Part 1: Who the Hell Is This Guy?So there I was, minding my own business, when a first‑term Conservative backbencher popped up in my feed announcing a personal trade mission to Washington, DC. Not the trade minister. Not a senior cabinet member. A guy most Canadians wouldn’t recognize if he rang their doorbell and said, “Hi, I’m your MP.”Jamil Jivani: first‑term Conservative MP for Bowmanville–Oshawa North, Yale Law grad, former corporate lawyer turned “anti‑woke” crusader. He’s the one you might’ve seen in clips talking about how Black Lives Matter hates families, how “systemic racism” is overblown Critical Race Theory nonsense, and how young men are being failed by a soft liberal culture he’s here to save them from.​If that sounds a little… American… that’s because it is.He’s been running a “Restore the North” tour that looks suspiciously like a Canadian reboot of Charlie Kirk’s campus roadshow: rallies, sad young guys, lots of talk about masculinity, free speech, and “woke elites,” just without the literal firepower. Canadian outlets have already tagged his behaviour “Charlie Kirk Lite.” The vibe is: all of the grievance, none of the gun racks.​On top of that, he’s best friends with JD Vance (yes, that JD Vance) Donald Trump’s vice president, hillbilly‑memoir‑to‑Christian‑nationalist pipeline, and part‑time couch aficionado. Jivani literally read Bible verses at Vance’s wedding and helped run his Ohio charity. It’s not just “we met at a conference once,” it’s “we have matching friendship bracelets.”​So when Trump slammed tariffs on Canada and our auto workers started getting crushed, Jivani pitched himself as Canada’s secret weapon because of his Vance connection. He emailed the Liberal government, got no reply, and decided to go rogue… solo trip to DC, meetings with Trumpsters, and a five‑minute video explaining why he, personally, is the serious adult in the room.And then he drops the line that made me spit out my coffee:“Now, that might sound counterintuitive because I am a principled Conservative, he is our Liberal prime minister, but the reality is that this is not a partisan issue.”​Counterintuitive…Now, I discussed this a bit in yesterday’s post… but according to Jamil Jivani, it is somehow surprising (even slightly suspicious) that a Conservative MP would work with a Liberal prime minister to protect Canadian jobs and three‑quarters of our exports.​Again, that one sentence is the whole problem with our politics.In a functioning democracy, a Conservative and a Liberal working together on a national emergency is not a twist; it’s the modus operandi.
