Rappin' With ReefBum is a LIVE talk show with host Keith Berkelhamer and guests from the reef keeping community. In this episode I chat with Dong Zou from AcroGarden. Dong has a PhD in chemistry and worked for several pharmaceutical companies in various therapeutic areas including anti-inflammatory, cancer, pain management and anti-infectious diseases. He developed his first interest in marine invertebrates when he was working as a post doc at the University of Virginia. He has been in aquarium hobby since he was in college and he got into the saltwater hobby in 2004 after setting up his first marine fish tank for a Nemo and after he discovered the Boston Reefers Society. About 10 years ago, he cofounded his first company on drug discovery. Soon after that, he was able to combine his passion for coral and his experience in the pharmaceutical industry and cofounded a new company, eCove BioMarine. This company focused on aquaculture coral for drug discovery and bone grafting. His current company, AcroGarden Inc, was then founded to hold the intellectual properties and to study coral farming. AcroGarden is now his primary focus. The company produces aqua-cultured coral, mainly SPS, for the hobby.

Jeff has been involved with coral reef conservation, marine aquariums and ornamental aquaculture for a lifetime. Some accomplishments include being a member of the Florida Marine Aquarium Society since 1962 and President/Owner of Exotic Aquaria, Inc. from 1980 through 1998, which is when he merged his company with Oceans, Reefs, and Aquariums, Inc. or ORA. He designed, built, installed, and provided all aquacultured corals and marine fish for the Indo Pacific Coral Reef Aquarium located in the Sant Ocean Hall for the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in 2008. He has been the Florida Marine Life Association Vice President since 1995 and has been the current President since 2013. He is also a board member for the Rising Tide Conservation, Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary SAC Committee Member for Marine Life and a Non-Native Fish and Wildlife Technical Assistance Group Member for Marine Life. Additionally, he is the Owner/President/CEO of Reef Aquaria Design, Inc., Boyd Enterprises and Jellyfish Art, LLC.

Tony is an author, lecturer, consultant and an admitted reefaholic. He started his aquatic adventures at the age of seven with Guppies in a pickle jar. In the early eighties he assembled his first salt water aquarium (fish only). Moving on to more challenging waters, in the mid 1980's he experimented with marine invertebrates and corals. In the late eighties a handful of aquarist including Tony were among the first in the United States to successfully maintain Acropora alive in captivity. Tony began to share his experiences with others through the many articles he wrote in a column titled "Feature Coral" for FAMA magazine. One of the Acropora articles in FAMA was acknowledge in Carden Wallace's text book on Acropora titled Staghorn Corals of the World. Today Tony SCUBA dives around the world taking underwater photos and observing reef creatures in their natural environment. In addition to writing about his experiences and observations, Tony travels to give lectures and consultations on coral and reef fish husbandry, and aquarium system design. He now manages an aquarium shop in Qatar.

In 1979, Leng, who is of Chinese descent, fled Vietnam with his family, through Cambodia, to a refugee camp in Thailand to pursue freedom and find opportunity. In early May, 1981, Leng and his family arrived in the United States, speaking broken English and with not a penny to their name! Thanks to the kindness and support of the people of Cambridge, Wisconsin, the U.S. government, and his uncle Lim (who was once in the Cambodian navy) and his family, Leng and his family were able to pick themselves up and start new lives in this wonderful new country. In the summer of 1989, Leng graduated from UCLA with a degree in mathematics and a minor in pre-med. Although he had been interested in keeping fish since he was a child, it was in 1987 that Leng was introduced to the hobby by his older brother and then later by his classmate, Claude Nanjo. It was the first time he had ever seen marine tropical fish! Currently, Leng is the President/CEO of EcoSystem Aquarium

Jim is retired Air Force, formerly assigned to the KC-135 aerial refueller, the B-2 Stealth Bomber, and the YAL-1A Airborn Laser. Todd is a professor of Aquaculture at Carteret Community College in Morehead City, NC, and an Aquaculture Specialist for Biota Inc. which specializes in sustainably cultured marine fishes and invertebrates for aquariums. His life and his career have been shaped by his passion for marine life and he has written numerous scientific and popular articles about his research and experiences collecting, keeping, and culturing marine organisms. Todd’s professional background includes work on a National Geographic documentary, commercial fish farming at C-quest Hatchery in Puerto Rico, and an 11-year term at the Long Island Aquarium where he spent much of his time developing techniques for raising difficult marine fish larvae. To date he has raised more than 50 species. In 2013 Todd received the prestigious Aquarist of the Year Award from the Marine Aquarium Society of North America (MASNA). In his spare time, Todd dives, photographs marine life, runs marathons, and plays the guitar.

In this episode I chat with Dr. Eli Meyer from AquaBiomics and Dr. Andrew Bouwma, a science educator and hobbyist. Eli is a coral biologist and aquarium hobbyist and he owns AquaBiomics. AquaBiomics can analyze the microbiome of an aquarium using DNA sequencing. So they can diagnose issues & identify strategies for promoting a healthy microbiome. Andy has a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has published research on tropical ecology and science education. For the last 16 years, Andy has focused on teaching a variety of university courses in biology and conservation. Andy has kept aquariums for his whole life but started focusing on saltwater about 12 years ago. Andy currently maintains several systems with a focus on Acropora and Goniopora. Andy is also a power user of the Aquabiomics service and has a lot of data on his tanks.

Salem is in his senior year pursuing a degree in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology with a minor in Chemistry. He is researching coral pathogens, zooxanthella, and holobiont-associated signal transduction pathways. He wants to pursue a doctorate and would like to go into conservation work eventually.

Julian has published other books and written numerous articles about the hobby. He co-founded his company, Two Little Fishies, with Daniel Ramirez back in 1991. Julian is also a frequent speaker at aquarium conferences and club events. Besides being an author and lecturer, Charles is currently the Curator of Aquarium Projects at Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco, California. Prior to that we worked at the Waikiki Aquarium with Dr. Bruce Carlson. Charles was also one of the driving forces behind organizing the first ever MACNA in 1989, which was held in Toronto where he lived.

In addition, Bobby has worked in retail, maintenance and most recently owned & operated "HumbleFish Aquatics" which sold quarantined, conditioned saltwater fish. Around 16 years ago Bobby decided to devote himself to the fish disease & treatment aspect of our hobby, and this is considered his area of expertise. He also owns & operates Humble.Fish & Reef Community, an aquarium forum which is dedicated to helping fellow hobbyists.

Dong has a PhD in chemistry and worked for several pharmaceutical companies in various therapeutic areas including anti-inflammatory, cancer, pain management and anti-infectious diseases. He developed his first interest in marine invertebrates when he was working as a post doc at the University of Virginia. He has been in aquarium hobby since he was in college and he got into the saltwater hobby in 2004 after setting up his first marine fish tank for a Nemo and after he discovered the Boston Reefers Society. About 10 years ago, he cofounded his first company on drug discovery. Soon after that, he was able to combine his passion for coral and his experience in the pharmaceutical industry and cofounded a new company, eCove BioMarine. This company focused on aquaculture coral for drug discovery and bone grafting. His current company, AcroGarden Inc, was then founded to hold the intellectual properties and to study coral farming. AcroGarden is now his primary focus. The company produces aqua-cultured coral, mainly SPS, for the hobby.

He completed a 3 year apprenticeship with Michael Hagedorn after graduating from Yale University. Andrew is the President of the Bonsai Society of Portland, the largest bonsai club in North America. He regularly exhibits work at the Portland Japanese Garden, and lectures at the garden monthly. Andrew is a host of the Bonsai Wire Podcast, and regularly creates new episodes with the other hosts and prominent figures in the bonsai community. Andrew resides at his recently constructed garden RAKUYO-en with his golden retriever Bailey, where he teaches and shares the art of deciduous bonsai.

He moved on to a saltwater fish only tank when he was 22.He started to volunteer at the Waikiki Aquarium in 1995, working for Charles Delbeek maintaining both saltwater and fresh water systems, later working also for Dr. Bruce Carlson helping to maintain the coral farm at the Aquarium.He also volunteered as a mentor for the Marine Option Program at the University of Hawaii in 2003 and he worked for one of the best companies in Honolulu, Wayne’s Ocean World, Inc, that received, maintained and exported marine tropical fishes around the globe. He has also written articles for various magazines and books published in Brazil, Portugal, Italy, USA and UK. In this episode I chat with Tony Vargas.Tony is an author, lecturer, consultant and an admitted reefaholic.He started his aquatic adventures at the age of seven with Guppies in a pickle jar. In the early eighties he assembled his first salt water aquarium (fish only). Moving on to more challenging waters, in the mid 1980's he experimented with marine invertebrates and corals. In the late eighties a handful of aquarist including Tony were among the first in the United States to successfully maintain Acropora alive in captivity. Tony began to share his experiences with others through the many articles he wrote in a column titled "Feature Coral" for FAMA magazine. One of the Acropora articles in FAMA was acknowledge in Carden Wallace's text book on Acropora titled Staghorn Corals of the World.Today Tony SCUBA dives around the world taking underwater photos and observing reef creatures in their natural environment. In addition to writing about his experiences and observations, Tony travels to give lectures and consultations on coral and reef fish husbandry, and aquarium system design.

His systems have always favored carbon dosing and the leveraging of bacteria for coral growth. He started experimenting with carbon dosing back in 2004 and around 2007 he helped it gain some traction in the hobby. He was also featured in CORAL Magazine at the time as well as many other online and physical publications due to his success with carbon dosing. The systems he has setup have been featured as TOTM on all of the big sites (ReefCentral, Reef2Reef, etc). For a time, he had a coral company up and running, Pro Corals, which released some classic corals such as the PC Rainbow. You may also recall seeing Sunny’s very well-known rimless reef tank. Paul, who is 73 years old, has been keeping fish since he was able to speak. His dad had a sea food market so he was around fish all his life….it's in his blood. At 18 he was drafted and spent a year in the jungles of Vietnam and Cambodia as a Sargent where he was awarded two Bronze Stars for Valor. As soon as he returned in 1971, he started up his current reef tank. The glass has been changed three times due to scratches. He has two aquarium related patents and he wrote a book "The Avant-Garde Marine Aquarist". 100% of the profits go to MS research in his wife's name. Paul has been an avid diver since 1971…he has his own boat and equipment. Paul was a construction Electrician in Manhattan for about 48 years.

His goal is to give sustainable livelihoods to folks in coastal communities by educating them on how to collect live ornamental tropical fish in an environmentally safe way through the proper use of monofilament nets. His company, RVS Fishworld, conducts net training programs in most regions of the Philippines and Papua New Guinea. Through RVS 4 Star Restoration, they are working to restore degraded reefs throughout the Philippines. RVS Fishworld has brought numerous new species to hobbyists and has expanded the known range of several species through their collection efforts. Barnett was honored when one of the fish they discovered, the exceedingly beautiful magma wrasse, was described as Cirrhilabrus shutmani, after his family name. Barnett also owns Indo Pacific Direct in NY, which imports his fish.

He received the MASNA graduate student fellowship award at MACNA 2017 and was a speaker at the 2019 MACNA.

Greg has been active in the reefkeeping hobby since 1996. He has raised several species of marine fish and propagated dozens of species of soft and hard corals. Greg is a founding member of the Boston Reefer's Society (BRS) and is a frequent monthly meeting speaker, helping to educate and contribute to the success of many Boston area hobbyists. Greg holds a Ph.D. in chemical/biochemical engineering from U.C. Berkeley which he believes has contributed to his success in the reefkeeping hobby. Greg has authored a number of articles for online hobbyist publications, most dealing with chemistry aspects of the hobby. He currently works for a major biotechnology company in the bioreactor process development group. Greg focuses on the scientific and bio-engineering part of the hobby.

Tim’s groundbreaking research on nitrifying bacteria led to him discovering and developing BioSpira. Dr. Hovanec has authored numerous scientific papers in aquatic microbial ecology and in public aquaria and aquaculture fields, and he writes popular articles on tropical fish for several magazines. He has been an invited speaker and contributing author at several domestic and international conferences. He was the editor of SeaScope magazine and is a member of many scientific organizations.

John keeps about 2500 gallons of saltwater aquariums, most being reefs. In addition to publishing articles and speaking at conferences, including three past MACNAs, John has spoken to reef clubs in over twenty states. His systems have been featured in publications in Asia, Europe, and the United States. These include the book “The Coral Reef Aquarium” by Tony Vargas. John is also one of just two people to have received the prestigious Reef Central Tank of the Month for two different systems (September ’04 and January ’11). In the summer of 2013 John started building his largest system yet, a 1300 gallon SPS display, a 240 gallon anemone display and two six foot frag tanks that are installed in the “forever home” he and his wife built. John also has had a number of SPS corals named after him.
