Stephen Guerra·153 episodes

HistoryChurch historySolo narratorGuest episodesHistorical detours30-60 minBest from the beginning

This show will detail the biographies and interesting facts of the Papacy of Rome. It will start in the beginning, but will not go straight through. There will be many side tracks and detours along the way. We will investigate the backstreets of the Papacy where the tour normally doesn't go.

Why listen

History of the Papacy Podcast is a detailed, curious tour through the popes, early Christianity, church politics, heresies, councils, and the wider Roman world with host Stephen Guerra. It mixes chronological history with sidetrack episodes and guest conversations, so listeners get both a long historical arc and focused detours into figures, texts, and controversies. It is especially good for history fans who like church history treated as messy human history, not just doctrine or dates.

The Q Source with Garry Stevens

Episode 92: The Q Source with Garry Stevens Description: Today, I am joined once again by the indomitable Garry Stevens of the History in the Bible Podcast. In this episode, we tackle one of the most challenging aspects of the New Testament, the Q Source. Q is what might be called the “missing link” of the Gospels. It could very well be the source or even the document that ties many of the loose ends and questions raised in the typology of the New Testament. I’m very excited about this topic! REVISED Episode 90: The History of Italy with Marco Cappelli

Episode 90: The History of Italy with Marco Cappelli Description: I am really excited for today’s conversation with Marco Cappelli of the Storia d’Italia podcast. Marco’s podcast is a history of Italy, but in the Italian language. Our conversation is in English today as I don’t speak Italian, but Marco speaks excellent English. As you well know, I have a hard enough time in English as it is! Our conversation today is a wrap up of many of the topics we’ve discussed in the History of the Papacy Podcast. I think this is an excellent episode for the first episode of the year 2020. We get to look back at the topics we’ve talked about in the podcast, but with someone who can give us an on the ground perspective, an Italian perspective on the important events where Papal and Italian history intersected. ST 78 – Daniel, What a Proto-Revelation!

ST 78 – Daniel, What a Proto-Revelation! Description: Garry and I are at it again. We take a look at one of the most iconic books of the bible, the Book of Daniel. The early Christians loved it, Jews not as much, but still included it in their canon. Today, Garry leads us on a deep dive into the Book of Daniel. We explore the context and background of the book and have a laugh or two. I think you will really enjoy this collaboration between the History of the Bible and the History of the Papacy podcast. Background on Islam with Scott Rank

Episode 88: Background on Islam with Scott Rank Description: A new powerful force is entering the history of the Papacy and Christian Church during the 7th century. Islam will impact every facet of Christianity for centuries to come. The early 7th century is when Islam and the Arab armies hit the scene and everything will be different afterwards. I thought it would be a good idea to do an episode with some background and context of the Arabs and where the idea of Islam came from. We’ve been doing these quick context episodes. I’ve enjoyed doing them and I hope they help build background for upcoming and even past episodes. In order to help us develop this background and context for the rise of Islam, I’ve brought in a scholar on the Ottoman Empire and Islam, Professor Scott Rank of the History Unplugged Podcast. The Great Gregory Aftermath

Episode 87: The Great Gregory Aftermath Description: Today, we are going to take a quick look at the popes right after the papacy of Gregory the Great. We recall that the papacy of Gregory the Great is generally marked as the point where the city of Rome and the Roman church hit their low point in all the important areas a power needs: finance, politics, influence, culture and any other metric you can think of. Gregory began the process of reversing the backwards slide of Rome and the Roman Church. Let’s take a look at what happens in the next few decades in the papacy. This is a challenging time for popes of Rome, the Church in general and the entire western world. Jacob Baradaeus – Changing the Game

Episode 86: Jacob Baradaeus – Changing the Game Description: Today we’re going to do another quick survey of what was going on in other parts of the Christian world. All too often, I have to skim over or entirely skip some really interesting bits of the history of the Church. Sometimes small pieces of history can make a big difference later on. That is the case with the topic of today’s episode. Jacob Baradaeus is one such person who didn’t quite fit into the narrative of previous episodes, but this humble monk who lived thousands of miles from Rome set off events that would make an enormous difference after his times. We will look at the life of Jacob Baradaeus and why he was so important not only to the history of Christianity, but also the Popes of Rome. ST 76 Quo Vadis with The Partial Historians

Sidetrack Episode 76 ST 76 Quo Vadis with The Partial Historians Description: Today I have a really special episode I recorded with the great hosts of the podcast The Partial Historians. Dr. Greenfield and Dr. Radford are not only experts in the Roman Empire, they also know a thing or two about film. You will hear a conversation about the movie Quo Vadis. This is a great movie from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Doctors Greenfield and Radford show us many of the great parts of this film, the history behind the movie and some of the background of the film itself. This conversation was a great time. The movie has some serious issues, but it also stands up pretty well. Spend an hour or so with me and the Partial Historians learning about the movie and then 3 and a half more hours to enjoy the movie itself. It is a whole day well spend! The Fall and Rise of Rome

Episode 85 The Fall and Rise of Rome Description: Today we have a special episode called the Fall and Rise of Rome. I prepared and recorded this episode for Robin Pierson and it originally was published on his History of Byzantium podcast feed. Someone had a question for him about what was happening in Rome and western Europe during the early Byzantine period. I looked at how the decline of the political Roman Empire in the west corresponded with the rise of Christianity and the Papacy in the west. I also discuss the demographics and state of the actual city of Rome during this period. I think you will really enjoy. This episode is a nice review and launch to the next phase of the early medieval period we are getting into.
