XVGM Radio is a VGM podcast, done in the style of a radio show. It was established in 2018 with one simple mission in mind: to bring an awesome & eclectic mix of Video Game Music to your ears! Each episode will bring you new music, new topics, and hopefully show you something you may not have heard, or might not have thought to listen to otherwise. With co-hosts Mike Levy, Justin Schneider, Ed Wilson, & NikoTengoku, you’ll hear from game music composers, fellow VGM lovers and podcasters as well as musicians within the scene. Why listen

XVGM Radio plays like a crate-digging radio show for video game music fans, with hosts trading stories, jokes, composer context, and full track blocks around a specific theme. It is especially good if you love retro games, obscure soundtracks, chiptunes, FM synth, arcade history, or hearing passionate fans explain why a forgotten track deserves attention. The show mixes music discovery with friendly banter, so it feels more like hanging out with knowledgeable VGM collectors than listening to a formal lecture.

Dragon Quest I, II and III with Ryan and Cam

Dragon Quest has had 11 mainline games, tons of spinoffs and ports galore. It’s a franchise known for ushering in the foundation of the Japanese Role Playing Game, or the JRPG. Originating on the Famicom in the mid 1980s, the game saw not one but FOUR games release on Nintendo’s first console. In this episode, we’ve decided to focus on the first three, known as the Erdrick Trilogy. With good friends and patrons of the show on board, Ryan and Cam, we were in good hands as Mike and Justin know very little. Now we’re blessed by two pros joining us to share their knowledge and music choices in this classic trilogy of games. Covering not just the NES originals but other ports as well, the XVGM Radio guys get down with the charming classical wonder of Koichi Sugiyama’s Dragon Quest (or Warrior if your nasty!) soundtracks. JRPG fans do NOT wanna miss this episode of XVGM Radio! We swear, it’ll be a GOOd time! We’d love to hear what you thought about this game series and the tracks we’ve picked! The Music of Shinji Hosoe

Many video game music composers try their best to fit into different musical genres but few do it as well as composers like Shinji Hosoe. On today’s episode of XVGM Radio, Mike and Ed discuss several of Hosoe’s game soundtracks, highlighting a wide variety of musical tracks. From techno and jungle to power metal and back to chiptunes, you can truly appreciate his chameleon-like nature to fit his music with a different style. Super Scope Games

It’s time for the holidays…and what did people receive as a gift during this time of year back in 1992? The Super Scope 6 of course! Nintendo’s successor to the NES Zapper was a bazooka-shaped monolith of potential. Though the final game library was small, the Super Scope 6 was full of untold gaming possibilities. From arcade ports like Operation Thunderbolt and Terminator 2: The Arcade Game, to Nintendo originals like Battle Clash, Metal Combat and Yoshi’s Safari, Super Scope brought a wave of innovation combined with top notch durability. Today’s episode focuses on the music from the library of Super Scope games. The XVGM Radio guys get a friendly but frazzled visit from co-podcaster RayjKayj of The VGMPorium, as well as discuss Justin’s fond memories playing Tinstar. Plus…Arnold Schwarzenegger himself calls in?! Maybe….or Maybe not. You’ll never know if you don’t click that play episode on our finale to 2025! Same Song, Different Arrangement: Phantom Breaker BattleGrounds Ultimate

Mike’s been raving about Phantom Breaker Battle Grounds for almost a decade. The heart-pumping soundtrack, exciting chibi anime beat-em up styled gameplay and intuitive leveling up system is a prime example of a game that should’ve gained more appreciation over the years. When the most recent version of the game, Phantom Breaker Battle Grounds Ultimate came out this year, we knew it was time to FINALLY showcase the music for this game in a proper episode. SO, we decided to bring on a special guest which many will recognize as a familiar voice. Human Entertainment: The Musical History

Today on XVGM Radio, we’re taking a look (and listen) to the audio history of Human Entertainment. Formed via a merger between Try Co. Ltd. and Communicate Inc in 1987, Human Entertainment was initially called Sonata, mostly handling ports from larger developers such as Konami and Bandai. After two years of this, 1989 saw the name change to Human Entertainment, where the company began creating their own IPs. Learn about how they created a development school which is where many of their development staff came from, their bankruptcy in 1999, and where many of their more notable staff members ended up continuing on the tradition of making weird, wacky games. Justin and Mike as the question: is a Human Sports Festival played with Humans as the balls? With a surprising mix of both wavetable tunes and redbook audio, there’s a bunch of variety in musical genres to choose from with Human Entertainment and it’s ONLY on XVGM Radio! Prison City w/ composer Matt Creamer

Matt Creamer, aka Radd Daddy, aka Norrin Radd, RETURNS to XVGM Radio to talk about his amazing soundtrack for Retroware’s Prison City game. We’ve chat with Matt previously about many of his soundtracks, even had him on one of our live shows before! A true friend to the podcast, Matt isn’t afraid to get into the nitty gritty details about how he carefully crafts his soundtracks. A self proclaimed “puzzle solver” when it comes to music creation, Matt Creamer delves into the new way he composes classic NES style soundtracks, and the XVGM boys grill him on his influences this time around (Groove and industrial metal?! The Batman and Goonies NES OSTs?!) and so much more! Join Matt, Justin and Mike for a long but utterly satisfying chat about Prison City on the latest episode of XVGM Radio! Lethal Enforcers I & II (Same Song, Different System)

Marred in 90s era video game controversy, Konami’s Lethal Enforcers series, along with Mortal Kombat, Night Trap, and several other games, had ironic targets on their backs for their innovative, realistic (at the time) graphics involving firing a fake plastic gun at the screen, killing human targets. Years later, the series is best known for pushing buttons in the North American political atmosphere, which is a shame because it SHOULD be known for their amazing soundtracks! Today on XVGM Radio, Justin and Mike go a few rounds with some Lethal Enforcers 1 and 2 tunes, comparing the versions and picking which ones they like the best after their heavy analyzing. Well worth the price of admission, you’ll be firing in quarters like crazy into your phone to reload more amazing tunes full of orchestra synth hits, SNES Midi guitar, along with tons of comparison to other Konami OSTs. The Music Of Tengo Project

Returning to the topic of Natsume’s musical history, Mike and Justin revisit one last time for a sort of epilogue on the history of Natsume via Tengo Project. Formed from an offshoot of Natsume Co. Ltd in the mid to late 2000s, Tengo Project is a small team of Natsume’s original staff who have been revisiting the company’s past to remake or create sequels to some of their most famous games. From Ninjas to shrine maidens and even a sort of wild, wild west, Tengo Project’s games have captured a snapshot of the past while recreating it for a modern era. Today, the XVGM Radio guys listen to some incredible music from Hiroyuki Iwatsuki as well as Iku Mizutani, in an era where both Natsume composers revisit their legendary past. High Score Jamz

High score rankings have been a thing since the 70s in video games. But the music layered behind them didn’t really pick up until the 80s. Justin and Mike examine these tunes to explore the eastern vs western comparisons. Eastern composers tend to create much shorter high score music than western composers and the guys find a few tracks here and there that do show the differences in tone and style. Filled with influences from prog and classic rock, funk, r&b, dance and new wave genres, today’s episode pulls no punches with tracks from Amiga, arcade, 16 bit systems and even some redbook audio! There’s even a newer track buried in here to prove that high score tunes have a life beyond the 80s and 90s! We hope you’ll rank this one high on your podcast list! Many of today’s indie and AA developers know their retro. That’s why there’s an abundance of amazing games available for modern platforms which channel the games of our pasts. Musical Therapy: An Interview w/ Norihiko Hibino

Music touches all aspects of the soul. It’s a large part of what makes us human. In tough times or happy moments and everything in between, music can be therapy in many ways and video game music is no different. On today’s episode, we sit down for a chat with Norihiko Hibino and listen to one of his favorite genre offerings: Jazz music. We listen to a few tracks from his latest album, Jazz Resort, Vol. 2. He talks about his influences (John Coltrane,) and shares stories about his time at Konami (What was lunch time like in Konami’s headquarters?) Mike asks some blatantly selfish questions about Castlevania and we learn about some close, personal composer friends of his. We also get to hear stories about Hideo Kojima and how Hibino’s hectic schedule worked when composing for multiple projects at the same time. For Konami, Metal Gear and Jazz fans, this is an episode you DO NOT want to miss! Huge thanks to Scarlet Moon Productions and Jayson Napolitano for making this happen for us! The NEC PC-FX

In 1994, video game system manufacturers were just starting to shift into the realm of 3D-based video game consoles thanks to the fifth generation. But one company decided to continue building upon the legacy of 2D in the mid-90s with their final console release: NEC. The PC-FX was host to 62 games which utilized 2D animated content, with a focus on Japanese animation being highlighted in many of them. With a combination of redbook audio and the same sound chip that was in the PC-Engine (Turbo Grafx-16 for us North Americans,) the PC-FX was host to some incredible musical content. The Musical History of Natsume Part 3

Continued from Episodes 99 and 102, Mike and Justin close out the musical history of the developer, Natsume Co. Ltd. After the split between Natsume Co. Ltd. and Natsume Inc, Natsume Co. Ltd. would continue to work on developing games, mostly on the Super NES and eventually handhelds like the Game Boy Color. Here is where we get to see a bigger shift in focus to games based on licensed IPs as well as being published by the likes of companies such as THQ, Crave, and of course Natsume Inc. Continuing to explore the exciting music from Natsume legends like Iku Mizutani, Kinuyo Yamashita and Hiroyuki Iwatsuki, its a bit bittersweet to close out this look back at the incredible run Natsume has had in video games and video game music. However, right around the corner is the modern re-investment into some of Natsume’s most beloved titles courtesy of Tengo Project, a small group of original Natsume devs who are still with the company today. But for now, join us as we close out this exciting listen to Natsume’s musical history books. We hope you’ve enjoyed our three part journey through Natsume’s musical history. Shantae Tunes

Wayforward’s Shantae on the Game Boy Color was the swansong release on the handheld and the beginning of a franchise in the making. The Musical History of Natsume Part 2: Natsume Inc.

Continued from Episode 99, Mike and Justin hit the dusty trail of Natsume’s musical history for a second time to uncover the North American-based publishing (and sometimes development) side of the company. Splitting from Natsume Co. Ltd. in 1995, Natsume Inc. began publishing a wide variety of games mostly in North America. From tales of what happened to the later years of the Harvest Moon series to discussion of the publisher’s focus on handhelds (almost exclusively,) the XVGM Radio boys take shovel to dirt to uncover some of Natsume Inc’s publishing history and how the Natsume Co. Ltd still sometimes worked with them on many projects. You’ll hear a few throwback tracks to the Co. Ltd days with composers like Iku Mizutani and Kinuyo Yamashita while exploring new ground with a bevy of RPGs, fishing games and….anime hamsters?! Yep, That’s XVGM Radio, alright. Stay tuned for a future episode where we bring you part 3 (sometime in 2023.) The Musical History of Natsume (Part 1)

It’s Technostasy! Since 1987, Natsumi, a company created by ex-Konami employees, has been one of the best developers from the 8 and 16 bit eras of gaming. However, their history has been muddled by confusing ownership and history to the common fan. Today on XVGM Radio, Mike and Justin uncover the truth behind Natsume’s story in part 1 of a multi-part series on the history of Natsume’s company, games and most importantly, its sound. Hear about the beginnings of the developer and eventual self-publisher, which started out as Natsume Co. Ltd. From 1987 until 1995, the company was host to some of the best soundtracks available. We scratch the surface on these incredible, high energy tracks from the NES, Game Boy, Super NES…and even a PC Engine game?! A handful of legendary composers are spotlighted in this episode, as Mike gushes on his love for Natsume, Justin discusses metal arm replacement options, and the boys wrap up their first 99 episodes with an absolute BANGER of a closing track from none other than….well, you’ll just have to hear it for yourself! Arwing Odyssey w/ Ro Panuganti

Star Fox 64 is sometimes viewed as the evolution in the Star Fox franchise’s musical journey. But with this more cinematic orchestral vision, the sounds of a more popular style of music has disappeared. But with musician Ro Panuganti’s prowess, Arwing Odyssey is born. A Progressive Metal thematic voyage through most of Star Fox 64’s music, Panuganti brings the modern musical themes back into play. Join us as we speak with him as we compare the original Star Fox 64 tracks with Ro’s updated arrangements. We speak to him about how Respawned Records approached him with the idea and how he had to fit the arrangement into a vinyl format upfront. Listen to Mike and Justin break down both of these styles artisitcally, all while sharing some fun Star Fox 64 memories from the 90s! PS2/PSP VGM Memories

It’s well known that Sony’s Playstation 2 dominated sales during the 6th generation of gaming. However, this was also during the era where Sony attempted to take on the task of toppling Nintendo’s handheld juggernaut abilities. Enter the Sony Playstation Portable, Sony’s first major foray into the handheld market. Many games from the PS2 were given handheld versions on the PSP and while this is an interesting discussion point, the guys at XVGM Radio decided to just bask in the glory of the 6th generation, Sony style. Today’s episode is an exploration into some PS2 and PSP games with the occasional example of crossover. Mike threatens to discuss Castlevania until he turns blue, all while we learn about Justin’s price point on Amazon. From racist Mega Man boss discussions to feeling inadequate thanks to a royal pain in the butt, today’s a great way to break open some Thanksgiving Day leftovers and enjoy some PS2/PSP nostalgia discussion! Nicole Marie T Composer Interview

Indie composers of video games are leading the way with their creativity, ingenuity and hunger to create the next wave of classics. One such composer is Nicole Marie T, who we had the pleasure of interviewing. From her love and appreciation of Sega to her evolution into a Sony fan, Nicole’s video game upbringing shines through her music as she churns out tons of tunes that we showcased in this interview. From hearing about her reaction to seeing her name in the credits of her first game to her excitement over orchestral tunes, you’ll get to hear a prime example of the next generation of VGM composers in this very episode. Masters of VGM

If you had to pick four legendary composers that best represents you…as well as all of video game music, who would you pick? Well, that’s the question that our pal Bedroth from VGMVGM (Very Good Music Video Game Music) Podcast asked the community of VGM podcasters…and we broke the rules and picked a bonus one, because we’re rule breakers. Yeah, that’s right. Your boys from XVGM Radio are here to break down all the barriers. All jokes aside though, Mike and Justin pick their heaviest of hitters in their VGM opinions. From discussions on the impressive echo of Iku Mizutani’s NES bangers, to the sentimental tears Justin shed over Final Fantasy 9’s ending, XVGM Radio takes you through some of their favorite composers and the tracks they feel best represent them. Nostalgic Themes

Nostalgia can be a powerful thing. Growing up in the 80s and 90s, there was plenty of stuff Mike and Justin reflected on in this episode from their youth. Though as always when they pick a topic, sometimes they approach the idea differently for fun results. Episode 90 is a perfect representation of this method of madness. Listen to the guys wax nostalgia when talking about retro television, cartoons and how the theme songs converted to video games. They also go over the composers on the original theme songs and their thoughts on comparing them. Mike gets goofy with the best anime ever (courtesy of the internet meme about Corey in the House), Justin shares his take on Dragon Ball Z’s music, Mike talks about college drinking games involving Power Rangers, and the guys collectively discuss sick days with Bob Barker, all on this memory-filled episode of XVGM Radio! The Best & Worst of Gems Driver Songs (w/ specia guest Dya)

The Sega Genesis GEMS Driver is often considered one of the worst drivers created for video game music. However, we are optimists when it comes to most chips, so today, we’re taking a deep look into the GEMS driver. Who created it, why it was important to Western composers, the benefits of it and the downfalls. Justin and Mike aim to examine the good AND bad parts of it, to unearth some game music that you might not have known about. Aaron Hickman of the Genesis Gems podcast is also known as chiptune and VGM composer DYA. He joins us on this episode to help explain some of the nitty gritty details regarding GEMS and the Sega sound in general. From bad Sylvester Stallone impressions, to Mike absolutely losing it whenever Captain Salty is discussed….to a surprise phone call from someone claiming to be Tommy Tallarico, this episode of XVGM Radio has it all! Super Nintendo: ORCHESTRATED with Orchestral Fantasy

The Super Nintendo is known for having some of the most lush compositions in 16 bit history. But have you ever wondered what these tracks would sound like with real instruments? Our guest today is Andrew Thompson who runs a musical project where he answers that very question and the results are EPIC! Mike and Justin sit down with Andrew to discuss and compare his orchestrated versions with real instrumentation, while mostly staying faithful to the original compositions. If you’re a fan of JRPGs on the SNES, this is NOT an episode to miss! ***There were some connection issues regarding the first two breaks so we apologize in advance for the static-sounding voice on Andrew. After numerous trial and error, we decided to record separately and combine the breaks after the problem could not be solved. Thanks for understanding.*** We’d like to thank Andrew for being on the show. Please check out his content on both Youtube and Soundcloud as well as the latest album, Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/OrchestralFantasy/videos Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/andrewt81 Beyond Fantasy Album: https://open.spotify.com/album/1RRCELKYi5sMU62joCGcqs What was your favorite track of the episode? Dimo's Quest CD-i Spotlight

While single games have been covered before on XVGM Radio, never before have we went into a soundtrack without hearing it period. Taking a page from our pal Ed Wilson over at The VGMbassy, we’re doing a “Blind Listen” episode where we pick tracks we haven’t heard, and learn about the game as we go along. The end result is a hilarious episode where Mike and Justin try to figure out PCM samples’ origins, listen to a totally radical soundtrack we’ve never heard before, deal with an explosion in the studio…and take a caller request from…Janine?! It’s all on this very exciting episode of XVGM Radio! Shout out to Ed Wilson for the idea of doing a Blind Listen! Head over to his podcast for more of these: www.theVGMbassy.com What was your favorite track of the episode? Are you a fan of this soundtrack? Yakuza Games w/ Alex From A VGM Journey

On XVGM Radio, we generally are pretty knowledgable about the subject matter of both game music and the game series we discuss. But what about when we’re not familiar with a franchise or its tunes? We bring in someone who’s played them all and in this circumstance that would be patron saint of video game music podcasts and leader of his own show, Alex Messenger of A VGM Journey. Together, we discuss Alex’s history with the Yakuza series as Justin and Mike experience the franchise through Alex. From misheard vocal lyrics “Can You Hungry – Just Brillo!” to Mike’s experience growing up listening to whatever his parents played in the car and of course Justin had to jokingly give Mike a hard time about a track! Come along for the trip to Japan as we chat about one of Sega’s newer yet most prominent IPs of the PS2 era and beyond! This…is a journey through the Yakuza franchise’s video game music! Big thank you to Alex from A VGM Journey for joining us on this show! You can check out his podcast at https://anchor.fm/vgmjourney or other podcatchers! What was your favorite track of the episode?
