"Where is Thy faithfulness?" Something so grim had occurred in Israel that the Psalmist was led to question God’s faithfulness to His covenant with the king. In fact, the Psalmist states in no uncertain terms that God is responsible for the demise of both king and country. Questioning God’s faithfulness is not something the believer wants to readily admit, but most of us have experienced the feeling of abandonment and isolation when everything seems to go wrong. Psalm 89 begins by praising the faithfulness of our God, and one of the great promises of His faithfulness is that David’s line would be established through all generations. In fact, God goes so far as to say that He has made a covenant with His chosen one, and a covenant cannot be broken by a covenant-keeping God. There’s an intense feeling of spiritual anguish when the believer feels abandoned by God. Psalm 88 reflects that anguish in what has been called the darkest and gloomiest of Psalms and a psalm filled with one wail of sorrow from beginning to end. But even this darkest of Psalms has a purpose. It reminds us that, despite our faith, our lives are sometimes filled with trouble and—often—there seems to be no end in sight. The Apostle Paul called himself “the servant of Christ”, but in his day there really were no servants, only slaves. The Greek word Paul used is better translated “under rower”, the slave who occupied the lowest position in the galley of a ship powered by the sweat of men. Join Dr. James Boice next time on The Bible Study Hour as he reflects on Paul’s self-evaluation as a minister of Christ. A day is coming when the nations of the world will be brought together--not by force or human effort, but by the power of God--to worship Him, and to live in harmony with one another. Next time on The Bible Study Hour with Dr. James Boice, we’ll be studying Psalm 87. Join Dr. Boice as he paints a picture of the day when all nations will worship the Lord on Mt. Zion, the city of our great God. To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/81/29?v=20251111
It’s been said that in the Christian life there is nothing more important than mercy. Yet we understand so little about it. David was a man who realized his need. He was a great man of God but he was also a great sinner who depended on the mercy of the Lord in both his personal life and his role as king. John Wesley once asked, “Where is the joy I knew when I first saw the Lord?” Maybe you’ve asked the same question. In this message, Dr. James Boice will be looking at Psalm 85 where the psalmist asks, “Will you not revive us again?” To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/81/29?v=20251111
They were the caretakers of the House of God. They were the Sons of Korah, gatekeepers of the Temple, and they were blessed by their duties. But did the real blessing come from the Temple or from the God who inhabited it? To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/81/29?v=20251111
Christians are not to seek revenge. But can we pray for revenge if the enemy is the enemy of God? In this message, Dr. James Boice will be studying Psalm 83, showing us that even in revenge there can be a divine purpose if judgement is left in the hands of the Lord. While the unity of believers is stressed throughout the New Testament, division has often stymied the growth of the church and the fellowship of Christians, and the beginning verses of I Corinthians chapter three tell us of two areas that fueled those divisions. Join Dr. James Boice next time on The Bible Study Hour as he looks at carnal Christianity and whether some believers are “more saved” than others. Human government is part of God’s plan. He established the leaders of Israel, and they were to exercise their authority in His name. But like most human governments, those leaders soon forgot Whom it was that granted them power. To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/81/29?v=20251111
The world sometimes points to God’s people as hypocrites because we say one thing but do another, and sometimes that observation is correct. The Israelites were no different. While their worship may have seemed happy and joyful, the Lord knew their hearts…and while they claimed to love Him, they would not “listen and obey.” To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/81/29?v=20251111
"Make your face to shine upon us, that we may be saved." God’s people cry out to Him again. But while they worship Him with their mouths, their hearts have grown cold. God has a shepherd’s heart but a sovereign’s might. Will He save His people? To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/81/29?v=20251111
Imagine the feeling of having lost everything: your home, your family, even your place of worship. As we study the response of the Israelites to the destruction of all they hold dear, we might wonder how we would cope when our world crumbles and there’s no hope on the horizon. The Gospel, itself, hangs on an historical fact—that Jesus died on the cross of Calvary. The history of the Bible helps us to understand who God is—not a god of our imaginations but a God who invades history to accomplish His purposes. The writers of Scripture laid out that history to remind God’s people that certain actions must not be repeated.
