Daily Devo | The Way, The Truth, and The Life (New Testament in a Year, John 14:1-31)

How do you respond to betrayal? Jesus had just finished laying out the ways his disciples would betray or abandon him in his hour of need. How might Jesus respond to the way we all break faith with him? His response here is not judgment, but grace. Jesus responds by making a way to the Father and by sending us the Holy Spirit! Rather than judgment or vengeance, Jesus offers us the lasting peace that only God can give. Where there was no way home for us, Jesus becomes the way, the truth, and the life. Daily Devo | "Just As I Have Loved You" (New Testament in a Year, John 13:21-38)

During the Passover meal, Jesus becomes deeply troubled as he reveals that one of his disciples will betray him. After Judas departs, Jesus begins preparing the remaining disciples for what is about to happen. He speaks of his coming glorification through his death and gives them a new commandment: to love one another as he has loved them. Peter confidently declares that he is willing to lay down his life for Jesus, but Jesus gently predicts that Peter will deny him three times before morning. The people around Jesus continually break faith with him but he will continue to offer his own faithfulness in response! Looking for a previous devo? Want to share one with a friend? Daily Devo | The Power of Knowing Who & Whose We Are (New Testament in a Year, John 13:1-20)

In a stunning act of humility, Jesus rises from the table, takes the role of a servant, and begins washing his disciples’ feet. When Peter objects, Jesus explains that this washing is necessary and points to a deeper spiritual cleansing that only he can provide. Jesus knows that he comes from the Father and is soon returning to the Father. In other words, he knows who he is and whose he is. Grounded in that identity, he demonstrates for us that God is a servant and as God's children, we should be also.Looking for a previous devo? Want to share one with a friend? Daily Devo | Being Right for All the Wrong Reasons (New Testament in a Year, John 11:45-57)

After the raising of Lazarus, many people choose to trust in Jesus but others choose to report him to religious leaders. Those leaders are greatly concerned about Jesus' growing influence and fear that Rome will punish them all for the chaos surrounding Jesus. The high priest Caiaphas ends the conversation by revealing that God has told him that it would be better for "one man should die for the people than for the whole nation to be destroyed." He is right, but for all the wrong reasons. We are always in danger when we attempt to justify worldly plans with "godly" reasons.Looking for a previous devo? Want to share one with a friend? Daily Devo | Honest to God? (New Testament in a Year, John 11:17-44)

By the time Jesus arrives, Lazarus has already been dead for four days. Martha and Mary are both grieving deeply, struggling to understand why Jesus did not come sooner. Jesus comforts Martha by declaring, “I am the resurrection and the life,” calling her to trust in him. As Jesus sees the grief of those around him, he is deeply moved and weeps alongside them, revealing both his compassion and his power. Mary and Martha both express their honest frustration, pain, as well as their continuing faith in Jesus. Their honesty demonstrates how deep questions and grief can be an expression of sincere and God-honoring faith.Looking for a previous devo? Want to share one with a friend? Daily Devo | When God's Answer is "No" or "Not Yet" (New Testament in a Year, John 11:1-16)

When Lazarus becomes seriously ill, his sisters Mary and Martha send word to Jesus. Instead of responding with urgency, Jesus intentionally delays for two more days! Why? Even more perplexing, after waiting two extra days, Jesus informs his disciples that he is glad he was not there, because what is about to happen will strengthen their faith. Despite their fear of going back to Judea where people recently wanted to kill Jesus, the disciples join Jesus, though with some hesitancy. Where can we find strength and encouragement when God's timing does not make sense to us?Looking for a previous devo? Want to share one with a friend? Daily Devo | My Sheep Listen to My Voice (New Testament in a Year, John 10:22-42)

In response to his accusers, Jesus describes his followers as those who hear his voice and follow him. He then adds the powerful declaration, “The Father and I are one,” leading many to (rightfully) accuse him of claiming to be God. Jesus asks them to carefully consider his teaching and his works before rejecting his divine claims, which some do as they turn to Jesus in faith.Looking for a previous devo? Daily Devo | I Chose This (Holiday Replay, John 10:11-18)

In this holiday replay from February 28, 2025, we hear Jesus declare that he is the good shepherd. Unlike hired hands who may run when danger arrives, Jesus is ready to lay down his life for the sheep, for us. No one compels him; Jesus chose this! As we follow Jesus's example, it is important that we also take care of ourselves. "Self-care" is a constant refrain today but self-care must have the goal of sustaining us in the work of laying down our lives for those in our care, or else we risk becoming the hired hands that Jesus warns against.Looking for a previous devo? Daily Devo | It's Who You Know (New Testament in a Year, John 8:37-59)

After Jesus challenges whether the people know God at all, they respond by accusing Jesus of being demon-possessed. They are especially offended by Jesus' claim to know Abraham, their forefather who lived almost two thousand years before. Jesus responds, “I tell you the truth, before Abraham was even born, I am!” (v58). The crowd attempts to stone Jesus for making such a divine claim. They hear a threat in Jesus' divine claim but it is the reason Jesus can promise what he does, "anyone who obeys my teaching will never die!” (v51).Looking for a previous devo? Daily Devo | The Truth Will Set You Free! (New Testament in a Year, John 8:21-36)

As the conversation continues, Jesus explains that they do not understand who he truly is. He hints that when he is crucified, they may finally understand. Some begin to believe in him, and he promises that those who follow his teachings will know the truth, and the truth will set them free. When the people insist that they are already free because they are descendants of Abraham, Jesus reveals a deeper kind of bondage — the slavery of sin. He explains that true freedom is found only through the Son, who has the authority to set people free completely.Looking for a previous devo? Want to share one with a friend? Daily Devo | Go and Sin No More! (New Testament in a Year, John 8:1-20)

The religious leaders expose a woman caught in adultery, hoping to trap Jesus between the demands of the law and his reputation for mercy. Instead of responding immediately, Jesus calmly exposes the hypocrisy of her accusers by saying that the one without sin should cast the first stone. One by one, they leave, and Jesus, left alone with the woman, offers both grace and truth: he does not condemn her, but he also calls her to "sin no more". Jesus sees our sin as something to heal rather than condemn.Looking for a previous devo? Want to share one with a friend? Daily Devo | Rivers of Living Water? (New Testament in a Year, John 7:32-53)

He promises that those who believe in him will experience “rivers of living water” flowing from within them, referring to the Holy Spirit who would later be given to believers. As opposition against Jesus grows, his brothers urge him to go publicly to the Feast of Tabernacles and play to the crowds. Daily Devo | Understanding & Misunderstanding Jesus (New Testament in a Year, John 6:1-21)

Jesus miraculously and compassionately feeds a massive crowd with only five loaves and two fish. Afterwards, he walks across the waves of the Sea of Galilee. These miracles are not only a display of Jesus' power, they recall the miracles of the Exodus, when God fed the people with bread from heaven and mastered the waters to rescue them from their bondage in Egypt. Daily Devo | The Case for Christ (New Testament in a Year, John 5:25-47)

Why believe Jesus? In response to his accusers, Jesus lays out multiple witnesses that they should consider: John the Baptist, Jesus' teachings and miracles, and what God says in the scriptures. Ultimately, Jesus refuses to accept his accusers' judgment of him because they have no love of God in their hearts. Their hard hearts are the reasons they cannot acknowledge what all these witnesses say about Jesus. In the end, Jesus is not the defendant but the judge, which is great reason for celebration or concern, depending on where we stand.Looking for a previous devo? Want to share one with a friend? After healing a man who had been unable to walk for many years, Jesus tells him to pick up his mat and walk, but the miracle takes place on the Sabbath, provoking anger from the religious leaders. Did Jesus break God's Sabbath law or merely the traditions surrounding it? And if he broke the law, was that ok? When is it right for us to break God's law? Daily Devo | Could He Be the One? (New Testament in a Year, John 4:31-54)

After encountering Jesus, the Samaritan woman leaves her water jar behind and rushes back to her town to tell others about him, inviting them to come and see for themselves. While his disciples focus on lunch, Jesus teaches them that his true nourishment comes from doing the Father’s will. Many Samaritans believe because of the woman’s testimony, and even more come to faith after hearing Jesus personally, recognizing him as the savior — not just the savior of the Samaritans or the Jews, but savior of the world. We are told that Jesus "had to go" through Samaria, where he stops at a well and begins a surprising conversation with a Samaritan woman, crossing cultural, ethnic, and social boundaries. Asking her for a drink, he offers her “living water” that satisfies the deepest thirst of the soul and leads to eternal life. When Jesus enters the temple in Jerusalem, he finds it filled with merchants and money changers who have turned a place of worship into a marketplace. Driven by passion for his Father’s house, he clears the temple to make it a more fitting place for people to encounter God. Daily Devo | The Road to Emmaus (New Testament in a Year, Luke 24:1-35)

On the road to Emmaus, two discouraged disciples walk away from Jerusalem, confused about Jesus’ death. A stranger joins them on their journey, but God conceals the fact that this "stranger" is Jesus. This kind "stranger" first listens to the story of their distress before explaining a missing piece in their understanding. The scriptures, says the stranger, clearly show that they should not be surprised by Jesus' suffering because the scriptures clearly claim that the Messiah must suffer. Daily Devo | I Want to Want What You Want, God! (New Testament in a Year, Luke 22:31-53)

Jesus goes to the Mount of Olives to pray, urging His disciples to pray so they will not fall into temptation. In deep anguish, Jesus offers his desires to his Father but adds that what he wants most of all if for his Father's will to be done. Jesus offers us a master class in prayer and faithfulness. It is right and good for us to give full voice to our desires in prayer, but a larger purpose in prayer is to learn to want what God wants even more. Prayer can train us to trust in God's wisdom and kindness.Looking for a previous devo? Want to share one with a friend? Daily Devo | Descending Into Greatness (New Testament in a Year, Luke 22:1-30)

At the Last Supper, Jesus expresses his deep desire to eat with them before his suffering. Using the bread and wine of the Passover meal, he points to his sacrifice and covenant love for them, and for us. Yet even in this intimate moment, the disciples descend into a fight about who among them is the greatest. Jesus gently corrects them, teaching that true greatness in God’s kingdom is found in humility and service, with his own life as our example. Looking for a previous devo? Daily Devo | How to Live Like Jesus Will Return Tomorrow (New Testament in a Year, Luke 21:20-38)

Christians often turn to passages like this and wonder, "When will Jesus return?" Jesus seems to be intentionally ambiguous but what he is very clear about is how we should live until that day comes. Jesus warns his disciples to guard their hearts against distraction, indulgence, and anxiety, urging them to stay alert and prayerful so they will be ready for whatever is to come, whenever it may come. Daily Devo | When "Less" Truly Is More (New Testament in a Year, Luke 21:1-4)

Jesus observes rich people giving their offerings at the temple but highlights a poor widow who contributes just two small coins. Though her gift seems insignificant, Jesus declares that she has given more than all the rest because she gave out of her need rather than her surplus. This moment reveals once again that God sees beneath the surface. God measures generosity not by amount but by sacrifice and trust, honoring a heart that gives fully and dependently.Looking for a previous devo? Want to share one with a friend? Daily Devo | Choosing Between Power, Profit, and Peace (New Testament in a Year, Luke 19:28-48)

As Jesus approaches Jerusalem, he weeps over the city, grieving that they will choose a path of power and violence rather than his way of peace. He warns that their choice will lead to the horrors that were later fulfilled when Rome crushed the Jewish rebellions. Entering the temple, he drives out those who have turned it into a place of profit, declaring its true purpose as a house of prayer. We are God’s temple today: are our hearts more like a place of profit or a house of prayer for all people?Looking for a previous devo? Want to share one with a friend? In response to this unexpected grace, Zacchaeus repents, offering not only repentance but a desire to restore anyone he has wronged. Daily Devo | "What Do You Want Me To Do For You?" (New Testament in a Year, Luke 18:18-43)

It's a powerful question that sits in the middle of two stories about blindness, faith, and understanding. Jesus takes his disciples aside and details his coming suffering, death, and resurrection, yet they fail to understand. As they approach Jericho, a blind beggar cries out to Jesus despite the many folks who tell him to be quiet. Jesus asks him, "What do you want me to do for you?" The answer might seem obvious, but we'll never know unless we ask the question. Do we know what we want? Do we know what others want, even people who are close to us? In the end, this blind man sees clearly what Jesus' twelve disciples still cannot see.Looking for a previous devo? Want to share one with a friend? Daily Devo | Perseverance and Humility in Prayer (New Testament in a Year, Luke 18:1-14)

Jesus teaches about persistent prayer through the parable of a widow who continually seeks justice from an unjust judge, showing that God, who is righteous and compassionate, will respond to those who cry out to Him. He then contrasts two men praying in the temple—a self-righteous Pharisee and a humble tax collector—revealing that God honors those who come with humility and repentance rather than pride. Together, these teachings emphasize that a faithful life is marked by persistent dependence on God and a posture of humility before Him.Looking for a previous devo? Want to share one with a friend? Daily Devo | The Best Investment Advice From Jesus! (New Testament in a Year, Luke 16:1-18)

Want to make the best possible investments with your money? Do you want to make the ultimate plans for the greatest future returns? Jesus tells the parable of a shrewd manager who, facing dismissal, wisely uses his remaining opportunity to prepare for the future. In essence, he uses what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose. Sometimes you can take it with you! So how does this advice apply to how we use money? Daily Devo | Welcome Home! (New Testament in a Year, Luke 15:11-32)

In the parable of the prodigal son, Jesus tells of a younger son who squanders his inheritance in reckless living, eventually returning home in desperation and repentance. Instead of rejection, he is met with extravagant grace as his father runs to embrace and restore him. Meanwhile, the older brother resents the celebration. He is perhaps even more lost that his brother was, lost not because of his sin but because of his "righteousness". Jesus tells this story to not only illustrate God's joyful grace towards us, but also to challenge us to celebrate and share God's grace rather than resist it.Looking for a previous devo? Imagine a healthy person becoming upset that doctors pay so much attention to sick people. Such a complaint would be hard to imagine yet the religious leaders complained that Jesus spent so much time with "tax collectors and sinners". In their understanding, those were all the wrong people. In response, Jesus tells three parables in a row about God's desire to "seek and save the lost". Daily Devo | The Art of Being a Neighbor (New Testament in a Year, Luke 10:25-42)

Who is my neighbor? Jesus answers this question with the Parable of the Good Samaritan. The story is rich and deep and has multiple applications but at the very least, it shows us that being a neighbor is to love those whom God puts in our path. With this mindset, interruptions can become opportunities to love in the way that Jesus has loved us. Could this season be an opportunity to let go of something that keeps us too busy to love our neighbors? This video was originally posted on February 14, 2024 during Lent but serves to continue our current reading plan for "New Testament in a Year".
