Read OnlineOne of the scribes came to Jesus and asked him, “Which is the first of all the commandments?” Mark 12:28We continue to read about Jesus’ various interactions, teachings, and prophetic actions in the Temple area during Passover, just days before He would be arrested and killed. During the week, Jesus cleansed the Temple of moneychangers and merchants and was confronted with hostility by various religious and political factions.First, a group of chief priests, scribes, and elders challenged His authority to cleanse the Temple and then unsuccessfully conspired with some Pharisees and Herodians to trap Him in a legal dilemma. Next, some Sadducees confronted Him, but Jesus’ answer exposed their misunderstanding of the Scriptures and the power of God. In today’s Gospel, after witnessing that exchange, a scribe—impressed by Jesus’ answer—came forward. Rather than trying to trap Him, he asks a sincere question: “Which is the first of all the commandments?”At that time, the scribe’s question reflected a common rabbinical discussion about the hierarchy of the Law. Perhaps because of the widespread disagreements among the various religious factions—priests, scribes, Pharisees, Sadducees—scholars often sought to determine a guiding principle for what had been identified in Jewish tradition as 613 commandments within the Torah. Some commandments, like the prohibition of idolatry, seemed weightier, while others, like dietary laws, were considered less important.Jesus’ response does not simply rank the commandments; it reveals their true purpose by uniting them in a way that fulfills the entire Law. Instead of engaging in legalistic debates, He elevates the discussion by going directly to the heart of the Law with a twofold summary: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength” and “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:30–31). By doing so, Jesus shows that love—of God first and of neighbor as an extension of that law—is the foundation and fulfillment of every commandment.The scribe’s response—“Well said, teacher”—demonstrates both humility and wisdom, and Jesus affirms his understanding: “You are not far from the Kingdom of God.” This interaction contrasts with the previous confrontations between Jesus and the religious leaders. Read OnlineSome Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus and put this question to him, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us, ‘If someone’s brother dies, leaving a wife but no child, his brother must take the wife and raise up descendants for his brother.’ Now there were seven brothers…” Mark 12:18–20The Sadducees were a Jewish sect composed mainly of the Temple leaders, including many priests. They held theological and political views that differed significantly from those of the Pharisees. The Sadducees accepted only the Torah (the first five books of the Old Testament) as authoritative, whereas the Pharisees recognized the entire Hebrew Scriptures, including the Prophets, historical books, and Wisdom literature, and upheld a highly developed oral tradition based on centuries of rabbinic interpretation. This led to tension and theological disagreements.The Sadducees denied the resurrection of the dead, the immortality of the soul, and the existence of angels—all of which were central to Pharisaic belief—because they believed those truths were not found in the Torah. They believed that God’s blessings were given for this life and that when one died, the soul perished with the body.Despite their theological disputes with the Pharisees, both groups found common ground in opposing Jesus. Today’s Gospel illustrates the Sadducees’ failed attempt to trap Jesus in a legalistic theological dilemma, using the law of Levirate marriage (cf. Deuteronomy 25:5–10) to challenge the doctrine of the resurrection.The Sadducees took their turn to trap Jesus not only to prove Jesus wrong but also to justify their beliefs before the Pharisees. They pose an extreme hypothetical scenario, in which seven brothers successively marry the same woman, each dying childless and ask: “At the resurrection when they arise, whose wife will she be? For all seven had been married to her” (Mark 12:23). Their intent is not to seek truth, but to mock the very idea of life after death.Jesus responds, not with complicated legal reasoning, but with divine wisdom that lifts their minds beyond earthly concerns. He begins by rebuking their limited understanding: “You do not know the Scriptures or the power of God” (Mark 12:24). Then, He offers a twofold response (cf. Mark 12:24–27).First, Jesus addresses the question of marriage after the resurrection: “When they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but they are like the angels in heaven.” After the resurrection of the dead, human existence will be radically transformed. They came and said to him, “Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man and that you are not concerned with anyone’s opinion. You do not regard a person’s status but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not? Should we pay or should we not pay?” Mark 12:13–14Just prior to today’s Gospel, the chief priests, scribes, and elders confronted Jesus in the Temple area while He taught, challenging His authority to drive out the moneychangers and merchants. Though they withdrew out of fear of opposition from the crowds, they sent the Pharisees and Herodians to trap Him (cf. Mark 11:27–33). The alliance of these five groups, who were often opposed to one another—especially the Pharisees and the Herodians—well illustrates the old adage: “The enemy of my enemy is my friend.”The Pharisees were known for their strict adherence to oral traditions derived from the Mosaic Law. They frequently clashed with the chief priests and elders, who focused on Temple worship and ceremonial rites.The Herodians were despised by both the Pharisees and the other leaders for their support of Herod and Roman occupation. Their allegiance to Rome enabled them to maintain political influence under Herod’s rule. Despite their usual animosity, these groups united in their shared opposition to Jesus. His ongoing influence among the people, His teachings that exposed their hypocrisy, and His actions in the Temple all threatened their authority and control.Though all five of these groups are less than inspirational, we can learn from them. They depict fallen human tendencies—such as pride, fear, and self-interest—that we all struggle with. First, true unity only comes from aligning ourselves with God and His Truth, which fosters humility, charity, and a desire to seek God’s will above our own interests. By contrast, the “unity” shared by this coalition of factions was grounded in malice. Hatred can so blind us that we turn from our core values and seek ways to fuel our resentment. This is precisely what these normally divided groups did: Their mutual hatred for Jesus and fear of losing influence over the community drove them to unite in a shared mission of opposition—something we, too, can fall into if we let malice guide us.In today’s Gospel, we can also learn from the questioning of the Pharisees and Herodians. They begin with flattery, which is always deceptive and manipulative. Their insincere praise was not meant to honor Jesus but to disarm Him and lure Him into their trap. Perhaps they failed to recall the wisdom found in Proverbs: “Those who speak flattery to their neighbor cast a net at their feet” (29:5) or “Charm is deceptive…” (3

Then he leased it to tenant farmers and left on a journey. At the proper time he sent a servant to the tenants to obtain from them some of the produce of the vineyard.” Mark 12:10–12Today’s Gospel takes place during the Passover at the Temple in Jerusalem, just days before Jesus’ Passion and Death. The chief priests, scribes, and elders of the people were outraged and wanted to put Jesus to death, but they feared the people who were hanging on His every word.In today’s parable, the “vineyard” is a biblical metaphor for Israel. The Prophet Isaiah chastised the people of Israel for being like a fruitless vineyard, and Jesus’ parable would have been immediately understood by His audience as a reference to that prophecy (cf. Isaiah 5:1–7). Fearlessly yet mercifully, Jesus brings this metaphor to life, applying it directly to Israel and the religious leaders who were present and plotting His death.Jesus’ parable teaches that God is the owner of the vineyard and has provided everything necessary for it to flourish: the hedge for protection, the wine press for fruitfulness, and the tower for vigilance. These symbolize God’s providence, blessings, and the spiritual resources given to His chosen people to bear fruit. The tenant farmers, to whom the vineyard is leased, represent Israel’s leaders, who were entrusted with shepherding God’s people.The servants sent by the owner symbolize the Old Testament prophets, whom God sent to call the people of Israel to repentance and fidelity. These prophets were often rejected, mistreated, or killed by Israel’s leaders—a sobering reminder of humanity’s resistance to God’s call throughout history, and our resistance to His grace today.The beloved son represents Jesus Himself, sent by the Father in a final appeal for repentance. However, the tenants of Israel—now referring to the chief priests, scribes, and elders before Him—plot to kill the son, mistakenly believing they can maintain their control over the Jewish people. Their envy and pride blind them to their God-given responsibilities within the community and their duty to accept Jesus as the Messiah.Though tensions were high and anger filled the hearts of the religious leaders, Jesus spoke boldly. While the people were amazed at His authority and teaching, they were likely uncertain and fearful of what might happen next.Most people in Jesus’ position, risking their lives as our Lord was, would quickly become worried for their own safety. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. John 3:16–18Saint John the Apostle is identified in his Gospel as “the disciple whom Jesus loved,” a title that appears multiple times and has been consistently understood in the Church’s tradition to refer to John himself (cf. John 13:23; 19:26; 20:2; 21:7; 21:20). By calling himself the beloved disciple, John was revealing his interior experience of the perfect love he encountered in Jesus. Certainly, Jesus loved everyone—equally and without limit. Yet John includes this personal designation not to claim favoritism, but to offer a personal testimony to the divine love made manifest in Christ’s humanity—love he experienced firsthand and which changed his life.Love plays a central role in John’s writings—not only in his Gospel but also in his letters and the Book of Revelation. In his First Letter, likely written to the Christian communities he helped convert and shepherd, John declares: “God is love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him” (1 John 4:16). This is both a personal sentiment and a profound theological affirmation. John speaks from both divine inspiration and lived experience; he had walked with Love Incarnate. To say “God is love” is to profess that love is not something God merely does—it is who God is. God’s love is not a feeling, not sentimentality, but the pure, self-giving, eternal communion of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—a love that precedes and surpasses all creation.That mystery lies at the very heart of today’s Solemnity. Because God is Love in His very essence, love naturally flows from His divine nature in superabundance. God loves because He is Love. Today’s Gospel reveals the most perfect expression of that divine essence: “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son…” This eternal, Trinitarian love is made visible in time when the Father sends the Son, conceived by the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary.Why does God give His Son? So that we might not perish but have eternal life. That is, so we may be drawn into the very life of God—into the Trinitarian communion of love. God desires to rescue us from condemnation and to share with us His Divine Existence.This is the essence of Divine Love. This is the Trinity. Or who gave you this authority to do them?” Mark 11:27–28Jesus and His disciples were in Jerusalem for Passover, which would culminate in His death. In the preceding months, Jesus prepared His disciples for this final journey, telling them three times that He would be handed over in Jerusalem, suffer, die, and rise again. Each time, the disciples failed to grasp the full meaning of His words.The week began with Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. The next day, Jesus drove the money changers, merchants, and others out of the Temple. As the week progressed, hostilities grew. Today, Jesus is confronted by the chief priests, scribes, and elders. Later in the week, He will face opposition from the Herodians, Pharisees, and Sadducees. Each of these groups held significant civil and religious authority within the Jewish community.The chief priests oversaw Temple worship. The scribes were experts in Jewish Law. The elders were respected lay leaders within the community. The Herodians were politically motivated supporters of Herod and Roman rule. The Pharisees focused on strict observance of the Law and oral traditions. The Sadducees denied beliefs, such as the resurrection and angels, and cooperated with Roman authorities to protect their positions.While Roman authorities governed Jerusalem civilly, the religious leaders held significant influence over the Temple and the enforcement of Jewish laws, matters that were of little concern to the Romans. The religious leaders could arrest people, but they lacked the authority to execute anyone—an authority they ultimately sought to use against Jesus. Tragically, they became icons of hostility and evil as they persecuted the Son of God.In today’s Gospel, the chief priests, scribes, and elders confronted Jesus: “By what authority are You doing these things?” This challenge was likely in response to Jesus’ actions the previous day when He cleansed the Temple. The tension and hostility were palpable. The disciples were fearful, and those observing took sides—some angry at Jesus, others concerned for what might happen to Him.Jesus’ disposition and response to these icons of hostility and evil offer insight into how we must confront every diabolical attack and temptation in our own lives. Read OnlineEarly in the morning, as they were walking along, they saw the fig tree withered to its roots. Peter remembered and said to him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered.” Mark 11:20–21The prophets often used the image of a barren fig tree to symbolize Israel’s fruitless spirituality (cf. Hosea 9:10; Jeremiah 8:13). Though they were God’s chosen people, with whom God established His Covenant, time and moral decay led to a fruitless spirituality. Despite their outward observance of the Law, their hearts were far from God.In today’s Gospel, Jesus was hungry as He left Bethany and journeyed toward Jerusalem. Along the way, He saw a fig tree from a distance with leaves, so He went to it to pick a fig to eat, but He found none. He immediately said to the tree, “May no one ever eat of your fruit again!” (Mark 11:14). This was a prophetic action. The green tree symbolized the outward appearance of the people of Israel and especially the religious leaders, who appeared righteous but bore no fruit of genuine faith, repentance, or divinely inspired charity.After arriving at the Temple in Jerusalem, Jesus drove out those buying and selling, overturning the tables of the moneychangers who were desecrating the sacredness of the Temple. As He did so, He recalled the prophecies of Isaiah and Jeremiah: “Is it not written: ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples’? But you have made it a den of thieves” (Mark 11:17; cf. Isaiah 56:7; Jeremiah 7:11). Just as the barren fig tree symbolized fruitless spirituality, the cleansing of the temple revealed the corruption of worship that failed to honor God. Both acts were prophetic judgments against the emptiness of external religiosity, warning that God desires not outward appearances but true worship and spiritual fruitfulness from the heart.The next morning, on their way back to Jerusalem, Jesus and His disciples passed by the fig tree Jesus had cursed. To their amazement, it had “withered to its roots.” This sign of judgment sparked a conversation between Jesus and His disciples in which He taught them about the connection between faith, prayer, and forgiveness: “Have faith in God…I tell you, all that you ask for in prayer, believe that you will receive it and it shall be yours…When you stand to pray, forgive anyone against whom you have a grievance…” (Mark 11:22; 24–25). Faith in God, combined with humble prayer and forgiveness, is the key to spiritual fruitfulness.Jesus’ prophetic action and teaching on prayer and forgiveness ring as true for us today as they did for the people of Israel. Read OnlineAs Jesus was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a sizable crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus, sat by the roadside begging. On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.” And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he kept calling out all the more, “Son of David, have pity on me.” Mark 10:46–48Though the Torah commanded kindness and justice toward the blind, they were often treated poorly by the wider community. Unable to work or provide for themselves, the blind were typically reduced to begging. They also bore the stigma of being seen as suffering God’s judgment, whether for their own sins or the sins of their parents. While today’s story about Bartimaeus vividly illustrates the pitiful social and economic position of the blind at that time, it even more powerfully presents him as an ideal model to imitate.First, we should humbly see ourselves in Bartimaeus. On a spiritual level, we are all blind and in need of God’s mercy. Like Bartimaeus, we must identify as people who are poor, ostracized, and incapable of seeing all that God wants to reveal to us. Pride gives us a false sense of who we are and blinds us to the truth of our spiritual poverty. Humility, on the other hand, opens the eyes of faith, enabling us to recognize our need for God’s mercy and His healing grace so that we may see and understand life as He wishes to reveal it.Bartimaeus is not only a model of the humility we need; he is also a model of faith and prayer. In his humility, as soon as he heard that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by, he cried out in a twofold way. First, he called Jesus the “Son of David.” This was a profession of faith in Jesus as the Messiah. “Son of David” was a messianic title rooted in Nathan’s prophecy, in which God promised King David that his descendant would establish an everlasting kingdom (cf. 2 Samuel 7:12–16). By calling Jesus the “Son of David,” Bartimaeus professed his belief that Jesus was the fulfillment of that prophecy.With his profession of faith, Bartimaeus also prayed the ideal prayer: “Have pity on me.” The word “pity” is a translation of the Greek eleison, which is also rendered as “have mercy.” For example, at Mass, we pray in Greek, “Kyrie eleison,” or “Lord, have mercy.” This prayer is ideal because every gift from God is an act of mercy. We do not earn or deserve His grace; it is a freely bestowed gift, and our prayer should reflect this profound truth.As Bartimaeus prayed, many people told him to be silent. Despite their rebukes, Bartimaeus intensified his prayer, “calling out all the more.” This persistence serves as another model for the ideals of prayer. Read Online“Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death and hand him over to the Gentiles who will mock him, spit upon him, scourge him, and put him to death, but after three days he will rise.” Mark 10:33–34How often do we fail to grasp the suffering of others, consumed instead by our own concerns? This was the struggle of the Twelve as Jesus prepared to endure His Passion. Today’s Gospel presents the third time Jesus clearly told them about His Passion and Death, yet they still didn’t get it.After Jesus revealed His Passion for the first time, “Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.” In the presence of the other disciples, Jesus responded, “Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do” (cf. Mark 8:31–33). The second time Jesus revealed His Passion they “did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to question him.” Instead, they engaged in a childish conversation, “discussing among themselves on the way who was the greatest” (cf. Mark 9:30–37).Today’s Gospel, presenting the third time Jesus revealed His Passion, depicts a similar scenario. Jesus is very explicit: In Jerusalem, He “will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death and hand him over to the Gentiles who will mock him, spit upon him, scourge him, and put him to death, but after three days he will rise.” Once again, despite the seriousness of Jesus’ revelation, James and John immediately ask Jesus, “Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left” (Mark 10:37). The Apostles were so consumed with their own ambitions that they failed to grasp the gravity of Jesus’ words and were unable to offer Him the charity of empathy.Fortunately for them—and for us—Jesus had perfect patience. He understood their weaknesses and showed mercy. Humanly speaking, the disciples could have offered Him the charity of human empathy and compassion, walking more firmly with Jesus toward His agony and death, but they were unprepared and unable to do so.While the Apostles failed to console Jesus, His mother consoled His Sacred Heart. With her Immaculate Heart in perfect union with His, the Blessed Mother modeled perfect empathy as she pondered her Son’s life in her heart and stood faithfully at the foot of the Cross. She walked with Jesus every step of the way. Her love consoled Him even as the Twelve failed to do so. The Blessed Mother teaches us how to accompany, with love and presence, those who suffer.We must see ourselves in the Apostles, listening to Jesus share news of His Passion. As we consider their apathy and lack of understanding, we should seek the grace of a
Read OnlinePeter began to say to Jesus, “We have given up everything and followed you.” Mark 10:28Peter had just witnessed Jesus’ conversation with the rich young man, to whom Jesus said, “Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me” (Mark 10:21). After the young man went away sad because he had many possessions, Jesus turned to the disciples and lovingly explained the radical demands of the Gospel: “It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God” (Mark 10:25). This statement was astonishing to the disciples, and Peter’s response reveals a common tendency for us all: He began to think about himself.The Gospel can be embraced in two ways. First, with a more intellectual approach, we can study, understand, and explain Jesus’ teaching. This is important, especially for preachers and teachers. The second way is more challenging: We must hear the Gospel, believe it, and, with the help of grace, live it. When engaging the Gospel in this second way, we often do exactly what Peter did: We think about ourselves and whether or not we live up to it.Both approaches are necessary. Understanding the Gospel intellectually is a crucial starting point. Too often, we water it down to an exhortation to be kind to others, say some daily prayers, go to church, and avoid serious sin. Those who intensely study the Word of God, however, will discover so much more. Jesus’ many teachings, when clearly understood, will challenge even the greatest saint to greater holiness. Even those who “have given up everything” to follow Jesus will be challenged as they are confronted with the depth of our Lord’s Word.Once we understand the radical demands of the Gospel, we must do what Peter did: We must apply it to our particular situation. This introspection is good and necessary and is a sign that the Gospel is sinking in. Like Peter, we might at first justify ourselves, saying, “I have given up everything to follow You, Lord.” But we must then look deeper, more honestly at ourselves, and evaluate our lives in the clearest way possible.Jesus’ response to Peter is the response He makes to us as we go through this self-evaluation, even if it tends to be more of a self-justification. Jesus gently explains that those who radically follow Him without reserve, giving up “everything” to follow Him, will receive two blessings.First, they will receive “a hundred times more now in this present age.” This is not a promise of riches, material prosperity, good health, or freedom from suffering, which Jesus emphasizes by His follow-up statement: “with persecutions.” However, it does mean that the spiritual blessings we will receive in this life, if we r

When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home. John 19:25–27Yesterday, we celebrated the great Solemnity of Pentecost, commemorating the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the first disciples and the birth of the Church. Just as God “breathed” life into Adam at the creation, so the Holy Spirit, the Breath of God, gives new life to the Church, the Body of Christ. At Pentecost, the Blessed Virgin Mary was present, embodying the Gift of Fortitude in her unwavering trust in God’s plan.Fortitude, one of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, strengthens us to persevere in doing good, especially amid trials, suffering, or temptation. It acts as an anchor, holding us steady during life’s storms and uniting us more deeply to the Mystery of the Cross.When this memorial was instituted in 2018, Cardinal Robert Sarah beautifully reminded us that “the Christian life must be anchored to the Mystery of the Cross, to the oblation of Christ in the Eucharistic Banquet, and to the Mother of the Redeemer and Mother of the Redeemed….” Today, we honor her not only as the Mother of the Redeemer but also as our Mother—the Mother of the Redeemed. What a profound gift it is to share a spiritual mother with the Son of God! Through her maternal care and intercession, she leads us to her Son and strengthens us on our journey of faith. During this appearance, Jesus conferred on them the authority to forgive sins, a power foundational to the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This gift anticipates the fuller outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, when the Apostles were empowered to carry out their mission with boldness and divine strength.By breathing on the Apostles, Jesus recalls the creation account in Genesis, when God breathed life into Adam (Genesis 2:7). Now Christ, the New Adam, breathes new life—the divine life of grace—into His Apostles. While this breathing conveys the Holy Spirit in an anticipatory manner, Pentecost represents the full bestowal of the Spirit upon the Church, sanctifying and empowering the Apostles and all disciples.Our knowledge of Pentecost comes to us from the Acts of the Apostles, Luke’s continuation of his Gospel in which he details the beginning of the Church: “And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Saint Thomas Aquinas distinguishes between curiosity, the disordered pursuit of knowledge, and studiousness, a moral virtue that directs our natural desire for knowledge toward good and necessary ends. He describes studiousness as a form of temperance for the mind—a habit that moderates and orders our desire for knowledge so that it serves truth, virtue, and ultimately, God’s glory.The desire for knowledge becomes disordered when it serves no good purpose, distracts us from our duties, or stems from pride, sensual desire, or an unhealthy fascination with evil. It is also disordered when worldly knowledge dominates our minds, drawing us away from God and spiritual matters. For example, our world is often flooded by shocking and sensational stories. The “world” signifies the societal values, materialism, and secular ideologies that promote a lifestyle contrary to God’s will. The “devil” represents the personal, spiritual adversary who seeks to lead us astray through deception, lies, and the stirring of sinful desires. These three sources constantly seek to undermine our relationship with God.We are called to resist these temptations and remain firm in faith. This is accomplished by relying on grace to silence these sources. The flesh is subdued and moderated by the virtue of temperance, the devil is overcome as we discern the voice of God, and the world is overcome by seeking the true glory to which we are called. Among these, He referred to Himself as the Good Shepherd, the Bread of Life, the Light of the World, the True Vine, and Living Water. However, during the Last Supper, Jesus speaks clearly and openly, without the veiled language they were accustomed to. He speaks of the Father’s love for them, His imminent departure and return to the Father, and how He would send the Holy Spirit—the Spirit of Truth—to guide them into all truth.As the Apostles listened to Jesus speak plainly, they rejoiced in a newfound clarity, indicating that their faith had reached a deeper level. At this pivotal moment, just hours before Jesus’ arrest and Passion, their new insight must have amazed even them: “Now we realize that you know everything…we believe that you came from God.”This new level of understanding was just the beginning of a journey that would lead them deeper into all Truth in the years to come. He did this, in part, because He knew they would be traumatized by His Passion—and indeed, they were.In each of our lives, we find a similar pattern. As we learn to pray, meditate on the Gospels, and study divine truths, we are encouraged as we begin to realize the treasure we have discovered. We might then experience a moment of clarity, sensing God speaking directly to us. When that happens, it’s easy to assume that everything in life will immediately be easier. Yet the Cross often comes next. Like the Apostles, we might stumble, become confused or fearful, and scatter.The lesson taught by the Apostles is one we must grasp. When we are gifted with spiritual insights and consolations, finding that life and God’s Word make more sense, we must remember that these consolations and moments of clarity must deepen. It marks a transition from the conclusion of Jesus’ public ministry to His Passion and glorification. With His teaching completed, Jesus begins His prayerful offering of His life to the Father. The prayer can be divided into three sections:Verses 1–11a: Jesus’ intimate prayer to the Father focuses on their mutual glorification through the completion of His sacrifice. This “hour” of sacrifice and glory is now at hand.Verses 11b–19: Jesus prays for the disciples who accompanied Him during His earthly ministry, asking for their protection, sanctification, and perseverance in their mission.Verses 20–26: Jesus’ prayer extends to all future believers, the Church throughout time, including us today. He prays for unity among believers, rooted in the love of the Father and the Son.Today, in liturgical Year A, we read the first section of this prayer, when Jesus speaks of His divine mission and His imminent return to the glory He shared with the Father before creation. This prayer highlights a central theme in John’s Gospel: Jesus’ “hour.”The theme of the “hour” was introduced at the wedding at Cana, the beginning of Jesus’ signs. When the Blessed Mother intercedes for the couple, saying, “They have no wine,” Jesus replies, “Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come” (John 2:3–4). From that moment, Jesus references the concept of His “hour” throughout His ministry, pointing to the appointed time for His Passion and glorification. In today’s High Priestly Prayer, Jesus makes His final and definitive reference to His hour: “Father, the hour has come…” (John 17:1). The hour of His sacrifice, the pinnacle of His earthly mission, has now arrived. Though Jesus was fully aware of the suffering He was about to endure, He did not enter into that suffering with dread or fear. Rather, He did so with eager resolve, knowing that everything He had done throughout His life and public ministry pointed to this moment, which had finally come.Jesus’ human disposition while praying at this pivotal moment offers us an invitation to approach His Sacrifice in the way He did. His “hour” continues in our lives every time we are invited to embrace His Cross. Jesus informs the disciples, “Until now you have not asked anything in my name…” He highlights this to ensure they understand what awaits them: praying in His name will bring about complete joy: “Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.”Complete joy is not a fleeting emotion or the satisfaction of earthly desires. It is the deep and abiding happiness that flows from union with God, the fulfillment of our deepest longings. This joy is rooted in the very life of the Trinity, which we begin to share when we enter into a relationship with the Father through Christ. It is a foretaste of the eternal joy of heaven, where our love for God will find its perfection.Though every rational person desires this joy, we often extinguish it in our hearts by choosing sin. Sin deceives us into believing it will bring happiness, but it ultimately separates us from the source of true joy—God Himself. Jesus instructs us that to receive this joy, we must ask for it in His name. But what does it mean to pray in His name? Jesus provides the answer: “On that day you will ask in my name, and I do not tell you that I will ask the Father for you. For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have come to believe that I came from God” (John 16:26–27).Praying in Jesus’ name means loving Jesus by believing that He is God and treating Him as God. This is authentic prayer. It is an act of divine worship of the Son of God. Worship is the highest form of love because it acknowledges Jesus not only as our Savior but as our God. Worship goes beyond charity and is the form of love owed uniquely to God. This worship transforms us, drawing us into the Son’s perfect relationship with the Father. But I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.” John 16:21–22When we live fully united to Christ, we can endure anguish with confidence and determination. Without Christ, even small, temporary trials become so burdensome that we tend to avoid them. Though trials are not desirable in themselves, God permits them to strengthen us in virtue and prepare us for eternity. The anguish that accompanies them is temporary, but the victory over them is eternal. If we refuse to endure the temporary, we risk losing the eternal.Our Gospel illustrates this point well. The purpose of pregnancy is to cooperate with God’s creative power and to bring forth into the world a precious new soul who will exist for all eternity. What a joy it is for parents to learn of their pregnancy, endure the nine months and the labor, hold their newborn child, and accompany that child throughout life and into Heaven.In order to give birth to that child, the woman must endure labor pains. These pains are not desirable or sought for their own sake, but a woman willingly endures them as a necessary condition for the great joy of new life. Afterward, a loving mother does not regret having a baby because the labor was painful. The joy of holding her newborn is so rewarding that it puts the pain in perspective.Just as a woman willingly endures labor pains for the joy of new life, we too must embrace temporary trials to receive eternal blessings. Trials are a consequence of Original Sin. In the beginning, God did not will that trials would be part of our lives. After the Fall, many forms of trials entered human existence. To enable us to overcome these trials, the Son of God took on flesh and overcame everything we endure. Therefore, when we face trials, God looks at us and invites us to follow His example: to carry our crosses with His strength, to do what He already did.When Jesus told His Apostles, “So you also are now in anguish,” He was speaking not only to them but also to us. Jesus was fully aware of the anguish the Apostles would endure through His coming Passion, and He is fully aware of every anguish we will endure. His awareness is active, offering hope: “I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.” This is His promise to each of us as we confidently endure the trials of life. Acts 1:24–26Matthias, the saint we honor today, was named an Apostle to replace Judas Iscariot after Judas betrayed Jesus and hanged himself. Matthias was likely from Galilee and had followed Jesus from the beginning of His public ministry. After Judas’ death, Peter led the approximately 120 disciples in selecting Matthias through prayer and casting lots, ensuring the Apostles once again numbered twelve. This election occurred before Pentecost, so Matthias received the Holy Spirit alongside the other Apostles, affirming the Twelve as the foundational body of the Church.Matthias’ selection is profoundly important for two primary reasons. First, by being counted along with the other eleven Apostles, the group once again numbered twelve. Though there are thousands of bishops today, the foundation began with twelve. Once they received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and began their apostolic ministries, their number grew as the Church expanded. Nonetheless, the foundation remained, symbolizing the Twelve Tribes of Israel and uniting the New Testament Church with the Old Covenant.Second, Matthias’ election establishes a biblical foundation for apostolic succession, one of the four marks of the Church: “I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church” (Nicene Creed). By proclaiming the Church as “one,” we affirm that there is only one Church—“the one Church of Christ” (Vatican II, Lumen Gentium 8). These are Jesus’ parting words as He stands on the Mount of the Ascension, the final words recorded in Matthew’s Gospel. They are powerful words by which Jesus entrusts extraordinary responsibility to eleven of His closest companions. Their mission was not merely to gain new followers but to proclaim the Gospel to every nation. Additionally, they were to baptize all nations and teach them everything Jesus had commanded.This incredible task would have seemed daunting, if not impossible. Yet it is grounded in divine authority: “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore…” These are not mere words of encouragement but a divine command, rooted in the authority entrusted to Jesus by the Father. With this declaration, Jesus equips the Apostles with the grace to fulfill their mission, knowing they act under His authority.The Ascension marks a fundamental transition in salvation history. Before the Incarnation, God established covenants with His people and sent prophets to call them to fidelity and prepare them for the coming of the Messiah. With Jesus’ Incarnation, a new era of salvation history began. Through His Passion and Resurrection, Jesus opened the floodgates of grace and inaugurated the final phase of God’s eternal plan. This phase continues today and will only reach its fulfillment when Christ returns in glory to judge the living and the dead and establish the new Heaven and new Earth. Because we live in this final phase of salvation history, Jesus’ words to His Apostles also apply to us. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth.” John 16:12–13Even Jesus’ closest companions, who spent three years with Him during His public ministry, could not bear the fullness of Truth without the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth. This is a significant reminder for us, who did not have the privilege of walking with Jesus during His earthly ministry.Imagine those three years: the disciples witnessed miracle after miracle, listened to sermon after sermon, and enjoyed intimate conversations with Jesus. Just being in His presence, observing how He interacted with others, must have been profoundly inspiring. Yet, even those formative years did not prepare them to bear all that Jesus wished to reveal.This shows us that understanding the fullness of Truth goes far beyond human capacity. Only through the supernatural gift of the Holy Spirit can we comprehend the deepest mysteries of faith.What happens to a soul who receives the Holy Spirit and is guided into “all truth?” That soul is transformed. The natural soul gives way to a supernaturally elevated soul, becoming a new creation in Christ. But this transformation requires something essential: the old self must die. We must surrender our fallen nature to receive the new life Christ offers. This requires great sacrifice because we must let go of our old ways and embrace God’s grace. But every sacrifice that leads to a life transformed by divine truth is worth it.Recall Jesus’ teaching: “No one pours new wine into old wineskins…New wine must be poured into fresh wineskins” (Luke 5:37–38). For us to become fresh wineskins, ready to receive the new wine of God’s grace, we must allow the Holy Spirit to change us. This transformation might be startling at times. As the Spirit works within us, opening our eyes to truths we could never imagine, we begin to bear those truths that previously seemed unbearable. This leads to wonder, awe, and praise of God.Consider the example of Saint Stephen, the Church’s first martyr. When Stephen spoke, the corrupt religious leaders “could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he spoke” (Acts 6:10). He didn’t rely on years of education or human effort to gain knowledge; instead, the Spirit of Truth lived in him and spoke through him. The death of a loved one, the loss of a job, and a serious illness are a few of many immediate causes of grief. Jesus addresses the grief the disciples were experiencing as they listened to Him explain that He was going to the One Who sent Him, to the Father: “But because I told you this, grief has filled your hearts.”It’s easy to relate to the disciples’ grief. Imagine that you find out that your best friend is moving to another state. You would have a deep sense of loss upon hearing the news. This is what the disciples were experiencing. The closeness they shared with Jesus was profoundly consoling to them. In Him, they learned so much and began to understand the purity and power of divine love, likely for the first time. The news of His departure filled them with grief.Emotions are neither good nor bad; they are natural reactions to perceived goods or evils. The disciples’ initial perception of Jesus’ earthly departure was as an undesirable loss, so they felt grief. Jesus, fully understanding human nature, addressed their grief with great empathy. Simply identifying what they were feeling would have been a comfort to them. But Jesus goes further: “But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go. For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.”At Jesus’ words, the disciples might have experienced the beginnings of hope, but they did not fully understand. Only after Jesus left them, ascended to the Father, and sent the Holy Spirit at Pentecost did they begin to understand. And only after living with the presence of the Holy Spirit in their lives for some time did they more fully comprehend the depth of this promise. This reflects our own spiritual journey; it takes time and openness for the wisdom of God’s plan to unfold in our lives.Whenever we face grief or confusion, we would benefit from pondering this exchange between Jesus and the disciples. Romans 8:28 tells us, “We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.” That means “all things,” not just some things. And you also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.” John 15:26–27The Last Supper Discourse spans from Chapters 13–17 in John’s Gospel, making it Jesus’ longest continuous teaching in the Gospels. While Chapter 13 begins with Jesus washing the disciples’ feet and teaching humility, it also introduces the promise of the Holy Spirit, the Advocate. Today’s Gospel begins a deeper teaching on the role of the Holy Spirit, a theme we will explore further as we approach the Solemnity of Pentecost in less than two weeks.The role of the Holy Spirit in this passage is twofold. First, the Holy Spirit is identified as the Spirit of Truth Who will testify to the disciples on Jesus’ behalf. To testify is to bear witness to the truth. A witness in a court of law testifies under oath to safeguard the truthfulness of his or her statement. Even more so, the Holy Spirit’s testimony, spoken deep within the conscience of every soul aligned with God’s will, brings with it moral certitude. When the Holy Spirit speaks, we know what He says is true. This is how we arrive at the certitude of faith in Jesus as our Savior and in the truthfulness of all He taught.Second, Jesus says, “You also testify.” The Holy Spirit not only testifies to Jesus but also equips the disciples to give testimony about Him to the world. This testimony, as Jesus explains, will not be without cost: “They will expel you from the synagogues; in fact, the hour is coming when everyone who kills you will think he is offering worship to God” (John 16:2). Jesus warns His disciples of this coming hostility so they “may not fall away.” The Holy Spirit will enable them to testify courageously, even in the face of persecution. This assurance was essential for the early Church and remains vital for believers today as we navigate a world often resistant to the Gospel.The testimony we must give as Christians is rooted in proclaiming the Truth: Jesus is the one and only way to the Father. He alone offers the forgiveness of sins and the gift of salvation. Without turning to Him, we cannot be saved.In addition to this central message, we must testify to the supporting truths of our faith through both word and action. Faithful attendance at Mass is essential. Confession restores us to grace. Daily prayer draws us closer to God. Mortal sin destroys our union with Him, and Hell is a sobering reality. Those with close families are truly blessed, as a supportive family fosters personal growth and a sense of identity. When one is orphaned, the absence of these natural bonds can leave a lasting sense of loss. Yet even the strongest earthly family relationships point to a greater truth: our ultimate belonging is found in God’s family.Jesus understood the sense of loss His disciples would feel after His Passion, Resurrection, and Ascension. When He said, “In a little while the world will no longer see me…” He was preparing them for His physical departure through the Ascension. But He reassures them: “I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you…you will see me, because I live and you will live.”Initially, the disciples struggled to grasp the meaning of these words. Only after the outpouring of the Holy Spirit did they begin to understand. The same promise Jesus made to them applies to us today. Though we were not among those who witnessed His earthly presence, we too have a longing for His nearness—a longing to belong, to be loved, and to find our place within a family. This longing is fulfilled supernaturally through the gift of faith and our incorporation into God’s divine family, the Church.Faith is the key to this relationship. It is more than intellectual belief; it is the acceptance of a personal revelation from God and a choice to live according to that revelation. Jesus promises that those who love Him and obey His commandments will experience His presence and that of the Father. This experience begins through faith, which is a gift by which God communicates Himself to us, revealing His love and will. It is both certain and mysterious, a knowledge that leads us to divine hope and sustains us in the pursuit of God’s will.Faith also unites us with one another. Through faith, we are no longer orphans but brothers and sisters in Christ. Our natural longing to belong finds its ultimate fulfillment in God’s glorious family, which begins on earth and is perfected in Heaven.Reflect today on the desire in your heart to belong, to be loved, and to be part of a family. Yet our Lord makes it very clear that because He has “chosen you out of the world, the world hates you.” He doesn’t say that the world “might” hate you or that you “might” suffer some injustice. He declares that those whom He has chosen out of the world will be hated by the world. This is one of the paradoxes of our faith: Living in Christ brings love from Him but hatred and persecution from the world. Yet this hatred is a sign of a deeper reality: We are no longer bound by the fleeting values of this fallen world but are participants in God’s eternal Kingdom, where peace and true freedom are found.The “world” in this context is not Creation itself. All that God created is good. The world represents the fallen spiritual order, caught up in sin. Those who “belong to the world” are those who conform to diabolical values, such as seeking power for power’s sake, wealth as a selfish means to fulfillment, or carnal indulgence in an attempt to satiate oneself. Living in accord with the values of the fallen world is foolishness. It leads to a superficial life that cannot ultimately satisfy our deeper spiritual cravings and shares in the envy and hatred of the demons.Breaking free of worldly attachments is difficult at first because those who have become worldly are blinded by their disordered desires. Sin is a slippery slope. Compromising even in small ways to gain acceptance risks losing clarity of purpose and rootedness in Christ. The more people sin, the more miserable they become, and the more miserable they become, the more they seek satisfaction from sin. Only when that cycle is broken does peace begin to take hold and freedom is found. Yet, in the midst of this struggle to detach from worldly illusions, Jesus offers a profound truth: “I have chosen you out of the world.”To be chosen by Christ is to be set apart for a life of divine purpose and eternal fulfillment. This call draws us into communion with Him, transforming suffering into a path to glory. The disciples’ identity is not self-made but rooted in His choice. This divine election sets them apart for a mission that challenges the temptation to worldly ambitions. Their call to holiness and truth inevitably provokes hostility because it shines a light on the darkness of the world’s sin and draws others to conversion. I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father.” John 15:13–15Is it possible to know everything that Jesus knows? Certainly not. Yet, Jesus says in today’s Gospel, “I have told you everything I have heard from my Father.” Jesus Himself is the full revelation of the Father. Therefore, in Him we have been given perfect access to the life of God. Even though God has revealed everything to us, we are limited in our ability to receive it because we are finite creatures. Nonetheless, our imperfect natures do not limit what Jesus has told us from the Father.By analogy, consider water. When we are thirsty, we drink a glass of water. If we are very thirsty, we might drink several glasses. However, we are limited in how much water we can consume in one sitting. All that Jesus has revealed to us from the Father is like an infinite ocean of grace. He doesn’t offer us only one glass or even several. He offers us the ocean. Though He bestows it on us fully, we are limited in what we can receive by our finite nature and sin.The goal of the Christian life is not to take one “sip” or “glass” of grace. Our goal is to continuously increase our capacity for receptivity. The greatest of saints spent their lives doing so. The more grace they received, the greater their capacity, and the greater their capacity, the more they received. Saint Teresa of Ávila described this process as progressing through the “mansions” of the interior castle, with each step drawing the soul closer to union with God. Saint John of the Cross taught that detachment from worldly attachments and the purification of the soul increase our receptivity to God’s grace. Saint Thomas Aquinas explained that the theological virtues, especially charity, expand the soul’s capacity for divine love.The presence of grace in any soul ensures that the soul will attain Heaven upon death. However, the level of glory that each will experience for eternity is determined by how much the soul’s capacity for grace expands in this life. This capacity is built through love. Jesus teaches, “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” The love of charity is the process by which we lay down our lives for others. Jesus is not only the source of such love, He is also the Model. Perfect love has no bounds, and experiencing it would be the source of indescribable joy. Now imagine further that the one who loves you is all-powerful and all-knowing. When combined with being all-loving, there is no limit to what such a relationship can do in your life.Of course, we do not need to only imagine such a love; we can receive that love from God. Jesus’ words are deep, personal, and intimate: “As the Father loves me, so I also love you.” His love for you is not conditional, limited, or selfish. When He says to you, “I love you,” He means it with every power of His divine soul. Jesus beautifully describes His love for us: “As the Father loves me…” The love the Father has for the Son is so deep, perfect, and all-consuming that we cannot fully comprehend it, even in Heaven. For all eternity, we will gaze with wonder and awe at this shared love and never tire of contemplating it. What’s more, the love between Father and Son is so strong that it cannot be contained within Themselves. Their love overflows in superabundance, pouring out upon us, inviting us to enjoy perfect fulfillment within it.Jesus’ next words are both an invitation and a command: “Remain in my love.” God’s love for us is far more than an emotion or affectionate concern. His love is a gift of His very Self, drawing us into communion with Him. To “remain” in His love means to live, move, and exist in His presence. Divine love is transforming, enduring, and life-changing. It unites us to the divine Lover and establishes the life-giving communion for which we were made.After inviting us to remain in His love, Jesus clarifies how we can receive His ongoing and transformative gift: “If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in His love.” At first, these words might seem challenging, especially when we consider our fallen nature and tendency toward pride. Yet they only feel burdensome if we misunderstand His commandments.In order to fully embrace Jesus’ commandments, we need to see them for what they are: expressions of pure love gushing forth from the shared love of the Father and the Son. Yet, too often, we try to bear fruit of our own making. Truly good fruit can only come forth if we remain in Christ, for He is the source of all good fruit in our lives.Bearing good fruit, meaning performing good works, does not save us by itself. Salvation is a gift of grace through Christ. However, good works, as fruits of grace, reveal the depth of our union with Him and are necessary expressions of a life transformed by God’s love. Just as a healthy vine naturally produces abundant grapes, so too does a soul united to Christ bear abundant spiritual fruit for the glory of God and the good of others. This fruit, above all, is charity—the eternal gift that reflects the presence of Christ in us and draws others to Him.By analogy, a grapevine produces good grapes when it is healthy and well-nourished. A diseased or poorly nourished vine will produce useless grapes. If we want to make a difference in the world and in the lives of others, we have only one choice: We must remain firmly attached to our Lord, living in Him as He lives in us, so that the spiritual nourishment He provides will produce an abundance of grace in and through us.Consider the people whom you love. If you could do anything for them, what might it be? You might wish to alleviate all their sufferings, such as a chronic illness, financial struggle, or some heavy cross they bear. While such desires reflect our care for them, even the greatest worldly comforts pale in comparison to the spiritual blessings of faith and divine grace. The greatest good we can do for others is to allow God to use us as instruments of His love, inspiring faith and leading them closer to Him.The best way to make a difference in others’ lives is to first care for our own souls by ensuring we are united to our Lord. We must pray daily, seeking ways to deepen and extend our time of prayer. We must be faithful to the Commandments, regularly attend Mass, celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation, meditate on and read the Scriptures, familiarize ourselves with the lives of the saints, and know the teachings of Christ’s Church. All of this is for two purposes: First, it transforms us and more fully unites us with God. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.” John 14:27There are two types of peace we can enjoy. First, there is worldly peace. This peace is the absence of conflict, war, or external turmoil. Civil governments must work to ensure this peace by protecting their societies from outside aggressors, maintaining order within their communities, and assisting with basic human needs, such as economic development, healthcare, and justice. This form of peace aligns with human reason and is based in the natural law, which is written on the consciences of every person.Though that form of natural peace and justice is good, it is not the highest form of peace we are called to enjoy. The peace that our Lord came to bestow is supernatural, enabling us not only to survive, but to thrive on a moral and spiritual level, even in the absence of worldly peace. Jesus’ spiritual gift of peace enables us to find fulfillment in the midst of every external difficulty.If we seek only worldly peace, then any difficulty or disorder will trouble and unsettle our hearts. For that reason, Jesus said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.” Wars, oppression, crime, poverty, and disease have plagued humanity from the beginning and will persist, in varying degrees, until the end of time. Only when Jesus returns to establish His visible Kingdom as the Universal King will external peace be fully and permanently established. What a glorious day that will be!For now, until the Second Coming, we must learn not only to survive but to thrive within the world. Given the inevitable challenges every human life will encounter, if we want to live in true peace then we must seek out the peace that our Lord promises in today’s Gospel. This Gospel comes from Jesus’ Last Supper Discourse with His Apostles. As that discourse concludes two chapters later, Jesus prays His High Priestly prayer to the Father: “I do not ask that you take them out of the world but that you keep them from the evil one” (John 17:15). We must live within this fallen world for now, but we do not have to suffer interior afflictions.The evil one has great influence in this world, yet our Lord promises that if we receive His peace, we will be kept safe from the devil’s attacks. Though we might suffer some form of external oppression, internally we will be at peace, no matter what we face.The gift of peace that Jesus promises confounds the powers of darkness and is freely given to all who turn to Him and submit to His spiritual governance. Whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him.” John 14:21Most people would not think of “love” as obedience to commandments. Yet, that is precisely how Jesus defines it. To understand the truthfulness of His teaching, we must first consider the nature of love.Saint Thomas Aquinas defines love as both an emotion and an action. As an emotion, it is part of our human nature and is the first response of the concupiscible appetite to a good perceived as desirable. This natural love is directed toward goods apprehended through the senses, such as food, people, or enjoyable activities. Since love as an emotion pertains to the sensory appetite and is tied to physical or sensible goods, it plays an essential role in the human experience. However, it’s important to note that just because a good is perceived as desirable does not mean it is truly good for us or in accord with God’s perfect will.The love that Jesus speaks of in today’s Gospel, however, far transcends natural love. While it does involve desire and emotion when perfected, it is ultimately charity—a supernatural, spiritual love flowing from our union with Him. Charity, infused by grace, elevates love to a higher, rational act of the will, seeking the good of another for the other’s sake and fulfilling God’s commandments as an expression of that love.This distinction invites us to examine the type of love we have toward God and others. If our love for God is purely emotional, it will be dictated by superficial and sometimes misguided desires. When we feel consolation on an emotional level, we might respond with an emotionally loving sentiment toward God. When something inspires us and we feel His presence, we might desire Him intensely. Yet, while this form of love has its place and will play a role in our relationship with God when our soul is fully perfected, it is initially a poor guide to charity. The same principle applies to our relationships with others.Sometimes the pure love of charity hurts on a natural level. The demands of charity often call us to act contrary to our immediate desires and to love even when we do not feel like loving. Earlier in Chapter 14 of John’s Gospel, Jesus expresses the ideal of charity even more clearly: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15). At the very heart of charity toward God is obedience. This obedience involves a three-fold process.First, with our minds, we must understand God’s will, believe it, and assent to it as the highest good, even if our disordered appetites initially resist His will. In this discourse, Jesus explains, in veiled form, that He will soon ascend into Heaven where He will prepare a place for His followers. He explains that because they know Him, they know the way to where He is going—the way to the Father—because He Himself is that Way. As Jesus spoke these mysterious truths, we can imagine the Twelve listening attentively, yet with confusion.Everything Jesus taught was true. His words, recorded in the Gospels, reveal to us the deepest divine mysteries. Within the Scriptures, we find all we need to know to attain perfect holiness and the eternal life of Heaven. Yet we cannot quickly digest Jesus’ words as we might an intriguing novel or history book. There are many layers of depth to what He says, and we can only understand those layers through prayer.As the conversation continued, “Philip said to him, ‘Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?’” (John 14:8–9).Jesus’ response likely surprised Philip and the other disciples because they did not understand what He was saying. Their intention was good—they wanted to understand—but Jesus’ words were more than they could comprehend at that moment. Despite this, Jesus gently rebuked Philip as a way of drawing him deeper into the mystery He was revealing.God often treats us the same way. There are many things that we do not understand. Why do innocent people suffer? Why doesn’t God heal my loved one in answer to my prayers? Why do my children no longer practice the faith? What am I supposed to do with my life?Just as Philip struggled to understand Jesus’ words, we, too, face moments of confusion when God’s ways seem beyond our grasp. God’s answer to life’s most challenging questions is rarely straightforward or immediate. Why? Because such an approach can never fully satisfy the depth of our hearts. Instead, God reveals a kernel of truth to us and then invites us to ponder it, revealing the divine mystery we seek to understand little by little, to the degree we are open.The answers we seek come only as we

If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it.” John 14:12–14Have you ever prayed repeatedly for something, only to feel your prayer was unanswered? In today’s Gospel, Jesus promises that if we ask anything in His name, He will do it. How do we reconcile unanswered prayers with Jesus’ promise?To pray in Jesus’ name is not a formula that guarantees instant results, as if prayers were magical. Saying “In Jesus’ Name, Amen” with confidence at the end of a prayer does not compel God to grant our requests. Faith is not about convincing ourselves that God will fulfill our desires but about placing our trust in His divine will. To understand Jesus’ promise, “Whatever you ask in my name, I will do” (John 14:13), we must first recognize His perfect unity with the Father. Jesus’ words and works flow entirely from this union, and He invites us to share in this relationship by aligning our will with His and the Father’s will.In John’s Gospel, Jesus began to address His unity with the Father after curing a crippled man on the Sabbath. When the Pharisees questioned Him about it, Jesus responded, “My Father is at work until now, so I am at work” (John 5:17). This infuriated the Jews, who tried to kill Him because He “called God his own father, making himself equal to God” (John 5:18). From that point on, Jesus became increasingly clear about His divine identity and union with the Father, emphasizing that He was sent by the Father, that He and the Father are one, and that everything He spoke and did originated from this unity. When Jesus cured someone, it was because it was His Father’s will. If He didn’t cure someone, it wasn’t because He lacked divine ability; it was because, in the mystery of the Trinity’s perfect wisdom, it wasn’t the will of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God’s will is always perfect and produces the greatest good, even when we do not understand that good.The Son is distinct from the Father, yet there is a perfect communion of being, will, and action. Though we are not God, when Jesus says to His disciples—and to us—“If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it,” He is inviting us to share in the Trinity’s will and action. We do not become divine as the Father and Son are, but we are invited into their union of will and action so that when we speak, it is Christ speaking in and through us. The inspired virtue of hope is much more than wishful thinking. It’s a supernatural gift by which we are strengthened to persevere through challenges, trusting in God’s promises and His fidelity. Hope sustains us, even in the darkest and most painful moments.In today’s Gospel, Jesus offers His disciples—and us—the antidote to fear and uncertainty: hope rooted in faith. His words at the Last Supper are intended to strengthen the Apostles for the sorrowful events of His Passion. Though they did not yet fully understand what was about to unfold, Jesus gave them this loving command: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me.”In the light of the Resurrection, imagine the Apostles reflecting on these words. They would have recalled the confusion and despair they experienced during Jesus’ arrest, crucifixion, and burial. But after encountering the risen Christ, their sorrow turned to joy, and their doubt to unshakable faith. In hindsight, they would have realized they didn’t need to let their hearts be troubled—they should have trusted in His promise.The Apostles’ journey from fear and guilt to hope and strength is a reminder for us all. We, too, can look back on moments when we failed to trust in God during painful times. Despair, one of the most painful human experiences, extinguishes hope and leaves us feeling abandoned. But even in our failures, God is present, ready to transform our weakness into supernatural hope. By humbly confessing our lack of trust, we open our hearts to His healing grace and allow Him to prepare us for future trials.Just as the Apostles grew in hope through their encounter with the risen Christ, so too did Mary, the Mother of Hope, model unwavering faith even in the midst of profound sorrow. Standing at the foot of the Cross, her heart was pierced with sorrow, but she remained firm in faith and trust. Her hope was based on her certainty that God’s plan would be fulfilled through her Son’s Passion. In times of trial, turn to Mary, who will guide you in placing your trust in her Son and in the eternal promises of His love.Reflect today on Jesus’ loving command: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Read OnlineWhen Jesus had washed the disciples’ feet, he said to them: “Amen, amen, I say to you, no slave is greater than his master nor any messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you understand this, blessed are you if you do it.” John 13:16–17Today’s Gospel comes from the Last Supper, just after Jesus washed His disciples’ feet. What an act of humility! By analogy, it would be as if a king knelt before his servants to polish their shoes, setting aside his glory to attend to their most basic needs. This act would teach them that true greatness lies not in power but in love and humble service. Such an act would make quite an impression on those servants, helping them understand their duty within the king’s royal court and their responsibility toward the people of the kingdom.The Apostles might not have understood the full meaning of Jesus’ act of humility that Holy Thursday evening. As time went on, however, and the Apostles embraced their roles as spiritual leaders of the early Church, Jesus’ actions would have become the foundation of their understanding of servant leadership—one that they themselves were called to imitate as shepherds of Christ’s flock. Leadership in the Kingdom of God is not about seeking honors or recognition but about humbling oneself in selfless service to others. This includes not only leaders within the Church, but also leaders within the community and within families.Jesus’ example becomes even more impactful when we consider the presence of Judas at this intimate moment. The Gospel goes on to reveal that Jesus acknowledged that one of those whose feet He washed would betray Him. He served Judas anyway. In this one act, Jesus not only demonstrated humility but also showed that His love knows no boundaries, extending even to those who would reject and betray Him.In our lives, when we encounter those who betray us or sin against us in any way, we are immediately tempted to lash out. Imitating Jesus, however, requires us to humble ourselves even before the worst of sinners, rather than condemn them. Jesus did not approve of Judas’ betrayal. Instead, He identified it by quoting Psalm 41:10: “The one who ate my food has raised his heel against me.” Then, to reassure the remaining disciples of His divine mission, He said: “From now on I am telling you before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe that I AM” (John 13:19).Jesus was essentially saying that once the other eleven Apostles learned of Judas’ betrayal, they would understand that only God—I AM—is capable of humbly loving and serving those who sin against Him. Our faith teaches that those who die in a state of grace will enjoy the Beatific Vision, the clearest and most intense perception of God’s essence and glory. For those still in need of purification, God’s mercy provides the gift of Purgatory, preparing them to gaze upon Him for eternity. In Heaven, all will see God face-to-face and experience perfect happiness in communion with Him and all the saints. But the promise of seeing God does not begin only in Heaven. Through faith, we begin to see Him even now. Do you see the Father?Jesus promises, “Whoever believes in me also believes in the one who sent me, and whoever sees me sees the one who sent me.” On earth, Jesus revealed the Father as “the image of the invisible God” (Colossians 1:15). Though Jesus’ divinity was veiled within His humanity, faith allowed His followers to perceive the Father’s presence through Him. To look upon Jesus was truly to gaze upon God, even if God’s full glory was hidden.Today, after Jesus’ Ascension, His presence remains with us, especially in the Eucharist. Though our senses perceive only bread and wine, faith reveals that we are gazing upon God. As Saint Thomas Aquinas proclaimed in Tantum Ergo, “Faith for all defects supplying, where the feeble senses fail.” When we approach the Eucharist with faith, we see Jesus, and through Him, we see the Father.Beyond the Eucharist, we encounter God’s presence every time we are touched by grace, perform an act of charity, receive the Sacraments, or prayerfully read His Word. God reveals Himself in hidden form through these moments, inviting us to recognize Him with the eyes of faith.Jesus also said, “I came into the world as light, so that everyone who believes in me might not remain in darkness.” The light is perceived in our souls through an interior illumination that assures us of God’s presence and action in our lives. Faith enables us to see His work and know for certain that He is near. Do you see this Light? Do you see the Son, the Father, and the Holy Spirit?Doubt, the opposite of faith, brings darkness into our lives. While doubt is a common human struggle, God invites us to move beyond it. So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long are you going to keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” Jesus answered them, “I told you and you do not believe…” John 10:22–25How often does the Lord speak to us, yet we fail to listen? Like the Jews in today’s Gospel, we might ask, “Lord, tell me plainly Your will!” Jesus responds, “I told you, and you do not listen.” His voice is constant, but we must become attuned to it.Jesus speaks first through Scripture, especially the Gospels. As Saint Jerome reminds us, “Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.” Through Scripture and the teaching of the Magisterium, which safeguards and interprets God’s Word, we receive clarity and direction for every age. At times, the Holy Spirit even illuminates a particular passage to guide us in a specific way.God speaks through the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist and Reconciliation, where His grace cleanses, strengthens, and reveals His will. Prayer, too, is essential. Fidelity to daily prayer deepens our ability to hear God, fostering the silence and trust needed for intimacy with Him. Finally, God speaks through daily life—through others, the beauty of creation, and even our crosses.Despite the abundant ways God speaks to us, distractions, fear, pride, and a lack of trust often prevent us from hearing Him. We may expect God to speak dramatically or on our terms, missing His gentle, consistent voice. But the more we quiet our hearts, immerse ourselves in His Word, and trust in His providence, the more we will hear and follow our divine Shepherd.Jesus goes on to say, “The works I do in my Father’s name testify to me” (John 10:25). Though He was speaking to the Jews about His miracles, the authority of His sermons, and the witness of His sacred life, He says the same to us. Jesus’ works illuminate His Word and will in our lives.If we want to be among Jesus’ sheep, we must hear His voice and follow Him. What’s most consoling about today’s Gospel is that Jesus says of His sheep: “No one can take them out of my hand” (John 10:28). If we do our part in listening and following His voice, His promise is to keep us safe, firmly united with Him. When that happens, nothing can harm us, nothing can steal away our peace, and nothing can keep us from God.Reflect today on how well you listen and are attentive to God’s guiding voice. A hired man, who is not a shepherd and whose sheep are not his own, sees a wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away, and the wolf catches and scatters them. This is because he works for pay and has no concern for the sheep.” John 10:11–13What is it that makes a shepherd “good?” A shepherd’s duties require great sacrifice and time. Like a mother who is always attentive to her newborn, a shepherd devotes his time and energies to the care of his flock. In biblical times, shepherds often lived in caves on the outskirts of towns, where there were plenty of green pastures, space for the sheep to roam, and water sources. The caves provided a place of safety at night and shelter from the elements. During the day, the shepherd watched over the flock in an almost fatherly way, knowing that if he were to neglect his duties and become inattentive, a sheep could wander off or fall victim to a pack of wolves.Jesus expands this familiar image to convey an even greater reality of divine love and sacrifice. In today’s Gospel, Jesus takes this image of a shepherd to a whole new level. He says: “A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” Though this might not have been part of the normal job description of a shepherd, perhaps those who were listening would have made a connection. Some might have understood what Jesus taught in a figurative way, calling to mind the time and commitment shepherds make. And though there is a figurative lesson to be learned, Jesus’ teaching was more than that.Jesus first identified Himself as the Good Shepherd. He then defines what that means: He will lay down His life for His sheep. Though His listeners likely missed His meaning, Saint John, while writing his Gospel, fully understood Jesus’ words to be not only figurative but also literal—Jesus would die on the Cross for the sins of His sheep.The metaphor continues with Jesus contrasting a hired worker with a true shepherd of his own sheep. In the face of danger, a hired worker flees for his own safety, while the shepherd stands and fights for his sheep, even to death. This clearly depicts what Jesus has done for us, but it also reveals our duty toward all of God’s people, His flock.As members of Christ’s Body, the Church, we are called to share in His shepherding mission. Our vocations will especially dictate to us ways in which we are called to do so. Parents, for example, must be so devoted to their children that they value their children’s lives more than their own. Priests and religious are called to be shepherds who guide and protect their flocks spiritually. Each of us, however, must participate in Christ’s shepherding mission in the ways we are called. But they will not follow a stranger; they will run away from him, because they do not recognize the voice of strangers.” John 10:4–5Young children are often frightened by strangers. Infants, for example, form a strong bond with their mothers who feed them, hold them close, talk to them, and lavish love upon them. It often happens that when other family members, such as grandparents or even the father, attempt to hold the child, tears emerge until the child is placed once again in the familiar and safe arms of his or her mother.An infant’s reaction to strangers can teach us much about today’s Gospel on Jesus, the Good Shepherd. Like an infant, sheep become familiar with the voice and presence of their shepherd. The shepherd lives with the sheep night and day. He calls to them, speaks to them, keeps them safe, and leads them to green pastures and water. If a stranger were to call to them, they would not listen, similar to how an infant reacts to a stranger.Jesus’ teaching is in response to the criticism He received from the Pharisees after He healed a man born blind. After healing the man, Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment, so that those who do not see might see, and those who do see might become blind” (John 9:39). When the Pharisees heard Jesus say that, they inquired whether He was suggesting that they were blind, to which Jesus replied, “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you are saying, ‘We see,’ so your sin remains” (John 9:41).An infant’s unfamiliarity with a stranger is instinctive and innocent, yet it teaches us about the deeper spiritual reality Jesus describes. Just as sheep recognize the voice of their shepherd and follow him because they trust in his care, so too does a soul attuned to God respond to His voice. In contrast, the Pharisees, who prided themselves on their religious knowledge, failed to recognize Jesus as the true Shepherd. This failure was not innocent ignorance; it was willful blindness rooted in their rejection of His divine mission. The healed blind man perceived Jesus’ voice with the simplicity of faith, while the Pharisees, claiming to ‘see’ with their own wisdom, remained in sin because they refused to hear and follow the voice of the Good Shepherd.The Pharisees saw Jesus as a stranger to their religious beliefs and practices. They labeled Him an imposter. Unlike the innocent reaction of an infant or the natural response of sheep, the Pharisees’ unfamiliarity with Jesus was a sin stemming from pride. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned. These signs will accompany those who believe…” Mark 16:15–17Today we honor the Gospel writer, Saint Mark. Mark, also called John Mark, was likely from modern-day Libya in North Africa but grew up in Jerusalem with his mother, Mary. Her home was a significant meeting place for early Christians, possibly hosting the Last Supper and Peter’s visit after his release from prison (Acts 12:12). Many scholars believe Mark was the young man who fled naked during Jesus’ arrest (Mark 14:51–52).Mark accompanied Barnabas (his cousin or uncle) and Paul on an early missionary journey but left them before its completion, which led to a sharp disagreement with Paul. Barnabas took Mark to Cyprus, while Paul continued elsewhere. Despite this conflict, Mark and Paul reconciled, and Paul later referred to Mark as a co-worker and a helpful companion during his imprisonment (Colossians 4:10–11; 2 Timothy 4:11).Mark also developed a close relationship with Peter, who affectionately called him “Mark, my son” (1 Peter 5:13). Tradition holds that Mark wrote his Gospel in Rome at Peter’s request, preserving Peter’s preaching for the Church. Whoever eats my Flesh and drinks my Blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my Flesh is true food, and my Blood is true drink.” John 6:53–55Human reason and free will are the most precious natural gifts God gave us. They are what separate us from every other animal. Human reason enables us to think critically, understand concepts, and arrive at conclusions. Central to our human reason is our free will, which enables us to act upon the conclusions we reach or to reject them, choosing instead to follow our disordered appetites and misguided desires. Though human reason was wounded by Original Sin, it was not completely destroyed. We must diligently strive to act rationally and in accord with our common sense, adhering to the natural law that God has written on our souls. However, even though a rational approach to natural law will bring us a long way toward right living, it is not sufficient to lead us into the deeper truths of eternal salvation, promised to us in Jesus’ discourse on the Bread of Life, on which we have been reflecting.By natural reason alone, the Eucharist makes no sense. How could that which appears to be a piece of bread be the “Flesh of the Son of Man” and a cup that appears to be wine be His Blood? Yet when we incorporate divine revelation into our reasoning, the Eucharist as the Flesh and Blood of Jesus, the Son of God, makes perfect sense: “...my Flesh is true food, and my Blood is true drink.” The Eucharist makes sense, but only when we listen with faith to the revelation Jesus gave to us. Today’s Gospel provides the clearest teaching we have ever received on this Precious Gift.Today’s Gospel begins by relating that “The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, ‘How can this man give us his Flesh to eat?’” (John 6:52). They were quarreling because they were not opening their human reason to the light of Jesus’ revealed truth. In this exchange, the Eternal and Incarnate Son of God was speaking a divine truth to them. Jesus spoke clearly and plainly, but their minds remained closed. They heard His words, but they closed themselves off to the Father’s Voice, which testified on Jesus’ behalf that all He said was true. It seems that some who listened began to understand and believe, prompting the quarrel among them.When you read our Lord’s words, what do you hear? Do you hear the Father’s Voice in the depths of your conscience, confirming the truthfulness of what you read? Do you hear the Living Word of God echoing within your mind and soul? Read OnlineJesus said to the crowds: “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day.” John 6:44In today’s Gospel, Jesus continues His conversation with the crowd who sought Him out after performing the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. As the conversation continues, Jesus deepens His clarity about His relationship with the Father, His divine identity, the Father’s action in our lives, and the gift of Himself as the Bread of Life.The passage above reveals an essential spiritual principle we must understand as we work to strengthen our relationship with God: Faith is a response to the Father’s call, not something we initiate on our own. This principle is crucial because faith is not primarily a resolution we make to grow closer to God; rather, it begins as a resolution from the Father in Heaven Who draws us to Himself by drawing us to His Son, Jesus, especially in the Eucharist.Practically speaking, this principle must guide our prayer lives. Though it’s good to make a conscious effort to pray every day, to meditate on the Scriptures, recite devotions, and attend Mass as often as possible, we must always see those efforts as a response to God’s invitation rather than our own good idea. It’s a subtle, though important, distinction.To illustrate, consider the Gospel story of the contrasting prayer of the Pharisee and the tax collector in Luke 18:9–14. In that parable, the Pharisee offered many prayers each day and fasted regularly, but his prayers went unheard and his fasting was unfruitful. Why? Because his actions were not initiated by God but were works of his own doing. In contrast, the tax collector, aware of his sin and need for God’s mercy, humbled himself and prayed, “O God, be merciful to me a sinner.” That prayer was beautiful and fruitful because it was a response to God Who revealed his sin to him and called him to repent, which he did.Today’s Gospel lesson comes to us within the context of Jesus’ teaching on the Eucharist. Therefore, we must especially apply His opening words to the way we participate in the Mass. Our choice to attend Mass is not something we do as a favor to God. Instead, our participation in the Mass must be a response to the Father Who offers us the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus, His Son, as the spiritual food we need in order to attain everlasting life. But I told you that although you have seen me, you do not believe.” John 6:35–36Some who listened to Jesus’ Bread of Life Discourse must have been shocked. Those who listened with faith began to believe in Him, even though their understanding was not complete. Those who listened with skepticism were not only shocked but angered, as evidenced by their reaction. Today’s Gospel marks Jesus’ clearest revelation of His divine identity and mission, inviting us to accept Him into our lives.After proclaiming Himself to be the Bread of Life, Jesus reveals His unity with the Father in Heaven Who sent Him on His mission. He proclaims that He “will not reject anyone who comes to” Him because He “came down from heaven” to do the will of the Father Who sent Him. Jesus concludes with a declaration about the Father’s will and Jesus’ mission: “Everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him on the last day” (cf. John 6:37–40). Again, without the ears of faith, what Jesus revealed must have been shocking.At that time, the people of Israel were used to listening to rabbis who interpreted the Law of Moses, the psalms, and the prophets for them. These educated teachers often spoke clearly and with authority, but never like Jesus. His clarity and authority were pronounced, and His message He taught was new. Not even the prophets of old spoke like Him. When they prophesied, they usually began by saying, “Thus says the Lord…” Jesus’ teaching took a drastic shift by essentially proclaiming, “I AM the Lord…”Though some might have been skeptical and critical, it’s important for us to consider those who were humble of heart who listened to Jesus’ words with openness and faith. As they heard this new and amazing teaching, their hearts would have responded, “Yes!”, while their minds would have said, “I don’t understand.”When we experience the gift of faith, we will find we have that same reaction. God’s revealed and mysterious truths often stir our spirits first, calling us to believe, and only once we believe, is clarity given. In fact, faith often precedes understanding, inviting us to trust first and receive deeper insights in time. For that reason, we must understand that belief does not require perfect understanding. It’s appropriate to believe in our spirit, even though our minds have not yet grasped the truth we believe. Read OnlineThe crowd said to Jesus: “What sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you? What can you do? Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” John 6:30–31Today’s Gospel begins the beautiful Bread of Life Discourse, which we read at Mass for the rest of the week. In this discourse, we read the conversation Jesus had with some of the crowd who, the previous day, were among the more than 5,000 who were miraculously fed by the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. The conversation begins with the crowd’s search for physical sustenance and gradually unfolds into a revelation of a deeper, spiritual nourishment as Jesus points them to the “food that endures for eternal life” (John 6:27). Jesus had their attention. They understood that He was talking about something mysterious—more than just the miraculous multiplication of loaves and fishes. Therefore, they asked Him for a sign and quoted the Exodus account in which God provided manna in the desert. Understanding their question is key to understanding Jesus’ response.After Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt and they wandered in the desert for forty years on their way to the Promised Land, God provided them with manna as “bread from heaven” (cf. Exodus 16:4–34). About 820 years after the Israelites entered the Promised Land and established their kingdom, Jerusalem fell to the Babylonians in 586 B.C. During this time, the prophet Jeremiah is said to have hidden the Ark of the Covenant, which contained a pot of manna, in a secret place before the Jews were taken into exile (cf. 2 Maccabees 2:5–8). This hidden manna held symbolic significance, and tradition suggests there was a belief that it would miraculously reappear at Passover when the Messiah came, beginning the dawn of the last days and a new era of divine fulfillment.Some traditions suggest that there was an expectation of the hidden manna’s return, leading the crowd to wonder if Jesus would reveal such treasures—true spiritual gifts that would confirm that He was the long-awaited Messiah. However, the people misunderstood Jeremiah’s actions and the deeper significance of the hidden manna. While the tradition spoke of a miraculous return, Jesus intended to fulfill that prophecy not by uncovering the old Ark but by revealing Himself as the new Manna: “...my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world” (John 6:32–33).When Jesus revealed this, the people asked Him, “Sir, give us this bread always” (John 6:34). For on him the Father, God, has set his seal.” John 6:26–27The crowd desired one thing, but Jesus desired another. This reality is common to us all. Earlier in this chapter from John’s Gospel, Jesus miraculously fed 5,000 men—not counting the women and children—with five barley loaves and two fish.The crowd was so ecstatic that they wanted to carry Jesus off and crown Him king. Jesus, however, had no desire to be an earthly king, so He withdrew to a mountain to be alone.The next morning, when the crowd discovered Jesus had left, they searched for Him and found Him in Capernaum with the Twelve. When they found Him, they asked, “Rabbi, when did you get here?” Jesus’ response revealed their true motivation: “You are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled.” In other words, they desired another meal. Their interest in Jesus was superficial.In John’s Gospel, Jesus’ miracles are referred to as “signs.” These signs point to His divine Sonship and salvific mission, revealing Him as the source of eternal life. Jesus recognized that the people sought Him not because they sought spiritual understanding or insight into His divine nature, but solely for material satisfaction—another meal. The crowd desired physical food, but Jesus desired to give them spiritual nourishment to strengthen their faith so that they would believe and receive the eternal and superabundant treasures He came to bestow. Jesus then exhorted them to work for “food that endures for eternal life.” That “food” is their belief in Him, whom the Father sent to bring eternal life.We often find ourselves desiring the passing things of this world more than we desire God. It is natural, not sinful, to experience physical hunger and desire food. But if such desires become the driving force in our lives, then they become disordered.In addition to natural desires, our spiritual desires can also become misguided. For example, if we seek Jesus in prayer solely because we have a favor to ask of Him, then we are acting much like the crowd in today’s Gospel, and Jesus’ words to them would apply to us: “Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.”Our pursuit of Jesus must not be centered on our own ideas of what is best for us. Read OnlineThat very day, the first day of the week, two of Jesus’ disciples were going to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus, and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred. And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him. Luke 24:13–16These two disciples were overwhelmed by grief and bewildered by the events that had taken place. As they walked the seven-mile journey from Jerusalem to Emmaus, they expressed their sadness and confusion. Jesus, Whom they had hoped “would be the one to redeem Israel,” was brutally tortured and crucified before their eyes. After His death, He was buried, and that very morning they heard reports from some of the women, as well as Peter and John, that His body was missing from the tomb. What’s more, the burial cloth was neatly rolled up in the tomb, and the women informed the disciples that they saw “a vision of angels who announced that he was alive.” The two did not know what to think.As the story unfolds, Jesus appeared to them as they walked and conversed with them, “but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.” Jesus’ hidden presence teaches us that He is often with us, in our midst, yet we do not recognize Him. Distractions, trials, or our own misconceptions can dull our spiritual senses. We often fail to perceive His presence in the Eucharist, the Scriptures, the Church, during our prayer, and in one another.Jesus’ loving rebuke of these two disciples was intended to wake them up: “Oh, how foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” Every time we stumble from spiritual blindness, which leads to confusion, our Lord lovingly says the same to us. We must take that rebuke with humility, acknowledging our blindness and inability to perceive His constant presence.Jesus then “interpreted to them what referred to him in all the Scriptures.” This opening of their minds to the spiritual Gift of Understanding is key. By humbly acknowledging our spiritual blindness and the foolish way we often go about our daily lives, we dispose ourselves to this precious gift. The Gift of Understanding cannot be acquired by our own effort. Only after we honestly humble ourselves before God will He open our minds to all we need to know and understand.Once they arrived in Emmaus and invited this divine Stranger to stay with them for the night, Jesus agreed. As they dined, “while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them.” The Lord Himself, the great High Priest, gave them the Eucharist, and suddenly “their eyes were opened and
Read OnlineWhen they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they began to be afraid. But he said to them, “It is I. Do not be afraid.” John 6:19–20One of the most consoling things we can hear is our Lord saying to us, “It is I. Do not be afraid.” Every time we encounter His divine presence in our lives, we should hear those words. Though we do not always perceive Him, He is there, and when we reach out to Him in faith, He responds, dispelling the fear that cripples us, replacing it with confidence in His presence.What causes you to fear? Though some forms of fear are good—such as fear of falling off a cliff while hiking on a narrow ledge—other forms of fear that we struggle with every day are not good. Fear of what people think about us, fear of failure, or fear of being mistreated are all fears that stem from our own weakness and lack of surrender to God’s grace. In today’s Gospel, Jesus’ miraculous act of walking on the water, coming toward the disciples in their boat at night during the storm, teaches us a lesson about unhealthy fear.Fear ultimately stems from a lack of humility. It’s the fruit of pride, which is rooted in an excessive reliance on oneself rather than on God. Pride seeks control and resists vulnerability, whereas humility acknowledges one’s dependence on God and His providence. This misplaced trust in one’s own abilities or judgments leads to fear when faced with uncertainties or challenges that exceed personal power. This is beautifully presented in the difficult-to-pray Litany of Humility: “From the fear of being humiliated… despised… suffering rebukes… calumniated… being forgotten… being ridiculed… being wronged… being suspected—deliver me, Jesus!”In today’s Gospel, after Jesus had performed the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes, He sent His disciples ahead of Him. It was evening when they entered their boat and began rowing across the sea. After they “had rowed about three or four miles” and “it had already grown dark,” a fearful situation arose: “the sea was stirred up because a strong wind was blowing.”Many Church Fathers look at this passage as a literal story that is filled with symbolism, presenting us with deeper spiritual lessons. John frequently uses the images of light and darkness in his Gospel. Darkness symbolizes the absence of Christ, the Light of the World. The Apostles in the boat at night in the darkness, rowing against the wind and waves, symbolize our journey in life. The sea is the world and the boat is the Church, which enables us to traverse the difficulties we face in the world. Though Jesus is not in the boat during the waves and wind, He is not far away. When Jesus raised his eyes and saw that a large crowd was coming to him, he said to Philip, “Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?” John 6:3–5Have you ever faced a situation in which you felt desperate? Some people endure severe poverty, unsure of where their next meal will come from. Others struggle with family disunity, leading to deep fear and anxiety. Some battle addiction, uncertain how they will ever break free. Still others face obstacles that seem insurmountable. Today’s Gospel reminds us that nothing is impossible for God.The story of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes begins with an intriguing exchange between Jesus and two of His disciples. Jesus asked Philip where they could buy food for the crowd, even though He knew they did not have enough money nor a place to buy food. This question was more of a statement, showing us that we must always rely on divine providence, especially when faced with the impossible.From a human perspective, feeding such a vast crowd on a mountaintop was impossible. Similarly, we all encounter situations in life that, by human means, present insurmountable challenges. If the crowd had numbered only about twenty people, one of the disciples might have managed to meet the need with a practical solution, such as purchasing food from a nearby village. Thus, when a challenge in life has a reasonable solution within our capacity, we should pursue it. When human effort alone is not enough, we must turn to divine providence.Philip’s response reveals his purely rational perspective: “Two hundred days’ wages worth of food would not be enough for each of them to have a little.” In contrast, Andrew shows a glimmer of faith and hope when he points out, “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?” The role of the boy is often overlooked. Although the Gospel says little about him, it is clear that he entrusted everything he had to Jesus. Perhaps it was this small act of trust that allowed Jesus to perform the miracle.After Jesus had the vast crowd of 5,000 men—not counting women and children—recline in the grass, He did the unimaginable. He transformed the five barley loaves and two fish into more than the crowd could eat. The twelve baskets of food left over symbolize God’s superabundant providence, given to those who are members of His Kingdom—the new Twelve Tribes of Israel, His Church.We must read this miracle from both a literal and a spiritual point of view.
