We (slowly) approach the pointy end of the inaugural Australian Golf Passport Top 50 Australian Golf Course Rankings, with the intention of working from #25 all the way to #1. HOWEVA, things stretched on as they sometimes do, and we got to #12 before deciding to call an end to the day’s play. We work through a bracket of excellent Australian golf courses, looking at their strengths, weaknesses, evolutions and their character, sometimes recalling incidents from our own play over these holes, or the play of others. Next episode we will work all the way to #1, we promise! At least this long episode gives you a soundtrack during the big Christmas week stretches behind the steering wheel, or the lawnmower, or under the beach umbrella. An episode we’ve looked forward to recording for all of 2025. We unveil the back half of our inaugural Australian Golf Passport Top 50 Australian Golf Course Rankings. After having assembled a panel, and collating ballots we’ve had a genius crunch the numbers (s/o Dr Davis McCarthy!) in order to bring you what we feel is a statistically valid and reliable, objective snapshot of the nation’s best courses. We discuss the process, and run through the two groups of courses (presented alphabetically) in the 36-50 bracket and the 26-35 bracket. We talk about why things are structured the way they are and look forward to devoting the next discussion to the 25 courses which will be listed in numerical order at the pointy end of the list. This episode features a good chat about what goes through our minds when we critically assess a course and visit with the objective of placing a layout somewhere in the nation’s top 50. A quick catch-up for Scott and Matt after a week that saw the men's Australian Open reborn at Royal Melbourne. Rory, the course, the set-up, a superb supporting cast of players & a remarkable 72nd hole all came together to breathe life back into the tournament and show it the way forward. A mixed bag of interesting topics this week: Footage of the fully-grassed course at The Cliffs at Kangaroo Island emerged recently and warranted discussion. After an eventful week of golf twitter exchanges about tea tree and the sandbelt we have a timely interview to lead off this episode. Two of the heavyweights of world golf are the stars for this episode – Royal Melbourne West and Tara Iti. Scott recently returned from a quick hit and run trip to Tara Iti and played both courses at Te Arai as well. The rounds at Tara Iti had him thinking it might even surpass the famed West course at RM as the Southern Hemisphere’s best. We discuss the genesis of the course at Mangawhai – including the seminal GolfClubAtlas thread in which Tom Doak put out a call for people to nominate sites on which his client could develop one of the best courses in the world – turns out it was even earlier than we though it was. 2005, and long time GCA contributor Ash Towe was the one who steered the ship towards the East coast of New Zealand, north of Auckland. https://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,19775.msg351600.html#msg351600 The site, the routing, and so much more of Tara Iti is discussed. The week before last afforded the chance for Scott, Matt and Dean from Seed to share a game on a sunny and breezy Saturday afternoon at Royal Queensland. Before and after the game several RQ members proudly hosted a tour of the land east of the Gateway Bridge, describing the imminent development of new holes, and plans for refinement of the existing course. We could have taken the easy way out and made this two episodes to chip away at our goal of 26 for the year, but instead here's two and a half hours of listening spanning four topics. We open with a chat about sanity prevailing at Sandringham with the men's and women's Aussie Opens to be contested separately again from 2025 after a failed three-year experiment co-sanctioning the two. Where to for both tournaments after so much damage was done to their standing? Hot on the heels of the release of a plan by the Save Moore Park Golf Course alliance to keep the course at 18 holes, we chat with the driving force behind that alliance, Jared Kendler. Jared talks us through the issues and the plan that the golf community is hoping will be embraced by the NSW Government, which owns the site. His group has proposed a sophisticated, thorough, sensible and economically sustainable proposal to manage the issue of recreational space and the existing golf course in central Sydney. A snippet of 1998 Australian Open winner Greg Chalmers was featured within our previous episode – a focus on Royal Adelaide. The New South Wales Premier Chris Minns yesterday announced that the busy and popular public golf course at Moore Park will be carved up to create more free-form parkland, at the expense of golf holes. It seems like golf is paying the price on the back end of unfettered urban development on the edge of Centennial Park and Moore Park. As the population of Zetland and surrounding streets rises, the absence of sufficient green space allowance within that development footprint is becoming more obvious. High density residential development during the tenure of Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore and previous NSW premier Bob Carr now sees current day politicians reach into the golf course to ameliorate the absence of green space allowance within the suburban development footprint. Mike Clayton joins us to discuss the issue, and how similar themes are playing out in other states of Australia. Mike and Scott propose several possible outcomes for the golf course. One of Australia’s finest layout, and one that is often over-looked by locals and overseas visitors alike. We’ve been looking forward to covering East, and hope that you enjoy the discussion. This episode kicks off with a brief summary of the experience at the Marvel Stadium Golf event in Melbourne, and the imminent opening of the underground carpark at Royal Melbourne are briefly discussed before launching into the main fare. Matt provides a little detail on the origins of the East course, and the work of Alex Russell both on completing the West, and designing and building the East. Two great images that flesh out the origins of the course, and provide an example of the early form of one or two holes in particular. The nature of the land on which the course sits is discussed, and how that influences the design of the course, providing a layout of contrasting character to the West next door. There’s an 18 hole match play exercise that Scott conducts where East and West face off. Other issues including the potential for an East hole to be the best par three on the entire complex. With a flurry of activity on the local golf scene, and one great question accidentally omitted from the recent mailbag episode, we call an emergency pod, and spend longer than we thought we would discussing the events of the week. First up is the topic that has been running hot on the local rumor mill - the alleged misappropriation of funds and assets from a prominent Victorian golf club. Scott reached out to Victoria Police and the Australian PGA, and legal issues permitting, we share what we are able on this front. The impending tweaks to three of the back nine holes on Port Fairy are discussed, pursuant to a recent Victorian state government finding regarding the Club’s boundary. The National’s insta poll on their ‘Dream 18’ is fodder for Scott, who comes in off the long run over the selection of Old’s 3rd hole above those from Gunnamatta and Moonah. This leads into a broader discussion of Old and the other selections on the fantasy layout. One of Sydney’s finest courses and clubs has the spotlight for this edition of the pod, but there’s plenty of additional discussion in a spritely, slightly shorter session than usual. The bulk of the episode is devoted to The Lakes, one of the finest layouts in Sydney. A real treat for this episode of the podcast – a chat with famed Australian golf course architect Bob Harrison. His design portfolio spans decades, and includes many of Australia’s most significant courses. He has also worked on several notable projects overseas, in Asia, the US, and the UK. We talk with Bob about his early years in golf, his time at university, ambidextrous golf and golfers, Bob’s engineering pedigree and the undergraduate project that saw him move into the field of golf architecture. A wide-ranging discussion addresses the character of the course, the seaside location, and the topography on which Newcastle sits. Hot off a stellar hit and run mission to Victoria where Scott played 72 holes in a two day visit, we devote this episode to Lonsdale Links. Spoken of very positively in our previous episode with Todd and Joe from the USA, this reworked seaside layout has quickly established a reputation as a must-see course on the Bellarine peninsula, owing to its memorable, fun, quirky yet manageable layout. The first few minutes of the episode are devoted to the upcoming pro tournament at The National’s Moonah Course, and some potential design work on the Sunshine Coast. Scott’s trip to Melbourne is covered, and we touch on Royal Melbourne’s two courses, 13th Beach and Curlewis, before moving onto Lonsdale Links. The course is discussed in detail, along with the concept of template holes, and their origins with CB Macdonald more than a century ago. This seemed like as good a time as any to hit a wide range of little topics that have been on the agenda over the last few months. This latest episode also gave the chance to discuss a host of newer, smaller news items on the local golf scene too. After some chat about a hole in one for Matt, the focus shifts to the new short course at Kingston Heath. The nine hole par three layout is starting to get a small amount of play prior to an official opening. Initial impressions are extremely positive, which should parlay into all club members and guests enjoying a fun additional facility. OCM have done a great job with a narrow flat parcel of land. Meanwhile, on the other side of the continent, their work at Mt Lawley GC is discussed briefly. Scott then discusses the recent member information session presented at New South Wales GC by newly engaged consultant architects Mackenzie and Ebert. A recent site visit at The National by Tom Doak, Brian Scheider and Clyde Johnson has seen fast action to remedy a safety issue involving the 18th tee on the Gunnamatta course. The fiercely private and highly ranked course is a veritable white whale for local golfers and many who venture to Australia for a once in a lifetime golf trip. The course forms a tiny part of what is a sizeable station at Ellerston, sitting within a glorious parcel of Australian country in the Upper Hunter Valley. The property is several hours drive north of Sydney, with a National Park nearby and Pages Creek meandering through the station and the golf course itself. From the origins of the layout and the difficulty of the course, to the standout holes, grasses, terrain, and scarcity of invitations to play. All of it is covered. Few will ever get to play Ellerston, and those who are lucky enough to visit no doubt have memories to last a lifetime. The experience of visiting the property is a one of a kind, as was Kerry Packer - the Australian billionaire, media colossus and owner of the Ellerston estate. A larger than life figure who enjoys legendary status in Australia, his course is one of a kind, and in several ways a reflection of Kerry Packer himself. Unashamedly tough, with a dramatic flare here and there, and possessing a distinctive Australian charm. The course designed by Bob Harrison and Greg Norman is dramatic, and as one would expect, immaculately conditioned. It is unique in Australian golf, as we hope our discussion shows. A somewhat unheralded course in Sydney gets the spotlight this episode. A darling of our hosts, Bonnie Doon is the result of years of toil by respected Australian golf architects. This episode delves into why Scott & Matt feel Bonnie Doon is so good, and why it warrants a visit from those who have time for more than 18 holes in Sydney. The multi-phase, multi-year redevelopment of the course is addressed, as is the surprisingly small size of the parcel on which Bonnie Doon (and other suburban Sydney golf courses) sit. The importance of firm conditioning and the interplay between mowing lines and green construction is discussed, leading both guys into focusing on their favourite holes across the layout. Special mention to the run of holes in the middle of the back nine! On the eve of the 2022 Australian Open, co-hosted by Victoria, we focus on this storied course and Club with two of their finest members. Lillie has played golf at Victoria for almost two decades, and shares her experiences on the course and Club as well as her perspective on the game. Matt is an Order of Merit winner and multiple tournament winner on both the PGA Tour of Australasia and the OneAsia Tour. One of the nation’s golfing treasures is the focus for this episode. Kingston Heath is sharing host duties of the 2022 Australian Open with Victoria GC, which we will feature in Episode 10.
