This Week in Pharmacy – Friday, December 5th Strengthening the Pharmacy Workforce: A Conversation with Crystal Lennartz Cutting Through the AI Confusion: Shaun Jensen on Smarter Pharmacy Operations The New 340B Reality: Allison Arant on Navigating HRSA’s Rebate Model Welcome to another episode of This Week in Pharmacy, where we bring together the most important conversations, industry insights, and breaking pharmacy news shaping the future of healthcare. Today’s show features a powerhouse lineup of leaders driving innovation across retail pharmacy, technology, consulting, and 340B health-system strategy. 🟦 Segment 1 — Interview with Crystal Lennartz, President of Health Mart & Health Mart Atlas We open the show with a conversation with Crystal Lennartz, President of Health Mart and Health Mart Atlas, about the evolving role of workforce management in independent pharmacies. 📰 TWIRx News — Friday, December 5th A fast roundup of the top stories impacting pharmacy this week: 👉 Humana Exploring Partnership with Mark Cuban Humana is reportedly in discussions with Mark Cuban to explore a potential pharmacy partnership that could disrupt traditional PBM and drug-supply models. The collaboration may reshape how medications are priced and accessed—another sign that alternative pharmacy models are gaining traction. 👉 New Migraine Therapy: Symbravo Pharmacists should be aware of Symbravo, a new dual-action migraine therapy combining meloxicam and rizatriptan. Importantly, the product is non-substitutable , meaning pharmacies must dispense exactly as written. The therapy adds a new tool for acute migraine care but requires careful patient counseling on cardiovascular risks, medication-overuse headaches, and NSAID interactions. 👉 Walgreens Expands Automated Fulfillment Centers Walgreens continues restructuring by expanding its automated micro-fulfillment pharmacy network. Robots are now filling a growing percentage of maintenance prescriptions, allowing pharmacists to refocus on clinical services. The move signals accelerating automation across retail pharmacy as chains seek cost savings and operational efficiency. 🟦 Segment 2 — Interview with Shaun Jensen, CEO of JB Consulting Group Next, we speak with Shaun Jensen, CEO of JB Consulting Group, about the rising confusion many pharmacy operators face around AI adoption. We discuss: Where AI adds true efficiency versus where it’s misunderstood Practical steps for pharmacy owners to implement AI tools How data-driven automation can improve workflow, inventory, prior authorizations, and patient communication The mindset shift required for pharmacies to thrive in an AI-supported future 🟦 Segment 3 — Interview with Allison Arant, SVP of Client Development & Marketing, Clearway Health Our final interview is with Allison Arant from Clearway Health, focusing on the new challenges hospital systems face as HRSA launches the 340B rebate model. Key discussion points: How the rebate model changes operational and financial dynamics for 340B hospitals Why safety-net hospitals caring for large uninsured and underinsured populations are feeling heightened pressure Strategies Clearway Health is deploying to help health systems navigate rising medication costs, compliance demands, and shrinking margins What health-system pharmacies must prepare for heading into 2026 This week’s conversations underscored a unifying theme: the pharmacy industry is entering a period of rapid transformation, driven by new reimbursement models, automation, innovation partnerships, and evolving expectations from both patients and payers. Independent pharmacies, health systems, and specialty operators all face challenges—but also significant opportunities for reinvention, collaboration, and leadership. Thank you for tuning in to This Week in Pharmacy. Stay informed, stay inspired, and keep pushing our profession forward. Walgreens doubles down on automation to reshape pharmacy operations. The retail pharmacy giant is dramatically expanding its network of robot-powered micro-fulfillment centers (MFCs) — facilities that dispense maintenance medications for chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension. The goal: serve 5,000+ stores by the end of the year, up from earlier coverage of around 4,800 stores. https://chainstoreage.com/news-briefs/2025-12-05?article=walgreens-expands-automated-pharmacy-fulfillment-network New migraine therapy raises key practice questions for pharmacists. Symbravo — a fixed-dose oral tablet combining meloxicam (an NSAID) and rizatriptan (a triptan) — has been approved for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura, offering a dual-mechanism option targeting both inflammation and serotonin-mediated pathways. Pharmacists now play a critical role: they must identify patients at risk for medication-overuse headaches, screen for contraindications (e.g., cardiovascular disease, GI risk, or NSAID/triptan interactions), and advocate for comprehensive migraine management beyond just pain relief — including lifestyle adjustments and referrals when needed. https://www.pharmacytimes.com/view/what-pharmacists-should-know-about-symbravo-s-role-and-non-substitutability-in-migraine-care Humana is reportedly working with Mark Cuban on a potential pharmacy partnership — a development that could shake up how prescriptions are delivered and disrupt traditional middle-man models. The collaboration would leverage Cuban’s innovative approach to drug pricing and distribution, potentially creating a new channel for medication access that bypasses traditional pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) and large-chain dispensaries. If executed, the partnership could increase competitive pressure on legacy players and reshape the pharmacy supply chain. For independent pharmacies and pharmacy leaders, this signals a possible shift in how drugs are sourced, priced, and distributed — highlighting the growing influence of alternative pharmacy models and urging traditional pharmacies to adapt or risk being left behind. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-12-04/humana-working-with-mark-cuban-on-potential-pharmacy-partnership Washington, DC there's a whole bunch of pharmacy people meeting up to rollout the Pharmacists Fight Back Act (PFBA)! On "This Week in Pharmacy" #TWIRx TWIRx NEWS This Week in Pharmacy News – A trio of developments highlight major shifts and ongoing challenges in pharmacy care: Fruth Pharmacy , a 73-year-old family-owned regional pharmacy chain in West Virginia and Ohio, has been acquired by Walgreens Boots Alliance, with transfer of prescription files and inventory from 16 stores planned for December 3 — the deal underscores how legacy community pharmacies are increasingly consolidating to survive pressure from reimbursement and PBM models. - from Mass Market Retailers https://lnkd.in/emKagG9v At UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy , the Postgraduate Year One Community-based Pharmacy Residency Program is celebrating 25 years, having trained 163 residents who serve in community pharmacies across North Carolina. With 95 % of Americans living within five miles of a pharmacy, the program emphasizes the critical role of community pharmacists in rural and underserved areas. https://lnkd.in/e-Gk5bkr A new commentary from Those Nerdy Girls draws attention to the growing crisis of “pharmacy deserts” — areas lacking accessible pharmacies — and links closures of independent and chain pharmacies (nearly 1 in 3 since 2010) with inequities in care for rural, Black and Latino-majority neighborhoods. The piece calls for PBM reform, policy action and community engagement to preserve pharmacy access. https://lnkd.in/ezxmdRfb Featured Sponsor today: MatchRX presents: Understanding #DSCSA and the Road to 2026 Special Guest: Ilisa Bernstein PharmD, JD CEO & Co-founder Johny Kello with MatchRX Johny welcomes one of the "50 Most Influential People in Pharmacy", Ilisa B.G. Special Feature: Andrew Crawford, Vice President at Keysource talks with TWIRx host Todd Eury about the direct to patient market (Direct to Consumer, DTC) expected to hit $21 billion this year. Pharmacy is evolving fast. When DTC brands move in, pharmacies have a choice...compete or collaborate. Some manufacturers are selling directly to patients at discounted cash prices and cutting out traditional intermediaries. The model is projected to grow 9% a year through 2030, with pharma support services expected to nearly double from $3.2B to $5.7B by 2030. Driven by cost pressure and new legislation, manufacturers are moving quickly. It is creating more transparency but patients still need guidance, trust, and human care. Pharmacy is being redefined as the bridge that keeps care personal, safe, and local. It is not being replaced, but what will it look like in 10 years? SIGN UP HERE: https://atrium24.io/atriumx-conference-attendees/ NEXT -- on the second half of TWIRx, we talk with Dr. Julie Schulz, MD, MPH and Dr. Michael Dovidio, PharmD from Avalon Health talk about the challenges of 'quick fix' treatments and weight management plans with the inclusion of GLP-1s. From the article titled: "How to Maximize the Value of GLP-1 Drugs While Improving Health Equity" --Julie and Mike talk about the real world needs of people who want to lose weight, doing it the right way for long term benefit. Due to the continued high cost, only patients with greater financial resources or those with generous employer-sponsored drug benefits will be able to afford the medications for obesity. This can exacerbate health inequities, likely driving significantly higher costs for public and commercial health plans, intensified by the new financial strain from weight loss medications. Rather than denying coverage for GLP-1s for obesity, health plans could modify eligibility policies to require data from a standardized set of laboratory tests and other biometrics to identify patients in most need of GLP-1s and verify medical necessity. This approach would reduce inappropriate prescribing while ensuring that patients who are most likely to benefit from the drugs have access to them.

“Hey Cory, what do you do?” I am a comedian, pharmacist, author, and speaker. With the eye for detail of a pharmacist and the mind of a comedian, I am out to help others challenge the conventions and PREscriptions holding them back while adapting to the unknown and living in the moment. All while getting some laughs along the way. Rewind to 2013, two years into my pharmacy career and there I was, struggling to adapt to the unscripted world of pharmacy and healthcare. On paper I had checked all of the boxes: perfect grades, residency, board certifications. But then I realized something was missing - the ability to create meaningful connections in the moment with those I cared for, and the ability to adapt and remain flexible. 2013 was the year I went to my first improv class and two simple words changed everything for me: "Yes, and." _____________ The Pennsylvania Pharmacists Care Network (PPCN) is pleased to announce that Dr. Rob Maher has been selected to serve as its new President and Chief Operating Officer (COO). Special Intervieww with Ed Holt On May 8, Ed posted a sharp criticism of Governor Kemp’s veto of SB 198, a bill with broad bipartisan support that would help Georgia’s independent pharmacies. As then-President of the Georgia Pharmacy Association, Ed heard from many independents that if this bill didn’t pass it could mean the death of their stores. As the representative of GPHA, Ed felt it was his duty to make a statement. Later that evening, Ed's employer, PruittHealth, contacted him and asked me to take it down. He complied immediately. On May 9, PruittHealth told Ed the post jeopardized their relationship with the Governor, and then they fired him. After 17 years of loyal service with not a single negative evaluation, Ed was terminated with no notice and with no severance. Ed has spent the last 7 weeks trying to get some sort of compensation for his time at the company. But PruittHealth has flatly refused stating that they violated their social media policy. Visual design plays a crucial role in establishing a community pharmacy as a trusted and credible healthcare destination. A well-thought-out visual design can significantly impact the perception of the pharmacy and attract customers. On this episode of 'This Week in Pharmacy' we talk with award winning Pharmacy Designer Fiona Sartetto Verna and veteran pharmacy busienss marketing leader Nicolle McClure - CEO of Finch Marketing. Here's a short summary of how visual design and marketing content can influence a community pharmacy: Professional Image: Visual design can create a professional and welcoming atmosphere in the pharmacy. This includes well-designed signage, a clean and organized interior layout, and aesthetically pleasing branding. A pharmacy that looks clean and organized is more likely to be perceived as reliable and trustworthy. Branding: Consistent and appealing branding through logos, color schemes, and signage helps in building a strong brand identity. A visually appealing logo and color palette can make the pharmacy memorable and easily recognizable in the community. Information Accessibility: Visual design can aid in making essential health information easily accessible. This includes clear labeling of medication shelves, informative pamphlets, and user-friendly prescription instructions. When customers can find the information they need effortlessly, it enhances their trust in the pharmacy's expertise. Marketing Content: Solid marketing content is essential to inform the community about the pharmacy's services and products. This content can include brochures, flyers, and online materials that highlight the pharmacy's offerings, such as prescription services, over-the-counter medications, health screenings, and wellness programs. Online Presence: In today's digital age, having a visually appealing and user-friendly website and social media presence is crucial. These platforms should showcase the pharmacy's services, staff credentials, customer reviews, and health-related articles. It allows the community to engage with the pharmacy online and reinforces its credibility. Customer Engagement: Visual design also plays a role in customer engagement. Pharmacies can use visually appealing displays and promotions to capture customers' attention and encourage them to explore the products and services offered. Engaging visuals can create a sense of community involvement. Trust and Credibility: Ultimately, a well-designed community pharmacy exudes trust and credibility. Patients are more likely to choose a pharmacy that appears professional, organized, and knowledgeable about their healthcare needs. Solid marketing content reinforces this image. In conclusion, visual design and marketing content are essential tools for community pharmacies to establish themselves as trusted and credible healthcare destinations. A well-designed pharmacy with informative and visually appealing materials can attract and retain customers, fostering a strong sense of trust within the community.

A new, real-world evidence study of patients with Gram-negative infections showed that early intervention with Fetroja® (cefiderocol) significantly reduced in-hospital all-cause mortality. This real-world evidence, drawn from a retrospective analysis of 275 seriously ill patients, emphasizes the critical importance of timely treatment. The retrospective multicenter observational study showed earlier treatment resulted in a reduction in in-hospital all-cause mortality (IHACM) in patients with Gram-negative infections who previously received other antibiotics, including those with difficult-to-treat pathogens that were resistant to other antibiotics. Here is a link to the press release with a summary of the results presented by Shionogi at ID Week in October. We would be happy to arrange an interview with pharmacist Thomas Lodise, PharmD, PhD, Associate Professor, Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, to delve deeper into these results. Happy Pharmacy Friday This Week In Pharmacy, our first interview is with Alexandria Arnett Pharm. D Candidate (class of 2025) ACVP Student Pharmacist Board Member Thank you Framework LTC for supporting our Pharmacists! Tune in to their monthly podcast at https://frameworkltc.com/podcast Our second interview, Dr. Nhu Truong, PharmD Dr. Nhu Truong is a Functional Medicine/Holistic Practitioner, an Admission Advisor for the STORRIE Institute, and a concierge for the Burn Out to All Out team. With 13 years of experience as a Clinical Pharmacist in Corporate America, she understands the challenges of being a super-working mom and an overachieving clinician and entrepreneur, which took a toll on her health. Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment, cultivating self-awareness, and embracing a non-judgmental attitude. It's a powerful tool that can help you navigate the complexities of your career with grace and resilience. Here's how: Stress Reduction: Mindfulness techniques can reduce stress levels, helping you stay calm and composed even in high-pressure situations. Enhanced Focus: By training your mind to be present, you can improve your concentration and productivity. Improved Decision-Making: Mindfulness allows you to make better decisions by fostering clarity and reducing the influence of impulsive reactions. Increased Creativity: Embracing mindfulness can unlock your creative potential, enabling you to find innovative solutions to challenges. Work-Life Balance: Achieving a balance between your career and personal life becomes more attainable as mindfulness helps you set boundaries and prioritize self-care. Dr. Luana Colloca, a physician-scientist at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, calls this our “inner pharmacy.” Just expecting to feel better can cause the release of these substances. “Our mindset is so critical,” Colloca says, “because our thoughts are not independent from our bodies’ responses.” The placebo effect can be powerful. It can help with pain, fatigue, depression, anxiety, or nausea. But our inner pharmacy can’t treat everything. It can’t, for instance, make tumors go away, lower your cholesterol, or get rid of infections. https://newsinhealth.nih.gov/2023/01/powerful-placebo#:~:text=The%20placebo%20effect%20can%20be,or%20get%20rid%20of%20infections .

There are a lot of myths and misconceptions about obesity that are constantly being spread around the world. Despite extensive research and studies, society has developed a toxic concept of obesity and most are not willing to learn the truth behind the complex and chronic disease. While we don’t know everything that there is to know about obesity and weight management, spreading myths and misconceptions is harmful and damaging. Here are some common myths and misconceptions about obesity: “Obesity is not a disease” Culturally, we tend to see obesity as a result of poor lifestyle choices and character flaws. This is simply not the case. Obesity is a complex and chronic disease that should be taken as seriously as any other illness or disease. It is a medical problem that can increase one’s risk for other diseases and health problems and affects millions worldwide. “Obesity is caused by poor diet and no physical activity” There are many reasons that someone may be affected by the disease of obesity. While poor diet and lack of physical activity can contribute to obesity, they are not the only factors that can cause it. Sometimes obesity can be caused by genetics, medication or even rare diseases. For example, some medications that are used to help someone with physical or mental illnesses may cause weight gain which can lead to obesity. There are also people who are genetically predisposed to obesity and may struggle with it from birth. While diet and exercise certainly play a role in someone’s health, it is not the sole cause or treatment for obesity. Ken Chahine , founder and CEO at Nectar Life Sciences on your radar. Ken has a fascinating story: a child of immigrant parents, neither of whom finished elementary school, he earned a PhD in Biochemistry (U of Michigan) and a JD in patent law. After transforming the field of genetic testing for genealogy as General Manager of Ancestry DNA , he founded Nectar, a health tech company revolutionizing the allergy space with at-home allergy testing and treatment with sublingual drops . In grad school, Ken suffered from severe allergies that made lab work in goggles near-impossible. When he discovered the healthcare system’s solution for chronic allergy sufferers is constant medications (average = 3 meds per day) and/or painful, inconvenient shots, he knew there had to be a better way. Just a sample of what Ken can elaborate on: First-hand experience with allergies as a chronic condition and advocating for the consumer Long-term benefits of at-home allergy testing + treatment Why sublingual (under the tongue) treatment is already standard in Europe as a safer alternative to subcutaneous (shots) How he transitioned into the allergy space after revolutionizing the genetic science behind Ancestry.com Predictions for holistic approaches in the healthcare space
