He is an artisan pipe maker from Tyrol, Austria, who discovered his love for pipes at 16 and later crafted his first one from cherrywood on his living room table, sparking a lifelong dedication to the craft. Since 2021 he has been a full-time maker under the name Ruetz Pipes. His work is known for its organic forms, and creative surface combinations, making each piece a unique smoking experience and artistic expression. On tonight’s Pipes Magazine Radio Show Rick Newcombe reminisces about Danish pipe making legend Jess Chonowitsch. Jess passed away on November 28, 2025. The impact he had on artisan pipe making is immeasurable. Rick is likely one of the first American pipe collectors to meet Jess going back to the year 1995. He has also been one of the biggest promoters of Jess’s work over several decades and has tons of great stories to celebrate the life of this “Great Dane” pipe artisan. Our featured guest on tonight’s show is Texas-based artisan pipe maker Ryan McCawley from Smokin' Barrels Briars. Like many of us, Ryan was attracted to the scent of aromatic tobaccos. He was a teacher for a while, and then a private investigator working with his dad that is a former FBI agent. Now he is a durometer technician and pipemaker living in West LA. In later years, his friend Sean blended tobaccos for him, and he was the original owner of The Story Teller's Pipe. Our featured interview tonight is with pipe maker Jerry Nelson. His brand of pipes is Nelson Pipes by Jerry. Jerry was originally influenced to try pipe smoking by last week's guest, Jay Furman. They met in an online forum where Jay was posting some pipes, but it wasn't a pipe forum. The next step, with Jerry being a carpenter, was to make pipes. He has been making them for five years now. Alan Pipes and is an expert, artisan pipe maker for over 20-years. Jeff will talk about what it is like to attend the Shanghai pipe show. The inaugural show was last year, and the most recent one was August 8 - 10, 2025. Jeff attended both shows, which is held at the China Tobacco Museum. Our featured interview on tonight’s show is with Nathanael Hummel. Nathanael is a renaissance man of the arts. He is an experienced and published digital filmmaker, video editor, videographer, writer, actor, and model. His debut novel, "Treasure Is My Trade - A Nate Colt Adventure" came out this past May. His youth was filled with dreams of swashbuckling adventure, danger to be caught up in, swords to swing, people to save, villains to vanquish - and it still is today in his creations. Our featured interview tonight is with Per George Jensen. Per is like an executive chef of tobacco. He never runs out of new tasty concoctions. He also always seems to land on his feet. In case you don't know, he spent many years at Mac Baren and later created blends for Sutliff as well. With the buyouts by STG, which have already been discussed at length, Sutliff is gone, and Mac Baren as we knew it, will soon be too. The good news is that the new Per Jensen Legacy Collection by Cornell & Diehl comes out next week - September 2. The four blends are tributes to Per’s father, Per Georg Jensen, a man who once wore the proud uniform of the Danish Navy. Our featured interview on tonight’s show is with Nate King, the "King of Pipes". Most people know of Nate as an excellent pipe artisan. He also has an honorary Master of Pipes degree from the Chicagoland Pipe Collectors Club, and is a member of the prestigious Confrérie des Maitres Pipiers de Saint-Claude. Prior to becoming a pipe maker in 2005, Nate worked in the Indy race business as a transmission specialist. Nate has just returned from pipe shows in France and Columbus, Ohio. Our featured interview tonight is with Dustin Patterson. He got into pipe smoking about ten years ago when he was working in robotics and automation and he learned about Sherlock Holmes' practice of figuring out problems by taking time to think while smoking a pipe. Something that was really puzzling would be deemed a "three pipe problem". Dustin wanted to see if this would really work. Fast forward to today where he had the idea of putting AI to the test with pipe related questions and to see how they compare to Brian's answers. So tonight we have AI vs. Brian. Our featured interview tonight is with Anthony James. Anthony is a micro-blender of pipe tobaccos. He started smoking pipes in 2020, and because of his chef background he immediately became interested in blending tobaccos. He was led to pipe smoking after his wife's grandfather passed away and they found 10 Kaywoodie pipes while cleaning out the garage. Anthony was already intrigued by pipes from his own great grandfather being a tough Navy man pipe smoker in WWII. He always had this macho image of pipe smokers and when he found the Kaywoodies, that was the last push he needed. In Pipe Parts, Brian will have a list of pipe smoking related things you must at least try once.

We'll talk about his early days of getting into pipe smoking and meeting his former podcast co-host Jon David Cole when he was an employee at the store and not the owner. You'll hear how pipe smoking is different for him now that it is not part of his job to talk about it each week along with some of his favorite memories from the show. Our featured interview tonight is with Paul Greenwood. Paul is the pipemaker behind Grunewald Pipes. He started smoking pipes in his late-20s and then stopped for almost 30 years. He started smoking pipes again in February 2022. Two months later he went to the Chicago pipe show and signed up for the pipe making seminar. He noticed that there weren't any pipes at the show resembling the pipes from The Lord of the Rings and decided to do something about it. He launched his Instagram in April 2023 and produces handmade pipes inspired by LOTR pipes. At the top of the show we will continue the tour of Brian's personal pipe collection with four Danish or Danish-inspired pipes.

Our featured interview tonight is with pipe maker Yosef Zehnder. Yosef grew up in a family of artists and artisans. As a child he enjoyed painting, drawing, writing songs/poems, pottery, photography and more. In 2012, he decided to try pipe smoking and quite enjoyed it. In 2019, he started making pipes and has become quite the artisan creating high quality pipes in both standard and freehand shapes. He has been smoking and collecting Charatan pipes for decades and has one of the largest collections in the world. He has won awards for his collection at past Chicago pipe shows. His initial influence for pipe smoking was from is grandfather. He is a retired educator with a MEd in education and doctorate an EdD in Neuroscience. He resides in Virginia. Our featured guest tonight is Dan Butler of D. Butler Pipes. Dan is a part time pipe maker producing beautiful artisan pipes. He found his way to pipes after university didn't work out, then working the night shift in a mental hospital put so much stress on him that he need to find relief. First, it was relaxing with a cigar, but when he found his way to pipes, he became much more intrigued. He started off slow as he was paying off student debt, but when that was cleared, he dove in. At the top of the show in the Pipe Parts segment, Brian will have his first installment in searching for replacement tobaccos for some of the Mac Baren and Sutliff discontinued items. Our featured guest tonight is Austin Bourdo of Pathfinder Pipes. He is an Army Veteran having the highly specialized role of Pathfinder. (Find out what that is on the show. It's super badass cool.) Austin is a father and husband living in his native Wisconsin. He does social work full time and makes pipes part time. It all started when he found his grandfather's pipes, started smoking, and he already had a lathe for bowl turning, so making pipes was a natural progression. Already a full time magician, he started smoking a pipe when he was 22-years old. Our featured interview tonight is with Simon Bosko from the YouTube Channel London Calling with Simon. He also produces the LCS Briars line of handmade pipes. London Calling has over 9,000 subscribers and over 2,000 videos. In his pipe making, Simon focuses mainly on 9mm filter pipes in both classic shapes and artistic styles. Simon has lived in London his entire life. He bought his first pipe, which was a Butz-Choquin at the Segar and Snuff Parlour in Covent Garden. At the top of the show in our Pipe Parts segment, we will have Brian's last discussion on the fallout of the STG buyout of Mac Baren and Sutliff with the mass discontinuation of tobaccos.

Our featured interview tonight is with J.B. “Brandon” Frady. Brandon was first on the show as a new pipe maker back in 2023. He was already making amazing pipes then, and now he has evolved to even better pipes that are functional works of art. His pipes are freehand and artistic shapes and designs. He is also a freelance writer for any type of project, but has been published for music reviews, concert reviews, and other writings in a couple dozen professional publications. On March 12, he will be performing in a live comedy competition. At the top of the show, Brian will have what he thinks will be an "unpopular and controversial tobacco review" on McClelland 5100 that Brian blended himself in 2019, and has been aging since then.

Our featured guest tonight is Glen Whelan. The first time we had Glen on he was the Director of Sales for Peterson of Dublin. Now he is the Managing Director. Peterson is a family tradition for Glen. His father worked in the factory for 50 years, eventually serving as Factory Manager. Although Glen now serves as Managing Director, he started as a part-time retail associate in the Peterson store at the age of 16. After more than a decade in Peterson retail, Glen joined the sales team in Sallynoggin, and kept moving up from there. Brian and Sykes will discuss the Japanese pipe maker Hiroyuki Tokutomi. Unfortunately, Tokutomi passed a week ago on January 28, 2025 at the age of 76 after being hospitalized with pneumonia. Sykes knew him well from a friendship and business relationship that spanned over 20 years. He was considered by many to be one of the best pipe makers in the world with his innovative designs. Our featured interview tonight is with Jay Furman. Jay is the co-host of the Pipe and Tamper podcast. He is a long-time member of the pipe community. He started smoking pipes in the 1980s, and owns hundreds of pipes and hundreds of pounds of pipe tobacco. His first pipe shopping experience was at Wally Frank, a famous New York chain of shops, also nationally known for their large mail order catalog business. Jay loves artisan pipes as well as health and fitness. Brian and Jay will have an extended conversation that will preempt the Pipe Parts segment. We will still have music, mailbag, and rant.

Our featured guest tonight is Dr. Fred Hanna. Fred is a well-known pipe collector, author, and speaker at pipe shows. He has a PhD. in psychology and teaches the same at the Chicago Campus at Adler University. He has also done extensive research on nicotine, and that will be the focus of the discussion tonight. Nicotine has often been cast as a villain, but it is not really harmful. It naturally occurs in the nightshade family of plants, which includes tomatoes, potatoes, and eggplants. At the top of the show, Brian will talk more about the Sutliff/McBaren/STG situation that has the serious pipe smoker segment of the market furious.

Our featured guest tonight is Jon David Cole. JD is the Owner/Tobacconist at The Country Squire in Jackson, MS, and the accompanying online store. We’ll have JD and Brian talking about Jon David's personal pipe collection, sales trends for pipes and tobacco at the shop, and the challenges presented by the pending closure of Sutliff Tobacco. They have been the supplier of many component tobaccos for several of The Country Squire's house blends. If you haven't heard the news from earlier this year - Scandinavian Tobacco Group bought Mac Baren, which owned Sutliff. Internal documents were leaked from STG showing that they will shutting down Sutliff completely, and eliminating most of the products. This will be an extended conversation, so we will skip the usual Pipe Parts opening segment.

Our featured interview on tonight’s show is with Per Billhall. Per is the owner of Scandinavian Pipes, which is an online retailer of high grade pipes. He started smoking pipes in the 1960s. His first high grade pipe was made by Hans "Former" Nielsen, who is one of the living legends from Denmark. That led to Per becoming a huge pipe and tobacco collector, and show attendee where he became well known. Along with pipe book author Jan Andersson, they started The Pipe Club of Sweden in 1991. Then in 1999, Per started "Scan Pipes". He is now one of the pipe retailing legends from Sweden. At the top of the show Brian will talk about holiday blends, and other special pipe tobacco blends.

Our featured interview on tonight’s show is with Nate King. Most people know of Nate as an excellent pipe artisan. He also has an honorary Master of Pipes degree from the Chicagoland Pipe Collectors Club, and is a member of the prestigious Confrérie des Maitres Pipiers de Saint-Claude. To be inducted into the Confrérie, this past May Nate travelled to Saint-Claude, France with master tobacco blender G.L. Pease, who was also inducted. It was quite a time in France, and at the ceremony. We'll hear all about those adventures on the show. At the top of the show we'll continue the virtual tour of Brian's pipe collection with six of his Satou Dublin-shape pipes.

Our featured interview on tonight’s show is with James Ravenwood. James is the boutique tobacco blender of Ravenwood Blends. His blending started out as a fun hobby, and he now has professionally packaged commercially available products with some great tin art. Part of his interest in pipe smoking goes back to fond memories of a retired Navy Veteran that lived on his street while he was growing up that would sit in his driveway smoking a pipe all day. Later, in 2011 he began smoking pipes and soon after started experimenting with mixing different tobaccos. His other hobby, that he has been doing for 30 years, is photography. He takes wonderful photos of outdoor spaces, and still life pictures of pipes and tobacco. You can see them on his Instagram @thebriarfellowship. Our featured interview on tonight’s show is with Warren Ertle. Warren is an extremely accomplished musician with a PhD in music. He started early as percussionist in sixth grade. Later his grandmother got him a cheap Casio keyboard which he taught himself to play. He started playing in blues bands in high school, and has been a pianist with jazz big bands for years. Even though he was already a professional musician, he took his first real piano lesson when he enrolled in college with his studies in classical music. He is of course, also a pipe smoker. Our featured interview on tonight’s show is with Danish Pipe Maker Mike Sebastian Bay. Mike got his start in pipe making when looking for someone to repair his father's pipes in the Copenhagen area. He inadvertently found renowned pipe artisan Tom Eltang, and apprenticed under him for several years. He learned Tom's signature rustication technique, and then made it his own. His pipe designs are also known for the poker shapes with "the bend" - after the forward tilt, there is another angle bent forward. Our featured interview tonight is with Noah Slasinski. Noah is a 28-year old pipe smoker from Michigan. His interview is part of our ongoing series of pipe smokers that are under the age of 30. He started with a Missouri Meerschaum hard wood pipe in his late teens and then tried just about every type of tobacco smoking and vaping, but eventually came back exclusively to pipe smoking about a year and a half ago. YouTube videos and Paul's Pipe Shop in Flint MI helped him along the way. Similar to some of our other younger pipe enthusiasts, Noah was influenced by writers and intellectuals that he appreciates, such as Carl Jung, C.S. Our featured interview tonight is with Donovan Broadway. Last week, Brian called for pipe smokers under the age of 30 that wanted to be interviewed. Donavan is 28, grew up in Nashville and started smoking a pipe during the pandemic. During quarantine, along with his brother they came up with a comic series. The character Donovan created was "an older, wiser gentleman", so it was decided that he should smoke a pipe. This lead to Donovan's interest in actually smoking a pipe. At the top of the show, we will continue the virtual tour of Brian's pipe collection with the Sandblasted Tsuishu Satou pipes. (Tsuishu are very thin multi-colored layers of Japanese lacquer that takes months to produce.)

Our featured interview tonight is with pipe maker Anthony Hopkins. Anthony makes the Castle Briars pipe brand. Anthony became interested in pipe smoking from observing his English and music teachers. He started smoking a pipe as a senior in high school, and then made two pipes in wood shop. He went off to college to become a mechanical engineer, and built a career in the field, but never forgot about pipes. He realized that a great deal of engineering goes into the making of a pipe, and in 2019 started researching pipe making. Then in 2020 he started making pipes. Tonight's discussion will include details on Per’s line of blending tobacco, which has something for everyone. You can smoke them straight, but if you want to blend tobaccos, we will have some good advice on this episode. It tells the story of the first 100 years of Brigham pipes, and includes an extensive shape chart with actual photos of the pipes. The book lays out not only the chronology of Canada’s most prominent pipe-maker but also never before compiled information on the pipes themselves, including the stamps, grading schemes and pinning patterns used between 1906 and 2006. Our featured interview tonight is with Pipe Artisan Jeff Gracik. Our regular listeners will know Jeff from our ongoing series, "Ask the Pipemaker". Jeff makes J. Alan Pipes and is an expert, artisan pipe maker for 20-years. He is involved in a new line of pipes that are exact replicas of hand-made artisan pipes. Jeff is working with two pipe makers in China, GH Zhang and Ping Zhan, who have set up CNC Manufacturing / Machining. With this they can replicate complicated hand designed pipes. They will be limited production, co-branded pipes that are licensed and authorized by the pipe makers. The pipe makers get a cut of each pipe sold, and reach a new audience that normally didn't have the budget for one of their hand made pipes. Our featured interview tonight is with Per George Jensen. Most pipe enthusiasts know Per as the longtime Mac Baren Tobacco Company spokesman. Earlier this year he made some changes in his life. He got married, moved to Germany and parted ways with Mac Baren, but not with the tobacco business. He is consulting with Sutliff Tobacco Co., and he created the popular and unique signature tobacco series, "Pipe Force". At the top of the show Brian will discuss his latest pipe acquisition, which is one of the last pipes made by late Japanese pipe artisan, Satou Smio, who died in July of this year.

Our featured interview tonight is with Tanner Halligan. Tanner is from Columbus Ohio, and makes the Butterbone Briars line of pipes. He first tried pipe smoking in high school with some friends, and enjoyed it on and off. About a year ago he began making pipes part-time, but was struggling until he decided to buy some pipe making kits by RawKrafted. The kits are made at Smoker's Haven in Columbus. Tanner went into the shop and was immediately hired by shop owner and pipe maker Premal Chheda. With Premal's mentoring, Tanner's pipe making skills took a big leap forward. Our featured interview tonight is with Dave Peterson. Dave is Brian's partner organizing the Las Vegas International Pipe Show. Influenced by his childhood friend's father, he always wanted to be a heavy equipment operator, and that is what he became and worked at his entire life. He started smoking a pipe at 14-years old. This time influenced by Hugh Hefner. He even started with Mixture 79, but he's come a long way since then. Dave is also one of the first members of the Pipes Magazine Forums, having joined in May 2009 when the site was only a few months old, and he is still an active participant. Our featured interview tonight is with Richard Madley. Richard got into pipe restoration in 2020 when he found his late father's pipes in a storage unit. He has some amazing before and after pictures on his Instagram of pipes he's restored. Now he also makes his own line of pipes - Mad Pipes, which are beautiful. He's been smoking for years, and he still smokes the vanilla cavendish that his father smoked for the wonderful nostalgia it conjures. Tonight's show will break out of our usual format in honor of the late Japanese pipe artisan, Satou Smio. Satou made high-grade pipes that are works of art, and wonders in engineering at the same time. He was trained in both the Danish and Japanese styles of pipe making, and combined both skill-sets in his masterpiece pipes. "Satou Smio, pipe maker, aged 79, died on July 16th, 2023, following a prolonged illness. While not as prolific as in his earlier years, he continued to make pipes until a few months before his death." - From: "A Legend Passes: Satou Smio". The author of that post is Sykes Wilford, founder and CEO of SmokingPipes.com, and he will join Brian for a memoriam for Satou for the entire show. Our featured interview tonight is with Paul Lucas. Paul is the pipe maker behind the Paw brand of pipes. By looking at his pipes, you would never guess that he's only been making pipes for three years. He started in 2020 during lockdown when he had nothing to do except to make pipes. One year later, he quit his job and became a full time pipe artisan. He makes both freehand and standard shape styles, but even his standard shapes are artsy. At the top of the show, Brian will answer a listener's question about the paper liners that are typically found inside the tins of tobacco.

Joda grew up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and knew several people working in the tobacco business. Before he became a pastor, he had a graphic design business that took on a job from Scandinavian Tobacco Group, which left some pipe tobacco in his office. It wouldn't be until years later that he would become a regular pipe smoker though. His pipe smoking journey will have you knowingly nodding, if not laughing a little. Rich has penned innumerous articles about pipes and tobacco for several publications, and he is known for collecting quite large pipes. Our featured interview tonight is with Pete Prevost. Pete is a pipe maker and the President of the BriarWorks pipe factory in Columbia Tennessee. BriarWorks is a a pipe maker co-op with several other pipe makers, including Todd Johnson, who co-founded it with Pete. Brian and Pete will be talking about that as well as the up-coming 2023 Muletown Pipe Show which is held at BriarWorks. In a past life, Pete was the guitar player in the band Sanctus Real. Our music segment will feature one of their Grammy-nominated songs. Matthew tells us of the founding of McCranie's by his grandfather in 1979. There's a fun Florida connection including inspiration from Edward's Pipe & Tobacco in Tampa, and some streets named McCranie in Lakeland. We'll also hear about McCranie's long-running, highly popular tobaccos, and how things have evolved from the early days. Our featured interview tonight is with Chris Morgan. Chris makes the Bones Pipes and Morgan Pipes brands. Chris makes some extremely creative high grade pipes as part of the Morgan line. The Bones pipes are named as such as they are bare bones pipes that are great for beginners, or outdoors activities where you can throw it in a tackle box. He says, they are "the absolute least expensive honest briar pipe on the market." Chris initially made his mark almost ten years ago with his introduction of the "Briar Cigar". At the top of the show, Brian will have two interesting questions from newer pipe smokers, and he provides some impressive answers.

Our featured interview tonight is with Tim Beaumont from Papa Bear's Pipes. In 2018, Tim quit his job to pursue his passion of wood-working, and began making furniture. He had a piece of walnut wood that looked like it would make a nice pipe, so he made one. Next, he made one from the more traditional briar. Then he made another, and another and so on. We've heard similar stories before. Tim's pipes are beautiful works of art in classic, and freehand shapes. At the top of the show, Brian will have his annual gift giving ideas for pipe smokers.

Our featured interview tonight is with Sergio Castello, a pipe smoking enthusiast from Mexico. He lives in the capital city of Sonora, Hermosillo, near the border with Arizona. He is a vintner by profession, growing table grapes in his family's business, Viñedos 2000. His grandfather, a doctor, smoked a pipe, and although he never saw him smoke, he did see the pipe rack in his office as a kid, and would play with them and pretend he was smoking. When he was 18-years old he got into cigars, and then pipes. At the top of the show we have a tobacco review of a surprise gift that went missing for a year and a half of an L.J. Peretti blend.

Fernando is a collector of predominantly Leeds-era Ben Wade pipes along with seconds brands, pipe catalogues and price lists. His collection also includes cigar and cigarette holders and match vesta cases, boxes, pipe sleeves and pamphlets. He has also collected print matter including a company history and advertising. As if that's not enough, he has also conducted interviews (to the extent possible) with the living descendants of Ben Wade and children of the final proprietors of the company before its sale to Hermann Lane. Prior to that he worked in the Indy race business where as a transmission specialist, precision and attention to detail is a high priority, and this carries over into his pipe making. Nate makes all kinds of pipes from the classic shapes, to whimsical. retro-inspired pieces such as a commission inspired by an old-style microphone. He has also participated in many collaborations on pipe designs, such as with fellow pipe maker Michael Lindner, and tobacco blender Gregory Pease. Our featured guest tonight is Jacob Michelson. Some of our listeners, pipe show attendees, and collectors will know Jacob’s late father Mitch Michelson. Mitch had an untimely passing on August 28, 2019. He was an avid pipe collector, and used to join Jacob in model building, woodworking, model rockets, and radio controlled cars—and the pipe was always there across all of these endeavors, but ironically, they never talked much about Jacob actually smoking a pipe or collecting. One day, Jacob decided to try a pipe on his own. Then, he really got into pipes after he inherited his father’s collection. He has some great stories of his pipe journey. He smoked cigars for 20-years, and switched to smoking pipes about three years ago. He became interested in the engineering of pipes, air-flow, etc., which led to his interest in making pipes. He is best known for his love of extremely large pipes, many of them Dunhills. Some of the extra large pipes he has were actually made as attention getting window displays, but he smokes them anyway. He started smoking pipes in 2012, and in 2014 got serious about making pipes. Mike makes about 70-80 pipes a year. He makes standard shapes, and Danish-influenced freehand pipes. They currently have about 2,000 members, and have regularly scheduled live streaming shows, and hangouts with David-Dorian as the host. He is also a Tai Chi Grandmaster. At the top of the show, Brian will discuss a former medical use for a tobacco pipe. This one is not for the faint of heart.

He cranks out around 500 handmade high grade pipes a year in all shapes and sizes. A few years back, he also became co-owner of the iconic Danish Pipe Shop in Copenhagen.
