This week is the final episode of Bonfireside Chat until we start covering Nightreign, but we think it’s a good one! We interview the AV Club’s Will Hughes to talk about how he felt about Shadow of the Erdtree, and then we read your responses to the DLC’s endgame.
Feb 16
This week, we conclude the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC by talking about the divine tower of the Hornsent, Enir-Ilim, where the final showdowns of the game take place. First, Miquella’s followers have kind of a Civil War thing going on, and then we learn the truth about what Miquella was really after…
Feb 9
This week we go tour the many parking garages of the Ancient Ruins of Rauh, a beautiful area that we wish had more narrative and gameplay interest. It’s a pileup of a number of civilizations, all searching for the truth of the Crucible, but ultimately overwritten by the Scarlet Rot and its saint, Romina.
Feb 2
This episode, we head up the Jagged Peak in order to do the last of the optional content in Shadow of the Erdtree. We’ve heard tell of a tyrant atop of the volcano, Bayle the Dread, a draconic betrayer so hated by Placidusax that the practice of Dragon Communion was created to bring him down.
Jan 26
This week’s Roundtable Roundtable features an interview with Phobia, a YouTuber who documents glitches in games in an accessible and entertaining way. We talk about his process and how looking for glitches changes the way he plays FromSoft games. Then we read your responses to the northeastern part of the map and the Abyssal Woods.
Jan 19
Though the Abyssal Woods and Midra’s Manse aren’t huge areas gameplay-wise, we adore their lore and story so much that we had to camp out for some extra time. So this episode concludes our discussion of Midra’s Manse, including the boss fight, and a long talk about what Midra and Nanaya’s deals were.
Jan 12
Though the Abyssal Woods and Midra’s Manse aren’t huge areas gameplay-wise, we adore their lore and story so much that we had to camp out for some extra time. So this episode concludes our discussion of Midra’s Manse, and a long talk about what Midra and Nanaya’s deals were. Next episode we hit the big man himself and talk about the rules of Frenzy in The Lands Between.
Jan 5
This week we find the very hidden entrance to a very hidden path to a very hidden area. Shadow Keep hides a way to reach the Recluse’s River, which is the warpath that the hornsent inquisition took to bring great force to bear on Midra in the Abyssal Woods. Along the way we will complete our final two mini-dungeons and descend further than ought to be possible, as we approach the coolest area in the game.
Dec 29, 2024
The hands of the cosmos have many fingers, and all of their movements tell a story. But what that story means is up for interpretation. And this week we venture to the Cathedral of Manus Metyr and meet a very strange man named Count Ymir, who claims to have knowledge of the true nature of the Greater Will, the Two Fingers, and the origins of Marika’s divinity. Is he trustworthy? Who knows!? Let’s go blow whistles for him.
Dec 22, 2024
This week we complete the last of Shadow Keep, exploring the rear of the Specimen Storehouse before killing Messmer’s best bud Commander Gaius, and stumbling across the location where Marika’s whole story began.
Dec 15, 2024
You’d never guess it, but there’s still more Shadow Keep left to explore. Approaching from the Bonny Village side gets you into the flooded Church District, an area that calls New Londo to mind. But what lies beneath the water is stranger and more mysterious than the Darkwraiths.
Dec 8, 2024
This week we head on down to Bonny Village, which doesn’t seem so bonny to us. Instead, it was the beating heart of the hornsent’s jar-making operation. This is where the shamans, Marika’s people, were butchered and put into jars in order to make them into “saints”. Eventually they wish they didn’t do that.
Dec 2, 2024
This week we are joined by Sophie Pilbeam of the Sinclair Lore YouTube Channel. We talk about the world and narrative design of Shadow of the Erdtree, and how well it meshes with the base game. Afterwards, we read your responses about the Cerulean Coast and Shadow Keep areas of the game.
Nov 24, 2024
This week’s episode concludes the Specimen Storehouse, and concerns itself mostly with the fight against Messmer and an exploration of what his whole deal was. What led to his genocide of the Hornsent, and how exactly did Marika screw him over?
Nov 17, 2024
After clearing Shadow Keep proper, we find ourselves in a tower dedicated to the study and preservation of living beings touched by the Crucible. This is… unexpected in the home of someone leading a genocide against the Hornsent. But as we climb, we learn more about Messmer, and also discover the horrifying truth of Miquella’s plans.
Nov 10, 2024
For this entire season we’ve been walking in the wake of Messmer’s works, a fiery genocide of the Hornsent people. But now it’s time to visit the home of Messmer himself and breach the Shadow Keep which looms large over landscape. We talk about the level’s intricate design, and advance some quests related to Needle Knight Leda and her treachery about treachery.
Nov 3, 2024
Charo’s Hidden Grave is a region that is true to its name, resting above, but out of reach from, the Cerulean Coast. But once you get up there, you learn a little bit more about this cosmology’s relationship with death, and find a dirty little secret that the Hornsent tried to hide away from themselves. AREAS COVERED:

We can't believe their cheek! Miquella threw something away which he should not have, and we’re going deep into the Stone Coffin Fissure to find it. So dress appropriately for wading through hip-deep putrescence, and let your least secure friend know where you’re headed, and come with!
Oct 20, 2024
Wow, now THIS is blue. Having broken a Great Rune somewhere in the Shadow Realm, we now head south toward the Cerulean Coast, a beautiful region littered with gigantic stone coffin ships. But the path leading there is anything but obvious.
Oct 13, 2024
This week we speak with Jeremy Greer, of Days of Future Cast and many other shows, about his experiences with the Shadow of the Erdtree. We also read your responses to Castle Ensis and Scadu Altus!
Oct 6, 2024
This week we head deep into the Scorpion River valley to explore the base of the Rauh Ruins, a.k.a. that one very hidden map marker. No, not that one. The other one. We end up hitting our final forge dungeon, and exploring a catacomb with a very goofy and deadly threat.
Sep 29, 2024
This week we turn our attention to Scadu Altus, the region north of Castle Ensis which Messmer’s armies call their home. This region is less populated with notable landmarks than its non-shadow counterpart, but we end up finding something pretty important in the grisly fort where the Crusade executed those who failed it.
Sep 22, 2024
A Sword of Fire. And Ice. This week we tackle a Legacy-ish Dungeon, Castle Ensis. Don’t get us wrong, the boss fight here is very good… but the level design and lore here are both threadbare. They can’t all be winners, but the good news is that every other dungeon is better than this one.
Sep 15, 2024
Before we attack Castle Ensis, there’s more ground we need to cover on the far side of the Great Ellac Bridge. This week’s episode introduces a brand new kind of mini dungeon, the Ruined Forge, full of big goofy golems with obvious weak points on their butts. We also meet sleepy, insecure Thiollier before ascending the Suppressing Tower and speculating about what exactly is going on with that thing. AREAS COVERED:
Sep 8, 2024
The Great Ellac Bridge crosses a dividing line in the Gravesite Plain, a large canyon that stands between the ground we’ve already covered and Castle Ensis. The far side is fortified and narrow, but has many mysteries to explore before we head into the castle itself. This week we tackle castle-front encampment before heading north into a misty valley to delve into the Fog Rift Catacombs, where Godwyn and his forces are working toward mysterious ends.
Sep 1, 2024
This week, for the first Roundtable Roundtable of the DLC season, we invited the excellent YouTube video essayist Noah Caldwell-Gervais to join us to talk about Elden Ring, the Shadows of the Erdtree DLC, and his travelogue approach to analyzing games. Then we read your responses to the Gravesite Plain region and the Belurat, Tower Settlement legacy dungeon.
Aug 25, 2024
This week's episode takes us into the highest reaches of Belurat, to fight the Divine Beast Dancing Lion and learn the sad tale of Hornsent Grandam. She just wants to make you some awful soup, as long as you catfish her enough.
Aug 18, 2024
It's time to tackle our first Legacy Dungeon of the DLC, the sieged settlement beneath that impossible, shadowy tower. Belurat's lower quarters are choked with the shades of its defenders, still attempting to hold the line. And there's at least one crusader still here, the annoyingly devout Messmer follower Fire Knight Queelign.
Aug 11, 2024
This week's episode has us cleaning up the last remnants of the Gravesite Plain, or at least the portions on the near side of the Great Bridge. We delve into our first Gaol mini-dungeon and learn a horrifying secret about the living jars, before venturing into the western mountains to meet the Formless Mother's most devoted followers outside of the Mohgwyn Dynasty. AREAS COVERED:
Aug 4, 2024
Our coverage of the Gravesite Plain continues as we venture between its southernmost tip and its northernmost reaches. The path along this road introduces us to the elite Black Knights of Messmer's forces, our first meeting with Miquella's followers, and a village overtaken by a curse that makes people into bugs. Also, your ol' pal Wolverine might make an appearance. Bub. AREAS COVERED:
Jul 28, 2024
We need as many graves as you have. No wait, that's too many. The Gravesite Plain more than lives up to its name, being the entry point for a land that draws in all forms of death. Some of the most recent deaths, however, are the victims of Messmer the Impaler's bloody and fiery crusade. This week we talk about the DLC's first hours, including the Scorched Ruins and their attendant Furnace Golem. AREAS COVERED:

It's time to begin the new season of Bonfireside Chat proper! This week is a primer on what's new and different in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. We talk about the new leveling system, some minor new or changed mechanics, and wrap up with a lore primer on the big movers and shakers you need to remember before heading into the Shadow Realm. It's good to be back.
Jun 28, 2024
It's been a week since Elden Ring's expasion, Shadow of the Erdtree, released to everyone. We've been hard at work finishing the game and planning out the next season of Bonfireside Chat, and we wanted to take this opportunity to give you our impressions after we both finished our first playthrough. It's good! We have a lot to talk about. This episode doesn't contain story spoilers, but please take caution if you're extremely sensitive to knowing anything about these games before you play them. We can't talk about the game without talking about the game. Additionally, this episode is free for everyone! Please consider backing our Patreon so you can get not only the upcoming Shadow of the Erdtree episodes, but a huge backlog of our other work. If you already back us, please spread this around to anyone you know who might be interested! We will have news about when the season will debut soon. Thank you so much for your support!
Feb 21, 2024
This morning saw the release of the first trailer for the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC expansion for Elden Ring , and we think it looks pretty neat. So we recorded a little reaction episode and are making it available for everyone to share in the excitement. In this episode we also discuss our tentative plans for covering the DLC. Since it's releasing on June 21, 2024 and we need to play it before we can structure the season, don't expect in-depth coverage until sometime in July. We will likely put up a first impressions episode shortly after release to tide you over, though. Bonfireside Chat will return for what appears to be a lengthy season, based on all of the stuff shown in the trailer. The format of the show will likely remain unchanged, and Real Lich Hours will continue its normal release schedule as well. We're excited to have you along for the ride. Now let's go touch that arm!

With our pals Austin Walker and SekiroDubi! Note: we decided to release this one for everyone, to give them a taste of the roundtable portion of the show as we near the end of Elden Ring proper. If you know anyone who you think might like the show, we think this is a great episode to share!

Y'all must have been high when sending in these responses to Mountaintops of the Giants. Get it, high? Like on a mountain? Because mountains are tall.
Jul 3, 2023
I guess mountains are quite big, when you think about it.
Jun 25, 2023
Great. More snow. Oh. And a fuckin' snow dragon. God dammit.
Jun 18, 2023
So far away from the Erdtree. Will we ever find our way home?
Jun 11, 2023
Mostly snow. Some giants though. Not in this episode, but eventually.

This is it! What could possibly be at the bottom of this, the deepest of holes? Actually I think there might be deeper holes in this game. Hmm.

Hey babies, it's your old pal, Dung Eater, here to your dung. Go ahead and pile it up, right there. Oh, I'm so loathsome. Won't somebody stop me?

The Subterranean Shunning-Grounds beneath Leyndell can be firmly categorized as end-game content, what with all of the horned Omens doing wrestling moves on you. But this anonymous maze of squalor reveals a lot about the world above and the Golden Order that rules it, because we get to see everyone Marika viewed as threatening enough to lock up. This episode covers the upper portions of the sewers, while the next two will look at two of the most noteworthy prisoners of this stinky realm.
May 14, 2023
Don't hear a response from yourself in this episode? Didn't write in? This could have been you!
Apr 30, 2023
We're in set piece country, folks. This is the pre-end game, mid-game, but feels like late game, big name drop extravaganza.
Apr 23, 2023
* cracks open a cold one * Boy, I'm glad it's not my job to try and present Leyndell in a linear order.

The Morgit refight is surprising, but does it... uh... actually add anything? All this and more in today's episode.

We welcome QAnon Anonymous's Jake Rockatansky to discuss Elden Ring. The boys ask him if he sees any simularities between Elden Ring lore diggers and QAnon bakers. Just kidding. But that would have been an interesting question! Plus we hear your thoughts on the Gelmir region.

Altus Shrugged. Is that anything? We talk to a channel favorite and friend, The Lore Hunter, and we hear from you, the listener, about Altus Plateau.
Jan 29, 2023
We know we've been in here for a while, but there's a lot of Altus to explore. We also get to pay a visit to one of ER's most overlooked legacy dungeons The Shaded Castle, but Torrent doesn't get to come.
Jan 22, 2023
Elden Ring goes Midsommar as we venture north and encounter a festival. Giggling maidens in white, a Godskin noble, fertility symbols: this area has it all.
Jan 15, 2023
This week we dip into the wooded valley at the heart of the Altus Plateau, to see the unpleasant sights and hear the unpleasant sounds. See, there are Wormfaces about. And also a very deadly Bloody Finger who has been double dipping in powers. And a tomb with a gimmick straight of of Zelda. Altus is weird!
Jan 8, 2023
This week we venture a little further into Altus, getting our first glimps of the Capital walls and the ghostly banners that still fly over it. We head through the Lux Ruins and some features of the southern roads, fighting Godefroy and talking with Millicent, Rya, and Corhyn. Not all is well in this once-golden land.
Jan 1, 2023
With Ranni's quest behind us, we venture into the next chapter of the game as we head up the Coward's Path to reach the Altus Plateau. Whatever one might have expected of the land at the foot of the Erdtree, it's unlikely they were imagining a war-torn, fallow, eternal autumn. We talk about the paths up to Altus, and the little sub-plateau where the perfumers and a certain familiar Sage perform their rites.
Dec 25, 2022
This week we talk with streamer and Souls challenge runner extraordinaire, our good friend Lobos Jr. We talk about how Elden Ring is sitting with him nearly a year end, and how it compares to running previous games in the series. Then we read your responses to the Ranni/underground portion of the game.
Dec 18, 2022
Ranni the Witch's questline draws to a close as we reach the top of that damned Liurnian plateau, to find out where she went, and where she plans to go. And there's other cool stuff up here, too, like one of the hardest bosses in the game: Alecto. Next up is a Roundtable episode, and then were off (or up?) to Altus to begin the next leg of the season.
Dec 11, 2022
Get out your hip waders, because we're taking the plunge into the big neon-pink stew that is the Lake of Rot. This area is a bizarre roadblock on the way to the conclusion of Ranni's quest, and there's little in the game that makes reference to what this place is. The Blind Swordsman sealed the God of Rot somewhere down here, and that's all we know. But there are fun details to talk about, from the style of play this forces you to adopt, to the development history that led to us getting the zone as it is.
Dec 4, 2022
This week we resume Ranni's path, heading through Renna's Rise and finding that she has turned herself into a much smaller doll. After we help her fashion an acorn into a house, we head our third and final Eternal City, Nokstella, on the hunt for the Baleful Shadow... A wolf-man assassin sent by the Two Fingers to halt Ranni's mutiny.
Nov 27, 2022
We last left off in the Nameless Eternal City, casting our eyes upward to where the roots of the depths could take us. Today, we climb those roots and find ourselves in the shadow of Godwyn, the first of the demigods to die. And there, we resolve the fates of some other Tarnished, namely Fia and D's twin, in order to gain a new mending rune and open a possible ending for the game.
Nov 20, 2022
While acting in the service of Ranni the Witch, we have uncovered a great deal about the Night of Black Knives... including the very weapon that did the deed. With the cursemark portion from Ranni's mortal body, we now turn toward D, Rogier, and Fia to learn where the other half of it went. This draws us deep underground to a ruined, nameless city with a thick miasma in the air. The stench of death.
Nov 13, 2022
We have retrieved the sacred treasure of Nokron for Ranni the Witch, completing the first major leg of her quest. As a parting gift, she gives us a strange statue before heading off along the path of an Empyrean. This episode concerns what we do with that statue, and checking in with Ranni's crew to learn more about the fate that was laid out for her, and why she might wish to throw it off.
Nov 6, 2022
This week we venture further into Nokron, the underground exile of the Nox people, who perfected a weapon to kill a god. This involves some detours through Ancestral Worshippers, and a brush with a strange levitating coffin, before we reach the Sacred Ground itself, overtaken by Silver Tears.
Oct 30, 2022
At long last, we can continue with Ranni's work now that the stars have moved again... and punched a big ol' hole in Limgrave. Big enough that we can get into the previously inaccessible Eternal City of Nokron. Here, we seek out the blasphemous treasure of the Nox, and see a little bit of the mad science they were doing in order to supplant the Golden Order.
Oct 23, 2022
This week's Roundtable Roundtable has a slightly different format, because we are featuring two audio interviews with guests alongside your responses to the Caelid region of Elden Ring! Our first guest needs almost no introduction. Iron Pineapple is a popular YouTuber who makes funny and insightful videos about From Software games. You've probably seen his videos about the glut of Soulsborne games on Steam, or his numerous and hilarious challenge runs. Our second guest is Bryn , of the Generation Loss and Beep Beep Lettuce podcasts, and the band Stay Inside . Listen to her music and shows! The next stretch of game we're covering is the remainder of Ranni's quest and Deeproot Depths, before we head up to the Altus Plateau.
Oct 17, 2022
This week we set our sights on the big guy himself, Radahn the Star Scourge, a general whose magic is so powerful that he has arrested the stars themselves. But we're not going to do it alone. Redmane Castle's festival is the first event of its kind, where a whole dungeon is changed for a specific encounter which is the crossroads for a few different quests. And the fight itself is a grand spectacle, iterating on Dark Souls II's Ivory King challenge.
Oct 9, 2022
Our quest to defeat Starscourge Radan is near its end as we storm his stronghold, Redmane Castle. This legacy dungeon is quite strange, and not just in the context of Elden Ring. There are two versions of it, one that is full of enemies, and another that is empty and ready for the Festival to kill the rot-blighted demigod. FromSoft have never done anything like this, and while it's not entirely successful, it's still really neat. Because there's relatively little to talk about in Redmane itself, and because the Festival is getting its own episode next Sunday, we round out this week's episode by talking about what's changed in Elden Ring through patches and updates, and what it means to dive deep on a game that is both huge, and a moving target.
Oct 2, 2022
With all of the Scarlet Rot in Caelid, it's easy to overlook the other forces at play in the region. Namely, the Black Flame, Deathroot, and other forces associated with the Destined Death. In this cleanup episode, we head to the Bestial Sanctum to learn about Gurranq the Bestial Clergyman, and then we head to the Divine Tower of Caelid where we find the Godskin cult tucked away in the basement. Next week we head to Redmane Castle to begin working to handle Starscourge Radahn himself.
Sep 25, 2022
Edit: There was a problem with the first version of this that is fixed now. If you hear overlapping audio at the start you can delete and re-download. I apologize for the error! - K This week we pick up on the road above Sellia, to the cliffs above to save the poor girl Millicent at the behest of the strange sage Gowry. Then, we proceed northward beyond the giant skull to Greyoll's Dragonbarrow, a slightly less-blighted portion of Caelid, which is now a sanctuary for the remannts of Dragonkind in the Lands Between.
Sep 18, 2022
Sellia is a town in Caelid that holds many secrets, sealed away behind an impenetrable puzzle that involves lighting three torches. A strange sage named Gowry acts as our guide, sending us to the Aeonian Swamp to recover a cosmic artifact before directing us to the heart of Selia to learn where these people came from, and why the Golden Order had turned a vicious eye toward them in the past.
Sep 11, 2022
This week we continue our journey along the Caelid Highway, down further into the wilds of the rot-blighted land. Starting at the Smouldering Wall, we venture into Fort Gael and the prison complex beneath it, before reaching the swamps and dragons of the southern reaches. Next week we will turn northward into Selia and the Aeonian Swamp, ground zero of Malenia's blossoming.
Sep 4, 2022
This week we begin our hunt for General Radahn, who continues to arrest the stars from his current home in the wastelands of Caelid. We know where to find him, but the trick is making our way to him across this blighted, rotted, poisoned land. Specifically, this episode covers everything along the Caelid Highway from north to south, until you reach the Smoldering Wall. There are several minidungeons to investigate in this densely packed desert.
Aug 28, 2022
If you thought the Lands Between were already big, I would like to have seen your face when you realized that there was a whole other map waiting for you beneath the surface. This week, we begin Ranni's quest by meeting her at the Three Sisters rises, and work together with Blaidd to try (unsuccessfully) to reach the forbidden city of Nokron. Instead, we find a false night and whole new cultures worshipping in the caverns under foot.
Aug 21, 2022
Having explored the Academy of Raya Lucaria, it's time to set our sights on the other seat of power in Liurnia: Caria Manor. All of this is in service of our quest to find the witch Ranni, a demigod who seems to be pulling a lot of strings. And to get to her, we'll need to deal with a whole lot of fingerspiders.
Aug 14, 2022
This week's Roundtable Roundtable is packed with great stuff. First we interview the podcaster and hip hop artist Open Mike Eagle about Elden Ring and his history with FromSoft's games. You can find OME's website at mikeeagle.net and his Twitter @Mike_Eagle . For the written interviews, we talk to Dillon Rogers and Dave Oshry of New Blood Interactive , the publisher behind the excellent throwback shooters Dusk, Amid Evil, and ULTRAKILL, and the upcoming banger Gloomwood . Finally, we round out the episode reading your responses to the Liurnia of the Lakes episode, up through the Academy of Raya Lucaria. Keep in mind that after last week's episode, the spoiler wall is gone. We won't be gratuitous with references to things happening later in the game, but understand that we'll start putting things into context.

This week we conclude talking about the Academy of Raya Lucaria by storming the quad, and then the library, where Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon, has been locked up. We spend the majority of the episode talking about the encounter with Rennala, as an aesthetic triumph and as a truly tragic and horrifying tale.
Jul 31, 2022
The Academy thought they could sit out the Shattering by locking their doors, but they didn't take into account that their own inner rottenness would destroy them from within. We venture into the high halls of this monument to arrogance, venturing through the Church of the Cuckoo and the glintstone quarry before taking on the Red Wolf of Radagon. Next week, we will find Rennala herself and see what she's been up to in her imprisonment. Note: There are a couple of points toward the end of the episode where Kole's audio skips a little bit. We did our best to fix it, but some of it still comes through. The issue is resolved for next week's episode.
Jul 24, 2022
We have just a few more stops to make before we break into the Academy of Raya Lucaria. First we head to the Carian Study Hall, if only to talk about the ways it currently thwarts our advances. Then we talk about the bull-filled ruins of Uhl Palace before taking the elevator to Ainsel River Well. Here, we learn once again that the world of Elden Ring is bigger than we first thought, and gain some fleeting glimpses of the layers of civilizations long gone that make up the strata of the Lands Between.
Jul 17, 2022
This week we head to northeastern Liurnia, to learn more about some of the elemental forces that stand athwart the Erdtree and its Golden Order. First we visit the Frenzied Village and its ominous tower to learn about Vyke's fall... Then we head to the Knifeprint Catacombs to uncover a little more information about the treachery that began the Shattering itself.
Jul 10, 2022
This week we head back down to the other side of the Liurnian continent, venturing up a high road littered with wreckage from the civil war. We stop by a very noteworthy catacomb, check in with Hyetta, visit Jarburg, and take a history lesson from the game's biggest dork: Miriel the Turtle Pope.
Jul 3, 2022
This week we head to the western reaches of Liurnia of the Lakes, witnessing with our own eyes the atrocious acts committed against the Village of the Albinaurics. We then head up the western coast, learning what happened to Edgar, the warden of Castle Morne.
Jun 26, 2022
This week we head closer to the feet of the Academy of Raya Lucaria, getting our feet wet as we talk to folks like Rya and Blackguard Big Boggart. We also address the Albinaurics and tackle the town at the gate of the academy, getting the key we need for entry... but our quest will take us to the rest of Liurnia first.
Jun 19, 2022
Having killed Godrick and taken his Great Rune, it's time to venture into the sunken basin of Liurnia of the Lakes. First we make a quick stop back to Roundtable Hold to get a glimpse at the Fingers, and then we hit the NPCs and dungeons of the southernmost ridges and reaches of the great swamp that acts as the cradle for the birthplace of Glintstone Sorcery.
Jun 12, 2022
Manny Perez joins us to talk about Elden Ring in general, and we read some written responses from Zullie the Witch. Then we dive into your responses to Elden Ring's early game, up through Stormveil. As a warning, we don't avoid spoilers for the first 61 minutes of the episode, so if you're sensitive to that please skip forward.
Jun 5, 2022
We've been in the shadow of Stormveil Castle for the entire game, learning of Godrick's misdeeds... and it's time to make him pay. This episode picks up at the courtyard of Stormveil Castle and goes through the Godrick the Grafted boss fight, and we also talk about activating his Great Rune at the tower.
May 29, 2022
It's time we finally show that horny bastard Margit what we're made of, so we storm Stormveil Castle and find the horrors inside. This is part one of two, covering the Margit fight, the insides of the castle walls, Sorcerer Rogier, and the grisly grafting kitchens. Next week's episode will take us up through the Godrick fight.
May 22, 2022
The Weeping Peninsula is rich with foreshadowing of major players and themes to come, and our first exposure to many mysteries about what forces tangle with the Golden Order. We head into the northern forests and westward, talking about the Demihuman Forest Ruins, the Wandering Mausoleum, the Tower of Return, and so much more. Next week we take our chomp at Stormveil Castle and finally get some revenge on that terrible Margit.
May 15, 2022
There's a revolt afoot at Castle Morne, and we're headed there ourselves to see the carnage. The Misbegotten, forced into servitude because of the coincidence of their birth, have turned the place into a slaughterhouse. And it's likely related to other doings on the continent, related to the Ailing Village and its frenzied inhabitants, or the strange field pocked with meteor craters and obsessive rock gatherers. Next week we head to the western portion of the peninsula, and after that we begin storming Stormveil Castle.
May 8, 2022
This week we head to the easternmost reaches of Stormhill, exploring the dungeons, learning about Deathroot, and meeting an important NPC (and an NPC whose existence is not justified). We also head down into the very beginning stretches of the Weeping Peninsula, meeting Irina and learning about the struggles at Castle Morne.
May 1, 2022
This week we turn back from the Stormveil Castle gates and head to the western and central portions of the region, talking to Warmaster Bernahl, getting previews of Magma Mansion, and fighting some optional bosses. Then we follow Melina to our home base: the Roundtable Hold to meet some Tarnished champions.
Apr 24, 2022
This week we head to South Limgrave and check out Agheel Lake and meet Sellen and Patches, before heading north to the introductory parts of Stormhill. Next week we'll be looking at Stormhill proper before heading to the Weeping Peninsula. As a reminder, we're messing around with a weekly schedule to see if we like it. Please let us know if these shorter, more frequent episodes are working for you.
Apr 17, 2022
This week we head east of the gate to Stormhill and follow the road all the way down through Mistwood and to Fort Haight. Topics discussed include Boc's storyline, the Night's Cavalry boss fights, the beginning of Kenneth Haight's quest, Mistwood Forest, the elevator to Siofra, and Fort Haight itself. We would also like to remind you that we are experimenting with a weekly release format, meaning shorter episodes that come out more frequently, but with the same level of detail that we had before. Next week we will talk about Limgrave South and Limgrave North, up through the Stormgate area. We'd also like to announce that we have new show art! It was time, we figured, to commission a cover that is specific to Elden Ring. Check it out... The artist is Ellie, aka @ells_ink, and you can find all of her info here at her Linktree . She sells buttons and will soon have other commissions open.
Apr 3, 2022
This week we dive into Elden Ring proper with our discussion of the intro cinematic, the tutorial, and all of the dungeons of the West Limgrave region. Limgrave is a beautiful and idyllic place from a distance, but up close you see some disturbing details that show the rot that it's suffering under the inept Lord Godrick. And things are only going to get worse from here.
Mar 20, 2022
On this first big episode of the Elden Ring series, we go over Elden Ring's mechanics and generalities in broad strokes. What's returning from previous From games? What's been improved? What's brand new? We talk about as many systems and aesthetics as we can, in order to establish a basic understanding before we dive into more lore-heavy parts of the game. In two weeks, we will talk about the Limgrave West portion of Elden Ring's world.
Mar 6, 2022
Rise, Tarnished, and attend the first episode about Elden Ring! There's no way to describe the great unclenching that happened when we realized that Elden Ring is, in fact, good. Whether that bears out over the course of the entire game remains to be seen, but we have high hopes. This episode covers our first impressions after about a week of having the game, and we also lay out our current reckon on how the season will shape up. If this is your first time here, we're Gary Butterfield and Kole Ross, a duo of hosts who make Bonfireside Chat. Since 2013 we've talked about Souls games in high detail, in addition to talking about FromSoft's earlier games, their influences, and the whole galaxy of Soulslikes that spun off of Dark Souls' popularity. This show comes out every other Sunday, and it's normally available only to our [Patrons]( http://patreon.com/duckfeedtv). If you back at the $5 tier you gain access to [every Premium episode of Bonfireside Chat]( https://www.bonfireside.chat/tags/premium), you can listen to hundreds of hours of patron-exclusive content. If you decide to back us, you can [check out how to get your content by looking at this post.]( https://www.patreon.com/posts/how-to-redeem-63283880) This episode and the next episode, covering the game's general mechanics and its opening, will be free for all. We really appreciate you listening.

It's pretty rare that we will dedicate a whole episode to something as slight as a demo, but Nightfall is worth it. This full conversion mod by a team led by the creator of the Daughters of Ash mod seeks to create a full sequel to the original Dark Souls. It will feature a new story, new characters, new bosses, and whole new gameplay systems. And while the demo is short, it grants you an extensive look at what will set Nightfall apart. We really recommend you check it out.
Feb 6, 2022
Note: We've added an addendum about Weapon Augments at 53:58. We regret to omission. Who's ready to get yelled at ? We gave it an honest shot, but Returnal just didn't win us over. So this episode is about the first biome, the generalities, and about why we think this isn't a good roguelike (which doesn't mean we think it's a bad game!). We were super intrigued by the story and the atmosphere, if that's any consolation. This is likely disappointing for you, but I ask that if you really enjoy Returnal to hear us out.
Jan 23, 2022
The creators of Dark Souls deny taking any direct inspiration from the original Legend of Zelda, but we know that's impossible. So we dive into this strange, foreboding, ahead-of-its-time adventure game and look for the elements that would go on to become Souls-series hallmarks. We also talk about the whole game in a Watch Out for Fireballs! -like fashion.
Jan 9, 2022
We seek to answer the question of whether or not this is a good Dark Souls tabletop adaptation, but the more pertinent question is whether or not what's special about Dark Souls can captured outside of video games. Steamforged made an attempt at a Dark Souls board game, and we don't really like it. However, they distilled its best parts into a faster card game, and it works a little better! Listen for the particulars of how it works, and how it relates to Souls' unique mechanics.

This week's Bonfireside Chat is about the remaining two Bloodborne comic volumes, "A Song of Crows" and "The Veil, Torn Asunder". Given the strong showing in the second volume, we had our hopes set pretty high. Unfortunately, these overly abstract stories are big on style but short on substance. "A Song of Crows" gives us some backstory on Eileen the Crow, and shows us what the process of going mad is like. "The Veil, Torn Asunder" is about an outsider to Yharnam who nevertheless succumbs to his own trauma and the fell influence of the town, showing us what the process of going mad is like. The two stories are very similar.
Dec 12, 2021
This week, we return to the world of Souls comics to see what's been happening since the last time we checked in. We cover the Dark Souls anthology series Legends of the Flame ( Part 1 and Part 2 ), which has a smattering of not very good short stories that are, putatively, set in the world of Dark Souls. We then turn our attention to The Healing Thirst , the second volume of the Bloodborne comic. It's a standalone arc about two men, a scientist and a priest, who are trying to discover the cause of the Ashen Blood plague, and it's really good. For reference, here is a link to the first Dark Souls comic discussion . Additionally, the first Bloodborne comic discussion, Death of Sleep , was an episode of Adaptation Decay . We've bumped its Patreon tier down so everyone who gets this episode can also hear about the previous part.

Remember, it's only a game. More accurately, it's a movie about a game gone very wrong. This week we talk about the Green Knight, a 2021 adaptation of the classic Arthurian legend directed by David Lowery. Specifically, we look at the movie through the lens of the themes and motifs of the Souls series, looking at the importance of our changing relationships to Arthurian myths as the basis of modern fantasy. EDIT: Little note from Gary on the ending: I just found out in the original ending, they depict the beheading, but the director decided to leave it ambiguous so Kole and I could argue about it (that's me being cheeky; he decided it was better if it was left ambiguous). But I am relieved to see that at some point, he was going that way, just so I don't feel like the only person in the world who likes the story better with Gawain biting it at the end. EDIT 2: A little note from Kole, who is just now seeing Gary's little note a few months later. Not cool, bro, sneaking around like this. Though there was an original intent, deciding to leave it ambiguous was also a conscious decision, and ultimately the final one. Gary is alone in the world as the only one who takes his read on the ending and I WILL NOT HEAR OTHERWISE.

We really enjoyed Grime, and this appendix episode has us reading your thoughts on this indie Soulslvania. I think I'm going to stick with that spelling.
Nov 14, 2021
This week we conclude our discussion of Grime, the superlative Soulslike where you play as a rock man with a black hole head. We pick up after the Carven Palace and continue running errands for Shidra, before learning the truth of the Coda and our purpose in this world.
Oct 31, 2021
Our unnamed rock man with a black hole for a head continues his journey up and into the realm of the Carven, learning more about the life cycle of the rockborn of this world. This episode covers Gloomnest and the Palace of the Carven, which is a massive dungeon with a ton of stuff going on.
Oct 17, 2021
This week we continue playing the excellent Soulsike Metroidvania game Grime, heading through the rock nursery of Lithic before meeting the godlike Shidra and venturing into the meaty, nervy bowels where the Feasters dwell.
Oct 4, 2021
Grime is a brand new, very strange Soulslike that we really recommend you try out. You play as an unnamed creature with a black hole for a head, who is born into a world of stone and bodily tissue. Society is stratified based on who has, literally, the best chiseled proportions, and everything has an uncanny otherness to it. This first episode covers the generalities of the game, and goes up to the gates of the town of Lithic.
Sep 19, 2021
EDIT: I called Sophie Pillbeam Sylvie! I'm an idiot! It's Sophie. -GB This week we have a special episode where we survey some Dark Souls Youtube creators that we've enjoyed recently. Instead of lore, these creators focus on cut content, technical explanations, glitches, and different kinds of speed and challenge runs. Take the time to subscribe and check all of them out, because they're quite informative. Zulie the Witch - Short dissection videos. Ray Dhimitri - Dark Souls 2-focused close looks and dissections. Ymfah - Souls series challenge runs. BonfireVN - Fun "fight" videos (i.e. Gwyn's four knights vs. Manus). Phobia - Skips and glitch explanation, focusing on current versions of each game. Catalystz - Speed run explanations. Sinclair Lore with Sylvie Pillbeam - Fun, chill in-depth Souls topic discussions. The LoreHunter - Close reads of Elden Ring materials. IllusoryWall - You know what he does! Here's the relevant Twitter information: @ZullieTheWitch, @RayDhimitri, @_ymfah, #bonfireVN, @PhobiaSoft, @catalystz_, @SinclairLore, @TheLoreHunter, @IllusoryWall

You wrote in with your thoughts about Ashen, and they helped clarify our own dim view of the game's merits. This appendix features the highest concentration of beatdowns any single dungeon has gotten on an episode of our show, so, congrats, Seat of the Matriarch!
Sep 5, 2021
You should be warned that we're really cranky in this one. As we head into the territory of the Shadow Worshippers, Ashen finds even more ways to turn us off to what might otherwise be its charm. We hit the Palace of Lathyrus and finish out the game, despite the game's best efforts to repel us with its dungeon design and noun soup story. If us being down on a game brings you down, you know what to do with this one.
Aug 22, 2021
This week we continue our discussion of Ashen, the indie Souls-like that's open world, made for co-op, built around side quests, and has terrible, terrible dungeons. Our frustration runneth over as we head toward the second major boss, Amiren, in the Seat of the Matriarch, on our guest to reassemble the Heart that will tell us where to find the bird that will restart the world.
Aug 9, 2021
We begin our new series on Ashen by talking about the game's generalities, and fighting through the first boss. Most Soulslikes concern themselves with the end of the world, but this one has us midwifing a world's rebirth, and we're going to do that with combat and systems that are very familiar to Souls veterans.
Aug 1, 2021
We need a little more time to get more Ashen under our belts, so this week we present something from the archives... The first time Gary and Kole really talked about Dark Souls. This was recorded as part of the extra content for our Fallout episode back in November of 2012. Hear our initial geeking out, and the earliest rumblings of the crazy idea of making a show that's all about Dark Souls. We will be back next Sunday (August 8) with the beginning of our series on Ashen.
Jul 18, 2021
We return for a new survey and review episode, continuing our look back at all of the non-Souls games we've covered for the show. Once again, we ask ourselves two questions: Would we recommend you play these today? And what element, mechanical or aesthetic, would you like to see someone take from each game and use elsewhere? This second part goes through all of the games we've talked about so far on the revived run of the show, so: Immortal: Unchained Dead Cells Death’s Gambit Blasphemous King’s Field (US) The Surge Mortal Shell Eternal Ring Ico Remnant: From the Ashes Morbid: The Seven Acolytes
Jul 4, 2021
This is a different kind of episode for us, because instead of talking about one game in depth, we're looking back at all of the non-Souls games we've covered for the show and asking ourselves two questions: Would we recommend you play these today? And what element, mechanical or aesthetic, would you like to see someone take from each game and use elsewhere? This first part goes through all of the games we talked about on the original run of the show, so: King's Field IV: The Ancient City 3D Dot Game Heroes Shovel Knight Lords of the Fallen Shadow Tower Shadow Tower: Abyss Titan Souls Momodora 4: Reverie Under the Moonlight Hyper Light Drifter Salt & Sanctuary DarkMaus Let It Die Nioh Hollow Knight
Jun 20, 2021
This week, we continue and finish our discussion of Morbid: The Seven Acolytes, an indie soulslike that was unfortunately pretty disappointing. We pick up after defeating the first Acolyte and go through to the end, saving the world of Mornia from the evil grasp of the Gahar.
Jun 11, 2021
The first trailer for Elden Ring was revealed today, and we have some thoughts. This is a short reaction 'cast where we talk about what was revealed, and lay out a little bit of planning for the immediate future of the show.
Jun 6, 2021
Morbid: The Seven Acolytes is a top-down 2D soulslike with a really great art style, great looking bosses, and level design that's unfortunately lacking. We were really hopeful that we'd found a hidden gem, but instead we got a valuable lesson, through contrast, in what's necessary for a soulslike game to really sing. This is the first of two episodes about Morbid: The Seven Acolytes. We cover the generalities, and the beginning of the game through the first acolyte boss fight.
May 30, 2021
This appendix has us responding to your responses about the 2020 Demon's Souls remaster. We also spend some time talking about the passing of Kentaro Miura and talking about his impact on fantasy media.
May 16, 2021
This episode concludes our discussion of the 2020 remake of Demon's Souls, which we think is a really great effort on BluePoint's part. We talk about the two most-improved areas: the Shrine of Storms and the Valley of Defilement, before hitting the endgame and sharing our final thoughts. If you have responses for next Sunday's appendix episode, please leave them as comments on this post.
May 2, 2021
Our discussion of the Demon's Souls remaster continues with some in-depth looks at the changes made to Stonefang Tunnel and the Tower of Latria. How does the redesigned Armor Spider change that fight? How does the new music fail the Fool's Idol? All is contained inside.
Apr 18, 2021
At long last, it's here! Our discussion of the 2020 remake of Demon's Souls, the game that started our beloved SoulsBorne series. It's been four years since we did our revisit of Demon's Souls, so we're taking this opportunity to not only talk about the changes that BluePoint made, but also reacting to these sacred spaces with modern Souls-enthusiast eyes. This episode is pretty freeform. It begins with us discussing the remake in general, before talking about the tutorial, the Gates of Boletaria, and the Lord's Path.
Apr 11, 2021
Here's a brief appendix episode where we read your responses to Remnant: From the Ashes! We'll be back next week with our coverage of the Demon's Souls remake.
Apr 4, 2021
This week, we finish out our conversation about Remnant: From the Ashes by talking about the worlds of Corsus and Yaesha before hitting the endgame. Next week we will have a response episode, and then we begin our coverage of the Demon's Souls Remake!
Mar 21, 2021
We continue our discussion of Remnant: From the Ashes by talking about the first two major biomes of the game. We begin on Earth, which is ravaged by the Root even though that should be impossible. Then we reach the interdimensional Labyrinth, which takes us to the world of Rhom which has been seared by nuclear fire at the hands of the Undying King.
Mar 7, 2021
The multiverse is in danger. A creeping, overtaking force called the Root comes to worlds and sucks them dry. It's up to you to follow in the footsteps of the man who tried to stop them, and hopefully finish the job. This is the other "Dark Souls With Guns" game, with the added gimmicks of being multiplayer and partially procedurally generated. In this episode, we talk about the generalities, mechanics, and we go through the tutorial areas. The next episode will cover Earth and Rhom, most likely.
Feb 21, 2021
If you step foot in Ash Lake, you'll be struck by the improbability of a sea of trees rising infinitely to a sky you cannot see. And if you've seen Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, you'll think "this looks familiar". It's impossible to deny that Hayao Miyazaki's work influenced Dark Souls, which is why we decided to cover it on this show. What we found was that the influences are relatively few and shallow... BUT, we also discovered that this pre-Ghibli classic has influenced an untold number of things we've consumed over the past three decades. While the plot and pacing left us wanting, the imagery, atmosphere, and sheer cultural importance of this work make it something we'd recommend checking out. Listen in to hear why.
Jan 31, 2021
This week we're doing something different, and looking in-depth at the game that inspired Hidetaka Miyazaki, the creator of Dark Souls, to get into making games. A young boy is exiled for growing horns, and he must escape from a huge abandoned castle while rescuing a strange princess from a surely miserable fate. It's a simple game that has a lot of problems, but its atmosphere and obscurity are master-class, and you can see the direct lines between this and Miyazaki's FromSoft games. A huge thanks to Simon, who originally sponsored this episode for Watch Out for Fireballs!
Jan 17, 2021
This episode concludes our discussion of Eternal Ring, one of FromSoft's spinoffs and followups to King's Field. We pick up with the Limestone Cavern, finish the game, and read your responses for good measure.
Jan 3, 2021
FromSoft was weirdly prolific in the early days of the PlayStation 2. One of the few games available at launch was Eternal Ring, an attempted spinoff from King's Field whose combat was more focused on magic. That's what we're talking about now... and how it needed more time in the oven. Specifically, Eternal Ring is an object lesson in how important tight level design is for the King's Field/Souls experience.
Dec 20, 2020
This week we visit another mod, the Roguelike Dark Souls total conversion made by Grimrukh, the creator of Daughters of Ash. This is really good and ambitious, and we recommend it to anyone who wants the random Dark Souls goofiness with a little more structure. Listen in to hear how it works.
Dec 13, 2020
We liked Mortal Shell a lot, so we wanted to hear what you think! This appendix has your responses to this nifty little soulslike. Next week we will have an episode about the Dark Souls Roguelike mod, and after that we will begin covering the 2001 FromSoft action RPG Eternal Ring , a successor to King's Field.
Dec 6, 2020
In our second episode on Mortal Shell, we talk about the body of the game. This means all three spokes, their bosses, and the endgame. Where do we come down? This game is super neat, and we really think it's worth your attention. Please comment on this post with your responses for the Mortal Shell appendix episode, preferably by Wednesday, December 9.
Nov 22, 2020
This week, we begin our coverage of Mortal Shell, a 2020 soulslike with some very unique touches. You play as a strange creature who can inhabit certain dead bodies, and these "shells" become your character class as you navigate the dead kingdom of Fallgrim, collecting glands for a large bird. This episode covers the generalities and the tutorial, going over all of the ways this differs from your regular soulslike, and discussing how those changes add up to a pretty nifty interpretation of the formula.
Nov 8, 2020
We've reached the end of our cut content series, for now. Dark Souls III went through some major changes, rumored to be caused by conflict between Miyazaki and Namco Bandai. But we may never know! What we DO know is that dedicated people like Lance McDonald have dug into the Alpha files for Dark Souls III and learned about not just cut features, but hints of a whole cut story.
Oct 26, 2020
This week we talk about the things that didn't make it into Bloodborne, alongside some stuff that DID make it in... but is very well hidden. Even though Bloodborne is its own thing, it didn't manage to escape the classic FromSoft reshuffling, which massively changed its story and the roles of particular characters. Thanks to the work of a number of content creators, we have some insight into what might have been.
Oct 11, 2020
Hey everyone, they made Dark Souls III good! Okay, to be less flip about it, the Cinders mod fixes a good number of the gameplay issues we had with the base experience of Dark Souls III. Poise is fixed, build variety is better-honored, and things are a touch less linear. This is a herculean gameplay mechanics mod that adds a ton of items from elsewhere in the Soulsborne series, and we really recommend giving it a try if you're able.
Sep 27, 2020
Dark Souls II's development was famously troubled, and From had to completely change the game halfway through... without developing new maps. This has led to a situation not unlike what we see in the game itself: evidence of one kingdom that a new kingdom has built over. Illusorywall joins us once more to look at what might have been.
Sep 13, 2020
This week marks a departure for our Musical Identity series, as we look at one of the most beloved soundtracks in a Soulslike: Hollow Knight. Composed by Christopher Larkin, it's heavy on atmosphere and leitmotif, and it's tied very tightly to the tone and colors of the game itself.
Aug 30, 2020
This week we talk about the Dark Souls II mod "Augur of Darkness", created by Vampirick/Vempire. It's a remix mod that changes some of the level geometry and pathing substantially, in addition to altering boss and enemy encounters. While the mod is inconsistent about what it chooses to alter throughout the course of what was already a very big game, there's enough to recommend it for your next playthrough. At the very least, it was fun to talk about and we hope you find it interesting.
Aug 16, 2020
IllusoryWall graciously joins us to talk about content and concepts that were planned for Dark Souls, but were ultimately left out. This includes dialogue, bosses, and even DLC content that was originally planned to be part of the main game. We encourage you to back IllusoryWall's patreon and watch the Dark Souls Dissected video series.
Aug 2, 2020
This week, we conclude our discussion of the Daughters of Ash mod, talking about the updated DLC path and the endgame areas, where we find the Lord Souls and learn what Gwyn's true crime was.
Jul 19, 2020
For this episode, we return to the massive Dark Souls mod "Daughters of Ash" and pick up where we left off, at the Lower Undead Burg and continue the substantially altered mid-game. This week we cover the Gaping Dragon fight, the Painted World, the Catacombs, the first visit to the Tomb of the Giants, the Pale Eye Orb quests, Sen's Fortress, Darkroot Garden, and the Asylum Return (all area names are the originals).
Jul 5, 2020
Our summer mod series begins with the big one: Daughters of Ash. Created by a user named Grimrukh, it purports to be what From would have made if they had an extra six months of development time. This is not strictly true. While there are some cut content features restored, the ambitious part of this mod is its extra story content and changes to the routes you take through the game. It's not all 100% successful, but we cannot deny that it's an impressive effort and worth your time if you're a fan of Dark Souls and feel like you've memorized it completely. This is the first part of a three part series. In this episode cover the Undead Burg, the Undead Parish, Blighttown, the Depths, and the Lower Undead Burg. Note that these are the areas' original names, not the names Grimrukh gave to them for the mod.
Jun 21, 2020
This week, we stop on by some of From's earlier days and talk about one of our favorite video game soundtracks: King's Field 4/The Ancient City. It's got strong melodies, strong atmosphere, a touch of dorkiness, and touch of jazz. We included more examples of what we're talking about in this episode since not everyone has played the game, but we still encourage you to check out the full soundtrack for reference, and because it's a killer listen.

The great IllusoryWall joins us to talk about content that was cut from Demon's Souls prior to release. Of course we hit the sixth archstone, but we also cover some interesting "what if"s regarding how Demon's Souls reinvented death in games.
May 31, 2020
This week, we read your very mixed responses to The Surge. Some are down with the combat and level design, while others cannot get over the game's lack of identity. Who will you agree with!?!?
May 24, 2020
Our final Surge episode covers the two pieces of content DLC the game received. First, we look at "A Walk in the Park", which is quite good. It takes Warren to CREO World where he sees the softer public face of CREO literally crumble, and has to save some survivors from nano-polluted mascots. "The Good, The Bad, and the Augmented" isn't as successful, being made up of challenge arenas with a wild west theme. Next week, we'll read your responses to The Surge generally!
May 10, 2020
We hit up that RnD, that executive suite, and whatever you would call that last disaster of a level. DLC and final thoughts next episode, and stay tuned for what we're doing next!
Apr 26, 2020
Our search for answers about what happened to CREO continues as we head to Central Production B, where things get confusing. Not plot-wise, but layout-wise. This episode covers Central Production B and the Resolve Biolabs, finishing with the boss fight against BIG SISTR 1/3. Next episode will cover the rest of the main game.
Apr 12, 2020
Our next Bonfireside Chat game is 2017's The Surge, the sci-fi Soulslike. You play as Warren, a man fused to an exoskeleton who wakes up after a horrible disaster and tries to get to the bottom of it. This episode covers the game's generalities and the Abandoned Production area, up through the first boss.

We love the Dark Souls Randomizer. It's popped up in a few of our live streams, and we're in the middle of running a let's play series about it. So we took the time to record an hour specifically about how randomizer runs work, and what the appeal is. Don't worry, Surge heads, we're starting it up next episode.
Mar 16, 2020
Hello! It's finally here: The Bonfireside Chat Dark Souls Randomizer series. Gary and Kole are doing simultaneous Let's Play videos of Dark Souls: Remastered, with the Enemy Randomizer and Item Randomizer turned on. Every assumption about how things work in Lordran is stripped away, and chaos is the new order. HERE IS THE VIDEO PLAYLIST FOR YOU TO SEE! New videos will be released every day, alternating between Gary and Kole's runs. TO VIEW THE VIDEOS: Bookmark this playlist link. This series is a perk for our loyal patrons, so we will be releasing the videos as unlisted YouTube links, in an unlisted playlist. We will do our best to have the new installments ready for you by noon eastern each day. WHAT ARE YOUR SETTINGS? Randomizer runs are very fun, and watching this series may may you want to do one yourself. To facilitate this, we'll share the settings we're using on our randomizers. Dark Souls Enemy Randomizer (There are multiple options tabs above the interface) Replace Bosses: Only with bosses. Replace Normal Enemies: Only with normal enemies. Replace NPCs: Do not replace. Replacement Chance: 100% Mode: Fully random + easy asylum. Enemy Placement: Only where they fit. Mimics: Replace Gargoyle #2: Replace T-Posing enemies: Enabled. This is it, the last of our modern FromSoft soundtrack analyses. Sekiro sounds very different from the other Souls soundtracks, for obvious reasons, but it still contains lots of touches that make it fit in with its brothers and sisters. Listen in to hear us talk about what works and what doesn't.
Mar 8, 2020
We read your responses to King's Field (US )/ King's Field II (JP). We all miss the atmosphere and jank!
Mar 1, 2020
This episode continues and concludes our discussion of King's Field (released as King's Field II in Japan). We pick up with the Central Village, and continue on to defeat Necron and Guyra. The adventure continues to be atmospheric and vexing, and shows us that From knew what they were doing right from the beginning.
Feb 16, 2020
This begins our coverage of King's Field, the first FromSoft game to come to the United States. Confusingly, this is King's Field II in Japan. You play as Alexander, a friend of the king who is sent to the treacherous island of Melanat to recover the lost Moonlight Sword. King's Field is a bracing game to play, if you can get over its antiquated presentation and design. The seeds of what we'd come to love about the Souls series are present here, and that is a surprising fact for a game released in 1996. We cover the generalities and the first few areas in this episode. The next episode will cover the rest of the game.
Feb 2, 2020
Look at that alphabet soup above! Kole and Gary tackle the dlcs for DS3 and BB and find one soundtrack very good, and one very wanting.
Jan 26, 2020
In this appendix episode, we hear your thoughts on Blasphemous. Some distinct patterns emerge, and I think you'll be interested in hearing them.
Jan 19, 2020
This week concludes our own discussion of Blasphemous, as we enter the biggest of the churches and try to find and sever the heart of the Miracle. Next week we will hear your responses to Blasphemous. A week after that, we're doing another Musical Identity episode, this time about the DLCs for Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3.
Jan 7, 2020
Kole and Gary hit up the middle of this beautiful and sometimes frustrating soulslike metroidvania. Sorry it's a bit late! Illness struck.
Dec 23, 2019
This week begins our coverage of Blasphemous, a Soulslike platformer developed in Spain. Featuring some of the best pixel art, music, and tone we've seen in these games, it's an aesthetic feast. This first episode covers the mechanical generalities and the opening, up through the dungeon called Mercy Dreams.
Dec 8, 2019
Kole and Gary index da judex. In a rare turn, Gary is more warm on this bad boy than Kole, but both agrees the highs are very high. As always, we recommend taking a listen to the soundtrack before listening to the episode.
Dec 1, 2019
This is our final episode about Death's Gambit, where we share our final summations of the game and read your responses. We will be back in two weeks with an episode about the Dark Souls 3 soundtrack, then after that we will begin Blasphemous.
Nov 24, 2019
This is the conclusion of our coverage of Death's Gambit, for now. We pick up at the locked gate to Caer Siorai, visit an eldritch monstrosity, and venture to gather the crests we need to reach the Endless. Programming note: Next week will be an Appendix episode with our final thoughts on the game, and your written responses. Two weeks after that, we'll release another Musical Identity episode about the Dark Souls 3 soundtrack. Then we're on to our coverage of Blasphemous.
Nov 10, 2019
Our coverage of Death's Gambit continues as we begin hunting our appointed immortals. This episode takes us through the Obsidian Vale and Aldwynn proper, and we stop after we get our first sight of the Citadel.
Oct 27, 2019
Gary and Kole are contractually obligated to talk about this very good 2d Soulslike that is basically overflowing some good ideas and fun boss fights (and also has some not as good boss fights, to be fair). This is the first episode of our coverage, talking about generalities and up to the hub area.
Oct 13, 2019
Our soundtrack series has brought us to Bloodborne, which is a real departure for the series. FromSoft brought in composers from across the globe, and from the movie industry, to give this game its signature sound, leaning more heavily on strings than any Souls game before it. Our problem? A lot of it feels pretty anonymous.
Oct 6, 2019
You all came out in force to respond to the endgame of Sekiro, and offer your wrapup thoughts on the game in general. So we decided to dedicate two Appendix episodes to airing your responses! Next week is another Musical Identity episode about the Bloodborne soundtrack, and we will be back in late October with the first episode of our Death's Gambit coverage.
Sep 29, 2019
We had so many responses, we had to split them up into two episodes! Thanks to everyone who had something to say. There are many insights within! We'll be back next week with more.
Sep 22, 2019
Gary and Kole talk about the final bits of Sekiro, including the boss and all of the endings, as well as their final thoughts on the game. The next two(!) weeks are your responses to Sekiro, because you came out in force like champions. After that, we'll be finishing our soundtrack series before moving onto Death's Gambit, mon ami.
Sep 15, 2019
Our Musical Identity series continues with a look at the tracks that are exclusive to the Scholar of the First Sin and Lost Crowns DLC for Dark Souls 2. Most of the tracks are a return to DkS1 form, much like the rest of the content, but there are some cool decisions to talk about here.
Sep 8, 2019
In our final cleanup episode of the Sekiro season before we talk about the endings, we hit a wide range of stuff. First, we talk about the game's worst boss fight: The Demon of Hatred. Next, we recap the relevant lore bits from the conversations that arise when you give sake to Emma, Isshin, and the Sculptor. And finally, we cover the "Snake Stuff", i.e. everything you do with the Divine Child in order to open up the most complicated ending.
Sep 2, 2019
Our soundtrack series continues as we revisit our misconceptions about the DS2 OST. As always, we encourage you to listen to the soundtrack before, during, or after listening to this recording.
Aug 25, 2019
We cover the nonsensical Shura ending and head back to Hirata Estate in this boss fight packed episode! Obey the iron code and give it a listen!
Aug 18, 2019
We've touched on the various shinobi prosthetics found in Sekiro throughout this most recent season of the show, but we wanted to take an opportunity to roll back through them and take a look at their various uses and upgrades.
Aug 11, 2019
This episode covers the best level in the game, as we finally use the aroma of the fountainhead to enter the divine realm, and see where all this immortality (literally) springs from.
Aug 4, 2019
We read and discuss your responses to the middle stretch of Sekiro.
Jul 29, 2019
The Castle so nice we visited it twice. Er, three times eventually. Here we check in on our surrogate son and our surrogate father at the same time. Efficient!
Jul 21, 2019
We're continuing our "Musical Identity" series by warming up our pipes and belting out choruses over timpanis. That's right, it's time to talk about the original Dark Souls soundtrack! We hit firsts and worsts, talk about the composer's history, and even discuss how appropriate it is (or isn't) to conceive of the rhythm of Souls combat in musical terms.
Jul 14, 2019
The last item on our grocery list is a stinky stone found at the very bottom of Ashina, in Mibu Village. To get here, we have to cast ourselves out, and learn a little bit about the cosmic forces masquerading in our world to spread the rejuvenating waters.
Jul 7, 2019
Kole and Gary take on the film adaptation of the popular manga and discuss its similarities to Sekiro.
Jun 23, 2019
FromSoft announced a new game a couple of weeks ago, and we decided to record an Appendix episode about it. We expound on the little we know about Elden Ring, and offer up our hopes and concerns for the new title.
Jun 16, 2019
Last week we rescued Kuro and learned of our greater quest: to find a way to sever his immortality. One of the ingredients we need is a blade which can kill the unkillable, the Mortal Blade, which means we've got to go to Senpou Temple. This episode covers the entire Senpou Temple path, through the Abandoned Dungeons and into Mt. Kongo, culminating in the boss fight against the Folding Screen Monkeys.
Jun 9, 2019
The first in our series discussing our thoughts on the soundtracks of the Soulsborniro series!
Jun 2, 2019
This episode takes us through Ashina Castle, starting at the Blazing Bull and culminating in a rematch with Genichiro to secure the Divine Heir Kuro. Then we get a big lore dump, and learn the true mission of the game. This is fair warning that we are beyond the spoiler wall, since it's impossible to talk about some things here without putting them in end-game context.
May 26, 2019
We read your responses to the early game areas of Sekiro: the Tutorial, Ashina Outskirts, and Hirata Estate. The next episode is all about Ashina Castle.
May 19, 2019
This episode covers the entirety of the first visit to the Hirata Estate. Stay tuned next week for our first off week episode featuring your responses to the Sekiro early game.
May 5, 2019
This episode covers everything from right after the Chained Ogre, to right before we cross over into Ashina Castle proper. This includes the fight against Gyoubu the Demon and his horse which wouldn't go to horse heaven even if it existed. Reminder that the next episode will be about Hirata Estates, and then we will start doing off-week episodes.
Apr 21, 2019
We chat about the first half of the Ashina Outskirts, all the way up through the Chained Ogre. Next episode will go through the Horselord or up through the Snakelord.
Apr 7, 2019
Remember the Shinobi code, Starving Wolf. This episode begins our full coverage of Sekiro. As in seasons past, we begin with a discussion of the game's generalities and try to place it in the broader scope of From's work. Then, we move on to talk about the tutorial area, the Ashina Reservoir. Our next episode, in two weeks' time, will cover the first portion of the Ashina Outskirts, up through the Chained Ogre.
Mar 24, 2019
It plays wonderfully and it looks fantastic. However, we believe it's undercut by its structure. Listen in to hear why Dead Cells is compared to the Souls games, and why that comparison is fraught.
Mar 23, 2019
Sekiro is different. Sekiro is frustrating. Sekiro is here! Listen in for our nascent opinions on the game, based on the first few hours.
Mar 10, 2019
Jeremy Greer joins us to talk about broad thoughts on Immortal: Unchained, and the future we desire for its creators. Then we read your thoughts and opinions on the game itself.
Feb 24, 2019
Jeremy Greer joins us to talk about the remainder of Immortal: Unchained, as we storm Apex Citadel, face a completely unforeseen betrayal, and finally transcend reality itself. The next episode (out in two weeks) will feature our wrapup thoughts on the game, in addition to your letters.
Feb 10, 2019
Kole and Gary chat up Iska and Arlen (I tell you what) in Immortal Unchained.
Jan 27, 2019
In this badboy, Kole and Gary discuss Veridian and Apexion from Immortal: Unchained.
Jan 13, 2019
This debut episode of Bonfireside Chat Rekindled looks at Immortal: Unchained , a 2018 soulslike shooter. Specifically, we talk about the generalities, including how it's similar to (and different from) Dark Souls. We then talk about the tutorial area, and the Scar of the Abyss. It's good to be back!
Jan 1, 2019
You didn't expect to see this, and we didn't expect to write it: We're bringing back Bonfireside Chat. We ended the show because we ran out of Souls games, and because there wasn't much on the near horizon. Rather than forcing the show along with a format that didn't suit the games we were covering, it felt best to put it on ice. What's changed? We have a major game like Sekiro just around the corner. A ton of soulslikes have come out in the past year and a half. And the time away from the show has helped us figure out a format that will be a more sustainable and better fit for the games we're covering. So, twice a month we will be talking about soulslike and souls-related games. These episodes will be available for $5 and up Patrons. We will not force an area-by-area analysis unless the game bears it. We will aim to have one guest per game, on the wrapup episode. This wrapup episode will also serve as the letters episode where we read your responses. It's that simple! The other reason we're doing this is because we miss the show. Just like it felt like it was time to end things, it now feels like it's time to pick them back up. So, let's celebrate! Our first game for the new run of the show will be the very strange souslike shooter: Immortal Unchained . Look for the first episode to come out later this month.

Gary Butterfield and Kole Ross talk about the Conviction Arc of the Berserk manga. With the Golden Age covered, we are now venturing out beyond where any anime or movie has adapted the Berserk story. The Conviction Arc has a great structure: it's part Monster-of-the-Week and part "let's fulfill the promise of this horribly broken world". But, most of all, it gave us Serpico. Long live Serpico! Gary Butterfield and Kole Ross talk about the first two arcs of the Berserk manga. Why the hell are we talking about manga on a Dark Souls podcast? All you have to do is open a Berserk volume to any random page to see that From Software drew a LOT of inspiration from this decades-long (and still running!) series. In this episode, we cover generalities, along with the first two major arcs of the series-- "The Black Swordsman" and "The Golden Age" (Volumes 1 - 14).
