The Criterion Collection just added the K-ON movie to their catalogue, cementing it as a classic anime film for the ages. It’s time again for the Kawaii-Fi Anime Awards!As we do each January, we’re looking back on the past year of anime! Each team member picks out their favourite shows across categories featuring genres, music and art – and we also touch on those they’d rather forget!We won’t be able to capture all the great shows from 2025, so sound off in the comments with your picks for each category!Our rules for award eligibility:- An anime must have finished airing in 2025. This means a broadcast run ending before December 31st, 2024 in Japan. This includes anime that began their run in 2024 and finished in 2025 (ie 2-cour series that run into the new year).- Anime which are ongoing from the previous year (eg Cat’s Eye, Tojima want’s to be a Kamen Rider etc) do not qualify for these awards, but are eligible for the 2026 awards once their broadcast run ends.- Anime films must have had a true international release (cinema or digital) in this calendar year to qualify. Angel’s Egg is a bit of an oddity – it has hardly any dialogue, the characters are unnamed, there are weird groups of ghostly fishermen, and – of course – a girl carrying an egg.Released in 1985, the film is an avante garde story set in a fantastical setting. Fujimoto Tatsuki is now fairly well known for his action blockbuster series Chainsaw Man, the very strange manga Fire Punch and his introspective short Look Back.But before any of these stories began, Fujimoto-san wrote several one-shot manga that he submitted to manga awards and contests between the ages of 17 and 26.These short stories were collected into two manga volumes in 2021 and were just released as an anime compilation series on Amazon Prime!Collecting a selection of his works from 2011 through to 2018 (Kyle apologises for getting the date wrong in the episode!), Fujimoto Tatsuki 17-26 shows how the manga-ka’s work evolved over time and gives us glimpses of the ideas that would go on to shape some of his future work!They’re also just great fun!
