Today’s guest is Gary Te Roller, a DNA nutritionist who blends modern science, functional health, and ancestral practices. His whole approach is pretty different. Where most people add more supplements, more protocols, more “fixes”, Gary works the other way around. He looks at things like genetic analysis, blood chemistry, even Ayurvedic assessment, to strip away what’s actually getting in the way so the body can do what it’s designed to do.His path into this wasn’t straightforward. He went through a tough period in his life, including addiction, and that’s what pushed him to question everything around health and the way we approach it. That turned into over a decade of studying what actually works, not what’s trending or being sold, but what the research really says when you look a bit deeper. His philosophy is simple: stop fixing, start aligning. In this episode, we talk about his journey, what functional health really means, and why he thinks modern healthcare often misses the bigger picture. We also get into things likeenvironmental toxins, different types of stress, how to better align with your body day to day, and even things like personalized sleep and simple habits that actually move the needle. So, let’s get into it and welcome Gary Teroller. Today I’m really excited to welcome Rip Esselstyn to the Health, Happiness & Planet podcast.Rip is a former professional triathlete and firefighter who turned a simple idea inside his Texas firehouse into a global movement. What began as an effort to help his fellow firefighters improve their health grew into the Engine 2 lifestyle and eventually into PLANTSTRONG, his company dedicated to making whole-food, plant-based eating accessible, practical, and convenient for families everywhere. But Rip’s story is about more than food. It’s about leadership, consistency, and living what you believe. Plant-based living runs deep in the Esselstyn family. His father, Caldwell Esselstyn, is a pioneer in the prevention and reversal of heart disease and I had the pleasure of speaking with him on a previous episode number 37 of this podcast. Rip has been featured on national television, appeared in the documentary Forks Over Knives, and served as executive producer of The Game Changers, helping challenge long-held myths about meat, protein, and strength. Through his books, his podcast, retreats, coaching programs, and the PLANTSTRONG food line, he continues to make plant-based living practical and accessible. At the heart of it all, Rip’s message is simple: health doesn’t have to be complicated. What if your doctor prescribed vegetables instead of pills?Today’s guest, Dr. Michael Klaper, is not only asking that question—he’s built his life’s work around answering it. A graduate of the University of Illinois College of Medicine, Dr. Klaper trained in surgery, anesthesiology, orthopedics, and obstetrics across top institutions in North America. But afteryears in clinical practice, he came to a life-changing realization: true healing doesn’t come from prescriptions alone—it comes from lifestyle, especially what we put on our plates. Now an internationally recognized teacher, clinician, and speaker, Dr. Klaper has become a leading voice in the movement to integrate nutrition into mainstream medicine. He teaches that a whole-food, plant-based diet can not only prevent but often reverse many chronic diseases that dominate our healthcare system today. Through his groundbreaking initiative, Moving Medicine Forward, he’s reaching medical students across the globe with a simple but revolutionary message: food is medicine, and nutrition belongs at the heart of medical education. In our conversation, we dive into his personal transformation, the systemic flaws in how physicians are trained, and the uphill battle to shift medicine toward prevention. What if I told you that the plastic cup you just tossed into a Starbucks recycling bin will never actually be recycled? Our guest is Susan Keefe. Susan founded a consulting business called Eco Forward, which is certified as a California Green Business and she also works as, the Southern California Director for Beyond Plastics. She’s, an environmental advocate fighting to reduce single-use plastics via education and the creation/enforcement of strong plastic policies. She also works to expose false recycling claims and demand honesty from corporations and local municipalities. Last year, Susan personally investigated Starbucks' so-called "recyclable" plastic cups alongside her colleague, retired chemical engineer, Jan Dell. They brought the story to CBS television to prove that, despite the custom-labeled recycling bins found in many Starbucks stores, the plastic cups and lids aren’t being recycled at all. The reason? It’s not economically or technically feasible, and there’s no market for them. The plastic waste ends up in landfill, or worst incinerated. Is It’s piling up, and consumers are being misled. But thanks to relentless advocacy and media investigations, Starbucks has finally begun transitioning away from plastic cups in certain states—a small but crucial first step.In this episode, we’ll dive into Susan’s groundbreaking investigation, why corporate accountability is critical, and what you can do to be part of the solution. If you’ve ever believed in the power of recycling, you need to hear this conversation. The correct term is "material recovery facility" (MRF). While the two are often confused, a material recovery facility is the accurate term used in the waste management industry. We appreciate Susan’s attention to detail and her dedication to providing clear, accurate information.
What if I told you that one of the most celebrated French chefs, trained in the art of rich sauces, foie gras, and fine meats, completely abandoned it all? That he turnedhis Michelin-starred restaurant into a 100% vegan dining experience—not because he had to, but because he believed it was the right thing to do? Well, that’s exactly what today’s guest, Alexis Gauthier, did.For years, Alexis thrived in the world of fine dining, mastering the traditions of French cuisine. But deep down, something didn’t sit right. He started questioning the use of animals in food and the ethics behind it. In 2014, he made a personaldecision to go vegan. But he didn’t stop there. In 2021, he shocked the culinary world by removing all animal products from his restaurant’s menu, turning Gauthier Soho in London into a groundbreaking, fully plant-based fine dining experience. This wasn’t just a career change—it was a statement. Alexis believes that French gastronomy doesn’t need meat to be indulgent, creative, or extraordinary. He’s proving that plant-based cuisine isn’t a limitation—it’s an unexplored frontier, full of possibilities.Today, we’ll dive into his journey, the challenges he faced, and why he believes the future of food is completely animal-free. We’ll also talk about the emotional side of his transformation, what it meant for him as a chef, a business owner, and a person who once built his career on dishes he can no longer stand behind. So, whether you’re a food lover, a chef, or just someone curious about where the future of dining is headed, you won’t want to miss this conversation. Today, I have the pleasure of introducing you to an incredible duo, Ange and Marty, the founders of The A Life in Australia. These two are truly passionate about movement and have spent over a decade exploring and sharing the wonders of what our bodies are capable of. From their early days traveling the world as freestyle dancers (where they first met!), to taking multiple yoga trainings in the U.S., mastering Pilates rehab techniques, and developing their own strength and mobility practice, Ange and Marty have turned mindful movement into a lifestyle. In 2017, Ange—an osteopath with over 10 years of experience—decided to shift her focus from "fixing people" to empowering them to move well and feel good in their own bodies. This is how The A Life was born, and today it’s a thriving community, both online and in person, where movement is accessible, fun, and most importantly, safe. Their philosophy emphasizes quality over quantity, encouraging a sustainable and injury-free approach to fitness. In Part 1 of our conversation, we cover some fascinating topics. We talk about the critical role of inflammation in the body, and why feeling good and being strong is more important than chasing superficial goals like looking younger. We dive into adrenal fatigue, thyroid burnout, and how certain types of exercise can either help or hinder your hormonal health. Ange and Marty also share their insights on the impact of movement on hormones and the difference between bad movement and high-quality movement. We finish Part 1 with a conversation on movement variability, creating a movement lifestyle, and how distributing movement throughout the day can positively transform your health. This is just the beginning—so be sure to tune in for Part 2, coming out in two weeks, where we’ll continue exploring more strategies for building a sustainable, movement-focused lifestyle.
