Wisconsin Supreme Court to take up recusal rules

Recusal rules for Wisconsin judges could soon get an update, after more than fifteen years of no change and a pair of court elections that broke national spending records. The state Supreme Court is slated to examine a proposal Thursday that would tighten the standards. But some legal groups are urging the justices to study the issue carefully before they adopt any major changes. To find out why, our News Producer Faye Parks sat down with Brittany Carloni, a state government and politics reporter at Wisconsin Watch. Image courtesy: Royal Broil via Flickr.

UW-Madison student org defends anti-Ridglan flyers

Hundreds of animal rights activists converged on Ridglan Farms in April, the second attempt this spring to break in and seize the beagles being held at the dog breeding and research facility. Ahead of the raid, UW-Madison student organization Animal Advocacy spread flyers across campus to raise awareness about the issue and get the wider community involved. The university is now investigating whether those flyers encouraged participation in criminal activity, a violation of the student organization code of conduct. Jackson Ray, president of Animal Advocacy, told our News Producer Faye Parks that they were exercising their First Amendment rights – and the university has a pattern of targeting on-campus activism that conflicts with their bottom line. Indian Citizenship Act Passes, 1924

June 2nd is the 102nd anniversary of the passage of the Indian Citizenship Act, which declared that all Native Americans in the United States to be citizens, completing a decades-long process of piecemeal granting of citizenship to Native Americans, though it did not immediately grant the right to vote and was opposed by some native groups at the time due to concerns about sovereignty and treaty rights. Harry Richardson has the story. Image shows President Calvin Coolidge posed with Natives, possibly from the Plateau area in the Northwestern United States, near the south lawn of the White House. The biggest, most costly food safety recall in the history of the United States.

“The biggest, most costly food safety recall in the history of the United States," is what Pete Hardin is calling the April 2026 recall of powdered milk and buttermilk from California Dairies Inc. Some of the companies that are affected are Ghirardelli Chocolate, Costco’s frozen meatloaf, and Chick-Fil-A’s bread coating. Exports are continuing to Mexico and Asia where some of its being used in infant formula. But there is still a strong demand for dairy proteins and pricing has increased dramatically. The U.S. Department of Agriculture uses the dairy powder as a basis for pricing and with shortages in the market, consumers will be feeling the financial pain once again.
