What does it truly mean to "make it" as a tennis player? In this episode, I delve into this question with Belgian player Kimmer Coppejans, a former junior French Open champion who reached the top 100 for a brief period. Kimmer shares his journey through the highs and lows of professional tennis, including the mental challenges he faced, such as the yips and the struggle to regain confidence after injuries. Last week I got to spend the week at the Tecnifibre junior training camp in Valencia. Tecnibifre brought 5 of their juniors running from 11-16 years of age along with their parents and coaches for a week-long training camp. Their objective for to push the players outside their comfort zone on and off the court as well as give them advice which will be invaluable in their junior career. Tecnifibre wants to help these players as much as possible make the transition to the senior game. Leading the on-court sessions was former world number 32 Pablo Andujar and there also was former world number 41 Kenneth Carlsen who was there as a coach with a player. Both were so nice, full of advice, open to any questions and told great stories of life as a junior and on the tour. This episode is them talking about their experience as a Junior, lessons they learned, advice for the juniors and the 5 juniors who got to ask them a question. This week is a bit different to our usual weekly interviews. Recently I was away at the IMG Future Stars which features some of the best under 12's in the world. With an idea from a previous guest I decided to document what I find makes these great tennis kids so good. I was there for a full week and it wasn't a usual tournament where the players and team would leave early if beaten so I got a good chance to watch/learn and listen and gather my thoughts. These may not be new ideas but they are definitely a reminder of why these kids are so good. A big thanks to IMG for having me at the event and to the Tatoi Club in Athens for offering their beautiful facilities. I hope you enjoy the episode. Fabio Have you seen the Functional Tennis Saber? With Roland Garros currently on, it's great timing to have the youngest ever Roland Garros men's champ in the open era on the show, Michael Chang. I initially saw Michael at the IMG Future Stars event in Greece and asked him to come on the show, it's taken a few weeks but it happened!! We chatted about the famous match with Ivan Lendl in the 4th round where Micael cramped, hit under arm serve and was about to retire in the 5th and more. He talks about junior tennis, playing Sampras from 8 years old and offers advice for tennis parents. I hope you enjoy the episodes. A very interesting episode this week with Goran Novakovic. Goran founded the Ten-Pro Global Junior Tour which I only became aware of recently. Goran tells us how it came about and the major difference between his tour and other international junior tours. It's really interesting and I wish I was a junior again and could play in these tournaments. Major talking points: How did the Ten Pro events come about Shortcomings from regular Junior International Events What is the Ten Pro Format? Are draws seeded or is there a ranking system? Is it invite-only? Linda Fruhvirtova How many events are hosted and where? How do you finance Ten Pro? The entry fee to take part What lessons has Goran learned from running Ten Pro events? This week I chat with JY Aubone. Former college player, JY quickly got into coaching and got the opportunity to coach a future top 20 tennis player; Reilly Opelka! After a first experience with the giant American, JY had to split his relationship as Reilly couldnโt offer him a full-time job as a coach. Jean Yves then went back to his studies and worked for a bank until the day he got a call from the USTA, offering a full-time job as Reillyโs coach on the tour. This healthy relationship enabled Reilly to enter the top 20 on the ATP Tour. At the end of 2021, JY became a dad and took the decision to lower his hours with Reilly. Since Jean Yves has created his own platform of coaching and offers his services to anyone from anywhere in the world. Analyzing statistics as well as footage of your matches, JY advises you with his experience. We touch on his journey to becoming the coach of one of the best American tennis players, on his best and worst moments on tour with Reilly, the working process with his athlete, and his personal life as a dad.
