Director Cary Fukunaga was born half-Japanese, half-Swedish. His works travel wide cultural distances, as well. He's told an immigrant story ( Sin Nombre), created authentic British period drama ( Jane Eyre), and explored gothic noir ( True Detective). His latest film, Beasts of No Nation , travels to an African country of no name. And while he's got a great eye for the specifics of his locations, Fukunaga also studies the emotional landscapes of complicated characters.
