TRASHFUTURE
TRASHFUTURE·Hosted by Riley Quinn, Milo Edwards, Hussein Kesvani and Nate Bethea·999 episodes
comedy show about late stage capitalism fucking our lives up. acct run by @raaleh other cohosts are @HKesvani, @milo_edwards, @inthesedeserts, @postoctobrist and friends / line go down!
Why listen
TRASHFUTURE is a chaotic, very online comedy panel about politics, tech hype, collapsing institutions, and the strange business ideas produced by late capitalism. Episodes usually mix host banter, current-affairs riffs, and guests who bring expertise on media, transport, AI, finance, labor, or international politics. It is a strong fit if you like left-wing political comedy that treats startups, Westminster, billionaires, and bad policy as both absurd and consequential.
Episodes
Jensen Huang sold his leather jacket for charity… and we look at exactly what that charity is and does. Then in the second half, Nathan Tankus is back to discuss the ongoing plot to create an imperial presidency by Touching the Money like never before. We needed to up the chaos a bit so we watched the terrible 2021 film LOCKED DOWN with our good friends Mattie Lubchansky (of the No Gods No Mayors podcast) and Hesse Deni (of the Seeking Derangements and Trouble in River City podcasts)! We’ve got some serious issues: Iran is too real of a country to ignore, and Saudi Arabia is becoming a real country in that it suddenly can’t find $300m to fund the LIV Golf tournament in Louisiana. Because something happened regarding the thing that it uses to make all its money from? We also dig into Israel’s occupation of Lebanon as “means of thwarting a peace deal” and as default function in a state run by people who need a war happening to stay out of prison. But don’t worry, we keep it really optimistic. Get more from Séamus here! And also check out the Turbulence podcast here! Get more TF episodes each week by subscribing to our Patreon here! UK newspapers are desperate to convince you that the future of politics in the country is a weird 19-year-old Reform council leader in Warwick. It doesn't matter that Warwick doesn't have a cathedral (it's just a big church! it's not the same thing!) and none of the upstart right-wing politicians want to address the actual quality of life issues. The issue is, as always, wokeness. Also, we talk about recent (bad; transphobic) developments at Stonewall and the weird freak wizard lady who always shows up for some reason. Riley has been driven insane by a… company hinging on a single Australian man that appears to be bamboozling the British State with complex financial chicanery, and now you all have to hear the story of how NScale started out as a landlord for bitcoin miners and became the government’s best hope for a “Sovereign AI” but that has only a scaffolding yard to its name. Except it also doesn’t own the scaffolding yard either. Get the whole episode on Patreon here! Josh is back to talk about his specialist subject - media consolidation by the Ellisons! But we also look at a possible upcoming energy price crunch (at time of recording anyway) and assess how prepared Britain is. All this following a trip down memory lane in Dartford. Ed and Jathan from This Machine Kills are back to talk about the false choice between the good guy A.I. and the bad guy AI that - at the end of the day - are coming from the same horrible pipe. Also, a funeral for brewdog, a new tie up for eight sleep, and Farage continues to Starmerify. Get the whole episode on Patreon here! What if we put new, unwoke Switzerland on a major geopolitical fault line? We look at the world the day after the US-Israeli attack on Iran, including how Europe, the Middle East, and UAE based crypto hustlers will respond. We're joined by recurring guest and friend of the show Ed Zitron to discuss Stargate, the Citrini AI report, and an article about someone's quest to make eternal Scott Adams. For lack of a better word, it is a lot. Check out Ed's work here! Get the whole episode on Patreon here! TF Merch is still available here! An upcoming by-election in Gorton and Denton has the British political class confronting, and failing to learn from, the fact that at some point someone has to govern. In a war of bins versus posts, they've decided to go all-out with posting, firing up the Anti-Corbyn Machine against Zack Polanski and failing to grasp why the Green Party might actually appeal to voters. And in order to understand this, we've assembled Riley, Hussein, and November to cut through the noise. We also discuss a new podcast entitled The Rest Is Prison, which hardly needs to be explained! We've unlocked this bonus episode! We've had a perfect storm of illness among the entire cast and it became impossible to record this week, but we'll be back later in the week with a new bonus, and will have a new free episode next week. Riley, Nova, and Hussein chug some down some heavy metals, talk about rare earths, ChatGPT’s OTHER other detour into porn (before curing cancer), and the slow death of neoliberalism. Then, Wired does some crucial journalism: talking to Cybertruck owners who all need to find polite ways of saying they have a “getting yelled at” fetish.
Cory’s back and in studio! We talk about the financial and legal shenanigans plaguing Elon Musk’s latest wheeze, reconfirm data centres in space are utterly moronic (part of said wheeze), and check in on the latest round of mawkish sentimentality being used to extend the surveillance state. Also we learn about a dot com bubble era startup called Cab Candy, which does exactly what you think it does. Get more TF episodes each week by subscribing to our Patreon here! We discuss the new Epstein revelations that show that jeevacation also had a day job as a kind of nefarious Forrest Gump, facilitating or gleefully observing a huge number of the events that made our world feel so irredeemable, connecting a world of post-Soviet and American oligarchs with European aristocrats, western financiers, and basically every intelligence agency. In the second half, we talk to sociologist Paolo Gerbaudo about Ellison and friends’ acquisition of TikTok USDS and what that means for politics and social media going forward. We’re joined by Blood Work’s Greg Foley to discuss the ongoing wave of state violence in the United States, and think about what makes this time different and altogether more worrying. Also, we look at the Labour Party shooting itself in the head rather than ceding any control to non-Morgan McSweeneys… but before any of that we look at what’s happening in a country that dealt with its fascism problem properly. Dan Boeckner joins for more CanCon as Mark Carney continues his journey from central banker to Maoist Third Worldist “death to amerikkka” insurgent leader in charge of the Hoser Mujahedeen. Also, we don’t want to be all IR all the time in the IR world we live in now, so we return to the orbs and the ongoing evidence that AI is useless and everybody except CEOs hates it. A rare assemblage of November, Hussein, and Nate discuss the happenings of the day: Europeans deploying forces to Greenland to stave off Trump actually doing the thing; Trump's coterie of freaks claiming they're going to offer refugee status in America to British Jews; an article about an AI-powered restaurant chain where the machine not only cooks your food, but also invents your food. It doesn't sound great, if we're being honest! Get more TF episodes each week by subscribing to our Patreon here!
