Steve Flink comes back to chat with Vansh about the absolute madness that was the 2025 edition of Roland Garros, the French Open. Crazy things happened, including singles finals between World nos 1 and 2 in both WTA and ATP sides, a massive victory for Coco Gauff over Aryna Sabalenka, who herself dethroned three-time defending champ Iga Swiatek, the deceptively good results from 38-year-old Novak Djokovic, and what was possibly the best Grand Slam final we've seen in the men's side since 2012 Austrlian Open between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner - and a final without any of the Big 3 or 4. Still processing the tournamet? We are too. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/tennis-and-bagels . Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

A Grand Slam can tell us many things. And the Australian Open results still mean a lot - if not more than the other three majors when it comes to clues to how the season will pan out. Owen and Andre talk about all the players that made their mark at the Australian Open, what they expect from these athletes, and what they believe needs to change. They also mention other players who seem to be stagnant, or even regressing, and, should nothing change for them, will fall out of the lime light and slip down the rankings. Oh, and also just how boring the men's tournament ended up being, in contrast especially with the dramatic and intense ending of the women's. What were the key moments of the Australian Open 2025? Who were the players that truly made their mark, on top of the obvious champions Madison Keys and Jannik Sinner? Does Djokovic need to play more matches? Is Aryna Sabalenka still the player to beat, and even more improved than in previous seasons? What will happen to Elena Rybakina? What does Carlos Alcaraz need to do to challenge Sinner for the No.1 Spot? Steve Flink, renowned tennis writer and hall-of-famer gives his time in a deep conversation with Vansh to look for answers to all these questions and more in our post-Grand Slam review! Andre here! Giving my thoughts on the Australian Open 2025 and what I thought was most noteworthy, like: Madison Keys winning her first Grand Slam and whether this will impact the rest of the season (US Open title coming?) Aryna Sabalenka's upset, and how she will bounce back to assert her dominance on hard courts and as World No.1 Iga Swiatek's quest to become a bigger factor on hard courts to be on equal footing with Sabalenka and other hard hitters. Coco Gauff and whether she is getting too comfortable winning matches from behind. Also some ATP notes: Jannik Sinner is No.1 and there's not much else to say about it Novak Djokovic is getting old, but he's the GOAT for a reason. Carlos Alcaraz: how to win when matches are boring? And he is the true second best player in the world, and will only get better. Daniil Medvedev's window is all but closed. Unless something major changes, he will start slipping in the rankings and will not be a factor in big tournaments anymore (sadly) Alexander Zverev is never going to win a Grand Slam, and is only winning because of luck. That's it! Got opinions about my opinions? Reach out on social media! 2024 was a year of new beginnings, and bittersweet ends. Andre, Vansh, and Owen discuss the careers of several incredible players who announced their retirement this year, reminiscing of fantastic matches they played, their game styles, and what value they brought to the tennis world. Rafael Nadal, the eternal Clay GOAT, but so much more. Garbiñe Muguruza, who did all that a tennis player could dream of, and leaves tennis enjoying full health and a well deserved rest. Angelique Kerber, an unorthodox player who probably overachieved, and will forever be one of the greatest defenders tennis has ever seen. Andy Murray, the only one who could possibly challenge the Big 3 consistently, and carved a space where he alone stands in history. Dominic Thiem, who had his career stolen by injuries, but reach such heights that will leave fans in awe of his on-court aggressive mindset forever. And dang, what the heck, Andy Murray is already back on the Tour coaching Novak Djokovic. What? Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/tennis-and-bagels . Hosted on Acast. The ATP Tour 2024 Season was defined in good and concerning ways by Jannik Sinner, the undisputed World No.1. The doping case still looms, but the Italian make the most of his opportunities to finish the year as the World No.1 and take home two Grand Slams, tied with his main rival, Carlos Alcaraz. Join Vansh and hall of famer Steve Flink in a back-and-forth conversation about the top players in the world, who's risen to the occasion in 2024, who might struggle and who might dominate in 2025! Lastly, stay for conversations on what Novak Djokovic still has in store (now with Andy Murray as his coach) and a look back on Rafael Nadal's legendary career, on clay and the other surfaces. At just 21 years old, Carlos Alcaraz adds a fourth Grand Slam title to his name, and a second Wimbledon no less. Though taking on a diminished, post-knee-surgery Novak Djokovic, Alcaraz still proved why he is at the top of the game, and even though Djokovic had enough in him to reach his first final of the year after a major scare at the French Open, it would take nothing but his best to beat the Spaniard. Vansh sits down with his traditional post major chat with Hall of Famer Steve Flink to recap all things Roland Garros. They discuss Carlos Alcaraz’s incredible achievement of winning a major on all surfaces at the age of 21 and dissect the 2 sets to 1 comebacks against Sinner and Zverev in the semifinals and finals. Other topics include a discussion on will Zverev ever win a major, Djokovic’s uncertain future and his escapes against Musetti and Cerundolo, Jannik Sinner’s tournament and his rivalry with Alcaraz, and thoughts on Rafael Nadal at the Olympics. They also discuss Iga Swiatek and where her 5th major title triumph puts her in tennis history, an analysis of the Osaka-Swiatek R2 epic, thoughts on Coco Gauff, and a look ahead to the grass season for the WTA. A plethora of topics jam packed into a great tennis discussion that you don’t want to miss. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/tennis-and-bagels . Hosted on Acast. The Madrid Open is known for being the clay court tournament where big hitters and big servers get a chance to beat the best clay court players. And it seems like Aryna Sabalenka was right on that path, beating Iga Swiatek in the 2023 final and clawing her way into the 2024 final again vs the World No.1 - but this time, the Pole had an answer. The epic women's tournament in Madrid held the entire thing together, to be honest. The men's side was hampered with many withdrawals and injuries, including champion Andrey Rublev's illness which almost cost him the title. In what was probably the match of the year (with still a good number of great tournaments to come) Iga Swiatek was able to overcome the powerful Sabalenka, the reigning Australian Open champion and two-time defending champion in Madrid. Swiatek did not have it easy, though: three match points came and were erased by a clutch Siwatek before she finally was able to cross the finish line after three hours, 20 minutes of pure drama and tennis of the most exquisite quality. Now, Swiatek has completed her clay court set, winning the only big clay tournament that was left for her, having won Rome two times and Roland Garros three times. For the men's while things looked a little less exciting (and downright worrying) due to injuries and withdrawals, we still got to experience some good stories, matches and drama. Firstly, Rafael Nadal, who is likely in his farewell tour, reached the fourth round with majestic wins over Aelx De Minaur and Pedro Cachin before succumbing to a flawless Jiri Lehecka. Is there still something special in the King of Clay for 2024? Secondly, while Alcaraz was clearly hindered by some injury in his arm he still gave everything he had, beating Jan Lennard Struff in a rematch of last year's final, and pushing Rublev to three sets. maybe the effort was too much though, as he is not playing in Rome, and is still a question mark for Roland Garros. Finally, we cannot forget the heroics of Andrey Rublev, who overcame many an adversity to win his second ATP Masters 1000 title, arguably the greatest of all coming in the final match: a quite debilitating illness, and a healthy and fresh Felix Auger Aliassime, who himself enjoyed a particularly odd way to the final with two mid-match retirements and a withdrawal (Jannik Sinner, no less). While no match of the year, at least the fans were entertained by a good fight in a 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 win from Rublev. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/tennis-and-bagels . Hosted on Acast. This week, Vansh and Andre have a chat about their thoughts on the current clay season progress. Notably, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Casper Ruud have reached the Monte Carlo and Barcelona finals back to back, with the Greek winning Monte Carlo and the Norwegian taking the Barcelona crown for his biggest title to date. On the women's side, Elena Rybakina fought hard to win the Stuttgart indoor clay title, with a win over two-time defending champion Iga Swiatek in what was possibly the best match of the week. With Carlos Alcaraz's withdrawals due to injury, Novak Djokovic's current lack of proper form (and a title in 2024,) ths ATP side of things is looking rather intriguing ahead of Madrid, and, most of all, Rome, as it is the closest in conditions to Roland Garros. Who will emerge as the top contender? Can Rafael Nadal find yet another title on the Parisian clay? And though Iga Swiatek lost, it's still the same: Rome will define who is truly in the best form for the French Open - although so far we feel pretty confident in the 3-time Roland Garros champion to win the title. That is, if one of Elena Rybakina, Aryna Sabalenka, and Coco Gauff don't step up to dethrone the World Number 1, or even a rising star in potentially Marta Kostyuk and a finally stable Emma Raducanu. We also have a quick look back into the achievements and career of Garbine Muguruza, who just announced her retirement from professional tennis in a press conference this past week. Happy retirement! A bit of tennis fatigue and other personal stuff had us MIA for a while. But we're back, and just in time for the Clay Season! Looking back at the Sunshine Double results, including the Iga Swiatek - Carlos Alcaraz double, Maria Sakkari's and Daniil Medvedev's great runs to the finals in Indian Wells, and of course, the players of the moment and Miami champions: Danielle Collins and Jannik Sinner. Naomi Osaka reached the quarterfinals at the Qatar WTA 1000 event, winning her first match over a top 30 opponent in Caroline Garcia, also avenging the Australian Open loss. She also won back-to-back matches for the first time since Miami 2022. While her tennis truly has seen great improvement from Brisbane, and the rust is starting to fall off, what really is great to see in Osaka right now is that she seems to be enjoying the game - a great contrast from when she was suffering with depression back in 2021 and 2022. Then, she wanted to be anywhere but in front of a crowd and on a court. Now, she seems to truly be enjoying it. But can Naomi Osaka win a big title in 2024? Can she break into the Top 30? Who knows. What truly matters, though, is that she continues to enjoy her time on court. Then, the sky is the limit. Netflix's Break Point cost millions, took months to be completed, several of the most talented people in the industry, and still can't hold a candle to the ATP Season, a comedic 5-minute parody of what the tennis season is like. Players pretending that everything we see is fake, and some of the best acting from your favourite players like Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, and Gael Monfils. What is missing to the multi-million dollar production by the entertainment giant? What did Netflix miss? For starters, we think that they should get rid of the F1: Drive to Survive thinking and find their own mission statement. We also talk about the most controversial coach in modern tennis, Patrick Mouratoglou. Who is he really? A great coach? A PR genius with a way to make people talk about himself? A... clown? We don't quite believe in this last option, but the true merits of Mouratoglou as an elite tennis coach are a good topic to be explored - one that might bring about an entire episode of its own. Touching briefly on some of the WTA matches this week, Andre recommended the Abu Dhabi semifinals, but obviously these are over by now. So if you can, go watch a replay of Rybakina vs Samsonova and Haddad Maia vs Kasatkina! Both of these were amazing. And don't forget to catch the final on Sunday! Finally, we ended up having to chat about Saudi Arabia's involvement in tennis. What to expect? What to do as fans? How can we still enjoy good tennis, and at the same time keep in mind that Saudi Arabia is far from being a role-model of a country, being a quite brutal dictatorship with many shortcomings when it comes to human rights? Ultimately, though, money talks for the big players. Join us in this captivating episode as tennis historian, writer, and hall-of-famer Steve Flink returns to dissect the thrilling moments of the Australian Open men's tournament. In an insightful conversation with our host Vansh, they delve into the triumphs and tribulations of the players who left their mark on the iconic tournament. The spotlight is on the phenomenal ascent of Italian sensation Jannik Sinner, who emerged victorious in a historic showdown against the formidable Novak Djokovic. The 10-time Australian Open champion faced his first-ever defeat in the semi-finals, leaving fans in awe of Sinner's prowess and determination as he valiantly came back from a two-sets-to-love deficit against Daniil Medvedev to win his maiden Grand Slam title. Djokovic's shocking performance also left Flink and Vansh intrigued, wondering if this will affect the rest of the season for the Serbian. Flink and Vansh navigate the twists and turns of Daniil Medvedev's journey, exploring his resurgence and reaching the final for the third time in Australia. The duo revisits Medvedev's past challenges, including a heartbreaking loss to Rafael Nadal at this same stage in 2022, and examines the improvements that have transformed him into a more promising and formidable player. From adjustments in his net game to strategic shifts in his return position, could Medvedev's evolution bring him back to being one of the most dangerous players on tour? As the episode unfolds, the hosts speculate on the future prospects of Sinner and Medvedev, pondering whether they will secure victories in the remaining Grand Slam events of 2024. The burning question lingers: Can either of them rise to the pinnacle and claim the coveted World No. 1 ranking? Tune in for a riveting discussion filled with expert analysis, tennis insights, and a glimpse into the potential future of these tennis titans. A deeper dive into the happenings of the first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open, as it came to an end this Sunday, January 28! Owen makes a case for Aryna Sabalenka to be the true best player in the world. What are her weaknesses? If not for her own on-court frustrations and nerves kicking in, there are no real vulnerabilities to exploit in her game, no matter on which surface. The WTA's current Top 3 plus Elena Rybakina also seems consolidated and increasingly distancing themselves from the rest of the pack. Is a new domination era starting? How many Grand Slam titles will Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, and Elena Rybakina win in the next 5-10 years? Exciting battles look very possible on the horizon. And we did not forget Qinwen Zheng, who finished runner-up at the Australian Open. How far does her potential go? Which areas can she improve on her game? After a hard fought final, though ending in a straight forward loss, Zheng now enters the Top 10, and has much material to look into as she seeks to follow on the footsteps of fellow Chinese player Li Na, the 2014 Australian Open champion. On the ATP side, more questions than answers. How high is Janni Sinner's ceiling? Is the World No.1 ranking in the cards for this year? Another major title? And what about Medvedev - now that he is happy and motivated, can he finally add another Grand Slam title to his trophy room? It will depend on how well he can implement the changes he needs in his game, and how long he can sustain his best level, though another 2-0 lead is blown at the Australian Open. Looking into Novak Djokovic, we were left puzzled by his performance. Although, while we do not consider his decline to be so sudden as to cause his level to drop so much in just two days, it seems something was not quite right. And he sure needed a much higher level to beat Sinner. Andre takes a quick look into Aryna Sabalenka's dominant performance in the Australian Open final, defeating China's Qinwen Zheng 6-3 6-2. Though Zheng showed flashes of brilliance, it wasn't to be for the Chinese rising star's first Grand Slam final, as she went up against a decisive, confident, and powerful Sabalenka, who looks well and truly like a player who wants to be the World No.1 again. Plus: Rohan Boppana's inspiring ascent to the World No. 1 ranking for the first time in his career at 43 years old, also winning his first men's doubles major title, teaming up with Australia's Matthew Ebden! And a major run by Netherlands para-athlete Diede de Groot, who is now on a 14-title winning streak in Grand Slams, with three calendar Grand Slams won during the run - and a strong possibility of a fourth one on the way! 🎾🥯 Game, Set, Podcast! 🥯🎾 We're back in 2024 for more great tennis adventures, starting at the place Andre and Owen long to go back to: Australia! 🌟 Iga Swiatek's Epic Showdown: The illustrious World No.1, Iga Swiatek, encountered a formidable challenge in the form of Danielle Collins. Seemingly down and out, Swiatek pulled off a huge comeback in the third, though possibly with some help from the American. We look back at this match, and weigh in on Swiatek's still arduous journey to the title. 🎾 Rybakina's Rollercoaster Exit: Last year's finalist, Elena Rybakina, bid adieu in a second-round spectacle against Anna Blinkova. While still tough to say whether Rybakina is still learning how to navigate extremely tough matches, this one was special: several match points on both sides, the longest tie-break ever at Grand Slam level. A disappointing end for Rybakina, but a phenomenal showdown and a properly earned upset by Blinkova. 🔥 Sabalenka's Unstoppable Run: Aryna Sabalenka, the indomitable force, continues her ruthless march through the draw. Now with Anisimova up next, we shall see where her level is truly at - but no one can say she is not consistently putting herself in position to win the biggest titles. 🌈 Coco's Winning Streak: The prodigious Coco Gauff is now surfing on a long 10-match winning streak at Grand Slams. As the second week approaches, her challenges will only grow more difficult. We're particularly excited about the prospect of a teenager battle between Gauff and 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva! 🤔 Medvedev's Moment of Reflection: Doubt surrounds the prowess of Daniil Medvedev. Can he dispel the shadows of uncertainty and assert his dominance over the elite and find the extremely high level he displayed back in 2021 and at the Australian Open in 2022? 🎾 Sinner's Five-Set Odyssey: Jannik Sinner, a virtuoso in his own right, grapples with the challenge of the best-of-five sets format. Can he ascend to the summit and silence the skeptics, or will he face a symphony of setbacks? 👑 Djokovic's Australian Reign: Novak Djokovic, the perennial monarch of the Australian Open, faces a potential usurper in the form of Carlos Alcaraz. Is Djokovic's reign unassailable, or will Alcaraz be the architect of an epoch-defining upset? Coming closer to an 11th title in Australia, Djokovic still owns Rod Laver arena, but Alcaraz has already took over the throne at Wimbledon. Could he do it also down under? The greatest men's rivalry in the history of tennis? The most physical in the sport overall? Andre interviews co-host Owen about his recent project, a book about the Rafael Nadal vs Novak Djokovic Rivalry, appropriately called "The Golden Rivalry." They discuss motivation for writing the book, the challenges of putting it together, and several tangents about the great Novak Djokovic H2H Rafael Nadal matchup: what was their best match? Why is it so great? Is it really superior to the Federer vs Nadal rivalry? Contrary to popular belief, not all their matches are all that impressive. But which was the worst? And maybe the most important question of the rivalry: which match was most significant for their careers and the history of tennis overall? Jannik Sinner went from triple match point down to beating Novak Djokovic twice in the same day and leading Italy to it's first Davis Cup title since 1976. Not things you achieve everyday! After a supreme change in dynamics after reaching his first Grand Slam Semi-final at Wimbledon, Sinner went on to win his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Canada, and backed it up with a tremendous fall season, winning titles in Beijing and Vienna and reaching the final at the ATP Finals in Turin, in front of his home fans. Now ranked World No. 4, Jannik Sinner got two wins in three matches against the legendary Novak Djokovic, who finished the year as the World No. 1 for a record-breaking 8th year, and won three of the four Grand Slam titles of 2023. While glory at the ATP Finals was denied by the Serb, Sinner did not throw away his opportunity to make his country proud, lifting the Davis Cup trophy with his teammates, playing alongside Matteo Arnaldi, Lorenzo Sonego, Lorenzo Musetti, and cheered on by former Top 10 Matteo Berrettini on the team bench. What a year for Italy! Ben Lewis joins Andre in this week's podcast to talk about Canada's unlucky week at the Davis Cup, point out the silver lining of Milos Raonic's return to the team. With a tough loss in the quarter-finals to Finland, Team Canada goes back to the qualifying stage of the Davis Cup. Ben and Andre chat about this year's shortcomings, pointing that Gabriel Diallo's match was the coin toss, but he could not produce the tennis he managed during the group stage and that allowed him to win his second title on the challenger tour in the fall. To top the less than ideal week, Vasek Pospisil's woes were back, as he could not shake off what appeared to be a shoulder injury, and Canada bowed out 2-1 to Finland, as Felix Auger-Aliassime was unfit to play, with a lower-body injury. What will then be of the Canadians in 2024? Can Felix Auger-Aliassime get back into the Top 10? How far will Milos Raonic go before he calls it a career? Can the big-serving Canadian win another title (maybe the last edition of the Hall of Fame Open in Newport on grass?) And what awaits Denis Shapovalov, who decided to call it a season after a tough Round of 16 loss to Roman Safiullin at Wimbledon? Let us know what you think! Follow Ben Lewis! Crina Mustafa, basketball and tennis content creator, comes over to Tennis and Bagels Podcast to chat (and cheer) with Andre about Canada's history-making moment with the Billie Jean King Cup title in Seville. Leylah Annie Fernandez, the 21-year-old dynamo who's been making waves since her epic run to the 2021 US Open final, took on the role of leader of the Canadian team despite her young age, and did not disappoint. She went undefeated in 2023 in Billie Jean King Cup competition in both singles and double combined, making it a total of 8-0 for the year. After tough matches and near-misses, Fernandez fended off Ysaline Bonaventure in the Vancouver qualifiers in April after being a set and a break down to send Canada to the Billie Jean King Cup Finals stage. There, her way was no simpler, having to go down the trenches against Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain in a three-hour, two-tiebreak battle, then getting her first top 10 win against Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova of Czechia in three sets in the semi-finals. Against Italy, the title was sealed with a straight-forward win over Jasmine Paolini. Another young star seems to be being born in Canadian tennis, as Marina Stakusic left her mark in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals. The 18-year-old, who has done incredibly well in the ITF World Tennis Tour, coming off of a win at the Tevlin Challenger in Toronto, lost only one match the whole week, going down against former Roland Garros champion and former World No. 2 in two sets, but winning every other match against players much higher ranked than her. Her incredible performance gave Canada the courage and belief necessary to go all the way, as Stakusic also went relatively untroubled against former Roland Garros semifinalist Martina Trevisan in the first singles against Italy. Rounding up the team, US Open women's doubles champion Gaby Dabrowski partnered up with Fernandez in the critical match against Czechia to defeat multiple Grand Slam champions Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova to send Canada to the final. Rebecca Marino and Genie Bouchard also left their hearts on the court, with Bouchard taking on to the court in doubles. At the end of it all, Heidi El Tabakh also got her much awaited and deserved triumph with Team Canada as the team captain. The cheerful, but calm and focused captain's actions and critical decision making led Canada to be at its optimal state to finally lift the coveted trophy for the first time in the competition's history. A lot was on the line for Iga Swiatek at the WTA Finals in Cancun. A win would bring her her second-biggest title of the year (behind all four majors), and her first at the year-end WTA tournament featuring the Top 8 performing players in the world in 2023. And last but not least: if all things aligned, she would also become the World No.1, overtaking Aryna Sabalenka and making sure she would finish her second consecutive year as the World No.1 And Iga Siwatek did all that - in style. Under the hurricane-like conditions in Cancun, Swiatek took down every opponent in straight sets, and left the best for last: losing a total of six games in the semi-finals and final combined, she put her destiny in her hands when she beat Aryna Sabalenka in the semis, and completely dominated Jessica Pegula in windy conditions in the final for a final bakery shop demonstration of the year, winning 6-1, 6-0. What will 2024 be like for the generational talent from Poland? Andre and Vansh also chat about the incredible week in Paris on the ATP side, which saw Novak Djokovic lift and ATP Masters 1000 for the 40th time. Needless to say, a record, which he has been competing against himself in for a number of months now. Overcoming physical difficulties which prevented the legendary Serb from playing his best tennis, Djokovic still did what he does better than anyone in history: winning from any position. Clutch in decisive moments, patient in neutral ones. making sure no match ever went fully out of his control. Taking on inspiring performances from Tallon Griekspoor and Andrey Rublev, and closing the door on an impressive and uplifting week from Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, the World No. 1 extended his records in Paris, in ATP wins, number of big titles, and is now only one win away from securing a hardly-comprehensible 400th week as the World No. 1. As a 36-year-old. We are running out of superlatives, or any descriptive words for that matter. for Novak Djokovic. Andre and Owen talk WTA match-ups and how the many permutations can greatly affect results at the WTA Finals in Cancun. Will Aryna Sabalenka continue to establish herself as No.1? Can Elena Rybakina prove herself as a fighter on top of being one of the best servers in today's women's tennis? Will Iga Swiatek be able to re-establish herself with her first WTA Finals title? Plus all the other great players who are looking to end the season on top after extremely tight competition all year. Coco Gauff will look to keep the momentum going after her US Open victory and prove it was not just a dream run; Ons Jabeur and Marketa Vondrousova, the Wimbledon finalist and champion, will look to find good form again and keep themselves close to the top 4. Jessica Pegula will try to lift her game and show that she's more than just a consistent player. And closing the field, Maria Sakkari will try her best to show she belongs among the WTA tennis elite with a strong performance, after coming in as an alternate with the withdrawal of Karolina Muchova due to injury. On the ATP Tour side, a couple more weeks are still left until all is said and done for 2023. But one of the most improved players of the year, Jannik Sinner, is looking very sharp and ever-so dangerous after his second consecutive win over Daniil Medvedev in the Vienna final. An extremely physical battle, where Sinner showed his improved physical endurance as well as patience to outplay one of the fittest players on tour, and one of the best defenders to step on a hard court in Daniil Medvedev. One thing is still left for Jannik: to prove himself in the Grand Slams and maybe even get a win over all-time great Novak Djokovic. Lastly, Andre gives a shoutout to compatriot Félix Auger-Aliassime for his inspiring run to his title defense in Basel (with some unbelievable serve stats on his side.) With all four Grand Slam tournaments behind us, there's only two things in mind for the top tennis players in the ATP and the WTA: the Year-End Finals and the World No.1 ranking. Important tournaments took place this past couple of weeks, with two WTA 1000 (Guadalajara and Beijing) and one ATP Masters 1000 (Shanghai). Iga Swiatek added much important points by winning the Beijing title, and keep herself in hot pursuit to take back the World No.1 ranking from Aryna Sabalenka and finish the year in the top spot for the second consecutive season. Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz is going to have to work a lot harder, trailing 2023 three-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic and going into one of the toughest parts of the season for the Spaniard in the indoor hard-courts in Europe - but never count Carlitos out, and Paris is still around the corner. Some other mentions on the WTA Elite Trophy, it's logistical difficulties and appeal, a potential WTA Next Gen, and this week's winners: Hubert Hurkacz taking his second ATP Masters 1000 title in Shanghai, Qinwen Zheng winning her biggest title at home in Zhengzhou, Jessica Pegula's emotional title in Seoul, and Leylah Annie Fernandez's first title in 19 months in Hong Kong after a difficult season. Grand Slam season is over. Steve Flink, tennis writer and hall-of-famer comes back to chat with Vansh about the US Open men's tournament, which saw virtually undisputed GOAT Novak Djokovic win his 24th Grand Slam title, an Open Era record and All-Time tie with controversial Margaret Court. They talk about how the draw played out, difficulties for Novak Djokovic, who managed to win only for the fourth time at the US Open despite making 10 finals. Daniil Medvedev sneaked through his side of the draw without much talk about him until the epic semi-final against defending champion and then World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz, denying a second consecutive Grand Slam final showdown between the Spaniard and Novak Djokovic after their Wimbledon epic. Flink and Vansh also go into detail about the matches, including the final, how Medvedev could have played better, and how Djokovic proved his dominance even at 36 years old. It didn't start the perfect way for Coco Gauff in New York City at the US Open final. She looked destined to finish runner-up in another Grand Slam final, with the new WTA World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka poised to win her second major of the season after the Australian Open. But how wrong we were. Now coached by Brad Gilbert, Coco Gauff became a wall from the back of the court, and simply nothing went past her in the next two sets. With answers to everything Sabalenka tried, Gauff became now destined to lift the trophy at home. And lift the trophy she did. At 19 years of age, Coco Gauff`s career, now seemingly so much longer than anyone would expect for someone that young, has reached new heights at Grand Slam level. The sky is the limit for the young American! And in the second half of the podcast, Andre and Owen just couldn't help but chat a little about tomorrow's men's final between Novak Djokovic and unexpected (though not less talented) Daniil Medvedev. US OPEN TIME! For Owen and Andre, the ATP side is clear: after epic clashes between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, they just stand above all others as the favourites. Save somestruck of bad luck, which seems to have been haunting Novak Djokovic at the US Open, he should be there. Save the menace of Jannik Sinner, Carlitos Alcaraz should also find his way into yet another Grand Slam clash against the all-time major leader Serbian. Are we wrong? Should we worry more about a potential... party pooper? On the WTA side, things get more complicated. With no clear favourite, five women come stand out as potential winners: Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina, Ons Jabeur, and Coco Gauff. While the race seems to be more between Sabalenka and Swiatek, this is a game of match-ups, and in a best of three sets format, slipping into a deficit could lead to an early upset a lot quicker. And depending on who meets who at any point in the tournament, the finalists could be wildly different. It is another exciting Grand Slam on the women's side - who will lift the coveted trophy in the end of the fortnight? Women's tennis has seemingly moved on from its 2000's and 2010's stars a lot faster than the ATP tour. For a while it was quite difficult to predict who would come out on top, and while there seemed to be a lack of consistency, this hasn't been the case since Simona Halep and Ash Barty ascended to the top, one after the other. Now, with incredible players in their early to mid-twenties playing some of the greatest tennis the world has ever seen, the fun is starting fresh: who will become the next greatest? Who will chase the biggest record? What will be the biggest rivalries? And that's what Juan Ignacio is here for, to help us break down just why women's tennis is so damn exciting. Going from Iga Swiatek's big run to her third Roland Garros' title and the epic matches he had to win to get there, we discussed other up and coming players as well as the newly established elite, among them: Bia Haddad Maia, the lefty Brazilian who fights until the end; Karolina Muchova, who has been ranked far below what is truly some of the best tennis in this era, but is determined to fix this; Aryna Sabalenka and her powerful game, which makes her arguably the biggest favourite for Wimbledon; Elena Rybakina, who owns what's possibly the best serve in the WTA and will come back to defend her title at Wimbledon; Ons Jabeur, the fan-favourite Tunisian who has an endless arsenal at her disposal and a wealth of talent. The tennis and stories on the WTA Tour are simply captivating. It's a bottomless well of great sports entertainment. And we should all be paying a whole lot more attention to it (and just paying a whole lot more, really.) Sit back and enjoy Juan's great knowledge! In this episode of Tennis and Bagels, Andre and Vansh look at the performances of Carlos Alcaraz and Petra Kvitova in particular, as they shape up their games to the Grass Court Slam. Kvitova, a former World No.2 and two-time Wimbledon champion, showed once again signs of why she's had the career she's had so far, but since winning at SW19 in 2014 she has not done so well in London. Could this be the year? Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz has finally completed the surface set, winning his first grass court title at Queen's - and what a fantastic week that was for the World No.1. While Alcaraz does not have the experience on grass to be considered a heavy favourite for Wimbledon, he has simply amazed us with his ability to learn and make adjustments so quickly. What can't Alcaraz do?? In other news, the always mercurial Jelena Ostapenko managed to once again get her hands on a trophy by playing her best tennis - an Avatar state where she becomes virtually unbeatable, but her dips in match can be too costly. And Alexander Bublik put his mind into it and showed why he's one of the most talented players on tour - he seems to only lack the motivation to break into the Elite of the game. Though a Halle title might not be the best stepping stone for Wimbledon unless you're named Roger Federer... As per usual, Steve Flink joins Vansh Vermani in a deep, highly knowledgeable and analytical talk about yet another Grand Slam tournament! They cover mostly the Men's tournament - as will be the new standard with Flink, as he moves on to focus more on the ATP side and simply enjoy Women's tennis. Novak Djokovic finally got ahead in the Slam race and stands alone for the first time with 23 major titles, a third French Open, and the triple career Grand Slam, a feat only surpassed by Steffi Graf, who has won all major tournaments at least four times each. But now Djokovic is the only one along Serena Williams to own 23 of the most coveted trophies in tennis, most in the Open Era and only one behind Margaret Court for all-time titles... and he is the overwhelming favourite to win Wimbledon. Regardless of what the GOAT debate means for anyone, one thing is certain: Novak Djokovic keeps pushing the limits of what is possible in tennis, and seems to be chasing nothing but his own records now. Can anyone ever be more accomplished than Novak Djokovic? The French Open is now over, and all the champions crowned. Iga Swiatek put on a great show yet again, but was pushed the hardest on route to a Roland-Garros title, finally able to defeat "surprise" finalist Karolina Muchova in three sets in the final. Creating her own history, Muchova herself managed an incredible feat reaching the championship match, notably taking down World No.2 and Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka in what was probably the most epic and dramatic match of the tournament. After a far less-than-ideal tournament in Rome with many rain delays and a clear demonstration that the men's event is still the most important thing, we still got to enjoy some seriously good tennis. While neither one of Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic were not present in the final after a remarkable 18 years, the new guard has stepped up to bring the level we all expect from one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments in the world. Holger Rune was responsible for stopping Djokovic from reaching another final, defeating the 22-time major champion in the quarter-finals. But arguably the story of the men's event was the self-proclaimed clay-hater and hard court specialist Daniil Medvedev, who showed tremendous form on clay after never having won a single match in Rome - and finally took down Stefanos Tsitsipas and Holger Rune on rout to his sixth ATP Masters 1000 title. What will he accomplish at Roland Garros, now that he is No.1 in the Race and the World No.2? On the women's side, Iga Swiatek started her title defense as well as she could possibly hope for, losing two games in two matches. But the ending was far from ideal from the dominant World No.1, as she was forced to retire against Elena Rybakina after two exciting sets of tennis with an injury. If her Roland Garros title defense was already looking more difficult due to the newly energized Aryna Sabalenka, champion in Madrid over the Pole herself, now that Elena Rybakina is showing great form on clay, an injury was the last thing Swiatek wanted. Is the 2023 WTA Big 3 going to give the world another series of tennis showdowns in Paris? Are we looking at the Stuttgart, Madrid, or Rome champion as the big favourite for the coveted title at Roland-Garros? For the first time since 2004, Rafael Nadal will not be in Paris for Roland Garros. The 14-time champion has a 98% winning percentage at the French Open, losing only 3 matches and pushed to five sets only 3 times - all of which he won. But in 2023, Nadal was forced to withdraw due to a persisting injury picked up at the Australian Open in January. Now what? With him in the draw, it's easy to pick him as a favourite - almost a duty. But now, with Novak Djokovic not at his best, Stefanos Tsitsipas getting back to his best, Carlos Alcaraz back at World No. 1, Daniil Medvedev playing the best tennis he's ever played on clay (which has now put him at No.1 in the ATP Tour singles Race ranking), and Holger Rune capitalizing on his immense potential, the door seems wide open. Just as it was back in 2004, when Gaston Gaudio won at Roland-Garros, coming back from two sets to love to beat none other than Guillermo Coria in the final. And then there's the possible retirement news. We don't have much to say about this, except that we hope Nadal will be fully healthy and that he finds the joy in playing tennis again. Is Ons Jabeur going to get healthy for Paris? Is Paula Badosa find her best tennis again? On the men's side, we saw Holger Rune showing what he's capable of, and that he can still get even better. The Sunshine Double is over. With no hard court Grand Slam in sight for the next 5 months, does it mean anything for the high performers, Daniil Medvedev, Petra Kvitova, Aryna Sabalenka, Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner? It's a wrap on Indian Wells! The tournament with unique conditions, hard courts slow as clay, and a reputation as the fifth grand slam, gave tennis fans around the world plenty of entertainment, and nerds like us plenty to think and talk about. Elena Rybakina powered her way through to win her first-ever WTA 1000 title, and did so with a bang: by completely blowing 2022 champion and World No.1 Iga Swiatek off the court in the semifinals, and taking her sweet revenge over World No.2 and Australian Open champion (b. Rybakina in final) Aryna Sabalenka. Carlos Alcaraz did not drop a set in the tournament, seeing off rivals Felix Auger-Aliassime, Jannik Sinner, and Daniil Medvedev, in convincing wins. The level of tennis Alcaraz is playing, the level of fitness, on-court awareness, tennis IQ, and shot-making, are all out of this world, and it's VERY hard not to keep hyping him and believing he can ascend to the level of the all-time greats. Daniil Medvedev seems to have found a lot of confidence in his game: with great wins under his belt now, including Novak Djokovic, Felis Auger-Aliassime, and Andrey Rublev, he is truly back to the Top 10 and will remain there. But can he win more Grand Slams? Can he become World No.1 again? We still need to watch more for that... On other news, Alex de Minaur wins the battle of tough conditions in Acapulco, where it seems only he was able to master the humidity. Nico Jarry made the most of his comeback by winning the title in his hometown of Santiago, Chile, while Donna Vekic defeated Carolina Garcia for the title in Monterrey in her own comeback story, and young Ukrainian talent Marta Kostyuk finally claimed her first WTA title in Austin - and coincidentally over a Russian player, Varvara Gracheva, with whom she did not shake hands at the net, in a pre-match agreement from both players likely initiated by the Ukrainian. Kostyuk has been vocal about the war and her views on Russian and Belarussian players since the beginning, so it was an expected, but still impactful gesture. Thanks for listening! Another week, another title for Ig... Barbora Krejcikova?? The former World No.2 is coming back from an elbow injury, but seems to have found all the great shots and on-court intelligence that led her to a Roland Garros title back in 2021 - and the key to defeating Iga Swiatek in finals. On top of that, she achieved a major feat in defeating the nos 1, 2, and 3 in the world en route to the title, coming back from a bagel in the first set against Aryna Sabalenka, and a tough battle against Jessica Pegula, to earn her first WTA 1000 title in Dubai. Interesting stuff ahead if she stays healthy... On other news, Andy Murray seems to have found a special level in 2023. still having to earn all his wins in epic deciding sets, but the level he's found in Doha was quite special - including the epic, insane, roller coaster win over Jiri Lehecka from match points down. Special mention for Félix Auger-Aliassime, who has put up an immense fight against the unfavorable match-up against Daniil Medvedev, who went on to win the title, his second in a row. And the Norrie Alcaraz rivalry catches fire! After losing to Carlitos in Buenos Aires the week prior, Cameron Norrie didn't let the disappointment hit him and he claimed the Rio de Janeiro title in three great sets of tennis. Although Carlos Alcaraz was suffering from an injury, now confirmed to be a hamstring strain, he still produced some of the shots of the year. Just insane talent. Good wins for Hubert Hurkacz and Camila Giorgi, coming back from tough periods with tough losses (and Giorgi literally won her title as we recorded lol) Thanks for listening! How great it is to see Iga Swiatek and Carlos Alcaraz back in action! Swiatek showed us all once more how dominant she can be - 2022 was not a fluke. While we understand that she got a somewhat favourable draw, it only shows that one must be at their absolute best to challenge here, something unfortunately Jessica Pegula, a favourite here in the podcast, was not able to achieve on Sunday in Doha. Carlos Alcaraz brought back all the swag we missed, along with his great shot-making and tennis IQ. Nothing seems to be lacking: the power, the accuracy, the timing, the shot selection, the incredible energy. Buenos Aires was probably the best choice for his come back! And major props to Cam Norrie for playing his best and believing until the end - made us wish there were a third set. To conclude, we come back to the progress Daniil Medvedev has made since Vienna last year, how he is once again not only finding some of his best level, but also showcasing his outstanding problem-solving skills, and making especially that Rotterdam final against Jannik Sinner turn into the match he wanted. Meanwhile, Taylor Fritz is showing encouraging signs after his title in Delray Beach that he's going to be maximizing his game and believing he can win against anyone on tour - with his serve and excellent groundstrokes, he is not to be underestimated by no one. We also go on a tangent about Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, because why not. Thanks for listening! Janik Sinner confirms that he belongs at the top of the game, but he still needs to make the next step to win the big titles. Novak Djokovic went 5-0 in a dominant tournament. But did he need to? Owen and Andre discuss the ATP Finals champion's campaign in the year-end ATP tournament, and wonder how his 2023 season will go about, particularly the Australian Open. We end the episode with the good old Grand Slam race between Nadal and Djokovic: who's going to end up with the most? How many majors do they have in them, realistically? Is Nadal close to retiring? Even with the draws, it is still a monumental task to call what could possibly happen at the WTA Finals in Fort Worth next week. With Iga Swiatek leading the head to head against all the 7 other players 19-1, she is the clear favourite to the final title of 2022. But will Jessica Pegula's first WTA 1000 title move things around? Is Caroline Garcia's incredible resurgence make a difference, considering she's the only one to have beaten Swiatek in the Top 8? No tennis fan today has not heard of Roger Federer. Possibly, anyone who has heard of tennis knows at least the names of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. In this episode, we talk about how Federer has been a part of our tennis journey, whether we became fans because of him of if he just was, for a long time, synonymous with Tennis and GOAT. As his final match took place alongside Rafael Nadal at the Laver Cup 2022 in London, Andre, Vansh and Owen talk about Federer's legacy, some of his best matches, most important results, and how he helped shape and transform tennis in the last 20 years. This is a really special episode. The legendary Serena Williams has announced she is “evolving away from tennis” this week in a magnificent Vogue article. No better guest to help Vansh breakdown Serena’s legendary career and her legacy and place in tennis history than Hall of Famer Steve Flink. A groundbreaker, trailblazer in all areas of her life, Serena Williams won a whopping 23 Grand Slam titles over a 20+-year long career. Now at 41 years old, the legendary American announced during the National Bank Open in Toronto, Canada, that this will be her last season, and her final stage could not be any more fitting than the Arthur Ashe Stadium at Flushing Meadows during the US Open in New York. We also conclude with long thoughts on the current state of the WTA's Top 10, and that although they are really good, they have been very unlucky with injuries recently. With that being said, who is left in the draw that has the game and consistency to push Iga Swiatek to the limit, and maybe even beat her? Iga Swiatek is the favourite for Roland Garros, there's no question about it. It looks like even in her worst, she is just too good for the entire field. Ons Jabeur went on a great winning streak of her own, winning the title in Madrid and reaching the final in Rome the week after, but ran out of steam against the World No.1, raising the actual main question surrounding Swiatek: who will beat her and when? It would be a devastating loss if she doesn't win the French Open in Roland Garros, but she won't win forever (although the likelihood of her next loss being greater in the grass season.) And what to say of Novak Djokovic? Absent for most tournaments of the year, came back rusty and losing matches, getting bageled in his hometown, losing to the player who is the most taunted to become the greatest of his generation, Carlos Alcaraz, in a titanic match, only to come back to Rome and win his 38th Masters 1000 title, picking up his 1000th win on the way. Who will stop Djokovic? Is Nadal healthy enough? Is Alcaraz ready to win a Grand Slam? Is Tsitsipas going to find a way to exorcise his demons? The Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers two weeks ago saw many nations qualify to the Bille Jean King Cup Finals taking place in November 2022. It also saw Andre, the creator of this podcast and Social Media at Tennis Canada, get real close to Leylah Fernandez, Rebecca Marino, Gaby Dabrowski, Francoise Abanda and Carol Zhao! With the tie in Vancouver, Andre got to experience a lot of what it is that makes the BJK Cup special for fans and players, even though the tournament itself may seem to be struggling deeply with star power and prestige lately. In this episode, we go back to some overall thoughts on the last hard court tournament before we finally embark into the clay court season -- which we've been waiting for a long time now! Iga Swiatek got to extreme new heights, not only winning the Sunshine Double with the Miami Open title, but also reaching the World No. 1 ranking, completing a sweep of all WTA 1000 events of the season so far, and extending her winning streak to 17. And clay is her favourite surface, so it's now quite hard to imagine what could stop her now. On the men's side, Carlos Alcaraz keeps showing everyone that he's been worth the hype. We can always expect him to deliver, not only good tennis, but also good and consistent wins. At 18 years old, he is the youngest Miami Open champion ever, and 3rd youngest Masters 1000 champion overall. With th e clay season coming up, are we already considering him a Roland Garros contender? On other news, we bid our early farewell to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who announced his retirement from tennis at Roland Garros, the French major. Only fitting. What a phenomenal player. This week, Owen and Vansh sat down with a pretty special guest. The famous tennis “Superfan” and Queen of the Desert LaWanda. She discusses her enriching 2 week experience in Indian Wells Tennis Paradise. She speaks with infectious joy about about how unexpected and flattering all the fame she received was (both on Twitter and in the Player Locker Rooms). She shared stories from her favorite players, most notably Nadal and Azarenka. Additionally, we talk quite a bit about Carlos Alcaraz and what makes him special. We also talk bigger picture topics about how tennis can improve and grow as a sport. Do we even need to tell you to follow Lawanda? Never are we ever prepared for a player's retirement. But literally nobody could have prepared for Ashleigh Barty's retirement. The World No. 1 was arguably the most dominant female player since Serena Williams, staying at the top of the game for 120 weeks and winning Wimbledon, Roland Garros, and, her last tournament as it turned out, the Australian Open in 2022. What could we say, all the exciting rivalries that could be, are no more, including more of Iga Swiatek, Naomi Osaka and Aryna Sabalenka matchups. But, we also recognize that she is doing that after finding it is the right time for her to do so, and pursue new dreams and challenges. *SORRY ABOUT THE AUDIO QUALITY. Andre's mic cable broke, so he was using the absolutely last resort, the nemesis of any sound editor: the computer mic. What a nightmare. I am really sorry about that* Hi! We were super busy with other life things, so tennis (which was undeniably in a more lukewarm part of the season) took a bit of a backseat place. But we`re HERE! And excited to see what happens at Indian Wells, the Tennis Paradise. Who will win ? Is Medvedev going to find better form, now as the new World No. 1? Is Rafael Nadal going to keep his streak going and add a 4th hard court title to his already unreal 2022 season? And what the heck will happen in the WTA draw? Which rivalries will dominate the circuit? Ash Barty is still out since Australia, so there is an absence of an unstoppable force on the tour right now (which Andre hopes will be occupied by Leylah Fernandez). Grab a coffee, a bagel, sit back and relax. This episode started with an idea of covering Félix Auger-Aliassime's title run and final run the week after, Carlos Alcaraz's ridiculous talent for tennis, some of the WTA events and that was it. turned out as a rant on the current ATP Top 10 level, how Rublev has plateaued, how the WTA is simply amazing right now with the entire Top 10 and more capable of winning major titles and playing fantastic matches, a Wimbledon rant and more. Off the record, we even talked NFT's and a very... peculiar film called 7 Days in Hell. Watch at your own risk, we simply couldn't leave this in. Gosh we even forgot to end the episode.... Rafael Nadal, winner of the 2022 Australian Open, a double career Grand Slam, and 21 major titles. The lead is his. Is he the player to beat? How close are the next generation of players, those 25 and under, to finally take the lead and become the next greats? When will Medvedev, Tsitsipas, or anyone else finally conquer their doubts and the Big 3 in a Grand Slam final? Andre, Vansh, and Owen discuss tactics, strategies and are probably a little too harsh on Medvedev this time around. We also discuss the win of Ash Barty Down Under, her home Slam. How important will it turn out to be for her career? Who can defeat her at her best? It looks like Barty came to chage the status quo and establish big serving and slicing as new weapons in the women's game - ones that can be replicated by anyone, regardless of how tall they are. And seriously, very seriously, all players should practice playing against backhand slices far more often. But Collins did a great job in her first Grand Slam final. We are alive! Tennis and Bagels is alive! Andre and Vansh got together after a month-long break to have a chat about the US Open men's draw - the last major of the year, the 4th Grand Slam tournament. They cover nearly the whole draw, taking some time to chat about the different sections to pick the players who could have the best chance of advancing in the tournament. In the end, the main questions remain: can Novak Djokovic seal the ultimate tennis achievement with the Calendar Grand Slam, or simply the Grand Slam, in New York? Or will the next generation of tennis players, led by Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas, prevent the Serb from achieving glory and instead one of them claim their first Grand Slam? We'll have to watch during the fortnight. It’s a happy time at Tennis and Bagels as Owen gets a chance to talk with his idol: former tennis writer Juan José Vallejo. Juan José tells his remarkable story of being a tennis fan and later a tennis writer, first on Pete Bodo’s TennisWorld, then on The Changeover — which Owen got hooked on in March of this year and hasn’t stopped reading since — and finally for Rolling Stone. After talking about his journey through tennis writing, Juan José shows the unbelievable extent of his tennis expertise through talking about the Big Three, a few NextGen players that never were, the merits of physical vs. mental peaks, and of course the greatest tennis match ever: the 2009 Australian Open semifinal between Nadal and Verdasco.Juan José was incredibly generous with his time, and Owen is still buzzing at getting the chance to have this chat. Here are links to Juan José’s writing (be like Owen. Go down the rabbit hole. And there are 20 pages of his work on The Changeover, all of them worth checking out). The full team is back together with a great lineup of topics for this episode! First, an analysis of the Ashleigh Barty-Karolina Plíšková final, with a deep dive into tactics and Barty’s impressive win. We then discuss the high-quality women’s semifinals and tournament as a whole, mentioning players who impressed us or have reason to be optimistic going forward. Finally, a preview of the men’s final: does Berrettini have a chance to stop Djokovic from reaching #20? How can he break through the neverending series of problems that Djokovic presents? Throughout this episode, Owen attempts witty sarcasm but his excessively neutral poker face unsurprisingly confuses Andre and Vansh and makes them reconsider their choice in a podcast partner. Enjoy! Vansh sits down to conduct an in-depth discussion with esteemed Tennis.Com writer, historian, and author Steve Flink. They reflect on Novak Djokovic’s historic accomplishments that he sealed by winning a 2nd Roland-Garros title. They dive into his matches from R4 onwards where he came back from two sets down TWICE and accomplished the most difficult task in tennis by defeating the king of clay, Rafael Nadal, on court Phillipe-Chatrier. They discuss Stefanos Tsitsipas, his RG result, and his tremendous season so far, along with assessing the rest of the Next Gen. Additionally, they also give their thoughts on Roger Federer and his comeback struggles. Novak Djokovic defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-7 (6), 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 in the Roland-Garros final. It sealed his 19th major and his Double Career Grand Slam — achievements so large that Andre and Owen didn’t just discuss the match, they returned to the GOAT debate — a topic they first discussed on the podcast eleven months ago (also Owen’s first appearance on Tennis and Bagels). Djokovic’s GOAT case has taken on a new dimension after this tournament, and this episode covers why that is. Even at 34, Djokovic is achieving new things, setting himself apart from Federer and Nadal, and he looks far from finished. Andre and Owen talk in depth about Djokovic-Nadal LVIII, the momentous Roland-Garros semifinal. We focus particularly sharply on that incredible third set, which had just about all the brilliant tennis a fan can dream of. This third set captured what makes this rivalry so special and unique — these two have an ability to push the other to the very brink, and to raise their own level when put under pressure. This intense survival ability and competitiveness results in animalistic rallies and grace under pressure, and we talk about the glory this rivalry is capable of producing. What tactics did Djokovic produce to achieve the Herculean task of knocking off Nadal at Roland-Garros? And why was this Nadal loss — just his third in Paris — different than the others? Rafael Nadal has won 13 Roland-Garros titles and boasts a scarcely-believable 105-2 record on the Parisian clay. Tomorrow in the semifinals, he will duel the man to which he has suffered the most losses: Novak Djokovic. While Djokovic has had success against Nadal at Roland-Garros before, we agreed before this episode that he is a fairly heavy underdog, so rather than focus on Nadal’s greatest-ever, tried-and-true formula for success on clay, we talked a lot about what Djokovic could do to get some traction in this match. A lot is on the line here, and Andre and Owen previewed the match, discussing some tactics, history, and predictions! We’re at the halfway point of Roland-Garros, so Andre and Owen review some of the players who have emerged into the second week! Świątek has been really dominant in Paris since the start of the 2020 tournament, but she’s shown she can fight as well. Is she now the solid favorite to win the tournament? Next, we discuss the Big Three — their efficiency in the early rounds, their chances to go further, and more! We wrap up by talking about Serena Williams. Many have counted her out of this tournament, but she’s displayed great form so far, and her section of the draw has opened up. Is this the chance to get #24, and if not now, when is the best chance? In this episode, Andre, Vansh, and Owen discuss Federer’s run to the 2009 Roland-Garros title. We begin with a recap of the 57th edition of the best rivalry ever on the men's side: Djokovic-Nadal in the final. What made this match closer than the pair's recent clashes on clay, and what are the takeaways? How should Djokovic feel about coming up just short despite a huge physical effort at the end of the tournament? And what is the verdict on Nadal's lead-up to his beloved Roland-Garros? We also discuss Thiem, Sonego, and Tsitsipas and their achievements in Rome and prospects going forward. Also, is there a method to Medvedev's madness on clay, or is he just at a loss for ideas and looking for plants to mess with? Next is the WTA side -- Świątek reached a scary level of dominance against Plíšková in the final, bagging a big title and saving a pair of match points in the third round -- one with a winner. Should we re-evaluate Barty's status as Roland-Garros favorite based on this result? Gauff had a great week in Rome, toppling another top player and good prediction to win Roland-Garros -- Sabalenka -- on the way to the semifinals. Andre, Vansh, and Owen recap the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters! After COVID-19 put this tournament on hold in 2020, it was lovely to see it back this year, and the field delivered a week of entertaining tennis! Stefanos Tsitsipas won his first Masters 1000, soundly defeating Andrey Rublev with a tactical masterclass in the final. What does the future hold for these two young guys? Should the early defeats of Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic be the cause for concern? And what of the upcoming return of Roger Federer and Dominic Thiem? In this special edition of the Tennis and Bagels Podcast, we discuss a bit on which player would benefit the most from good results in this tournament, on the short term going deeper into the clay court season leading up to Roland Garros, and for their future careers. The answer will shock you!... or maybe not. But sadly for Daniil Medvedev, he did not have a chance to participate in the Monte-Carlo Masters. What impressed us about Andrey Rublev’s run to yet another ATP 500 title and what is the next step for the rising star? Petra Kvitová’s peak was as high as ever in her steamrolling of Garbiñe Muguruza in the Doha final, raising her stock for the 2021 season! And what to make of Muguruza’s win-laden yet title-less season so far? Karolina Plišková and Elina Svitolina are fixtures at the top of the WTA rankings, but have turned in some disappointing performances as of late — what do we think they could do better? In this episode we talk about the ATP Nitto Finals as it ends its time in London, now to be held in Turin starting 2021. Danill Medvedev was the winner, not losing any matches this time in contrast with last season, when he lost every single one. On his way, he beat Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Dominic Thiem, world's number 1, 2, and 3 respectively. Thiem also beat both Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal en route to the final. His matches against the world's top 2 players and GOAT candidates were arguably the best ones of the tournament. The future of these players is interesting: where we would normally have gotten a Djokovic vs Nadal final, we got a Medvedev vs Thiem, as both of them beat the Big 3 members in the semis. What will happen in the next slams? Do these results mean something or are they just hiccoughs? Plus, we have a great announcement in this episode! Gill Gross joins us again for a discussion on the season finale for the ATP tour in 2020. We talked about the groups, who has better chances to get to the semis, finals, and to win, as well as making our picks. Is it the best chance for Rafael Nadal to win his first ATP Finals title? Will Novak Djokovic tie Roger Federer's 6 titles? Or maybe Zverev and Medvedev can keep up their winning ways, taking advantage of the more favourable conditions to their game in order to take the trophy home? Who knows. But we took some guesses and did some predictions. Gill Gross from Monday Match Analysis joins Vansh and Andre for a discussion on the Alexander Zverev's accusation of domestic violence by ex girlfriend Olya Sharypova. We talked about his cavalier attitude and statements regarding the allegations, the awkward silence from the tennis biggest organizations (mainly the ATP) and our own views on the subject. We also spent some time talking a bit about the actual tennis played during the Paris Masters 1000, last tournament of the year before the ATP Finals. Zverev is, quite surprisingly, playing awfully well and was downed by surprising titlist Danill Medvedev, who has not enjoyed a great year compared to his stellar 2019.What do you think about all this? Vansh and I discuss Vienna, where Djokovic lost shockingly to Sonego, a Lucky Loser, but cliched year end number 1 for the sixth time in the ATP rankings. And then Rublev got another title in his incredible 2020 season, beating Djokovic's conqueror in the final. On other news, Jonathan Millman finally won his first ATP title in the 250 level tournament in Nur-Sultan. Just a couple days after Vansh tweeted that he was a a sad list of best players that never won a title. Good on him that he managed to move to the winners circle! And then, Paris, where Nadal will play and has a chance (a big chance) of adding a third indoor hard court title to his name. His best chance yet, since he is physically fresh like he has never been before. Could be a catalyst to the ATP Finals in London right after. Where Vansh talks about how he started to play tennis, how he got into it, who was his favourite player? Well, if you read this caption, you will know that he found 2 Prince rackets in a back alley dumpster, liked the rhythm of the game, and the 2008 Wimbledon Men's final between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer was the first match he watched on tv. Crazy. We also chat about Felix Auger Aliassime, Sam Querry, Australian Open, Covid, and the race to number 1 between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Not much chance to Nadal, but he could steal his first ATP Finals in London, as this is the first time ever he is physically fresh. Could this be the one? In the part one of the US Open recap, Vansh and I are joined by Mert Ertunga, former tennis player, coach, and now writing for Tennis with an Accent (a lovely accent, by the way.) We talk about the extremely high quality semifinals between Naomi Osaka and Jennifer Brady, and how they are such solid players who delivered what was possibly the best match of the tournament. Then we move to the thrilling Victoria Azarenka and Serena Williams match, an old rivalry revived with all the high emotions and physical aspect that only those two can bring. In the final, we discuss about Naomi Osaka's game, and how it is a step above everyone else's, but also how Vika managed to almost make a dream 3 week span with a Cincinnati and US OpenDouble. But Osaka's convictions and game were too strong tbis time. In the part two of the US Open recap, Vansh and I are joined by Mert Ertunga, former tennis player, coach, and now writing for Tennis with an Accent (a lovely accent, by the way.) This part was dedicated to the most bizarre final a lot of us fans have seen in a Grand Slam probably ever. Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev delivered great tennis and absolutely tense tennis within the same point at times. And it was great. There's just too much to unpack in this match, but bottom line is: Dominic Thiem is finally a Grand Slam champion after heartbreaking finals against Nadal and Djokovic, in one of the most entertaining matches of this century. But not because of tennis quality.Follow Mert:Twitter @MertovsTDeskTennis With An Accent: https://tennisaccent.com/Follow Tennis and Bagels:Twitter @tennis_bagels (managed by Andre)Vansh on Twitter @vanshv2kInstagram @tennisandbagelsFacebook/tennisandbagelsThank you for listening to this podcast!--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tennis-and-bagels/message Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/tennis-and-bagels . Vansh and I are joined by our good friend Owen Lewis to discuss how do we think the incident involving Novak Djokovic, and a lineswoman affected the rest of the players in the US Open 2020. Is it easier now? Is it more pressure? How are players like Daniil Medvedev, Dominic Thiem, and Alexander Zverev feeling now that the one favourite player by the vast majority of fans, journalists and pretty much anybody, is out? It is a huge opportunity for these guys to try and grab their first Grand Slam for sure. In men's tennis, an ATP Masters 1000 is worth 1000 points in rankings. There are 9 of those as opposed to 4 Grand Slams. By all means, they have overall half the value of Grand Slams, at least. Considering they account for a total of 9000 points, whereas the Slams are at 8000, these tournaments hold a very important place in the calendar, as they can define who becomes number 1 at the end of the season. And our Big 4 cares about them: only 43 titles went to non Big 4 players since 2003. And Djokovic just tied Nadal's record of 35 total, and broke his own by completing the Double Career Golden Masters, a truly novel and unique feat that is unlikely to be reproduced in many years. Why then, so many disregard this category in relation to the Grand Slams? Why do we place so much more importance to the majors while almost not caring about any other thing when comparing records? Why do so few people outside the tennis fan base recognize those tournaments, but most likely know about Wimbledon or the US Open? Vansh and I are not exactly looking for an answer, but we try and discuss some of the reasons as to why the Masters 1000 category has not been able so far to live up to the 2nd most important in the tennis world. The draw at the 2020 US Open is pretty wide open in the women's side: 6 of the top 10 out, Serena Williams not playing her best, and Karolina Pliskova yet to impress at the Grand Slam level. But this is no problem at the women's field, to be fully honest. Women's tennis is springing with new talents, the depth of female tennis right now is encouraging and really exciting. If we cannot tell with much certainty who will be the winner, it is not because the top players aren't there, but because there are too many good contenders. This promises to be a fantastic fortnight. Many thanks to Alex Gruskin for such a fun discussion! The US Open will be the second Grand Slam of the year. And it comes after months of quarantine and a weekend after the Cincinnati Masters 1000. Several players are not in the draw, including 2 of the Big 3, Rafael Nadal, who chose to not come to North America, and Roger Federer, sidelined with a knee injury. But the field is still full of great talents, and promising new players. Plus, Novak Djokovic is playing. Who is the favourite? Throughout tennis history, exceptional players have blown our minds with extraordinary seasons. Unbelievable winning streaks and percentages, great head to head against their biggest rivals, swapping most of the Grand Slams plus several titles, and more accomplishments that made records still yet to be broken - and we're talking from seasons as early as 1969. With the immense knowledge from Steve Flink, tennis historian, journalist, and writer, and the investigative talents and in-depth analysis of Vansh Vermani, tennis enthusiast and writer for Cracked Rackets, we go through 4 of those stellar seasons: - Guillermo Vilas 1977 - John McEnroe 1984 - Andre Agassi 1999 - Roger Federer 2006 It was just a wonderful time listening to Steve talk and immerse us in the exact time and context of these mighty players, the greatest of all time. I hope you enjoy it, this episode was one of the most fun and humbling to record. Steffi Graf remains the only player ever, male or female, to have won the Golden Slam, which is winning all 4 Grand Slams and the Olympic Gold medal in the same season. In this episode, I am joined by Vansh Vermani, a tennis enthusiast and writer for Cracked Racquets (follow them @CrackedRacquets). That season was remarkable no matter how you look at it. She was distributing bagels like it's no one's business, only lost 2 sets in all 4 slams, and an overall 13 sets to 148 in the season overall, losing only 3 matches. Regarded by most as the greatest season of all time, Steffi Graf's incredible year of dominance deserves an episode done solely for herself. It is also worth remembering: only 3 other players have won all 4 slams plus the Olympic Gold in their careers, not in the same year: Andre Agassi in 1996, Nadal in his great 2008 season, and Serena Williams finally achieved the Career Golden Slam in 2012. Andy Murray carried the weight of a nation for most of his career. His accomplishments in an era of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer are absolutely mind blowing. Some say: there's the Big 3, then Murray, then everybody else. But he failed several times before getting there. Before he could win Wimbledon, he had to lose it. A very painful loss to Roger Federer in 2012, after being a set up then losing in 4 sets. And then, redemption: a rematch came quicker then anyone anticipated, on the grounds of SW19 again, where Murray had a chance to redeem himself in front of his home crowd and give them something to appease their longing. In straight sets, Murray would win the biggest title of his career so far. What awaited next is history. Could Andy Murray have won the US Open that year if he hadn't won the Olympics? Could he had won against Djokovic in the 2013 Wimbledon final without the US Open? Could he had finished the long wait for a male British Wimbledon champion since Fred Perry did it in 1938 without any of these 2 titles? The stars aligned for Andy Murray to make history. All he needed to do was stick to the plan. And stick to the plan he did. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tennis-and-bagels/message Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/tennis-and-bagels . Hosted on Acast. With the US Open coming soon, or at least with the promise of it, we have to wonder as tennis fans who are the favourites to win. Several issues make this call more complicated then ever, because of the pandemic: will the lack of fans in the stands affect the players? Will it be negatively or positively? How important really is that courts aren't empty? What about the draws: is the playing field compromised? Are exhibition tournaments and matches making tennis players more tired or more match fit? Even still, it is hard to call someone else other than Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Serena Williams to win. Especially Nadal at Roland Garros. Speaking of Serena, the GOAT title might also be on the line, with interesting conditions to get there by tying Margaret Court's Grand Slam tally in some very similar conditions to when the Australian used to play, and win tennis majors. It will be an interesting tennis season to come back to when it's all over. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tennis-and-bagels/message Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/tennis-and-bagels . Who is the Tennis GOAT? The Greatest Of All Times is a discussion that goes beyond tennis, spanning through all sports. Players of many generations who redefined the game. But is there a single tennis player who is truly worthy of being the GOAT? I welcome Owen Lewis, writer of the blog The Racket ( https://theracket.home.blog/ ), as we discuss tennis players in the Open Era, in particular the Big Three, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. What are their cases to claim the ultimate title? Dive in with us through several statistics such as head to head, court versatility, weeks at number one, and the most elusive record of all time: number of Grand Slams won, which Federer currently holds the record for at 20 total. At some point, maybe a women's GOAT? Hopefully! Feel free to leave a message through Anchor! 2020 has not been the greatest for tennis. Lots of drama, lots of controversies, not a lot of tennis. We, as fans, do enjoy some of that off-court action and want to know what's up with the stars. But 90% of the time, we actually want to watch tennis being played. Unbelievable shots, rallies, sets, matches tournaments, that's what we live for! So, thanks, Wimbledon, for putting up the classics for us. But, in the spirit that tennis will resume normally in 2021, I want to start thinking about the craziest predictions for the tournament at SW19 where most call the Temple of Tennis. Federer winning his 21st grand slam? Serena Williams tying Margaret Court's record of 24? Tsitsipas beating Djokovic in the semis? How about Coco Gauff making the final? It's so far away, I just couldn't help but go nuts with predictions. And I will make sure I'll remember them next year (when I will be right.) --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tennis-and-bagels/message Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/tennis-and-bagels . Here's the sheet: https://bit.ly/TheUltimatePerfectPlayer !!! Download it and come up with the ULTIMATE PERFECT player yourself and let me and your friends know about this so you can have tons of fun and intense discussions :D Federer's or Nadal's forehand? Djokovic, Murray, or Wawrinka for the backhand? And what about a lot of other shots, such as tactical slice, running forehand, flat and top spin shots? Surely the difference becomes minimal. But the tiniest differences can turn a match around. Who has the best shot in an obscure, incredibly specific category (that I made up, pretty much?) And to top it off, what even is "mental" game? Here I say it has to do with creativity, strategy, toughness, focus, consistency, accuracy, and desire to win. What the heck are those even? And do they even matter that much? So many questions!!! These past weeks saw another off court face-off in the tennis world. Dominic Thiem, world no.3, made some comments about lower ranked players and ended up questioning their professionalism, making it look like he believed everyone started on the same foot. He has made comments now explaining himself, but sadly the PR damage was done. Ines Ibbou, and Algerian female player ranked around the 600's made an open letter video explaining her situation and many more others' struggles, asking simply for some respect. I fully agree with that stance she takes in the letter, as I go on an explain how I had a dream of becoming a professional tennis player too, but sadly that is not what God had in store for me and many obstacles proved themselves insurmountable. However, I will continue to love the game forever, and this podcast is proof that I still want to be involved in it however I can! It all started with a tweet. Roger Federer was "wondering" whether the ATP and WTA, the two professional tennis associations for men and women, should merge into one body. This sounds like a great idea, fun and progressive. But wait; does it really? Should one stop to think about it a little bit, it turns out the whole history surrounding it, plus major issues regarding gender (i.e. women in sports) are not as easily brushed aside simply by a merger. Consequences could be greater than we think. So we must think about it. And decision makers should follow up after this big revelation. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tennis-and-bagels/message Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/tennis-and-bagels . This week from Monday until today, Thursday, a tennis tournament was held. But how? Everything is closed due to the Coronavirus outbreak!! The answer: VIDEO GAMES!!! The gaming world is very dear to me. I love gaming, and I love tennis games. This tournament is in a rough stage, but I believe there is a major opportunity there to reach a new market. In this episode I comment on what I think was good about the Mutua Madrid Virtual Pro, and what I thought was not so good. You can also watch the short review I made of the game,c called Tennis World Tour, on Facebook /tennisandbagels or on Insagram IGTV @tennisandbagels! In this episode I finally reach the dawn of the Open Era, the one we live in and watch today on our televisions and computers. I talk about the consequences the war had in the world of tennis, albeit briefly, and in SW19. Finally, I reach the period where tennis giants such as Margaret Court, Rod Laver, Ken Rosewall, and Roy Emerson make their appearances and start setting their all-time records. Hope you enjoy! This podcast is an informative episode about the history of the most famous tennis tournament in the world: Wimbledon, The Championships. Here, I describe and comment a little on the most influential people in the history of the Grand Slam, such as players and founders. Wimbledon is arguably the single most prestigious tennis tournament in the world, and it's history spans now across 3 different centuries, and there is where the very sport of tennis as we love today, was born. I had to leave out too many great information, but I tried to focus on a timeline of major events and players that made Wimbledon and tennis wha they are today. Grab some strawberries and cram, and hope you enjoy this episode! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tennis-and-bagels/message Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/tennis-and-bagels . This episode was a little rushed in, so sorry if the quality isn't as great! This match is considered by many as the best match of all time. It was certainly one of the greatest, no doubt about it, not just because of great tennis, but because of what it meant at the time: the establishment of Nadal as a force to be recognized in tennis not just on clay, and the end of Federer's complete dominance of the tour and a 5 year streak of winning Wimbledon. A match for the ages! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tennis-and-bagels/message Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/tennis-and-bagels . Hosted on Acast. In this episode, I talk about and rank my top 5 WTA players who are active still. There is still so much more about them, it was already difficult to keep this episode under an hour! Throughout, I also make comments on a few differences between the WTA and ATP tour, and leave my suggestion that there could be a tournament like the Elite Trophy and a revision of the rankings system in the ATP tour. This is my list of my *favourite* (not the players I think are the BEST) players on the ATP tour! I drop a big bomb at the end, I know the last guy I talk about is a big opinion divider. I am going to make more lists, now that the Coronavirus, or COVID-19 outbreak has caused the cancellation, of many tournaments, and will likely continue to cause more. I also mention 2 specific accounts on twitter for you to follow - related to tennis, obviously lol. Here they are: @kristieahn - hilarious comments and savage tik toks (which are also super relatable as a tennis player) @stanwawrinka - hilarious photos and challenges --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tennis-and-bagels/message Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/tennis-and-bagels . Horrible things are happening. The disease shouldn't be as deadly as it has been, and the best way to avoid more bad numbers and bad news is to make sacrifices. These included cancelling a large chunk of the tennis season. Trying to be a little positive, I focus my attention on what the news might mean for the tennis world, and how unbelievably bored a lot of us are right now that we are trying our best to stay at home. An epidemic of boredom is a small price to pay in order to keep the outbreak under control. In other news, how the heck does Roland Garros expect to happen in September? Nothing makes sense. Ah, the French. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tennis-and-bagels/message Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/tennis-and-bagels . Hosted on Acast. Because of the Corona Virus, or COVID-19, Indian Wells, which had issued new health guidelines to prevent the spread of the virus, now won't be held this year anymore. Miami says they'll go on, but at this point, uncertainty is the rule, not the exception. And this will likely affect other tournaments and sporting events - mainly the Tokyo Olympics. I think all eyes will be turning there really soon if the crisis doesn't get under heavy control and fast. Hopefully there will be some tennis, and Indian Wells will be the only casualty, but especially now we cannot know for sure. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tennis-and-bagels/message Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/tennis-and-bagels . Just to clarify: I think watching Challenger tournaments on a SCREEN is boring. Pretty much and live professional match is good, and I am all for better pay and opportunity for lower ranked players, especially because talent is not at all the defining variable in anyone's career's equation. I would love to go out and watch a challenger in Granby, or Quebec, for example! Also, Another thing that will get structure from now on is the naming scheme lol this has been all over the place. Anyway, Weekly recaps include for this week mostly the WTA. Kenin and Svitolina should be dangerous next week. Indian Wells draws not out, so I only talk about the fact that I want a Djokovic Nadal final. And, to cap this episode, still ranting about the WTA and ATP's digital presence. I am a consumer, and it is my right to be annoying (but I recognize the difficulty level of applying changes) Thanks for Listening ! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tennis-and-bagels/message Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/tennis-and-bagels . It's incredibly hard to cover 2 weeks in 30 minutes. There's obviously way too much info, but I tried to focus on what mattered, firstly in an overall tennis view, then on Canadians (which I really want to see doing well), and my own interests. So, Big 3 giving no signs of relenting, Roger Federer skipping clay court season and Indian Wells and Miami because of a knee surgery, shout outs to Canadians doing well (get better soon, Bianca!) and a personal shout out to Thiago Wild, a Brazilian who just won his first ATP title! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tennis-and-bagels/message Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/tennis-and-bagels . Quick episode as there's not much going on around the tennis world. Clijsters is back from retirement (again), Pospisil drinks more maple syrup, Auger-Aliassime makes the final of Rotterdam but loses to an in-form Monfils. And seriously, why the heck can't the ATP and WTA and any other tennis organization upload good quality video? Not in content, just image quality sucks so much. Just why. It's 2020, for crying out loud. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tennis-and-bagels/message Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/tennis-and-bagels . Hosted on Acast. I talk a little bit about the Australian Open Champions, new gen, Big Three, Serena Williams, and the year to come. Not too much because at this point you all already know everything that happened lol. And I'm switching times to MONDAYS so that I will be a bit fresher in terms of the events I am talking about! My thoughts on how the Australian Open app has been terrible until I decided to talk about it. And a lot of talking about the ATP next gen: are they going to be able to finally challenge the Big 3? Is a new generation of female players rising to dominate the game and become all-time greats? I don't have a clue, I can watch about 40% of all matches I want to watch. But I can hope, and the end of the first Grand Slam of the year may hold some answers once champions arise. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tennis-and-bagels/message Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/tennis-and-bagels . What I think about the ATP Cup and some thoughts on the Australian Open this year, and why I think this decade is shaping up to be very interesting in both Women's and Men's tennis because of the new players coming in. Still would love for Djokovic to keep his title though :) --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tennis-and-bagels/message Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/tennis-and-bagels .
