I began thinking about what I would do working with someone if I only had one day. This “thought exercise” helped me think about the practices I teach that are most impactful, the ones that are simplest, and the ones that can make an immediate improvement in life and leadership. As I began putting the day together in my head, I realized I already have a one-day training that is very close to what I would do if I had you for a day, so I’ve made some changes to that training and borrowed some of the resources to come up with a one-day training for you. What I mean by that is that every activity I will take you through has a handout that goes with it. My hope is that you will be inspired by this podcast and one of two things will happen: you will grab the One Day guide and work through it on your own or, even better, with your team, or you’ll invite me to come do this training for you (and your team). This is sector agnostic – if you ever lead change, these five things are critical.It can’t be my vision; it needs to be our vision. I think this is the most common mistake people (including me) make. Sometime we can trust too much in our own leadership.Pilot with a willing group. One of the simplest mistakes to avoid is to force change. When implementing change, work with the willing by doing a pilot. Just because a thing worked somewhere else doesn’t mean it will work at your organization, so find the people who most want the change and enlist them in a pilot.

Thankfully Thinking with Frederick Teaser:I’m planning on this episode being a little light. Honestly, I’m not sure how many people will tune in given we are dropping in a week where many of us are thinking more about dinner than data. Mara and I discussed some self-care strategies a couple weeks ago in episode 271. One thing we did not talk about is how to unplug from the day so your time away form work is… well, time away from work. We are going to get technical and discuss specific strategies and habits you can adopt to increase the likelihood that you can leave your work behind. There are a couple caveats to this: For many of you, there are job responsibilities you have in the evening (subs and buses) – and we will look at how to work from home in the healthiest way possible next week. The other caveat is these techniques are helpful but they are not a panacea.
