The witches gather at the darkest point of the year to celebrate Yule and the return of the light. In this festive episode, Laylla and Chelle share some of their favorite Yule spells and crafts. Traditions from years past, practices for the present moment, and intentions for winters yet to come. From simple candle magic to honor the longest night to crafting seasonal altar pieces that welcome the sun's rebirth, they explore the many ways witches can work with the energy of the winter solstice. The conversation weaves together the practical and the magical, offering ideas for practitioners at every level. The witches also share tarot spreads designed specifically for this liminal time; one for the winter solstice itself and another for the full Yule season. These spreads help us reflect on what we're releasing with the old year, what seeds we're planting in the dark, and what we're calling forth as the light begins its slow return. Whether you're a seasoned Yule celebrant or new to marking the sabbat, this episode is full of inspiration, warmth, and the quiet magic of midwinter. Pour yourself something warm, light a candle, and join the witches by the fire. Got a question? Send the witches a message here! Support the show Want to send us a letter? Witchy things to review? As the longest night of the year approaches, the witches settle fully into Yule mode with candles lit, trees decorated, and a little seasonal weirdness happily creeping back in. This cozy Solarium episode finds Laylla and Chelle talking Yule preparations, winter self care, and stories of classic Yule cryptids like the Yule Cat, Mari Lwyd, and the ever-watchful Nisse, because of course they do. In the spirit of Yule time giving, Chelle managed to set aside her natural magpie nature to channel Jolly Saint Nick and surprise Laylla with a bag overflowing with gifts sent in by their generous listeners. The witches open mail, read heartfelt letters, and revel in the books, teas, body butters, and beautifully thoughtful surprises that have arrived lately. It’s a warm, laughter-filled episode full of gratitude, gentle spookiness, and winter magic. Pour yourself something comforting, get cozy, and join the witches as they honor the turning of the wheel, the generosity of their community, and the strange and wonderful magic that lives in the darkest nights of the year. voyagerlocale - artist Nature Recycled art The Knarly Knot - Handcrafted Wooden Mugs and More Mystical Blossoms Gift Shop & Tea Bar Dharma Kelleher Witches of Wiccanburg Series Got a question? In the fifth installment of their seven-part Deity Series, the witches turn toward the Goddess in her season of fullness: the Mother, the Maker, the Manifestor, the one who turns raw possibility into living, breathing reality. She is the bright fullness of the moon, the heat of summer, the hum of productivity, and the heartbeat that keeps community alive. Laylla and Chelle explore the Mother not only as the ancient figure of fertility but as a far more expansive and dynamic archetype for today's witches. This episode looks at the Mother as a creator and nurturer. A maker of art, careers, kinship, knowledge, and paths; as the one who carries the Maiden’s vision forward with commitment and devotion; and as the archetype who teaches us how to choose, shape, and sustain the lives we are building. They also examine the deeper historical roots of the Mother Goddess, from the earliest Venus figurines and Paleolithic mother symbols to the great goddesses of world mythology. The witches unpack how these ancient themes influence modern witchcraft and how the Mother archetype has evolved far beyond biological motherhood into a symbol of agency, of creation, and of strength. Whether you are raising children, raising a garden, raising a business, or raising yourself through another chapter of becoming, this episode offers tools, myth, and magical perspective for awakening the Mother within. So brew something comforting, settle in, and join us as we explore the sacred, complex, profoundly human power of the Mother as Maker. Modern Heathen Celebration of Sunwait Got a question? The Triple Goddess Called; She Wants to Update Her Resume The witches continue their series on Divinity in modern witchcraft with the first episode on the triple aspect of Goddess. They begin by discussing one of the most well-known frameworks in modern paganism: Maiden, Mother, Crone. They trace where this concept may have come from, how it became rooted in contemporary witchcraft, and why it still holds power for so many people. But they also look honestly at its limitations. In this episode focusing especially on the Maiden aspect, Laylla and Chelle talk about how titles once meant to empower now feel too narrow, too tied to childbearing, and too limited in their vision of womanhood, personhood, and divinity. They explore what it means to honor a Goddess who contains multitudes, and how we might reimagine these archetypes in ways that reflect lived experience, adult autonomy, creativity, sexuality, and identity beyond gender, fertility, or age. It’s a conversation about myth, culture, and the shifting language of the sacred; and an invitation to rethink the Goddess not as a three-part story, but as a vast and evolving presence that grows with us. 2025's Yule Winter Solstice Card Exchange is live! In this episode the witches sit down with author, teacher, and astrologer Ivo Dominguez Jr. to talk about the re-release of his book Spirit Speak: A Comprehensive Guide to Connect Beyond the Veil . They explore how the book helps witches build clearer relationships with their guides and allies, and what’s changed since he first wrote it. The conversation with Ivo covers a variety of witchy topics. How do daffodil bulbs help explain reincarnation and the oversoul? What do plants have to do with portals and realm walking? And just how many nerdy references can Ivo and Laylla fit into one episode? Naturally, with Ivo in the room, at some point they're going to talk astrology. Together, they unpack the current Mercury retrograde, what this one is stirring up collectively and magically, and some very big astrological events lining up for early 2026. From shifts in collective communication to the energetic themes that may shape the coming year, the discussion makes major astrological shifts understandable. It’s thoughtful, grounded, and full of that signature blend of witchcraft, wisdom, and curiosity; a perfect episode for anyone looking to refine their spirit communication and understand the cosmic weather ahead. In the third installment of our seven-part series on the Aspects of Deity, Laylla and Chelle meet the God as the Sage, the Elder, the Lord of Shadows. This is the God after the battle, after the passion, when the fields have been harvested and the world begins to rest. He is the Holly King, the wise face of the Horned God, the keeper of memory and mystery. In him lives the balance between power and surrender, action and reflection, life and death. The witches discuss His folklore and myth, how to know when the God is reaching out to you, and how to start working with a God. So light your candle against the long night, pour a cup of something your grandpa would appreciate, and join Laylla and Chelle as they follow the God into the deep woods of winter, where silence becomes a teacher and the old gods whisper in the dark. In the second installment of our seven-part series on the Aspects of Deity, the witches turn their attention to the God in his middle face: the Oak King, the Father, the Warrior, and the beating heart of the Sun at its height. This is the God in his full maturity; strong-backed, green-crowned, and alive with the fierce joy of summer. Laylla and Chelle unpack where this Father/Warrior archetype comes from in modern witchcraft, tracing the Oak King’s tangled roots through folklore, Wicca, the Horned God mythos, and the ever-evolving Wheel of the Year. From the midsummer battle with the Holly King, to his role as the wild consort of the Goddess, to his deep connection with the turning of the seasons, the witches explore how this bright, solar force shows up in myth and in lived witchcraft today. They also dig into the bigger question: what does sacred masculinity look like for witches who grew up with Christian Father-God baggage or pop culture’s devil-horn stereotypes? The Oak King reminds us that strength can be tender, that passion can be holy, and that the body, sweating, laughing, loving, and alive is a temple all its own. He’s the god of green forests and hot sun, the Witch-Father who guards the boundaries of the land and teaches us to walk them with courage. Join us for stories, lore, laughter, and a whole lot of leafy green energy as we meet the God in his middle face,; the Oak King in all his vibrant, responsible, moss-scented glory. Got a question? In this first episode of a brand-new seven-part series, Laylla and Chelle begin their exploration of the Aspects of Deity. Their discussion explores the living faces of the God and Goddess as seen through the Witch’s Wheel of the Year. This week, they turn their gaze toward the radiant Young God, the vibrant spark of life, desire, and potential who dances at the dawn of creation. Where did the idea of the Triple God come from? The Youth, the Father-Warrior, and the Sage? And how did this modern mythos take shape alongside the more familiar Triple Goddess? Join the witches as they trace the roots of this divine evolution, from the early works of Margaret Murray and Robert Graves to the writings of Janet and Stewart Farrar, and into the living, breathing practices of witches today. The Young God is the sunrise in human form. He is playful Pan, inspired Lugh, shining Baldr, the divine son whose growth mirrors our own cycles of becoming. Laylla and Chelle share their thoughts on what it means to work with this energy in the modern Craft: how witches can honor renewal, passion, and the power of beginning again; whether that means lighting your first candle of spring or stepping back into your own becoming after a long winter of the soul. So pour a cup of something bright, light your favorite incense, and settle in as we begin this journey through the sacred faces of the divine. The Young God walks among us. Will you answer his call? In true Halloween fashion, the witches are conjuring up some ghost stories! In this spirited episode of Back on the Broomstick, Chelle and Laylla share some of their favorite hauntings. Two of them were chosen to honor a fabulously witchy woman, Helen JoJo, who maintains their Facebook community. Chelle and Laylla absolutely love her witchy soul! Chelle shares stories tied to Helen’s home turf, including Ohio’s eerie Hopewell Cemetery and the elegant ghost known as the Lady in Green who haunts the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza. Laylla, of course, can’t resist a classic “lady in white” tale and brings us the legend of Resurrection Mary from Chicago; the quintessential vanishing hitchhiker ghost that never gets old. There’s also a little witchy rant as Laylla gets into the differences between a Bansidhe and your average haunted cemetery spirit (spoiler: they are not the same thing, folks). And the witches wrap up the episode with a peek into their upcoming Samhain plans. So light a candle, pour some cider, and settle in for tales of ghosts, grief, and the veil growing thin. This Samhain, the veil is thin and so is our patience. Join Laylla and Chelle as they throw open the ancestral gates and step boldly into the shadow with the Dark Goddesses at their side. From Hekate’s unwavering torchlight to the Cailleach’s icy wisdom and Baba Yaga’s bone-deep truths, this episode honors the sacred power found not just in grief and endings, but in rage, rebellion, and raw transformation. Our witches aren't here to pretty it up. They’re unpacking how rage can be a teacher, how darkness isn’t evil, and how goddesses like Lilith, Kali, Sekhmet, and Cerridwen invite us to reclaim the parts of ourselves we were told to fear. Expect myth, magic, personal reflections, and a spell to help you tap into your own dark fire. So light a candle, call in your fiercest ancestors, and step into the dark with us. In this haunted October episode, your favorite witchy besties try their hand at ghost hunting and bring along a very special gift! At CNY Pagan Pride, the witches were gifted a vintage Ouija board from listener Vik (thank you!). Naturally, they had to take it for a spin, and where better than one of the most haunted cemeteries in their neck of the woods (and a place Chelle has had some ghostie experiences in the past), Fallbrook Cemetery in Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Fallbrook cemetery is all that remains of a once thriving coal mining town. Now it's a well known haunted location, with more than its fair share of spooky stories. The witches share the eerie details of what happened from the moment they entered till the time they left and when Chelle's sweet love ignored their advice, and talk all things cemetery etiquette; whether you're ghost hunting, gathering spell components, or simply communing with the spirits who dwell there. This episode also has tips on what to do after visiting a place thick with spirit energy, from grounding and cleansing to offering gratitude and respect. So grab your travel altar and a pinch of salt, and join us for a walk on the witchier side of October. *Future Laylla note - the audio from the tape comes out as messy hissing when I try and convert it to something I can play here. In this special thirteenth Solarium episode, the witches have decided to cackle through something a little different. Inspired by the podcast Beach Too Sandy, Water Too Wet , Laylla and Chelle cozy up with a cup of tea and a toke to read out loud some of the most hilariously unhinged one-star reviews of their favorite haunts around Salem, Massachusetts. No spot is safe from the sass! From The Salem Witch Museum, The Witch House, Count Orlok’s Nightmare Gallery, to the Peabody Essex Museum, and even the very haunted rooms of The Hawthorne Hotel; the witches explore the absurd expectations, bad attitudes, and wild misunderstandings that turn up in the review sections of these iconic places. It’s a spirited roast with plenty of witchy side-eye, a few gasps, and lots of laughter. If you’ve ever rolled your eyes at a tourist tantrum or chuckled at someone’s review of “too many witches in Salem,” this one’s for you. Numbers are math and magick. In this episode Laylla and Chelle have a conversation on the mystical language of numbers and how they weave into modern witchcraft. From ancient Pythagorean teachings to Kabbalah, Tarot, and spirit numbers (angel numbers), they discuss the history of how numbers become woven into magick. For many witches, numbers are sigils, omens, archetypes, and magical blueprints for our lives. You’ll learn how to calculate your Life Path, Destiny, and Soul Urge numbers, and discover what those vibrations reveal about your journey. Laylla and Chelle will also share how repeating numbers like 111, 222, and 333 can show up as messages, and why the Universe loves to talk in patterns. (especially the Fibonacci spiral!) There is even a little discussion, dare I say disagreement, on whether numbers can have meanings that are purely personal, or if they also have an inherent power of their own that carries influence even with personal meaning. What do you think? If you’ve never cracked open a numerology book or you’re already catching 111s and 222s on the regular, this episode is for you. The witches share stories and sprinkle in some down-to-earth magic as they give you practical ideas on how to listen when numbers start whispering. Content Note: This episode contains discussions of symbolic death and transformation that may be challenging for some listeners. We explore themes of figuratively "killing" or releasing parts of ourselves as part of spiritual growth and personal transformation. While these conversations are metaphorical and focus on inner work and letting go, we understand that death imagery and themes of sacrifice, even in a symbolic context, can be difficult or triggering for those processing grief, loss, or other personal experiences. Please take care of yourself and listen when you feel ready. We also thank those of you who reached out to us and mentioned that while you were grateful for the PSA we included, felt that a stronger one was necessary. To those of you walking through grief right now: we see you, we honor the weight you carry, and we hold you tenderly with our magick and in our hearts. May you find gentleness with yourselves in the dark seasons, and know that you are not alone in your sorrow. This episode is a dark conversation for the dark half of the year. The witches sit down with Iberian Shamaness, Priestess, and author Ness Bosch to talk about her work, her book Sacred Bones, Magic Bones, and the deep magick of inner work and symbolic sacrifice. Living in Scotland and teaching internationally, Ness brings a grounded and ancient perspective to the conversation. Together, they explore powerful mythic figures like Persephone, Inanna, Cailleach, and Ariadne; goddesses who carry wounds and wisdom, and who show us how to walk willingly into the shadows of transformation. This episode is full of the intensity of the season. The three witches discuss the themes of sacrifice, symbolic death, and of letting go to make room for something new when the light returns. Prepare to be challenged, comforted, and called inward as Ness shares insights on spiritual death, ancestral healing, and the fierce power of dark goddesses, even when wounded. It's an episode about finding sacredness in surrender, and magic in the bones we carry. National Sexual Assault Hotline Text HOPE to 64673 to get support directly on your device. In the final episode of our five-part Elemental Energy series, the witches turn their attention to the most mysterious element of all, Spirit. Unlike earth, air, fire, or water, Spirit isn’t something you can touch or see. It’s the invisible force that connects everything, the energy that breathes life into matter, and the current that runs through all magickal work. Join Laylla and Chelle as they try to define the undefinable. What is Spirit? How does it show up in our practices? And how is it different from working with Deity or calling on the Ancestors? From spirals and stillness to veils and voids, this episode dives deep into the element that weaves the rest together. Whether you think of it as Akasha, aether, quintessence, or simply the magic in the air, Spirit invites us to listen, to feel, and to remember that we are always connected; to each other, to the earth, and to the divine. In this companion meditation episode to our Air Element discussion we’re slowing things down and tuning in to the most natural and magical tool we have, our breath. Laylla leads you through a gentle guided meditation with the element of Air, using two breathwork techniques to help you connect with the energies of tranquility, inspiration, and clarity of communication. Through a blend of witchy visualization and intentional breathing; this practice is designed to calm the chaos, sharpen the mind, and leave you feeling light, steady, and fully present. The meditation uses two breathing techniques. The first is the physiological sigh which is shown to release tension and activate the body’s natural relaxation response. The second is a simple mantra breath to anchor your awareness and raise air energy within. Whether you're new to meditation or have been practicing for a long spell (terrible pun intended), this is a beautiful way to connect with the element of Air through your body, your breath, and your spirit Got a question? In the second episode of their five-part elemental series, the witches turn their attention to Air; the whispering wind, the breath of life, and the spark of inspiration. Chelle and Laylla explore how this often underestimated element shows up in magical practice and daily life. From the feather-light qualities of thought and intention to the power of voice and communication, the witches talk about the qualities of and ways to work with air. They discuss the correspondences of Air like intellect, clarity, and beginnings. The witches also touch on how directional associations can vary depending on your tradition, with Air being tied to East in many Western traditions but North in other paths. Laylla shares a breath and bubble spell to help you connect with the energy of Air in an simple yet powerful way, combining visualization, intention, and breath to cleanse, charge, or empower yourself and your tools. So light your incense, whisper a spell to the breeze, and let Air move through your mind and spirit. Sometimes magic is in the hush of a breath, the turn of a page, or the way an idea can stir something deep within. Air is waiting, witch, may your thoughts be clear and your words carry power. In this Lughnasadh 2025 episode, the witches celebrate the first harvest and the lessons woven into this sacred turning of the Wheel. They honor Tailtiu, the earth goddess whose hard work cleared the land for future generations, and reflect on how her story calls us to roll up our sleeves and tend our own lives with care and intention. But this year we remember that Tailtiu worked herself to death, and that honoring her means not only embracing hard work, but also learning the sacred art of self-care. They share ways to find balance during this busy season, from simple magical routines to small rituals of rest that keep your energy grounded and sustainable. They also honor Lugh, the bright and many-skilled god, and the sun’s golden power that ripens the fields. Crafts take center stage this year, with a special focus on drying and preserving herbs, a timeless way to honor the harvest while stocking your magical pantry for the months ahead. Whether you’re baking bread, crafting charms, or simply watching the August sun dip low, this episode invites you to honor the work, the rest, and the magick of this abundant season. Got a question? In part two of our Spellcraft Summer series, the witches pull out their journals (ahem, grimoires!) and walk you through the art and practice of writing your own spells. Whether you’re brand new to spellcraft or looking to make your magic more personal and effective, Laylla and Chelle are here to demystify the process and offer some grounded, magical guidance. They talk about intention as the core of any spell, how to choose the right format (spoken, written, enacted), and how to weave in correspondences, timing, and energy-raising techniques. You’ll hear why not all spells need to rhyme (but why it can help), and how even the simplest charm can carry big power when it’s aligned with your will and spirit. Chelle shares tips for organizing your spell structure, and Laylla explores the importance of storytelling, symbolism, and making your magic yours. This episode is part practical guide, part creative cauldron, and all about helping you craft spells that feel real, rooted, and ready to work. Got a question? Send the witches a message here! Welcome to the heart of Spellcraft Summer, witches! In the first episode of this special 3-part series on Spellcrafting 101, Laylla and Chelle crack open the grimoire to explore the foundational building blocks of spellwork: correspondences. What exactly are they, and why do they matter? The witches unpack the classic concept of "like attracts like" and the Doctrine of Signatures, an old magical belief that nature marks each plant and object with a clue (or signature) to its purpose. From colors and crystals to herbs, elements, days of the week, and planetary energies, the witches explore how correspondences give your spellwork structure, symbolism, and energetic alignment. They also talk about why you don’t have to memorize every book table out there and why Chelle swears by journaling your own experiences to build a personal system that’s way more powerful than a one-size-fits-all chart. Whether you're just beginning your spellwork journey or looking to refresh your practice, this episode is your warm, witchy invitation to deepen your magical language and start casting spells that truly speak to your magickal self. In this episode of Back on the Broomstick, Laylla and Chelle welcome back Lalania Simone to talk about her brand new deck, Wise Earth Medicine Tarot . Blending traditional tarot structure with the healing wisdom of the natural world, this deck brings together animals and plants to offer grounded, earth-based insight for personal reflection, growth, and divination. The witches and Lalania explore how this deck goes beyond the typical human-centered imagery of tarot, tapping into the primal intelligence of animals, plants, and the land itself. Each card offers not just traditional tarot meaning, but also the unique medicine of the featured creature or plant, allowing readers to connect with nature’s wisdom in a deeply personal way. From the insights of the poppy to the soaring message of a hummingbird, the deck opens up new pathways of intuitive understanding. They also chat about how Wise Earth Medicine Tarot can support personal growth, magickal practice, meditation, and spellwork, as well as how nature-based tarot decks can sometimes help us reach more authentic messages from within. https://redwheelweiser.com/book/wise-earth-medicine-tarot-9781578638635/ https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/lalaniasimone/the-myth-weaver-tarot https://cosmicseedstudio.com/ Got a question? Chelle and Laylla are back with witchy answers to your magical questions! This episode is a mixed cauldron of questions about protection, spellwork, deity devotion, and personal practice. First up, they share ways to cast simple but powerful protection spells for loved ones who are traveling. From energy shielding and enchanted comfort items to charm bags, black tourmaline stones, and even a charmed trinket tucked into a suitcase, there are plenty of accessible ways to send a little extra magical safety along for the ride. Next, the witches talk about whether spirit work is required in witchcraft (spoiler: it’s not). They explore how every witchcraft path is different, and how honoring personal boundaries is an important part of magical practice. Then they tackle the mystery of opening the third eye—explaining what it really means, how it connects to introspection and awareness, and offering easy tools like meditation, visualization, herbal allies like mugwort, and crystals such as lapis lazuli to support the journey. They also offer spellwork suggestions for anyone facing obstacles with paperwork, appeals, or red tape. Road opening spells take center stage here, and the witches explain why hexing large corporations may help you let off steam but may not bring a lot of success. Finally, they explore how to build a personal relationship with deity for those feeling drawn worship. The witches share ideas for offerings, altar building, and why learning can be the ultimate act of devotion. It’s another packed episode full of down-to-earth advice, encouragement, and plenty of magical inspiration to bring into your own practice. Got a question? Send the witches a message here! In this episode of Back on the Broomstick, Laylla and Chelle mark World Tarot Day, celebrated each year on May 25th, a magical holiday dreamed into being by Den Elder back in 2003. The witches also discuss Chelle's birthday! A witchy holiday dreamed into being by her parents back in the late 1900's! The witches take this special day as an opportunity to reflect on their own long-standing relationships with the cards, sharing how Tarot has shaped their practices, their insights, and their spiritual growth. They explore the many uses of Tarot beyond readings; a tool for spellwork, meditation, dreamwork, altar magic, and connecting with guides or ancestors. Chelle introduces a brand-new Tarot spread, Flowers of May - Where Will I Bloom, crafted to find insights on what you need and where you're going; while Laylla dives into why card positions matter, how symbolic placement can shape meaning, and how to start crafting your own spreads with confidence and creativity. And in a perfect bit of cosmic timing, the witches note that Chelle’s birthday is just a few days later, on May 31st! Proof that Tarot and Chelle were meant to walk the same path. Call it synchronicity, fate, or just good astrology, even the stars knew that Chelle and Tarot would be close! Chelle and Laylla sit down with artist, astrologer, and tarot reader Natalie Labriola to explore her new book, Tarot: Timeless Secrets of the Ancient Mirror . Together, they unpack how tarot works as a map for personal reflection, offering a tool to navigate those tricky, shadowy corners of the self that can be hard to access through logic alone. The witches and Natalie discuss how the tarot can help us see what's lingering in our blind spots, bringing unconscious patterns, emotions, and truths into the light where they can be worked with intentionally. From using the cards for self-inquiry to approaching tarot as both an ancient oracle and a modern mirror, this conversation is rich with practical wisdom and a touch of the mystical. In a delightful twist, the conversation reveals a synchronistic connection between Natalie's book and the Fool's Journey Meditation Ritual Chelle and Laylla recently led. Additionally, the witches inquire about Natalie's approach to reading reversed cards. Despite including reversed meanings in her book, Natalie shares her personal practice and insights, offering listeners a nuanced perspective on interpreting tarot spreads. This episode invites you to sit with your deck, listen, reflect, and remember that sometimes the answers you seek are already within. You may just need the right mirror to see them. Laylla and Chelle sit down with author and druid Christian Brunner to discuss his latest book, Alpine Witchery: Austrian Folk Magic, Lore & Spellcraft. Drawing from trial records spanning the 15th to 19th centuries, Christian unveils nearly fifty authentic spells and the captivating stories behind them, offering a rare glimpse into the lives of the accused witches of the Austrian Alps . Unlike the Salem witch trials, where many of the accused were innocent, some individuals in these Austrian trials were indeed practitioners of folk magic. The trio delves into the cultural and historical contexts of these practices, exploring how magic was interwoven with daily life in the Alpine regions. They also discuss the unique ingredients and rituals found in these spells, such as using animal parts or specific herbs, and how they can be adapted for modern practice. And of course, it wouldn’t be a conversation with Christian Brunner without a few jaw-dropping spell ingredients pulled straight from the old grimoires. One 400-year-old spell includes a smokable blend involving pig poo...yes, really. Even Laylla, known for her love of smokable spells and adventurous herbal blends, had to draw the line. There’s natural... and then there’s no thank you! Sometimes history is magickal, and sometimes it just stinks. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a practitioner of folk magick, or simply curious about witch trials, this episode offers a fascinating journey into a lesser-known aspect of European witchcraft. In this Beltane 2025 episode of Back on the Broomstick, Laylla and Chelle light the fires of the season with a warm and witchy exploration of all things Beltane; from ancient rites to modern magic. They begin with a look at the history of the May Queen, a surprisingly short but deeply symbolic tradition that still holds power in today’s rituals. Whether you’re dancing around a maypole or honoring the turning of the Wheel quietly at home, this episode is full of inspiration for how to celebrate Beltane as a solitary witch, including ribbon magic, sacred fire ideas, and simple ways to connect with the rising energy of the land. The witches share a spell to honor the May Queen or May King within yourself, tapping into your own sacred vitality, creativity, and wild joy. They also talk about the community from their old Beltane festivals and how excited they are to share another Beltane with that same group! The witches are more than ready for open fields, bonfires, ecstatic dance, and the deep magic of shared seasonal celebration! They touch on a bit of current controversy too; specifically some recent conversation around the Beltane Fire Society in Edinburgh, where a new tax may be causing issues with this years celebration. No, it’s not about how they pronounce Edinburgh wrong (though, yes, they have in the past), but rather a conversation around public paganism and potential targeted harassment in the form of administrative paperwork and fees. Whether you’re rekindling old traditions or crafting new ones, this episode invites you to stand in your own sacred spark, celebrate the beauty of Beltane, and remember that the fire lives in you, too. In this episode of Back on the Broomstick, Laylla and Chelle are joined by astrologer Laurie Farrington to discuss her latest book, How to Read and Interpret a Birth Chart: Guideposts for Understanding Natal Astrology . Laurie brings decades of experience interpreting the stars through a deeply intuitive and grounded lens, and this book reflects her commitment to helping others align with their soul path through astrology. During their conversation, Chelle confesses her long-standing fear of astrology (mostly due to the math) and Laylla drops an astrology secret of her own. Together, they dig into what sun, moon, and rising signs really say about us, why Laylla thinks astrology charts are basically a celestial Tarot spread, and whether Mercury retrograde is truly something to fear or just misunderstood cosmic drama. The witches are celebrating Ostara a little late this year and that’s totally okay! Chelle and Laylla share why waiting for the actual signs of spring in your own environment can make your sabbat celebrations more meaningful, rooted, and energetically aligned. The wheel of the year doesn’t always turn on the calendar’s schedule, and honoring your local land’s rhythm can be just as sacred as any celestial festival date. Laylla shares a beautiful Ostara-themed Tarot spread she found on Tumblr that focuses on renewal, what’s germinating in your life, and what’s ready to bloom. Plus, she unveils a natural eggshell spell she created to harness the energy of new life and fresh intention. Laylla and Chelle spill the enchanted tea on their magical adventures at the 2025 Sacred Space Conference! From leading their deeply transformative Fool Meditation Ritual to hugging the absolute spell out of some beloved listeners, it was a whirlwind of candles, community, and just the right amount of chaos! The witches share stories from the workshops they attended and the brilliant witches they connected with...yes, we’re talking about Mat Auryn, Jhenah Telyndru, Amy Blackthorn, Mhara Starling, Kristoffer Hughes, Christian Brannen, and so many more. There were spellbooks, sacred moments, and possibly a few awkward ones too! Like when Chelle said something very, very cheeky to Kristoffer Hughes, who (thank the gods) found it hilarious. Laylla, on the other hand, may or may not have had an awkward entanglement with Jhenah Telyndru and is now fairly convinced she has to avoid the Avalonian Priestess out of sheer embarrassment. Between the deep spiritual work and the laugh-until-you-snort moments, this episode is part recap, part celebration, and all community. What if you don’t vibe with either air or fire for the suit of Swords? And do all witches really visualize with crystal clarity during meditations? (Spoiler alert: nope, and that’s okay!) Laylla and Chelle talk about aphantasia and face blindness in magical practice, how to build a system that feels right for you, and why you don’t have to “see” to be deeply intuitive and connected. The witches are calling upon the divine in this episode of Back on the Broomstick as Laylla and Chelle share ten (give or take) of the gods and goddesses they work with in their magical practice. From the cauldron-stirring wisdom of Ceridwen to the hearty laughter and boundless generosity of The Dagda, they discuss the deities that have shaped their paths, guided their spells, and occasionally smacked them upside the head with a life lesson or two. And in a shocking twist that will surprise absolutely no one, Chelle will, of course, have Hecate on the list. The witches also take a moment to talk about the Blood Moon that graced the skies on March 14th, bringing with it a transformative energy perfect for removing obstacles from your path and maybe a little bit of bringing justice to light. What did this lunar powerhouse mean for the witches, and can you still tap into the full moon energy even after it's passed? Whether you already have deities you work with or are just starting to feel the pull of divine magic, this episode is a mix of history, personal stories, and a whole lot of witchy laughter. Grab your grimoire, pour one out for the gods, and join Laylla and Chelle for a divine discussion filled with magic, mischief, and a little moonlit madness. Many witches dream of making a pilgrimage to Salem, Massachusetts; the so-called "Witch Capital of the USA," where the echoes of history, magic, and commercialization all blend together in a way that is uniquely, well… Salem. But is it truly a witch’s Mecca? And is it worth making the trek? In this episode Laylla and Chelle unpack the real Salem, the history, the hype, and what it means to visit as a practicing witch. They share their favorite historical sites, from the somber Witch Trials Memorial to hidden gems that go beyond the tourist-trap veneer. They also give the lowdown on the best places to shop, the ones that actually cater to witches rather than just Halloween-loving tourists. But Salem is more than just a fun weekend trip, visiting as a witch can be a powerful act of remembrance and honorfor the victims of the 1692 Witch Trials, none of whom were actual witches but all of whom suffered from fear, superstition, and the brutal power of accusation. Laylla and Chelle discuss how modern witches can hold space for these lost souls while embracing the magic that Salem has come to represent. The conversation also expands beyond Salem to address witch discrimination today because witches and magical practitioners still face real persecution, the shadow of history still looms large in today’s world. Laylla and Chelle welcome the very witchy author Judika Illes for a magical conversation. They talk about her newest book, "Witches: A Compendium," a beautifully crafted tribute to witches across history who dared to embrace their power and walk their own unique paths. From ancient enchantresses to modern-day magic makers, this book is a celebration of all things witchy and wise. Of course, no chat with Judika would be complete without mentioning her iconic magical tome, "the encyclopedia of 5000 spells." The book so massive it could double as a doorstop, a weapon, or an altar in a pinch! They share some laughs about its legendary size while also honoring the incredible depth of magic packed into those pages. The witches also share a secret dream of becoming the scary witch who lives alone in the woods...you know, the one people whisper about with equal parts fear and fascination. Of course, Laylla and Chelle agree they’d totally share a cozy cottage in the forest together because, let’s face it, being scary is way more fun with your best witch by your side! This episode is a magical blend of wisdom, humor, and heartfelt reflections on the importance of staying true to yourself and boldly reclaiming the title of witch, especially in today’s world. After digging into history, our witches shift gears into the art of sex magick; one of the most potent, transformative, and (let’s be real) misunderstood forms of witchcraft. They break down the basics, from using pleasure as an energy-raising tool to casting spells with intention and desire. Whether you’re flying solo or weaving magic with a partner, Laylla and Chelle share tips on how to bring enchantment into your intimate rituals; safely, ethically, and with a whole lot of witchy confidence. From athames to chalices, wands to pentacles—witches love a good altar setup! But what do all these tools actually do, where do they come from, and do you really need them to practice witchcraft? In this episode, Laylla and Chelle break down the history, purpose, and modern use of altar tools in witchcraft, exploring both traditional ceremonial items and the everyday objects witches repurpose for magical work. They’ll talk about the origins of some of the most well-known altar tools, how they’ve evolved, and whether they’re still relevant for witches today. Do you need a fancy blade to cast a circle, or will a kitchen knife do? Can a coffee mug be a chalice? And what if you don’t use tools at all? For our 100th episode, we’re getting nostalgic and stirring up a little bit of chaos! This week, we’re blending the best of Back on the Broomstick with our old podcast The Stoned Witches Hour, bringing you stories of Tarot curses, cryptids, and dropping a bit of cannabis knowledge along the way. Laylla kicks things off with a tale about a tarot reader who threw a curse at a party girl during the summer of love in San Francisco. Chelle stays true to her paranormal-loving roots with a dive into an Ohio frog cryptid (because why wouldn’t there be a frog man haunting the Midwest?). And in true Stoned Witches fashion, we talk about what we’re smoking while Laylla answers Chelle’s cannabis questions, including what the heck THCA is and whether “bellacarphan” is a real thing or just another classic Chelle mispronunciation. To wrap up the episode, we’re giving you some witchy wisdom on how to tell if you or your home are cursed, and more importantly, what to do about it! Whether you’ve got a suspicious string of bad luck or just love a good magical defense strategy, we’ve got you covered! It’s been an incredible 100 episodes, witches! As the wheel turns to Imbolc, Laylla and Chelle dive into the Greek myth of Persephone and Demeter, exploring how it connects to the “Persephone Period” that begins on February 1st. Things get lively as the witches realize they have totally opposite interpretations of the myth and even different versions of the story! They unpack the layers of meaning in this tale of balance, transformation, and the cycles of life, while sharing their thoughts on how it ties to the energy of Imbolc. The myth of Persephone and Demeter is one of the most enduring stories from Greek mythology, a tale of transformation, duality, and the cycles of life and death. It’s what’s known as an etiological myth, one that explains the origins of natural phenomena, in this case, the changing seasons. As Persephone is taken to the Underworld and later returns, her journey mirrors the earth’s transition from barren winter to fertile spring. But as Laylla and Chelle get into the details of the story, they realize they don’t quite see eye to eye. Was Persephone a victim or a willing participant? Is the myth about power, balance, or something deeper? Their disagreement leads to a lively discussion full of insight, banter, and a few surprising takes on this ancient story about the dark Queen of the Underworld. Of course, no Imbolc episode would be complete without some witchy inspiration! Laylla and Chelle offer ideas for celebrating this sabbat, from candle magic and divination to rituals that honor Brigid and the return of the light. Whether you’re lighting the first spark of spring or reflecting on winter’s lessons, this episode has plenty of magic to share. In this festive and thought-provoking episode of Back on the Broomstick, Laylla and Chelle unwrap "The Good, the Bad, and a Yule Ghost Story" to bring a mix of holiday cheer, real-world reflections, and spooky seasonal vibes to your listening ears. First, the good! The witches are over the moon to share their delight at receiving heartfelt Yule cards from listeners at their new post office box. Your warm words and magical blessings have filled them with seasonal gratitude and the joy of connection. Then, the bad: they dive into two troubling stories of religious discrimination involving witches, sparking a candid discussion about the challenges faced by modern practitioners and the resilience of the magical community in the face of prejudice. Finally, we end with a hauntingly beautiful Yule ghost story straight from Massachusetts. A chilling Lady in White legend, who wanders the Winter Solstice night with an air of mystery and a connection to the season’s darker, quieter magic. So grab a warm drink, light the Yule log, and settle in as Laylla and Chelle take you through an episode filled with joy, justice, and just the right amount of ghostly wonder. Blessed Winter Solstice and happy Yule! The invocation from HP Amy Hardy-McAdams at the city council meeting: As a Priestess of the Goddess, I invoke the Gorgonaea, champions of equality and sacred rage. I call to Medusa, monstrous hero of the oppressed and abused. I open the Eye of Medusa, the stare that petrifies injustice. I call upon the serpent that rises from this land to face the Stars, the movement of wisdom unbound. May these leaders find within themselves the Embodied Divine, the sacred essence of the spark of the Universe and the breath of the Awen. Place in the hands of these leaders the sacred work of protecting the sovereignty and autonomy of all our people. Gorgon Goddess, make them ready and willing to be champions for all in this city, not just those in power. Shine a light for them, that they may walk the path of justice, protected and prepared, illuminating the darkness. Endow them with the fire of courage, the waters of compassion, the air of truth, and the strength of the earth itself. As Above, so below. As within, so without. As the universe, so the soul. Get ready to light some candles and clutch your crystals, because this week on Back on the Broomstick, Chelle and Laylla are sharing one of their most unforgettable—and unnerving—paranormal experiences; the time they recorded a Ouija board session in a notorious haunted house, an encounter so chilling it made Chelle swear off ever stepping foot in the place again. Our witchy hosts then take you on a journey through the fascinating history of spirit communication, tracing séances from Victorian parlors to modern-day living rooms. You’ll discover the surprising origins of the Ouija board, which began as a simple parlor game but evolved into one of the most feared and misunderstood tools in paranormal investigation. The episode tackles the age-old debate: are Ouija boards truly portals for demonic energy, or have they been unfairly demonized by pop culture? Chelle and Laylla weave together historical accounts, personal experiences, and spiritual insights. They’ll also share their own hard-earned tips for safe spirit communication (pro tip: maybe don’t start off with questions like “Is anyone evil here?”). Their discussion expands into more ghostly encounters from their personal vaults and the various ways spirits may attempt to connect with the living, sharing touching stories of how departed loved ones have sent signs to their families. Whether you’re a skeptic or a true believer, this episode is packed with eerie insights, nervous laughter, and magical advice that will have you looking over your shoulder—and maybe reaching for your own spirit board (with proper precautions, of course!). It's almost Samhain! The spooky season is the perfect time to cuddle up with a good witchy movie. Laylla and Chelle talk about some of our favorite Halloween classics to uncover the real magic behind the Hollywood spells. With blankets wrapped tight, hot tea in hand, and snacks aplenty, our witches have put in the *tough* work of rewatching beloved witchy flicks to answer the burning question: Is there real magic in these movies, or is Hollywood just spinning broomsticks for cash? And is there any truth to one of these movies being cursed by a real life witch? From the sisterhood of "Practical Magic" to the teenage angst in "The Craft," and the delightful camp of "Hocus Pocus," these films have become staples of the spooky season; but just how much of the spellwork is authentic? And hold on to your broomsticks because there's a new witch in town—Disney's "Agatha All Along." Is this modern addition to the witchy canon casting actual spells or just riding the wave of witchy trends? In this episode, Laylla and Chelle uncover some true witchcraft secrets hidden in their favorite spooky films. From creepy sounding code names for herbs to real-life witchy practices making an appearance on the big screen. You might be surprised to learn just how many genuine magical elements snuck their way into these films, and that even some of the dialogue contains actual spells! If you've ever wondered whether Hollywood's witches are stirring up more than just special effects, tune in as our real witches break down the enchantments, the truths, and the tricks behind these Halloween favorites. It's a cauldron of movie magic, myth, and a sprinkle of mayhem as we celebrate the witchiest time of the year! Expect some laughs, a few "ah-ha" moments, and possibly a strong urge to rewatch these classics with fresh eyes and a new appreciation for the witchcraft hidden beneath the cinematic spells! In this captivating episode of "Back on the Broomstick," hosts Laylla and Chelle delve deep into the enigmatic Rule of Three, sometimes called the Threefold Law or the Law of Returns. Have you ever been curious about the true essence of this witchy principle, its origins, and its role in contemporary witchcraft? The witches have it covered. They unravel the threads of the Rule of Three, a fundamental concept in the craft that suggests whatever energy a witch puts out into the world, be it good or bad, returns to them threefold. But where did this idea start? Is it an age-old wisdom or a modern invention? From its first mention in Gerald Gardner's writings to its widespread acceptance (and sometimes skepticism) in contemporary witchcraft, we trace the journey of this intriguing rule. And it's not just about history and concepts! Laylla reflects on the unexpected results of her hot foot spells, questioning if the Rule of Three is weaving its enigmatic influence. Meanwhile, Chelle shares her own spellbinding tales, including that time she hexed her exes - did the universe serve her a triple slice of cosmic justice? Together, we debate how applicable the Rule of Three is to the life of a modern witch. Is it a literal law, a useful guideline, or perhaps a bit of both? Does the universal "sky daddy" really keep score, or are we witches solely responsible for our magical actions and their repercussions? This episode offers a lively, insightful, and sometimes humorous look at one of witchcraft's most talked-about principles. Patti Wigington The Rule of Three Got a question? Once the cares of the world melt away, Chelle opens up about Scott Cunningham's "Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs", and why its a publication she deems essential for every herb witch's collection.
