And when I say "loosley", I mean VERY loosely. Liman basically took the premise of a teleporting boy on the run along with a few names of the characters from the book and straight up made his own story with the hopes of capturing the same atmosphere of the original source material. The main elements that Liman took from the book for the movie are the names David and Milly, David teleporting away from his abusive father to go live by himself and rob banks. Everything else, Liman decided to go rogue and invent himself…much like he did when he adapted 2002's The Bourne Identity based on the 1980 novel AND 2014's "Edge of Tomorrow" which was loosely based on the Japanese novel "All You Need Is Kill" from 2004.
