He is also a founding member of the Loud Jackey Society (L.J.S.) at NCECA. Bill Collins, PhD, is a professor of chemistry at Fort Lewis College in Colorado. He joined the college in 2011. With a background in synthetic organic and materials chemistry, his research focuses on developing and analyzing chemically durable glasses for ceramic applications, bringing a rigorous scientific approach to the testing and formulation of food-safe glazes. For the past 30 years Sadhana Peterson has mainly exhibited with her 3 siblings who are also creatives (blame it on their mother's influence). Sadhana's love of clay was ignited in 1970 when she was 10 years old. Sadhana was handed some clay by Barbara Quittenbaum, the pottery teacher at a school where her mother was teaching. Sadhana proceeded to make a pig inspired by an ancient Egyptian hippopotamus and she knew at once that she wanted to be a potter when she grew up. Tim Clark, also know as The Half Blind Potter. Tim lost the vision in my left eye in Dec of 2020 and discovered pottery in late spring of 2021. Ceramics has played a huge role in Tim's recovery and has actually provided two different avenues of advocacy and giving back to the visually impaired community. In 2023 Tim started the "Blindfold Challenge" to benefit The Fun Eye Fund. Gillian Martin is a Melbourne-based artist working primarily in ceramics. Chelsea Erdner is the artist behind Bombabird Ceramics. Chelsea has been working with clay for over two decades, but left her job as a graphic designer in 2017 to pursue Bombabird full-time. What started as a business focused primarily on functional production work has evolved to explore symmetry, clean lines, texture, balance, and repetition. Chelsea enjoys pushing the boundaries of the materials she works with — often piecing multiple wheel-thrown objects together to achieve balance and harmony in a finished shape or adding complex flourishes to a simple form. Since the beginning of Bombabird, Chelsea has prided herself on work that is not only beautiful, but meant to last. She has produced and sold thousands of pieces to folks all over the country, including selling through retailers like Food52 and Schoolhouse Electric. Jenny Cartee is a potter living in the mountains of western North Carolina. Jenny makes mugs and other functional pots that she sells at our local farmers market and coffee shops. Jonathan Walberg's techniques and methods are influenced by his apprenticeship at St. John's Pottery in Minnesota (2004-06) under Richard Bresnahan, studies in Karatsu, Japan (2006-10) and in Ulsan, Korea (2010). These experiences nurtured a love of clay, the use of local materials, clay history, and wood-kilns. Jonathan creates on a Japanese-style wooden kick wheel and processes local clays and ashes for pottery use just south of Bayfield in Washburn, WI. Jonathan uses beach-sand from the South Shores of Lake Superior mixed into porcelain. This creates random black spots from the iron-rich sand. The local clay is also iron-rich and is mixed into the clay or glaze creating rich dark greens, reds, browns and blacks. Don Katz is a blind potter based in Los Angeles, California. Don became blind due to bacterial meningitis in 2001. After waking up from a month-long coma he had to relearn to walk and feed himself and adjust to his sightless reality. Over the past fifteen years of Cathy Terepocki's ceramics career she's had a diverse practice exhibiting, teaching, designing, and producing multiple collections of work. The backdrop of Cathy's studio is a large expanse of forest, with a river close by and the Cascade Mountains in view on a clear day. The influence of living close to nature is also something that has worked its way into Cathy's design practice. Sarah studied Product Design at Parsons School of Design and dug deeply into her minor in Ceramic for Industrial Production under the guidance of Marek Cecula. However, recognizing the practicalities of life after graduation, Sarah ventured into advertising as a Strategic Planner, where she discovered unexpected parallels of the design process and understanding consumer behavior - thinking about product use and the consumer's experince of them. In Seattle, Sarah was accepted to the two year Pottery Northwest residency program, the last group of residents to be guided by the delight that is Wally Bivens. Lesley Bevan is an artist and voice over actor currently living in Chicago, IL. Lesley received a BS in Performance Studies from Northwestern University and enjoyed a career in theatre, TV and film, regionally and internationally, for over 20 years. Lesley took her first pottery class in 1999, while a resident actor at the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. For years Lesley chased two passions, clay by day and theatre by night, sometimes smuggling work into her dressing room to slip-trail pots during intermission. Ever since Tanner Gerstberger was young, he has had a yearning to create. Like many teenagers, Tanner found his first love in high school. Only Tanner's was the pottery wheel. Tanner took as many classes as he could and increased his skills to the point where Tanner was showcasing his art in local shows and competitions.Taking the plunge to being a full-time, economically challenged artist is a tough step to make. Kieu Tran was born in Can Tho, Vietnam and is a first generation Vietnamese American artist based in Oakland, California. Kieu creates elegant, sensuous, biomorphic ceramic sculptures that meditate on love, connection and belonging. Her sculptural practice spans across ceramic, wood, marble and bronze. For studies, Kieu obtained a bachelor's degree in art history from UCLA and studied art while living in Italy and Germany. In 2014, Kieu followed an intriguing pull to Silicon Valley where she learned to code in 2014 and soon after became a full time software engineer. On a parallel path, she also developed a serious ceramic art practice. Immersing in the two practices side-by-side, Kieu eventually realized that she was always meant to be an artist. In January of 2021, Kieu left tech to pursue her passion of becoming a full time artist. Sue Pryke's work is concerned with functionality and the exploration of tactile surfaces to create tableware. Sue uses slip casting as a vehicle to produce domestic ware which is a nod to an industrial method of making, but use it in a craft setting to make pared-back contemporary ware that industry would find difficult to produce. Sue is inspired by the everyday and the ordinary, tactility and utility, material qualities, and the interaction we have with objects. Small details and preferences which reflect the intuitive decision making we all make on a daily basis when choosing what cup to take from the cupboard for a cup of tea.

Micah Schedler started his pottery journey with a simple desire to learn a skill and improve. As his skills grew and his hands got smarter, Micah started to care deeply about making "nice" pots; pots that are functionally sound with good proportions and surrounding all of those things, beautiful pots. Surrounded by incredible makers in Minnesota, Micah is lucky to land in such a rich pottery tradition rooted in functional and honest pottery. Now Micah is trying to make his own pots informed by that tradition. Right now Micah makes his wares in a renovated two car garage. He uses dark stoneware covered in white slip which helps to create some visual depth in an electric kiln. The slip brings folks into those moments of making with finger marks, drips and swipes. Juliann began studying pottery in her senior year of college at Eastern Michigan University in 1989 as a way to "kill" some time, but became hooked on the medium. Juliann continued her ceramic education at City College of San Francisco from 1992-1997 where she honed her skills and worked as a lab tech. Initially Juliann's career trajectory was in International Marketing and Japanese, however keeping her hands in clay has always been a high priority side hustle. Finally in 2019 after moving back to Michigan, Juliann took the leap and became a full time potter. Juliann is a self proclaimed maximalist. Michelle Valigura is a sculptor, with a primary focus on ceramics. Her background designing for stop motion animation (including Elf, and the Simpsons) and her love of mid century design have built a foundation for a strong sense of color and aesthetics that can be seen translated in her work. Christine was born and raised in Montana, growing up in a rural area, fairly feral, with lots of pets. From a young age Christine would obsessively draw flowers and horses (foreshadowing). Christine attended the university of Montana, earning a BFA in painting and printmaking, and almost didn't finish due to getting hired on as a cook in elk hunting camp. After college Christine became a horse packing guide, and got to explore the magical lands that make up The Greater Yellowstone ecosystem, having many adventures involving horses, mules, bears, wolves, elk , etc. It wasn't until later, when Christine had her first child that she returned to art, painting mostly images of birds, which inspired her business name, Little Bird Painting. Around 2016 a good friend of hers got a kiln, and Christine started teaching herself how to make pinch pots and throw. She was immediately obsessed, fell in love with scraffito, and has not stopped making pottery since. Growing up in Seattle, Hayne Bayless first got interested in clay when he found an old potter's wheel and kiln in a corner of the high school art room. The art teacher knew enough about pottery to point him to Leach's A Potter's Book, and that became his guide. Other than lessons with a potter in Tokyo as a late teen, Hayne managed to avoid any formal education in ceramics. Hayne abandoned wheel-throwing early on, lured by the freedom that hand-building offers. He set up his first studio in a tiny basement he shared with a washer and dryer, a stack of snow tires, mice and the snakes that ate them. The workspace amounted to a little more than a hundred square feet. To navigate the cramped quarters he sometimes had to slide sideways, and since then it's been Sideways Studio. It also applies to a certain way of looking at things; instead of encountering an idea head-on, you might approach it from a different angle, even sideways. It can help avoid the traps of your own assumptions and biases. His studio is larger now and still cluttered, but he doesn't have to walk sideways.

If Amanda had known she would one day be a professional potter, she would have taken more than Introduction to Pottery in college! Amanda was re-introduced to ceramics while stationed in Germany (2008) on a US military instillation that had several recreational centers, one of which had pottery wheels and a kiln. Since then Amanda has primarily been self taught through through research, asking a lot of questions, and trial and error. Amanda's work is 100% designed and handcrafted by herself. Her bubble designs are relatively new. Amanda uses a combination of underglazes, overglazes, and decals.

Mara & KC are a couple of graphic designers who live in the Phoenix metro area. KC was a hand builder in college and Mara became obsessed with wheel throwing just a few years ago. They started to look for a studio space outside of their laundry room and when they couldn't find one, they decided to create one. Like all little ideas, it snowballed, and before they knew it, they were opening a full-blown public ceramics studio and coffee shop/wine bar. Tom started working with clay in middle school and has continued to work in the medium ever since for 25 plus years. He is based out of Tempe, AZ who creates functional and sculptural objects. All dots are individually applied one by one and all work is food, microwave and dishwasher safe. Sophia Sohyun Kim loves working with clay. The inspiration of working with clay, the texture of reliefs, and cut outs are energizing to Sophia. Throwing clay on the potter's wheel, in particular, can be addictive to Sophia as it is quiet and personal; it is like a meditation for her as she has to center herself before she can center the clay. Trees have been Sophia's obsession for a long time. Her fascination on tree barks started while taking pictures of birch, oak, and cedar trees in the Pacific Northwest. Tom Edwards has been a full time studio potter since graduating from UC Santa Barbara with a degree in Art History in 1978. Tom works out of his home in Evergreen, CO. His pottery is wheel thrown, high fire, functional porcelain mugs, plates and bowls decorated with cartoons and ceramic decals. The predominant theme in Tom's work is his sense of humor. "I love the fact that a coffee mug can be a traveling soap box or vehicle for my point of view about something that is going on in the world. My best designs are the ones that tell a weird story about our time in history." In 2018 Tom received worldwide media coverage over his copyright dispute with Elon Musk and Tesla Motors (see Potters Cast episode 459). The electric car company had placed Tom's farting unicorn cartoon in the touch screens of their cars without obtaining his permission. Upon receiving a reasonable settlement from Tesla Motors, Tom became a voice for artists who have had their artwork stolen by larger companies. On Thursday, March 17 Tom will be talking about this adventure plus "Copyright 101 for Ceramic Decal Printers" at NCECA 2022 in Sacramento, CA. Every location has its own history, culture and community inherently marked by human experience. Luke Fuller reflects upon a notion of place which is forged through industrialization and our dependence on raw materials. Luke's work explores the complex layers of our society and infrastructure, in order to critique and understand the context in which we live. Using clay and other materials as a vehicle, Luke expresses his perceptions of landscape and the ambiguous relationship between humans and the natural environment. Luke manifests his thoughts and concerns through processes of construction and the physicality of making. Luke graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2020 (he was awarded the Charlotte Fraser Scholarship for outstanding work). Since he completed his BA at the University of Brighton in 2018, Luke has won a number of prestigious prizes and bursaries, including New Designer of the Year at the Business Design Centre, and the Nagoya University of Art Grand Prize. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the British Ceramics Biennial, Masterpiece London, and FOG Design+Art in San Francisco.

Ian "Ox" McColl "discovered" clay when he was 15 to 16 years old at school and was hooked after his first try at using the wheel. Ox went to university at Bendigo in Victoria, Australia. After graduating Ox went into pottery straight away as thrower. For a few years Ox worked in the pottery industry and became a teacher in high schools since 1995. In June 2021 Ox resigned and has been back running his own pottery where he is now full time potter. Recently Ox bought an old gas station and has spent 2020 renovating it where he is now running classes and has a gallery.

Dyana Fiediga is a full time potter living and working in beautiful Hood River, Oregon at the Clay Commons, a community ceramics studio located downtown Hood River. Dyana has a BFA from Ohio University, where she focused on Art History and any medium of art she could get her hands on. In 2010 Dyana met Jeremy Noet of Bluewater Pottery at the Bellingham Farmers Market. Dyana worked in his studio until 2016, when she moved into making pottery full time. While working at an interior design firm, Diana was always surrounded by beautiful fabrics and other materials that mostly ended up getting thrown away for various reasons as discontinuation or project surpluses. Diana decided to begin collecting these excess materials and that's when SampleHAUS was born. Lindsay references historical imagery in her work as well as creating her own original artwork. Tommy Frank was born and raised in Florida. Tommy received his B.A. in Ceramics from Asbury University (KY) and his M.F.A in Ceramics from Bowling Green State University (OH). In between Tommy was awarded three residencies: Morean Center for Clay (FL), Archie Bray Foundation (MT) summer residency and Odyssey ClayWorks (NC). Emma Baird is a jeweler in Edinburgh, Scotland, who started her adventures with Clay in 2019. Emma started out by making some simple plaster molds and slip casting porcelain that she coloured with mason stains, before trying out some experimental glaze pours on slab built stoneware plates. Aba Hutchison is a new potter/ceramicist who has been studying the craft for a year and a half under Jonathan Williams of Rock Hill Pottery Center. Before Aba studied ceramics, she focused mainly on portraiture which has a strong influence on her style, featuring several freehand sgraffito or glaze pencil portraits. Aba also designs section plates for adults.

Tarragon Smith was born and raised in Canada, but is currently living in the UK. Tarragon's background is in fine art with a BFA and MA in fine art. Through a natural progression Tarragon has moved into ceramics and makes esoteric functional ware and non-functional ware. Tarragon also teaches adult evening classes.

Silvia Vega, born and raised in Guatemala, is currently a ceramic student at Lone Star College Montgomery, located near Houston, Texas, under the instruction of Professor Charles Wood. Silvia had the opportunity to explore various museums in Europe, finally settling down to live in Paris, France. Silvia had intentions of finally entering an art program, but the school she applied for had a waiting list of years! Despite these obstacles, Silvia's love for art never waned. In 2017, at the age of 44, Silvia decided to finally fulfill her dream of pursuing an art degree. Silvia was captivated by her first ceramics class where she realized her passion was using clay as a canvas for her creativity. When Silvia's hands aren't busy caring for her three children, they are molding, sculpting, and drawing. Only recently has Silvia begun to enter her work into shows. In her second semester at Lone Star College Silvia won first place in a juried art show. Silvia has been published for three consecutive years in the school magazine, Swirl Magazine, which features selected students' fine arts and writing. Silvia continues to pour her heart into her pottery as she explores various techniques and finds new ways to express her creativity.

Nicola Moore is an Australian ceramics and mixed media artist who works out of her backyard studio in Pasadena, California. Nicola's work is a vibrant and eclectic creation of unique and functional works of art. She thrives on spontaneity, color, and the exciting evolution of experimental processes. Born in South Africa, and brought up in New Zealand and Australia, Niclola completed a Bachelor of Design in Visual Communications in 2004. Since then life, and Nicol's previous work as a motion graphics artist and painter, led her to live in many different cities around the world, including London, New York, Amsterdam, and currently, Los Angeles. Now, through a consciously intuitive work flow, Nicola draws from a global pool of inspiration and experience.

Alison Thyra Grubb makes iridescent ceramic jewelry and homeware in her studio in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Alison graduated from Gray's School of Art in 2019 where she studied 3D design, specializing in ceramics. Alison's geometric ceramics are made using a combination of slip casting and 3D printing and are decorated using colour changing lustre glazes.

Brian Chen is from New Jersey and discovered ceramics in college in 2014 and has since spent most of his time trying to learn as much as he could. Brian took a few workshops before finding himself working with Simon Levin as an apprentice. Brian finished his apprenticeship at the end of 2020 and is currently a resident artist at Carbondale Clay Center.

Brian R. Jones grew up in Syracuse, NY and is now an artist living and working in Portland, OR. He has been a resident artist at Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts in Newcastle, ME and The Clay Studio in Philadelphia, PA. He has earned degrees from The New York State College of Ceramics (BFA) and Southern Methodist University (MFA). He was a presenter at the Utilitarian Clay VI: Celebrate the Object at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in September 2012. In 2013, Jones was selected as an Emerging Artist by the National Council on the Education in the Ceramic Arts.

George Metropoulos McCauley, a Greek/American potter, has had 30 solo shows and has been included in 400 exhibitions. He has taught and conducted workshops internationally. The recipient of 4 National Endowment for the Arts grants and the prestigious Roy Acuff Chair of Excellence for the Arts at Austin Peay State University in Clarkesville, TN, his pottery and sculpture are included in international collections in 12 countries. Among the books and periodicals to feature his work are: Teapots, 21st Century Ceramics in the United States and Canada, The Best of Pottery (editions 1 and 2), Contemporary Ceramics, Wheel Thrown Ceramics, Ceramic Sculpture: Inspiring Techniques , Glazes: Materials, Recipes and Techniques, The International Teapot Exhibition in Shanghai, 500 Vases and 500 Platters, 500 Teapots . Ceramics Monthly, The Chinese Potter's Newsletter, Ceramics Monthly of Korea, Ceramics: Art and Perception. McCauley continues to have a busy workshop and exhibition schedule and still finds time to produce his own local television show," George's House of Interesting Things" on HCTV , and "GHOC Wednesday Night Videos on the internet. He has 2 films to his credit, "Archie C. Bray, Life at the Brickyard" 2008 and "Ron Meyers and the Usual Suspects" 2013. Additionally McCauley has been working with the low income and disabled community for 50 years. He maintains a studio at his home in Helena, Montana where he makes colorful earthenware pots, high temperature wood firing, earthenware wood firing and narrative sculpture. Along the way he has worked as a chef in a Greek restaurant, Formula 4 Racecar mechanic and driver, fulltime cowboy/horse trainer, concrete inspector, aluminum siding salesman, western catalog model, lifeguard and carpenter.

Melodee Joy Jackson is a Michigan-based potter who works with high-fire stoneware. Melodee sometimes etches images into her pottery, such as panoramic views of houses and city scapes. Currently Melodee is making pieces with sculpture, whether that be shallow relief grapes on a chalice or a life-size frog on top of a jar.

Before she knew it, Tania was 'mesmerized by mud' and turning it into wonderful works of Decorative Art and Functional Wares, which she refers to as 'Clay for display & Everyday use'. Tania's work has a variety of finishes, from glossy glaze to distressed and whimsical, and the sculptural work all tells a story, starting with a title to a finished piece. A desire to further his understanding of atmospheric firing led Jon to Utah State University where he completed his MFA. Jon is currently the Education Director at Queen City Clay.

Ayshah Almosalam received her Bachelor of Art Education degree from Qassim University in Saudi Arabia and her Master of Fine Art from Fontbonne University, Montana in the United States. Ayshah went from a teacher's assistant to a lecturer at Qassim University (2012-2021) teaching drawing, painting, and ceramics for Art Education undergraduate students, as well as administrative work at the Art Education department. Participated in different galleries in Saudi Arabia (paintings).

Bilyana Yankulova was born and raised in Bulgaria. Bilyana is an established pottery, graphic and visual artist with 30+ years of experience. Bilyana graduated from an Art High School specializing in ceramics; however Bilyana also received classical training in painting, drawing, and sculpture. Later on Bilyan went to obtain her MA in Ceramics from the National Academy of Arts-Sofia in Bulgaria. Bilyana moved to the United States in 2005 and has been residing in Los Angeles, California. Currently, Bilyana mainly makes her pottery using a throwing technique; however she does like to also use the slab method of building. In the past Bilyana has worked with many different clays, techniques and recently, she has been enjoying working with porcelain and creating all kinds of things from beautiful jewelry to everyday use mugs to bigger sculptures and pieces great for interior and exterior design. All of Bilyana pieces were created with both aesthetic and functionality in mind. Bilyana uses lead-free underglaze and glaze and fires everything at cone 5 and 6.

For the last 20 years Heath and Victoria have made colorful and richly patterned pottery in their home studio at Kootenay Lake in British Columbia, Canada. On September 1, 2019 Renee Zantay lost her property, job, and community to Hurricane Dorian- a direct hit to the island that knocked out power on the for 475 days. In the wake of this catastrophe Renee's husband suggested that she should follow her dream and become a potter. Renee miraculous found gas kiln and wheel. Using the power of social media Renee started selling product before her first firing. As an avid self promoter she started using hashtags like #Notatrainedkilntechnician. to gain traction. Renee now volunteers to teach a homeschool class that she funds with my ceramics.

Francesca Kaye earned her degree in fashion and textiles in the early 80's . Though she was well versed in all aspects of textiles, the only thing Francesca liked was print . Francesca was asked if she could make tiles for someone's kitchen and she said yes and made them at home while watching tv !!! Eventually Francesca got a studio in the late 80's at Cockpit Workshops ... the most brilliant place in central London. Francesca's first order was for a well known store in London called Liberty and that's when everything took off. 12 years later Francesca's lovely father in law built me a studio at the end of the garden and she bought a kiln and making again.

Joseph Lyons discovered his love for clay as a child in Seattle, Washington. Jos emigrated to Canada in 2016 to attend Vancouver Island University. Joe received multiple awards and scholarships for his commitment to community engagement and service while enrolled. Joe received a Visual Arts degree from VIU and worked as studio assistant in the Ceramics classroom. He graduated in Spring 2020. Joe has sold his art at multiple shops and galleries in the BC area. Joe volunteers at local schools, working with youth, leading pottery workshops. He is an active member of the Tozan Woodfire Society. Joe is a ceramic instructor at The Hub in Cowichan Station working with Cathi Jefferson and Nanaimo Ceramic Arts for Bronwyn Arundel.
