It has been a very busy week around the hockey world and for the Seattle Kraken. Now that the dust has settled, John, Andy, and Darren have a lot to recap and consider, and they do just that on this week's episode of the Sound Of Hockey Podcast. The guys start with a breakdown of Seattle's biggest free agent signings and give their thoughts on what the team did as a whole. They also discuss Ron Francis's closing press conference on free agency day and the reports that Eddie Olczyk could be joining the Kraken organization . After lots of Kraken talk, the guys shift their attention to the NHL as a whole, giving time to the Matthew Tkachuk situation in Calgary and Johnny Gaudreau's departure from that team. They also do an "Interesting or Carry On" for free-agent signings and trades throughout the league. They close the show with Weekly One-Timers and Tweets of the Week. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!

This has been and will continue to be an extremely busy couple of weeks for the Seattle Kraken. They followed up an awesome draft by bringing all their prospects in for development camp, which remains underway. That camp coincides with the deadline for qualifying restricted free agents (Seattle opted not to offer contracts to Ryan Donato , Haydn Fleury, Daniel Sprong, or Dennis Cholowski). It also coincides with free agency opening on Wednesday. With all this in mind, John, Andy, and Darren try to talk you off the ledge a bit about the players that are (likely) not being brought back by trying to help you understand the big picture of these decisions. An important piece of that is the many quality players that will be available in free agency, so they also help you prep for that. Also on this episode, the guys will take a journey around the league to bring you up to speed on decision (trades, qualifying offers, etc.) that are being made around the league. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! The Seattle Kraken season is now officially over. The games have been played, the lockers have been cleaned out, and the end-of-conference press conferences have been had. On this episode of the Sound Of Hockey Podcast, John, Andy, and Darren will bring you up to date on all the last tidbits of the franchise's inaugural season. Meanwhile, the Stanley Cup Playoffs are also now in full swing, which means this show moving toward the offseason is going to shift back to its roots as a general hockey podcast. The biggest piece of general hockey news from this past week just so happened to be Louie Domingue's in-game meal for Game 1 of Pittsburgh's series against the Rangers, so that gets plenty of discussion. After diving into Domingue's culinary choices, the guys shift to a Mailbag from listeners, which covers several different Kraken-related topics. Finally, the show moves to segments, which this week include You Don't See That Every Day, Weekly One-Timers, and Tweets of the Week. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!

It's been an eventful week for the Seattle Kraken and their fans, as No. 2 overall draft pick Matty Beniers signed his entry-level contract and made his NHL debut against the Calgary Flames. The news generated a ton of buzz around Seattle, and Beniers lived up to the hype in his first official showing. The Kraken have also played four games since the last episode, so John, Andy, and Darren break down those contests before moving to a rare "Mail Bag" segment, which got some great participation from listeners. After closing the mail bag, Darren discusses the NCAA Frozen Four, which ended with Denver University as national champion. He also talks about the outcome of the Hobey Baker Award and what is happening with players leaving college to sign in the NHL. Eventually, the guys shift to segments, which this week feature Bad Boys, You Don't See That Every Day, Weekly One-Timers, and Tweets of the Week. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!

The good news... correction, the GREAT news is that Joey Daccord is back on Sound Of Hockey for his second appearance, and he is once again electrifying! The bad news is that Darren has COVID. But that's ok, because he has a great time talking to Joey (via Zoom, obvi), and that makes everything better. The boys are confident that you will love this second interview with Daccord, who shares some awesome stories about playing in Charlotte, getting called up to Seattle, and being part of the Kraken's home opener. Before the interview, John, Andy, and Darren recap the Kraken games against Los Angeles, Vegas, and Dallas, then give some general NHL news. After the interview, they shift the show into segments, with the first being an NCAA Frozen Four edition of Games on the Radar. They then move to Goalie Gear Corner, Weekly One-Timers, Tweets of the Week, and Three Stars. It's a battle this week, but this show is a very fun one. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!

The guys record Episode 181 of the Sound Of Hockey Podcast fresh off a win for Matty Beniers and Michigan, sending that team to the NCAA Frozen Four. The win over Quinnipiac means Beniers watch has been delayed for another week. In the interim, there's plenty of Kraken hockey to watch and talk about (though there were only two games to discuss prior to this episode). One thing worth noting is a hot start by Daniel Sprong after he was acquired at the NHL Trade Deadline. After a hearty dose of Kraken and NCAA talk, John, Andy, and Darren shift to break down the Evgenii Dadonov fiasco in Vegas. They then move into their segments, which this week include Weekly One-Timers, Tweets of the Week, and Three Stars. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!

The first NHL Trade Deadline in the history of the Seattle Kraken is now in the rearview, and the Sound Of Hockey Podcast has a LOT to discuss this week. General manager Ron Francis moved Calle Jarnkrok, Mark Giordano, Colin Blackwell, Jeremy Lauzon, Mason Appleton, and Marcus Johansson, and collected a boatload of draft picks. On this episode, hear all about what this means for the future of the franchise and how the team performed in general during this chaotic period. Aside from plenty of deadline talk about the Kraken, the guys also discuss what happened around the rest of the league by way of "Interesting or Carry On?" Before all that, they break down the two recent Kraken games against the Lightning and Red Wings and chat about what's happening down on the farm. The Men's NCAA Tournament is getting underway this week, so there's also a fair dose of college hockey talk, plus some Serious Business, Weekly One-Timers, and Three Stars. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!

Just kidding. We promise the guys don't *actually* talk about Russell Wilson that much on this latest episode of the Sound Of Hockey Podcast... but they do mention it. Of course, the Wilson news was overshadowed by Jared McCann's five-year contract extension , which John, Andy, and Darren *do* breakdown at length after discussing the last four Kraken games. They also discuss some of the other recent roster moves and the Ron Francis presser . That leads nicely into the return of "Translating Ron Francis," which is always a good time, as well as some trade deadline predictions and praise for Alison Lukan. Once the Kraken talk dies down, the guys transition into segments, which include You Don't See That Every Day, Weekly One-Timers, and Three Stars. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!

It's a long episode, but a fantastic one. This week, the Sound Of Hockey welcomes the coaches of both local WHL teams, as those teams prepare to play one another in the Battle of the Sound at Climate Pledge Arena on Saturday. With Dennis Williams of the Everett Silvertips, the guys discuss the continued success of that organization, the high-end prospects that have played for them, and the many hats that Williams wears as both the GM and head coach. Then O'Dette expresses his excitement to finally be a friend of the pod and shares the differences between coaching in the ECHL versus the WHL. He also talks about the skill on his current team and the impact that some new additions have made this season. Both interviews are great. Aside from those interviews, you'll also hear some Kraken talk, as John, Andy, and Darren discuss Seattle's recent fruitless Canadian road trip and a strange home game against the New York Islanders. John also shares some tidbits from a recent presentation made by Tod and Tim Leiweke about the state of the franchise. After the interviews, the guys shift to segments, which feature You Don't See That Every Day, Weekly One-Timers, and Three Stars. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!

They then dive right into Kraken talk, recapping an eventful week for the team, which sandwich a nice win and a skills exhibition between two rather stinky losses. John, Andy, and Darren then shift their focus to the NHL as a whole, which had some big stories over the past week like coach firings, Jack Eichel returning, and Tyler Toffoli getting traded. They then move into segments, which cover a lot of ground this week. Segments include Bad Boys, Goalie Gear Corner , You Don't See That Every Day , and Weekly One-Timers. With no Kraken games to talk about (this show was recorded on Wednesday before Seattle faced Arizona), John, Andy, and Darren instead spend time breaking down the women's game between Team USA and Team Canada at the Winter Olympics. They then shift to some general Kraken talk, including taking a look back at the first half and making some predictions for the second half. Next, the guys recap some of the All-Star Game festivities and Gary Bettman's press conference at that event, before moving onto their segments. The guys cover a LOT in this episode of the Sound Of Hockey Podcast, and in the process, they introduce you to the newest member of the Seattle Kraken, Karson Kuhlman. Kuhlman was claimed off waivers from the Boston Bruins last week, so he talks about the whirlwind it has been to get to Seattle and get acclimated to his new team and city. He also shares some thoughts on playing for the UMD Bulldogs and the Bruins and explains why Darren is wrong about Duck, Duck, Grey Duck. Aside from the chat with Karson, the guys also dig into the last three Kraken games since the previous episode, in which Seattle won two out of three against the Sharks, Blues, and Panthers. John, Andy, and Darren are especially amped up about the outcome of the Florida game. They also talk about the Coachella Valley Firebirds jersey and Darren defends Jeremy Lauzon again. Before getting to the Kuhlman interview, they dig into the very difficult topic of racism in hockey, hoping that the conversation can fuel even the smallest change in a few folks out there. After the Kuhlman interview, the guys move on to their segments, which this week include Goalie Gear Corner , Weekly One-Timers, and Three Stars. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!

But despite the miserable spiral of the Kraken, the guys are feeling surprisingly optimistic about the future of the team. So, if you're a Kraken fan needing a lift, this is the podcast for you! This episode starts with some Wes McCauley silliness, followed by discussion about Kodak Black taking the hockey world by... storm. It then shifts to the outlook of the Kraken for quite a while, before turning to the hockey world as a whole. They also discuss some of the very cool off-ice developments that happened at Climate Pledge Arena during the Kraken game against the Vancouver Canucks. Once they've given plenty of attention to the Kraken, John, Andy, and Darren go outside of Seattle to share their thoughts on the cancellations of the IIHF World Junior Championship and the Women's U18 tournament. Don't look now, but the Seattle Kraken are suddenly cruising, having won four of their last five games, and the Sound Of Hockey Podcast is here to talk about it (because of course it is)! This episode starts with Darren needing to get something off his chest, so he dives right into a Get Off My Lawn, while Andy and John desperately try to calm him down. Then they get to their Kraken talk, which is plentiful. After beating Washington and Carolina at home, Seattle has been on the road, where it has beaten the Florida Panthers and Buffalo Sabres, but lost to the two-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning. There's lots to unpack from these victories, including an injury and an illness, impressive play by Will Borgen, and improved goaltending. Once the Kraken talk dies down, the guys tour around the NHL via Serious Business, where they discuss the waiving of Matt Murray and Evander Kane and the firing of Marc Bergevin and... well... pretty much everyone else in Montreal. Episode 161 of the Sound Of Hockey Podcast is here. Lots to break down for the guys this week, both from the Kraken perspective and from the hockey world in general. First, they dig in a bit on Seattle's first homestand and what they liked and didn't like from the team, as well as the experience of attending the games. They also share some updates on what's coming from the Kraken for the rest of the week. They then move on to the story that gripped the whole hockey world this past week, which was the Kyle Beach and Chicago Blackhawks situation. Interestingly, John, Andy, and Darren did not go into the show with the intention of talking about it that much, being that it has been discussed so broadly over the last week. But once they got talking about it, it was hard to stop. We then get an update of what's happening down on the farm, a Serious Business, Goalie Gear Corner , and Bad Boys. We also hear a Get Off My Lawn from Darren, who is irked that other larger outlets seem to have no issue stealing content. The show closes with Weekly One-Timers and Tweets of the Week. SUBSCRIBE! This very special BONUS EPISODE of the Sound Of Hockey Podcast is an instant classic. John, Andy, and Darren agree that Seattle Kraken netminder Joey Daccord is truly one of their favorite guests to ever appear on the show, so they hope you'll feel the same after listening. This episode is dedicated entirely to that interview, which runs longer than most guest segments, as the guys first dig into Joey's viral interview after his first-ever NHL win, then get into his hockey journey, his experiences at Arizona State, and his first impressions of playing for the Seattle Kraken. Darren can't help himself but to ask goalie-to-goalie about Joey's mental processes that he uses to perform consistently, and... of course... his gear. Here is the link to view Joey's mask , which he discusses in detail during the interview. It’s another (mostly) fun episode of Sound Of Hockey, filled with interesting factoids (but also some very sad discussion) and terrible puns. This week, Darren starts the show with a quick update on his goaltending-related mental state, which was discussed at length in Episode 151. Then the guys delve into the latest Seattle news, such as Matty Beniers returning to the University of Michigan and Antoine Bibeau being signed by the Kraken. On this week's Sound Of Hockey Podcast, the guys have a lot to get through from around the NHL and specifically within the Seattle Kraken organization, where three big-time free agents joined the ranks last week. So, John, Andy, and Darren break that down first and consider what those additions mean for the inaugural roster. They also share their thoughts on what the Kraken have put together in general, before moving on to the rest of the league. In talking about the rest of the NHL, with so many players on the move over the past couple weeks, the hosts take an approach of discussing only those teams and players who have created the most intrigue with their respective moves. It's like a pre-filtered version of "Interesting or Carry On." Segments on this episode include Weekly One-Timers and Tweets of the Week. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!

What, you thought the Sound Of Hockey Podcast was going to wait until AFTER the Seattle Kraken Expansion Draft to publish its next episode? Well, with the entire hockey world abuzz with discussion about the Expansion Draft protected lists that got released on Sunday, there was just no way that John, Andy, and Darren could have waited that long to bring you their reactions. This episode is a little more "from the hip" than regular episodes of the show, but the hosts do everything they can to touch on all of the big Seattle Kraken news from the past few days. Topics covered include the very chaotic pre-draft trade frenzy that closed Saturday, Ron Francis's latest media availability, and of course the protection lists. The review of the Expansion Draft protected lists largely comes by way of a game of "Interesting or Carry-On," but the guys are very careful to touch on all the biggest-named players that have been exposed for Wednesday's Expansion Draft. This show should bring you fully up to speed for that event. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!

So, at the beginning, you get John, Andy, and Darren's same-day reactions to the news, then you get a full episode of standard banter and good times. It's probably stated almost weekly, but seriously, super fun episode this week! John, Andy, and Darren have a lot to talk about, as there's been some great recent content on NHLtoSeattle.com, and hockey is inching ever closer to a return to play. Hockey is *almost* back, as news has broken this week that a new collective bargaining agreement and return to play plan could be ratified in the coming days. Lots of... uh... exciting stuff to break down here, and John, Andy, and Darren do their best to accomplish this. The guys also take a look at an article from The Athletic this week that utilizes the local knowledge of its writers to put together a mock expansion team on Seattle's behalf. This leads to a new gameshow from John, in which nobody wins. Also, at a listener's request, John, Andy, and Darren share a few of their favorite games to go back and watch in preparation for the NHL potentially returning on August 1st. Segments this week include Goalie Gear Corner , Weekly One-Timers, and Tweets of the Week. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!

Recognizing all that's happening in the world right now, the guys get a bit emotional on this week's episode of Sound of Hockey. It's been quite the week, as you know, and John, Andy, and Darren certainly did not want to avoid the topics at hand. Nonetheless, they hope that you get a bit of a mental break while listening to this episode, as there's some fun to be had as well. The guys interviewed Stu Barnes before things really escalated locally in Seattle, and it is a fantastic interview. Stu talks about his long and very successful NHL career, being a pro scout for NHL Seattle, and much more. You will definitely enjoy this interview. Sound of Hockey is still in quarantine, but that doesn't mean it will stop putting out great content! This week, John, Andy, and Darren welcome Jason Berger, Equipment Manager for the Tampa Bay Lightning, for a light-hearted look into his world working behind the scenes of an NHL franchise. With Jason, the guys take a journey down the road that he followed to get to the NHL, which coincidentally led him to Seattle at one point. Welp... that escalated quickly. It's a new world, and Sound of Hockey is here to just give you a bit of an escape from it. The guys recognize that there's no longer hockey to talk about, so instead, they're going to focus on interviews for the foreseeable future. The first guest in this sequence of interviews is Kwame Mason, who directed and produced the documentary film, Soul On Ice, a story of inclusivity and the history of diversity in hockey. John, Andy, and Darren discuss with Kwame his upbringing as a young, black hockey fan, and after a hiatus from the game, what got him back into it. They also consider what things NHL Seattle and the sport of hockey as a whole can do to be more inclusive, and Kwame gives an interesting take on the Don Cherry saga (who coincidentally appeared in Kwame's movie). Since the guys are changing things up to get through the days of quarantine, they would love to get your feedback. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!

FULL DISCLOSURE - Sound of Hockey recorded this episode on Monday night, before the extra crazy and scary coronavirus news started hitting about leagues canceling, travel being banned, etc., so please take that into account when listening. That said, this is a good opportunity to mostly escape from the COVID19 talk, though it has to at least be briefly discussed. On Episode 77, John, Andy, and Darren welcome Mike Snee, Executive Director of College Hockey Inc., to learn about his organization and talk all things college hockey. With Mike, the guys discuss such topics as what College Hockey Inc. does, the feasibility of adding additional Division I NCAA programs, and the famed Minnesota Moose SPAMboni. It's been a weird week in Seattle, so the Sound of Hockey guys are here to hopefully brighten your day a bit with some mindless hockey talk (and yes, they do briefly discuss the coronavirus and the impact it's having on the local area, as well as the hockey world). In this episode, there's a decent amount of NHL Seattle chatter, as ground has officially been broken on the practice facility, and a new partnership has been formed between Sound Transit and the team. There was also some news about there... not... being... news about ticket prices. Aside from those things, John, Andy, and Darren take a look at some of the more impressive NHL performances from the month of February, give lots of shoutouts to loyal listeners, and re-think the re-thinking of the Weekly One-Timers sound effect. Segments this week include You Don't See That Every Day, Get Off My Lawn, and Let's Get Quizzical. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW! WASH YOUR HANDS!

In Episode 73, Darren gets really carried away with segues, but fortunately Andy has returned from his brief hiatus to... egg Darren on even more. John, meanwhile, listens on in disgust. Fun episode this week, nonetheless, as the gang gets back together to break down a couple of pretty big pre-deadline trades (one of which requires significant #Minnutiae). The guys also consider which other big-name players could soon be on the move as the deadline approaches. Also in this episode, an update on local WHL shenanigans, Vegas moving its new AHL affiliate closer to home, and a pretty solid dose of college hockey talk. Sound of Hockey is a back to a more traditional format this week, breaking down the latest in Seattle, CHL/WHL, and NHL news. The biggest bombshell of the week came from Darren’s beloved Minnesota Wild, which opted to relieve General Manager Paul Fenton of his duties after just 14 months at the helm of the franchise. Sure, it’s probably #Minnutiae, but deal with it, because it’s a pretty big and interesting story, and John, Andy, and Darren do a good job discussing what led to the surprising firing. In addition to the Wild news, the guys discuss a big-time hiring in the CHL, share their thoughts from the World Junior Summer Showcase, and rip on the Ottawa Senators (again). WE GOT A GM! …And it’s none other than Ron Francis, AKA Ronnie Franchise, who comes to NHL Seattle with actual GM experience, two Stanley Cups, and a Hall of Fame playing career on his resume. In this episode of Sound of Hockey, aside from tons of reactionary discussion from Andy, John, and Darren about the hiring, Francis himself actually makes a brief cameo, as Andy had a few minutes to chat with him one-on-one following his introductory press conference. Aside from all the GM talk, of which there is plenty, the guys also discuss an interesting beer league incident that occurred this past week in an effort to determine whether or not Darren was in the wrong. Featured in this episode is USA National Team Development Program head coach John Wroblewski, who the guys talked to just after a record EIGHT of his players had been drafted in the first round. While talking to Wroblewski, Buffalo Sabres GM Jason Botterill comically interrupts, as does legendary TSN analyst Craig Button. You won’t want to miss this one. Also in this episode, Weekly One-Timers come a bit earlier than normal for the sake of chronology, but the guys make up for it with a robust breakdown of the Draft, the trades that occurred over the weekend, and LOTS more. The season is officially over, but Sound of Hockey is far from its own offseason. With the NHL Draft just around the corner (and all three of your favorite podcast hosts planning to be in attendance), it was the perfect time to have ESPN's Chris Peters back on the show for another enlightening interview. With their first official recurring guest, the guys break down the prospect pool and what to look for at the big event in Vancouver. Chris is a never-ending well of prospect-related information, and he demonstrates that in this interview. Also in this episode, the guys spend plenty of time doing their own prepping for the Draft, as well as breaking down Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final (the ultimate #Cupdate), and sharing who had the most successful victory parade performances in St. Louis. Segments this week include Explain It To Us, Weekly One-Timers, and Tweets of the Week. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!

Episode 40 of Sound of Hockey is here! It’s relatively a bit shorter than most episodes, but it’s still just as sweet with some good chuckles and rants along the way. With just one game left on the NHL docket, and it being a Stanley Cup Final Game 7, the guys are quite excited about how things have shaken out in these Playoffs. This leads to some good banter about the continuing officiating questions, the punchability of Brad Marchand, and some disdain for Jenna Fischer and John Krasinski’s ongoing “feud.” This week, we also get a nice Seattle update from Andy and John about some new arenas being built in the area and everybody freaking out over the colors on the future NHL team’s new website. Plus, Cupdates, Get Off My Lawn, Weekly One-Timers, and a solid Tweets of the Week segment. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW! BUY A T-SHIRT!

On the latest Sound of Hockey, the guys have opted to simply keep the ECHL's Kelly Cup... Oh, wait, that's the Colorado Eagles, who have actually made the calculated decision to not return the championship trophy. Lots of Seattle talk in this episode as well, as John breaks down Tod Leiweke's recent AMA session, and gives a review of a packed NHLtoSeattle watch party and a reaction to Dave Tippett's official hiring as head coach of the Edmonton Oilers. In this episode, you'll also get a nice dose of #Cupdates, from AHL to NHL, multiple "Get Off My Lawns," and a solid Goalie Gear Corner. Plus, the regular segments like Weekly One-Timers and Tweets of the Week. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!

It's a BIG one this week, folks! In Episode 38, Sound of Hockey is joined by four-time Stanley Cup hoisting, Vezina winning, Hall of Fame netminder Grant Fuhr! With Grant, the guys discuss his career, how goaltending has evolved since he entered the NHL, and his new documentary, Making Coco: The Grant Fuhr Story, among many other topics. Oh, and by the way, Darren manages to squeeze in a Goalie Gear Corner segment... featuring Grant Fuhr... one of the best goalies ever... what a world. Aside from the great interview, there's plenty of news to discuss this week, with Dave Tippett heading to Edmonton, Memorial Cup wrapping up, and Calder Cup in full swing. Plus, some IIHF World Championships-related chuckles, and a San Jose Sharks post-mortem. Don't worry, the guys also break down Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final and still make it through You Don't See That Every Day, Weekly One-Timers, and Tweets of the Week. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!

With the Stanley Cup Final on the horizon, and Game of Thrones now controversially over, Sound of Hockey comes through with another solid episode. This week, the guys give you some non-NHL news (Seattle stuff, Memorial Cup update, IIHF World Championships chatter, AHL Calder Cup conversation), before diving headlong into the Conference Finals. Naturally, the overlooked handpass that led to a Sharks overtime game-winning goal gets plenty of discussion, as John predictably defends his beloved San Jose squad. Meanwhile, Andy and Darren attack the necessity of expanded video review, and try to come up with ways to solve this newfound problem, without being too knee-jerk reactionary. The guys also discuss the shocking rumblings out of Ottawa that Patrick Roy is being considered for their coaching job. Finally, the show moves into its segments, with the triumphant return of Goalie Gear Corner, You Don't See That Every Day, Tweets of the Week, and John gets HILARIOUSLY duped in Weekly One-Timers. We're getting DEEP in the NHL Playoffs, and Sound of Hockey has no shortage of thoughts about the latest controversies, Game 7 dramas, and absurd soundbites (of which there have been many). The guys are recovering from their weekend Conference Finals watch party at Petoskey's, which leads to some struggles in the early going. Fortunately, they recover to discuss the latest Seattle news and give an update on the CHL, before diving headlong into the wild and wacky NHL Playoffs, which have now reached their penultimate round. Among the topics this week, John, Andy, and Darren break down Brad Marchand's continuing antics, Vladimir Putin's outstanding hockey skills, and Sergei Bobrovsky's condo. Segments include a season-ending Re:Torts, Weekly One-Timers, Explain It To Us, and Tweets of the Week. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!

Episode 35 of Sound of Hockey is a long one because, well, the guys have a LOT to talk about right now. This episode starts with what will be the final "in-season" Re:Torts of the year, being that the CBJ's have been eliminated since this one was recorded. The guys also break down Don Cherry's latest comments about the Carolina Hurricanes and their jerk-ish ways. SPOILER: Don still doesn't like them. Next, you'll get a beefy Seattle update and a review of the WHL draft (plus the chaos that ensued), before a spirited discussion of the latest groundbreaking news in women's hockey. When the guys finally dig in to the NHL Playoffs, you'll hear about some of the intriguing gamesmanship that has been happening in Round 2, before getting your dose of Weekly One-Timers and even an introduction to a couple new segments. Sound of Hockey just couldn't sit on this awesome interview with Sean McIndoe of TheAthletic, Puck Soup, Biscuits (a Hockey Podcast), and " The Down Goes Brown History of the NHL " fame, so the guys decided to do a special bonus episode! With Sean, the guys discuss why he loves taking such a historically-driven approach to writing about hockey. They also go in depth on the Columbus Blue Jackets' sweep of the Tampa Bay Lightning and where those teams go from here. Plus, plenty of discussion about Sean's life as a Maple Leafs fan in a world where that team is suddenly competitive, what happens next in the NHL Playoffs, and just how rigged the NHL Draft Lottery actually is. It's the most wonderful time of the year, and the Sound of Hockey is giddy with excitement. That's right, the NHL Playoffs have officially arrived, and your favorite podcast hosts are here to talk about it. In Episode 31, we get a solid breakdown of which first-round series should be watched, which teams (other than Tampa Bay) could be favorites, and which teams could be darkhorses. Plus, lots of talk about the latest twirl of the NHL coaching carousel, as Joel Quenneville was officially hired by the Florida Panthers in a somewhat shocking move in the past few days. A few other coaches were meanwhile relieved of their posts, so the guys consider which options may be out there to fill vacancies. John also gives us the latest on the CWHL/NWHL saga, as well as some interesting Seattle tidbits, Andy gives a WHL playoff update, and Darren leads a robust round of Weekly One-Timers. Other segments include "You Don't See That Every Day" and "Games on the Radar." SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!

Another fun show! Episode 30 features a very interesting interview with Devan McConnell, who is the Head of Hockey Performance and Sport Science at UMass Lowell. Devan shares some fascinating insight on what it takes to help high-level athletes reach peak performance, and some of the technologies and philosophies that go into it. You will definitely enjoy this interview. Also in this episode, with John away at Miracle On Ice Fantasy Camp in Lake Placid, Andy and Darren are left to their own devices for a lot of the show (which John will OBVIOUSLY regret). Fortunately for John, Andy and Darren are nice enough to loop him in for a phone call, on which they discuss John’s experiences at Camp, and the recent news that the CWHL will be disbanding. Plus, Darren recaps his visit to hockey hotbed Montreal, plenty of conversation about the clarifying NHL playoff race, a WHL playoff update, and a NCAA Tournament update. Segments on Episode 30 include Goalie Gear Fighting Corner/You Don’t See That Every Day (combined), Weekly One-Timers (which is a struggle without John’s sound effects), and Games On the Radar. This… is… a… BIG one! On Episode 29 of Sound of Hockey, Greg Wyshynski of ESPN, ESPN On Ice, Puck Soup, Marek Versus Wyshynski, and Puck Daddy fame stops by the pod, and he’s predictably AWESOME! With Greg, the guys discuss all things sports media and his expectations for the Seattle franchise, and he even does one of his infamous impressions, which you certainly won’t want to miss. It’s a very fun interview, so prepare for some chuckles. Also in this episode, Andy gives a quick update on WHL playoffs, which are happening now, John gives a recap of the CWHL’s Clarkson Cup Final and the Women’s Frozen Four, and Darren breaks down the upcoming NCAA Men’s Hockey Tournament (the TRUE March Madness!). Oh, and don’t worry, there’s plenty of general NHL talk in this one as well, with the layoffs just around the corner. Segments on this show include the long-awaited return of Get Off My Lawn, plus Weekly One-Timers, Games on the Radar, and a new… well… pseudo… segment. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!

The latest Sound of Hockey is a fun one! The guys reveal who was the tipsy host on last week's episode, and the answer might surprise you! Next, they dive into a WHL playoff primer, then a NHL playoff debate over who will be the last teams to qualify, and they even give a NWHL Final recap. John also shares some of the hilarious backlash he received from fans of opposing teams online for daring to indicate that Seattle might be able to actually get good players in the 2021 Expansion Draft. Later, the guys partake in a special St. Patrick's Day edition of Goalie Gear Corner, before moving onto other great segments like "You Don't See That Every Day," Weekly One-Timers, and Games on the Radar. Oh, and they make fun of Don Cherry quite a bit. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!

It's a gigantic (and slightly tipsy) episode of Sound of Hockey this week, as the guys ended up recording the bulk of the episode following some post-SeaHAC college sodas... See if you can figure out who had the most! Featured on this episode is Alison Lukan, an outstanding writer for TheAthletic who covers the Columbus Blue Jackets with an analytical flair. From Alison, John and Darren learn how she uses that analytical approach to tell her story, while still connecting with a broad hockey audience, and even how she uses her knowledge to connect with John Tortorella. She also gives tons of great Torts anecdotes and gives her opinions on the CBJ trades, so you won't want to miss this interview. Also in this episode, the guys give a thorough review of the fantastic event that was the Seattle Hockey Analytics Conference and what they took away from that, before eventually diving into such segments as "You Don't See That Every Day," "Weekly One-Timers," and "Games On the Radar." Plus plenty of general NHL talk, as always. This is a fun episode filled with chuckles. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!

There are lots of chuckles to be had on Episode 26 of Sound of Hockey! This week, Sound of Hockey breaks down a few big stories from around the NHL, including Jarome Iginla’s jersey being retired, which sparks a roaring debate about who will be the first Crapweasel with his number in the rafters. Also discussed is the Senators’ firing of Guy Boucher because… why not?… and also the less-than-triumphant return of John Tavares to Long Island. Plus, you will hear John’s breakdown of his fun hockey-centric trip to Boston, Andy’s recap of the latest Seattle-area WHL action, and lots of great segments, including (but not limited to) Goalie Gear Corner, You Don’t See That Every Day, and Weekly One-Timers. GIGANTIC EPISODE this week! Dave Christian, gold medalist from the 1980 Miracle on Ice team, 15-year NHL veteran, and member of the US Hockey Hall of Fame joins Sound of Hockey for a super fun interview. With Dave, the guys discuss his very successful - but sometimes overshadowed - NHL career, how Team USA prepped for the final game after beating the Soviets, and even about his experiences playing for the Minnesota Moose. Dave shares some fantastic stories from his long hockey career that you won't want to miss. Also in this episode, lots of fantastic post-trade-deadline banter, a WHL update, more John Tortorella zaniness, and Darren gets put in his place by a couple of listeners. It happened again! Don Cherry is really mad that the Carolina Hurricanes are having fun, and Sound of Hockey is here to analyze his antiquated analysis. In Episode 24, Andy gives a robust update on the WHL, where everybody is kung fu fighting these days. John also shares some recent speculation about how the Maple Leafs’ roster in 2021 could factor into the Seattle expansion draft, and pulls some data on American-born hockey players and how their numbers are trending in the NHL. Darren shares some of the latest NHL trades, and together, the guys break down those deals. Plus, our lovable hosts play a very literal game of Buy, Sell, or Hold (in which they determine if certain teams should be buyers at the upcoming trade deadline), before moving into Weekly One-Timers, featuring some interesting news out of Edmonton and Cory Schneider finally winning a game. They close out the show with “You Don’t See That Every Day” and “Games on the Radar.” SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!

The guys get a little bit ranty in Episode 22, in which they discuss a variety of hot-button issues (specifically Pierre McGuire’s cringeworthy introduction of Kendall Coyle Schofield on NBC Sports and a lack of current hockey coverage by mainstream media in the Seattle market). Don't worry, they do manage to keep their pants on, unlike a certain hockey player that wore #22 and a certain cartoon duck. John, Andy, and Darren break down some of the latest news from NHL Seattle, with the most noteworthy item being the naming of an AHL affiliate franchise apparently on the near horizon. They also analyze the blockbuster trades that sent Jake Muzzin to the Toronto Maple Leafs and Nick Bjugstad to the Pittsburgh Penguins, and share some of the chatter regarding additional high-profile trade targets at the upcoming deadline. Segments in this episode include Get Off My Lawn, Weekly One-Timers, and Games on the Radar. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!

HUMONGOUS EPISODE! It’s Episode 21 of Sound of Hockey (meaning the guys can finally enjoy a cold beer while recording!), and NHL.com 's Nick Cotsonika returns for a very fun interview. This show goes a little more in depth with Nick than the version a couple months ago, when Andy and Darren were shouting at him in a packed Henry’s Tavern. This time, Nick gets grilled about his experience at the All-Star Game and his feelings on the Jake Muzzin trade and Peter Chiarelli firing. He shares some awesome Scotty Bowman stories from his time covering the Detroit Red Wings, and also lets us in on his pick for Seattle (or maybe Edmonton?) GM. Oh, and he is of course put to the test in a challenging game of Buy, Sell, or Hold. Also in this episode, the fellas talk about the new technology displayed at the ASG and its potential, run through LOTS of solid Weekly One-Timers, and break down another… breakdown… in “You Don’t See That Every Day.” You’re going to like this one. On the latest episode of Sound of Hockey, NHLtoSeattle.com contributor Emily Jo joins to get “in the weeds” a bit in terms of hockey analytics, and also discusses the upcoming Seattle Hockey Analytics Conference, which will take place March 8th through 10th. With Emily Jo, the guys also have a good laugh about Air Force Coach Frank Serratore’s incredibly sarcastic rant about games ending in ties in his conference. Once Emily Jo departs, John, Andy, and Darren revisit their discussions from last week about a potential Seattle goal song—something that received a lot of attention from Sound of Hockey’s listeners this past week—as well as Andy’s outlandish claim that Rick Nash was one of the best players ever to not win a Stanley Cup. Also in this episode, Darren breaks down the Nino Niederreiter for Victor Rask trade, and the guys chuckle over the images of the KHL All-Star Game and drool over the first-place New York Islanders. In Seattle hockey news, John discusses an exciting opportunity for female hockey fans in the Puget Sound area, Andy gives a brief WHL update, and Darren shares his revelation for the perfect goal song for the new team… which quickly gets vetoed by John. Also in this episode, plenty of trade talk focusing on the Ducks, Stars, and Wild, a look at why there have been so many hat tricks, and a riveting labor negotiation update. BONUS EPISODE! The guys realized that it was going to be about a week and a half between episodes, and decided that was way too long to make you all wait. As such, they decided to give you a little something extra this week, with a SECOND EPISODE! On this bonus episode, John, Andy, and Darren break down NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman’s recent press conference that was held right here in Seattle, and they discuss some of the highlights of that event. They also react to the news tidbits that were released (either intentionally or unintentionally) by the head of the league, and share their opinions on a few of the questionable questions from the peanut gallery that day. They even... for the first time ever on Sound of Hockey... discuss the topic of a potential team name at length (spoiler: the team will most likely still be called Crapweasels). Also in this episode, a review of the new All-Star Game uniforms, a Blue-Jackets-centric version of Buy, Sell, or Hold, Goalie Gear Corner, Bi-Weekly One-Timers, and much more. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! It's Episode 18, which means we're of legal age to... I guess... like... vote, and stuff. Get excited! In the latest edition of Sound of Hockey, the guys give some tough love to their neighbors to the north, but specifically to Canadians that don't listen to the show (Canadians that listen to the show or are considering listening to the show are of course all wonderful, perfect humans). To kick off the episode, John has a quick and "riveting" NHL Seattle update. Then Andy rants about Elias Pettersson's latest injury and the play that caused it, before Darren leads a pretty lengthy and poignant discussion on the World Junior Championship, which wrapped up over the weekend with Team USA taking silver. Plenty of general NHL talk regarding teams that are streaking right now, plus Weekly One-Timers, Goalie Gear Corner, Get Off My Lawn, and of course, Games On Our Radar. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!

In the first episode of 2019 for Sound of Hockey, John, Andy, and Darren take a good look at the horse***t situation in Dallas, in which the Stars' CEO has taken some nasty shots at Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin. In junior hockey news, the guys discuss the huge trades made by the local Seattle/Everett WHL teams, and have a spirited chat about the World Junior Championship and some of its highlights so far (like Pitbull being played 14 times in one game and Team USA's miraculous comeback against Sweden). They also review the Winter Classic and have a debate on the relevance of the All-Star Game, before getting into such riveting segments as Goalie Gear Corner, You Don't See That Every Day, Weekly One-Timers, and even an impromptu Get Off My Lawn. Episode 15 of Sound of Hockey unintentionally features a lot of comical mascot talk. For some reason, John, Andy, and Darren just keep coming back to those fuzzy--and sometimes temperamental--creatures, because... well... why not? John remains on his week-long hockey odyssey and shares his experiences from Edmonton and Winnipeg. Meanwhile, back in Seattle, Andy and Darren break down their visit to Team USA's WJC Training Camp and explain why the Silvertips and Thunderbirds had the longest first period of all time (or so it felt). In a thrilling twist, the guys reveal a brand new segment, which you won't want to miss, before moving back into some of the old classics... Weekly One-Timers, Games On Our Radar, and perhaps even a couple of impromptu segment appearances. Lots of hearty laughs to be had in this episode. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!

CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?! Seattle has officially been awarded the 32nd NHL franchise, and John Barr, Andy Eide, and Darren Brown are here to tell you all about it! In Episode 13, Darren starts the show off with a VERY unique musical tribute to his co-host, John, for all of the incredible work that John put in to make the NHL coming to Seattle a reality (don't laugh at Darren, he tried really hard). Then the guys recap the events of December 4th and just how special they were, from the announcement itself, to the reaction of the community, to our politicians trash-talking Vancouver. During NHL Seattle’s party that day, Andy and Darren managed to get some live fan reactions from a few friends of the NHLtoSeattle cause, so those clips are in the show. Nick Cotsonika of NHL.com even drops by to give his two cents on the matter (spoiler, Nick doesn’t think Seattle will win the Cup in its first season). John also gives his review of seeing The Mighty Ducks for the first time ever. Then the guys dive into current NHL news, such as the hiring of Chuck Fletcher to be the GM of the Flyers, William Nylander finally signing with the Maple Leafs (thank God that’s over), and the big trade between the Blackhawks and Coyotes. Episode 12 is here, and the guys have lots to talk about after two coach firings, two very full slates of NHL games on the days before and after Thanksgiving, and one Gritty wedding crash. Darren has been on vacation in New York during recording, but refuses to miss a week #ForThePod! This week, the guys discuss the upcoming December 4th Board of Governors vote to determine whether or not Seattle will be granted an NHL hockey franchise, as well as what they expect to come out of that meeting. They also consider the various factors surrounding when the team will actually start, as lots of rumblings have been happening about a 2021 start as opposed to a 2020 start. Looking around the NHL, Andy, John, and Darren break down the coaching changes in Edmonton and St. Louis, examine the Sabres' awesome hot streak, and have their minds boggled at Patrik Laine’s scoring tear. Oh, and they make fun of Brian Burke for hating the Hurricanes’ “surge” celebration. Plus, Weekly One-Timers, Buy/Sell/Hold, and Games on the Radar. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!

Then after a bit of Seattle arena (and Vegas arena) talk, the guys head down a slightly different path by taking a look at the college hockey landscape, with focus on the awesome story associated with Arizona State's relatively new program and its quick progress. On the latest episode of Sound of Hockey, John, Andy, and Darren start by sharing their heartfelt love for Brad Marchand, who recently pulled yet another interesting stunt to get himself in hot water. On the Seattle front, John confesses that he's never seen The Mighty Ducks, when sharing about the upcoming SIFF film festival event. This leads to some spoilers of classic hockey films, because Andy just can't contain himself. Next, the guys dive into the LA Kings' firing of coach John Stevens and what it means for that franchise. After spending way too much time on the Kings, they then spend even more time on the Canucks, much to Darren's dismay, but eventually appease him with Goalie Gear Corner. In Weekly One-Timers, discussion topics include: -Jonathan Quick getting injured again -Slava Voynov applying for reinstatement (ew) -Yanni Gourde and Pekka Rinne getting contract extensions The show wraps with another rousing round of Buy, Sell, or Hold. They then slide into some Seattle talk, specifically about the news that the NHL already has 2020 realignment on the radar to accommodate the new team, as well as that the NHL's players are completely out of touch with what the team should be called (Crapweasels, obvi). In that realm, they also discuss some WHL and WHL alumni news, before jumping into the revelation that the NHL is full steam ahead on making money off of hockey-related gambling. Weekly One-Timers makes its triumphant return with topics like the Hurricanes' latest zany celebration, before another great new segment - Buy, Sell, or Hold - is introduced. There's no shortage of discussion on what this means to the city, the fans, and the league. John, Andy, and Darren also chat about the latest from around the NHL, including some surprising and unfortunate injury news, interesting post-camp roster moves, and what will happen now that Joe Thornton has decided to shave his beard. Other hard-hitting topics include Auston Matthews' photo shoot for GQ, Carolina wearing Hartford Whalers uniforms, and an analysis of the commercials currently being played on NHL Network. The third episode of Sound of Hockey is a fun one! With the ENORMOUS NEWS of the Seattle City Council officially voting 8-0 in favor of the KeyArena project, the guys are in a particularly chipper mood for this one. Helping that mood even more is the Philadelphia Flyers' revelation of their new mascot, Gritty, which has taken the hockey world by storm. Together, John, Andy, and Darren break down both topics in detail. Additionally, the guys "enjoy" a little pre-season hockey talk and discuss the prospects that they're each keeping their eyes on during this otherwise meaningless stage of the current campaign. Finally, each host gives his own opinion of which under-the-radar NHL team is most likely to make an unexpected run this season, which quickly deteriorates into unintentional season previewing for the Atlantic and Pacific Divisions. Subscribe. Enjoy. Review.

HOCKEY IS BACK! In this episode of Sound of Hockey, the guys talk about a bevy of topics. Locally, they talk about the latest on the Seattle Arena front, and Andy gives a little tutorial on the WHL and how it functions as a league. In more broad hockey talk, John, Darren, and Andy react to the earth shattering news of the past week, with Steve Yzerman stepping down in Tampa Bay (could he be tied to Seattle?), Erik Karlsson getting traded from the disaster in Ottawa, and Max Pacioretty moving to the Golden Knights. There's also an in-depth breakdown of Eugene Melnyk's very uncomfortable "interview" with Mark Borowiecki, and a heartfelt and hard-hitting discussion about goalie masks. Oh, and they manage to glide through the episode with some fantastic segues. Enjoy!

Not all of our episodes will be this heavily focused on NHL to Seattle news, but with so much happening this week surrounding a possible franchise coming to the Emerald City, we couldn't resist talking about it! The NHL's Bill Daly hinted that expansion may not come in 2020, but rather 2021, so the guys discussed this to determine if there should be any concern. John and Andy also attended Seattle's important City Council meeting, so in this episode, we have plenty of chatter about some of the nuggets that came from that meeting, as well as what they mean in the grand scheme of things. John also helps us understand the timeline of upcoming events as they pertain to an arena getting done. Together, John, Andy, and Darren share their excitement over the idea of actual NHL hockey and hockey season in general being just around the corner. There will be lots of interesting storylines to keep an eye on this season! SUBSCRIBE!
