On today's episode of Lone D's Gun Dog Chronicles, we chat with our good friend, Marie Madaras, from Silver Lion Kennels in NH. If you thought Bob's hunting trip out west was interesting, then saddle up for this one. Marie started her hunting season on the east coast in New Hampshire and then went north to chase grouse in Maine where she was mentoring students and running her dogs. Then she went west to the prairies with a group of women and their dogs and holy smokes, they got on some birds. If you haven't done it, it's always tough to load up and point your truck west in search of birds-- for tons of reasons. It's even more difficult to be successful with it; wellllllll Marie was. On today's show, Bob and Kevin sit down over a beer to discuss the 2024 hunting season. You might be thinking "it just started, how have you had two hunting trips already... who has time for this?" Bob somehow does and what a son of a gun. Bob, Nick, Huey and the Setter girls put some miles in looking for grouse up here in NY for a weekend. Bob talks through his weekend hunts, meeting some cool new people, marking new spots on the ol' onX map, training his Setter pup and a whole lot more. Then we dig into Bob's quick trip for a three day hunt in Canada for ducks and geese and a little bonus hike for upland birds, too. Bob and the group he went with saw so many birds each day it'd be hard to believe if there weren't pictures. This is an awesome episode, enjoy. This week, we have the pleasure of chatting with our good friend, Blake Haddock, from Feather Point Retrievers . We kick off the show chatting about Blake's background and how he grew up farming and working with horses and setters. He got his first lab as a little kid when he got real serious about duck hunting. As for most of us, once you get bit by the duck hunting bug, you move quickly onto the part where you need a dog... especially for dog people. We talk a lot about how Blake got working with pointing labs, how they are unique, how they are similar to Bob's dogs, what kind of training is involved and we answer any question you might have about pointing labs. We also get to hear about Blake's awesome hunting plans for the season and boy, it is gonna be great. Then we talk about some dove hunting and how Blaine manages his dove field, how he works his dogs for doves, some tips and tricks, working dogs in heat, eating birds, marking doves during the chaos of a hunt, etc. and then we talk deer. Blaine has a couple goodies on his property right now and we talked with him about his longbow and his highs and lows of last year and how he is working toward higher highs and less lows. For today's show, we have the pleasure of hanging out with Scott from Trulock Chokes . We kick off the show hearing about Scott's family business and how they got started in the outdoor industry. You'll quickly find that Scott is the real deal and knows a thing or two about hunting, fishing and especially, choke tubes. We get pretty deep with Scott in regards to how and why his chokes are unique, what he looks for in choke tubes, what he recommends for people to do when they get a new gun, etc. One of the most important things Scott suggests is to pattern the gun, choke and shell of choice at the rough distance you plan to shoot game. It sounds simple but ask yourself... have you done this recently? There's a ton of science that goes into making quality chokes for your guns and Trulock Chokes helps break it down on their youtube channel, which you can check out here . With thousands of variations of chokes, I'd bet there's something for you and your gun. It's worth looking into. Treat yourself. Today we had a great conversation with our friend, Karl Gunzer, from Purina . Before working for Purina, Karl worked with some of the most well-known dog trainers in the country and competed at the national level. Karl shares how he got into the training game, how he worked his way into Field Trials and some of the most memorable dogs he has worked with over the years. After the retriever game, Karl began working for Purina and also got into running cattle dogs. We talk a lot about the crossover between training retrievers and stock dogs and Karl shares a lot of insights. It's always great to chat with people who work dogs and have such an interesting perspective on training animals. Karl and the rest of the folks at Purina are working hard to support our industry, the events and the dogs and for that, I think we owe them some gratitude. This is a special episode because we get to chat with our good buddy, Luke Cour, from Cour's Retrievers . Luke is an absolute workhorse and knows a thing or two about training hunting dogs. Bob and Blaine kick off the show learning about how Luke got into hunting alongside bird dogs as a young guy and then got his first retriever. We also hear how he started working as a trainer (which is a question we get asked all the time... "well, how does someone get into this business?"). Then we get to hear about some of the special dogs Luke has worked with and issues he works through like poison birds and retired birds. We talk a lot about specific drills and how and when to use them (wagon wheels, 5 leg lining drills, etc.). We talk a lot about Hunt Tests and Field Trials and how he moved from one to the other and then onto the SRS. This is when we really dive in deep with the training work. We discuss using birds and plastic bumpers, when to use flyers, getting dogs comfortable with tricky things for the SRS and a lot more. This week's episode is extra special because we have our buddy, Luke Moore , from Gunner joining us and we also have Blaine live and in person . We kick off the show learning about Luke and how he got started chasing birds alongside a dog when he was just a boy. Like many people, Luke had the pleasure of growing up in a home where hunting with a dog was a central part of life. Currently, Luke has an older dog, Goose, who he grew up alongside and trained. Luke and Blaine trade a few hunting stories and talk about when their dogs had lightbulb moments and just "got it." We have a special episode today because we get to chat with our buddy, Marshall, from Treasure Island Outfitters . We met Marshall last year when our patreon crew went down to southern Missouri to shoot ducks and train dogs for three awesome days. Aside from seeing a crazy number of birds, telling stories with friends, working dogs and eating until we just couldn't anymore... we had a really good time hanging with Marshall and his guides. So when it was time to commit to another year of hunting with Treasure Island, we asked Marshall to join our show and hang out for a bit. In this show, you'll hear how Marshall and his business partners got into the hunting business, about their lodge, their hunting techniques, his dogs, etc. I promise, it won't take long to understand why we enjoyed hanging out and hunting with these guys. Today's show is a real treat because we had the pleasure of hanging out with some of the guys from First Lite, Michael Rietveld and Cody Dinsmoor. These two fellas were a ton of fun to have a beer with and talk dogs. First we dig into how these guys got into the outdoor space and how they got into hunting alongside dogs. We trade a few hunting stories about the most recent hunting season and really dig into their training, how their dogs are learning and progressing and what they're working toward. It's pretty cool to see how people get into a hobby and then take it to the next level. If you think you like hunting with your dog, wait to hear how much these guys get after it. Then we dig into a few stories from a recent bear hunt because why not? Overall, this was an awesome episode and I think you'll enjoy it as much as we did. Cheers! Today's episode is pretty special and we're happy to share our conversation with Shaundi Campbell from Browning . Shaundi is one of the coolest people you'll ever meet and spends her time chasing all sorts of animals. We kick off the show learning how Shaundi got into the hunting world and her latest expedition to Patagonia where she chased some giant red stags. Then we dig into her time raising and training hounds and how she got her first cat. We often say on the show how the coolest dog trainers are the ones who run hounds because it's such hard, blue collar work and the dogs are tough as nails. Then we move onto other hunting stories, her time in the uplands, Browning , her guns and where she is flying to next to fulfill a lifelong dream. A big thank you to Shaundi for joining our show and trading a few stories. It's always so great to spend time with someone who shares a passion for tough hunts and older guns that have their own stories via bumps and bruises. Be sure to follow Shaundi on social media, she is definitely one of the coolest people to keep an Instagram eye on. Cheers! Do you feel like you could use some direction with your dog training? This is a pretty special episode and you'll very quickly understand why. We are very pleased to speak with Brandon Surratt, a retired police officer who spent 18 years serving his community-- most of that as a K9 Handler. As you could imagine, Brandon learned a thing or two about training dogs and working them in high pressure situations so it was really interesting to hear him share about his dogs (Hyco & Mack), how they train, work, live with his family and (when necessary) get the job done. From wild drug busts to tracking & apprehending some unfriendly people, Brandon has some unbelievable stories that showcases not only his bravery, but his dogs'. We get lots of questions each week and one of the top ones is in regards to noisy dogs. My dog is noisy on the line, in the blind, on the dog stand and any other version of this you can imagine. As a result, we hooked up with Randy Bohn (from Rammin' Retrievers) to hear how he fixes this. Randy actually wrote a book called "It's not the dogs fault" and we'd recommend you check it out. We begin the show getting to know Randy and his experience working with dogs and how he got specialized in building good, quiet dogs. We chat through his training progression and his philosophy on increasing obedience to decrease noise. We finish the conversation discussing what it means to rush a dog and hearing Randy's thought on stickiness. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Tonight we have the pleasure of chatting with our good friend, Dr. Joe Spoo, or as most people know him, the Gundogdoc . If you haven't heard our previous shows with him, check those out first. Joe is an absolute wealth of knowledge and is also one of the nicest people you'll ever shake hands with. On this show, we catch up with Joe and hear about his hunting season, then hear about his kit for the field. This is pretty important and you'll hear a little story about Bob's latest venture into being a fake vet surgeon (the dog is ok!), but it's good to have tools on hand if you ever needed it. Since Joe is a vet with years and years of experience, he knows his way around a pair of forceps. He teaches us some "basic" doctoring for the field and shares info about his 16 chapter online course to keep your dog safe while afield. We end the show with some Q&A that came in with all sorts of good talking points like bow legged dogs, what is limbertail, when to be concerned about lumps or masses, flea and tick (and what he prefers!), joint health, diets and CBD. ***If you're interested in what Dr. Spoo has to say and would like to take his course then it's your lucky day . For today's show, Bob and Kevin hang out and catch up for the last show of Bob's southern trip. We check in on training and how all the dogs are doing, how he is working through issues and what his hunt tests have been like so far for 2024. We also get a sneak peek that Bob and Blaine were judging at the Boykin National. *We have a few spots left for our patreon duck hunt. Tonight we have the pleasure of chatting with our friend, Andy Wayment. Andy is a passionate hunter who has been chasing grouse for 25 years and sharing the woods with all sorts of dogs. Fortunately for us, Andy is also a great storyteller and has written a few books about his time spent behind his hunting dogs . We begin the show hearing about Andy and how he got into hunting, what makes a good hunting buddy and where he hunts in his books. Andy is extremely thorough and is able to recall specific details of a hunt like no other. Trust me, it's certainly worth checking out his books, whether or not you're a grouse hunter. Andy also does some more informal writing at his blog, which you can find here . Want more Lone Duck? Check out our patreon and come hang out with us. Cheers! Learn more about your ad choices. It was an absolute pleasure to sit down and talk dogs and hunting with Jim Ronquest. We begin the show learning about Jim, where he grew up and how he got into dogs. Then we chat about the two dogs he currently has and how they're doing with competing and hunting. As you can imagine, they're hunting machines. The next section is my favorite part of the show and Jim dives into story after story of hunting with past dogs in various places. Jim talks a lot about the determination and passion his dogs have for hunting and it's clear that he shares the same level of commitment. Honestly, it's admirable. We finish the show discussing good duck dogs and how they can also be high-level competition dogs, how age and experience play into dogs, making better duck dogs and when to take a young dog hunting. Thank you to Jim for joining the show and trading a few stories with us. Jim does Instagram Lives most Mondays and you should do yourself a favor and follow along . Cheers. Today's episode is extremely special because we get to chat with our friend, Pat Nolan, about training in drive. It's also special because you can head over to our youtube channel and WATCH this episode to see the videos Pat and Bob discuss during this episode. Aside from catching up with Pat, we chat about collar conditioning and his thoughts on "the goldilocks method." We also spend a lot of time discussing training in drive and how Pat uses this technique to engage dogs and essentially teach them faster and in a more thorough manner. We also discuss conditioned responses with reward markers, teaching directions to younger dogs, using tables to teach, what "force" means to Pat and finally, we discuss miscommunications in training and how to handle these situations. As always, it is a pleasure to hang out with Pat, hear stories about some of his dogs and the types of work they're doing and soak in some knowledge because boy, there's a lot to take notes on. We're excited to have our friend, Kali Parmley, back on the show today. As the editor of Gundog Magazine and host of our favorite tv show, Wild Upland , it's no surprise that Kali is an awesome storyteller and bad-to-the-bone hunter. We catch up with Kali and hear about her first time at SEWE (a Lone Duck favorite) and how her hunting season was this past year. Kali hunts all over the place with her dogs and is truly one of the most dedicated bird dog lovers we know. We also get to hear about how Kali's dog is learning, getting more bird contacts and really becoming a fine dog. As if she couldn't be any cooler, she has both a lab and a setter. Tonight we have the pleasure of welcoming back our buddy, Kyle Warren, from Paint River Setters . We had Kyle on the show a few episodes ago and felt like we didn't get enough of him so he is back and we talk for a while about anything and everything. We begin the show discussing grouse hunting, what's great about it, what trees to look for, types of covers and the difference between lake states and NY hunting. All of that is basically enough educational content for one episode but we keep talking through what birds eat and when, the type of gear Kyle has punished over the years, finding covers, using onX and other maps and then we rapid fire some fun questions at him. Take some notes, there's a lot to digest in this one. Kyle is a fantastic storyteller and the man knows more about grouse, and good grouse dogs, than anyone I've ever met. A big thank you to Kyle for hanging out with us and trading a few stories. If you're looking for some more information about Kyle, his dogs or grouse hunting... check him out at the link above. Today we have the pleasure of speaking with our buddy John Carpenter from Orvis Sandanona . For the past decade, John has been running driven hunts and tower shoots and he is the man behind the dogs for all of it. John is a passionate dog guy and his dogs are hard working, blue collar workers that retrieve like a hundred birds per hunt. They're absolutely fantastic to watch and always seem to know how to dig out a crippled bird, no matter where it'd hidden itself. We talk with John about his time working at Orvis, what it's like to be in charge of the hunts, what it's like training his dogs, hunting with good dogs vs great dogs and a whole lot more. John is a wealth of knowledge and it's great catching up with him. We'll have him back on the show again for sure. If you haven't heard of them, then check out their store and definitely check out their whistle... it's the only one we use at Lone Duck because it's that good. In this show, we hear about the guys and how they got into the dog world, how they develop their products and how Michael has had (what must seem like) 500 dogs. Today we had the pleasure of chatting with Kyle Warren from Paint River Setters . Kyle has been working with dogs since he was a kid and has been chasing birds for just as long. We begin the show learning how Kyle got into the business doing obedience from his family's barn and then went on to work with k9s and search and rescue. We then hear how he moved out west (lucky guy) and bought some land in the UP and now breeds and trains some of the prettiest Setters you've ever seen. We chat with Kyle about scent conditions for birds and, really, any kind of scent. It's interesting to hear how he compares training dogs to find people or items to how we work covers to hunt birds. Honestly, there isn't much of a difference but hey, have you ever thought of it that way? Then we move onto discussing genetics and how they play into big running dogs vs. slower tracking dogs and whether or not it's possible to reign in a big runner (like Kevin's dog, Covey). Later we talk with Kyle about his training style and how he takes a puppy and turns them into a hunting dog. Kyle is an absolute wealth of knowledge and we just scratched the surface on a lot of topics. A big thank you to Kyle for joining the show and we'll have him on the show again to chat more about chasing birds alongside some good lookin' Setters. Check out Kyle's instagram here . They dig into all sorts of topics from training drills to steadiness to the timing of corrections. We dig into the types of "pressure," where they agree and where they disagree on training, the timing and maturity of dogs and how some move faster than others and some move slower, etc... It's always good to have Blaine on the show because he seems to have a very thoughtful answer for just about any situation. Thanks for always following along. Today's show we chat with our buddy Brad Eldridge from Parish Waterfowl . Brad hunted with Bob a few weeks ago and aside from being a dedicated waterfowler, he is a great person who has a passion for duck calls, entrepreneurship, hard work, dogs and a whole bunch of things we also love. Man, it's great chatting with him. We learn about Brad's coffee shop and how he got into this game and how he first got into cuttin' calls. Brad dives into the history of duck calls and is extremely thorough. Then we dig into his calls, building them and how he hunts with his big dog, Parish. Finally, we end the show with some awesome parting advice from Brad. If you're interested in more stories, photos and Parish, then check him out on Instagram here . Cheers! Tonight we had the pleasure of speaking with our friends, Casey and Jessica Dowler, from FR Labs in South Dakota. Bob ran into Casey this past year at Master Nationals and had the chance to see him work dogs and he is extremely talented. We kick off the show learning a little about the background of both Casey and Jessica and how they got into the game, their first dog and what "discipline" means to them in regards to training dogs. Then we jump into a little conversation about Master Nationals and The Grand and hear some unique perspectives on the differences and what it takes for a dog to be successful. We also hear why Bob doesn't run many UKC events... we've had people ask and here ya go. We finish the show hearing about their hunting season and why South Dakota is such a special place for hunting with dogs. A big thank you to Casey and Jessica for joining us on the show and trading stories about dogs, hunting, judging and more. Maybe one of these days we could get together and share a duck blind. Tonight we are pleased to sit down and chat with our buddy, Carter Turner, from Mossy Pond Retrievers. Carter has been working with dogs since he was a kid chasing coon dogs through the woods. We begin the show learning about how he got into the dog world and all about coon hunting competitions. Then we hear how he picked up a job at Mossy Pond and did some apprentice work before being a full on dog trainer and running high level dogs all over the country. People often write in and ask how to be a dog trainer or how to start running dogs for people at these big events and well, here's how Carter did it. He started as a young man and worked hard and slowly but surely made progress. It's always cool to speak with good people like Carter who work tirelessly chasing goals. We then dig into his time in the SRS game and hear what he thinks makes a good SRS dog: marking, compliant, mature, etc.. Then we chat about his time at The Grand and then Master Nationals this year. We also hear what Carter and the fellas at Mossy Pond suggest people do when taking their dogs on their first hunt. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Tonight we have the pleasure of sitting down to chat with a repeat guest and good buddy, Pat Burns, from Elite Retrievers. We begin the show discussing the SRS and some of the unconventional stuff he saw and found interesting-- it's always great to hear his perspective. Then we dig into a very thorough conversation about handling. We talk all about line mechanics and what he calls "red zone handling" on blinds. Yes, you'll want to listen and relisten to that part of the show, it's super educational. Then we talk with Pat about off season training routines and two drills: the no no drill and the chinese drill. We finish up the show and hear about a new program he is offering starting in December, the Retriever Revolution . We also hear that Bob was featured in a youtube video, so check out Pat's channel here . As always, thank you to Pat for joining our show. Cheers! PS. Tonight, Bob and Kevin sit down to chat over a celebratory beer and cheers to a nice deer in the freezer. In episode 149, Bob shares the story of his first buck, Nubby (it's worth a listen haha) and today we hear about his relative, Nubby Jr. Truthfully, it'd only make sense that deer shot on Bob's property would be super goofy looking but hey, it's meat in the freezer and shooters shoot. Have you filled the freezer yet this year? Happy thanksgiving, everyone. Have a drink, hug your family, scratch your dogs ears and get outside. Cheers to you. Well, we haven't had a show in a while and that was not intentional. The Master Nationals take a giant amount of time, energy and focus and now we're back, baby. For this episode, we chat with Bob about his time in Thomasville, Georgia and we hear the highs and lows. We dig into each series, what was challenging, how dogs succeeded, which dogs struggled, why and how to train for it in the future. We hear a lot about Memphis and her attempt at the AKC Hall of Fame and we talk with Bob about how he feels now that she is retired. This episode is great and there's a lot of passion involved. Tonight we have the pleasure of sitting down and speaking with a good buddy, Michael Demmer, of Windy Hill Retrievers and I think you're going to enjoy this one. We begin the show learning about Michael's background growing up and his time in the military and how that transitioned into his time as a cowboy... and then how he transitioned into being a dog trainer and hunting guide down south. Yeah, what a wild series of events. We talk about Michael's advice for aspiring dog trainers and how he'd recommend people getting into the gun dog world and spoiler: he doesn't think you need to be in the army, then wrangle cattle and then train dogs... there's other ways, too. We also chat with Michael about balancing hunt test weekends, training dogs, clients, travel and being a good husband and dad. We then hear about Michael's summer competing with dogs at various events and how he is preparing his dogs for The Grand and Master National this fall. Oh, and on top of all that, he is also judging at the SRS Crown. Needless to say, Michael is an incredibly hard working, motivated and talented person who deeply cares about his dogs and his family. We need more people like Michael and if you listen to this episode, I think you'll agree. Cheers to you. Are you considering force fetch but don't feel confident in doing it yourself? Tonight we have the pleasure of sitting down IN PERSON with our good buddy and retriever training all-star, Kevin Cheff ( The Retriever Coach ). If you haven't heard our other shows with Kevin, then do yourself a massive favor and scroll back to our previous shows and enjoy them: Episodes 97, 118, 126, 158 and 159A. The last two shows were a two-part series where Kevin explained all sorts of unique drills to help train your dog and tonight's show is similar. We begin the show getting to know Kevin a little more and hear about getting into the retriever world and then we hear about some of the seminars he has been at this summer. Kevin has a very impressive history competing with dogs in the HRC and Field Trial game, so his seminars are super thorough and educational. Seriously, if you haven't been to one or joined his FETCH program , then you should look into something like that. Then we dig into a full Q&A with Kevin from our patreon friends and he and Bob tag team some ways to solve problems while training duck dogs at all levels. Here's some of the topics covered: long swims in AKC tests and Derbys, building confidence, cold water and pups, fetching objects, creating an effective training plan, teaching swim by and the common pitfalls to watch out for, Master tests, poison birds and a ton more. Tonight we have a special show with our well-bearded buddy from RGS, Nate Kennedy . Nate is an awesome storyteller and works hard to preserve habitat that we all like to hunt and explore. We begin the show chatting with Nate about his background in hunting and fishing and how he got hooked up with a cool job at RGS and we learn more about where dollars go when donated to RGS and AWS. Then we chat a little about bird habitat and dig into Nate's new hunting dog and how he has worked for the past year to prep him for this upcoming bird season. A special thank you to Nate for joining our show to get us all fired up about RGS, bird hunting, new dogs and all the things I'm drooling over as we get closer and closer to Fall. Tonight, Bob and Kevin sit down to chat with Addison Edmonds from Gunner Kennels . We had Addison on the podcast a ways back when we first started doing this show, so it's good to have him be a repeat guest. We all know Addison likes to invent new and exciting products to completely change the dog industry and well, we like sit around and BS, so why not combine the two? We start the show a little differently and play Shark Tank with Addison by pitching him a handful of ideas (some good, some awful) and we all get a good laugh. Then we hear about Addison's new dog, Chevy, and how he is quickly becoming one heck of a dog. Of course, we talk a little about older dogs and how impactful they are (Gunner and ol' Buck) and how it isn't easy to transition to new dogs. Addison makes a plan to get in a few solo hunts this year-- and you should, too. It's hard to really describe but there's something special about going out solo. You're carrying gear, tossing decoys, fixing the blind and settling in to call & shoot at ducks with no one around but your hunting buddy... that's pretty cool. After, we talk with Addison about something that is very special to us both, hunting traditions and bringing your family into the outdoors. If there's one big takeaway from this episode, it's his passion for his family, the outdoors and how important it is to combine the two. Oh, we also chat about Gunner's new bumpers that could have (maybe) broken Bob's Bush Hog. There's a reason why we partner with Gunner and their whole team: they're the real deal. Their products are the best on the market, they last forever and they're some of the most down-to-earth, good people you'll meet. Thanks for coming on our show and cheers to you. Tonight's show is great because we get to spend some time with our buddy, Mike Jones, from Primal Canine . Mike is one of the hardest working and most driven people you'll ever hear from on this show... or anywhere. Mike has been on the show before to chat about K9 Street League but tonight we talk more about some of the other projects Mike is working on. One of those projects happens to coach people on self defense with their dog... yup, pretty awesome. Mike is also working to donate money to the Glory House of Miami. This NPO helps support those who have been victims of human trafficking. It's a sickening topic to discuss but it is important to listen, learn and help. Mike plans to donate a fully trained working dog to help survivors at the house and is working to supply more dogs. Working dogs are pretty amazing, right? Today we have the pleasure of sitting down with Purina's Ray Voigt, one of the most insightful dog trainers you'll ever encounter. We've had Ray on the show in the past and the feedback was that he's a genius and a storyteller... so he is now a repeat guest. We had Ray at the kennel to record the show and hear about his summer roadtrip around the northeast and we review the National Amateur Field Trial Competition. We also discuss Master National and what Ray is doing to plan and prepare 3 months out from that level of competition. Then, we hear how Ray has conditioned dogs in the past with a roading system and get this... a kayak. We take a slight detour in conversation to hear about Ray's hunting trip to Argentina and how it's now on bucket list (and I bet yours, too). Okay, we jump back into dog training and talk about issues people have with their dogs and go into specific detail about how Ray would suggest fixing problems like loopy or crooked sits, bird boy blinds, line manners, watching birds and more. This is an extremely thorough conversation and Ray does a great job of explaining timing and what to watch for. Finally, we talk with Ray about some of the dogs he has trained in the past because they're often the "famous" dogs people refer to in their dog's pedigree. Seriously, go look through your dogs pedigree and you might find a dog Ray helped train. Want more Lone Duck? Join our Patreon and have Bob personally help work with you and your dog . For this episode, we sit down and talk with our buddy, Casey Everett , about small game hunting. Except, when Casey goes hunting, he brings hawks that he taught to trust and work alongside him and then they bring home cool dinners. Yes, he wins the coolest hobby award. We start the show learning about Casey and how he got into falconry as a kid and we learn what it takes for someone to legally trap and keep birds of prey. Then we hear about his first bird and how one time it tore up his hand pretty bad while hunting. Then we dig into the nuts and bolts of the training, which is super interesting. If you listen closely, there's some similarities between what he does and what we do. It reminded me of bringing home a high drive puppy with tons of natural instincts and you have to build trust and a bond and help nurture those instincts so the dog realizes "ohhhhh we're partners here." Casey is a super knowledgeable guy and is really fun to chat with. Enjoy the show and give him a follow and tell him we sent ya. Cheers! Want more Lone Duck? Today we had the pleasure of speaking with Pat Stuart from the Canine Paradigm Podcast . Aside from being a highly intelligent, hard working and extremely knowledgeable about training dogs... Pat is truly a great storyteller. His ability to break down complex dog training scenarios and then explain it in a way that makes sense to just about anyone is not something you find anywhere. That's why we called Pat from across the world to chat about dogs, training and hear a few stories from his past. We begin the show hearing about Pat's podcast (which I'd encourage you to check out), his military background and how he got into working dogs. He said being near dogs in the military was so interesting, he wanted to dig into that world more. Some of the conversations we had during the show discuss positive reinforcement training, negative reinforcement training and we talk about the "unforced force fetch." One of the cool parts about listening to Pat is hearing how calculated and intentional he is with everything. There is a how and why behind his training and he helps explain it all so you can replicate it with your dog. Thank you to Pat for coming on our show and hanging out for a bit. Today we sit down to hang out with our good friend, Marie, from Silver Lion Kennels . You may remember Marie, as she used to work at Lone Duck for a couple years and now she is crushing it with her own kennel over in Acworth, NH. Marie and her husband, Steve, recently got married and instead of going to sit at the beach or snorkel some island, they took the dogs for a midwest hunting trip.... I like to call it a huntymoon. We get to hear about how she took her GSP, Colt, to hunt alongside his father and grandfather and how cool it is to notice similarities between generations and bloodlines. Then they took their other dog, Sprocket, on their first real deal duck hunt and we got to hear about some memorable retrieves and moments from the trip. We end the show hearing more about her business and how she built her 15 run kennel on their property. It's interesting to chat with people about this sort of thing because it's always tough, exciting and fulfilling to create a business like this. This is a great show and we're excited to share it with you. Tonight, we hang out with Cliff Enzor from Uplander . Cliff is a Michigan guy who grew up hunting and always had good little Brittany bird dogs. We learn that as he got older, he fell more in love with hunting alongside his dogs than sitting in the deer woods. Cliff started the Uplander Lifestyle with his wife and they're making some of the coolest gear you'll find for anyone who likes chasing birds alongside their dog. Cliff has four bird dogs right now and we talk a lot about conditioning, how he wrangles four dogs, pigeons vs quail and Bob tells Cliff about The Mother of Dragons. We also chat about the typical stereotypes people hear about Brittanys and Cliff digs into his lifelong experience to help answer some of those questions. Cliff is a super passionate guy and certainly knows his stuff when it comes to hunting birds and doing so with dogs... this is one of those shows where you pause and take notes for when hunting season rolls around. Cheers! The most common question we get about dog training refers to force fetch so we created a video series using all sorts of dogs at various stages to help show you the how, when and why behind force fetch. MmmmMMmmmm. Tonight, Bob and Kevin sit down and chat with our buddy, Hunter, over at Kent Cartridge . I'm sure you've heard us talk about how great it feels to sling a few rounds of bizzzmuth down range and how effective it can be when duck hunting but did you know the boys at Kent have a new shot out there? Oh yea. Hunter tells us all about their new product Fasteel+ and how it's not only cheaper than bismuth but packs more of a punch. We also have a very real conversation about how covid changed the industry and supply chain and how Kent Cartridge is working to adapt. Oh, we also hear about dogs eating doves and Bob gives Hunter some advice which can be applicable to many, many people out there. Check out Kent Cartridge, find some of their gear and get on the birds this fall. Want more 1:1 training with your hunting dog? Check out our patreon where you can work closely with Bob. Tonight we have the pleasure of sitting with and speaking with our good buddy and talented dog trainer, Blaine Tarnecki, from Hudson River Retrievers down in Georgia. You've heard Blaine on our show a few times now and he is always a wealth of knowledge, whether it's training young dogs, obedience, meticulous handling drills or catching stripers... this guy does it all. On this episode, he and Bob tag team some thorough questions from our patreon friends ( you can become one and possibly win a hunt here ) and holy cow does it get interesting. Listen to the whole show to get each little snippet of tips and tricks from both Bob and Blaine. A big thank you to Blaine for joining the show and for putting up with Bob, per usual. Cheers to you and enjoy the episode! BTW... if you leave a great review on our podcast, we'll be reading some next week. Thank you! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Welcome to Lone Duck's GDIY Chronicles! Today we have a different kind of show so hang with me... I was fortunate to have a conversation with Nick Adair and Jeremy Moore (from DogBone ) on Nick's podcast, Gun Dog It Yourself and we meticulously dug into a whole lot on training hunting dogs. While this show was recorded for Nick's podcast, we thought it was extremely honest and educational, so we asked Nick if we could share and post it on our feed, too. We begin by defining "force fetch" and "collar conditioning" and the different ways to teach a dog. There's a lot in the conversation, so I won't detail each portion of the show but the goal was to debate the various ways to train a dog and further clarify each step in the process. We certainly go back and forth a little and we agree and disagree and that's ok. There's more than one way to train a dog and Jeremy has great dogs doing things his way. We have great dogs that are trained the lone duck way. Thank you to Jeremy and Nick for having an open conversation. Are you looking for more Lone Duck content, 1:1 conversations or can we help remotely train your dog? Check out our patreon here and maybeeee you'll win a spot on our hunting trip this fall. Tonight we have the pleasure of sitting down to speak with one of the most respected dog trainers in our country, Pat Nolan . We begin the show chatting with Pat and learning about how he got into the dog world and how a unique hobby caused a dog training epiphany for him. We could have spent hours talking with Pat about how this happened and how it evolved over the years to become a successful philosophy... so we'll have him back on the show. In talking with Pat, we discuss "training in drive" and how to shape a dog's behaviors by using their own internal motivation to complete the task at hand. Stay with me here, it's a lot to process and digest but it's brilliant. We then ask Pat how he knows when his dog is ready for the next step in the training process (this is super interesting) and we hear about his online training course, Retrieving from the pup up . Bob and the Lone Duck crew are working through this training course and it's worth the time and energy. One of the best parts of this conversation with Pat was hearing all of his little gems of knowledge formed by years of experience over many, many dogs. If you're like me, you'll find yourself feverishly scribbling notes and rewinding this to hear and digest his insights over and over. Of course, we had to ask Pat about his work with the military dogs and how that came to be and holy cow, what a story. We finish the conversation with Pat by discussing mistakes and disobedience when training dogs and how to handle each... think about that for a second because it's very intricate and important. Thank you to Pat for sitting down with us and sharing a few stories and training tips. We'd highly recommend you check out his website if you're interested to learn more. Want more Lone D? It's always a good time when you're talking about puppies and well, tonight was a good time. We had the pleasure of speaking with Megan Comfort from Torg's Labs about every single step in the puppy process. First, we learn about Megan and how she got into this world and shocker, it's a wild and emotional rodeo. Everyone thinks working with puppies is all rainbows and sprinkles but holy cow is it time consuming, stressful and cute all at once. We talk with Megan about some of her memorable dogs and why she would pair them with others, what her goals are for breeding labs, why and how they breed them in an ethical manner and we even mention our good buddy, Dr. Spoo! We also dig into what kinds of things can happen to the momma dog and the puppies during birth. Yes, we dig into all sorts of fun, plus we talk about the first 72 hours of a pup's life and how fragile they are. We talk again about early neurological stimulation and how impactful it can be for a dog, alongside proper socialization. If you have ever had questions or concerns about puppies or you ever thought maybe you'd consider raising a litter then this show is for you. You'll learn all the ins and outs and if you're interested in learning more, you should check out what Megan is doing with Torg's Labs . Want more Lone D? For today's show, we're lucky to have Nick Adair (from the Gun Dog It Yourself podcast ) in the house and boy, do we have a good time talkin' dogs. Nick is an absolute dog man and anytime you can trade stories with someone like that, it's just easy, natural and the best time ever. We kick off the show with Nick asking about Bob's southern trip (Nick runs our show better than we run our show) and how he schedules training for the year. Then we dig into Nick's passion for working dogs. Nick spent some time chasing coons behind a dog and we hear about how he got into obsessively learning about, and working alongside, dogs. Then we hop into stories about his three hunting dogs, how he came by each one and how each unique dog is special. It's cool to hear how Nick has special hunts with each dog but if you take a step back and look at why each moment was memorable, it boils down to the same thing: working hard alongside your dog YOU coached is an unreal experience, every time. This week we're happy to sit down and hang out with our good friend, Nick Larson from the Birdshot Podcast . We always enjoy spending time with Nick and picking his brain about all things grousey but we also had the opportunity to learn more about the Upland Gun Company and all the cool stuff they're doing. If you're looking for a piece of art to carry around the woods and pass down through the family, then you should absolutely check them out and consider building your own custom gun. Yes, you read that correctly... build your own custom gun. We talk with Nick and learn about all sorts of stuff like english grips, what he looks for in a gun, Nick's advice for people getting fitted for a gun , and a ton more. Then we jump into a good discussion catching up on Nick's dogs and we learn how he coached his younger dog, Rose. She has had a couple seasons under her belt and is really becoming a fantastic grouse dog, so it's nice to learn more about ol' Rose. Bob and Nick talk through how people should walk up on a point and coach your dog to stay steady so you can have the best chance of pinning a grouse and creating a shot opportunity. If you've ever grouse hunted before, you know that it's easier said than done. Then we chat about hunting several guys and several dogs in the woods. A lot of people don't think about how tricky that can be but really, it's an art form. It's always good to hang out with Nick and talk dogs, guns and birds. If you somehow live under a rock and haven't spent time enjoying his podcast then check it out... you won't be disappointed. Cheers to you. Are you interested in hunting with the Lone Duck Crew? Tonight was awesome. We had the pleasure of sitting down and talking dogs and hunting with Kali Parmley of Gun Dog Magazine. We learned how she got into the outdoor world, made her way to be the Editor in Chief at Gun Dog Mag and is now launching a new show called Wild Upland . The show airs April of 2023 and showcases all the things we love: chasing birds alongside good dogs, the adventures of a hunt and a well-earned beer at a cool local spot you wouldn't find on a map. Kali is a great storyteller and you can feel her passion for wild places and wild game as she shares stories from past trips all over the country. Personally, I can't wait to watch and rewatch her show because it'll be a goodie. Be sure to check out the great articles they're pumping out at Gun Dog Mag ! For tonight's podcast, we had the pleasure of chatting with Jake Smith, the man behind The Pointing Dog Journal, The Retriever Journal and Just Labs Magazine. We begin the show learning about Jake's background, his books and how he got into the outdoor world. We chat a little about some of our favorite stories and how they've shaped our experiences in the outdoors. Is anyone else a big fan of Gordon MacQuarrie... I know I am. Then Jake talks a little about how other people can get into the writing world and we dig into some of the great moments we've shared hunting alongside dogs. We learn about Jake's dogs and find that he is also a Setter Man-- he has great taste in dogs and guns. It was fantastic meeting Jake, learning about his time in the outdoors and sharing stories with each other. It's funny how easy it is to connect with someone over a few stories about old guns and bird hunts. If you're interested in learning more about Jake, then check out his two books here and here . Tonight we sit down with Lars Jacob, a wingshooting coach, meticulous gunfitter and the type of guy who knows his way around the grouse woods. We begin tonight's show hearing about Lars' work coaching people to shoot effectively on the wing ( check out his website here ) and then dig into the types of habitat grouse and woodcock call home. Then we hear about how the shooting sports have evolved over time and today's shooter is much different than the past. We talk with Lars about the differences between shooting clays and real birds and finally we talk guns with Lars. It's always fun to speak with people who are experts in their field but it's rare you can speak with someone like Lars who I'd consider an expert in wingshooting, shotgun history, grouse and woodcock, bird hunting and more. Honestly, it was a treat to sit down and chat with Lars and we're grateful for his time on the show. If you're interested, I'd highly encourage you to check out his website and learn more. Tonight's episode is a bit different than our usual retriever training and hunting stories and I know you're going to enjoy the conversation as much as we did. It finally happened. After what seemed like forever, we finally got the chance to record an episode with our buddy, Rob Kugler . Rob is an extremely special guy with a unique story to tell about his life, his family, his service and his dog. If I had to describe Rob, I'd begin with his character and reference his passion, determination, resiliency and selflessness. He is a fantastic storyteller and the next two hours will have you on the edge of your seat, laughing and pretending not to cry. Rob truly embodies "the unspoken bond" and it's one of the many reasons we appreciate him. Cheers to you, Rob. Alright, folks! Kevin Cheff The Retriever Coach is back for the second part of this mini series and if you thought part one was thorough, then you haven't seen anything yet. In this episode, Bob and Kevin Cheff discuss the fundamentals for creating a phenomenal dog and the drills used to get them there.... and stay there (that part is important). Here's a few topics they review: teaching multiple marks, wide open marks, developing confidence with memory, Kevin breaks down a training schedule for a Master level dog, we run through check down birds, the ABC Drill, live flyers and then we dig into water. Holy cow, do we dig into water. We review simple water marks (<100 yards) and then angle exit drills, Kevin explains the components of all water marks, cheating singles and teaching water blinds. Finally, review the four parts to one good "sit." Then we chat with Kevin and ask him some questions that our patreon friends had for him and we share books that you should read about dog training. We also have a pretty good chat about buying Started Dogs and what to look for and how to make that transition from the kennel to your house smooth. We owe Kevin a big thank you for joining our show and spending time teaching and breaking down concepts... I suppose that's why he's The Retriever Coach. If you're interested in his work, then check out his program FETCH . PS. Did you see we launched new shirts ? Our buddy, Mike Hosier , did the artwork for this shirt and we're pumped share it with you all. Mike is doing a Kickstarter for his awesome photo journal with his dogs. Tonight we have one of our favorite guests back on the show, Kevin Cheff, the Retriever Coach . We catch up with Kevin and learn about his new online coaching platform he calls Fetch... you should check it out if you haven't yet . The main topic of tonight's conversation is super timely. We discuss important drills and tasks to do right now before your dog gets back into advanced training and the hunt test season rolls around. One of the themes I noticed in the conversation with Kevin was simplification and establishing high standards with your dog training. Kevin does an extremely thorough job of explaining how he does this with drills and how to correct the dog properly during the drills. We talk about a whole bunch of topics like: holding blind manners, wagon wheel, refining targeting, having discipline with your dog, reviewing swim by to keep your dog crispy and stalling at the right time, marking drills, retired guns and walking singles. Oh, just all those topics? Yes, and with meticulous detail. In fact, we dig into these drills so much that we decided to make this a two part series! I'll leave you with a great quote from Kevin during this episode, "good reps enforce good behavior." It seems simple, right... but ask yourself if you consistently do that with your dog or just doing lots of reps. Welcome, welcome. Oohhhhh baby. Today's podcast is with Kevin and Bob where we chat about a whole bunch of things so settle in for a goodie. First we chat about the D-O Double G, Miss Prairie Dog and how her hunting season has been. As some of you know, we have been spending more time with her in the field as Memphis is getting a little older (more to come on that), and she is doing a fine job. We also hear about Bob's sabbatical to Costa Rica. Is that Kelly Slater? Nope, just Uncle Bob The Shredder out there riding waves, saving lives and eating fish like locals. (Insert hang ten emoji) Finally, we get into some of the plans and goals for Lone Duck Kennels in 2023... you won't wanna miss them. Please listen until the end if you need a motivational speech from Bob. Cheers to you. If you're reading this far down, then you should go read through the force fetch course to see how Bob coaches dogs... you'll be glad you did. With the course, you get Bob's personal help so you can feel more than confident in force fetching your dog. If you're not at the force fetch stage, that's ok. Today's episode is devoted to properly collar conditioning your dog. Using an e collar is controversial and some trainers use them, some trainers do not, some people think their dog is "too soft" for them and some dogs (most dogs when used properly) jump up and down in excitement when the collar comes out. Because of this confusion, we decided to create the most in depth episode to teach anyone and everyone to be confident and educated enough to collar condition their own dog. In this show, we call several professionals to hear their specific routine for collar conditioning protection dogs, pet dogs and hunting dogs. We hear from Blaine Tarnecki from Hudson River Retrievers and The Brown Dog Academy , Adam Campbell from Campbell's Hillside Kennels and the Doghouse Podcast, Oscar Mora from Elevated Canine and then Bob finishes the show by explaining his process. Listen to this show and if you have questions, please reach out to anyone who chimed in on this episode (links to contact them are above ^^) If you'd like to properly force fetch your dog or want more Lone Duck action, then check out our patreon here and you can meet us for some beers and talkin' dogs. Today we have the pleasure of speaking with a real beagle man, Bob Ford. Aside from having a great name, he's also a fellow dog man who loves being out in the woods while carrying a gun and following his dogs.... I know I can relate. If you're interested in his work, then you should check out his website here . We have a great conversation and dig into Bob's years and years of experience running trials and raising fantastic rabbit dogs. We're kicking off the new year with one of the coolest episodes we've done on our show. We had the pleasure of sitting down to speak with Carlos Ramirez to hear his story and how he's working in the K9 world. We begin learning about Carlos' time playing sports, traveling and how he started going to school for training dogs. Let's just say, he certainly didn't have an easy road to becoming the trainer that he is today... it took time, patience and grit. Then we chat about genetics and the major role that it plays in both the gundog world and the protection world. It's interesting to think about the differences between two working breeds but it's astounding to think about the similarities and how much crossover there is in training. We go on to hear about Carlos' time working alongside Mike Ritland and his time at the Warrior Dog Foundation . If you're like me and you think it's fascinating to think about what special forces dogs can do... just wait to hear how he had to gain their trust and work with dogs of that caliber. After, we chat about how Carlos is working with the law enforcement in his area and how his work has expanded to become national. It's interesting to hear Carlos speak about the different tiers of dogs and "what makes a unicorn" in his industry. One of the great parts of speaking with Carlos is how articulate he is and how he can break down information so anyone can understand high level dog training. We owe Carlos a 'thank you' for his time and how he is influencing the K9 world. If you're interested in learning more about CRK9 or you're in the Ocala FL area, check out his website here . Tonight, we chatted with our good buddy, Dr. Joe Spoo ( The Gun Dog Doc ... check him out!), about all things sporting dogs. First, we talk about chasing upland birds and hear about Joe's lab (that he said he'd never own... and he explains why). Then we dig into a couple of Joe's late dogs. We chat a little about why chukar are great for training but overall, they're just the worst. Then we hear about Joe's newer dog, a Cocker Spaniel and how she's just the coolest little dog. Joe's spent some time at Spaniel trials and highly recommends anyone in the dog world check them out. We continue chatting with Joe and talk about sporting dogs and how they're athletes and how you can adjust your hunting to match (and support) each stage in the dog's life. Joe has years and years of experience as a Vet and has interesting thoughts on keeping your dog healthy and in the field longer. We talk about tick-borne diseases and common injuries and his thoughts on them. Joe also gives Bob some interesting thoughts on Memphis and her struggles from her tick-borne disease. One of the quotes from Joe that really struck me was when he said "age is not a disease" and he's right. We need to take care of our dogs so they not only live a long life but can live one with as much time in the field as possible. Most people we speak with talk about building confidence in their dogs, searching for good genetics to create certain desires in a dog, creating a relationship, etc..... and we're talking about gundogs. Well, tonight we're talking about that but with police dogs and dogs that "want to eat you." It's always super interesting to chat with people from the bite dog world because the stakes are so much higher and there's a ton of parallels from their world to ours. We also talk with Courtney about being a decoy and what it's like to have dogs run you down and how to coach dogs through that process. We talk about making good dogs, what "good dogs" means to each of us, what makes good trainers and most importantly, we hear about his dog, Pig. Overall, this was a really cool show and we're grateful that Courtney wanted to come hang with us for a bit. If you're interested in what his world is like, check him out on instagram here. I'd be shocked if you haven't heard Freddy King's name or seen any of his work on TV... it's everywhere and he is the man. Freddy has helped thousands of gun dogs by coaching their owners via hundreds of how-to videos and tonight, he helps the Lone Duck Community. Tonight, we sit down with Freddy King and we talk about everything imaginable. We learn how Freddy got into dogs and we have the "dogs of a lifetime" chat. You know, the one where some people swear you only get one good dog in your life and others have that dog a few times. Then we talk about The Retriever Trainer and how Freddy can help people ( check it out here ). We talk about how he adds realism to his training so even the dogs who don't retrieve thousands of ducks per year can still gain experiences. We end the show as Freddy shares his most memorable retrieve, a common question we like to ask people. Well, Freddy sure has an uncommon answer. Well, tonight we tried something new. We have a lot of people ask about our patreon happy hours and what they are and why we do them, etc. so we thought we'd share one. This is a one time deal because they're exclusive to our community but they all said it'd be fun to hop on a podcast, so here we are. We get a lot of awesome dog training questions and hear how other people's dogs are doing as we all gear up for hunting season. Settle in, listen up and let us know what you think. Tonight we have a very special podcast for a few reasons. First, Bob and Blaine host the show together, which is something we haven't done before but also, we had the extreme pleasure of chatting with one of the greatest dog trainers around, Pat Burns of Elite Retrievers . Pat has 3+ decades of training and competing at the highest levels possible. Think about that for a second...because it's wild. He is one of the most knowledgeable trainers currently in the game and boy, do we dig into some awesome training discussions. Bob, Blaine and Pat chat about a variety of training topics that you could apply to your dog (regardless of the level they're currently at). They begin discussing the importance of building trust and challenging dogs, especially with high level dogs. Pat emphasized that each dog should have a strong foundation and he encourages people treat it like an investment in the dog's lifetime, so don't rush the small steps. He also pointed out that most people fail because of the "simple" things at a test like sitting and other obedience things. Then we dig into some topics Pat is meticulous with like whistle sits. We often get questions about how we train for this and Pat explains his process, which begins way before you actually teach a dog to sit on a whistle. Finally, we end the show with some parting advice from Pat. Overall, this show was extremely educational and interesting. Be patient and invest in your dog, it'll be worth it. If you enjoyed listening to Pat, then check him out at Elite Retrievers and catch one of his seminars... you won't be disappointed. Cheers! It's an extra special show because we have Blaine Tarnecki from Hudson River Retrievers at Lone Duck Kennels. Blaine, his wife and their swarm of little brown dogs are staying in NY for a couple weeks to get out of the hot, southern sun. After dining on some finely smoked fish from a recent trip that Blaine took out west, we sit down over a drink to chat about gun dog training, fishing for Stripers and we answer some really detailed training questions. Overall, we had a pretty awesome time and I think you'll enjoy. *Lone Duck's Gun Dog Chronicles is part of the Waypoint Outdoor Podcast Network. Learn more about your ad choices. Tonight was extremely special for the Lone Duck crew because we not only got to hang out with our patreon friends and talk dogs and hunting but then we jumped on a very special call to meet a new friend. Tonight, we (at least from our side) became best friends with the creator of Duck Camp Dinners on the MeatEater youtube channel and wildly talented chef and Bronco man, Jean-Paul. We had one of the best conversations with him and heard about his show and what he's excited to share in their second season (which airs 08/12/2022). What we enjoy about his show is how relatable and authentic it is to the deer camp, ice fishing and duck camps I've been to. It's impressive how they nail it but also so simple because that's really how it is when you hang at a duck camp with your buddies... they just turned their good times into a show we all love and appreciate. I hope you listen and enjoy our episode with Jean-Paul. He's extremely passionate, driven and thoughtful and hey, the guy can shoot ducks and cook 'em like a champ... isn't that just the ideal buddy to sit around and BS with? Well, that's what we did. We got to hear about his time growing up hunting, his first dog, his time learning to cook, what makes cajun food, how much bob enjoys boudin, his life in NYC and a ton more. Tonight, Bob and Kevin sit down to chat about a whole bunch of topics but first we review the latest field trial bird by bird and dog by dog. We dig into what went well and what went wrong and how to train for these situations. We also get into Bob's new strategy for field trials. Then we dig into a few good questions from patreon people about the beginnings of Lone Duck and starting a kennel and what it actually took to get to today. Tonight, we had the pleasure of hanging out with our good buddy, Jeff Coats, from Pitboss Waterfowl . Jeff probably doesn't need an introduction because this is his hat trick episode on the podcast, he is a legend on social media, tv and anytime someone says the words "seaduck hunting." All that said, did you know Jeff is an absolute dog man with lots of experience training and running dogs in hunt tests? Well, Jeff took a little time off but he is back in the game... this time alongside his awesome wife, Karen. One of the reasons we enjoy spending time with Jeff is because he is such a great storyteller and tonight, we hear some goodies. He and Bob chat about how Jeff got into hunt tests in 2001 and we hear about some of his dogs from way back. Then we dig into his new dogs, Rye and Mac, and how they're doing as Jeff and Karen get back into competition. Finally, we hear a few tips and tricks about passing (and failing) Junior dogs at various hunt tests. Next, we hear about Jeff's passions and how he keep waterfowling on his mind 365 days a year: ducks, dogs & carving decoys. Jeff generously gives us an intro to carving duck decoys and talks about the types of wood, where to get it, what to do with it, which materials he would suggest you buy, you name it and we cover it. Truthfully, we were taking notes and you probably should, too. Overall, it's a pleasure chatting with Jeff and Karen as they are fantastic people who truly love and support ducks, dogs, decoys and the sport we all appreciate. Jeff and Karen: cheers to you. Tonight's show is jam packed with all sorts of training advice for building one heck of a dog. We chat with our buddy Ray Voigt from Purina about his time as a dog man. Ray worked alongside & learned from some of the greatest trainers of our generation (you'll hear who in the show). We hear how Ray gives corrections, how he handles dogs who do not give effort and what he considers "effort." We talk in depth about increasing effort on down the shore blinds and other difficult scenarios. We hear a very detailed explanation of Ray's methods for teaching hold and transitioning throughout force fetch and walking fetch and we learn how to oversimplify training for dogs. Many people ask us about 3 handed casting and well, we chat about that, too. One of my favorite quotes from this show was when Ray said to coach dogs by making the right thing to do, easy , and making the wrong thing to do, hard. We have such a highly detailed conversation about such intense training that we almost run out of time to chat about Purina. We dig into Ray's work with herding dogs and Spaniels and 3 products from Purina that you may not know about... Tonight we kick back with our good buddy from Foundation Retrievers, Oliver. He made the long trip up north to do some training with the Lone Duck crew and it's only fair that we bother him on a podcast. We doe some shot for shot questions with Oliver about hunt tests, how to get dogs to pass, his thoughts on training dogs during the heat and a ton more. Bob and Kevin also share a few old stories of past hunting trips and how Bob is grumpy at 5am when Kevin is trying to toss decoys out of the boat. Tonight we had the pleasure of sitting down to hang out with MeatEater's Duck Man, Sean Weaver. If you haven't seen his show on youtube, Duck Lore, then you're missing out and need to rethink life a little. On the show, we hear about Sean's time growing up as a hunter, how he got involved in ducks, memorable retrieves, awesome hunts he has been on, and more. We also hear about his dog, Kace, and how her training is going, where she is from and the wholeeee deal. We also dig into some Duck Lore action and Sean's plans for the show and why he made it the way that it is (which we respect the heck out of). Finally, we ask Sean for his thoughts on the bird flu and how that may influence duck numbers, which snowballs into a super interesting conversation about the prairie pothole region, tamies and wild ducks and a lot, lot more. Thank you to Sean for joining us on the show and for working hard to positively influence the duck hunting community. If you're reading this, then you'd be a fan of his show... check it out here . Tonight, we announce some news that we've been waiting ~7 years to share. Pretty excited, pretty grateful and prettyyyyy pumped. After we chat through that and the plans moving forward, we move to a recap of Bob's field trial with a few Lone Duck dogs. It was a super difficult layout and tons of dogs struggled to stay on course. Bob reviews how it went, what he learned and how you and he can do better next time based off this experience. Oh, and reminder: we have an in person seminar with our friends at Standing Stone Kennel on 06/25/2022. Tonight we had a great conversation with our good buddy, Dakota Mealer... you may remember him from a past episode. Dakota is a fantastic trainer who currently has our little girl, Jolene, to see what he can do with her. We get to hear a little JoJo update as she has been working through force fetch, swim by, cold blinds, pattern blinds and should be coming up on decheating in the near future. We also dig into a few tricks for getting a young dog into the water properly, using pigeons and ducks and what ideal dogs look like for Dakota when they first come to him. We chat about how and when to apply pressure and how to create compulsion with your dog. This is a super interesting conversation and it's one that many people (myself included) find confusing. Pay attention to how Dakota explains all this... Lone Duck's Gun Dog Chronicles is part of the Waypoint Outdoor Podcast Crew. Follow 'em and you'll be glad you did. Learn more about your ad choices. Do you run any sort of test with your dog? If yes, then listen up. On today's show, Bob chats with our good buddy, Clark Kennington. As a repeat guest on the show, you might be familiar with how talented and articulate Clark is and on this episode he unleashes about 500 pro tips on how to be a better handler. We dig into the HRC Grand and what it takes to play that game, both as a handler and dog..... and pass it. Here's a couple items we address on the show: Why do you slow down at the line. Why monitor wind direction. How does Clark take detailed notes for each dog and when. When to move around at the line (if possible) to set the dog up for success. Do we recall dogs when training on marks... why? when? Thank you to Clark for coming on and hangin' out. Tonight's show is a special one. We reconnect with our good friend and someone we look up to for a whole bunch of reasons, Ira McCauley. When we first started this show, Ira was our first guest and if you haven't heard the show, check it out (episode 2) because you'll wet yourself laughing. For this show, we learn about Ira's podcast (the grind don't stop) and we hear the latest with Habitat Flats. Tis the season so we chat about turkeys and how Ira has killed 100+ turkeys in his career. We hear about his gun and the wild story it has and where its final resting place is. Ira is extremely knowledgeable about ducks and turkeys and business and building habitats for ducks and cooking wild game and he is also a vet among many other things. If you read that sentence outloud, you'd need to stop and take a breath because his woodsmanship resume is so long. The best part though? He's willing to share and trade stories. Cheers to you, Ira. Today, we chat with our buddy, Oscar Mora, from Elevated Canine Academy. Oscar is a fantastic dog trainer out on the west coast and as you'll learn, he knows a thing or two about training athletic dogs with high drive. One of the questions we often receive is regarding "a high drive dog and how to manage it." With the stakes being quite high for dogs in protection competitions, we chat a lot about drive capping and how to work WITH a dog, their energy, drive, motivation, etc., rather than learning how to "manage" it. We often say it's important to train the dog in front of you and it's great to hear Oscar (who has tons of experience with all sorts of dogs) echo these opinions. We also learn a little about Oscar's time in the bite suit and in front of the movie camera. Overall, he's a super cool dude who is great at teaching dogs and people. It is always a good time when we can kick back with our buddy, Barton Ramsey, from Southern Oak Kennels. He's been on our show before and we always have a great discussion about training, family, dogs, breeding and life. Barton is one of those people you spend time with and later you think man, I wish we hung out more. Tonight's conversation was absolutely incredible and you won't want to miss it. We talk about a million topics like: what to look for when breeding dogs, Barton's new dog, moose and his background and how cool he is. We chat about when our buddy, Adam Campbell, went out for a training day with the SOK crew, so we hear about the training day and their set up. Then, we dig into a good conversation about training blind retrieves and fueling the dog rather than stifling their confidence, place training like a pro & how Barton corrects a dog who is creeping. Tonight, we have a fantastic conversation with Kevin Cheff, The Retriever Coach, about the nuances of collar pressure and a whole lot more. How to use an e collar with integrity, teaching dogs to properly understand collar pressure, collar conditioning to sit vs here, why Bob uses pressure to "kennel" and how to choose the right collar for your dog. Kevin says he prefers collars that are simple to operate and highly reliable.... we agree 100%. We also ask Kevin a few questions directly from our friends on Patreon ( patreon.com/loneduckoutfitters/ ) and we chat about direct vs indirect pressure and give a few simple examples so everyone is on the same page. After, we dig into some Q&A we did with people from Patreon and they pick Bob's brain about denials, t pattern distances and we chat a lot about training dogs rather than "training dogs to pass a test." Bob asks KD a ton of cool questions about the training involved, the types of situations people have to prepare their dog for, how people in the bite suits prepare, etc. and a ton more. A few weeks back, a true dog man (KD Mathews) came to hang out and share some stories. KD lives down in sunny Florida and has been in the dog training business for the past 30 years and the reason is because he asks questions. Then he asks more. He asks the owners questions and in turn, teaches the owners about their dogs before really even teaching the dogs. Then ya know, he teaches the dogs, too. We dig into some leadership with dogs & people and surprise: coaching people and coaching dogs can be eerily similar. KD provides a phenomenal analogy that really hits home, especially since we all refer to ol' Lone D as Uncle Bob. Then we finish up chatting about bite work with dogs, the importance of a "denial" and how dogs never forget things, we just try to bury those memories deep, deep down below tons of positive reps. If you enjoyed the show as much as we did, hit up KD and learn more at socraticcanine.com ... you'll be pleased you did. Cheers, brotherrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Learn more about your ad choices. Today's show was certainly a special one. We had the pleasure of speaking with 1st Lt. Amber English... but you might know her more as the bad to the bone wingshooter with nerves of steel who earned the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Amber has been competing for years and is currently shooting on the AMU team in the United States Army, so she has the coolest job ever. We learn about her time in Tokyo, the food she has eaten while traveling, her hunting plans for the fall and a ton more. Amber also shares some advice she's heard from coaches and she even offers some tips to help us become better shooters...we'll see how it goes. We had a good hanging out with Clark Kennington. He is truly one of the greats. We chatted through the hunt test he ran up here in NY and ran through the good and bad from it. We then dig into some of his philosophy for training dogs and how he's been successful over the years in all sorts of tests. *Also, Shorty's Pub n Grub should be a podcast sponsor.... Welcome welcome. Tonight's show was with our buddy, Doug, from Soggy Dog Gear. He's an awesome guy who enjoys training dogs and telling tales. Doug lives out in Michigan and that lucky dog happens to live in some prime bird hunting area (I'm not jealous or anything, it's fine). Anyway, we have a great time talking about how Doug got started working with dogs, new products from his dog supply company, a contest Doug is putting together for amateur trainers, Dogtra products he likes and possibly my favorite part of the conversation... we talk about fire breathing, pumped up, high drive dogs and how to handle them. Doug happens to own a fire breather and he and Bob talk a lot about obedience, ways to work with those kinds of dogs, lessons learned from k9 handlers, etc. We'll have to have Doug back on the show sometime because 1. he's the man and 2. we had a great conversation and I want to hear more about some grouse action. Our good buddy Adam Campbell is back on our show to talk dogs and catch up. Since we've last seen him, he and another buddy of ours, Jimmy Rodgers, have created an awesome podcast called The Dog House with Adam and Jimmy. If you're a fan of our show, then you'd enjoy theirs. We talk about Adam's dogs and how hot the weather can be for dog training where he's from. Adam gives some warm weather training tips for people and we dig into how Adam preps his dogs to peak at the right time. Specifically, we talk about peaking for the ol' Master Stashional event. We also pick his brain on some water work questions from a few friends of ours and his answers are awesome. Don't miss out on the dog training advice we get to enjoy in this episode! Cheers! Tonight's episode is one of my favorites so don't miss this. First, I really enjoyed the opener and chatting about the brands we like... I got Bob off topic and he got all flustered. Next, we learn how Bob is doing with the adopting some of Oliver's training techniques (if you're wondering what those might be, check out the previous 2 episodes). We also talk about the most recent hunt test where a bunch of dogs passed their tests and we had a handful of lone duck dogs qualify for the Master Stashional out in Idaho. We also chat with Bob about his training day with the local retriever club and how YOU can get involved with some cool clubs near you. Give it a shot, you have nothing to lose by meeting with a club to see if you'd be a good fit. Finally, and I think I'm going out of order here but that's ok, we hear a lot of frustration from Bob and this is the part I really enjoyed...hear me out on this. We get a lot of people who write in asking questions and we try to help problem solve and dissect the training scenario and see what sort of solutions we can create to help make the dog more confident and successful. At least once per day, someone says their dog is great with the collar on or they're great in training but once the collar comes off or once they're at the line for a test, the dog goes nuts. Well, this happens to everyone, even here at the Lone D and tonight, we hear all about it. Bob has been working hard with a few dogs who have soooo much drive that it's pretty tough to manage. Anyway, I liked the conversation because it's raw and straight shooting. This is how training dogs can be, it's hard. If your dog "is nuts and has so much drive they're tough to handle..." you aren't alone and cheers to you. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Tonight's show was a great time and we tried something new: recording during a live stream with our friends on patreon. We hung out and answered some of their questions and were able to interact quite a bit, so we had a really good time and appreciate those who could make it. We catch up with Oliver and get his thoughts on a few specific training scenarios. This was a fun one, I think you'll enjoy it. Be sure to watch for Oliver at Foundation Retrievers... he is one heck of a trainer. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Welp, we've had a couple weeks of chaos with a whole lot of traveling for hunt tests and long days training dogs but we're back and ready to share a few lessons learned. This week, we're hosting Oliver & Andrew from Foundation Retrievers and getting in a lot of good training. Bob and Oliver recap the past few weeks of hunt tests with the dogs, how they performed, where things went wrong and how they're busting butt to problem solve and earn passes. I feel like our show is usually pretty passionate. We put a lot of time and energy into Lone Duck Kennels and you can't help but get worked up talking about the wins and losses because of all the "investment" you put into this kind of work. Well, I think you'll feel the passion in tonight's show as Bob and Oliver dig into training advice and go back and forth with each other. It's certainly a positive discussion centered around building confident dogs and ways to increase the trust and relationship with your dog, but it's super interesting to hear all the different ways to accomplish the same training goal. What do you think? Oliver and Andrew will be here for another week, so we'll do a round two with these guys next time. Did we miss anything or do you have follow up questions? DM us and we'll get to it. Cheers. PS. Check out our buddies at Waypoint Outdoor Collective... they have tons of cool shows and if you like ours, you're gonna love some of our other friends' shows. We've had a lot of people ask questions about mini t, t pattern, how do you get a dog to sit on a whistle, why does my dog loopy sit, etc., so tonight, we're tackling all of it. Bob and I catch up a little but we dig right into the meat of the show and try to thoroughly explain the process from start to finish and when to notice triggers along the way. These "triggers" are little things to watch for to know when your dog is ready for the next step in the process. We also answer a few other questions that came through Instagram ( @loneduck ) about breeding, how to choose parents, how to choose breeders and a whole lot more. Tonight's show hit a lot of interesting topics. Let us know what you think! Cheers. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Tonight's episode was spent chatting with Mike Jones, the founder and head trainer at Primal Canine out in California. Mike is a super knowledgeable guy whose passion for dogs drives his business forward. We hear about Mike's past and how he got into the dog world, we learn about his business and his unique approach to dog training. Unfortunately, we had some time constraints for this show because we struggle with time zone math but we will be having Mike on the show again because we have a whole lot of bite work to talk about. In tonight's show, we hear about how Beam took Bob out searching for redfish and a good time. Tonight, Bob and Kevin chat with our good buddy, Lyle Steinman, from Castile Creek Kennels about how his southern trip is going. Like many people, he has been battling the frigid temps in Texas, which is obviously devastating. On a positive note, we chat about some exciting things happening with his business. A lot of people ask about doing southern training trips and what it's like and so we pull back the curtain a little. It's interesting to hear Lyle's perspective. He's also been focusing in and crushing it with his dogs. As always, it's fun to chat with Lyle and hear what he thinks of specific training topics and what's happening in our industry. Evenin' friends. Tonight we check back in with a great buddy of ours, Captain Jeff Coats. Jeff is one of the greatest hunting guides you could possibly find; he's been in the sea duck game for 21 years, has the world's largest duck boats, crafts his own decoys and trains his own dogs. If you want to learn about sea duck hunting or have the coolest hunt ever, then you'll make a trip to Ocean City, Maryland, and give him a call.... and you should, he has a few spots open for next season (@pitbosswaterfowl). On this episode, we talk about the hunt with Jeff we're doing in December of 2021 where we're randomly picking a patreon supporter and flying them to hunt with us and Jeff. We also hear about Jeff's duck season, how he's working to develop Pitboss HQ, his cool dog, Rye, and a lot more. We hear about an exciting and memorable trip he took with his son and how he is introducing his kids to the outdoors. I realize this is a topic that comes up often but Barton provides a few concrete examples of how he is doing this and man, I respect it. Listen, we've had a really good time doing this podcast over the last 88 shows and this is no different. Tonight, we have the pleasure of cracking jokes with our buddy, Tyler Chambers. He's a blue collar, country singing, dog lovin' kinda guy and he fits right in with us. Tyler has been writing songs in Nashville for a few years now and generously offered to share one of his unreleased songs in the middle of tonight's episode. We bounce all over the place in tonight's show and talk about how Bob shouldn't write songs, deer hunting, using fans to hunt turkeys, we learn about his handsome dog and how he got into hunting. We've had a lot of people ask about chatting with buddies who aren't pros with a hundred dogs in the kennel and more on the side of just a few. This made us think of our pal, Brandon Sweesy, of Northern Air Retrievers. He has a really good dog named Jones that he trained himself by watching Freddie King videos, reading and calling his breeder and you guessed it... actually training the dog in front of him. It was pretty cool to learn more about Brandon's training philosophy and how he handles his dogs in tests. We really dig into a good training discussion and we hope you enjoy it. We were pumped to find out that our new girl, Prairie, is a distant relative to Brandon's younger dog. It's funny how small this world can be, right? Tonight, we chat with one of the greatest dog trainers around, Brad Arrington, from Mossy Pond Retrievers. Bob and Brad met a long time ago and basically, they catch up on the last few ~10 years. What's happened since then? Well, Brad has continued to grow and refine his skills as a trainer, grown an impressive business while maintaining a high level of integrity. Brad helps share some advice for one of Bob's dogs that keeps veering off on specific marks and it provides a really in depth conversation. We also talk about an event he's putting on in the spring and you should check it out. Overall, this is a great episode and we're grateful for Brad's time and friendship. If you're down south near him and need a good trainer, he's your guy. Oh, did you want to throw your hat into the ring for Bob buying you a hunting trip with us? If you've heard our show, then you've probably picked up a trick or two from Blaine and it could be worth looking into. While chatting, Blaine also teaches Bob and I why we're so bad at deer hunting. Nothing like a little chaos to create an impromptu week of training and fun, am I right? Well, that's what happened and we ended up being home for the Free Spirit Gun Dogs crew and we are grateful to have them. We sat down to have a handful of laughs with Molly Boland, an extremely talented dog trainer, hunting guide and overall badass. We kick off the show chatting with Molly about her early years and hear some cool hunting stories from moose to caribou to spearfishing, hand lining & hunting sea ducks in Alaska. We then jump into some good training advice and even hear questions from our close friends on Patreon . We then jump onto Instagram Live to laugh and chat with people about their dogs and offer advice to help them achieve their training goals. Tonight's show was pretty special and I think if you listen, you'll feel that. We truly had a good time chatting with Molly and learning from her. We can just start by saying that tonight's show was pretty awesome. We had the opportunity to sit down and chat with our buddy, Lyle Steinman, before the SRS Championship. We then pick up the positivity and learn about how Lyle's been training his dogs and pushing himself to the max in preparation for the SRS. We also hear some detailed training advice from Lyle in regards to swim by, decheating and a lot more. This week, Bob and Kevin sit down over a beer to reminisce about the fantastic weekend we had. We were fortunate to have a bunch of great people and their talented dogs come hang out, train, eat, drink and be merry with us. We put together a little weekend workshop for amateur trainers and we talk about what everyone learned, force fetch, t pattern, wagon wheel, walking fetch, blinds, force to a pile, holy cow the list goes on. We also had a pretty solid party after the long day, gave away some cool prices and enjoyed ourselves around the bonfire just trading hunting stories. We received such great feedback about our workshop that we'll certainly be doing more in the future. Then we jump on Instagram Live to chat with friends and answer a little Q&A and things get good. I'd highly encourage you to hop on the ol' IG next time we do a live show because it's super handy to see visuals during explanations. This week we recorded our 75th episode of Lone Duck's Gun Dog Chronicles and we're real excited for it. We had the opportunity to speak with Carson Wentz from Eukanuba's Wentz Bros Outdoors and boy did we have a good time. He is one of the most down to earth, genuine guys around. With such a busy schedule, he makes it a priority to spend time outside, unwinding and enjoying a good hunt beside his dog. We learn a little about how Carson got into hunting, training his own dogs and he even provides that I think can apply to a lot of people. We also chat a little about his foundation and other passions in his life. Big shout out to Eukanuba and Carson for coming to hang for a bit. Yup, tonight's show is a goodie. We had the pleasure of chatting with our good buddy, Dakota Mealer, a fine shootin' duck hunter and an even more talented pro dog trainer. We reminisce a little about our Arkansas hunt a few years back (pssst... we should go again!), we learn about how Dakota first started hunting for coons and quail in the Georgia woods and then made his way over to waterfowl. He's been in the game for a long time and is extremely knowledgeable about training and bringing the best out of his dogs. This week's show we meet with a buddy who is no stranger to the hunt test game or a duck blind, Jimmy Rodgers. He has been in the hunting, guiding, dog handling world for a long, long time and has a few tricks up his sleeves and fortunately, he shares a few tonight. Jimmy dabbles in a little bit of both worlds in that he has competed at The Grand and the Master National, so we hear his take on both. We also do a little shot for shot with him and hear an in depth look at heeling sticks, feeding routines, (not professional) thoughts on bloat, advice for people looking for guided hunts, over-pressuring dogs with collar work, how Jimmy is bringing us to Alaska and more.... but really... hold him to it. For tonight's episode, Bob and Kevin chat with our good buddy from Southern Oak Kennels, Barton Ramsey. This is the second time we've had Barton on our show to hang out and he's the man. We discuss his hunting season, how he has been introducing his kids to hunting via the dogs, some of the recent litters and more. Oh, we also chat about the SOK dog that is currently studying up here in NY at Lone Duck HQ, Roscoe (he's the man!). Then we mix things up and do a little shot for shot Q&A with Barton where we shared an Instagram Live and really had a good time. Barton shares some of his favorite marking drills, what they've been doing to stay effective during this shutdown, addressing possessive behavior, an ETA on the return of his stache, and a lot more. Tonight, Bob and Kevin sat down to catch up on a few things since it's been a while. First, apologies for the lack of shows; we've had a few things come up but we're back, babayy. Bob and Memphis recently competed in the Super Retriever Series so we talk through what that looked like and how they did. We also hear about the latest Lone Duck litters! If you're interested in having a high-end and meticulously well cared for puppy, then shoot us a message and we'll see if we're a good fit for you. Finallyyy Bob and Kevin dig into a little t pattern action. What is t pattern? Well, it's an early step in the process of learning blinds. Bob has a few dogs working through t pattern right now so we talk through some of the problem solving he's had to do to build confidence in the younger dogs. PS. We also shared some somber news about a good buddy of ours, Matt. He's been on previous shows with us and generously invited us down to his home to train and hunt and he recently experienced the absolute worst thing for a dog trainer, a kennel fire. Our other buddy, Barton at SOK, set up a go fund me for Matt and if you're able to, send something to help out (prayers, cash, dog pics, etc.) during this awful time... Matt's the kind of guy who would send something to you if roles reversed. Tonight, Bob and Kevin speak with Dr. Spoo (@gundogdoc), a sporting dog vet specialist. This was probably the longest episode we've done because we just had such a good time laughing and talking gun dogs with Dr. Spoo. If you've ever had a question about your dog's health, we probably covered it here so take some notes-- seriously. Topics were all over the place tonight (in the best kind of way) and here's a few things we covered with Dr. Spoo: the dewclaw debate, useful med kits for the field, dogs and CBD oil, nutrition advice for puppies, pregnant females, supplements at various ages, Freudian slips, hunting stories from Dr. Spoo, what to do when your dog blows out a knee, how to flush an eye, proper rehab for dogs. his new podcast, Fueled, and a lot more. If you found this show helpful, please share it with a friend and be sure to leave us a review. We read each one and sincerely take your feedback into consideration to improve the show for everyone. Tonight, Bob and Kevin were lucky to speak with Fritz Heller, a Michigan man who knows a thing or two about hunting for grouse. Search "grouse commander" and you'll find out what I mean... Fritz has been hunting grouse for years and has a unique method you don't normally hear about; he uses labs, only. He has found that if you can train the dog properly, the grouse flush better by a dog than by a person, so you're able to position yourself better to increase chances of a clean shot. We learned how Fritz trains his labs for grouse hunting, the weather patterns and where to find them during various times of the season and I'd be a liar if I said I didn't take notes. I really had a good time talking with Fritz, he's the man. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Tonight we welcomed Lyle Steinman of Castile Creek Kennels to the show. Lyle has been in the hunt test game for a number of years and has more accolades than I can comprehend. We got to hear a little about how Lyle got started working with dogs and how things have evolved over time and then BAM we jump right into some advanced training advice. We had a lot of fantastic questions come through and weren't able to get to everyone so Lyle said he'd be happy to come back on the show and continue chatting... we'll have the ol' cell service thing figured out by then, too. Welcome to the new year. This week's show we hit a few awesome segments but first we recap this year's Christmas Eve grouse hunt with Andi, Covey, Nick & Huey. We then get into a question from Gunner Kennels about winter training and how to keep your dog sharp as the season gets closed. Now, the bulk of this show is dedicated to something important so please listen closely. We talk about e collars. Why do we use them at Lone Duck Kennels, what if your dog is "too soft" for one (they aren't), how do you carefully scale pressure to receive the desired response, why we don't like the vibrate option and a lot more. We receive questions all the time about e collars and how people are nervous to use them so hey, let's talk about it. Let us know what you think of this episode, please. Shoot us a review on iTunes (5 stars would be cool), a DM on Instagram, an email at loneduckpodcast @ gmail . com... whatever works for you. We'd love to chat more about this topic so you can have a happy & healthy dog and feel more confident about training. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Welcome back from the holiday break, everyone. I hope you ate your bodyweight in sugar cookies like me. For tonight's episode, we're fortunate to speak with Tom Keer. Tom's passion for both gritty hunting dogs and swingin' flies over good water has settled him into a life as a writer and business owner... and the latest friend to our show! Tom has the ability to tell a story like no other and we could have talked for hours. Surprisingly, we didn't really cover much of his writing career (this time) because we jumped right into his English Setters, hunting stories, what makes for productive grouse cover and a lot more. If you're interested in finding some of Tom's writing, give his name a quick Google and you'll see that he's in every cool magazine you probably already subscribe to. Tonight's show was a little unique because the three of us were all in different locations (so be patient with the audio). Regardless, kick back with some coffee and enjoy. Cheers. Well, we tried something a little different, folks. Tonight, it's snowy and we settled in for an AMA-style show where we rattled off all sorts of questions for Bob to answer. We flipped on Instagram Live to really put him on the spot and he didn't know what sort of things were lined up-- so we laughed and had a good time. Yes, we go through some dog training advice but we also learn about Bob's preferred dog names, his time wrestling goats, life in Ireland, his list of guns I didn't realize was so long, how Bob fell into owning Andi, boiled peanuts and a lot more. Like I said, it's a different kind of show but I think you'll laugh, feel like you know us more and still walk away with a few mini training tricks up your sleeve. Cheers, friends. Tonight, Bob and Kevin had the pleasure of chatting with our new buddy, Dennis from Duck Blind Coffee. We got to hear about his time starting a company and how he meticulously roasts his own beans to better serve the duck hunting community... and others, too. I really enjoyed hearing some hunting stories and we even chatted about gun shy dogs. If you're going to introduce your dog to gunfire or you think you have a gun shy dog, listen to this show. As always, we want to be as transparent as possible and I tried some new audio things in an attempt to improve our show and well, I'm not so sure I was successful. Last night, Bob and Kevin sit down to continue our conversation about the proper way to teach your dog force fetch. If you haven't listened to episode 43 yet, then go back and do that first so this one makes sense. This is generally a sensitive topic because there's a lot of people who don't understand this technique and there's a lot of people doing it wrong. Well, we want to help educate people about force fetch and you can make the decision for yourself. Topics include: ear pinch walking fetch, collar walking fetch, ladder & beginning force to pile and a few questions from our Instagram live session. As always, thank you for your support. What if my dog is too old, young, soft, stubborn, small, big, etc. Well, tonight we're starting our two part series on every single inch of force fetch. Let us know what you think in our DMs @loneduck. Thank you to everyone for all the kind words, feedback and reviews. You're awesome and please know you're greatly appreciated. PS. It feels good to be back in action. Apologies for the lull in shows but things were quite busy over the past few weeks, as we'll get into during the show. Bob and Kevin sit down to review the past few weeks filled with Golden Retriever puppies and a trip to Master National with Memphis, Ember and Cruz. Bob describes the set up for each series and shares how each dog performed. We are proud and humbled with the outcome of this competition and are excited to share it with everyone who supported Lone Duck during The Stashional. I think this show got a little more emotional than we expected. It's an incredible experience when long hours of hard work and grit pays off. As a bonus, we learn about Bob's bowels, too. Tonight's show is a good one and certainly interesting. Bob is down at Blaine Tarnecki's house training and they're gearing up for Master National. We talk through the dogs that are running, how they're getting set for the competition and some solid Q&A. Now, the Q&A that we had come through this week was honestly tough. One of the most asked questions we receive is how to be a dog trainer or how awesome is it to "just play with dogs all day." Well, tonight we lift the hood and share with everyone what it's really like. It's unique and I hope you can appreciate the honesty and transparency we're trying to share. PS. Howdy folks. Bob and I sat down last night to talk through his morning walking the fields and dense woods alongside friends and some of our favorite dogs. To my surprise, he actually dropped a couple beautiful birds and he breaks down the whole trip for us, it's a pretty good story. Bob and I also discuss a few housekeeping items, including cool Gunner products and Birdie's pregnancy. If you're interested in a red Golden pup, DM us at @loneduck on Instagram. We also jump into some fantastic Q&A from friends in our community (thanks for writing in and following along!) about all things retriever training and even a little follow up on Huey's Utility Test.
