Dr. Zina Jacque.  For over 20 years, Dr. Jacque worked in student affairs at institutions such as Northwestern, the University of Chicago, and the University of California, ultimately serving as Legislative Liaison to California’s 108 community colleges. After answering a call to the ministry, she earned an M.Div. (Summa Cum Laude) and Ph.D. in Theology from Boston University and went on to serve churches of all sizes, including Alfred Street Baptist Church.  Dr. Jacque has taught at the University of Chicago Divinity School and Boston University School of Theology and led mission-driven organizations, including the Boston TenPoint Coalition and the Pastoral Counseling Center at Trinity Church Boston. She currently serves as President and Board Chair of National Senior Communities, supporting over 28,000 residents and 17,000 staff. She is also co-founder of Courageous Conversations, a national dialogue series on belonging and inclusion.  A recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award from BU, Citizen of the Year in Barrington, and the Women of Distinction Award, Dr. Jacque is widely regarded as a voice of grace, wisdom, and hope.  She is one of a kind and she blessed us in this episode! It's time. We need to move different. We started the Pass The Mic podcast late in 2013, now, more than a decade later, the podcast as you’ve known it is coming to a close. This is not so much an ending, but an evolution. We still have several more episodes airing every other week, and after the final episode, Tyler will continue on with the podcast under a new name and with a new exciting focus and Jemar will make occasional appearances.   This episode is the announcement but not the ending. We’re planning a live, online finale episode later this year that you will all be invited to.  So stay subscribed and stay tuned.  Let’s address the natural question: WHY?!?  First, Jemar, Tyler, and Beau are all good.  There was no fallout, blowup, or disagreement that led to this decision.  We are glad to say that closing out Pass The Mic did not come as a result of interpersonal drama or conflict.  We have been engaged in this conversation for nearly a year. We reasoned together and concluded that this season of Pass The Mic has come to an end.  Then we gave each other the time and space to process both the bitter and the sweet that comes with such a significant transition. You’ll hear it on this week’s podcast episode, our genuine love and affection for one another has never been stronger.  Our deepest thanks for the labor, the wisdom, and the friendship of the whole team both seen and unseen who have made this show possible. So the shift is not about drama, it is about adapting.  This decision did not arise from a place of fear or scarcity but of health and growth. We’ve been saying for several episodes now that we have to move differently.  The culture is changing. Our political situation is in crisis. The church is being called to witness in a new way.  Tyler is doing life-shifting work as a pastor, and he has so many more ideas for other projects that he is now free to pursue. Beau is doing the vital work of storytelling employing imagination to spark conversation and joy. Check out his upcoming show at MidnightHTX.com. Ryan has a new day job, and is faithfully serving his church community. Jemar has been sensing the Holy Spirit moving him to do more online teaching and acting as a bridge between academic study and the church practice. Lamar played "Luther" and "All the Stars" with SZA before returning to "Not Like Us." Professional tennis player Serena Williams, who shares Lamar's hometown of Compton, made a cameo appearance as a dancer doing a crip walk during "Not Like Us", a reference to Williams performing a similar dance after her victory at the 2012 Summer Olympics, for which she faced criticism. Williams's appearance was also received as a diss towards Drake, with whom she was rumored to have dated several years earlier. The performance was capped off by "TV Off" with Mustard coming out as a special guest, finally with Lamar "turning the TV off" and the words "GAME OVER" being displayed through crowd wristband lights. Pointing to the God of the Scriptures. Cody is a native of Tulsa and a descendant of great-grandparents who were directly impacted by the infamous Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921, in Greenwood. At 15 years old, after spending years with his father incarcerated since his infancy, Jesus graciously saved Cody as he was walking home from a party. That changed his life forever. Cody earned a Bachelors in Pastoral Ministry and Theological Studies from Welch College. He is directly connected with the impact of mass incarceration on women and people of color in the United States. His true passion is teaching God’s word and listening to the vulnerable in our society. He believes that justice is the core element of our salvation, seeing that God seeks to make the world right and begins with those made in His image (Romans 3:21-26). Cody also serves as Director of Family Life at Koinonia Church, a diverse covenant community in Nashville, TN. This week Dr Jemar Tisby is joined by Dr Dwight Radcliff to discuss his experience as Academic Dean for the William E. Pannell Center for Black Church Studies and Assistant Professor of Mission, Theology, and Culture at Fuller Seminary Houston. Dwight A. Radcliff Jr. joined the faculty of Fuller as assistant professor of mission, theology, and culture in 2019, and was named at the same time as director of the William E. Pannell Center for Black Church Studies. In 2020, he was named as academic dean for the Pannell Center. Prior to coming to Fuller, Dr. Radcliff taught at Vanguard University, Azusa Pacific University, and the Southern California School of Ministry. While completing his MDiv in Fuller’s School of Theology, Radcliff was recognized with several awards and scholarships, including the prestigious Parish Pulpit Fellowship graduation prize and the Hooper/Keefe Preaching Award. He earned his PhD in Fuller’s School of Intercultural Studies; in that time he received both a Pannell Fellowship and a King Fellowship. He completed post-master’s studies at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas and the University of Oxford. His dissertation is entitled “The Message: A Hip Hop Hermeneutic as a Missiological Model,” and portions of his doctoral research have already been published in a peer-reviewed article in The Journal of Hip Hop Studies and presented in multiple professional, ministry, educational, and popular contexts. Radcliff lectures in seminaries, universities, and conferences on topics ranging from urban church planting, culture, theology, preaching, social justice, millennials, and evangelism. His teaching and preaching has taken him across the US and abroad to places including Brazil and London. He also previously served as a deputy and chaplain with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, during which time he received recognition and commendations from city, county, state, and federal officials. Radcliff has over 20 years experience in pastoral ministry, and currently serves as senior pastor of The Message Center in Gardena, California, where he leads with his wife, DeShun Jones-Radcliff, who serves as the church’s director of administration.
