Brown Girl Self-Care·Hosted by Bre·353 episodes
Join Bre, aka The Self-Care Pusher from Southern California, as she shares life experiences, weighs in on current events, amps up her wellness/health habits and finds clean(ish) products to try all for the sake of taking her physical, spiritual and emotional well-being to the next level and (hopefully) inspiring other women of color to do so as well. It's time to become obsessed with our self-care!
Why listen
Brown Girl Self-Care feels like a grounded voice note from a wise friend who refuses to separate wellness from race, money, rest, faith, boundaries, and real life. Bre mostly speaks solo, using personal stories, listener questions, reflection prompts, and occasional guest conversations to help Black women stop over-laboring and build softer, more honest lives. Listeners who want self-care that is candid, spiritually aware, and centered on Black women's lived experience will feel especially at home here.

Have you ever caught yourself fighting for a situation you already know you don't want because it shrinks you? In this episode, I’m sharing a moment of clarity I had after spending half an hour chasing down someone in a store to inquire about a job. It will make sense when you hit "play" and have a listen. We try so hard to make an uncomfortable situation comfortable just because it feels safe. We look for little things, like “well, at least it’s closer to home,” to justify staying on autopilot. But true liberation means you stop fighting for the bare minimum. It means you stop settling for a minute amount of money, space, love, and you actually start allowing the alignment of your true vision (which for me is working less, earning more, and pouring into my purpose). What We’re Unpacking In This Episode:Seeking Derailment vs. Allowing Alignment: What it looks like when you are fighting, inquiring over and over, and pushing for full-time hours in a place that shrinks you, instead of allowing the space to do things that actually align with your vision.Making the Uncomfortable Comfortable: How we look for little things to make a limiting situation feel okay, and how that comfort keeps us limited and stuck on autopilot. The Bare Minimum Trap: The moment you tell yourself that all of your wants, your needs, and your hopes don't matter as long as the basics are taken care of and a little bit of money is coming in.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/brown-girl-self-care/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
I'm back behind the mic and dropping some real talk about what happens when life forces you to wake up from autopilot. This week, I’m sharing the raw reality of working a labor-intensive retail job at 50, dealing with the daily grind of pushing carts, and how a repetitive question from an older gentleman in the store literally stopped me dead in my tracks and forced me to look at how I'm navigating my life.Spoiler alert: You have permission to take control of your own damn life.True, decolonized self-care isn't about performing wellness or waiting until your circumstances are perfect to claim your space. It’s about standing squarely in a hard season, looking at your life, and choosing your power anyway. Lean in as we untangle what it means to stop living on autopilot and step into the driver's seat of your own liberation. What We’re Unpacking In This Episode:The Retail Reality Check: The logistics of being back in the retail trenches in decade number five, the physical toll of pushing carts, and navigating a season that feels heavy and labor-intensive.The Pusher vs. The Driver: The exact moment a daily question from a retail customer bypassed my ears and hit my understanding, sparking a deep revelation about survival mode vs. conscious sovereignty. The Anatomy of Autopilot: Breaking down how trauma, people-pleasing, and public validation trick us into letting life just "happen" to us, instead of mapping out our own master blueprint. The Power of Stillness: Why reclaiming your life requires getting quiet, turning off the noise and distractions, and allowing what’s beneath the surface to bubble up so you can figure out what you actually want.Getting Sick of Your Own Sh*t: A real-talk reality check on how we get comfortable in our excuses, make them our identity, and why hitting a wall with your own patterns is often the exact catalyst needed for true healing. The Reclaiming of Your Power: Why you have a right to hold the map, choose your destination, change your mind, and fully embrace every single gift and talent inside of you before you leave this earth.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/brown-girl-self-care/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
After an extended hiatus, I'm back behind the mic!! I’m sharing the raw reality of navigating a major life transition at 50, dealing with the structural games of the "outside world," and wrestling with the deeply colonized fear that unless you are young, trendy, and constantly producing, your voice doesn't matter.Spoiler alert: It does matter.True, decolonized self-care isn't about performing wellness or waiting until your life is perfectly wrapped in a bow to claim your space. It’s about standing squarely in your "unknown" and choosing your purpose anyway. Lean in as we untangle what it means to practice liberation in real-time, right from the trenches. What We’re Unpacking In This Episode:The Reality of the Hiatus: Why I went silent for two months, and the vulnerability of questioning my validity in a digital age obsessed with youth and algorithms."Outside is Still Ghetto": The logistics of taking a retail job for stability, navigating spaces that treat you like a number, and the sovereign act of collecting a paycheck without giving away your soul. The Universal Struggle for Meaning: Why checking external boxes will never fill an internal void, and how to find your anchor when your surroundings feel sparse or uncertain. The Reclaiming at 50: Why my mission to provide a space of encouragement and liberation for Black women doesn't pause just because I'm figuring out my own next steps.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/brown-girl-self-care/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Let's talk a little about when you are in a season that requires you to un-labor a bit and stop grinding. I believe that Black women deserve more ease and to receive income and abundance with ease, myself included, so there will be times that we are required to un-labor and allow God to step in and provide miracles. This is counterintuitive to the lessons we learned that told us that in order to be successful, wealthy, even safe, we must labor in all ways and all the time. Hit "play" on this episode and lt's unpack things a little bit.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/brown-girl-self-care/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Valentine's Day was just a few days ago, but today we’re talking about the side of love we rarely discuss: the grace of letting go. Inspired by a surprising lesson from Mr. Rogers, this episode explores why we often keep pouring our "salt"—our energy, labor, and essence—into relationships that are no longer viable.Let's talk about the "Fixer" trap, the difference between a rough patch and a dead one, and how to reclaim your sweetness by choosing to stop performing CPR on a "dead fish". Late in 2025 one of my distractions, one that I wasn't aware of for a while, was fear. I was afraid that If I didn't earn income or receive it in a certain way, I wasn't doing things "right." This ended up putting me into a bit of freeze mode and if you've ever experienced freeze mode you know how much that feels like being stuck in time.In todays episode, let's talk a bit about distractions and how they might show up in your life and put a halt on living the life you deserve.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/brown-girl-self-care/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

In this episode I’m talking about something that’s deeply personal yet universally human: the courage to share your truth. Sometimes the weight we carry, like shame, fear, embarrassment, or unspoken experiences, can hold us back from living fully. Sharing your truth doesn’t have to be dramatic or performative, it is about creating space to release, reflect, and heal. We’re talking about:Why holding onto your truth can feel like survival but may also block your growthThe importance of having a supportive inner circle and trustworthy alliesWays to safely share your truth including journaling, therapy, creative expression, or just showing up authenticallyHow black women, historically and culturally, have had to mask their truths and why reclaiming space to be fully human is an act of self-careNavigating the highs and lows, the valleys and peaks, of life while honoring your own journeyThis episode is an invitation to let go of the pressure to be perfect, to stop bottling things up for survival, and to explore ways to express yourself safely and honestly.Reflection PromptsWhat truth have you been holding onto that needs space to be expressedWho in your life can you trust to honor your truth without judgmentWhat small, safe step can you take this week to release or express what’s been bottled upSoul-Care Circle Invitation✨ Soul-Care Circle: Intentional Vision Board Creating ✨If you’d like to explore your intentions for 2026 in community, I’m hosting a virtual Soul-Care Circle where we’ll gather to reflect, connect, and create vision/intention boards that go beyond goals—including joy, safety, support, movement, healing, and alignment.Date and Time: January 31, 2026 (9am-11am Central)Where: ZoomCost: Donation-based (any amount)This is a cozy, judgment-free space to slow down, check in with yourself, and intentionally call in the energy you want to carry this year. How to JoinSend your donation via:Cash App: @browngirlselfcareVenmo: @browngirlselfcare👉 Important:Please include your email address and “for Soul-Care Circle” in the note so I can send you the Zoom link.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/brown-girl-self-care/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
In this first episode of the year, I’m sharing something that may not matter to anyone else on the planet and how it reminded me that self-care isn’t always loud, aesthetic, or dramatic.Sometimes self-care looks like claiming space. Sometimes it looks like taking one small step toward a vision you don’t need to explain to anyone else. We’re talking about:Why small beginnings matter (especially in January)Creating physical, emotional, and energetic space as a form of self-careLetting intentions unfold without rushing or pressureHow honoring what feels meaningful to you is an act of self-loveThis episode is an invitation to start the year gently, intentionally, and on your own terms.Reflection PromptsWhat’s one small step you can take this year that feels big for you? What kind of space do you want to claim or protect in 2026?Where can you move with intention instead of urgency?Soul-Care Circle Invitation✨ Soul-Care Circle: Intentional Vision Board Creating ✨If you’d like to explore your intentions for 2026 in community, I’m hosting a virtual Soul-Care Circle where we’ll gather to reflect, connect, and create vision/intention boards that go beyond goals—including joy, safety, support, movement, healing, and alignment. The work discussed in this episode, as we enter the final days of 2025, is not just about ending the year on a high. What I feel it is, is an opportunity to see 2026 as the year your authentic self is non-negotiable. In this episode we are talking about self-care through the lens of transition, a fresh start, into the new year. In this episode let's explore: Winter as the Shedding Season: Using the end of 2025 as a time to identify and release the societal expectations and masks that stifle our authentic selves.Decolonizing Your Worth: Challenging narratives of strength and productivity to embrace softness, vulnerability, and rest.Returning to Your Roots: The importance of reconnecting with hobbies, creativity, and ancestral wisdom that spark your mind, heart, and spirit.Resources and links:Join me on December 17th for Soul-Care Circle. It needs to be done though because I'm locking in on how I'm blooming versus worrying about laboring to earn money. In our culture 9-5'ing/grinding is where our energy primarily goes and if there is anything left we do a little tending to ourselves. I want to preface this episode with a couple of things:#1 – Extreme self-care isn’t about shock value. It’s about survival, liberation, and choosing yourself when everything around you says don’t.#2 – The choices I’m sharing in this episode may feel uncomfortable, even unthinkable, because Black women are socialized to endure instead of disrupt. But these choices are valid. They are powerful. And they are yours to claim. In this episode of the Brown Girl Self-Care Podcast, I’m talking about five extreme self-care moves that many of us are told we can’t choose:Cutting off a parentDeclining the caregiver roleChoosing not to have childrenLeaving the traditional churchInvesting in yourself firstTo live well we sometimes have to be extreme or disrupt the status quo. Boundaries don’t always look like cutting people off or quitting jobs. The ones that actually keep you from burning out are the daily boundaries — the small choices that say: my time, my body, and my energy belong to me.In this episode, I’m breaking down five daily boundaries that protect your sanity:Not answering texts right awaySaying “I can’t talk right now”Blocking off the first 30 minutes of your morningLeaving when you’re readyRefusing to explain your “no”These may look simple, but they’re radical. We romanticize the idea of creating space—clearing our calendars, releasing relationships, cutting ties with the noise. But what happens when you finally get the space you’ve been asking for... and it doesn’t feel good?In this episode, I talk about the raw, often ignored reality of what spaciousness brings up: the discomfort, the second-guessing, the urge to fill the quiet. If you’ve made changes to protect your peace and now feel unsettled by the stillness, this conversation is for you.In this episode:Why stillness can feel unsafe at firstHow your nervous system reacts to peace when it’s used to chaosThe temptation to refill what you just clearedWhat to do when the quiet feels like too muchIf you're in a season of stretching, releasing, or sitting in uncomfortable in-between moments, book a 1:1 B.E.I.N.G. session with me. Hey, hey!!This is a replay episode from 2022 and I'm being very, very real about ways "I" was not a safe space for other Black women when I was younger. This is an eye-opening episode because we never intend to harm but if there is unresolved trauma, it's very possible that at some point we will. Recording this episode humbled me but I 'm sharing because it's not about judgement or blame but about awareness and reflection as we continue leaning into community care and support for one another.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/brown-girl-self-care/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

In this episode, I’m reflecting on how I spent the day, the grief and grounding I’ve moved through, and three lessons I’ve learned since choosing distance over dysfunction. This isn’t about being strong or unbothered—it’s about what happens when you choose peace and refuse to shrink, even when people expect you to go back.I’m sharing this episode for anyone who's navigating estrangement, emotional distance, or rebuilding themselves after breaking ties. You’re not alone. And no, you’re not wrong for choosing yourself. In this episode, I share:How I spent the one-year anniversary3 real lessons from going no contactThe ways I’ve learned to honor myselfHow people will try to guilt youMentioned in the Episode:→ Learn more about B.E.I.N.G. We talk about wanting community. Wanting softness. Craving care and to be seen. The thing is though, how are you gonna ask for that from other people, or give it to other people, when you don’t even give it to yourself? In this episode, I’m talking about what it really means to be in community with yourself. You’re out here showing up for everybody else, doing the most, saying yes when you don’t mean it, and ignoring what you need. That’s a form of self-abandonment.I’m sharing some things I wrote in my journal this week, a few hard truths about how we treat ourselves, and why being your own best friend is the kind of care that changes everything.Links for this episode:→ Book a Self-Care Coaching Session with me: Click Here→ Listen to last weeks episode on self-abandonment: Click Here → Follow me on Instagram: @browngirlselfcare → Want to support this work?: Click HereSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/brown-girl-self-care/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Listen to the episode from 2020Link to the free mini quideIn this episode, I share a moment that caught even me by surprise — when I was out walking and found myself shoulder-checking someone who didn’t make space for me on the sidewalk. It wasn’t aggressive. It wasn’t loud. But it was intentional. And I didn’t apologize. This story became a reflection on the ways Black women are taught to shrink, to step aside, to stay small — and what it means to finally stop doing that.I talk about:What really happened that day on the sidewalkHow that moment helped me see how much I’ve yielded in the pastThe truth I didn’t want to admit: it was intentional — and I’m not sorryThe quiet power in holding your ground when you’ve been trained not toWhy taking up space isn’t arrogance — it’s ancestralThis episode is for the Black woman who’s tired of stepping aside — physically, emotionally, or spiritually — just to keep the peace. In this heartfelt rewind episode, I take you inside a quiet moment of reflection at a solo retreat where I finally let the tears come. I talk about what it means to give so much to others while constantly putting ourselves last, and why so many Black women — myself included — struggle to give the same love, softness, and support to ourselves.I share:Why crying helped me realize what my soul is cravingThe emotional toll of always showing up for othersWhy some of us need to completely tear down our foundations and start overWhy self-love isn’t selfish or soft — it’s necessaryA question that might help you get closer to your own self-loveThis one is for the woman who’s been giving everything but feels empty inside. Brown Girl Self-Care is where Black women reclaim our wholeness and power in a world that demands our labor but denies our humanity. Here, the care of ourselves—and the care for each other—become sacred acts of justice, powerful ways of honoring our humanity in a world that doesn’t. Let’s take this journey together—we are worthy of this care.In this episode of Brown Girl Self-Care, we're cutting through the noise and naming the truth: Black women are not the problem — the systems are. Capitalism, white supremacy, grind culture, and patriarchy have conditioned us to blame ourselves for exhaustion, financial struggle, and “inconsistency.” But that ends here. We’re not just naming the harm — we’re talking about how to push back in 2025. From reclaiming rest, to doing less without guilt, to unlearning money shame, this episode is your reminder that healing and resistance can co-exist.In this episode, I cover:Why rest still feels hard (and who benefits from that)How capitalism set us up to fail with moneyThe truth about “doing the most” and what it costs usReal ways to resist — even if you're still tired, in debt, or just getting started This is for you if:You’ve been feeling like you’re not doing enoughYou’re healing while still playing the gameYou’re ready to choose rest, ease, and clarity — without guiltSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/brown-girl-self-care/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

I have been several times and I allowed that to shame me into trying to be someone that i was never intended to be. I realized that the idea that I was too boring to show up or share parts of my life online (parts that I deem aren't too private or sacred) had a huge impact on my business and and even how I felt about myself. We have got to stop reserving our 'pretty' for others or future occasions. Black women have done enough, we have given enough, it's beyond time we utilize our best for our benefit before it is given away to others. On top of that, I'm tired of playing the supporting character in life so I share a bit about that, too. 2025 is about shaking tables and no longer hiding ourselves.
