The show is built from SMTI ministry recordings, so it feels more like sitting in a training seminar than a casual chat, with extended lectures often followed by Q&A. It is best for pastors, biblical counsellors, ministry leaders, and Christians who want theological counsel that is direct, practical, and Scripture-centered.

EPISODE 22 - Apples of Gold in Settings of Silver - by Dr Keith Palmer

John Newton was an eighteenth-century Anglican minister who is best known as the writer of the hymn ‘Amazing Grace’. Yet he was also the leading pastoral counsellor of his generation, maintaining a prolific letter-writing ministry of pastoral care to dozens of people from all walks of life who wrote seeking his advice. But why was Newton’s counsel so popular? Dr Palmer will seek to answer this question by exploring Newton’s unique theology of suffering, which formed an essential structure that informed and shaped his model of soul care. Influenced by this doctrine, Newton’s manner and methodology of pastoral care are explored, highlighting key principles of his strategy as he sought to care for others.Teaching by Dr Keith PalmerFor more information on SMTI, please click here: https://smti.co.za/ For more information on the Biblical Counsellors Association of Africa (BCAA, formerly ACBC Africa), please click here: https://bcaa.co.za/For more information on Lynnwood Baptist Church, please click here: https://lynnwoodbaptistchurch.co.za/

EPISODE 21 - Facing Suffering - Part 1 by Dr Sean Perron

Suffering is deeply personal yet transformed through Christ’s own personal suffering, and endured through honest communion with God as we hope in Jesus. In every kind of suffering—even the kind that terrifies us—God is sovereign, wise, and good, and therefore we can submit to His loving will. God uses suffering to sanctify us and to teach us how we can overcome our fears through biblical practices. Dr Perron will help us learn how to apply these biblical truths both in our own lives and the people we are counselling.Teaching by Dr Sean PerronFor more information on SMTI, please click here: https://smti.co.za/ For more information on the Biblical Counsellors Association of Africa (BCAA, formerly ACBC Africa), please click here: https://bcaa.co.za/For more information on Lynnwood Baptist Church, please click here: https://lynnwoodbaptistchurch.co.za/

EPISODE 18 - The Theology of Psychology - Part 2 by Dr Ed Wilde

Scripture makes the point that we are body and soul, not body, soul, and spirit. Dr Wilde will help us to understand that psychology itself is a theological study. When we speak about psychology, we are speaking about our thoughts, affections, and the causes of our actions — but that is also our “spiritual” life. Much of what we describe as “psychology” is, in fact, our “spiritual” life. Spiritual does not mean only what we think about God or prayer. Our spiritual life is how we treat one another, how we go to work, or what we eat (1 Cor. 10:31). If we think of “psychology” as something neutral and “scientific,” that in itself is a theological position.Teaching by Dr Ed WildeFor more information on SMTI, please click here: https://smti.co.za/ For more information on the Biblical Counsellors Association of Africa (BCAA, formerly ACBC Africa), please click here: https://bcaa.co.za/For more information on Lynnwood Baptist Church, please click here: https://lynnwoodbaptistchurch.co.za/

Do you struggle with knowing who you are? Often, self-perception, even as Christians, is fragmented or incomplete—people struggle to grasp the richly faceted identity they’ve been given in Christ. When your evaluation of yourself, your sin, and your circumstances are misaligned with God’s view, you don’t live with the comfort and motivation Christ offers. Scripture teaches that we are saints in good standing before God, yet we are at the same time sinners who must battle with our desires and sufferers who undergo hardship. Pastor Tautges will help you understand how grasping this threefold biblical reality centres your thoughts and affections on the Saviour and prepares you to stay on God’s good path as you live in a broken world.Teaching by Pastor Paul TautgesFor more information on SMTI, please click here: https://smti.co.za/ For more information on the Biblical Counsellors Association of Africa (BCAA, formerly ACBC Africa), please click here: https://bcaa.co.za/For more information on Lynnwood Baptist Church, please click here: https://lynnwoodbaptistchurch.co.za/

EPISODE 9 - Godly Leadership in a Chaotic World - Part 3 by Dr Jerry Wragg

Galatians 5 tells us that the deeds of the flesh are unmistakable, including enmities, strife, disputes, dissensions and factions. When inevitable conflict arises in the workplace, our homes or church, our response should not be the same as the world. Christians should never make ourselves enemies of others. But even if we don't resort to hatred and enmity, we can be tempted to resolve our issues by less-than-biblical means. We can try to manipulate, deceive or exaggerate to get our way. How does a redemptive leader bring peacemaking to his role? The biblical resolution to conflict in an evil world is the peace we have with Christ. We're called to step up to conflict and engage it in such a way that Christ becomes honoured through the struggle. James 3:18 says, "Righteous fruit is sown in peace." EPISODE 3 - Instructing a Childs Heart - Dr Tedd Tripp - Part 2

Part 2Children interpret their experience from a worldview that seeks to answer their fundamental questions: Who am I? What do I exist for? Where can I find joy? We need to provide our children with a consistent, persuasive, biblical framework for understanding the world God has made and their place in it. Instructing a Child's Heart is essential to Shepherding a Child's Heart. The instruction that you provide for them not only informs their mind; it is directed to persuade their hearts of the wisdom and truthfulness of God's ways. Impress truth on the hearts of your children, not to control or manage them, but to point them to the greatest joy and happiness that they can experience - delighting in God and the goodness of his ways.Teaching by: Dr Tedd TrippIf you would like to join the next Biblical Counseling Conversations session at the end of this month, please email [email protected] more information on SMTI, please click here: https://smti.co.za/ For more information on the Biblical Counsellors Association of Africa (BCAA, formerly ACBC Africa), please click here: https://bcaa.co.za/For more information on Lynnwood Baptist Church, please click here: https://lynnwoodbaptistchurch.co.za/

EPISODE 2 - Living Single - Beth de Swardt - Part 2

Part 2If there is any topic that a person would choose to be experienced in, very few would choose the area of singleness. Many, if not the majority of us, expect to finish our university lives with singleness far in the rearview mirror and will question God’s goodness if it is still our reality in our mid-30s. And yet, this is the case for many in our churches.Rightly, churches exalt marriage as an excellent God-given gift, but the lack of consideration for singleness makes life difficult for those whom God has not given the gift of a spouse. Too often, churches communicate singleness as a second-best choice for individuals in the body of Christ, leaving singles limited to the youth ministry or without ministry opportunities at all.A great deal of the literature and programs for singles are designed around helping them to cope and seem to reflect an underlying assumption that singleness is not quite normal and certainly not desirable.Singles life often has a way of not turning out as we think or dream - Scripture says that God’s ways aren’t our ways - so we have to get to the point where we can say that this is where God has me and this is God’s best - God hasn’t made a mistake - I can serve God as he has me for his glory. Teaching by: Beth de SwardtFor more information on SMTI, please click here: https://smti.co.za/ For more information on the Biblical Counsellors Association of Africa (BCAA, formerly ACBC Africa), please click here: https://bcaa.co.za/For more information on Lynnwood Baptist Church, please click here: https://lynnwoodbaptistchurch.co.za/

EPISODE 1 - Fallen Oaks - Dr Sybrand de Swardt - Part 2

PART 2The particular episode was recorded as part of the annual conference hosted at Lynnwood Baptist Church. If you would like more information on SMTI, Lynnwood Baptist Church or ACBC Africa, please click on the links in the show notes. While this talk was intended for ‘fallen oaks’ - men who have given up in the storms of life, the principles apply to all believers who experience hardship. God shows himself in the storms of life. God designs the storms of life to alleviate our ignorance regarding Christ, the Savior. God uses storms to deliver us from our unawareness regarding our own strength and the power of God.Dr Sybrandt De Swardt uses Mark 6:45-52 to point out that the disciples witnessed Jesus Christ, the creator, create bread and fish before their very eyes, and yet they did not gain any insight about Christ and the event. They remained unaware of the person and work of Christ. The disciples lacked understanding because their hearts were hardened. And therefore, ‘they had not gained any insight from the incident of the loaves.  In this section, we will see that Christ knows when we form the saviour into the likeness of our desires. We will see that Jesus will not live up to our expectations but will rather expose those longings that will draw us away from him.Jesus is the expert storm designer who uses them to rescue us from ourselves and put the focus back on his real person. He removes our focus on our misplaced loyalties and unbiblical expectations that are self-directed. The storms of life also shows how the Lord is after our hearts - our thinking, our wrong beliefs, our wrong desires and commitments. For more information on SMTI, please click here: https://smti.co.za/ For more information on the Biblical Counsellors Association of Africa (BCAA, formerly ACBC Africa), please click here: https://bcaa.co.za/For more information on Lynnwood Baptist Church, please click here: https://lynnwoodbaptistchurch.co.za/
