John Newton was an eighteenth-century Anglican minister who is best known as the writer of the hymn ‘Amazing Grace’. Yet he was also the leading pastoral counsellor of his generation, maintaining a prolific letter-writing ministry of pastoral care to dozens of people from all walks of life who wrote seeking his advice. But why was Newton’s counsel so popular? Dr Palmer will seek to answer this question by exploring Newton’s unique theology of suffering, which formed an essential structure that informed and shaped his model of soul care. Galatians 5 tells us that the deeds of the flesh are unmistakable, including enmities, strife, disputes, dissensions and factions. When inevitable conflict arises in the workplace, our homes or church, our response should not be the same as the world. Christians should never make ourselves enemies of others. But even if we don't resort to hatred and enmity, we can be tempted to resolve our issues by less-than-biblical means. We can try to manipulate, deceive or exaggerate to get our way. How does a redemptive leader bring peacemaking to his role?The biblical resolution to conflict in an evil world is the peace we have with Christ. We're called to step up to conflict and engage it in such a way that Christ becomes honoured through the struggle. James 3:18 says, "Righteous fruit is sown in peace." Many, if not the majority of us, expect to finish our university lives with singleness far in the rearview mirror and will question God’s goodness if it is still our reality in our mid-30s. And yet, this is the case for many in our churches.Rightly, churches exalt marriage as an excellent God-given gift, but the lack of consideration for singleness makes life difficult for those whom God has not given the gift of a spouse. Too often, churches communicate singleness as a second-best choice for individuals in the body of Christ, leaving singles limited to the youth ministry or without ministry opportunities at all.A great deal of the literature and programs for singles are designed around helping them to cope and seem to reflect an underlying assumption that singleness is not quite normal and certainly not desirable.Singles life often has a way of not turning out as we think or dream - Scripture says that God’s ways aren’t our ways - so we have to get to the point where we can say that this is where God has me and this is God’s best - God hasn’t made a mistake - I can serve God as he has me for his glory. God shows himself in the storms of life. God designs the storms of life to alleviate our ignorance regarding Christ, the Savior. God uses storms to deliver us from our unawareness regarding our own strength and the power of God.Dr Sybrandt De Swardt uses Mark 6:45-52 to point out that the disciples witnessed Jesus Christ, the creator, create bread and fish before their very eyes, and yet they did not gain any insight about Christ and the event. They remained unaware of the person and work of Christ. The disciples lacked understanding because their hearts were hardened. And therefore, ‘they had not gained any insight from the incident of the loaves. In this section, we will see that Christ knows when we form the saviour into the likeness of our desires. We will see that Jesus will not live up to our expectations but will rather expose those longings that will draw us away from him.Jesus is the expert storm designer who uses them to rescue us from ourselves and put the focus back on his real person. He removes our focus on our misplaced loyalties and unbiblical expectations that are self-directed. The storms of life also shows how the Lord is after our hearts - our thinking, our wrong beliefs, our wrong desires and commitments.
