Why Do People Go to Church? (Ephesians 1: 3-14) Part 2.

Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is an in-depth, daily study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. This is part two of a single, longer recording and message based on this one passage of scripture. Full transcript for both episodes is with part 1.Episode Notes: Why Do People Go to Church? (Ephesians 1: 3-14)Why do people go to church? It’s a question we rarely ask out loud, but it sits quietly beneath the surface of every church on every Sunday morning. Some people go because they always have, and their parents went. Some go because they feel they ought to. Some go because they’re lonely and some go because they’re hurting. Some go because they’re hungry, not for food, but for meaning, for hope, for God.…. And some — if we’re honest — aren’t entirely sure why they go at all.But Paul, in Ephesians 1:3–14, gives us an answer that is far deeper, far richer, far more beautiful than any of those surface‑level reasons. He tells us that the reason we gather, the reason we worship, the reason we belong to a church at all… is because God has done something astonishing for us in Christ.Support the showThis podcast is not associated with the Bible Project YouTube channel or any other associated podcasts that use the name 'Bible Project'. Blessing God by Blessing Each Other. (Eph 1: 3)

Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is an in-depth, daily study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes: Blessing God by Blessing Each Other. (Eph 1: 3)We now arrive at one of the most breathtaking transitions in all of Paul’s writings. After the greeting — those gentle words of grace and peace — Paul takes a deep breath, lifts his eyes, and launches into a sentence so long, so rich, so overflowing with praise that in the original Greek it runs for 202 uninterrupted words. And it all begins with this:We are…. “In Christ.”This is not a metaphor. Nor is it a poetic flourish or some sort of a spiritual slogan…. This is about the change of our humanity…..Support the showThis podcast is not associated with the Bible Project YouTube channel or any other associated podcasts that use the name 'Bible Project'. And truly, this is a good place to start because Paul begins not with instruction, not with correction, not with urgency, but with blessing. He begins with grace. He begins with peace. He begins with identity, and that’s where we begin too….Support the showThis podcast is not associated with the Bible Project YouTube channel or any other associated podcasts that use the name 'Bible Project'. Stepping Into Ephesus. Ephesians, Introduction and Overview.

Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is an in-depth, daily study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes:  Stepping Into Ephesus. Ephesians, Introduction and Overview.A messenger has arrived from far away. He carries a letter. Not just any letter, a letter from a man they have heard about but never met. A man whose reputation has travelled farther than he ever could. A man who has been beaten, shipwrecked, imprisoned, and yet somehow is still shaping the world. The letter is opened. And the room falls silent. This is the moment the church in Ephesus first heard the words we now call Ephesians. A letter that would outlive empires, reshape theology, and call believers across centuries to live in the light of their calling. And today, we begin that journey together through that letter.Support the showThis podcast is not associated with the Bible Project YouTube channel or any other associated podcasts that use the name 'Bible Project'. Between the season Bonus Episode. A History of The Christian Church (Part 37) Bernard of Clairvaux.

Send us Fan MailA Taster Episode from my "History of The Christian Church Podcast".  2000 years of Christian thought told through the ideas of its greatest thinkers....This is my latest episode: No 37. Episode,  Season 3 - The Medieval Church - Episode 9.Welcome:What happens when the church becomes too clever? What happens when faith is no longer something to be lived, but something to be analysed? That is the world we stepped into with Peter Abelard in our last episode. But not everyone welcomed that change, because, amid that rising tide of intellectual confidence, another voice began to speak. His name was Bernard of Clairvaux. And these two worldviews would collide. The world of the philosopher…. and the world of the monk. Their conflict would not just shape their own lives, but it would shape the direction of medieval theology itself. And this still matters because, at its core, this is not just a story about the twelfth century. It is a story about every generation of the church. So, join me in today’s episode…. As we step into the life, the passion, and the fierce convictions of Bernard of Clairvaux. The man who stood against the rising tide of intellectualism and called the church back to what, well, maybe to the heart of the Christian faith. For a complete list of sources and references used in the production of this episode, please visit my FREE Patreon page.Support the showThis podcast is not associated with the Bible Project YouTube channel or any other associated podcasts that use the name 'Bible Project'. Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is an in-depth, daily study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes: Choices Have Consequences. (2 Kings 23:31-25:30)Choices have consequences. Good choices bring good consequences. Bad choices bring bad consequences, and the Bible is full of stories that illustrate both. Some made wise choices, some made foolish choices, and the consequences were very different. The consequences are not always the same. We’ve been walking through the book of 2 Kings, the book in the Bible that traces the slow, tragic decline of the nation of Israel, and especially the southern kingdom of Judah.... And now we’ve reached the end. From the end of chapter 23 through chapters 24 and 25, we watch the final unravelling of the nation, king after king, bad choice after bad choice, and consequence after consequence. Today’s lengthy closing passage will show us something important: Individuals can make wrong choices, and so can nations….And both experience consequences….Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. (2 Kings 23: 1-30)Now we know that physical growth just… happens. Feed a child, give it time, and they grow. But spiritual growth? That doesn’t “just happen.” It requires something. It involves choices, and it demands a response. And as we’ve been walking through the book of 2 Kings, we’ve now come to a chapter that beautifully illustrates the essential elements of spiritual growth — the very ingredients of revival. It shows us how revival begins, and it shows us how it begins with you….Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. Avoiding God’s Discipline. (2 King 22: 1-20)

Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is an in-depth, daily study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes: Avoiding God’s Discipline. (Joshua 22: 1-20)God wants you to be His child. Not just in the sense of being forgiven, though that’s where it begins, but in the sense of being a child who walks with Him, listens to Him, and enjoys His blessing. But once you become His child, God wants you to be an obedient child, just like any good parent wants their child to obey. And for that, He’s given us an instruction manual…. It’s called the Bible. But what happens when you step out of line? Well… what happens with any child? God, like a good Father, disciplines us.  In the bible, God’s people, Israel, had a long record of discipline; the Old Testament is full of this pattern. God redeemed Israel out of Egypt. He gave them the land, He blessed them abundantly, and He made them His people…. And then He gave them a long book — Deuteronomy — that effectively said: “If you obey Me, I will bless you.”“If you disobey Me, there will be consequences.” But they didn’t listen. For hundreds of years, God warned them: And eventually, that’s exactly what happened…. That’s the story of 2 Kings. King after king after king…disobeying, drifting, rebelling…until finally God says, “Enough,”and the nation is carried into exile. But here’s the fascinating part: One of the very last kings didn’t get disciplined and that’s where our story begins today. Because if we can understand why he escaped discipline, we can learn how to avoid it in our own lives….Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. God’s Amazing Grace. (2 Kings 21: 1-26)

Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is an in-depth, daily study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes:  God’s Amazing Grace. (2 Kings 21: 1-26)Several days ago, we looked at a king named Ahaz and asked the question: “How low can one go?” Up to that point in 2 Kings, Ahaz was the worst king Israel had ever had. He made alliances instead of trusting the Lord. He changed the worship. He embraced idolatry. And in the most horrifying moment of his life, he sacrificed his own infant son in the fire. How low can you go? Well… keep reading because the Bible introduces us to another king, a king who somehow manages to go even lower. His name is Manasseh, and what he does is so dark, so hideous, so spiritually twisted, that you almost want to say, “Viewer discretion advised.” You’ll see it by the end of the chapter. It’s a truth about the human condition. A truth about sin and a truth about grace, and I genuinely believe most Christians underestimate it. So, let’s walk through the passage.Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. Responding to God’s Amazing Grace. (2 Kings 20: 1-21)

Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is an in-depth, daily study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes: Responding to God’s Amazing Grace. (2 Kings 20: 1-21)God’s grace is amazing; we even sing about it. But maybe we say that so often that sometimes we forget just how astonishing it really is. The Bible says: “For by grace are you saved through faith… it is the gift of God, not of works.” But consider the backdrop of that verse. What were we really like before we came to Christ?  But in some passages, it describes us as being in enmity with God — not neutral, not mildly indifferent, but opposed to Him. And yet, in that condition, God loved us. And God demonstrated His love by sending His Son to die for our sins so that we could receive eternal life as a gift. That is amazing grace. But that’s only the beginning. God’s grace doesn’t just save us. Grace saves us.Grace strengthens us.Grace sustains us.Exceedingly.Abundantly.Above all, we could ask or even imagine. So, if God pours out grace like that, then how should we respond? There are many possible biblical answers to that question.  But since we’re walking through 2 Kings, chapter by chapter, we’ve now arrived at a moment in Hezekiah’s life where God poured out extraordinary grace on him, and then Scripture shows us exactly how he responded.  And tucked inside this story is something every one of us needs to hear. Something about our hearts right now, not just Hezekiah’s…..Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. (2 Kings 19: 1-37)Life has a way of surprising us. Most days are ordinary enough, predictable, manageable, familiar. But every so often, life throws us a curveball. A phone call.A diagnosis.A financial blow.A relationship crisis.A sudden loss. And when those moments come, and they will, the question is simple…. How do you handle a crisis?Today, we’re going to look at a king who faced a crisis so overwhelming that the entire city of Jerusalem hung in the balance. When Faith Stands Tall. (2 Kings 18 1:-37)

Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is an in-depth, daily study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes:  When Faith Stands Tall. (2 Kings 18 1:-37)Life is full of challenges. But for the believer, there is one challenge that towers above all the rest. A challenge that shapes everything else in your spiritual life. Trusting the Lord…. In all circumstances. And today, we meet a man who faced that challenge head‑on and stood tall. His name is Hezekiah.Hezekiah is mentioned not only in 2 Kings 18, but he is also covered in three chapters of 2 Chronicles, 29–32, and in Isaiah, chapters 36–39. In fact, more biblical material is devoted to Hezekiah than to any king other than David and Solomon. He is one of the most significant kings in Israel’s history and one of the most remarkable examples of faith in the entire Old Testament. Over the next several episodes, we’re going to walk through his story one chapter at a time for three chapters. In doing that, we will discover what made Hezekiah stand tall when others fell…. Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. The Counterfeit Version of Real Religion. (2 Kings 17: 1-41)

Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is an in-depth, daily study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes: The Counterfeit Version of Real Religion. (2 Kings 17: 1-41)We use the word religion all the time; we say someone is “religious.”When we talk about “world religions", we usually refer to beliefs, rituals, and practices connected to a deity. Usually, when we use the word, we’re thinking of the major systems of belief: Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam But interestingly, the Bible doesn’t use the word religion very often. The word, when translated in this way, appears only three or four times in the New Testament, and when it does appear, it’s used in two very different ways: Sometimes negatively describes an empty, external ritual.  Sometimes, positively, describing what James calls “pure and undefiled religion.” And if Scripture speaks of pure religion, then by implication, there must also be impure religion. Religion that looks spiritual… sounds spiritual… feels spiritual… but is actually defiled. So, what does impure religion look like and how does it affect us today? There is a story in the Old Testament that helps answer those questions with remarkable clarity and it’s found in 2 Kings 17, I would say one of the most important chapters in the entire book, and a chapter that helps explain events in the New Testament, especially in the Gospel of John. So, let’s walk through it together…..Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. (2 Kings 17: 1-20)Now and then, we hear stories of people who have committed truly shocking sins, the kind that make you pause and ask: “How low can a person go?”When we ask it honestly, Scripture gives us insight, not just into the human heart, but into the grace of God, the consequences of sin, and the dangers of drifting. And today, as we continue our journey through the book of 2 Kings, we come to a king who sinks lower than any king before him.  His story is disturbing. It’s dark. It’s tragic…. But it’s also instructive. So, here’s what we’re going to do today. First, we’ll walk through 2 Kings 16 and see just how far this king fell. Then, we’ll step into the New Testament and ask what this means for us today. Two passages, but one very important lesson. Let’s begin….Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. When Christians Don’t Really Believe. (2 Kings 13: 1-25)

Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is an in-depth, daily study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes:  When Christians Don’t Really Believe. (2 Kings 13: 1-25)There’s a strange and unsettling reality in the Christian life that we don’t talk about very often. It’s this: Christians don’t always believe. Oh, we believe in God, that’s not the issue. We believe the gospel, we believe the Bible, and we even believe the creeds sometimes. But when life presses in, when circumstances tighten, when fear rises, or disappointment lingers… sometimes Christians stop believing in God Himself. We stop believing His promises, we stop believing we have His presence. We stop believing in His power, and we stop believing in His goodness and the result is not atheism; it’s something far more subtle. It is a life lived as if God were small, distant, or disinterested. That’s the story of 2 Kings 13. It’s a chapter about spiritual inconsistency, about half‑hearted obedience, and about people who know better… but don’t live better. And if we’re honest, it’s a chapter about us. 2 Kings 13 offers us a reflection on the Christian life that sometimes is not very flattering. But it’s also a chapter filled with astonishing grace because even when God’s people don’t believe, God remains faithful.Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. And if the line of David is wiped out, the Messiah cannot come. This is one of the most dramatic “knife‑edge” moments in the Old Testament — and yet the story is not ultimately about danger, it’s about God’s faithfulness, even when everything looks like it’s about to collapse.Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. God's Anointing for Christian Believers. (2 Kings 9: 1-37)

Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is an in-depth, daily study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes: God's Anointing for Christian Believers. (2 Kings 9: 1-37)We don’t use the word very often anymore, but it’s a deeply biblical word — anointing. Some preachers use it so loosely that you almost raise an eyebrow. Others hardly mention it at all. But Scripture is clear: God anoints people. In the Old Testament, prophets were anointed, priests were anointed, and Kings were anointed. And in the New Testament, John tells us plainly in 1 John 2 that believers, all genuine Christian believers, are anointed as well. So, the question becomes: What does it mean to be anointed?  And what does that look like for us today? To answer that, we’re going to look at one of the clearest pictures of anointing in the Old Testament. The moment when God anointed a man named Jehu. His story gives us a window into what anointing meant then, and what it means for us now.Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. God Has a Message for You. (2 Kings 8: 1-15)

Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is an in-depth, daily study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes: God Has a Message for You. (2 Kings 8: 1-15)If you’re a follower of Jesus, here’s something you need to know right at the start of this episode: God has a message for you.  Not just one, but many, and He delivers them in all kinds of ways. The primary ways, of course, are through the texts of the bible. God wrote a book, and He filled that book with stories, stories about real people, in real places, facing real situations. And although those stories were written to them, they were written for us.   Paul says exactly that in Romans 15:4:  “Whatever things were written before were written for our learning…” In other words, when you read the Old Testament, you’re looking at someone else’s story — but it’s meant to slow you down and prompt you to take note. Pay attention to both the narrative and the prophetic and consider how it fits with the world you see around you today. And today, in 2 Kings 8, we’re going to look at three short stories, three moments where God had a message for three different people. But I strongly believe that the message He gave them is a message He wants to give you… So, let's see what God wants us to take on board today….Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. The Sin of Remaining Silent. (2 Kings 6:23-7:19)

Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is an in-depth, daily study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes:  The Sin of Remaining Silent. (2 Kings 6:23-7:19)As believers, we are usually very aware of the sins we commit when we do something wrong. We know when we’ve spoken harshly, acted selfishly, crossed a line, or broken a command. Those are what some theologians call sins of commission. But we are often far less aware of the sins we commit by not doing something, the things we leave undone, the good we withhold, the truth we never speak, the help we never offer. Those are sometimes called sins of omission, and believe me, Scripture has a great deal to say about them. As we continue our journey through 2 Kings, we come to a passage where both kinds of sin appear side by side. Some people in this story commit sins by what they do, and they do some terrible things. But tucked right in the middle is a group of people who sin by what they fail to do.  So, let’s walk through this passage together and see what it teaches us, not only about what we shouldn’t do, but about what we must do….Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. So, the question is not whether you’re a servant. The question is: What makes someone a good servant of the Lord? There’s a passage in the Old Testament that gives us a vivid illustration of what true servanthood looks like. And what makes this passage especially interesting is that it contains several servants, each contributing something different to the picture it paints. So, join me in 2 Kings chapter 5, one of the most familiar stories in the Old Testament — the healing of Naaman.Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. Examples of God's Provision. (2 Kind 4: 1-44) Part 1.

Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is a daily, in-depth study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes:  Examples of God's Provision. (2 Kind 4: 1-44) Part 1.One of the great themes of Scripture is that God provides for His children. From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible tells us that God sees, God knows, and God supplies. But what does that actually look like? What kinds of needs does He meet? And how does He meet them?  The Old Testament is full of examples, and the New Testament builds on those promises. But in 2 Kings 4, we’re given three very specific, very practical stories of God stepping into real human need. And each one shows us something about how God provides for us today…Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. Are Others Blessed Because of You? (2 Kings 3: 1-27)

Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is a daily, in-depth study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes:  Are others Blessed Because of You?  (2 Kings 3: 1-27) Welcome back, friends. Today, we’re stepping into one of the most surprising stories in the life of Elisha, a moment when God pours out blessings on people who didn’t deserve it, simply because one man humbled himself before the Lord.  It’s a story that asks a searching question of every believer: Is it possible that God sometimes blesses people because of us? The bible gives us some examples of exactly that, and one of the clearest is found right here today in 2 Kings 3. This is a fascinating story because of that exact twist, because here we see God blessing people who don’t deserve it, simply because of someone who does deserve that blessing. So, join me in 2 Kings chapter 3….Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. Well, that’s exactly what I want us to talk about today. There’s a fascinating story in 2 Kings 2 about a man who knew how to bless others—how to minister to people—and from that story, we can glean some very practical insights as to how to do that in our own lives....Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. If 1 Kings is the book of decline, 2 Kings is the book of collapse. If 1 Kings shows the cracks forming in the kingdom, 2 Kings shows the walls finally giving way. This is not a cheerful book, but it is a necessary one, and it is profoundly relevant for our times.Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. Follow your Father. (1 Kings 22; 41-53)

Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is a daily, in-depth study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes: Follow your Father. (1 Kings 22; 41-53)According to the bible, children are called to obey and honour their parents. This is a clear instruction that forms the foundation of the parent-child relationship in early life. But the question remains: should you always follow your parents? Some may immediately agree, while others may hesitate or question this idea. The answer depends on who the parent is and in what area you are considering following them. This distinction is important, and as we progress through the book of 1 Kings, we encounter the final paragraph of the last chapter of 1 Kings in which are two stories are presented—each about a different king. What is most striking is that one king followed his father, and that proved to be beneficial, while another king followed his father and that had negative consequences. Now the topic itself is complex. Some do not have fathers, and this presents its own questions and challenges.  Ultimately, there are two primary answers to this question, with several nuances in between….Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. Beware of False Preachers. (1 Kings 22: 1-40)

Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is a daily, in-depth study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes:  Beware of False Preachers. (1 Kings 22: 1-40)If you’re a believer in Jesus Christ and you’re serious about spiritual growth, then I assume you’re serious about Scripture. And if you’re serious about Scripture, you probably do more than listen to an occasional sermon on Sunday. Maybe you read Christian books and listen to Christian podcasts. Maybe you watch Christian television, and maybe you scroll through Christian content online. Now, there’s a place for all of that because there’s value in hearing different voices. But be careful. Listening to some Christian speakers and influencers these days can be risky to your spiritual health. I know—that sounds like a strange, but it’s a biblical warning because the bible repeatedly cautions God’s people about what they call false prophets, false teachers, with false messages. So today, I want to take you to a passage in the Old Testament that illustrates this danger vividly. And after we walk through the story, I want to show you some New Testament passages also that warn us about the same thing.Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is a daily, in-depth, encouraging, and uplifting study through the entire Bible,  chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes:  When Justice and Mercy Collide. (1 Kings 21: 1-29)According to Scripture, two of the greatest virtues God calls us to practice are justice and mercy. Both are essential, and both reflect the character of God.  However, sometimes life places us in situations where those two virtues seem to pull in opposite directions.  Do I show justice here… Or do I show mercy?  Which one is right in that moment?  And that’s why we need a third virtue, and the bible calls that one, wisdom.  Wisdom is what helps us discern when to apply justice, when to extend mercy, and how to hold both together in the same situation.  Interestingly, 1 Kings 21 tells a story in which justice and mercy are both at play, and it is one of the most quoted episodes in the life of King Ahab.  Leadership Lessons From The Great BooksUnderstanding great literature is better than trying to read and understand (yet)...Listen on: Apple Podcasts   SpotifySupport the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. (1 Kings 20: 1-43)The Bible has shaped Western civilization more than any other book in history. Our ethics, our laws, our sense of justice—so much of it flows straight out of Scripture. But the Bible hasn’t just shaped our laws, it has also shaped our language. When the Bible was translated into English first by Tyndale and then with the KJV, which draws heavily on Tyndale's translation, it became the most widely read book in the English‑speaking world; its idioms, its expressions, and its imagery seeped into everyday speech. So much so that we use biblical phrases all the time without even realizing it.Expressions like “the writing is on the wall.”   Or “the apple of his eye.”  Or “a drop in the bucket.”   Or how about, “by the skin of your teeth.”  There are dozens of these, but today I want to look at just one of them. But instead of giving it to you upfront, I’m going to tell you the story behind it—and you see if you can work out the idiom by the time we get to the end. And the story behind it is found in 1 Kings chapter 20….Leadership Lessons From The Great BooksUnderstanding great literature is better than trying to read and understand (yet)...Listen on: Apple Podcasts   SpotifySupport the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. (1 Kings 17: 1-24)What does it take for a person to prepare for ministry? Most people immediately think, “Well, you’ve got to go to bible college or university to do that.” And if you’re talking about becoming a pastor, perhaps that’s an advantage, although plenty of people have served the Lord faithfully without ever setting foot in a university classroom. But that’s not what I mean by ministry. According to Ephesians 4, if you have trusted Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins—if you know that issue is settled and heaven is your home—then you are already in the ministry. Most people sitting in a pew don’t think of themselves that way, but biblically, every believer is a minister. So how then does God prepare His people to serve Him?  There are many answers to that question, but there is one fascinating passage in the Old Testament that gives us a living, breathing example of how God shapes one man for ministry, and that man was called Elijah….Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. Because He doesn’t just give abstract principles, he gives illustrations, he uses stories, and he shows us the lives of ordinary people.Last time, in chapter 15, God evaluated several kings by the standard of one man—David. But today, as we move into the second half of chapter 15 and on into chapter 16, something shifts. God still uses a human example—but this time, it’s not David, it’s Jeroboam, and that tells you something right away: If David is God’s standard of faithfulness, now Jeroboam will become God’s standard of failure because his influence becomes the yardstick by which the next generation—and the next, and the next, right down tio this day, is judged….Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. That’s not a popular idea today, but it is a biblical one.  But if that is so, then what standard does God use when He judges? What does that look like on a human level? Suppose God chose a person—a human being, not Himself, not His Son—and said: “This is the standard, this is the life by which I will measure others.” In the first 24 verses of 1 Kings 15, God does this. A Tale of Two Kings (1 Kings 14 1-31)

Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is a daily, in-depth, encouraging, and uplifting study through the entire Bible,  chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Today's Episode: A Tale of Two Kings (1 Kings 14 1-31)Charles Dickens once wrote one of the great classics of English literature, A Tale of Two Cities. The cities in Charles Dickens' novel were London and Paris. I’d like to borrow that title—but with a slight twist, because today’s passage could easily be called: "A Tale of Two Kings". Because in 1 Kings 14, we meet the first two rulers of the newly divided kingdom of Israel—one in the north, one in the south. And their stories are not just historical curiosities. They are warnings. When God Interrupts False Religion. (1 Kings 13: 1-34)

Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is a daily, in-depth, encouraging, and uplifting study through the entire Bible,  chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Today's Episode: When God Interrupts False Religion. (1 Kings 13: 1-34)Today, we step into one of the strangest, most dramatic, and most sobering chapters in the entire book of 1 Kings. And if you’ve been following the story with us, you know exactly why this chapter matters. Rehoboam has made foolish decisions.  Jeroboam has made even worse ones. The kingdom is divided, the people are confused, and false worship is spreading like wildfire. So, what does God do when His people drift into deception? How to Make Wrong Decisions. (1 Kings 12: 1-33)

Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is a daily, in-depth, encouraging, and uplifting study through the entire Bible,  chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Today's Episode: How to Make Wrong Decisions. (1 Kings 12: 1-33)Apparently, there’s some value in studying wrong decisions—because Scripture gives us some spectacular examples. And today we come to one of the clearest, almost classic cases in the entire Bible. So, our topic today is simple: How to make wrong decisions, but of course, before we’re done, I’ll give you three words that will tell you how to make right decisions. But first, we need to watch a man make a disastrous one.Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E.
