Virginia Bristol Johnson is a Filipina-American costume designer living in Greater Boston. Prior to moving to Greater Boston 20+ years ago, Virginia (or V) traveled all over the United States working as a costume designer for regional and summer-stock theatres. V was born in Luzon, Philippines and raised by a flock of aunties who taught her how to stitch. A Navy brat, V lived in dozens of cities and towns for most of her childhood and often served as the family's translator. With each move, V learned resilience and how to adapt to new schools, new climates, and new communities. To this day, V cannot fully explain what her father did on the various nuclear-powered aircraft carriers he worked on over the span of 16 years but she became adept at articulating not having a parent around for 9-12 months at a time while he was in the Indian Ocean or Persian Gulf or making history on the first nuclear-powered carrier to transit the Suez Canal. Wherever they happened to live (for 3-6 months or a a few years) V spent her days playing classical piano, learning traditional Filipino dance, shaving seconds off her mile, developing an everlasting love of reading and public libraries, and competing in various academic competitions. In 1989, V's family would relocate to a small town in Eastern Iowa (population 7,000) so her parents could help provide care for ailing family. As the only non-white student in a 400 student high school, V went from having a deep AAPI+ community to suddenly explaining what language they spoke at home, why they went to Chicago or Des Moines every few months to go grocery shopping, and calling out the prejudices of her peers. She often describes this period as one of the greatest challenges of her life but also when she found her authentic voice. V would remain in Iowa for college to be close to her family, accepting a work study job in the Drake University costume shop which changed the course of her life. For almost two decades V has designed an array of costumes for television, documentaries, and feature films. She learned the ropes of the costume department by serving as a costume supervisor on such acclaimed productions as The Social Network, Spotlight, Black Mass, and Joy.Her earliest opportunities as a motion picture costume designer were found in the arena of non-fiction storytelling, wherein she created period costumes for the examinations of various historical figures in the PBS productions, The War That Made America (five part mini-series), Nova, and American Experience (various mini-series).V considers herself "genre agnostic" - most interested in telling character stories through how they dress. Sometimes choosing a project because it might appeal to the young people in her life while other times wanting to spend time exploring worlds and people that she wouldn't naturally gravitate to. Having earned her MFA in Costume Design & Fashion History from West Virginia University in the heart o

Wicked Costume Designer Paul Tazewell & Producer Host Phillip Boutté Jr. In ‘Wicked,’ the Fashion Is a Big Piece of the Magic Costume designer Paul Tazewell spared no detail in bringing Elphaba and Glinda to life through their clothing. Although Tazewell has more than three decades of experience designing costumes for Broadway (he earned his first Tony nomination for Bring in ‘Da Noise, Bring in ‘Da Funk in 1996), “my love of detail is so much more apparent with film than it is necessarily with theater,” he says. (It’ll probably come as no surprise to learn that Tazewell is a Virgo.) For Tazewell, it wasn’t about recreation, nor was it about reinventing the wheel: Success lies in identifying those key looks, then being able to “digest how I experience them and see them through my lens and how I might reimagine what that same energy and life force looks like.” Sponsored By: Universal Costume Department Editor Credit: Oliver Ricketts Tags: #wicked #paultazewell #costumedesign #filmmaking #movie #cynthiaerivo #arianagrande #designinghollywood #wickedmovie

She has also been a frequent collaborator of directors Jan de Bont and Paul Verhoeven, acting as costume designer on de Bont's films Speed (1994), Twister (1996) and The Haunting (1999), as well as Verhoeven's films Basic Instinct (1992), Showgirls (1995), Starship Troopers (1997) and Hollow Man (2000). Sharon Stone has praised her experience with Mirojnick on Basic Instinct: “I don’t think I had any idea, really, that I could look so great. Then I was like, "‘Oh, I could look like that all the time. Maybe I should get with it.’" Ellen really taught me how to feel empowered like the character I was playing.”
Greig Fraser, ACS, ASC, (born 3 October 1975) is an Australian cinematographer who studied at the RMIT University. His most well-known work includes the films Zero Dark Thirty (2012), Lion (2016), Rogue One (2016), Vice (2018), Dune (2021), The Batman (2022) and The Creator (2023). For his short film Cracker Bag he was nominated for Best Cinematography at the 2003 AFI Awards. For his work on Lion, he won the American Society of Cinematographers Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography in Theatrical Releases and AACTA Award for Best Cinematography and received Academy Award and BAFTA Award nominations. Fraser shot Rogue One on the Arri Alexa 65 large format digital camera and Panavision lenses from the 1970s, making it the first feature film shot entirely with the Alexa 65. Fraser said of working with the Alexa 65, "The images are sharper and have more resolution, and those things are an advantage, but for me it is about the depth of the image -- there is a three-dimensionality to it. Often the beauty came from the texture; we found that the camera excelled when we were filming something with texture; it really enhanced the quality of picture." Fraser returned to the Star Wars franchise with the 2019 television series The Mandalorian. In 2020, for his work on the series, Fraser won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series (Half-Hour). For his work on Dune he won his first Academy Award for Best Cinematography in 2022. Fraser said a feature of his work in that film was intentionally using simple compositions, "We tried to simplify the frames as much as we could. By doing that, we've been able to give the viewers that absorption of story and experience" and colour palette: "We tried quite hard to make sure that it all sat within a certain tone."

"Tenet is a film about many things, from entropy to time travel, Armageddon to environmentalism. But it's also a film about Robert Pattinson wearing a succession of truly astonishing suits. For that, we thank Jeffrey Kurland. The storied costume designer had previously worked with Nolan on Inception – where he proved his tailoring chops – and Dunkirk, but Tenetposed a very specific set of challenges. The first one being just figuring out what the hell was actually going on. "I read the script at least six times before I even sat down to talk with Chris," Kurland tells me, over the phone, from LA. "That's how you do any Chris Nolan film. The script is there, and it's totally wonderful. And then it's usually up from there. It's always a wild ride." - Tom Banham, Esquire Magazine, September 22nd, 2020 Jeffrey Kurland began his career in costume design in New York City. After graduating from Northwestern University with a B.A. in design, he moved to the east coast to design for the theatre. Jeffrey soon segued into designing costumes for film when he began designing the stylish films of director Woody Allen. Jeffrey has the unique distinction of being the costume designer of 15 films for Woody Allen, from the late 1970s to the mid-1990s. He has since realized the visual story for over 40 films, collaborating with such renowned directors as Milos Forman, Neil Jordan, Steven Soderbergh, Michael Mann, and Christopher Nolan. During his career, Jeffrey has dressed a host of leading actors. He has created designs for leading men such as George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Matt Damon, Jamie Foxx, Robert Downey, Jr., Michael Caine, Viggo Mortensen and Leonardo DiCaprio. He has also designed for leading ladies Julia Roberts, Marion Cotillard, Cameron Diaz, Annette Bening, Diane Keaton, Gena Rowlands and Ellen Page. He received a BAFTA Award, Britain's highest film honor, for his designs for Radio Days and an Academy Award nomination for his work on Bullets Over Broadway. Jeffrey was awarded the Costume Designers Guild award for his designs for the film Erin Brockovich and received a nomination for his work on Ocean's 11. His work has also been recognized through being honored with The Hamilton Timeless Style Award. Jeffrey Kurland sits on the board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
