In this Life Offset episode, John Bregel sits down with cinematographer Jared Levy for a wide-ranging conversation about what actually shapes a cinematographer's creative voice and most of it happens away from set.Jared breaks down the DP's role into three pillars: image-making, managerial, and political. While technical skill is table stakes at a certain level, he argues that the real differentiator is everything you bring from your lived experience. You can't recreate emotion on screen if you haven't felt the full depth of those emotions yourself. The conversation covers the tension between chasing what's visually trendy versus creating from genuine self-exploration, why the best director-DP relationships are rooted in something closer to love than professional convenience, and how to actually listen to that quiet inner voice on set that's telling you something isn't right.Jared also gets into the practical reality of saying no to work, compartmentalizing commercial jobs versus narrative passion projects, and why incremental success built on long-term relationships matters more than chasing any single career-changing opportunity.Enjoy!Life Off Set - Jon BregelJon Bregel has come on board to host a new series on the podcast called "Life Off Set". We did it!!!500 episodes of the podcast. It might not be a big deal to many of you but for me this is a huge milestone. I never thought I would do 10 episodes. It is wild to think about but this is a project that is bigger than almost anything else I have been a part of in my career. So many hours of conversations with fantastic DPs from all over the world working on all sorts of projects. It has been a lot of fun over the years and we have had some great guests on along the way. So many cinematographers came on and shared their tips and secrets. I tried to steal as much as I could and I hope you did as well.Hearing from listeners all around the world over the years on the value they have found in the episodes has been a real treat and I am glad the show managed to find such an appreciative audience.A special thanks to all of the Patreon supporters who have made it possible to work on this week in and week out for over a decade. Everything that I wanted to accomplish in filmmaking when I started this show I somehow managed to achieve in and a large piece that made it all possible was the knowledge picked up in these conversations. If I can have a career there is no doubt you listening can also make it happen. This week on the podcast Jon Bregel is back to host another conversation in the "Life Off Set" series. This time he sat down with cinematographer Oliver Millar as they discussed a wdie range of topics that, for the most part, are often ignored in the regular programming of this podcast. These episodes are less technical, less trying glean some useful lighting or camera information and more hearing what it is like to actually have a career in filmmaking. What is it like to be away half the year, how do you balance that with relationships, with health, with your own state of mind.I am a huge fan of Oliver's work and he is tremendously talented as a cinematographer so it was nice to hear him speak on the sacrifices (or lack there of) at his level. It is one thing to have a busy schedule and a completely different beast to have a successful career. Be sure to check out more about Jon and his work with filmmakers below. It seems like a no brainer for the person in the right situation looking to breakthrough in some area of their career.Enjoy!Life Off Set - Jon BregelJon Bregel has come on board to host a new series on the podcast called "Life Off Set".
