Welcome back to ARTMATTERS: The Podcast for Artists Today's guest is Brooklyn artist, Nat Meade. Together we discuss Nat's practice and technique in depth. His painting surface, medium, composition and scale; his small studies, drawings and casein sketches. Later in the episode, Nat and I talk about before and after he came a full-time artist, his early career and what it means to find the confidence to paint for yourself and making your weakness your thing. We finish up talking trends, social media, and curating. About Nat Meade: Meade's work explores the complex experience of moving through the phases of one’s life. The figures in his paintings become stand-ins for himself as he investigates the experience of becoming an adult, a husband, and a parent, each character viewed through the dual lens of self-scrutiny and societal expectation. Meade received his BFA from the University of Oregon and his MFA from Pratt Institute. His work has shown in numerous group and solo exhibitions nationally and internationally, and has been reviewed in publications such as Artforum , Juxtapoz , The Boston Globe , and Hyperallergic . He attended the Skowhegan School for Painting and Sculpture 2009, the Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program in 2016, the Siena Art Institute in 2018, and the James Castle House Summer Residency in Boise, Idaho in summer 2021.
