would agree.

On episode 35, Micah and I continue our discussion about my trip to Israel. There were no questions from Listeners or Listener Lu... because we recorded this episode right after we recorded episode 34. We hope to get more questions for episode 36! While on the ground in Israel, I was taken on a tour of the old City of Jerusalem and my walking adventure of the old port area of Tel Aviv. Then we talk about my visit to the El Al MRO center, I got to inflate a life vest, watch an evacuation slide inflate, got to interview Tal at the OCC... their dispatch center and a whole lot more. Eyal was also able to set up meeting with me at Air One, an eVTOL manufacture. We got to fly a VR flight simulator of their aircraft. We met with the folks at Elbit Systems, makers of drones, HUDs and so many other devices. Then we met with Fetcherr and discussed AI / Machine Learning pricing tools. Micah and I also discuss the food. Oh... all the food I got to experience! Just incredible. Thanks once again to all of our listeners and especially our international (Non-US) listeners. Please write in and let us know how you found the show and why you listen. We love hearing from you!!! On episode 34, Micah and I discuss my first trip ever to Israel. I was hosted by listener Eyal and what a wonderful host he is. I can't believe all the meetings he booked for me and all the great adventures we went on in two days... but we will get into that more in episode 35. Episode 34 discussed the flights both coming and going to Israel But first, Micah and I answer listener email... one of the best parts of the show. Listener Gail asked about the one thing we pack but wish we didn't. Listener Pat asked about when I first started to think about reaching the 3 million mile goal and if I'll try for 4 million. Listener Lu, who wants to know, asks about our first plane ride. Hers was to California on Eastern Airlines and she was rewarded with a visit to DisneyLand. Micah and I then talk about he airline portion of my trip to and from Israel. And I must say... it was a VERY different experience flying into Tel Aviv from San Francisco vs my flight to Newark from Tel Aviv. Thanks once again to all of our listeners and especially our international (Non-US) listeners. Please write in and let us know how you found the show and why you listen. We love hearing from you!!! On episode 33, Micah and I discuss my last recent trip to Singapore. Micah conducted an interview with Listener Missy in Portland Maine. Then we answer questions from Listener Dale about my longest trips. Micah asked a question for Listener Lu who wants to know ... well, you will have to listen to find out. Then Micah and I talk about my trip final trip to Singapore where I got back together with Listener Matt. We celebrated Chinese New Year with some beer and US Navy aircraft servicemen. We were also able to check out a great 24 hour spa. We also discuss the special treatment I received on my flights and my meals at the Polaris Lounge. Thanks once again to all of our listeners and especially our international (Non-US) listeners. Please write in and let us know how you found the show and why you listen. We love hearing from you!!! On episode 32, Micah and I discuss my trip up to Tahiti... or as I'm now calling it, Hawaii South with nice people. We discuss the carbon footprint I'm generating as a result of a conversation that was spurred by friend Jim. He is concerned that I'm killing the planet and his kids will pay the price. Micah and I have an alternative view of the topic. We also answer a question posed by Sarah regarding airport hotels vs city hotels. Listener Lu wanted to know when I'm going to have mom on the show!. Micah and I discuss my adventures in Tahiti. Let me tell you, the Island is a tropical paradise and I didn't want to leave! We close the show with a quick discussion about listener comments and the normal bloopers. Thanks once again to all of our listeners and especially our international (Non-US) listeners. Please write in and let us know how you found the show and why you listen. We love hearing from you!!! On episode 31, Micah and I discuss my trip up to Seattle where I attended the Seattle Aerospace BBQ, hosted by Jet City Star, Isaac Alexander. We also answer listener questions from Melissa and Jessica. Melissa wants to know if we will continue the show after I reach the 3 Million Mile goal. Jessica was wondering why so many women write in with questions and she wanted to know if I was on her Southwest flight from San Jose to Burbank. The flight attendants made an announcement that I was on the plane and going for 3 million miles on United. The announcement must have confused some of the passengers... why would someone going for 3 million miles on United be flying on Southwest. :-) But indeed, it was me! Listener Lu wanted to know if Micah and I were ever involved in a shutdown of the airspace, similar to what happened over the holidays and then again with the DOTs issues with the NOTAM system. Micah and I go on to talk about the Seattle Aerospace BBQ and my conversation with Jon Ostrower, aviation writer extraordinaire and publisher of the Air Current, an aviation news and commentary site. Prior to the BBQ, I was fortunate to walk around the Museum of Flight with Isaac Alexander. It was great fun having him talk about all the various aircraft and aviation history of the greater Seattle area. At the BBQ, I was fortunate enough to sit at the winning table of for the trivia contest. My fellow table mates were in the space industry... which helped a lot as I didn't know any of the space related questions. We won a big bag of SWAG (Stuff We All Get) and there weren't any fights over the very popular items. A great time was had by all and I hope to return next year. We close the show with the normal bloopers and then if you are interested, you can listen to the interviews I recorded at the BBQ with Isaac, Robin - the founder of Hype aviation, Nick - the founder of Jet Tip, and Dave Honan - a very talented plane spotter that shots some interesting subjects. Thanks once again to all of our listeners and especially our international listeners. Please write in and let us know how you found the show and why you listen. We love hearing from you!!! On episode 30, Micah and I host another Windows and Aisles episode due to my lack of flying over the holiday season. As there wasn't time for listeners to send in any feedback between our recordings, we didn't have any questions to answer. Also, we didn't give enough time for the Listener Lu wants to know segment either. Sorry about that! However, this did gave us time to dive right into the interview with Chris Chaput, President of DG Fuels. It was a great discussion on Sustainable Aviation Fuel and how they are going to produce this biofuel out of renewable materials and stranded energy. (If you listened to this interview on the Airplane Geeks Podcast, you can skip this interview as it is the same recording.) Thanks once again to all of our listeners and especially our international listeners. Please write in and let us know how you found the show and why you listen. We love hearing from you!!! Opening music is provided by the Madalitso Youth Choir as they sing their Welcome Song, recorded at the lobby of The Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia. We hope you enjoy the show!

On episode 29, Micah and I host another Windows and Aisles episode. We address a question from Listener Pete who wants to know our opinions on Biometrics and their use in the airline industry We also talk about Jim's situation on getting back to Amsterdam with a very short, 40 minute, connection in Seattle. Then Jim asks about soap dispensers in airplane lavatories. Listener Lu wants to know.... what we plan to do once I reach the 3 Million Mile goal. We have a shout out to listener Andy who offer to teach us audio editing and we renew our request for donations to support the funeral expenses of one of the singers in the Madalitso Youth Choir, Nkoma. She had a wonderful voice and smile! All funds donated will go directly to support her funeral expenses. Thanks once again to all of our listeners and especially our international listeners. Please write in and let us know how you found the show and why you listen. We love hearing from you!!! Opening music is provided by the Madalitso Youth Choir as they sing their Welcome Song, recorded at the lobby of The Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia. We hope you enjoy the show!

On episode 28, Micah and I discuss the adventures of my trip with Scott to Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana. What a great guy and what a great adventure! There were no questions this week as we recorded this episode shortly after episode 27. However, Listener Lu wants to know.... Do I know when my last flight will be and if I plan to do anything special? Will United do anything special? Listen to find out the What and When! Instead of talking about the passenger experience, Micah and I really focused on the details of the land portion of our trip and the safari. It was also great to catch up with an old friend, Connie, from the Royal Livingston Hotel. She spent two days with us showing us around the Falls and her home town of Livingston. She also joined us on a sunset river cruise. Connie, we can't thank you enough for making our trip special!!! Sadly, I get to report that one of their singers, Nkoma, passed away. She had a wonderful voice and a great smile. She will be missed. We hope you enjoy the show!

On episode 27, Micah and I host our second back to back Windows and Aisles Episodes. We address a question from Listener Mark in Argentina who was asking about why we like to fly. We also heard from listener Sharon who is new to the show and asked about what we do on long international flights? How do we keep ourselves occupied? Listener Lu wants to know.... what is the most outrageous behavior we have seen on a plane and if Micah or I have ever been one of THOSE customers. Sadly, we both share a story were we were. Then Micah and I share an interview we conducted with Steve Carlson of T-Mobile where we talk about the Un-carrier On... a new product from T-Mobile. Thanks once again to all of our listeners and especially our international listeners. Please write in and let us know how you found the show and why you listen. We love hearing from you!!! On episode 26, Micah and I host our 3rd Windows and Aisles Episodes... formerly known as Bits and Pieces. This is because I wasn't flying due to the Thanksgiving holiday here in the US and I had foot surgery which has kept me grounded for a few weeks. We address a question from Listener Uli regarding tips and tricks around the airport. I also talk about Mom again. I even quoted a poem I wrote to her when I was 5 years old. It's Peabody material or at least should be considered for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Listener Lu wanted to give us some NJ Tude for ripping on Newark Liberty Airport, but I think Micah and I held our own. And of course, Micah had a song that fit the topic. On the show, Trisha from The Interactive Group, talks about Safety Cards. I'm sure there is a ton of information about the cards that you never knew. Micah and I had a blast talking with her and learned a lot in the process of our interview.

On episode 25, Micah and I discuss my very short trip to Singapore. It was so short, my flight over took longer than I was on the ground in Singapore. Sadly, there was no listener feedback because we recorded two episodes back to back and there wasn't time for listeners to write in. However, Listener Lu wanted to know about mask wearing. Micah and I address the types of mask we wear to help keep everyone safe. On the show, we talk about my two hour delay out of SFO... because a passenger decided to leave the plane after boarding and not tell anyone. We also talk about making an impression on flight attendants, in a positive way, and being remembered for it. I was able to deliver some Costco goods to Listener Matt. My ground time was so short, I didn't bother getting a hotel but learned a great lesson about boarding passes and getting beck into the Lounge.

On episode 24, Micah and I record the show about my trip to Tampa while on a trip to Singapore. We first talk about some corrections and some 747 music, Micah shares his opinions on the web site of Scott's Cheap Flights and then we listen to our first audio feedback from Listener Claire. Eric of Franko Maps gets thanked for sending me Fish ID cards. And we answer the next questions from Listener Lu for her segment, Listener Lu Wants To Know. Oh... and Micah asks me about the Fee Free Pho Noodles at the Star Allience Lounge at LAX. During the show, we talk about my upgrade to Premium Plus on a 777 from LAX to EWR. I had a first on the flight from EWR to TPA where the Captain came back to thank me for the gifts and for my almost 3 million miles with United. We finish the show talking about my misconnect in Newark and how United agents wouldn't let me talk with a Service Director... But in the end, it all worked out OK. United provided me with hotel room and some food vouchers. Not enough value on them to cover the cost of breakfast, but still... I was given some food vouchers. On the last segment, Newark to Los Angeles, I had to sit in regular economy... there wasn't even an economy + seat available. :-( Thanks once again to all of our listeners and especially our international listeners. Please write in and let us know how you found the show and why you listen. We love hearing from you!!! Opening music is provided by the Madalitso Youth Choir as they sing their Welcome Song, recorded at the lobby of The Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia. We hope you enjoy the show!

On this "Bits and Pieces 2" episode, Micah and I present three recordings. The first is with Ryan of Flighty... a flight tracking application that offers so much more. The second interview is with Listener Matt of Singapore. We recorded two segments on my first of two back to back trips. We biked around the Island on his Bromptom bikes, Matt got to try some new beers, and we finally had a Singapore Sling at the Long Bar at the Raffles Hotel. (Hint: It was delicious and worth every penny... Matt paid for it! Thank you Matt!) The third recording is an interview I did this past February with Scott of Scott's Cheap Flights. Sadly, the web site statistics show that not many people went to the website to listen to the segment. Therefore, I decided to include it in this podcast so everyone could hear about their great service. There is no listener mail nor Listener Lu Wants To Know segments because this so episode is already so long. Tune into episode 24 for more listener mail and questions from Listener Lu. Thanks once again to all of our listeners and especially our international listeners. Please write in and let us know how you found the show and why you listen. We love hearing from you!!! Seriously, we love hearing from you and responding to your emails as it is one of the best parts of the show!!! Opening music is provided by the Madalitso Youth Choir as they sing their Welcome Song, recorded at the lobby of The Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia. We hope you enjoy the special Bits and Pieces 2 show!

On episode 23, Micah and I comment on listener feedback from listener Melissa, and more follow-up from listener Chris. We also introduce a new segment, Listener Lu Wants To Know. Listener Melissa wants to learn about what I eat along the way and lounge food. Micah and I dive a bit deeper into the food experiences onboard and on the ground. Listener Chris provides some follow-up about his trip to Japan in the '90s. In the new segment Listener Lu Wants To Know, she asks Micah about The Kitchen in Freedom, Maine. (I guess this really will be a foodie-based show!) Micah introduces us to some more music, Singapore by Tom Waits, and then we talk about my two non-consecutive adventure days in Singapore. Listener Matt and I biked around the Island and we finally able to enjoy a Singapore Sling at the Raffles Hotel. On these 4 segments to and from Singapore, I was able to fly in every class of service. Economy, Premium Economy and Polaris Class. And we get to talk about food. Did I mention the food in Singapore is great!

We answer listener mail, play in interview with Listener Matt, introduce a new segment called Listener Lu wants to know, and we talk about what I pack on my trips and generally try to catch up with things before my epic back to back to back trip to Singapore. Thanks once again to all of our listeners and especially our international listeners. Please write in and let us know how you found the show and why you listen. We love hearing from you!!! On episode 22, Micah and I comment on listener feedback from listener Grant, and listener Chris. Listener Grant is still confused over how United calculates Frequent Flyer Miles and Million Miler Miles... and I don't blame him. Its confusing. Listener Chris successfully answers Micah's trivia question and is awarded a special prize. He also talks about why people might be listening to the show and then he recalls seeing the South African cooling towers on an episode of The Amazing Race. Micah talks about Jean Shepherd and the features of PocketCast. We then talk about my adventures in Singapore, two whole days worth, and my air travels getting there and back. Fortunately the Singapore Grand Prix was going on... but unfortunately the Long Bar at the Raffles Hotel was very crowded and I never got my picture of the Singapore Sling mixing machine. That will have to wait until next trip.

On episode 20, Micah and I comment on listener feedback from Listener Lu (our Social Media Director), and listener Sarah. Listener Lu asks about clarification on why I had to call United to have my miles correct. I discuss the differences between frequent flyer miles and million miler miles. They are calculated different and they are tracked differently. Listener Sarah asks about the makeup of our audience and Micah and I go into detail and share all the statistical information have on you guys, our listeners. So of the numbers are interesting! Micah and I then discuss the prelude of my return trip to South Africa. There is so much content, we had to break it up into two parts. In Part 1, we discuss Luxury Leisure travelers and how they are affecting ticket pricing as well as the issues facing first part of my Journey to South Africa. During Part2, we will discuss the actual trip and activities while in South Africa and the Passenger experience.

On episode 19, Micah and I comment on listener feedback from Claire, Gustav and our balloonatic friend Grant. Clair asks about the new construction at Changi airport and how they were able to build the new structure at an active airport without disturbing existing operations. Listener Gustav asks about us being pilots. Hint: We aren't and it's probably safer that way!. And finally listener Grant wants talks about his flying experiences on the A350 and A380... two aircraft I still haven't flown on. Micah and I then discuss my return trip to Singapore! It wouldn't be a flight experience on United and this trip was no exception. Listen to what happened and the very pleasant resolution. Oh, there was also a parking issue that hopefully will be resolved soon. I'm sure we will address that in episode 20.

On episode 18, Micah and I comment on listener feedback from listeners Vin, Paul and Lu. Vin writes in about Southwest airlines lack of luggage tracking. Listener Paul asks about our favorite aircraft and who we would like to have on the show as a guest. Hint: NASA figures into our answers. And finally listener Lu wants the details on #surprisemom. Apparently, I didn't talk enough about mom and her reactions to my surprise visit. Micah and I then discuss the details of my back to back trips to Lihue, Hawaii. It was my first time to the Garden Island. I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn because they had a protected area to go snorkeling. I was also privileged to fly with some great United flight attendants! Thanks once again to all of our listeners and especially our international listeners. Please write in and let us know how you found the show and why you listen. We love hearing from you!!! On episode 17, Micah and I talk about how I miscalculated the requirements for achieving 1K status this year and how I "had" to take a surprise trip to see mom in Florida. I seem to have forgotten about the dollar requirement for 1K status and I wanted to have it for my upcoming flight to Singapore as I will have a better chance for an upgrade. Therefore, I decided to #surprisemom. It was a very quick surprise trip to Florida to visit with mom... and wow, was she most certainly surprised when I walked through the front door!

On episode 16, Micah and I comment on listener feedback from listeners Marc-Alexandre and Lisa. Marc-Alexandre asks about not always flying on United and the environmental impact of my flying. Lisa can't believe I don't remember Land Shark from Saturday Nite Live. Micah and I then talk about the devaluation of frequent traveler programs and the democratization of Lounges. Then we discuss the 'Houston we have a podcast' show where they talk about women in STEM, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. I add my 2 pennies on how I always promoted women when I was Associate Producer on the Airplane Geeks podcast. I strongly feel as though it's everyones responsibility to highlight woman and show girls they can do anything. Aviation doesn't have to be a male only industry! Sometimes girls just need to see someone doing a STEM related job and then they can envision themselves doing the same job. We finish the show talking about the courier services I am offering and the two people who have chosen to fly with me to Africa and Zambia on upcoming trips. It will be lots of fun being their tour guide! But first, next up for me are two quick trips to Hawaii and then a courier trip to Singapore.

Ruben asks if we will continue the show after I reach my goal. Micah and I then talk about why I few up to Sacramento on Southwest Airlines and not United along with my bags flying for free. We talk about the passenger experience and how Southwest celebrated Shark Week. Thanks once again to all of our listeners and especially our international listeners. Please write in and let us know how you found the show and why you listen. We love hearing from you!!! In episode 14, Micah and I comment on listener feedback from listeners Lu and Vin. We talk about our tips and tricks for flight preparation, medical concerns, and staying healthy in flight. Micah also tells the story about how we first met ... it was through the Airplane Geeks Podcast. Then I get to turn the tables and interview Micah. As I'm not traveling over the summer, I thought it would be a good idea for our listeners to get to better know Micah. During our conversations, he talks about his family and especially his mom, Harriott. (I so wish I had the opportunity to meet this incredible lady!) Micah tells stories about his flying adventures with his mom and I get to surprise him with some rapid fire questions. Thanks once again to all of our listeners and especially our international listeners. Please write in and let us know how you found the show and why you listen. We love hearing from you!!! In episode 13, Micah and I comment on listener feedback from Uli (Why and when is the best time to fly... what is our preferred time of the day to fly?) and Chris (Constructive criticism, German security confiscating my battery / charger device, and the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978.) We then talk about my trip to Philadelphia on American Airlines. Yes, I few on American and passed up on the opportunity to earn United Mileage Plus miles! Listen to the show to understand why I chose not to get closer to my Lifetime 1K status. We also discuss our international listeners and ask all listeners to write in and let us know why you listen and how you first learned about us? We give a huge shoutout and thanks to our new contributors to the show, Hendrik and Phillip! Thank you so much for helping us offset the costs of producing the show! In episode 12, I finally give credit to the Madalitso Youth Choir for their opening music and song. I really messed up by not doing this sooner and I apologize to them for my oversight. In the show, Micah and I comment on listener feedback and then we talk about the end of Covid testing to enter the US, we discuss the use of Apple Air Tags in luggage while traveling, and then we talk about the different classes of service on airlines and how they have changed over the years. We end the show talking about creative use of Hilton and IHG Credit Card Benefits Again, opening music is provided by the Madalitso Youth Choir as they sing their Welcome Song, recorded at the lobby of The Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia. In Part 2 of this African journey, we cover what went right and what went wrong with United... including a funny story with a new International flight attendant. In episode 10, Micah and I discuss my trip to South Africa and Zambia. In Part 1, we focus on the non-United parts of this trip as the United experience was simply too painful and fresh to cover. We want to focus on the positives and discuss the other aspects of the trip... including some of the bookings and land activities. This was my first trip to Zambia and seeing / experiencing Victoria Falls. On this trip, I was also traveling with another couple, friends of mine for over 30 years! In this show, we also answer listener mail by addressing the economics of this project, where the money is coming from and the expected benefits. Basically, we discuss the math behind the project. In episode 11, Part 2, we will cover what went right and what went wrong with United... so please check back for that episode!

In episode 9, Micah and I discuss my surprise trip to see mom for Mother's Day, her Birthday, and her wedding anniversary. She had no idea I was showing up and I almost scared her to death! We also discuss the lack of ground staff at Newark and how a great trip turned into a multi-hour delay... simply because United didn't have enough people scheduled to work. For the first time in the show, we talk about listener feedback. There were a lot of great comments, some positive and some negative. However, they were all great and I agree with all of them. This is a journey for me in producing this show and listener feedback will only make it better. Therefore, keep 'em coming!

In episode 8, Micah and I discuss my recent flight on Southwest where I flew from Burbank to Sacramento. It was a short flight and I learned a lesson... when flying on Southwest, you don't earn United miles... Actually, I knew that but I explain why I flew on Southwest for this part of my Journey. We also discussed masks, similarities of flying to Hawaii and Europe on single aisle aircraft, and we have a new Patrion member...

In episode 7, Micah and I discuss my adventures of flying to Hawaii, twice, over 2 days. Yes, that's right, I flew to Hawaii, two Islands, twice within 48 hours. Sadly, I wasn’t able to have sand between my toes nor dip my them in the ocean. I never left the airports coming or going.

In episode 6, Micah and I discuss my Italian vacation... 2 years delayed. And because the flight was on United, we have to talk about the customer service / experiences in Newark, NJ. I’m sure it’s not how United would like passengers to experience Newark.

This is the second part of the show where Micah and I discuss our trip to England. Each of us had a bit of an adventure on our next flights. Micah returned to the US and I continued on to Austria. Because the flights were on United, we had an adventure with the phone systems… along with other issues.

In episode 4, Micah and I discuss my quick trip to South Africa. Basically, it was a long weekend, visiting with a friend. The good news, I found a very inexpensive business class ticket. As this was my first long distance flight, I thought I would treat myself.

In episode 3, Micah and I discuss my first trip to Florida... however, it had a bit of a twist as I had to return to California to cover the Norther Pacific Airways Livery reveal for the Airplane Geeks podcast. Therefore, it was two trips in one. The best way to accumulate miles!
