Sarah Pokorná, is Digital Marketing Director at Dragon Metrics. She holds degrees in both Psychology and Digital Marketing and has been doing SEO, Marketing and Psychomarketing in corporate roles for 12 years. As SEOs, I think we spend FAR too much time obsessing over Google ‘Ranking Factors’ (most recently the API leaks) and NOT enough time trying to actually understand and empathize with searchers – the people we are supposedly making content for and trying to win over in the SERPs. In this conversation, Sarah brings her unique perspective drawing from her background in psychology to help unpack some of the psychological perspectives searchers have – particularly cognitive biases. If you want to gain a deeper understanding and get into the minds of the people who search Google – the same people who traffic websites and ultimately drive revenue and business goals for sites and businesses – this episode is definitely worth a listen!Topics In This Episode:Cognitive Biases in SearchWhy were AI Overviews such a miss for Google? The importance of fact-checking for SEO contentSearch and Social Impacts on the Nervous SystemHow did biases impact how the SEO world reacted to Google’s API Leaks?Biases like Confirmation Bias in SEO Case StudiesWhy do overconfident people actually believe they are good at SEO?Should Google play a role in preventing misinformation? What else can we as SEOs do to understand searchers better? And much more – listen now!Related Episodes You Might Like127: Image Optimization, Algorithmic Biases, ADHD & SEO w/Myriam Jessier097: Improve Your SEO With Keyword Psychographics w/Marty WeintraubArticles, Resources, and Linkshttps://www.dragonmetrics.com/confirmation-bias/https://www.sarahpresch.com/post/cognitive-biases-in-seoNeurodivergents in SEOGoogle API Leak: Sparktoro’s initial post about it<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Cyber-Effect-Pioneering-Cyberpsychologist-Explains/dp/0812997859" target="_blank" rel="ug
Will Critchlow is the CEO of SearchPilot, an SEO A/B testing company. I invited Will back to Experts on the Wire to discuss the Future of SEO. I feel like things have felt very turbulent and uncertain in the SEO world lately (more than usual!) – because of things like AI/Chat-GPT, changes in how the community engages online, GA4, massive SERP changes from Google, and changes in the economy and world at large post-covid.I’ve always known Will for having a great perspective on the future of our industry so I wanted to get his take on what the future of SEO holds. Is THIS finally the inflection moment where ‘SEO is dead’? How does he see the next 5-10 years playing out? If it’s not dying, how will it look different? What should SEOs and businesses be doing to future-proof their marketing? How do we all navigate these big changes?Topics In This Episode Include:How is AI affecting informational queries? What the ancient steel and iron industry has to do with contentIs it worth still investing in content marketing? How is the eCommerce SEO space changing? What does Google core updates have to do with the now old concept of the “Google Dance”? The Google Dance was an SEO nuisance from years ago, and the core updates are a more modern challenge. The connection lies in the fact that you can’t separate the past of SEO from where we are today. And you can’t fully do great SEO today without having some understanding of where things came from.In this episode, Will describes exactly what the connection between core updates and the Google Dance might be — and why an understanding of this evolution is important. We cover that, and many other traditional to modern ranking factors. In this episode: Why Will started Distilled and got into SEO Quality vs Sustainability in SEO Distilled’s Relationship with Moz April 2003 and “Index Everything”?! Today’s episode I think is an important one for anyone who’s a part of, or interested in, the SEO industry. Whether you’re an actual practitioner, maybe newer to the space, or just following along and love SEO – you’ll probably get something out of this discussion.I wanted to talk with Barry and get more details around things a lot of people are curious about…For one, he’s known for being very prolific, publishing up to 5+ articles per day, following the SEO news, sharing things via Twitter, engaging with the community … AND running a company full time (that has nothing to do with SEO).And I wanted to get his take on the state of Google right and now, and where things might be going. Barry is often the one reporting news — but I wanted to give him the spotlight and learn more about someone who is truly invaluable in this industry. Some of the many things covered:Barry reacts to his very first blog post from 2005!Why Barry started blogging to begin withHow Barry got a Wiki pageHis thoughts on Danny Sullivan’s role at GoogleThe best way to send Barry SEO news tipsDoes Google give Barry info “off the record”?The recent Google Core updatesZombie Clicks (?)And more – enjoy!Tools MentionedSearchmetricsArticles, Resources, and Links MentionedSearch Engine JournalSearch Engine WatchSearch Engine LandLoren BakerDanny Sullivan Third Door MediaSearch Engine Roundtable – Welcome to the RustyBrick WeblogTwitter QuestionsSearch Quality Evaluator GuidelinesGary Illyes<a href="https://www.evolvingseo.com/2019/07/25/gary-illyes-dinner-notes/" target
On April 4th 2017, I had the opportunity to sit down at dinner with Gary Illyes and about seven other SEOs (including Paul Shapiro, who was the one who nicely invited me). We got to ask him questions and chat about SEO and Google.Immediately after leaving, I got out my phone and recorded about 10 minutes of voice memos of everything I could remember from this dinner. We definitely heard some things I had not heard elsewhere (and a few things have since come out and confirmed since then). After over two years, I’m finally sharing my raw, unedited voice memo with you It was originally meant to be private — just really so I could remember all the stuff we learned, but I thought after some time has passed now, it might add value for anyone else who wants to listen. Here are the general topics from the voice memo, in order.NOTE: These are stated as ‘truths’ from April 2017 – remember things for sure could have changed by now, but at the time this was told to us as to how thing are. Also, it starts a bit choppy as I’m randomly remembering stuff, but gets a lot more smooth (and I think interesting) as it continues.Topics:AMP does not pass the mobile-friendly test.Hidden JS contentPurchasing an old domain with old contentChanging the context and content of old URLsLosing star snippets can indicate a sitewide issueThe structured data testing tool uses the same exact system as their algorithmPanda is a sitewide signal, and they have an actual Panda score302s vs 301s and is this why Wired lost their traffic when going to https? (very surprising answer here)Ignoring partial manual action penaltiesWhat links are ALWAYS ok to remove or disavow (and not)The old “topical authority” algoAdding new low-quality URLs to a siteKnowledge boxes in the US but not CanadaHow does Google know when a search like “ring” has a brand intent?Google’s concept of a “site” (subfolders vs subdomains – what is a “site”?) and domain clusteringSites that don’t need to worry about links in any way whatsoeverDA is OK as a metric, but one thing to be aware ofWhat is going to replace all manual actionsSitewide signals were updated in the Feb 2017 updateGoogle does not click behind tabs etc (when fetching via JS is required) because they don’t want to end up in a secure or private area, or in a .php file etcHow to rank for big head keywords like “meat” The post The Private Voice Memo I Made After Dinner With Gary Illyes [2017] appeared first on Evolving SEO.

I love this strategy in this week’s episode because it takes advantage of “sawdust” – the stuff leftover from something else, but it can be USED to provide value and get you links in return. And yes, this is a supplementary link acquisition strategy – not to necessarily replace your primary link acquisition – but you could take this concept and take it even further, which we chat about throughout the interview. After listening to this show, you’ll know how to set up your own free stock photo library in Flickr, and earn links.Listen Now!BuzzSumo – One of my favorite tools for coming up with content ideas, finding people who share content in an industry, and tons more (like alerts to keep an eye on your competitor’s links). When traffic drop issues started hitting my inbox early 2017 – I was perplexed. These weren’t the typical link penalties, thin content or panda algo issues. There was something different going on here. By March/April of 2017 I’d seen enough of these issues, and along with other SEOs started connecting the dots.In June I then published a 10-minute little episode called “The Email“. In this episode, it describes a different sort of SEO problem. A new breed of SEO which relates more to UX, usability, and distracting navigation content. Now – one year later – it’s more clear than ever. UX, usability, accessibility – are CORE essentials of modern SEO. I’ve seen sites get crushed in the last year with these issues. That’s why I invited today’s guest – Kim Krause Berg – onto the show. She is an expert in usability, UX and accessibility. In fact, she provides these services TO SEOs.Here are a few of many things covered in this great discussion! What SEO in 1996 Looked Like! Are browser and device emulators good? What to ask site testersVerbs vs NounsWhy accessibility helps SEOColorblind?
