In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations , Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews neuro-optometrist Dr. Bryce Appelbaum about one of the most overlooked drivers of chronic health issues: our vision. Not just how clearly we see, but how our brain interprets visual input. Dr. Appelbaum explains that vision problems often masquerade as ADHD, anxiety, dizziness, and reading struggles, and that retraining the brain through targeted vision therapy can dramatically reduce symptoms. They explore the effect of screen time on the visual system, the shocking number of children misdiagnosed with learning disorders, and how even adults can regain focus, clarity, and spatial orientation. You’ll also learn simple exercises to improve your visual health today, without glasses or surgery. What you’ll learn in this episode: Vision is about brain function, not just eyesight: Vision is a complex brain-driven process involving focus, depth perception, spatial awareness, emotional regulation, and how our eyes coordinate and track. You can have “perfect” 20/20 eyesight yet still experience major visual processing issues that affect learning, attention, movement, and confidence. Functional vision problems can mimic ADHD, anxiety, dyslexia, or clumsiness: Difficulty reading, letter reversals, poor handwriting, focusing challenges, motion sensitivity, or behavioral issues may actually reflect an eye–brain coordination problem. Many children – and adults – are misdiagnosed because standard eye exams only measure clarity, not function. Vision therapy can rewire the brain and resolve symptoms at any age: Vision therapy is like physical therapy for the brain through the eyes. Using targeted, evidence-based exercises, it can strengthen eye coordination, focus, tracking, depth perception, and neural pathways. This helps treat issues related to concussions, dizziness, vertigo, visual intolerance, anxiety in busy environments, driving fears, and more. Screens are reshaping our visual system – and not in a good way: The average adult now spends 7+ hours a day on screens, while many children spend 6+ hours. This strains the visual system, narrows peripheral awareness, reduces blinking, disrupts circadian rhythms, and alters how our brains process information. Dr. Appelbaum shares simple habits – including the 20-20-20 rule and blinking breaks – to prevent visual stress. Simple daily exercises can improve focus, flexibility, and visual comfort: Activities like “eye push-ups,” peripheral awareness training, and eye stretches help strengthen the eye–brain connection and reduce headaches, eye strain, and reading fatigue. These exercises are accessible at any age and can delay or reduce the need for reading glasses. Floaters, headaches, and visual overwhelm may be vision-related – and treatable: Symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, light sensitivity, panic while driving, difficulty with stairs, or overwhelm in grocery stores and crowded environments often have a visual processing root cause. Dr. Appelbaum explains how addressing these issues through functional vision care can restore clarity, comfort, and confidence. In this episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews researcher and Clarisen (formerly Science Mama’s HQ) co-founder Alexandra Karpova, whose personal health challenges – and her children’s struggles with mast cell activation, thyroid symptoms, chronic fatigue, and sensory issues – led her to discover the critical role of functional nutrient deficiencies in chronic illness. Alexandra shares her research on how impaired metabolic pathways, detoxification issues, childhood nutrient depletion, environmental triggers, and poor nutrient activation can create symptoms of thyroid dysfunction even when lab tests look normal. Together, they explore the surprising connections between riboflavin, sulfation pathways, histamine intolerance, autism spectrum symptoms, mitochondrial health, and thyroid metabolism . Alexandra also discusses the emerging science behind transdermal nutrient delivery, which may offer new solutions for children and adults who can’t tolerate or absorb oral supplements. What you’ll learn in this episode: Many thyroid symptoms come from deeper metabolic issues, not just the thyroid itself. Alexandra explains how impaired detoxification (like sulfation or glucuronidation), mitochondrial dysfunction, or functional nutrient deficiencies can mimic hypothyroidism – even when lab tests appear normal. These hidden blocks may lead to fatigue, temperature swings, mood changes, and sensory symptoms in both adults and children. Functional nutrient deficiencies often don’t appear on standard blood tests. Alexandra shares how nutrients such as B2, B6, iodine, selenium, and molybdenum may be present in the bloodstream but not utilized well by cells due to poor gut function, low stomach acid, inflammation, or impaired liver pathways. This helps explain why symptoms persist despite “normal labs.” Children with autism, sensory issues, or mast cell activation may have underlying metabolic disruptions. Alexandra’s story highlights how addressing nutrient imbalances, gut health, and thyroid hormone activation can support dramatic improvements in sleep, sensory processing, allergic reactions, and social and cognitive development. Topical (transdermal) nutrients may be game-changing for kids and adults with poor gut absorption. Alexandra describes how transdermal B2, iodine, and selenium bypass gut inflammation and low stomach acid, leading to faster improvements in energy, mood, and metabolic stability – especially for children who struggle with oral supplements. Histamine intolerance, anxiety, eczema, and food reactions often have biochemical root causes. B2-dependent enzymes (like DAO), infections (like H. pylori ), mold, poor detox pathways, and nutrient deficiencies can drive histamine overload. Supporting these pathways can dramatically reduce symptoms like anxiety, sensory overload, and skin symptoms. There is hope – and simple, targeted strategies can improve complex chronic symptoms. Alexandra outlines small, consistent changes parents can make to reduce overwhelm, support metabolism, and gradually rebuild health in themselves and their children. Tune in to learn more about how nutrition, biochemistry, and metabolic support can transform thyroid health for both children and adults. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations , Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Trevor Cates – author, naturopathic doctor, and founder of The Spa Dr. skincare and supplement line – about the intimate links between hormones, skin, and hair. Together, they explore how perimenopause, thyroid dysfunction, and toxic skincare products affect women’s health inside and out. Listeners will gain insight into the role of bioidentical hormones, clean skincare, nutrient-rich foods, and targeted supplements in promoting healthy aging. Dr. Cates also shares her clinical experience with hair loss, the importance of addressing root causes, and how natural approaches can bring harmony back to the body. What you’ll learn in this episode: Perimenopause reveals hidden imbalances. Symptoms like insomnia, night sweats, palpitations, and anxiety can feel overwhelming, but they are signs of underlying root causes – like gut dysbiosis or nutritional deficiencies – that often resurface during this time of transition. Hormones and skin are deeply connected. Fluctuations in estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and cortisol can cause acne, premature aging, and sagging skin. Instead of masking symptoms, Dr. Cates emphasizes root-cause healing through nutrition, stress reduction, and hormone balance. Skincare toxins can disrupt hormones. Many conventional products contain endocrine disruptors that are absorbed through the skin and contribute to estrogen dominance, thyroid dysfunction, and other imbalances. Choosing clean, pH-balanced, and microbiome-friendly products is key. Hair loss isn’t just about the thyroid. While hypothyroidism is a common cause, other root triggers include low ferritin, high DHT, stress, medications, and infections. Addressing these drivers while supporting hair externally can promote regrowth and resilience. Inside-out and outside-in approaches create lasting beauty. Anti-inflammatory foods, antioxidants, collagen, and gut health practices work synergistically with topical skincare and haircare products to maintain healthy, glowing skin and strong hair. Supplements and botanicals can ease perimenopause. Formulas with Vitex (chaste tree), black cohosh, dong quai, and saw palmetto can help with brain fog, mood changes, and hair loss related to shifting hormones. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations , Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Rajsree Nambudripad, founder of OC Integrative Medicine in Orange County, CA, who specializes in treating gut disorders through an integrative lens. Dr. Rajsree shares her personal journey with SIBO and how it inspired her to develop a comprehensive four-phase protocol addressing motility, digestion, inflammation, and microbial balance. Together, she and Dr. Wentz explore how SIBO impacts hypothyroidism, why many reflux cases stem from low stomach acid, and how to restore gut health without endless food restrictions or antibiotic cycles. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why so many thyroid patients have SIBO. Up to 50% of people with hypothyroidism test positive for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. Slower gut motility, low stomach acid, and reduced bile and enzyme output make it easier for bacteria to overgrow in the small intestine – and this is why so many thyroid patients struggle with bloating, reflux, and food reactions. How SIBO mimics other gut issues. Bloating, food sensitivities, histamine intolerance, and acid reflux often stem from SIBO, but the underlying issue isn’t “too much acid” or “bad foods” – it’s misplaced bacteria in the small intestine damaging enzymes and inhibiting absorption. Dr. Rajsree’s four-step SIBO protocol. Discover the clear, phased protocol that supports motility, reduces gas and irritation, calms inflammation, and gently clears the overgrowth without overwhelming your system. Why conventional SIBO treatments fall short. Antibiotics and low-FODMAP diets may help temporarily, but without fixing motility and healing the gut lining, symptoms almost always return. A comprehensive approach reduces relapse and supports long-term gut health. The thyroid-SIBO connection. Low T3 slows the migrating motor complex, the gut’s natural “cleaning wave.” Fine-tuning thyroid medication or even adding a small amount of T3 support can improve motility and make SIBO recovery easier and more effective. Why reflux is often caused by too little stomach acid, not too much: Many people with Hashimoto’s actually have low stomach acid levels. Acid-suppressing medications can worsen nutrient deficiencies and create the perfect conditions for SIBO. Supporting digestion with betaine HCl and enzymes often reduces bloating and reflux far more effectively than PPIs. In this episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Alice McDonnell, founder of the Hashimoto’s 411 community, the largest autoimmune thyroid support group, and the first to focus on the autoimmune roots of Hashimoto’s. She is also the creator of the Autoimmune 411 community and Academy. Drawing on two decades of advocacy, Alice shares why the healing sequence matters, how to cut through today’s noisy wellness feeds, and the foundations that help any protocol work better – without the setbacks. We explore iodine, LDN, and peptides, diet frameworks without dogma, and practical stories that save patients from learning the hard way. This is a grounded reset for anyone overwhelmed by conflicting advice about autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why sequence is everything. Alice explains how jumping straight into detox (or any “advanced” protocol) without opening drainage pathways and stabilizing the nervous system can backfire – sometimes for months – while a stepwise approach creates steady progress and fewer flares. How to navigate the info-storm. Reels and algorithms don’t equate to your unique healing plan. Not all wellness hacks may be appropriate for you. Remember to use a simple lens, considering context, bio-individuality, and timing, to stop doomscrolling through internet noise, and get to your own root cause. The foundational four to make protocols “stick.” Nervous system regulation, limbic retraining, lymphatic flow, and fascia support are the base layers that help diets, supplements, and detox actually work (and get you feeling better). Iodine, LDN, and peptides pros, cons, and prerequisites. From selenium status and iodine timing, to why LDN helps some and not others, to BPC-157 observations – learn the nuances that turn “it depends” into a personal plan. Diet without dogma. The Autoimmune Paleo (AIP) Diet can be game-changing, but it isn’t the only path. Alice discusses Mediterranean, Whole30-style, low-histamine, and GAPS-inspired approaches, plus when to pause eliminations and evaluate deeper triggers like stress, infections, or mold. Real-world cautionary tales. We share stories on DIY colon cleanses, poorly timed chelation, and even “healthy” spirulina gone wrong, and how to protect yourself with education, labs, and sequence – so you don’t have to learn the hard way! In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations , Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews gallbladder and fatty liver nutritionist Olivia Haas about the connection between bile flow, liver health, and thyroid function. They cover early red flags (like pale, “sticky” stools and nausea after fats), when low-fat makes sense (and when it doesn’t), and practical ways to stimulate bile gently with bitters, minerals, and targeted supplements. They also discuss various testing methods and a step-by-step approach to optimal digestive health for those with and without gallbladders. What you’ll learn in this episode: Fat intolerance is a bile story – start with flow. Nausea after fatty meals, reflux, and pale, sticky, or floating stools point to sluggish bile. Instead of staying low-fat forever, Olivia explains how to gently improve bile composition and flow so you can digest fats again. Bitters are a simple first step. Radicchio, dandelion (tea or greens), lemon water, and diluted apple cider vinegar can quickly nudge bile flow and ease fat sensitivity, especially when used before meals. Olivia shares when to start bitters, how often, and how to scale up safely. The thyroid–gallbladder loop runs both ways. Low thyroid can thicken bile (cholesterol supersaturation) and weaken gallbladder contraction (low CCK), while poor bile flow can impair T4-to-T3 conversion and raise toxin burden – fueling a vicious cycle. Fatty liver is common, and reversible when you catch it early. Don’t wait for elevated liver enzymes. Patterns like high triglycerides, low HDL, insulin resistance, fatigue, 3 a.m. wake-ups, clay-colored stools, and PMS can flag trouble earlier and justify an ultrasound/FibroScan. Post-cholecystectomy? You still need a plan. Without the gallbladder’s “regulator,” bile can drip constantly and irritate the gut – or be too weak to digest fats. Olivia’s priorities: individualized digestive support (enzymes/bile salts/ACV), mineral repletion, fiber, and steady liver support. Myth-busting time. “Low-fat forever saves your gallbladder” (it doesn’t), “you can eat anything after surgery” (please don’t), and “it’s just genetics” (choices and exposures turn genes on) all miss the bigger picture of bile flow, metabolism, and toxins. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations , Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Ann Shippy, an integrative physician and former engineer who has become a leader in functional medicine and environmental health. Dr. Shippy discusses how toxins, genetics, and nutrient status can shape fertility, pregnancy outcomes, and even the long-term health of future generations. Listeners will discover practical, science-based strategies to reduce toxic exposures, restore the body’s natural detoxification systems, and prepare for healthy conception and pregnancy – even later in life. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why preconception health matters for every family. The six to twelve months before conception are a key window to influence fertility, pregnancy outcomes, and a child’s lifelong health. Dr. Ann Shippy explains how both parents’ nutrition, toxin exposure, and stress can shape DNA expression, and how small changes can support healthy conception. The overlooked role of toxins in chronic illness. Mold, heavy metals, plastics, and household chemicals can quietly affect hormones and immune balance. Dr. Shippy shares common environmental exposures she sees in her patients and how testing, detoxification, and lifestyle shifts can help restore balance. How genetics and epigenetics shape our resilience. Your DNA isn’t your destiny. Dr. Shippy explains how nutrients such as methylated B vitamins, folate, and choline can support methylation, helping “turn on” genes that promote health and silence those linked to disease. The critical link between gut health and detoxification. A healthy gut microbiome helps clear toxins, balance hormones, and support fertility. Dr. Shippy outlines ways to strengthen gut and liver detox pathways naturally with binders, glutathione, and key nutrients. How to create a toxin-free home and pregnancy plan. From air and water filtration to safer personal care and cleaning products, Dr. Shippy offers realistic ways to minimize toxic load and protect both parents and developing babies. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations , Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Josh Dech, a holistic nutritionist and digestive health expert who is challenging the conventional medicine narrative around Crohn’s disease and colitis. Gut symptoms are common for those with Hashimoto’s and thyroid disease, and they often have similar root causes, including inflammation, food sensitivities, microbiome imbalances, and toxins. Josh reveals why the mainstream approach often fails patients, and how natural strategies and “root cause” thinking can lead to remission and, in some cases, even recovery. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why the conventional view of Crohn’s and colitis may be flawed. Standard approaches often focus on suppressing symptoms with medications or recommending surgery when things progress, but they rarely ask why inflammation is happening in the first place. Josh explains how this limited model leaves many people dependent on treatments that don’t provide long-term solutions. The hidden drivers of gut inflammation. Crohn’s and colitis rarely happen “out of nowhere.” Josh explains how food sensitivities, microbiome imbalances, toxins, and immune dysregulation often interact to create chronic inflammation, and how identifying your personal triggers can open the door to remission. The role of nutrition in calming the gut. Instead of fearing food, Josh shows how the right diet can calm the immune system and repair the gut lining. When nutrition is used strategically – removing irritants and rebuilding with nutrient-dense foods – the body often heals more effectively than it does on medication alone. Real stories of reversal and recovery. Hundreds of Josh’s clients have defied expectations – moving from flare-ups and medication dependence to full, symptom-free lives. Their results show that Crohn’s and colitis aren’t life sentences, but conditions that can improve dramatically when you heal from the inside out. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations , Dr. Izabella Wentz speaks with integrative cardiologist Dr. Jack Wolfson about how heart health goes far beyond lab numbers. They discuss why thyroid issues and nutrient deficiencies can trigger palpitations, why cholesterol isn’t the villain it’s made out to be, and how lifestyle factors like sleep, sunlight, nutrition, and reducing toxins, can naturally support cardiovascular wellness. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why palpitations may be a message from your body: Heart flutters often reflect deeper imbalances like thyroid dysfunction, iron or magnesium deficiency, or toxin exposure. Dr. Wolfson explains how addressing the root cause can calm the heart and restore balance naturally. Why cholesterol is not the villain we’ve been told. Cholesterol is essential for hormone production, cell membranes, and vitamin D synthesis. Elevated cholesterol is often a sign of other imbalances such as thyroid dysfunction, liver congestion, or nutrient deficiencies, not a statin deficiency. When “conventional” treatments miss the mark: Statins and blood pressure drugs may improve numbers but overlook root causes such as adrenal stress, nutrient depletion, and toxin overload. Dr. Wolfson shares how true healing begins with rebalancing the body. The heart-healing power of lifestyle medicine: Sunlight, sleep, nutrient-rich food, movement, and emotional healing are powerful heart supports. Even daily sun exposure can boost vitamin D, nitric oxide, and melatonin for better blood pressure and sleep. The overlooked connection between your mouth, gut, and heart: Periodontal disease, leaky gut, and microbiome imbalance can fuel inflammation that affects both thyroid and heart function. Discover how holistic dental care and gut healing can protect your cardiovascular system. Supplements and natural supports that work. Nutrients like beet root, L-arginine, grape seed extract, CoQ10, carnitine, and omega-3s can improve circulation, support mitochondria, and optimize heart and thyroid function. In this solo episode, Dr. Izabella Wentz shares the turning point that shifted her Hashimoto’s recovery: discovering that “acid reflux” can stem from low stomach acid (hypochlorhydria) rather than excess stomach acid, as many believe. She explains how hypochlorhydria drives fatigue, brain fog, pain, nutrient deficiencies, SIBO/ H. pylori risk, and why supporting digestion can restore energy and clarity fast. She outlines a practical betaine HCl + pepsin titration, who should avoid it, and simple daily upgrades (like mindful meals, lemon water or diluted ACV, bitters, and thiamine). Real-world response rates and safety notes are included. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why “acid reflux” can actually mean low stomach acid. In hypothyroidism, stomach acid often runs low, which impairs protein breakdown, fuels overgrowths, increases ammonia (hello brain fog), and leaves you tired after meals. Understanding this flips the usual reflux narrative and opens a path to real relief. How low acid drives fatigue, pain, and mood changes. Poor protein digestion means fewer amino acids for neurotransmitters and repair; when you add in nutrient gaps (B12, iron/ferritin) and inflammatory byproducts, you’ve got a perfect storm for low energy, aches, and low mood. A step-by-step guide to finding your ideal betaine HCl + pepsin dose at meals. Dr. Wentz shares how to determine how many capsules would be most suitable for you, and how to use it safely for best results. When to pause or avoid HCl. It’s not for everyone: if you have active or past peptic ulcers, confirmed H. pylori , current acid overproduction, ingredient sensitivities, or chronic NSAID/steroid use, if you use ongoing PPIs (or you’re weaning), or if you are pregnant/breastfeeding, talk to your clinician first. Simple daily upgrades to raise digestive fire. Eating in a calm state, chewing well, trying diluted lemon water or apple cider vinegar with meals, considering digestive bitters, and assessing thiamine can be surprising helpers for stomach acid and thyroid fatigue. Real-world outcomes and what to expect. In Dr. Wentz’s experience, ~60% of people feel better on HCl, ~33% don’t tolerate it, and ~7% feel no change. Wins often include more energy, less pain/bloating, better mood, smoother bowels, and easier weight balance when digestion finally “clicks.” Be sure to subscribe to the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast so you don’t miss an episode! In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations , Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews gut health expert Steven Wright, founder of Healthy Gut. Steven shares his 15-year healing journey and explains why restrictive elimination diets often fail to resolve the root causes of digestive distress. Together, they explore how low stomach acid, SIBO, histamine overload, and stress contribute to food sensitivities – and how to build a more resilient gut that allows for food freedom. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why endless food elimination often backfires. While cutting out certain foods can help in the short term, staying overly restrictive can harm the microbiome, create nutrient deficiencies, and worsen food reactions over time. Healing requires more than just “the perfect diet.” The overlooked role of stomach acid in gut health. Low stomach acid is common in people with Hashimoto’s and can drive SIBO, reflux, nutrient deficiencies, and ongoing inflammation. Steven explains how simple HCl support can restore digestion, energy, and overall resilience. How histamine intolerance fuels food sensitivities. Symptoms like headaches, rashes, diarrhea, anxiety, or migraines can stem from histamine overload. Steven and Dr. Wentz discuss how mast cells, DAO enzymes, and butyrate help calm inflammation and support histamine tolerance. Why probiotics and prebiotics aren’t enough on their own. A healthy gut requires proper digestion, enzymes, and microbial balance. Butyrate and brush border enzymes may be the missing link in rebuilding tolerance to plants and fibers. Stress, the nervous system, and digestion. Even a perfect diet and supplements won’t work if you’re stuck in “fight-or-flight” mode. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations , Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews certified holistic nutrition counselor Debbie Steinbock about the elemental diet – a powerful but often overlooked tool for healing thyroid-related gut imbalances and SIBO, IBS, and IBD. Debbie shares her personal healing journey from Crohn’s disease, her clinical experience guiding clients with complex autoimmune conditions, and why the elemental diet can succeed where other protocols fall short. Together, they explore how elemental diets feed the body while starving bacterial overgrowth, the pros and cons of different formulas, and how to avoid common mistakes that cause setbacks. Debbie also introduces her Elemental Diet Success Plan, a step-by-step roadmap to help people use this therapy with clarity and confidence. What you’ll learn in this episode: The connection between gut and thyroid health. Many people with hypothyroidism may also have SIBO (up to 50%), and motility issues tied to thyroid disease can fuel bacterial overgrowth. The elemental diet offers a way to reset both digestion and immune reactivity. The elemental diet explained. Debbie breaks down what’s actually in an elemental shake, why it’s considered “pre-digested,” and how it feeds the body while giving the gut time to rest and heal. Why SIBO and IBS are so stubborn. Many protocols fail because they either don’t fully eradicate bacterial overgrowth or they overwhelm a sensitive gut. Debbie explains why the elemental diet can be more effective, with research showing that the majority of people who try it find success in a matter of weeks. Partial vs. full elemental diets. Not everyone needs to do a 100% liquid diet. Debbie describes how partial approaches – paired with “soft, warm, and mushy” foods – can calm flare-ups and support long-term remission for conditions like IBD. Practical tips and side effects to expect. From energy swings and hunger to oral discomfort, Debbie shares what to watch for, how to prepare, and the strategies she teaches in her Elemental Diet Success Plan to minimize setbacks. Why personalization matters. Not all formulas are created equal, and not all patients need the same approach. Debbie shares how to choose between amino-based and semi-elemental shakes, and when each might be best. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations , Dr. Izabella Wentz speaks with registered dietitian Nataliia Sanzo about practical ways to calm the immune system through the gut, address common hair loss drivers in Hashimoto’s, and reintroduce foods safely after an elimination diet. They discuss the stool test markers that matter most (including intestinal permeability and H. pylori ), the often-overlooked roles of blood sugar and bile flow, and how targeted nutrients can support healing. What you’ll learn: Gut health is central to autoimmunity. About 70% of the immune system lives in the gut. When the intestinal lining is irritated or “leaky,” the immune system stays on high alert, which can worsen thyroid symptoms. Nataliia shares which stool test markers matter most, such as short-chain fatty acids and signs of infections (like H. pylori ), and how addressing them can help you shape your health plan. A good stool test saves guesswork. Beyond identifying infections, tests can show whether you’re making enough digestive enzymes or butyrate, and whether bile flow needs support. With that information, you can start with a focused protocol (diet and a few well-chosen supplements), see early improvements, and then transition to food-first maintenance. Food freedom is possible after elimination diets: With gut repair and nutrient repletion, Nataliia shares her step-by-step method for reintroducing foods safely and avoiding unnecessary long-term restriction. Hair loss has common, fixable drivers. Low free-T3, low ferritin (Nataliia aims for ferritin ≥70 ng/mL), zinc/selenium/B-vitamin gaps, high stress hormones, and gut infections are frequent contributors. Supporting T4-to-T3 conversion (through gut and liver care, and in some cases with T3-containing medication), replenishing iron stores, and calming inflammation can make a real difference. Blood sugar and bile flow quietly shape symptoms. Frequent spikes in blood sugar can increase inflammation and reduce T3 activation. Simple steps, such as a protein-forward plate and a 10-minute walk after meals, often help quickly. On the digestion side, healthy bile flow supports fat digestion and absorption of vitamins A, D, E, and K, and helps clear hormone byproducts. Why H. pylori deserves attention: Nataliia shares why this common infection often lingers unnoticed, driving histamine symptoms, food sensitivities, and even hair loss, and the treatment options that can make a profound difference. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations , Dr. Izabella Wentz explores the science behind intestinal permeability (leaky gut), a critical factor in both Hashimoto’s and irritable bowel syndrome. Drawing from her own story and over a decade of clinical research, she shares how healing the gut can lower thyroid antibodies, improve symptoms, and even bring autoimmune conditions into remission. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why intestinal permeability is central to autoimmunity. Dr. Alessio Fasano’s “three-legged stool” theory shows that while we can’t change our genes and don’t always know our exact triggers, we can heal intestinal permeability – often reducing inflammation and lowering thyroid antibodies. Dr. Wentz shares steps that can strengthen your gut lining and calm immune reactivity. Leaky gut often shows up before an autoimmune diagnosis. IBS symptoms frequently appear 5 to 15 years before Hashimoto’s or other autoimmune conditions. Digestive pain, reflux, or bloating may be early warning signs, but intestinal permeability can also exist without gut symptoms. Discover how to recognize these early patterns and begin restoring balance before autoimmunity progresses. Food sensitivities play a big role. Gluten and dairy are the most common culprits, but soy, eggs, nuts, grains, and nightshades can also trigger leaky gut. Dr. Wentz shares her tips on short-term elimination plans, tracking symptom responses, and safely reintroducing foods. Nutrient deficiencies can prevent gut healing. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations , Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Mariza Snyder, bestselling author and women’s health advocate, about one of the most misunderstood life transitions: perimenopause. Her new book, The Perimenopause Revolution , is a love letter to women navigating perimenopause. Together, they explore why this stage often feels like a second puberty, how declining hormones affect the entire body, and the steps women can take to feel like themselves again. What you’ll learn in this episode: Perimenopause is a neuroendocrine shift – a “second puberty.” Dr. Mariza explains how declining communication between the ovaries and brain leads to erratic hormones, destabilizing moods, and physical changes. Just like puberty and postpartum, this season reshapes our physiology and even rewires our brains. Symptoms often begin earlier than expected. While the average age of menopause is around 52, many women feel perimenopause as early as their mid-to-late thirties, especially those with Hashimoto’s, PCOS, endometriosis, or high stress loads. Recognizing the signs early can help shorten the learning curve. Progesterone declines first, and it impacts the brain. Early perimenopause is marked by low progesterone, leading to poor stress tolerance, sleep issues, mood swings, and PMS-like symptoms. Estrogen follows later with its own ripple effects, from hot flashes to joint pain and cognitive changes. Why hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can be a game-changer. Despite fear-mongering, FDA-approved bioidentical hormones can be safe, affordable, and life-changing. Dr. Mariza shares her mother’s story, her own journey, and tips for advocating with doctors to get the support you need. Lifestyle shifts are non-negotiable. From blood sugar balance and strength training to sleep hygiene and daily movement “snacks,” Dr. Mariza outlines the foundations that help women reclaim their energy and protect long-term health during this transition. You’re not broken – you’re transforming. Perimenopause can feel like losing your old self. But with the right tools and support, it’s also an opportunity to rewrite your story and thrive in midlife and beyond. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations , Dr. Wentz interviews Mike Feldstein, founder of Jaspr , about the hidden health effects of indoor air and practical solutions you can use today. Mike explains how modern building practices trap pollutants, why classrooms are a high-impact target for filtration, and the real difference between small retail purifiers and commercial air scrubbers. Tune in to learn about the best choices for indoor air filtering, and how this and other simple steps can relieve conditions like asthma and allergies, help you get a more restful sleep, and support recovery for anyone with autoimmune disease and chronic sensitivities. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why indoor air is often more polluted than outdoor air: Unlike outdoor environments where wind, sunlight, and rain naturally cleanse toxins, our homes trap mold, VOCs, and bacteria inside. As a result, indoor air can be 5 to 10 times dirtier than the air outside, driving brain fog, fatigue, allergies, and asthma. Targeted changes like daily ventilation, high-efficiency air scrubbers, and simple monitors can transform your environment into one that supports healing instead of undermining it. How “sick building syndrome” affects your health: The energy-efficient buildings that started to be built in the 1970s seal in mold, chemicals, and poor ventilation. This hidden trade-off explains why so many people feel unwell in their own homes and workplaces. Why size and scale matter in air purification: Small, store-bought purifiers often work like golf carts – fine for light use, but not built for real health demands. Air scrubbers operate more like SUVs, moving far more air through larger filters and reducing pollutants on a much bigger scale. Choosing the right “vehicle” for your space can mean the difference between slightly cleaner air and truly life-changing results. Everyday toxins may be hiding in your home: Furniture, flooring, cleaning products, fragrances, and even diaper pails can release chemicals that linger in the air. These daily exposures add up, and clearing them can relieve symptoms you may not have connected to your environment. Air scrubbers vs. basic purifiers: Store-bought purifiers may only improve air quality by 10 to 20%, while air scrubbers like Jaspr can reduce pollutants by up to 99%. That level of clean air can be life-changing for those with asthma, autoimmunity, or chronic sleep issues. Clean air as a missing pillar of functional medicine: Just as water filtration and clean diets are now common practice, air quality deserves the same attention. Without it, even the best supplements and protocols may fall short of lasting results. Be sure to subscribe to the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast so you don’t miss an episode! In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations , Dr. Izabella Wentz speaks with naturopathic endocrinologist and bestselling author Dr. Alan Christianson about the controversial role of iodine in thyroid health. While iodine is essential in small amounts, excess intake has been shown to trigger Hashimoto’s, worsen autoimmunity, and disrupt thyroid function. Dr. Christianson shares how a carefully structured low iodine protocol has helped many of his patients reduce antibodies, normalize TSH, and in some cases, taper off thyroid medications. He also explores hidden dietary and lifestyle sources of iodine, why genetics play a role in tolerance, and how supporting nutrients like selenium and vitamin D can protect thyroid health. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why iodine is a double-edged sword for the thyroid. While essential in small amounts, iodine has one of the narrowest therapeutic ranges of any nutrient. Too much can trigger Hashimoto’s, worsen autoimmunity, and cause the thyroid to “shut down,” leading to hypothyroidism. The genetic factor in iodine tolerance. Dr. Christianson explains how some people are adapted to coastal diets rich in iodine, while others with “inland genetics” are much more sensitive. These differences can explain why some people tolerate seaweed and kelp – while others see skyrocketing antibodies. Hidden sources of iodine in your diet and home. Beyond seaweed snacks and iodized salt, high iodine exposure can come from dairy, processed bread, prenatal vitamins, and even personal care products like conditioner and lotion. Identifying these sources is a key step toward healing. How a low-iodine reset can help the thyroid recover. Short-term iodine reduction (below ~100 mcg/day) can give the thyroid space to heal. Dr. Christianson shares research and patient stories showing that many people who stick with the reset see dramatic improvements, from normalizing thyroid labs to lowering antibodies, often within just a few months. When to discuss med changes with your doctor. In some cases, a supervised low-iodine protocol may allow for gradual reductions in thyroid medication. Dr. Christianson notes that studies show many patients can safely lower – and some even stop – their meds, but emphasizes this process must be done cautiously, with close monitoring. The co-nutrients that widen your “safety window.” Selenium, zinc, vitamin D, and iron aren’t optional extras; they’re critical for how your thyroid handles iodine. These nutrients support the enzymes that regulate iodine metabolism and help protect the thyroid from oxidative stress. When they’re low, excess iodine does more damage; when they’re optimized, your thyroid can tolerate a wider range without flaring. autoimmunity. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations , Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews longtime friend and collaborator Christa Orecchio, a clinical and holistic nutritionist with nearly two decades of experience in gut, adrenal, and lung health. They discuss a cutting-edge integrative approach to healing asthma, mold illness, long-COVID lung damage, and respiratory inflammation, with surprising connections to emotional trauma and nervous system regulation. Christa shares how salicylates, environmental toxins, and even repressed grief can lead to persistent lung dysfunction, and how her new lung rejuvenation program combines herbal therapy, postbiotics, trauma healing, and targeted breathwork to reverse symptoms and restore cellular vitality. Tune in to learn more about: Why lung issues go beyond inflammation or allergies: Trauma, mold exposure, antibiotics, smoking or vaping, unresolved grief, and even early childhood infections can create deep dysfunction in the lungs. Addressing them is essential for lasting healing. How environmental toxins silently damage lungs: Everyday exposures such as flame retardants, formaldehyde, pesticides, glyphosate, wildfire smoke, and nanoplastics can scar lung tissue over time. Detox support and air purification become essential, even for those living “clean.” The surprising role of foods and oils in asthma: High-salicylate foods and products including dried fruits, apples, strawberries, plums, tomatoes, cucumbers, coffee, wine, and peppermint oil can trigger respiratory flares. Short elimination trials combined with salt therapy often bring quick relief. The emotional-spiritual link to breathing: Unprocessed grief and trauma can lodge in the lungs, showing up as asthma, chronic cough, or shallow breathing. Healing through grief work, somatic therapies, or homeopathy can restore vitality and ease of breath. Herbs and nutrients that rebuild the lungs: Lungwort, golden seal, lotus root, boswellia, DNA and RNA tissue factors, postbiotics, and mitochondrial supports such as CoQ10, PQQ, and L-carnitine help restore tissue integrity, reduce inflammation, and strengthen resilience. Why nervous system healing is non-negotiable: Breathwork, EFT, and somatic trauma therapies shift the body out of fight-or-flight and into parasympathetic rest-and-heal mode. This nervous system reset unlocks true recovery for both lungs and thyroid. Be sure to subscribe to the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast so you don’t miss an episode! In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations , Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Aimie Apigian, physician and author of The Biology of Trauma . Together, they explore how unresolved trauma – often overlooked in thyroid care – can predispose the body to autoimmunity, create nervous system imbalances, and keep people stuck in chronic fatigue or thyroid symptoms despite “doing everything right.” Dr. Apigian shares her journey from biochemistry and foster parenting to becoming a leading trauma expert, as well as her own experience with autoimmunity. She explains how trauma physiology differs from stress, why unresolved attachment wounds fuel thyroid issues, and what tools can help rewire the nervous system for safety and healing. What you’ll learn in this episode: Trauma isn’t always what you think. Many people dismiss their experiences because they didn’t have “big T” trauma. Dr. Aimie explains how even subtle or forgotten childhood events can rewire the nervous system, making the body feel unsafe and setting the stage for autoimmunity. Autoimmunity can be a trauma response. The body’s immune system reflects what the nervous system has learned: “it’s not safe to be me.” This creates a biology of trauma that keeps us in fight, flight, or freeze, driving thyroid imbalances and chronic fatigue. Why stress management isn’t enough. Breathwork, meditation, or cold plunges may help stress, but if the body is in trauma physiology, those tools can backfire. Healing requires working within your body’s capacity and building a “window of tolerance” for safety. How attachment wounds can affect thyroid health. From not being held enough as a baby to learning to suppress needs in childhood, these early experiences train us to abandon ourselves. Dr. Aimie shares how these patterns directly connect to autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s. Signs you might have stored trauma. Feeling constantly unsafe, being stuck in cycles of overwhelm, having unexplained fatigue, or always waiting for the “next shoe to drop” are all red flags that your body may be carrying unresolved trauma. Tools that create a biology of safety. Somatic practices, EMDR, neurofeedback, and Dr. Aimie’s five somatic self-practices can shift the nervous system out of trauma and into safety – often in under five minutes – without needing to rely on substances or old coping strategies. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations , Dr. Izabella Wentz sits down with integrative nurse practitioner Lexi Yoo , founder of Yoo Direct Health, to explore unconventional, but highly effective, therapies for Hashimoto’s and other autoimmune conditions. From low-dose naltrexone and hormone optimization to cutting-edge peptides, ozone therapy, and semaglutide (Ozempic), Lexi shares how she personalizes care to help patients finally see progress when standard treatments fall short. They also dive into how to measure true healing using labs and symptom trackers, and why these innovative therapies should be accessible to everyday patients – not just biohackers. Whether you’ve hit a plateau or are just starting your healing journey, this episode offers fresh, practical tools to help you move the needle on recovery. Tune in to learn more: Low-dose naltrexone (LDN) is a powerful, underused tool for modulating the immune system in Hashimoto’s. Lexi shares how she tailors dosing based on individual tolerance and symptoms, starting as low as 0.25 mg in sensitive cases. It can help improve mood, reduce inflammation and pain, regulate appetite, and support sleep – all of which are commonly disrupted in thyroid and autoimmune disorders. Peptides like BPC-157, KPV, and Larazotide offer next-level support for gut healing and immune balance. These naturally-occurring compounds repair gut lining, reduce inflammatory triggers, and can be used strategically in gut protocols alongside supplements like glutamine and zinc carnosine. Lexi shares how using these together can accelerate healing in patients with Hashimoto’s, IBS, SIBO, and even post-surgical recovery. Wellbutrin and semaglutide (Ozempic) aren’t just for depression or weight loss – they’re strategic tools for Hashimoto’s healing. Lexi explains how combining these medications with LDN can quiet food noise, stabilize dopamine and insulin signaling, and reduce inflammation that worsens autoimmune flares. These therapies can also support emotional resilience, especially in women juggling hormones, motherhood, careers, and chronic fatigue. Testosterone replacement can be a game-changer for women with Hashimoto’s – and no, it won’t make you look like a bodybuilder. Lexi explains how testosterone supports the thymus gland, improves libido and energy, and can even reduce thyroid antibodies. She discusses various delivery methods including pellets, creams, and new oral options, emphasizing that personalized dosing and monitoring are key. Ozone therapy is an emerging powerhouse for lowering thyroid antibodies and enhancing mitochondrial health. By delivering oxygen in a unique oxidative form, IV ozone helps improve blood flow, reduce inflammation, and support immune function – especially in patients with chronic infections, high TPO levels, or autoimmunity-related fatigue. Lexi also shares how she pairs ozone with UV light, rectal insufflation, and topical applications for targeted healing. Semaglutide (Ozempic) can be a safe and strategic option for Hashimoto’s when used properly. Lexi clarifies the misunderstood connection between GLP-1 agonists and thyroid health, and how this medication – when supported by labs, nutrition, and exercise – can reduce systemic inflammation and support metabolic healing. She’s also seen benefits for PCOS, food addiction, joint pain, and even fertility in Hashimoto’s patients. In this episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews integrative pediatrician Dr. Sheila Kilbane, who guided Izabella to get her son 100% eczema free, about the often-overlooked root causes of childhood eczema. Dr. Kilbane shares how a combination of gut-focused strategies and targeted topical therapies can transform the lives of children suffering from chronic eczema without extreme elimination diets. Listeners will gain insights into the link between eczema, histamine, food allergies, and the skin microbiome, as well as the importance of supporting detox, digestion, and the immune system as a whole. We’ll discuss: How Dr. Kilbane helped Izabella’s son become 100% eczema free. Izabella’s son developed eczema around age 1. She consulted with numerous experts to no avail, until working with Dr. Kilbane. Within weeks, her son’s eczema improved by 80% and after completing recommended tests/treatment, the eczema vanished within days. Why eczema needs a “both/and” approach. Eczema healing often requires both external skin support and internal gut healing. Combining gentle topical treatments (including a compounded antimicrobial cream with diluted steroids) with targeted nutrition and gut support can reduce symptoms and prevent flare-ups. Relying solely on diet or creams can lead to frustration, while this integrative strategy supports faster, more lasting healing. Histamine overload may be at the root. Beyond itchy skin, excess histamine can cause sleep issues, irritability, poor appetite, and mood swings, especially in kids with eczema. Environmental allergies, gut dysbiosis, and Staph on the skin can all increase histamine levels. Short-term antihistamines, quercetin, or vitamin C can offer fast relief while deeper root causes are addressed. Why elimination diets alone aren’t the answer. While food sensitivities can play a role in eczema, extreme elimination diets, especially for picky eaters, often backfire, leading to nutrient deficiencies/stress. In many cases, kids actually tolerate more foods once the skin barrier and gut are healed. Rather than removing more foods, Dr. Kilbane’s protocol focuses on restoring gut integrity and calming inflammation. How the Aron Protocol can stop flare-ups in their tracks. This compounded topical can reduce Staph bacteria and inflammation on the skin, calming eczema flares without the rebound many parents fear. Used alongside gut healing, it allows for longer-term remission and more resilient skin. Gentle changes can make a big difference. Simple tools, like filtered bath water, dye-free detergents, probiotics, enzymes, and nutrient-rich fats, can reduce inflammation and restore the skin barrier. Even changing how and when kids bathe can make a difference. Her protocols emphasize layering small changes rather than overwhelming families with a massive overhaul. Food allergies may fade when the skin heals. A damaged skin barrier can actually trigger food sensitivities, especially when children scratch food particles into open eczema patches. Once the skin is healed and histamine levels drop, kids often become more tolerant to foods that previously caused issues. In some cases, even anaphylactic food allergies can be re-evaluated safely under medical supervision. Tune in to learn more about treating eczema from the inside out! In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Carly Brown, a wellness entrepreneur and thyroid cancer thriver who took her diagnosis as an invitation to dig deeper into root cause healing. Carly shares how she used daily juicing, emotional therapy, detoxification, and dental intervention to drastically reduce her tumor before choosing thyroidectomy on her own terms. Carly’s story is a testament to resilience, integrative medicine, and the importance of advocating for yourself every step of the way. She also dives into the tools she continues to use to stay cancer-free, including molecular hydrogen water, CrossFit, and combined T3/T4 hormone replacement. Tune in to learn more about: ✅How Carly reframed her diagnosis and chose healing over fear. Instead of identifying with the illness, Carly made a conscious decision to say “I am healing” rather than “I have cancer.” This subtle but powerful shift helped her stay focused on recovery and resilience. She used affirmations and mindset work as the foundation for her healing journey, reminding herself daily that her body was capable of vibrant health. ✅The juicing protocol Carly used to support detox and cellular regeneration. Her daily anti-inflammatory routine consisting of 64 oz. of raw, organic, cold-pressed vegetable juice made with ginger, turmeric, garlic, beets, green apple, and more helped her regain energy, shrink her tumor, and launch her own juice business, Alchemy. ✅A root canal infection was the hidden root cause of her cancer. A cone beam scan revealed a decade-old jaw infection from past dental trauma and root canals – silently suppressing her immune system and likely fueling cancer growth. Multiple oral surgeries cleared the infection, bringing back her energy and triggering rapid tumor shrinkage. ✅The emotional healing that was just as critical as the physical. Carly worked with therapists and healing practitioners to process suppressed grief, trauma, and inherited emotional wounds, especially surrounding her father’s sudden death and her own perfectionism. She emphasizes that unresolved emotional pain can manifest physically, and that healing often requires looking inward. Tools like guided therapy, ancestral healing, and even plant medicine helped her release stored emotions that had been weighing on her health. ✅Why she eventually chose thyroidectomy, and how she did it on her own terms. Although she initially declined surgery, Carly returned to the idea 18 months later after dramatically improving her health through nutrition, detox, and emotional healing. She entered surgery stronger, calmer, and more informed – an empowered patient instead of a fearful one. Her case is a beautiful example of how holistic and conventional approaches can work together, especially when we take the time to listen to our bodies and build the right support team. ✅Thriving post-thyroidectomy: Carly’s protocol for hormone balance and vibrant energy. Carly now takes both T3 and T4 thyroid hormones and works closely with a functional provider to maintain optimal levels. She also follows a gluten-free, high-protein diet, drinks molecular hydrogen water, strength trains several times a week, and continues regular detox practices like juicing and clinic retreats. These habits have helped her not just manage life after thyroid removal, but truly thrive with more energy, muscle tone, and purpose than ever before. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz shares the surprising discovery that became the foundation of her bestselling book Hashimoto’s Protocol: a simple liver reset that helps 80% of Hashimoto’s patients feel better within two weeks. She explains why toxins are such a hidden driver of thyroid symptoms, how the liver plays a central role in converting thyroid hormones, and why conventional detoxes often backfire. Listeners will gain actionable strategies to reduce toxic exposures, support natural detox pathways, and use gentle nutrients and foods to restore energy, focus, and balance. What you’ll learn in this episode: ✅Why toxins are such a hidden driver of Hashimoto’s symptoms. From environmental exposures like pollution, jet fuel, mold, and fluoride, to hidden household sources such as cleaning products and plastics, our bodies are constantly dealing with toxins. For those with Hashimoto’s, this toxic load can overwhelm detox pathways, leading to fatigue, brain fog, pain, skin issues, and stubborn weight gain. ✅The “aha moment” that changed my approach. When my most sensitive clients weren’t responding to diets or supplements, I tried targeted liver support. Within two weeks, their brain fog lifted, energy returned, and pain diminished. This confirmed that liver congestion and toxin buildup play a central role in keeping many Hashimoto’s patients sick. ✅The four key elements of my liver reset process. Healing begins by reducing toxic exposures (makeup, candles, plastics, cleaning chemicals), removing common trigger foods (gluten, dairy, soy, sugar, alcohol), incorporating healing foods (cruciferous veggies, beets, blueberries, sprouts, lemon water), and supporting natural detox pathways like sweating, hydration, and bowel movements. ✅Why supporting the liver is better than “forceful detox.” Harsh cleanses, chelation, or high-dose supplements can overwhelm the body and worsen symptoms. Gentle liver support using nutrients like NAC, magnesium, and milk thistle – paired with sweating, hydration, and fiber – works with the body’s natural systems for safe, effective toxin clearance. ✅How this protocol improves thyroid function. The liver is essential for converting T4 to active T3, clearing out estrogen metabolites, and reducing the backlog of toxins that sabotage energy and mood. By supporting the liver, we improve hormone balance, reduce antibodies, and create an environment where Hashimoto’s remission is possible. ✅Real-world results from thousands of clients (and myself). From reduced joint pain and brain fog to improved labs and weight loss, this simple process has created life-changing outcomes. I personally experienced clearer skin, more energy, and even emotional release after going through the liver reset. Tune in to learn how a gentle liver reset can help you reclaim your energy and move closer to remission. What do MTHFR, thyroid disease, gallbladder removal, and fatty liver all have in common? In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations , Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews nutritionist and methylation expert Lisa Windbourn, who specializes in helping women with MTHFR gene variations, liver dysfunction, and no gallbladder, feel better using methylation-focused nutrition. They explore the impact of sluggish methylation on thyroid health, detoxification, and bile flow, and how to support your body naturally even if you have complex symptoms. Lisa breaks down the role of folate (vitamin B9), how to safely choose B vitamins, and food-based strategies to help you feel energized, clear, and on the path to optimal wellness. Tune in to learn more about: What the MTHFR gene variation really means, and why it’s not a mutation: Lisa explains how this common genetic difference affects folate activation and detoxification. You’ll learn why this variation doesn’t guarantee symptoms and how stress, toxins, and lifestyle choices determine whether symptoms appear. How MTHFR relates to thyroid, liver, and gallbladder issues: This single enzyme plays a key role in hormone clearance, bile flow, and nutrient absorption. Sluggish methylation can increase the risk for Hashimoto’s, fatty liver, and digestive challenges, even in people following a clean diet. Why folic acid may be making things worse: Folic acid, the synthetic version of vitamin B9 found in many processed foods and supplements, can interfere with detox and methylation in people with MTHFR. Lisa shares how to spot it on labels and how to choose more effective forms like folate, methylfolate, or folinic acid. How to personalize your supplement approach: Not everyone does well with high-dose methylfolate. Lisa explains how your mood tendencies, such as anxiety or low energy, can guide your choices. You’ll also learn about gentler options like riboflavin, glycine, and TMG. How to support detox naturally, even without a gallbladder: Lisa offers practical tools, including salt flushes, breathwork, food-based nutrients, and bile support. These simple habits can help reduce inflammation, improve energy, and restore digestive function without intense protocols. Why balance is better than perfection: From enjoying dessert to skipping extreme wellness trends, Lisa and Izabella talk about real-life healing. They remind us that joy, flexibility, and self-awareness are just as important as supplements and lab tests. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations , Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews holistic nutritionist Divya Gupta about a rarely discussed but deeply important topic in thyroid health: the liver and gallbladder connection. Divya shares her own story of gallbladder removal and Hashimoto’s diagnosis, and how it transformed her career and healing philosophy. Together, they explore how impaired bile flow, liver overload, and fat malabsorption can all disrupt thyroid function, and what you can do to support your body, especially if your gallbladder has been removed. Tune in to learn how practical tools like bitters, beets, ox bile, TUDCA, functional lab testing, and strategic food swaps can be game-changers when it comes to supporting your gallbladder, thyroid, and overall wellness. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why gallbladder issues can be a hidden trigger for thyroid symptoms: Even subtle signs like shoulder pain, sticky stools, or poor fat digestion may indicate early gallbladder dysfunction, and it’s more common than you think in those with Hashimoto’s. How bile production supports your thyroid at every level: Bile isn’t just for digesting fats, it helps clear toxins, absorb fat-soluble vitamins, and even plays a role in T4 to T3 conversion and gut health. Impaired bile flow can sabotage thyroid function silently. What happens after gallbladder removal and how to thrive without one: Divya shares her firsthand experience and offers practical strategies to support digestion and hormone health, even after surgery – including the use of ox bile, bitters, TUDCA, and targeted nutrients. The thyroid-liver connection that often gets missed: The liver helps activate thyroid hormone and regulate cholesterol. Yet many people with "normal labs" still benefit from liver support, especially when fatigue, brain fog, or inflammation linger. Why high cholesterol isn’t always the enemy, but can be a clue: Rather than jumping to statins, Divya explores what elevated cholesterol can reveal about thyroid dysfunction, sluggish bile flow, estrogen metabolism, and more. Everyday strategies to support your gallbladder and feel better: From lemon water and dandelion tea to gentle liver detox, bitters, and beet recipes, this episode is packed with tools to boost bile flow, improve nutrient absorption, and support thyroid healing from the ground up. Tune in to learn: Why perimenopause feels unpredictable and what’s actually happening hormonally. It’s not just a slow decline in estrogen. Dr. Jen explains that during perimenopause, estrogen can spike and crash wildly, while progesterone steadily drops. This hormonal mismatch is why symptoms like mood swings, anxiety, and irregular cycles can appear seemingly out of nowhere and why the traditional “wait and see” approach doesn’t work. The overlooked role of cortisol, and why stress hits harder now. As progesterone levels drop, its natural calming effect on the nervous system fades. Dr. Jen highlights how women in perimenopause become more sensitive to stress, and how cortisol spikes can drive insomnia, anxiety, and fatigue. She emphasizes daily tools like HRV monitoring, breathwork, and parasympathetic support to calm the system and rebalance hormones. Blood sugar swings aren’t just about food; they’re a hormone issue. Perimenopause shifts metabolic function, increasing insulin resistance even in healthy women. Dr. Jen connects the dots between blood sugar instability and symptoms like belly weight, brain fog, and energy crashes, and shares why protein-forward meals and strength training are non-negotiable for midlife women. Sleep isn’t just rest, it’s hormonal therapy. Poor sleep amplifies cortisol, disrupts blood sugar, and worsens estrogen/progesterone balance. Dr. Jen underscores how addressing the cause of poor sleep, like stress, late-night eating, or alcohol, can unlock profound hormonal improvements without starting with medications. Progesterone might be the missing piece for mood, sleep, and calm. As levels drop in perimenopause, many women experience anxiety, restlessness, and disrupted sleep. Dr. Jen explains why bioidentical progesterone, particularly in oral form, can be a safe, effective way to restore balance and help women feel like themselves again. Magnesium can be a game-changer for people with Hashimoto’s and hypothyroidism, but only if you’re using the right form for your body. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz shares her experience with magnesium deficiency, how to spot it even when labs are normal, and why forms like magnesium glycinate can make symptoms worse in some people. She explains how magnesium connects to thyroid health, and why magnesium citrate and Epsom salt baths are often the best choices for those with autoimmune thyroid conditions. Tune in to learn: Why more supplements aren’t always better: A client of Dr. Wentz was taking 12 different supplements but continued to struggle with anxiety, insomnia, and migraines. Once her magnesium deficiency was addressed with the right form of magnesium, nearly all of her symptoms resolved (and she stopped the other 12 supplements). This shows how one targeted intervention can be more effective than a whole shelf of supplements. How to spot magnesium deficiency even when your labs look normal: Muscle cramps, constipation, sensitivity to noise, and menstrual pain are just a few of the common signs that often go unnoticed. Since conventional testing may not catch low magnesium levels, Dr. Wentz shares a more symptom-based approach. The connection between magnesium and thyroid function: People with Hashimoto’s are more likely to be low in magnesium. This nutrient has been linked to higher thyroid antibodies and an increased risk of hypothyroidism. It also supports mood, energy, digestion, and overall immune health. Why magnesium citrate can be a helpful tool for thyroid-related symptoms: This form is often best for those dealing with constipation, anxiety, and cramps. Dr. Wentz also shares clinical findings showing that magnesium citrate may help normalize thyroid appearance on ultrasound. Why magnesium glycinate isn’t the right fit for everyone: Even though it’s popular, this form can trigger anxiety, joint pain, or panic in some individuals, Dr. Wentz explains who may need to avoid it and what to try instead. How Epsom salt can improve magnesium levels without taking a supplement: This topical option bypasses digestion and can quickly relieve joint pain, headaches, and stress. Dr. Wentz shares how to use it. Be sure to subscribe to the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast so you don’t miss an episode! In this episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Shawn Tassone, America's Holistic Gynecologist and author of The Hormone Balance Bible . Together, they explore how archetypes like The Mother, The Nun, and The Underdog can help women understand hormonal imbalances in a more personal and empowering way. They also dive into testosterone therapy for women, the myths surrounding hormone replacement, the limitations of conventional birth control, and Dr. Tassone’s SHINES protocol, a holistic roadmap to hormone balance. Tune in to learn: Dr. Tassone created hormonal archetypes to make hormone healing easier to relate to. Instead of just reading lab results, women can see their patterns reflected in archetypes like the Mother, the Underdog, and the Nun, and learn how their imbalances can affect their emotions. The three most common hormone issues Dr. Tassone sees are low testosterone, estrogen deficiency, and subclinical hypothyroidism. These imbalances often show up as fatigue, low libido, mood swings, or weight gain. Many women are told their labs look fine, but a closer look reveals the real story. Testosterone is not just a “male hormone.” In fact, it’s the most abundant hormone in a woman’s body. Dr. Tassone explains that women can still have symptoms like brain fog and lack of motivation when their levels are at the low end of “normal.” Just nudging them to the right level can bring a huge shift in energy and drive. Many women still worry that hormone therapy causes cancer, but that fear is based on outdated data. Dr. Tassone breaks down how the original study that sparked this concern used synthetic hormones, and newer research shows that bioidentical estrogen may actually improve longevity and reduce disease risk. Birth control pills are often used to mask hormonal symptoms rather than resolve them. Dr. Tassone sees young women with low libido, mood changes, or fatigue caused by the very medication meant to help. He encourages a deeper look at root causes, especially when birth control is being used for anything other than contraception. Dr. Tassone’s SHINES protocol goes beyond medication. By including elements like spirituality, nutrient support, movement, and even energetic therapies, it gives women multiple paths to feel better. In Episode 51 of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Lauren Noel, founder of Shine Natural Medicine, to explore the surprising overlap between ADHD and thyroid dysfunction. Together, they unpack how symptoms like brain fog, anxiety, fatigue, and mood swings often stem from deeper imbalances in the gut, immune system, nervous system, and environment. Dr. Noel shares her functional medicine framework for uncovering the root causes behind ADHD and thyroid symptoms, from childhood trauma and gut dysbiosis to heavy metals, mold, and hormone imbalances. This episode is packed with clinical pearls and real-world healing stories that will inspire anyone who’s been told “it’s just in your head.” What you’ll learn in this episode: Thyroid dysfunction and ADHD share many symptoms, and may even be connected. Low thyroid function can mimic or worsen ADHD symptoms like brain fog, mood swings, and anxiety. Dr. Noel explains how even suboptimal thyroid labs can significantly affect cognition and emotional regulation. For many women, optimizing thyroid health leads to improvements in focus, motivation, and energy. Childhood trauma and stress can lay the foundation for chronic health issues later in life. Emotional trauma and chronic stress can show up as brain fog, digestive issues, and mood instability decades later. Dr. Noel explains how early emotional wounds dysregulate the nervous system – and why therapies like EMDR and neurofeedback are crucial to true healing, not just symptom relief. The gut-brain connection plays a key role in both ADHD and thyroid dysfunction. Chronic digestive issues, food sensitivities, and gut infections like H. pylori and SIBO can contribute to systemic inflammation that impacts the brain and thyroid. Dr. Noel walks through the testing she uses to identify gut imbalances and the protocols that support both digestive and mental wellness. Heavy metals, mold, and environmental toxins are common in both thyroid and ADHD clients. Dr. Noel often sees exposure to mercury, lead, mold, and chemical sensitivities as hidden drivers behind fatigue, neurological symptoms, and thyroid resistance. She shares her process for identifying these toxic burdens and outlines how to detox safely through drainage and liver support. Standard ADHD treatments often miss the mark for women. Stimulant medications might provide temporary focus, but they don’t resolve the deeper imbalances, and may even worsen anxiety or sleep issues. Dr. Noel discusses natural support strategies like amino acids, adaptogens, blood sugar balancing, and targeted nootropics to support long-term brain health. A personalized approach can make all the difference. There’s no one-size-fits-all protocol for ADHD or thyroid issues. Dr. Noel emphasizes the power of testing (not guessing), building trust with your body, and making sustainable lifestyle changes such as eating for blood sugar balance, reducing histamine, and healing the limbic system, to support mood, memory, and metabolism. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations , Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Ginny Mahar, also known as the Hypothyroid Chef, about the most common pitfalls people face when trying to follow a thyroid-friendly diet – and how to avoid them. Ginny shares her personal healing story and the foundational food and lifestyle principles that helped her turn her health around. Listeners will learn how to identify their own food sensitivities, overcome perfectionism and overwhelm, and adopt simple, sustainable habits that support thyroid healing… without the stress and burnout. The episode also touches on the importance of mindset, community, and looking beyond food to help you thrive and embrace a holistic approach to healing. Tune in to learn more about making your thyroid-friendly lifestyle joyful and practical! What you’ll learn in this episode: Why identifying your own food triggers is not only essential, but empowering. While common culprits like gluten, dairy, soy, grains, and nightshades can drive inflammation, Ginny emphasizes the importance of personal experimentation to uncover what truly works for your body – and what doesn’t. Using flexible frameworks like Paleo or AIP as a starting point, she encourages a “detective” mindset to find your ideal food roadmap. The perfectionism trap: why “all or nothing” can stall your healing. Many thyroid patients feel they must follow their diet flawlessly to succeed. But the stress of trying to “get it perfect” can backfire. Ginny shares how defining your non-negotiables (like gluten) while allowing for personal “wiggle room” can relieve pressure and make healing more sustainable . How to cut through the online noise. Carnivore, keto, oxalates, AIP… with so much conflicting advice, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Ginny shares how to tune out confusion, identify thyroid-savvy experts, and reconnect with what your body needs – not what’s trending. She encourages simplifying your inputs, trusting your intuition, and staying grounded in what actually works for you . Start simple and make healing sustainable. Instead of chasing complex protocols or recipes with 20 ingredients, Ginny recommends focusing on nutrient-dense staples like organic produce, clean proteins, and healthy fats. Her strategy: build a weekly foundation with batch-prepped basics like roasted veggies, shredded protein, and a go-to sauce for fast, nourishing meals. The power of mindset and community. Reframing your journey from deprivation to empowerment – focusing on what you can eat, celebrating small wins, and leaning on a supportive community – can radically shift your relationship with food, healing, and yourself. Ginny walks through mindset tools like “tiny celebrations” and the joy of finding thyroid-safe foods you love, plus the importance of not doing it alone. Why lifestyle habits matter as much as food. Thyroid healing isn’t just about what’s on your plate. Ginny explains the eight foundational rituals – from sleep and self-care to stress reduction and gut repair – that build energy, calm the immune system, and support long-term wellness. Her “8 Daily Rituals” framework offers a doable, whole-life approach to healing, one habit at a time. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations , Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Jenn Simmons, a breast cancer surgeon turned functional medicine leader. After overcoming her own health crisis, Dr. Jen now works to revolutionize how breast cancer is diagnosed, treated, and prevented. They discuss why mammograms aren’t saving lives, how modern imaging tools like QT ultrasounds offer a safer option, and why root causes like gut health, toxins, and dental infections must be addressed for true prevention. You’ll also hear practical steps every woman can take to build breast health and resilience, starting today. Tune in to learn more about: Why the “tumor is the problem” mindset misses the mark. In conventional medicine, breast cancer is treated by attacking the tumor, but Dr. Jen explains why the tumor is actually a symptom of deeper imbalances that must be addressed for true healing. She now uses functional medicine to identify what’s fueling the tumor in the first place, from immune dysfunction to hormone disruption. The surprising risk factors that aren’t discussed enough. Gut health, constipation, mold exposure, mercury amalgams, and hidden oral infections like root canals and cavitations can all create an environment that fuels breast cancer… yet they’re often overlooked. Dr. Jenn walks through how to test for each and why addressing them is critical to changing your internal terrain. Why conventional breast cancer screening isn’t saving lives. Decades of data show that mammograms aren’t reducing breast cancer deaths or saving breasts – and may even lead to overtreatment and harm. Dr. Jen breaks down the statistics and explains why self-awareness, targeted testing like the AURIA tears test, and safer imaging options offer a better path forward. The breast-friendly screening technology you need to know about. Learn about QT ultrasound, a breakthrough imaging tool that offers safe, painless, radiation-free breast screening – and how it compares to mammograms and MRI. Dr. Jenn has opened centers offering this advanced scan, and shares how it’s changing the way women approach screening with less fear and more clarity. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations , Dr. Izabella Wentz speaks with hormone expert and bestselling author Dr. Anna Cabeca about how to thrive during perimenopause and menopause. Dr. Anna, also known as The Girlfriend Doctor, shares her story of reversing early menopause and infertility, and explains how women can reclaim their energy, libido, and joy in midlife and beyond. Together, they explore simple and effective strategies for balancing hormones naturally, including keto-alkaline eating, urine pH testing, topical DHEA, and the underestimated power of oxytocin. This episode is filled with actionable insights to help women transition into their “second spring” with confidence, vitality, and pleasure. Tune in to learn more about: Menopause is natural, but suffering doesn’t have to be part of it. Many women are told to brace for hot flashes, mood swings, and weight gain as inevitable. Dr. Anna explains why menopause is a transition, not a disease, and how targeted support for hormones, inflammation, and adrenal health can help you thrive in your “second spring.” The Keto-Green method balances metabolism and mood, especially during perimenopause. Traditional keto diets can worsen symptoms for some women due to increased acidity and stress. Dr. Anna’s approach combines a modified keto approach with alkalinizing foods, intermittent fasting, and hormone-friendly nutrients to support brain health, insulin sensitivity, and energy without the typical keto crash. Your urine pH and ketones tell the real story. Instead of guessing how your body is responding, Dr. Anna recommends simple at-home urine testing for pH and ketones. These biomarkers reveal how food, stress, sleep, and even emotions affect your physiology, and guide personalized adjustments for hormone and metabolic balance. Oxytocin is a missing piece in the hormone conversation. Often overlooked, this “connection hormone” helps regulate cortisol, improve mood, and restore vitality. Dr. Anna highlights how pleasure, laughter, and even playing with pets can naturally raise oxytocin, shifting the body out of burnout and into healing. Topical DHEA for v@ginal rejuvenation can be a game changer From discomfort and dryness to incontinence and low libido, vaginal atrophy can erode quality of life. Dr. Anna explains how products like JULVA®, along with DHEA and pelvic floor support, can restore comfort, sensation, and confidence, at any age. Yes, you can reverse premature ovarian failure. Dr Anna’s story proves it. After being told she was infertile and in early menopause, she reversed her symptoms, conceived naturally at 41, and now helps other women do the same. In this episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews integrative psychiatrist Dr. Achina Stein and patient advocate Silvia Covelli, co-founders of the Healing Depression Project, to explore a revolutionary new approach to treating depression. They reveal how depression often stems from underlying root causes like gut dysfunction, inflammation, trauma, and nutrient deficiencies. Listeners will gain valuable insights into why the conventional model falls short and how addressing biology and lifestyle can lead to real emotional transformation. Listeners will learn about: Conventional psychiatry often misses root causes Depression is typically treated with a diagnosis and a prescription — often skipping deeper evaluation. Labs like B12, iron, vitamin D, and thyroid markers are rarely run, even though deficiencies can cause depression-like symptoms. Dr. Stein notes, “We used to do this routinely. Now it's fallen off the radar.” Inflammation is the true root — not a chemical imbalance Neurotransmitter imbalances are a downstream effect of chronic inflammation. Dr. Stein emphasizes the need to investigate inflammatory triggers like poor gut health, nutrient deficiencies, mold toxicity, and hormonal imbalances — especially during perimenopause and postpartum. Mold toxicity is a hidden and devastating trigger Over half of the Healing Depression Project participants had elevated mold toxins — often without visible mold in their environment. Symptoms ranged from depression and anxiety to fatigue and skin rashes. Mold exposure requires immediate detox support, often with binders, before any other treatment can succeed. Therapeutic ketogenic diet led to remission in 50% of participants In just 26 days, half of the program’s participants — who had treatment-resistant depression for an average of 25 years — reached full remission using a gluten-free, dairy-free ketogenic diet paired with foundational lifestyle changes like sleep hygiene, movement, and meditation. Psychodrama therapy offered powerful trauma release Ten days of immersive group-based psychodrama provided the equivalent of 50+ hours of traditional therapy. Participants processed and rewrote core traumatic experiences, contributing significantly to emotional breakthroughs. Sustainable recovery requires daily action Depression healing isn’t passive — it requires intentional shifts in daily habits. Silvia Covelli emphasizes: “This isn’t a magic pill. It’s a system. But when you commit, it changes everything.” Supportive nutrients and testing are essential Tools like betaine HCl, bile salts, selenium, zinc, and testing for hormone imbalances, mold toxins, and gut dysbiosis were critical in individualizing care. The team emphasizes personalization and ongoing support after the in-person retreat. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations , Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. David Jockers, an expert in functional nutrition, gut health, and mitochondrial medicine. Together, they explore the intricate connection between gut inflammation and thyroid dysfunction, breaking down the gut-liver-thyroid axis and why mitochondrial health is often the missing piece in healing. Dr. Jockers shares his insights into how the gut microbiome contributes to thyroid hormone activation and why common protocols like keto and intermittent fasting may not work for everyone, especially without foundational healing steps like improving sleep, digestion, and mitochondrial function. The discussion also dives into practical, research-backed strategies that support metabolic flexibility and reduce thyroid antibodies, including the use of postbiotics, immunoglobulins, and nutrient therapies. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why your thyroid symptoms might be a gut problem in disguise. Even if you’re producing enough thyroid hormone, poor gut health can block the critical T4-to-T3 conversion needed for energy, mood, and metabolism. Dr. Jockers explains how gut inflammation and microbiome imbalances often go undetected and how supporting the gut can unlock better thyroid function. When your cells go into “wartime mode,” your thyroid pays the price. Chronic stress, infections, or environmental toxins can flip the mitochondria, your body’s energy producers, into a defensive, low-energy state. This cell danger response damages the gut lining, fuels autoimmunity, and halts healing unless reversed through targeted mitochondrial support. You could have leaky gut, even if your digestion seems fine. Many people with thyroid conditions have silent intestinal permeability, driving inflammation and autoimmunity. Dr. Wentz shares how symptoms like brain fog, anxiety, or infertility may actually stem from gut damage that began years before a Hashimoto’s diagnosis. Bone broth isn’t a gut cure-all; root causes matter. While nutrients like glutamine or collagen can soothe the gut lining, they won’t fix what’s breaking it down. Dr. Jockers highlights overlooked drivers like vagus nerve dysfunction, parasites, poor stomach acid, or EMFs, and why deep healing starts with identifying and removing those triggers. Mitochondrial nutrients can be a game-changer if you start them early. Supplements like butyrate, magnesium, carnitine, and immunoglobulins can help repair the gut lining, restore energy, and reduce thyroid antibodies. Supporting cellular energy is often the first step in getting out of burnout and finally feeling like yourself again. Keto and fasting can help, but only when your body’s ready. These popular strategies can backfire if you have adrenal fatigue, poor digestion, or constipation. Dr. Jockers and Dr. Wentz stress the importance of building metabolic flexibility gradually, starting with sleep, digestion, and blood sugar regulation before jumping into advanced protocols. Tune in to learn more about the root causes of thyroid dysfunction, the importance of gut and mitochondrial repair, and how to personalize healing strategies for lasting energy and resilience. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations , Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Robin Urekar, a naturopathic doctor specializing in thyroid health and autoimmunity. Together, they uncover the often-overlooked truth about thyroid antibodies — why they matter, what they reveal about the progression of Hashimoto’s, and how to lower them naturally. Drawing from both personal and clinical experience, Dr. Wentz and Dr. Urekar explain how symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, fertility issues, and mood disorders can persist even when thyroid hormone levels look “normal” — and why addressing thyroid antibodies is essential for long-term healing. They dive into the hidden triggers behind elevated thyroid antibodies — and what you can start doing today to turn things around, help support your immune system, and bring those antibodies down. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why thyroid antibodies matter more than you think: Thyroid antibodies aren’t just diagnostic markers — they’re active players in autoimmune thyroid disease. Elevated levels can indicate how aggressive the autoimmune process is, and they often drive symptoms like fatigue, inflammation, and brain fog, even when hormone levels look “normal.” Symptoms beyond the thyroid – what antibodies can really cause: High thyroid antibodies have been linked to a surprising range of symptoms — from anxiety, insomnia, and infertility to joint pain, cognitive issues, and even increased risks for thyroid and breast cancer. Recognizing these connections can help you finally explain symptoms that conventional lab results may have overlooked. Why you need more than just a TSH test: TSH is often the only test run in conventional medicine, which means many people are diagnosed years too late. A full thyroid panel, including TPO and Tg antibodies, can catch Hashimoto’s in its early stages — before permanent damage occurs. The six common triggers behind elevated antibodies: We dive into stress, leaky gut, nutrient deficiencies (like low ferritin, B12, and vitamin D), toxins, inflammation, and blood sugar imbalances some of the most common drivers of thyroid antibodies. Addressing these underlying issues — not just symptoms — is key to lasting healing. Everyday strategies to lower antibodies and feel better: From daily breathwork, PFF-style meals (protein-fat-fiber), nervous system support, and meal planning to ditching excess iodine and healing the gut, this episode is packed with practical ways to start lowering antibodies naturally. You’ll also learn why going gluten- or dairy-free might help, but how gut repair can often bring food freedom back. Tune in to learn more about how to reduce thyroid antibodies and uncover the true root causes behind persistent Hashimoto’s symptoms. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations , Dr. Izabella Wentz explores the surprising foods that may look healthy on the outside — but secretly sabotage thyroid healing for those with Hashimoto’s. From high-iodine “superfoods” to seemingly innocent whey protein and gluten-free treats, she breaks down what makes these foods problematic and what to eat instead. What you’ll learn in this episode: The truth about iodine and Hashimoto’s. While iodine is essential for thyroid hormone production, excessive intake — especially from kelp, spirulina, and seaweed snacks — can trigger autoimmune flares. I’ve seen clients go from mildly symptomatic to completely bedridden after unknowingly overdoing iodine! Which protein powders are the best options for those with Hashimoto’s. Up to 80% of people with Hashimoto’s react to dairy, and whey is a major culprit. If you’ve been loading up on whey smoothies and are still dealing with bloating, skin issues, or joint pain, you may want to reconsider your protein powder. Even “healthier” grain products can still be harmful. Einkorn, sourdough, and sprouted wheat may be easier to digest for some — but for people with Hashimoto’s, they can still contribute to leaky gut and molecular mimicry. A survey I conducted years ago found that about 88% of my thyroid community feels better going gluten-free. Why soy can be sneaky and disruptive. Soy products can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption and increase antibodies. Even fermented versions like miso may cause issues in sensitive individuals. For many clients, removing soy dramatically reduces anxiety and brain fog. Gluten-free junk food is still junk. Yes, it’s free of gluten, but it’s often high in sugar, low in protein, and filled with inflammatory ingredients. Blood sugar imbalances from gluten-free cookies, pizza, and crackers can make thyroid symptoms worse, not better. Personalization is everything. Just because a food is labeled as a “superfood” doesn’t mean it’s super for your thyroid. From sushi to smoothies, what supports one person’s wellness could hinder someone else’s healing journey. Bioindividuality matters. Tune in to learn how the “healthy” foods you might be eating could be making your symptoms worse! Plus, you’ll discover plenty of realistic swaps so you can eat to nourish your thyroid, not aggravate it. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations , Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Brittany Henderson, a board-certified endocrinologist and founder of the Charleston Thyroid Center. Dr. Henderson shares her unconventional journey from a standard T4-only treatment approach to a more integrative practice that includes T4/T3 combination therapy, natural desiccated thyroid (NDT) and root cause medicine. Listeners will gain insight into why many thyroid patients continue to suffer despite “normal” lab results, and how looking beyond the TSH can reveal more accurate root causes of persistent symptoms. Together, Dr. Wentz and Dr. Henderson explore full thyroid panel testing, the impact of gut health on thyroid medication absorption, the autoimmune mechanisms behind Hashimoto’s, and why early intervention can sometimes reverse the need for lifelong medication. This episode is a must-listen for anyone seeking deeper answers in their thyroid healing journey. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why a full thyroid panel is essential. Conventional TSH lab tests can miss critical clues. A comprehensive panel — including free T3, reverse T3, thyroid antibodies, and even an ultrasound — paints a more complete picture of thyroid function and autoimmunity, helping identify issues like poor T4-to-T3 conversion or ongoing immune attacks. How T4/T3 combination therapy and NDT can change lives. For many patients, especially women and those with low muscle mass or inflammation, levothyroxine alone isn’t enough. Using natural desiccated thyroid or adding T3 can dramatically improve symptoms like fatigue, depression, hair loss, and stubborn weight gain. The truth about “normal” thyroid labs — and why you might still feel awful. Even with labs in the “normal” range, you could still experience classic thyroid symptoms such as anxiety, brain fog, and irregular periods. Dr. Henderson emphasizes aiming for optimal levels — not average levels — and the importance of tailoring labs to how you actually feel. Why identifying root causes is key to calming the immune system. Hidden triggers like gut infections (e.g., SIBO or H. pylori ), mold exposure, nutrient deficiencies (like iron or selenium), or even oral, tooth and vaginal infections can fuel Hashimoto’s. Identifying and addressing these drivers can significantly reduce thyroid antibodies and improve well-being. Yes, healing is possible — and meds aren’t always forever. Up to 20% of Dr. Henderson’s patients are able to reduce or even stop thyroid medication by identifying root causes early, lowering inflammation, and supporting thyroid regeneration. Especially in children, teens, and postpartum cases, early intervention can lead to full recovery. In this episode of The Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Dylan Petkus, a sleep apnea researcher, author, and functional health expert, to explore the often-overlooked connection between sleep apnea and thyroid disorders — particularly Hashimoto’s. Although the condition frequently goes undiagnosed, especially in women, sleep apnea is surprisingly common among those with Hashimoto’s. Dr. Petkus shares his personal journey and research-backed insights into natural, non-invasive approaches for overcoming sleep apnea without relying solely on CPAP machines. Listeners will discover: More than 50% of people with Hashimoto’s may also have sleep apnea. The more severe the sleep apnea, the more likely you are to have elevated thyroid antibodies. Women are often misdiagnosed or missed altogether. Sleep problems are frequently chalked up to menopause or stress, not airway dysfunction. A scalloped tongue could be a red flag. If your tongue presses against your teeth at night, it may indicate airway obstruction and poor nighttime breathing. Slow, intentional breathing can retrain your system. Just 10 minutes a day of breathwork can start to shift your patterns, improve oxygen flow at night, and improve sleep quality. Deficiencies in nutrients like thiamine and copper can make things worse. Supporting your mitochondria may be key to restoring energy and reducing inflammation. Tune in to learn more about how sleep apnea may be holding back your healing — and what you can do about it. In this episode of The Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews sleep expert and functional medicine practitioner Dr. Damiana Corca to explore the often-overlooked connection between sleep disorders and thyroid health. Dr. Corca shares insights from her clinical experience and her new book, The Deep Blue Sleep Book , which offers a practical roadmap to achieving truly restorative sleep. Listeners will discover the five primary types of insomnia and how they intersect with Hashimoto’s, adrenal dysfunction, hormonal imbalances, and even gut infections. Whether you’re struggling to fall asleep, waking too early, or feeling “wired but tired,” this conversation offers compassionate, root-cause solutions to help you get the rest you need and deserve. What you’ll learn in this episode: There are five distinct types of insomnia, and each requires a different healing strategy. Understanding your type is key to finding relief. Hashimoto’s often overlaps with adrenal dysfunction, which can make it harder to fall asleep or stay asleep — even if you’re utterly exhausted. Gut infections like H. pylori and Blastocystis hominis can be hidden culprits behind both thyroid flares and sleep disruptions, even without obvious digestive symptoms. Hormonal imbalances in perimenopause are a major trigger for sleep issues, especially when paired with blood sugar imbalances and chronic stress. Histamine intolerance is an under-recognized cause of insomnia, especially in people who struggle with nighttime itching, swelling, or racing thoughts. Sleep quality — not just quantity — is crucial, and Dr. Corca shares what healthy sleep actually looks and feels like, including tips for waking up refreshed. In this episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Kasey Holland, a naturopathic doctor specializing in chronic illness, viral reactivation, and complex fatigue cases. Drawing from her own journey with reactivated Epstein-Barr virus (or EBV, also known as “mono”), Dr. Holland shares what many traditional approaches overlook — especially when it comes to testing, triggers, and why some people never quite bounce back after mono. Together, Dr. Wentz and Dr. Holland break down the nuances of EBV reactivation and chronic fatigue syndrome, uncovering its links to autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s and exploring the lesser-known co-factors like mold exposure, parasites, and adrenal burnout that can block recovery. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why crushing fatigue after mono isn’t “all in your head” — and what to do about it. If you’re still wiped out months or even years after having the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), there’s a reason. Dr. Holland breaks down the science behind viral reactivation — and how it disrupts energy, mood, and immunity long after the initial infection. The hidden EBV–Hashimoto’s connection doctors often miss. You’ll learn how a virus you got years ago could be fueling thyroid issues today — and what labs to ask for to find out if the virus is reactivated or contained by your immune system. Why “fighting the virus” won’t fix your fatigue — unless you fix this too. From parasites to mold to nutrient gaps, this episode unpacks the overlooked root causes that weaken your immune system and allow EBV to flare again and again. The overlooked role of oxidative stress. Oxidative stress occurs when there's an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in the body. When this happens, your cells and tissues become more vulnerable to damage — and so does your immune system. When your body’s defenses are down, EBV has an opportunity to thrive. From mold to glyphosate, high oxidative stress also makes it easier for viruses like EBV to “turn back on.” What actually works for EBV symptoms — and what’s a waste of time. Discover what really moves the needle — including specific herbs, light therapies, IV vitamin C, adrenal support, and more. Tune in to learn more about Epstein-Barr virus, the root causes of fatigue, and the comprehensive healing strategies that can help you finally feel like yourself again. In this week’s episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Podcast , Dr. Izabella Wentz speaks with nutritional therapist Elliot Overton to explore the powerful but often-overlooked role of thiamine (vitamin B1) in thyroid health. They unpack how thiamine impacts energy levels, brain function, gut motility, and even complex conditions like POTS and SIBO. This conversation is packed with actionable information on identifying hidden deficiencies and restoring nutrient balance — especially for those still struggling with symptoms despite making diet and lifestyle changes. Listeners will also learn why standard testing often misses thiamine issues, what forms of supplementation are most effective, and how certain medications and stressors can deplete this crucial nutrient. Whether you're dealing with fatigue, dizziness, digestive issues, or thyroid dysfunction, this episode offers valuable insights into an often-missed root cause. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why thiamine deficiency is more common than you think and how even people eating a “healthy” diet can be functionally deficient due to multiple factors that impair absorption. This deficiency often goes unnoticed, and might be at the root of persistent fatigue or neurological symptoms. The connection between thiamine and POTS, SIBO, and thyroid dysfunction. Low thiamine levels can impair the autonomic nervous system, gut motility, and energy metabolism — leading to a host of common symptoms that might surprise you! How stress, antibiotics, and diet can deplete thiamine even if your intake looks sufficient. Thiamine is a delicate nutrient that gets used up rapidly during times of physical or emotional stress. The forms and dosages of thiamine that work best for specific conditions. Not all thiamine supplements are created equal — some forms are better absorbed or better suited for neurological versus digestive symptoms. In this episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz uncovers a commonly overlooked root cause of lingering symptoms in those with Hashimoto’s and hypothyroidism: adrenal dysfunction. While many people begin thyroid medication expecting full relief, they often find themselves still plagued by fatigue, brain fog, and mood swings. Dr. Wentz explains how the adrenals — our body’s stress glands — play a vital role in energy, mood, and inflammation regulation, and why so many with thyroid issues also struggle with adrenal imbalances. Listeners will learn how to spot adrenal dysfunction, explore simple at-home and advanced testing options, and discover practical, research-backed strategies for restoring adrenal health. Drawing from her personal experience and clinical insights, Dr. Wentz also shares a sneak peek into her signature protocol that has helped thousands regain their energy and clarity — without extreme measures or complex testing. What you’ll learn in this episode: Optimizing thyroid hormones can unmask adrenal dysfunction: The hormones work together in a feedback loop, and some people will initially feel better, then worse after starting thyroid hormones. This is a red flag for adrenal dysfunction. Adrenal dysfunction is present in >90% of people with thyroid issues: If you're dealing with morning fatigue, cravings, anxiety, brain fog, or feeling wired but tired, your adrenals may be struggling, even if your labs look "normal." There are easy ways to test your adrenal health. From checking your blood pressure lying down vs. standing, to observing mood swings and irritability, your body offers clues even before formal testing. You don’t need expensive tests or extreme measures to feel better. Simple shifts like balancing blood sugar, sleeping more, reducing caffeine, and replenishing key nutrients can transform your energy in just a few weeks. Adaptogens and nutrients can help you feel like yourself again. Dr. Wentz discusses the ABCs of adrenal recovery — Adaptogens, B vitamins (like B1, B5, and P5P), and vitamin C — and how they can help you rebuild your energy. Dr. Wentz shares her “Adrenal Kickstart” drink. It tastes like an orange creamsicle and helps replenish electrolytes, stabilize blood sugar, and support cortisol balance, especially if you’re running on fumes in the morning. Tune in to learn more about the critical connection between adrenal function and thyroid health — and how small shifts in your daily routine can unlock big improvements in your energy, mood, and well-being. In this episode of The Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations Podcast , Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Alex Carrasco, a board-certified physician, bestselling author, and founder of Nourish Medicine. Together, they unpack the many root causes of fatigue that go far beyond thyroid function. Dr. Carrasco shares how nutrient deficiencies, environmental toxins like mold, and even genetic polymorphisms can contribute to chronic exhaustion, especially in women with thyroid conditions. Listeners will walk away with a better understanding of why fatigue is a multifactorial issue and how to reclaim their energy with actionable strategies that include smarter supplementation, personalized testing, and simple lifestyle upgrades. Tune in to learn more about how to uncover and address the real causes behind chronic fatigue. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why fatigue is rarely caused by just one thing — and how to uncover all the hidden “logs” in your bonfire. Dr. Carrasco shares her metaphor of fatigue as a bonfire fueled by many logs — like nutrient deficiencies, hormone imbalances, chronic infections, and emotional stress — and how removing them one by one can lead to real healing. The critical nutrient deficiencies that can mimic thyroid issues (it’s not just B12!). Low levels of thiamine, ferritin, vitamin D, and CoQ10 can all contribute to fatigue, brain fog, and other symptoms that are often misattributed to thyroid dysfunction alone . The sleep mistake almost everyone makes — and how a simple circadian reset can help. Unfiltered morning sunlight and limiting blue light at night can dramatically improve sleep quality and energy levels throughout the day. The genetic blueprint that could explain your symptoms (plus what foods can help!). Polymorphisms like MTHFR and COMT can impact how your body handles nutrients, stress, and neurotransmitters, and knowing your genetic tendencies can help you eat and supplement smarter. The overlooked environmental factor that might be hiding in your home, office… or car. Mold exposure can suppress the immune system, drain your energy, and even impact mood and cognition. In this episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Danielle "Dani" Hamilton, a Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and a renowned blood sugar expert. Dani specializes in utilizing a personalized circadian and quantum approach to optimize metabolic health, a journey sparked by her own struggles with PCOS, hypoglycemia, acne, and weight loss resistance. The episode dives into the often-overlooked link between hypoglycemia and hypothyroidism, the many symptoms of low blood sugar, and how to balance blood sugar when you have hypoglycemia. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why low blood sugar might be sabotaging your thyroid health: Hypoglycemia often flies under the radar in hypothyroidism and may be responsible for increased thyroid antibodies, fatigue, an inability to lose weight, anxiety, insomnia, cravings and mood swings. Metabolic hypoglycemia is under-recognized : Many people experience symptoms like shakiness, anxiety, brain fog, or waking at 2 AM, even with blood sugar levels in the 70s or 80s—levels that are often dismissed by doctors as “normal.” Hypoglycemia can drive hormonal chaos : Dani reversed her PCOS not by directly treating hormones but by stabilizing her blood sugar. Dysregulated blood sugar disrupts thyroid function, sex hormones, cortisol, and even fertility. Your “personality traits” may be symptoms: Cravings, being “hangry,” needing snacks constantly, or being unable to skip meals are not just quirks—they’re often signs of blood sugar instability and metabolic dysfunction. Sunlight, not just food, fuels metabolism : Infrared and UVA light from the sun play a crucial role in mitochondrial health, blood sugar regulation, fat burning, and thyroid hormone activation. Dani emphasized our modern “sunlight deficiency” as a key factor in fatigue and metabolic issues. Leptin tells your body whether it’s safe to burn fat: Low leptin, common in over-stressed, underfed, overexercised women, suppresses thyroid function and keeps the body in famine mode. The solution isn’t more fasting—it’s strategic nourishment and nervous system regulation. Tune in to learn more about how to manage blood sugar effectively! In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations , Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews integrative pediatrician Dr. Roy Steinbock to explore the often-overlooked links between thyroid dysfunction, mental health, and chronic conditions in children and postpartum mothers. As a physician who blends conventional medicine with functional and holistic tools, Dr. Steinbock shares practical insights on how to identify and address root causes of common issues like fatigue, anxiety, ADHD, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). What you’ll learn in this episode: Thyroid disorders in kids often present differently than in adults. Dr. Roy shares how symptoms like anxiety, constipation, insomnia, and even changes in handwriting can indicate an underlying thyroid issue. Postpartum thyroid dysfunction is more common than you think. Many mothers with postpartum anxiety or depression may actually have undiagnosed thyroid issues, and testing TSH alone often isn’t enough. Iron and ferritin levels are crucial for thyroid and mental health. Dr. Roy explains how low ferritin can trigger fatigue, anxiety, immune dysfunction and even behavioral issues in children — even when hemoglobin levels (iron tests) appear normal. Furthermore they can prevent proper use of thyroid hormones. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) may be tied to thyroid and nutrient imbalances. Supplements like myo-inositol, NAC, and even nutritional lithium can make a big impact — especially when combined with thyroid support. PANDAS is a real and underdiagnosed condition. We break down the signs, the overlap with thyroid dysfunction, and how antibiotics and IVIG therapy are helping some children recover. In this episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Elena Zinkov about the critical yet often misunderstood transition of perimenopause. Dr. Zinkov is a naturopathic doctor who has dedicated her career to empowering women through innovative hormone and peptide therapies. Having faced her own struggles with perimenopause symptoms in her 30s, Dr. Zinkov refused to accept what the medical establishment deemed "normal." Frustrated by a system that often overlooks the unique challenges women face such as brain fog, fatigue, weight gain, and metabolic dysfunction — she embarked on a mission to change the narrative. Dr. Zinkov is leading the charge in redefining women’s health through innovative hormone and peptide therapies — specifically designed to empower women over 35 to reprogram their metabolism, build muscle, and confidently defy the aging process. The conversation addresses common misconceptions about hormone replacement therapy, and offers insight into the role that hormones like progesterone, estrogen, and testosterone play in the body. Listeners will learn about: Perimenopause starts earlier than most women realize — often in their 30s. Dr. Zinkov explains that hormone decline begins as early as our mid-twenties, and symptoms like insomnia, anxiety, mood swings, weight gain, and irregular cycles can start showing up long before periods stop. Tracking hormone fluctuations through regular testing is key to catching these changes early. Progesterone is the first hormone to decline — and it's essential for sleep, mood, and calm. Bioidentical progesterone metabolizes into allopregnanolone, which activates GABA receptors in the brain. This calming effect is why declining progesterone often shows up as insomnia, anxiety, and irritability. And no — progestin is not the same thing. In fact, it can worsen mood and increase health risks. Growth hormone peptides (like sermorelin, CJC, Ipamorelin) paired with GLP-1s (like semaglutide) may help reverse metabolic decline in perimenopause . Dr. Zinkov shares that this combination not only supports weight loss but also builds lean muscle, regulates blood sugar, and boosts energy. These peptides work best when hormones are balanced, and they may even reduce autoimmune markers and inflammation. Testosterone is critical for motivation, libido, muscle mass, and mood in women — but needs to be carefully dosed. Despite fears of "bulking up," women naturally produce testosterone and often need small amounts in midlife. Starting with a microdose (like 0.5–1 mg) in topical form can support energy and mental drive without unwanted side effects like acne or hair growth. Weight loss isn’t just about willpower or calories in/calories out — it’s about metabolic function, hormones, and muscle. Crash dieting and over-exercising can backfire, especially in perimenopause. Dr. Zinkov emphasizes prioritizing protein, resistance training, and supporting thyroid, adrenal, and sex hormones to rebuild metabolism from the inside out. In this episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews biohacker and Bulletproof founder Dave Asprey, diving deep into the science of performance, resilience, and true health optimization. Dave talks about the tools he used through his personal health challenges, including Hashimoto's and chronic fatigue, to overcome mold toxicity, reclaim cognitive clarity, and re-mineralize his body.He shares that you can heal your physical body, but sometimes your brain and mindset can keep you stuck. Meditation is one way out, but it’s not the only way out (and often not the best way out). Listeners will learn about the fascinating world of biohacking, and discover practical tools and strategies that can help rewire the brain and heal the body. Tune in to discover how: Meditation helps rewire the brain out of chronic stress, can reduce inflammation and improve neuroplasticity. These changes are especially relevant for people with autoimmune conditions, PTSD, or brain fog, as they promote healing and cognitive flexibility, as well as improve emotional regulation, focus, and resilience. Not every brain is wired for traditional meditation. Fast-thinking, high-reactive brains (sometimes called “hunter brains”) may find sitting meditation frustrating or even dysregulating. These individuals often do better with active or tech-assisted practices. Neurofeedback is one powerful alternative to traditional meditation . It uses real-time brainwave feedback to train the brain into calm, focused states — without requiring years of practice. Results can include better sleep, less reactivity, and enhanced cognitive clarity. But there are also many others. :-) Healing the body doesn’t automatically rewire the stress response . Izabella shared how even after remission from Hashimoto’s, her brain patterns remained stuck in fear and overwork — until she incorporated adrenal and brain retraining tools like neurofeedback and adaptogens. Trigger management is energy management. Every unresolved trigger drains energy — and adrenal recovery (both physiologic and emotional) frees up that energy for healing, joy, and growth. He also has over 40 years of experience working with compounded medications and bioidentical hormones, and is Dr. Izabella Wentz's go-to resource for compounded medications and hormones. Together, they delve into the evolution of thyroid treatment, discussing the transition from natural desiccated thyroid to synthetic medications like Synthroid and levothyroxine. Mr. Black also dives into unique compounded medications that can help people with thyroid and autoimmune conditions. The history of thyroid treatment was impacted by pharmaceutical marketing. Natural desiccated thyroid was the standard until Synthroid's aggressive marketing campaigns shifted care to T4-only — regardless of patient outcomes. The TSH test revolutionized — and narrowed — thyroid care. Once TSH became the gold standard, doctors stopped treating symptoms and started chasing lab numbers, leaving many patients behind. Some patients simply don’t convert T4 to T3 — and suffer because of it. Carter explains why this population often feels unheard, and how adding T3 or switching to compounded thyroid meds can change everything. Endocrinologists’ fear of T3 is rooted in a dark history. In the ‘80s, weight loss clinics combined T3 with stimulants, leading to thyroid storms and hospitalizations — creating long-standing medical stigma. Women are underserved in medicine — especially in hormones and autoimmune treatment. Carter shares how his passion for women’s health grew out of loss, and why compounding may be the only way to truly personalize care. I hope you will enjoy this podcast episode! In this episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Ben Azadi, a distinguished figure in the field of metabolic health. Known as the founder of Keto Camp and the author of several bestselling books, including his upcoming release Metabolic Freedom , Ben shares his inspiring journey from obesity to a healthy lifestyle. He aims to help others achieve metabolic flexibility and improve their overall health through natural methods. The conversation delves into the vital connection between metabolic health and mental well-being, along with practical strategies for adopting a ketogenic lifestyle. Key Learning Points: Metabolic Flexibility is the True Goal Rather than staying in continuous ketosis, Ben emphasizes the importance of metabolic flexibility — being able to efficiently switch between burning glucose and fat. This flexibility improves energy, resilience, and long-term metabolic health, especially when personalized to one’s needs, like cycling carbs for hormone support. Mitochondrial Health Drives Everything Ben explains that mitochondria aren’t just energy factories — they're intelligent sensors of stress. When overwhelmed, they trigger a "cell danger response" that can lead to chronic illness, including autoimmunity. Supporting mitochondria with ketones, glutathione, and melatonin is key for energy, mood, and thyroid function. Liver Function is a Keto Dealbreaker A sluggish liver can sabotage the ketogenic transition by impairing fat digestion. Ben recommends prepping with bitter foods like arugula and apple cider vinegar, and in some cases, using ox bile or castor oil packs to improve bile flow and detoxification — especially important for people with thyroid issues. Dairy-Free Keto is Often a Key Component to Keto Success in Hashimoto’s. Many people hit a wall with keto due to hidden food sensitivities — especially to dairy — which can trigger inflammation, hormone imbalances, or stalled weight loss. Removing dairy can ease congestion, support clearer skin, and reduce bloating Fasting for Women Requires Strategy Fasting is not inherently harmful for women or those with thyroid issues, but it must be introduced gradually and strategically. Ben advises monitoring HRV (heart rate variability) as a marker for resilience and recommends premenstrual carb cycling to support progesterone production and hormonal balance. Hypoglycemia Can Be Reversed with the Right Keto Entry Many with Hashimoto’s or adrenal issues experience hypoglycemia, making keto or fasting initially difficult. Ben suggests a “low and slow” approach — gradually reducing carbs, increasing nutrient-dense fats, and possibly using supplements like chromium, magnesium, or carnitine to ease the transition and stabilize blood sugar. In this episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz welcomes metabolic health coach and functional diagnostic nutrition practitioner, Maja Miller. With a wealth of experience helping clients achieve optimal health, Maja dives deep into the often-overlooked importance of minerals in maintaining bodily functions and overall well-being. She discusses the common deficiencies many face today and shares practical insights on how to address them through a holistic approach to nutrition. Listeners will discover: Minerals are the “spark plugs” of the body. They drive every metabolic process, including hormone production, energy, and detoxification. Without the right minerals in balance—especially foundational ones like magnesium, sodium, potassium, and calcium—your body’s systems can’t function properly, no matter how "healthy" your diet looks on the surface. Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) reveals deep insights. Blood tests show only what’s in transit, but 90–95% of minerals are stored inside cells. HTMA provides a 3-month snapshot of what’s going on intracellularly and is especially useful in identifying mineral deficiencies, toxicities, and imbalances that blood work misses. Thyroid issues may actually be mineral issues. The thyroid relies on at least nine key minerals—including iodine, magnesium, zinc, and copper—to function properly. TSH may look “normal” on labs, but if minerals are deficient or out of balance, thyroid hormone won’t be produced, converted, or utilized properly at the cellular level. Pregnancy and breastfeeding rapidly deplete minerals. Women can lose up to 20% of their bone density while breastfeeding, especially if they enter pregnancy already deficient. Maja emphasizes the importance of remineralizing preconception and during postpartum to prevent issues like tooth demineralization, postpartum anxiety, and infertility. Low stomach acid from mineral deficiencies opens the door to infections. Sodium is required for stomach acid production, but it’s been demonized in modern diets. Without enough stomach acid, pathogens like H. pylori, mold, and parasites can thrive—especially in those with thyroid issues, where low stomach acid is common yet often misdiagnosed. Tune in for an informative discussion that empowers listeners to understand the vital connection between minerals and overall well-being. His journey illustrates that individuals can reclaim their health through a holistic approach rather than solely relying on conventional medications. The episode highlights the overlap between Graves' Disease and Hashimoto's, discussing how individuals can present symptoms of both conditions simultaneously. He explains the importance of understanding these conditions as autoimmune issues rather than just thyroid disorders. Dr. Osansky recommends natural alternatives for symptom management, such as bugleweed and motherwort, which can help regulate thyroid hormone levels . While these herbs can be effective, it’s crucial to monitor thyroid function closely to avoid adverse effects. The conversation delves into the role of gut health in thyroid conditions, with Dr. Osansky advocating for testing for infections like H. pylori and parasites. Addressing gut health can significantly impact autoimmune responses and overall thyroid function. In this episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews her longtime friend Magdalena Wszelaki, a prominent expert in hormone balance and a passionate advocate for women’s health. Magdalena Wszelaki, a leading expert in hormone balance and a personal advocate for women's health. Magdalena is an endocrine nutrition expert, certified herbalist, speaker, educator and author of two books, Cooking for Hormone Balance and Overcoming Estrogen Dominance. She is also the founder of Hormones Balance community and Wellena products – supplements made by women, for women. She’s experienced her own hormonal challenges including Graves’ and Hashimoto’s disease, as well as estrogen dominance. Today she is in full remission and sailed through perimenopause — and she teaches women how to accomplish the same. Their conversation centers around the intricate connections between thyroid health, estrogen dominance, and perimenopause. What you’ll learn in this episode: Estrogen dominance is extremely common and often underdiagnosed , contributing to symptoms like heavy periods, fibrocystic breasts, thyroid nodules, irritability, and even an increased risk for estrogen-related cancers; it can occur even when estrogen levels are “normal” if progesterone is too low or estrogen isn’t properly metabolized. The liver plays a critical role in hormone balance by detoxifying used-up hormones like estrogen , and supporting liver function through bitters, broccoli sprouts, and sulforaphane can significantly improve hormone-related symptoms. Dutch testing (urine hormone testing) is the gold standard for identifying estrogen dominance and poor estrogen metabolism , while conventional blood tests for hormones often miss imbalances, especially during perimenopause and menopause. For low progesterone, herbal options like Vitex can be helpful early in perimenopause, but many women eventually need bioidentical progesterone (topical or oral) to properly restore balance, improve sleep, calm anxiety, and protect against estrogen excess. Inflammation is a root driver of hormone imbalances, Hashimoto’s, and estrogen dominance; addressing it through an anti-inflammatory diet, stress management, gut healing, and toxin reduction is essential before or alongside using hormone therapies. In this episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz speaks with James Maskell, author, speaker, and healthcare entrepreneur, who is affectionately called “the Ryan Seacrest of Functional Medicine,” and is the leading voice in spreading awareness of the impact of integrative medicine. James has created a number of organizations to scale access to health focused care, and is a thought leader who has been featured at the World Health Organization, TEDMED, HuffPostLive, and TEDx. James shares the critical issue of cognitive decline in light of his personal experiences with his father's rapid decline, which turned out to be reversible. The podcast explores the interconnectedness of environmental factors, community support, and innovative approaches to reversing cognitive decline, highlighting the importance of awareness and proactive measures for maintaining brain health. Tune in to discover valuable insights about cognitive health, including: Rapid cognitive decline can often be triggered by infections or environmental toxins, such as mold exposure . In James Maskell’s personal story, identifying and removing his father from a moldy environment led to a dramatic improvement in cognition. Cognitive decline is no longer just an issue for the elderly; it's increasingly affecting people in their 30s, 40s, and 50s. Environmental factors, infections, metabolic inflammation, and even the stressors of recent years have contributed to earlier onset cognitive issues. A new software platform is being developed to help functional medicine doctors more easily diagnose and reverse cognitive decline . By organizing patient lab data and identifying patterns, this technology aims to simplify complex cases and make root cause medicine more accessible. Cognitive decline is often driven by six main root causes: metabolic inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction and nutrient depletion, hormonal imbalances, chemical toxins, chronic infections and biotoxins, and vascular issues. Addressing these systematically can lead to significant recovery and prevention. Preventing cognitive decline starts decades before symptoms appear. Proactive testing, lifestyle changes, and addressing early functional imbalances around age 55 — or even earlier — can dramatically shift brain health outcomes later in life. In this episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, host Dr. Izabella Wentz welcomes personal trainer and functional nutrition coach April Rodriguez to discuss thyroid-friendly fitness. April shares her personal journey of being diagnosed with Hashimoto's six months after giving birth, which led her to explore the intricate relationship between thyroid health and fitness. The conversation is packed with insights that can transform the way you think about exercise and nutrition, especially if you've ever felt overwhelmed or discouraged on your journey. What you’ll learn in this episode: Overexercising Can Backfire with Hashimoto’s April explains that intense workouts like HIIT or OrangeTheory can leave women with Hashimoto’s feeling inflamed, fatigued for days, or even flu-like. Instead of pushing harder, she encourages strength training with progressive overload that meets the body where it’s at—supporting muscle gain without burnout. Exhausted After a Workout? That’s a Red Flag If a workout leaves you depleted instead of energized, it’s likely working against you, not for you. April recommends checking hydration, adding electrolytes, adjusting meal timing, and possibly shifting to a lower-intensity routine while tuning in to how your body responds. Calorie Restriction Can Worsen Thyroid Function Chronically undereating can backfire, especially with hypothyroidism. April uses a “feed phase” approach, gradually increasing calories to optimize thyroid health, metabolism, and insulin sensitivity—often helping clients lose fat by eating more. Pre/Post Workout Fueling Matters April recommends fueling with 25–30g of protein and ~25% of daily carbs both before and after workouts. She avoids high-fat meals pre-workout for better digestion and energy. This helps with recovery, lean muscle building, and balanced blood sugar—key for thyroid health. Blood Sugar Monitoring is Critical Women with thyroid issues often struggle with blood sugar regulation. April uses glucometers or continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) to detect hypoglycemia or insulin resistance. This helps tailor workouts and nutrition to stabilize energy and support fat loss. Progress Comes from Personalization April custom-builds fitness and nutrition protocols based on thyroid labs, symptoms, and biofeedback—not cookie-cutter plans. Red flags? If your coach doesn’t ask about your thyroid or ignores symptoms like fatigue or hypoglycemia, they may not be the right fit. This episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast features Dr. Lauryn Lax, a former TV journalist turned functional medicine expert. Dr. Lauryn shares her inspiring journey of overcoming 13 chronic illnesses, including Hashimoto’s, hypothyroidism, IBS, Lyme disease, mast cell activation, mold toxicity, orthorexia, and anorexia. Now a functional medicine expert, Dr. Lauryn empowers others to heal from within, with a focus on gut health, hormones, detoxing, faith, and mindset. The conversation delves into the psychological aspects of healing, where Dr. Lauryn discusses the healing philosophies of German New Medicine and their relevance in thyroid and adrenal health. What You’ll Learn: The "Kidney Collecting Tubule Conflict" and Isolation Weight Gain : Dr. Lauryn explains how sudden, unexplained weight gain, fatigue, and thyroid/hormonal issues can stem from emotional trauma — especially feelings of abandonment, isolation, or existential fear. During the pandemic, many people (including Izabella) experienced this "beached whale syndrome," where the body retains water and weight as a protective mechanism due to deep emotional stress. Thyroid Symptoms as Metaphors for “Uncaught Morsels” : In German New Medicine, thyroid issues often stem from a psychological perception of “not being able to catch a morsel”— whether that’s time, love, purpose, or personal space. For women, this often relates to self-sacrifice, lack of boundaries, or losing one’s identity in caregiving or work. Gut-First Approach to Healing the Thyroid : Dr. Lauryn emphasizes that true thyroid healing starts in the gut. She explains how optimizing digestion, healing intestinal permeability, and rebalancing the microbiome can restore hormone function — even in autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s. Healing the Identity Before the Body : One of Dr. Lauryn’s core teachings is helping clients rewrite their identity — moving from “I am Hashimoto’s” or “I am sick” to “I am healing” or “I am resilient.” She encourages designing a higher version of self ("that girl/guy") and embodying that person before full physical healing manifests. The Power of Mindset in Food Reactions : She shares how food sensitivities aren’t just biological but can be linked to unresolved emotional stressors. For instance, a child may develop a peanut allergy after experiencing emotional trauma while eating a PB&J, wiring the food to danger. Rewiring the nervous system and beliefs can help reverse food reactions. Mold Sensitivity and Emotional Resilience : Mold toxicity symptoms often correlate with a prior season of intense stress. Dr. Lauryn points out that mold is the trigger — but the body’s inability to detox is usually due to weakened resilience from trauma, toxins, or immune imbalance. Addressing the inner terrain is as vital as detoxing the mold. Healing is 80% Emotional and 20% Tactical : Whether it’s an autoimmune illness, food sensitivities, or gut dysfunction, Dr. Lauryn’s approach is 80% about resolving the emotional root and 20% about physical support (like enzymes, magnesium, sauna, or supplements). She uses mindset tools like mantras (“What would healthy me do?”) and EFT tapping to rewire the nervous system. This episode is a must-listen for anyone seeking to enhance their understanding of thyroid health and pathways to healing. Struggling to lose weight even though you’ve resolved your other thyroid symptoms? Many people, especially women, with thyroid issues or Hashimoto’s, find weight loss one of the most challenging thyroid symptoms to tackle — even when they are able to resolve other common symptoms like hair loss, brain fog, energy levels, digestive issues, and sleep disturbances. In this episode, Dr. Izabella Wentz speaks with McCall McPherson, a pioneering physician associate and specialist in thyroid, hormone, and metabolic health. Tune into this informative conversation to learn about: Many thyroid patients remain symptomatic on T4-only medications like levothyroxine due to poor conversion to active T3 — caused by stress, nutrient deficiencies, or genetics. Subclinical hypothyroidism is often just early-stage hypothyroidism — waiting to treat it delays healing and impacts quality of life. T3-containing medications like Cytomel or Natural Desiccated Thyroid (NDT) can dramatically improve symptoms like fatigue, hair loss, and depression. GLP-1 medications (like semaglutide), when microdosed and paired with lifestyle support, help thyroid patients lose weight and heal underlying metabolic dysfunction. These medications may also reduce inflammation and Hashimoto’s antibodies when used appropriately Studies do not show increased thyroid cancer risk from GLP-1s in humans; concerns stem from outdated rat studies using mega-doses. Success with GLP-1s depends on personalized, low dosing, strength training, proper nutrition, and lab monitoring — not just taking a shot and hoping for the best. If you’ve been struggling to lose weight and would like to learn more about the pros and cons of weight loss medications, give this episode a listen.
