Forty years ago DC Comics published Crisis on Infinite Earths. That twelve issue series (plus a handful of crossover issues) was part celebration of DC's fiftieth birthday and part house cleaning. Worlds lived, worlds died and the DC Universe was never the same. To celebrate what was, at one point, a holy text to my generation of comic book fans I thought it would be fun to look at what the Superman family was up to during the story. Joining me on this journey is three time Eisner award winning journalist (for Women Writing About Comics) Cori McCreery. Cori and I have been friends for years and I thought it was high time that I had her on the show, especially considering one of the Super Family members we discussed. See, Cori loves Supergirl and considering Crisis was a big story for the OG Kara Zor-El it seemed like "sitting down" with Cori would be a good idea. While the bulk of the episode (the back half, as a matter of fact) concerns Supergirl, we also discuss two Supermen and a Superboy. We go over my love of the Earth-2 Superman, how the Earth-1 Superman didn't play a huge part in this extremely important story, and the introduction of the Superboy of Earth-Prime, who also didn't play a huge part in this Crisis, but would go on to be part of another Crisis two decades later where things...happened. Then we go into Supergirl and why her death in this story was so important. We also go on a few tangents, which is almost required on one of my shows. This time out I am joined by award winning author Keith R.A. DeCandido to talk about Superman: The Man of Tomorrow from 2020. This film launched a new animated cinematic universe and did so by showing us the early days of Superman. Keith and I cover a lot of ground during our conversation including, but not limited to, the many origins of Superman we've seen since 2004, why I really don't care for Lobo, the Martian Manhunter's role in the film, Lois Lane, jerk Perry White, and even a little bit of Spider-Man right there at the end. I also share my unfiltered feelings on Max Landis's Superman: American Alien. I want to thank Keith for coming on the show. Anyway, I am joined by legendary comic book artist Jon Bogdanove to talk about the film since he has more than a passing knowledge with not only the story, but also with the character of Steel. We have a great conversation about what about the film worked and the few things that didn't and how my opinion of the film has changed over the years. We also talk about how Jon came to be part of the Superman creative team, his approach to drawing the character, how one of his stories has now become a popular meme when discussing fascism, and how the Zero Hour crossover issue of Superman: The Man of Steel nearly broke Jon but also made him a better artist. Another week, another tangent from Moving Kryptonian Images. This should be the last one. Promise. Anyway, in a weird way this episode could be considered an addendum to the conversation I had with Russ Burlingame about All-Star Superman. In the time between that episode and this one, another adaptation of that story has been released. On June 24, 2025 Penguin Random House put out an audiobook version of All-Star Superman with a cast that includes Marc Thompson, Kristen Sieh, Christopher Smith, Matthew Amendt, Scott Brick, Sean Kenin Elias-Reyes, Robert Fass, January LaVoy, Saskia Maarleveld, Brandon McInnis, and Ray Porter. I've been wanting DC to do more in the audio realm, especially with Superman, and it's cool that this came along. Joining me this time to discuss the audiobook and the story in general is the woman that adapted the story. Meghan Fitzmartin is no stranger to either writing adaptations of DC characters or writing the characters for the comics. Her credits include Dark Crisis: Young Justice, Tim Drake: Robin, and Batman: Urban Legends as well as the animated film Justice Society: World War II and both parts of Justice League and Rwby: Superheroes and Huntsman. In a pinned post over on Blue Sky she wrote that you could ask her anything about All-Star Superman and I thought I would take her up on that offer. For a little over an hour we discuss a variety of topics, including what fantastic comic turned Meghan into a lifelong fan, how Adventures in Odyssey led to her love of audio dramas, what went into turning Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's comic book story into an audiobook, her feelings on Bizarro speak, who Lex Luthor would have voted for in the recent election, which live action Lois Lane made her love the character, and so much more. For various reasons, the next installment of Moving Kryptonian Images has been delayed. But...that doesn't mean that I don't have a new episode of the show to release. Because I care. Recently I sat down with Andrew Leyland (you know, my co-host on The Overlooked Dark Knight and the co-host of Hey Kids Comics and the host of The Amazing Spider-Man From The Beginning ) and we talked about three times where Superman, either directly or indirectly, crossed paths with The Fantastic Four. Why? Because the FF are getting a new movie a few weeks after Superman gets his new movie and I like jumping on bandwagons. Mercenary? Yes. Do I care? Not really. Anyway, Andy used to co-host a Fantastic Four show and we're friends, so this episode seemed like a good idea. We have a brief chat about our histories with the Fantastic Four, our thoughts on their previous cinematic efforts, why you shouldn't watch the 2015 film, and then we get into some comics. First up are Adventures of Superman issues 466 and 468, which feature Superman going up against a very Fantastic Four like team, one of which ends up being a pretty big deal. Then we talk about the Superman/Fantastic Four treasury crossover from 1999, which features the previously mentioned big deal. Finally, we talk about Fantastic Four issues 249 and 250 where the FF go up against Gladiator in a story that came about because John Byrne had beef with E. Nelson Bridwell. Welcome to a very special installment of the podcasting maxi-series called Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman ! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! In 2018, the most famous (or, as some would say, infamous) Superman story of all time got a second chance at an animated film. Despite looking more like a New 52 story, The Death of Superman was a closer adaptation to the original comic book story than the 2007 version. Because of that, I wanted to do something special with this episode and the next one and having one of the architects of said original comic book story seemed like the way to go. Joining me for this episode is Jerry Ordway and the conversation we had touches on the animated film but goes far beyond it as well. Jerry shares his thoughts on the movie, but also what it was like attending a screening in New York City where he got to meet some of the cast and crew. We also touch on the behind the scenes of the original comic book version of the death of Superman, how Jerry broke into comics, his early career and how quitting DC led to him getting more work, the early days of the Post Crisis era, and so much more. He also talks about his visit to the set of the new Superman film and what it was like meeting the new Superman and Lex Luthor. I cannot thank Jerry enough for appearing on this episode. The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! Jon Wilson (he of of Ninjas and Bots , Babylon 5: Thirty Years Later , and The Spider Diaries ) returns to talk about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It is both fair and accurate to say that from the time it was announced and especially when it was released that this movie has garnered a lot of controversy. Not real controversy. I mean...there are many, many, many real controversies in the world that we should be arguing about, but for some reason this movie gets brought up again and again. Seriously. The world's on fire. And not in a good way. And people still focus on this film. It's wild. Though, how much of a leg to stand on do I have? I've been doing a whole series about Superman movies. Anyway, Jon and I have another honest conversation about the movie and once again I chose to take on the movie on the movie's terms. We talk about the Bat costume, whether or not this was the right take on Batman for the first film in a new iteration, what potential crimes Batman committed...man, we talked about Batman a lot. But we also talked about Superman, Lex Luthor, Lois, and much, much more. The good. The bad. What we liked. What we didn't like. It was a fun two hours. Welcome to a controversial installment of the podcasting maxi-series called Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman ! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! I think it is both fair and accurate to say that Man of Steel is a contentious Superman film, at least as far as the Superman fan community is concerned. It was a movie that brought in a new generation of fans, but it was also a movie that did things to the character that some (not all, some) older fans had serious problems while other older fans really liked it and what could best be described as a bar fight broke out on social media platforms and, in some corners of those platforms, that fight is still going on. Talking about Man of Steel is much more complicated than it needs to be. Because of that, I wanted to talk to someone that loves Man of Steel but is still willing to have a genuine and honest conversation about the film. Which is why I asked my good friend Jon Wilson (he of Ninjas and Bots , Babylon 5: Thirty Years Later , and The Spider Diaries ) to not only join me for this episode, but also the next one. We talk about all of the big moments of the film as well as the moments that caused the most controversy. The new version of Krypton, Jonathan Kents "maybe", Jonathan Kent's death, this version of Zod, the neck snap heard round the world, and Zack Snyder and David Goyer's take on Superman in general. This time out Tyler Patrick of The Krypton Report joins me to talk about Superman Unbound. This animated film is based on the Brainiac storyline from Action Comics issues 866-870, which was written by Geoff Johns with art by Gary Frank and is the second animated film covered in this series where Superman faces off against Brainiac. As has become the norm with these animated films Tyler and I talk about both the movie and the comic, comparing and contrasting the two and even going into the time period the story was originally published. We also talk about Supergirl's role in the film, the voice cast, the animated, and the music. Plus, in the middle I fight a bear. Okay, I don't fight a bear at any point in the episode. Welcome to second in my Summer Special series, which I'm doing because there's a big time Superman film coming out and extra content seemed like a fun idea. Also, I'm in the middle of big-time mega-series on the main show, and that series is pretty rigid in its format, so specials were the only way I was going to be able to talk about the things I am going to be talking about. This time out I am joined by Rob O'Connor and Alan Burke of the All-Star Superfan Podcast to discuss a story that many Superman fans consider to be on the greatest of all time. Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow originally appeared in Superman #423 and Action Comics #583 and served as the close out to Silver and Bronze Age era that was just about to be shown the door in favor of John Byrne's Man of Steel series. Written by Alan Moore with art by Curt Swan, George Perez, and Kurt Schaffenberger, this story tells the story of Superman's final days, which are filled with violence, heart ache, and a last stand in the Fortress of Solitude. So... not exactly a laugh riot, but a compelling story, nonetheless. Rob, Alan, and I tackle this story from every angle. We talk about the previously mentioned violence, our favorite parts, our less than favorite parts, Superman's actions at the end of the story, and ask whether or not this was a fitting end to the Silver and Bronze Age of Superman. We also get into the thorny debate of whether or not Superman should kill or not, which is an issue that has come up a lot in Superman fandom since the snap heard round the world in Man of Steel. Welcome to a...dare I write it...SUPER sized installment of the podcasting maxi-series called Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman ! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! This time out I am shaking up the format. Slightly. This time I am joined by old friend Charlie Niemeyer (host of Charlie's Geekcast and Ranger Chronicles ) to talk about Superman vs. The Elite, the 2012 animated adaptation of 2001's Action Comics #775. What's So Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way is considered by many Superman fans to be a stone cold classic, and the movie adaptation seems to be well regarded as well. Charlie and I talk about both the comic and the movie and while there are many aspects of both that we liked we also have some reservations about them. We talk about the cultural climate of 2001 and, to a lesser extent, 2012 (when the movie came out) as well as the animation, the story, how I really wanted an overt homage to Rocky IV at one point in the film, and the differences between the ending of the movie and the comic. The first full trailer for James Gunn's Superman film dropped on May 14th and because there is a little-known federal law that was passed with full bipartisan support several years ago that states if you are a Superman content creator and a new Superman trailer (teaser or otherwise) drops, you have to do a reaction video/episode within 10 business days or face substantial fines and possibly jail time. Given how well I would do in prison (or rather how well I wouldn't do in prison) and the fact that I couldn't pay any kind of fine, substantial or otherwise, I thought it would be better to get this done as soon as possible. Joining me to talk about the trailer is my good friend Jon M Wilson, who you might know from such podcasts as Superman in Crisis, Babylon 5: Thirty Years Later, and 90s Ninjas and Bots, and we have a grand old time talking about the trailer. Hey there and welcome to the first in a series of Summer Specials here on It All Comes Back to Superman. I don't know if you've heard but there's a new Superman movie coming out this summer and both DC Comics and DC Studios have declared this to be the Summer of Superman ! I don't know if this is a legally binding type of thing, but I felt obligated to celebrate this with a series of specials because I can't do it in the main show because I'm in the midst of a huge mega-series called Moving Kryptonian Images. So, these specials will allow me to do some fun Superman content that doesn't have anything to do with the movies. Notice I wrote, "...to do with the movies," because this first special is about a live action version of Superman. And Lois. Back in December of last year the final episode of Superman and Lois aired and it was very emotional for me. I loved that show. I loved the cast. I loved the writing, and it was very hard to watch the show end after four great seasons. I thought about doing a "saying goodbye" episode at the end of last year, but it didn't feel right. I wanted to let some time pass before I collected my thoughts and shared them with the world. And that's what this episode is. Me, looking back on this, the most unlikely Superman show of all time, and talking about why I loved it so much. Joining me is my co-host over on The Overlooked Dark Knight (as well as the co-host of Hey Kids Comics with his son Micheal and the host of The Amazing Spider-Man from the Beginning ) Andrew Leyland, who was also a fan of the show. We talk about the early days when Tyler was a guest star on the Supergirl television series, the crossovers, the Crisis, and then we get into the series proper. It's a fun, sometimes silly, sometimes poignant conversation where Andy and I tell you why this show was so special. It's a celebration of the 85th anniversary of the Justice Society of America! It was spearheaded by my friend Shag from The Fire and Water Podcast Network and there are dozens of blogs and podcasts that are all doing entries and episodes focusing on some aspect of the JSA's history. In this, the first of two specials that you'll be getting, I talk about the Justice Society of America storyline Thy Kingdom Come . Superman/Doomsday was released in September of 2007 and was not so much an adaptation of The Death and Return of Superman saga as something that was inspired by that story. Anthony and I discuss the pros and cons of taking story beats from the Death and Return (an important story for both of us) as well as the voice cast and the special features that came with the original DVD release. I also spend a good more time than necessary complaining about the Death and Return omnibus that came out at the same time. It's Superman Day! Yes, once again April 18th has rolled around and another Superman Day has come to pass and this year I was in a position to actually do something about it and that "thing" is something I've been planning for literally years and now I am finally getting it done. Welcome to an installment of the podcasting maxi-series Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman that was not planned at all and came together quickly! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! In the previous episode Adam Mallinger and I talked about three scripts that were ultimately unproduced on the long, nineteen year road to what would become Superman Returns. One of those scripts was Superman Reborn, which Adam and I assumed was an earlier draft. What we didn't know at the time is that the first draft of what was originally called Superman: The New Movie had gotten a full blown reading at the Broadway Theater in Hollywood thanks to funding from the Kaplan-Loring Foundation. I mentioned this in post on the last episode and even included a link to the YouTube video in the show notes at the website. The man who spearheaded this whole thing is named David Kocher and he was nice enough to sit down with me and talk about how this reading came about. We touch on David's origins as a fan of Superman, how he met Mark Jones (who had the first draft) finding a director, the casting, and everything that went into the reading. We also have a spirited discussion about Superman movies in general and David shares his thoughts on the film that is hitting theaters in July. I can't thank David enough for agreeing to be part of this series. As I indicated earlier this reading came seemingly out of nowhere and talking to David and watching the reading fit right in to what I've been doing for the past few months. The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! This time out I am not covering a movie, either live action or animated. I am covering three scripts to Superman films that were never made. Joining me is Adam Mallinger, who not only worked as a script reader early in his career but was a staff writer on the CW series Superman and Lois. Adam and I go through drafts of Superman Reborn (which, if made, would have brought back Christopher Reeve as Superman, Superman Lives (written by Kevin Smith), and Superman: Flyby (written by J.J. Abrams). We discuss our overall feelings on these scripts, Kevin Smith, the role the internet plays in how movies get made, Ain't It Cool News, and more. We also dig into the differences between a script and the movie that is eventually made of that script. This time out I am unscripted and off the cuff! Anything can happen! Damn the man! Save The Empire! Or something like that. In all seriousness, this time out I present an episode where I just sit in front of the microphone and go over all of my thoughts about the Superman film that is coming out next July. With the release of the teaser trailer I thought it was time to finally collect my thoughts about everything we've seen from the film thus far and get them out in a mostly coherent fashion. I start with the first images we were shown and then go forward from there. Topics include but are not limited to the first costume reveal, the set photos, and then (finally) I get to the trailer itself. I don't do a full frame by frame break down but I do go through the moments that stood out to me. I also talk about what I think the plot is going to be, why comparing this teaser trailers to the ones from the past is both valid and not fair, the thing about this film that separates it from past feature film versions, and more. This time out I once again sit down with Ed Gross, who is no stranger to books about Superman or books about pop culture in general. Ed and I have a great conversation that starts with us talking about the finale of Superman and Lois before getting into how this book (which you will need a spotter to read) came about. We chat about the differences in writing this book compared to Ed's last Superman book Voices From Krypton, how to balance the comic book side of Superman's history with all of the other places he has shown up over the decades, where we are in terms of Superman's place in pop culture, and so much more. Welcome to the third episode of It All Comes Back to Superman Series 2, the very irregular reaffirmation of my Kryptonian faith. This time out I'm hopping into the Time Bubble and heading back to 1994 to look at the DC Comics event Zero Hour: Crisis in Time. And I am not alone. Joining me to talk about the series is none other than the writer/penciller on that series Dan Jurgens! Dan was nice enough to spend about an hour with me to talk about how Zero Hour came about, what it was like writing and drawing five issues that were coming out weekly while also juggling all of the characters and books that were connected to the event. Dan also tells me why some of the promotional artwork and the artwork created for the distributors that existed at the time isn't reprinted in the collected editions that have been published in the last few years, why the Justice Society was taken off the table during the story, his favorite parts of the story, and how much he got paid to draw the cover to the zero issue. After that we discuss the Zero Month issues of the Superman books and where Kenny Braverman came from. Finally, Dan talks a bit about the Zero Hour 30th Anniversary Special that is coming out on the day this episode is dropping! This time I am re-presenting an episode of a show I did for like five seconds called Fortress of Baileytude Showcase Presents. Or something like that. It was this weird thing I was trying to do that just didn't catch on. To be honest, this episode should have been on the It All Comes Back to Superman in the first time. Anyway, back in 2018 my good friend the Irredeemable Shag and I spent nearly three hours talking about the Death and Return of Superman phenomena and it was a fun episode to record. We go through the entire event from inception to the return of the one, true Superman. Shag gives a lot of insight about what it was like to be a retailer during those days, and I played a bunch of clips from various news reports that...reported on the event. During the episode I mentioned an Oral History that was on SyFy Wire in 2018. That article doesn't exist anymore, which is a shame. Welcome to the second episode of It All Comes Back to Superman Series Two , the pretty much the same, not really all that new reaffirmation of my Kryptonian faith. I am your host, Michael Bailey, and this time out I am finishing my two part series celebrating Superman's 85th anniversary because…I really want to. It's just that simple. In this installment I look at how Superman's birthday has been celebrated over the decades and how big and small those celebrations have been. The bulk of this section is spent on the 50th anniversary, but that's because his 50th was probably the biggest birthday the character has had judging by the sheer amount of...stuff that happened in and around 1988. I also talk about the barebones celebration from 1968, the almost non-existant celebration from 1998 and how the anniversaries ramped up for 2013 and 2018. After that I talk about the Superman comics and television series that came out in 2023 and what I thought of them. (Note, during the first segment I state that the Lex Luthor and Brainiac makeovers went down in Action Comics #543. This is wrong. It was Action Comics #544. Welcome to the first episode of It All Comes Back to Superman Series Two , the pretty much the same, not really all that new reaffirmation of my Kryptonian faith. I am your host, Michael Bailey, and this time out I am starting a two part series celebrating Superman's 85th anniversary because...I really want to. It's just that simple. For this first installment I do an off the cuff solo episode where I talk about six of the sub-anniversaries happening during Superman's 85th. Superman The Movie, Superman III, the Ruby Spear Superman animated series, the live action Superboy series, Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, and Man of Steel all have big anniversaries this year and I thought it would be fun to go through them all in one shot instead of devoting specific episodes to them for...reasons. Various reasons. Reasons I go through during the episode itself. I mentioned during the episode that I had done a commentary for Superman The Movie back in 2013. That was on episode 153 of Views From The Longbox , which I don't have a handy link to...sadly...because the post with the show notes for that episode no longer exists. Views is readily available on just about all podcatching services, so it should be easy to find. For those interested, episode 155 of Views was a commentary for Superman II and episode 162 was the commentary for Superman IV that I did with Scott Gardner. Not to be outdone, if you search for episode 135 of the Palace of Glittering Delights where Andy Leyland had me on to yak over the "coherence cut" of Superman IV.
